Retro gaming: WHDLoad 18.6
Using WHDLoad, you can install games, scene demos and intros from cracking groups to your harddisk that were only working from floppy disks previously. Version 18.6 provides the following changes:
- WHDLoad now disables interrupts of graphics cards under
the Picasso96 software. This should solve problems with
Spectrum cards and newer P96 releases (issue #2598). Thanks
to Thomas Richter for providing useful information.
- Manual translations are in sync again for catalan and czech.
- Kickemu kick31.s can be instructed to load/init the custom
nonvolatile.s via option INIT_NONVOLATILE.
- nonvolatile.s now correctly works on searching nonexistent
items in a existing nvram file
- In kickemu kick13.s a waitblit has been added to avoid
problems with the gfx.Text patch (Psygore).
- The provided source keyboard.s now uses cia timers instead the
raster beam for the keyboard acknowledge delay.
- Access faults of size word to address -1 and of size long to
addresses -3..-1 are now reliable detected and reported.
In earlier releases: on 68030: when ExpMem was used these were
undetected, on 68040: when ExpMem was used and vector base was
not write protected (e.g. Freezer detected, Snoop*,
resload_Protect used) these were undetected, if vector base
was protected a fault inside WHDLoad was reported, on 68060:
these were always correctly reported
- To reduce the likelihood that resload functions get
interrupted by other calls to resload functions, some resload
functions which usually take not much execution time, have
been changed to be not interruptible anymore.
The following resload functions have been changed that way:
Abort, SetCACR, FlushCache, Control, Protect#?, SetCPU,
GetCustom, VSNPrintF and Log.
In general the option NoResInt/S can be used to avoid problems
with interrupted resload calls at the cost of possible sound/
graphics distortions when interrupts are disabled for a longer
time.
- The provided source sources/whdload/savegame.s is now fully
pc-relative. It contains also additional fixes for interrupt
acknowledge and AGA compatibility (JOTD/ross).
- The inplace decruncher for the old RNC1 format has been
improved to support files which need a larger distance
(Heimdall/JOTD).
- The kick31.s now prefers a A600 kickstart image if NO68020 is
set. It fails now if there is only a 68000/010 and a
A1200/A4000 kickstart image was loaded (JOTD).
- When using kickfs.s the dos.library function
Open(MODE_READWRITE) now performs correctly on Kickstart 3.1
by creating a non-existent file. On Kickstart 1.3 the old
behavior remains to not create a file.
- If a call to resload_Examine is attempted without the flag
WHDLF_Examine has been set in the Slave structure WHDLoad now
terminates with an appropriate error message (JOTD).
- The kickemu kick12.s, kick13.s and kick31.s has been modified
to automatically set the Slave flag WHDLF_Examine if HDINIT is
set (JOTD).
- When using resload_Relocate with tags CHIPPTR/FASTPTR and the
specified chip/fast memory location would result in an
overlapping with base executable WHDLoad now gives a useful
error message (JOTD).
- Instead of waiting for a long video frame WHDLoad now forces a
long frame before starting the Slave. This fixes startup
problems on Kickstart 3.0 and an interlace video mode
(issue #4798).
- MMU-table creation has been reworked. It is now faster and
uses less memory.
- Support for ACA-freezer added.
- if "*" is specified for the Slave to load WHDLoad searchs the
current directory for a file with the pattern "#?.slave" and
will use the first file matching (Toni Wilen)

- Report of Thomas Richter: Individual Computers has released version 3.0 of the RTG driver P96, free for those ones who purchased the software during the last 12 months. It now "supports screen dragging for all graphic cards included in the package, except for the CVisionPPC whose hardware lacks a particular feature to make it work. The next important feature is that there is a new driver pair, namely for the CVisionPPC and BVisionPPC boards. They support all bitmap types (unlike under CGfx) except planar, namely chunky 8 bit, 16 bit RGB, 16 Bit RGB PC, 16 bit BGR PC, 24 bit RGB, 24 bit BGR, 32 bit RGBA, 32 bit BGRA, 32 bit ARGB and 32 bit ABGR."
- Report of TribbleSmasher: The accelerator board ACA 1260 developed by Individual Computers "is still delayed as features are added and it seems the focus will be on the 040 version because of the shortage or insane prices for 060 cpus.
IComp also produced new dsub23 connectors and will create a bugfixed Buster12 chip with Dave Haynie! - ACube will produce the Tabor A1222 prototypes and Tabor is no longer called by its code name anymore.
Also the sound driver is ready..." Only "a few bugs to iron out" (AmigaKit). - TribbleSmasher continues writing: "AmigaOS4 updates and bugfixes are plentiful but there is some controversy how to distribute them: new disc or other methods, and date is ambigious too."
- Report of Amifrog (not public): The kernel ExecSG now boots faster and includes new mechanism for later support of multiple cores; a new version of the Enhancer Software is planned for X-MAS; a PPC-native version of ImageFX Studio was announced.

Print magazine: Amiga Addict announced
"Amiga Addict" aims at reestablishing a british Amiga print magazine after 14 years. Required are 500 buyers, though. Currently, 84 copies of issue #1 have been preordered. Included will be all Amiga flavours from 68k via PPC and AROS to Vampire.
December's issue will be available - according to its webshop - for 4.50 UKP and consist of 54 full-colour A4 pages. A digital version will be available as well and be free of charge for subscribers of the printed magazine. Among the content announced are interviews with Dave Haynie and Cloanto, articles about Kim Justice and AmigaBill, a tutorial about using Compact Flash on Amiga, a report about a Raspberry Pi used as Amiga 600 and an article about PageStream. AmigaOS 4: A-EON released "Enhancer Software Core 1.1" for free
"Enhancer Core" is a free collection of classes and libraries taken from the Enhancer Software package which was announced a year ago. It is supposed "to encourage further development in the community."

Commodore's Amiga software for DSP support
On Commodore's unfinished A3000 successor AA3000 / A3000+ a digital signal processor (DSP) would have performed which according to the system specifications would have been used for a fast serial data communication or decoding audio streams.
The developer Eric Lavitsky responsible for the the software support of the DSP at Commodore now has made available the software to an Amiga fan for test purposes on his AA3000 replica developed by the Finnish developer 'hese'. The software may not be freely distributed but some screenshots has been taken and the extent of the software and codecs has been descibed.

MorphOS: Web-Browser Wayfarer 1.4 (Update)
Today version 1.2 of Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek's web browser Wayfarer has been released. Additional to some bug fixes, favicons, quick links and the support for WebP images has been implemented.
MorphOS 3.14 and 1 GB RAM are required. A processor with at least 1,5 GHz is recommended. For giving feedback please use the corresponding discussion on morphzone.

AskYourAmiga - a Wolfram Alpha question machine for Amiga systems
According to the author, AskYourAmiga, in short AYA, is "a very early version of a GUI for Wolfram Alpha question machine" (Wikipedia entry). It does not find any links but right away the answer which can be also represented in e.g. graphs.
The answers are grouped into different categories and can be displayed and saved als text or image. AskYourAmiga has a MUI GUI and is available for AmigaOS 3.x (starting with a 68020 processor), AmigaOS 4, AROS (x86, x64, ARM) and MorphOS 3.x.

WHDLoad: New installers until 17.10.2020
Using WHDLoad, games, scene demos and intros by cracking groups, which were originally designed to run only from floppy disks, can be installed on harddisk. The following installers have been added until 17.10.2020:
- 2020-10-12 updated: Apple Hunt (Ecthelion) corrected install icon (Info)
- 2020-10-12 updated: Mission Elevator (Micropartner) fixed for 68000, updated install script (Info)

MorphOS: e-mail client Iris 0.94
Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek's "Iris" is going to be the standard e-mail client of MorphOS. It supports IMAP and is able to display as well as create HTML e-mails.
Beta version 94 adds minor crash fixes in autoconfiguration and updated libs. The plan now is to migrate to the Wayfarer core as soon as Wayfarer has the same feature coverage (read: printing). For feedback to the developer the corresponding thread at MorphZone can be used. (snx)

Promotion video: AGA platform game 'Wiz - Quest for the Magic Lantern'
At the beginning of the year, the former developer and publisher Adrian Cummings ("Mutation Software") returned and additional to some of his old games he also announced a new platform game called "Wiz".
Meanwhile a promotion video of the game has been published which also shows some scenes from the game. According to the developer the game is supposed to be released on 5th December. The game can be purchased on disk or USB stick for 16 UKP (about 17,60 Euro) as well as download version for 10 UKP (11 Euro).

Recetly three games of the Belgian Peter Verswyvelen has been added - Ziriax, Deliverance and Zarathrusta -, the Airbus-A320 simulations of Rainer Bopf and many games of the Italian publisher Simulmondo including all sports games for the Amiga.

Retro Games Ltd. implies production of an "Amiga (Mini?)" for 2021
In 2018 Retro Games Ltd. introduced the TheC64 Mini and TheC64 Maxi (German) as two ARM-based Linux computers. A THEVIC20 also is in work - there were also rumors that the British company is working on an Amiga replica.
On the Facebook site for 2021 a
new product has been announced: The computer only is shown as black outline but reminds of an Amiga 500. Further information are not available.

Tetris clone: Teserae
Originally the Tetris clone Teserae was written for the Atari ST which at the beginning of the 90s was ported to the Amiga 500 in order to learn it. Now the game is available under the title link. According to the website the game runs fine on an Amiga 600 as well as on an Amiga 1200.

ATnoX: ATX power supplies for Amiga (update)
The Amiga 1000 (and, depending on additional hardware usage, also the Amiga 2000 and 3000) require a so-called tick signal not provided by ATX power supplies. It is a 50 or 60-Hz reference signal for the video chipset. ATnoX is an open source board for using ATX power supplies on the Amiga which adds this signal.

Additional information regarding the Amiga 2000 and 3000. Both mainboards can be configured to generate the tick signal from the clock rate instead (like those Amiga models with integrated keyboard do). This jumper setting reduces accuracy, though. Thus for certain applications, e.g. genlock usage, also these big box Amigas do require a power supply providing the tick signal. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Amiga emulator for Mac OS: vAmiga 0.9.13.2
Dirk Hoffmann's "vAmiga" is a new Amiga emulator for MacOS computers emulating an A500, A1000 or A2000. Changes since our last news item:
- Fixed a bug that caused the DMAEN bit in DSKLEN not to be cleared under certain circumstances (Ruff 'n' tumble, Knightmare)
- The screen recorder no longer crashes if an invalid aspect ratio is specified
- The screen recorder accepts custom video bit rates now
- Fixed a severe sprite sequencer bug that was introduced in v0.9.10.1
- Fixed a bug that made snapshots unusable in v0.11 and v0.12
- Fixed a bug in the sprite collision logic (Gravity Force)
- Video capturing support has beed added (requires FFmpeg to be installed)

Jean-François Fabre's source codes of WHDLoad slaves on Github
Jean-François 'jotd' Fabre has released all assembler source codes of WHDLoad installers which he wrote or maintained on Github. These are little programs which for example remove copy protection and hardware or Kickstart dependences from a commercial game delivered on disk and convert it in a WHDLoad "slave". This is a program which can be executed by WHDLoad.

Puzzle game: Vegetables Deluxe V2

MorphOS: First public release of new web browser Wayfarer
Press release: Wayfarer, a new web browser based on a modern mid-2020 branch of WebKit is now available for download from wayfarer.icu. This new app makes it possible to browse most of the web that have become off-limits for Odyssey with its ageing engine. Google apps like Docs, Drive and Maps with Street view are supported just as the Whatsapp or Telegram web interfaces.
Wayfarer will work on any machine running the brand new MorphOS 3.14 with at least 1GB of RAM. A 1.5GHz or faster CPU is recommended.
This port has been made possible by the concerted effort of the MorphOS developers, the MorphOS beta testers, translators and all of the users who donated to the project. (snx)

Operating system: MorphOS 3.14
Press release: The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the immediate availability of MorphOS 3.14. While mostly a maintenance and stability release, this update also brings multiple technological improvements in the kernel. Out of these, the most notable are TLS support in exec.library, updates to the Netstack and ixemul.library.
We would also like to thank all of our translators and beta testers for stepping up their efforts in the weeks leading up to this release. This update ships with over 230 new and more than a 100 improved translation files.
We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation and troubleshooting guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.14 is available for download in our files section. (snx)

Commercial text adventure: Playable demo for 'Tristam Island'
Tristam Island is a commercial text adventure which was developed for Infocom's virtual environment Z-Machine and therefore can be played on many different platforms. A demo version for the Amiga is available on Aminet. It offers about 90 minutes of fun - according to the author this a quarter of the full game.
From November 20 on, 'Tristam Islan' can be purchased for 4 USD on itch.io. The download archive then will include disk images for several retro platforms like the Amiga or different 8-Bit computers, DOS or the Gameboy.

Puzzle games: AstroBlox Revisited, Hansel and Gretel
At the Polish retro event Decrunch 2020 two new puzzle games for the Amiga have been released. 'AstroBlox Revisited' (video, download site) is a Sokoban version respectively a deluxe version of an older Aminet release. Hansel and Gretel (video, download site) is a mixture of platform and "moving blocks" game and was developed with AMOS.

- Fixed a bug in the implementation of the RESET instruction (Amiga Transformer)
- Fixed a bug that caused Paula to omit DSKBLK IRQs when no drive was selected (A-Max)
- The ERSY bit in BPLCON0 now freezes the position counters (The Jetsons)
- The BZERO bit in DMACON had wrong polarity when the Line Blitter was in use
- Fixed the serial loopback cable (which was broken since v0.60)
- The memory inspector has been updated. It can now display the bank map as it is seen by Agnus
- Recalibrated the drive motor to rotate the disk at exactly 300rpm

Single-Screen platform game: Magica
"Magica" (video) is a single-screen platform game inspired by classics like 'Snow Bros' or 'Bubble Bobble' which was originally released by Juan J. Martinez for the Amstrad-CPC computers. The Amiga port is provided by Andy Noble.
Magica runs on any Amiga 500, the game can also be started from the harddrive after copying the executable file to it.

Amigakit: Status update on Tabor/A1222
In a post on amiga.org, Matthew Leaman (Amigakit) has given a short status update on the A1222 motherboards which could be preordered in the "Early Adopter" program:
"A-EON is currently stalled on the prototype stage of the new v1.3 design of the A1222 Plus. This hopefully will be resolved soon as there is some additional help enlisted to get this over the line. Just working through the mundane NDA/legal stuff.
Regarding the AAA Bundle: for some time you can download the software, in the next week you will also be able to download the Viva Amiga movie from the Amisphere server. The digital download of this movie is part of the AAA Bundle."

Hollywood plugin: RebelSDL 1.1
Press release: Airsoft Softwair, the hardest working men in code business, are proud to present RebelSDL 1.1. RebelSDL is a plugin for Hollywood that allows you to use SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) from Hollywood. This makes it possible to write scripts that utilize the host system's graphics hardware to create high-performance, butter-smooth 2D animation that is produced completely in hardware by the GPU of your graphics board.
RebelSDL 1.1 is a major update which contains several important improvements over the last release. First and foremost, RebelSDL is now available for AmigaOS 4 for the very first time. This allows you to write Hollywood scripts which take advantage of the latest Warp3D Nova and OpenGL ES technologies leading to dramatic performance boosts when drawing and scaling graphics. For MorphOS, RebelSDL is now also available in a special PowerSDL version. Since SDL2 on MorphOS doesn't currently support hardware acceleration, PowerSDL is a much better choice to make use of the graphics hardware for a better drawing performance. Finally, RebelSDL for Linux ARM comes in three different flavours now: Raspberry Pi (taking advantage of the Pi's custom hardware), OpenGL and OpenGL ES. This will allow you to get the most out of the ARM Linux of your choice. On top of that, there are also some other general new features for all platforms.
RebelSDL 1.1 is now available for free download for a multitude of platforms from the official Hollywood portal. The distribution archive also contains 20 example scripts and extensive documentation in various formats (PDF, HTML, CHM, AmigaGuide).

Open Hardware: Amiga-1200 expansion modules updated
A month ago Matthias Münch's expansion modul versions for the Amiga 1200 was updated.
Depending on the modul, the expansions offers a VGA or HDMI port for the Indivision AGA Mk1, Mk2cr and MK3 which can be can be used simultaneously with an USB and/or soundcard (e.g. Subway or RapidRoad respectively Delfina or Prisma).

Amiga Bootblock Reader 4 (Windows)
Jason Smith's "Amiga Bootblock Reader" is a "Windows program which allows reading and writing Amiga bootblocks from Amiga Disk Files."
Changes in Amiga Bootblock Reader 4:
- Now recognises 2166 different bootblocks
- Brainfile / Category list now in XML Format to allow easy editing / import
- Supports ADFs, DMS, ADZ (Gzipped ADF) and Zipped ADF files (DMS scanning requires XDMS)
- Will now filter directory scan to only scan disk and bootblock files unless specified
- Now supports sub directory scanning

Music player: MiniSid 0.02 (all Amiga systems)
'MiniSid' is a player for C64 music files created with Hollywood which can also play other formats like MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, WAV, AIFF, MOD, XM and S3M. Versions are available for AmigaOS 3/4 and MorphOS as well as for Windows. The OS3 version also works under AROS 68k, a version for AROS x86 has been announced.

CDTV extension: Improved video signal using 'Ultimate CDTV video board'
On Arananet the "Ultimate CDTV video board" is available which replaces the original CDTV video board of a CDTV "adding a great output quality" and completely removing "the verticals bars made on some monitors". The card offers a 15-khz-VGA-port and the typical 23-pole video port. Additionally it provides a SD card reader which can only be used with a Vampire 500.
Furthermore the extension provides an experimental RS-232-WLAN adapter based on a ESP8266 microcontroller which has to be connected to the serial port of the CDTV. This adapter emulates a modem enabling terminal or mailbox software establishing a WLAN connection.

Audio recording: Speech of Jay Miner
Bill Winters from the Youtube channel "Guru Meditation" has found an old audio recording in the garage of his father which includes a speech of Jay Miner at the "AmiExpo East Coast 1990" in Washington D.C. (USA). The "father of the Amiga" talked in detail among others about the history of the computers, his relation to Commodore and his ideas of the further development of the platform. At the end there was also a round of questions in which Miner seemed accidently to confirm the development of a successor of the A3000.

FPGA clone: Minimig RTG for MiST and TurboChameleon 64
After his port of Minimig AGA to the TurboChameleon 64, Alastair Robinson now has also implemented an extension of the graphic card emulation ("RTG") for the hardware of Individual Computers. In appreciation for the free availability of the Minimig-AGA core for MiST, which is based on his RTG version, he also has provided a port for the MiST hardware.

Prototype of an unreleased jump'n run: Green Thang
"Green Thang" (video) is a jump'n run game which has been started being developed for the Amiga in 1994. Due to a crashing market, later only a version for the Atari Jaguar was developed further but which only some time later was also dropped. The website "Games that Weren't" succeeded in finding a playable prototype of the Amiga version.

Full version for download: Directory Opus Magellan 2
The website of the Amiga Future offers the full version of the file manager "Directory Opus Magellan 2" for free download. The download - an ISO image of the CD - can be only be accessed by registered users due to the size of the file.

Game developer Chris Földing (Jonathan, Stadt der Löwen) died
Chris G. Földing (audio interview from 2019 (German)) was graphic artist and media designer who in cooperation with Markus Frisch in the 90s released several graphic adventures for Amiga and PC: Holiday Maker, Die Stadt der Löwen and Jonathan.
Markus 'Neo Hippie' Steffan who in the past years travelled to Memmingen to visiting the scenes of the game and storing the experiences in his travel diaries maintained regular contact with Földing. He told us that the game developer died last Wednesday at the age of 72.

Playable Demo: Dungeon Crawler "The Shadows of Sergoth"
"The Shadows of Sergoth" is a Dungeon Crawler similar to Dungeon Master which was released in 2018 for the Amstrad CPC 6128. Some months ago an Amiga port has been announced and now a first playable demo version released (video). The game requires 1,5 MB Chip-RAM and at least a 68020 processor is recommended.
If you are going to play Shadows of Sergoth on an Amiga with 68000 or 68020 processor, you can turn off animations in the option menu. For the end of 2020/beginning of 2021 a commercial release of the game is planned in digital as well as boxed version.
