Hollywood-Plugin: GL Galore 1.0 for hardware-accelerated 2D-/3D-graphics
Press release: This is the game changer you've been waiting for! Airsoft Softwair is proud to present the next big thing: GL Galore, the ultimate OpenGL® scripting solution for Hollywood! GL Galore is a plugin for Hollywood that allows you to access the OpenGL 1.1 command set directly from Hollywood. This makes it possible to write scripts that utilize the host system's 3D hardware to create high-performance, butter-smooth 2D and 3D animation that is computed completely in hardware by the GPU of your graphics board. This leads to a huge performance boost over the classic Hollywood graphics API which is mostly implemented in software. Especially systems with slower CPUs will benefit greatly from hardware-accelerated drawing offered by OpenGL.

OpenGL is a portable software interface to graphics hardware. It is available for almost every platform in a variety of flavours. On AmigaOS and compatibles, OpenGL is available as MiniGL on AmigaOS 4, TinyGL on MorphOS, StormMesa on AmigaOS 3, and Mesa 3D on AROS. Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems are usually shipped with an OpenGL driver already installed.

GL Galore offers wrapper functions for most commands of the OpenGL 1.1 API including many GLU functions. Additionally, GL Galore also offers bridging functions that allow you to convert Hollywood brushes into OpenGL textures and vice versa. Furthermore, when GL Galore is activated, Hollywood's hardware brushes and hardware double-buffers are mapped directly to OpenGL so that you can even benefit from hardware accelerated drawing and transformation without writing a single line of GL code. Whenever GL Galore is activated, all graphics output will automatically be routed through OpenGL.

GL Galore can also be useful for rapidly prototyping software in OpenGL. People who used to program OpenGL using C will greatly appreciate Hollywood's convenient multimedia API which offers functions for almost all common tasks. For example, by using GL Galore to write OpenGL programs you can avoid all the hassle of managing a GL window using one of the many different toolkits out there. Also, jobs like image loading, sound or video playback, font handling and image manipulation will become ridiculously easy thanks to Hollywood's powerful command set which covers almost 700 functions. And of course, there aren't 14 different versions of commands like glColor, but just one version because sometimes less is more.

GL Galore is the first plugin to bear the Powered by Hollywood 6.0 seal of quality as it utilizes the new display adapter plugin interface introduced with Hollywood 6.0. The plugin will not work with older versions of Hollywood. It is available free of charge and can be downloaded from the official Hollywood portal at http://www.hollywood-mal.com/ Versions for AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS (i386), Windows, Mac OS X (PowerPC and i386) and Linux (PowerPC and i386) are provided. On top of that, GL Galore comes with over 250 pages of documentation in various formats like PDF, HTML, AmigaGuide, and CHM. Finally, many impressive example scripts are included in the distribution archive to get you started really quickly.

All of this makes GL Galore the ultimate OpenGL scripting experience combining the best of both worlds into one powerful plugin: Hollywood's extensive and convenient multimedia function set and OpenGL's raw graphics power!

AROS-Distribution: Aeros for Raspberry Pi 2 Premium with ExaGear
Pascal Papara's Linux-hosted AROS-distribution Aeros now exclusively is available for the Raspberry Pi 2 as premium version (screenshot), which includes the lx-command for launching Linux-programms out of AROS as well as the commercial programm ExaGear.

Using this emulator it is possible to execute x86-applications on the ARM-processor of the Raspberry. Therefore programms like Skype (Linux/x86) and Wine (Linux/x86) as well as, based on them, Amiga emulators WinUAE (Windows/x86) and WinFellow (Windows/x86) can be used with this distribution (Video: WinFellow).

Some of the x86-programms only runs with limitations: For instance Skype has not a sound output because the required soundserver PulseAudio was left out due to problems with other apllications. Without ExaGear and the programms which use it, the distribution can be also used on a Raspberry Pi 1. (snx) (Translation: dr)

According to rumours in several forums, Petro Tyschtschenko offers the last Walker prototype - the other model he sold to Nicholas Blachford long ago - for sale via Facebook. The entry on Facebook is not generally accessible. Therefore currently there are only some screenshots:

If these screenshots prove themselves true, then Tyschtschenko obviously hopes to get 25.000 Euro by selling this rare prototype - which recently could be booted at a retro meeting for the first time (the IDE-cable was connected incorrectly). (cg) (Translation: dr)

Platformer: "The Game"
David Eriksson's "The Game" is an unfinished platformer written in AMOS. The game is fully playable, according to the author it only lacks "a title and a little bit of polish". The author explains that "there is no real ending, you just get to a room that says Well Done and there's no real end".

Eriksson also states that "The main reason I stopped development was that when I tried the game on a clean A1200 there was some minor sprite flicker that I couldn't get rid of (and its still there) but now I decided to clean up some other parts of the game up a bit and release what I have."

"The Game" was heavily inspired by the retro platformer You have to win the game, even if work on the former started way before the latter was released.

"The Game" runs on 68000-based Amigas but according to the author "it still is a little slow". An Amiga 1200 with some FastRAM is recommended. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Sam460 customers can return AmigaOS 4.1 and get a refund
Three weeks ago, MorphOS 3.8 has been released, including support for the Sam460 motherboards from ACube. Now the Italian hardware vendor reacts to this development and offers his customers a refund if they want to return their copy of AmigaOS 4.1: If you return your AmigaOS DVD to ACube, ACube will pay you 48 Euros.

The exact conditions for the refund are listed in a PDF file that is linked to from ACube's webshop:
  • The refund is only available for "AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition OEM" and needs to be requested no more than 30 days after purchase of the hardware
  • the DVD package is unopened and still shrinkwraped
  • The customer returns the DVD to ACube at his own costs and also pays any additional paypal or bank fees required for returning the money to him
  • To avoid the additional costs and the hassle of sending the DVD back to ACube, customers can request a refund immediately after ordering the hardware, bevore it's even processed at ACube
All Sam460 variants are still available only as a bundle with AmigaOS 4.1 though. The fact that ACube keeps referring to a "refund" even if it's clear new customers can pretty much buy a motherboard and request the 'refund' at the same time and that the company explains in detail why they're offering a refund - including a link to the EU guidelines on "Unfair Commercial Practices" suggests that ACube's contractually obligated to always sell a copy of AmigaOS 4.1 with their Hardware.

It's currently unknown if the refund will also be available when purchasing a Sam460 through another dealer. (cg)

Interview with Trevor Dickinson
Under the title link, Michal Bergseth has interviewed Trevor Dickinson (A-EON Technology). He talked about the 30-birthday-events in Amsterdam, Neuss, Mountain View and Peterborough (which he will all attend) and that he supported financially later versions of Amiga Forever.

He has announced "MultiViewer" for AmigaOS and AmigaOS 4, a new software which will replace MultiView and show all kind of files which are supported by datatypes.

For the AmigaOne X5000 which is about to start production, A-EON Technology offers the prospect of a cheaper price compared to its predecessor.

Using the Cow3D demo, the latest benchmarks under Warp3D and a Southern-Island graphic board (XFX RadeonHD 7770) had demonstrated that the AmigaOne X5000 would be almost twice as fast as any other AmigaOS-4-PowerPC hardware, althouth a non-optimized OS4-version with Debug output was used. Dickinson did not mention, if this could be caused by the X-kernel. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Final Writer: Development started under new owner
Some time ago Timothy "Terminills" Deters has announced that he had acquired the rights to text processing software "Final Writer". Meanwhile a programmer seems to start developing further the programm, as the screenshot released by Deters shows:

Final Writer Screenshot

According to the file name, currenty the programm still runs under the 68k-port of AROS. Ports to AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS have been already announced. According to Deters in discussion, all interested users should expect "more of an evolution than a revolution" concerning the further development of Final Writer. Before a new release, the following improvements are absolutely necessary:
  1. Turboprint support for prints in 24 Bit
  2. RTG-support, currently Final Writer has problems with screens with more than 256 colours
  3. Bug fixes
  4. Working support for the locale.library
Additionally Deters is looking for support concerning the OpenDocument-format, although it is not clear if already in the first version this feature will be implemented. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Meeting: Pictures und a short report from Commodore-Meeting in Vienna
Stefan Egger writes: I posted a few photos from the Commodore Meeting in Vienna on Flickr. Here's a small report from the meeting:

In addition to lots of C64 computers and similar hardware (roboter arms, C116, Commodore Pong games, a Japanese VIC 1001), lots of Amiga systems were presented at the meeting: Stefan Egger ("computer collection vienna") was showing the very first and very last Amiga models: the A1000 prototype 'Velvet' and one of the few Amiga 4000T systems manufactured by Commodore.

AMike had brought his Amiga 1000 which was featuring a new motherboard ('GBA060'), Turrican had a snow white Amiga 1200 with black keys running various scene demos.

Thomas Dorn, former Commodore Austria employee, was demonstrating something very special: his Amiga 4000 was running a train control system developed by Siemens.

Reinhold Schertler was showing his Amiga 2000 equipped with a 68030 CPU, which was playing videos with a resolution of up to 320x216 pixels at 15 FPS featuring 22 kHz stereo sounnd. (snx) (Translation: cg)

Poll: how many news items should be displayed on the amiga-news.de front page?
The Amiga scene went through a lot of change in the last decade: it used to be an alternative desktop computer system with active users, now it's a hobby for retro enthusiasts and collectors. This had effects on both the amount of news items published by amiga-news.de - it shrank from 10 to 15 items per day to just 3 or 4 per day - and the behaviour of our readers: many of them only check in every few days now.

While every reader could theoretically configure the front page to suit his needs, experience shows that most people simply use the default settings without ever changing them. That's why we would like to ask our users what their preferred configuration for the front page would be. (cg) (Translation: cg)

MorphOS: SDL 2.0
SDL ('Simple DirectMedia Layer') provides a platform independent API for game developers. The MorphOS port of the 1.x series of SDL has been maintained by Ilkka 'itix' Lehtoranta as powersdl.library so far.

The new 2.x generation of SDL (list of improvements) will be distributed for MorphOS as sdl2.library. The current release is based on SDL 2.0.3. It is currently lacking 3D support and some less important interfaces are not implemented yet. Additionally, only sdl2_image.library has been ported so far, sdl2_mixer.library is currently being worked on (sub libraries from powersdl.library are not compatible with sdl2.library).

SDL 2.0 requires MorphOS 3.8, so far no game ports using the new library have been released.

Datatype: WarpJPEG 45.12 and WarpDTPrefs 45.7
Oliver Roberts has updated his Warp-datatype for JPEG-graphics as well as the corresponding preferences programm WarpDTPrefs. Under AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS it now offers Altivec support which makes the JPEG-decoding at least one and a half times faster compared with version 45.11.

If under MorphOS there is also a higher decoding speed compared with the original datatype of the operating system is not known yet. The original datatype also supports Altivec.

Changes:
  • Added AltiVec speed optimizations for the OS4 and MorphOS versions making decoding speed of baseline images 1.5x faster on a G4 and 1.9x faster on a PA6T, with fancy upsampling off, on average. With fancy upsampling on, the AltiVec speed gain is even greater - 1.9x faster on a G4 and 2.3x faster on a PA6T. These optimizations can be toggled off/on using the new USE_ALTIVEC setting
  • Huffman decoder in PowerPC versions is now 5-10% faster
  • Reintegrated higher quality fancy upsampling smoothing feature from IJG jpeglib v6b which had not been present since WarpJPEG 45.5 due to its removal from IJG jpeglib v7 and higher
  • MorphOS and WarpOS versions recompiled with VBCC 0.9d
  • Added new set of benchmarks for OS4 (benchmark updates for other platforms suspended until my A1200 motherboard has been repaired)

Press release: The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 3.8, which introduces support for ACube´s Sam460 series of mainboards and numerous Radeon graphics cards from AMD´s X1000 and HD series. AmigaOS 4.1: AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition ISO images for download
Press release: Brussels, May 14, 2015

We at Hyperion Entertainment CVBA are more than thrilled about the overwhelming success our customers made out of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition! Thank you!

Actually the success is so great, causing especially the supply of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition for Classic to dry up during the last weeks and some of your preferred dealers even ran out of stock already, which is of course unacceptable!

In order to remedy this drawback, Hyperion Entertainment CVBA commissioned the production of another batch of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition for Classic, which will be available to and from dealers before the end of May - yes, 2015 ;) So if you did not get a copy yet or want another one for your shelf, place your preorder at your favorite dealer now!

Good news for interested A3000 owners: of course we took advantage of this opportunity and fixed the Kicklayout to allow proper booting on A3000 machines without the need for a special bootdisk.

And also some good news for all existing AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition owners: with immediate effect the CD images of your registered AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition version(s) are available in the restricted download area. If not done already, please log in yourself and register your copies by entering the serial numbers in the registration form. We hope we eliminated in this way the fear of a broken CD some of you expressed.

In closing, thank you all again for making the huge success of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition possible in the first place! This is the best support you can give us for developing AmigaOS, so let's continue to stick together :-) (cg) (Translation: dr)

AROS: FUSE file system bounty project in progress again
Already in December, instead of Leif Salomonsson, Fredrik 'salass00' Wikstrom started working on implementing the FUSE-framework to AROS. It is a complete adaption of the filesysbox.library and not only a recompilation of the version of AmigaOS-4.

According to a statement, the time schedule (May 31st) cannot be achieved. Currently so far 202 US-Dollar has been donated. Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has offered to double each donation until 500 Dollar has been achieved. (snx) (Translation: dr)

The disadvantage: So far sound or network are not supported.

The distribution is based on Magellan featuring some major improvements, supports Mesa/Gallium and includes the game engine Antiryad (a debug-requester will appear but it does work), Free Pascal, many emulators, some games and many applications like AmiFIG or Lunapaint. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Hollywood Player 6.0 released
Press release: Airsoft Softwair is proud to announce that the Hollywood Player is now also available in version 6.0 for all platforms supported by Hollywood (AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, WarpOS, AROS, Windows, Mac OS PPC & x86, Linux PPC & x86 & ARM, Android).

With the Hollywood Player software authors can choose to distribute their programs as Hollywood applets instead of stand-alone executables. In contrast to stand-alone executables, Hollywood applets are universally executable which has the advantage that you don't have to compile your programs for as much as almost a dozen of different platforms but just one Hollywood applet is already sufficient. The end-user then simply has to install the Hollywood Player compatible with his platform and can run the Hollywood applet with it. Another advantage is that applets are much smaller than stand-alone executables compiled by Hollywood. While stand-alone executables often take up as much as 2 MB for only very few lines of code, Hollywood applets are very compact and often consist of only a few kilobytes. A last advantage is that programs distributed as Hollywood applets will automatically profit from improvements and bug fixes in newer versions of the Hollywood Player while programs distributed as stand-alone executables would have to be completely recompiled with each new Hollywood update in order to profit from improvements and bug fixes.

As its very name implies, the Hollywood Player can only be used to run applets compiled by Hollywood. It obviously cannot be used to create your own programs. You will still need the full version of Hollywood to create your own programs, of course.

On all Amiga compatibles, Hollywood Player installs itself to SYS:Utilities to be globally available as a default tool for Hollywood applets. Software authors choosing to distribute their programs as Hollywood applets can then simply set the default tool for their applets to "HollywoodPlayer" and inform the user to install the Hollywood Player before attempting to run the program.

The Hollywood Player is now available for free download from the official Hollywood portal for a wide range of architectures and comes with three demo applets to show its capabilities. (snx) (Translation: dr)
