Status update of the AmiZilla project

Event: Classic Computing 2006 nearly booked up
The Classic Computing 2006 is taking place on 30 September and 1 October 2006 in Nordhorn. The number of registrations and the response of the press is, according to the organisers, already in the run-up exceeding all expectations.

They further say that already today all tables were booked for the time being. However, as there was still some space available, exhibitors with their own stands or tables were still welcome, they continue; all the rest had to be set on the waiting list for the case of someone cancelling the reservation.

The organiser point out that exhibitors or sellers interested in participation should register as fast as possible. (snx) (Translation: iw)

Status update of the OpenOffice porting
The developers of the Amiga porting of OpenOffice.org inform that so far some of the conditions for a port of the Ofiice packet had already been created; in the meantime Amiga versions of libusb, aspell and neon have been available, a version of csh is already in process.

Additional developers are needed for the buildup of a complete data base with all connections as well as for the completion of the csh port. Those works have to be finished before the beginning of the actual OpenOffice porting.

Interested developers should subscribe the mailing list of the project to obtain further details there.

(Note of the editorial office: the website amigaopenoffice.org has been hacked recently and is therefore currently not available). (cg) (Translation: iw)

New German Printmagazin: RETRO
"Retro" is a new german Printmagazin, but only in german language.

MorphOS: Vector graphics program SteamDraw 0.6R6
In the new version 0.6R5 of Stefan Kleinheinrich's 2D vector graphics program for MorphOS, SteamDraw, primarily some errors were corrected, so that it should now run cleanly under MUI 3.9 as well as MUI 4-alpha and not forget any windows when closing.

A solution was found for the longer lasting problem, that SteamDraw crashed when activating the Arc-Tools, as well.

Furthermore, changes in the generated EPS code were carried out and some problems when moving objects in the positions list were corrected.

Now, SteamDraw requires no Assign anymore either - but those who want to start it via project files should specify the corresponding path as default program in the "images/file" icon.

Likewise new are the subtools in the polygon tool for creating rhombi, deltoids and parallelograms.

Download: SteamDraw.lha (848 KB)

Update: (28.06.2006, 20:30, cg)

In the meantime, version 0.6R6 is available, in which some Enforcer hits during the start activity were corrected. (snx) (Translation: cad)

Individual Computers: new Catweasel driver for Windows/delays
For Windows 2000/XP there's a new Catweasel driver available. As most important change it uses the Kylwalda part of the Catweasel MK4. So the floppy drive can be switched from the onboard floppy controller to the Catweasel and back.

Furthermore does Individual Computers announce under the title link that there will be some delay in delivering the turbo card for the A 600 and the Amiga&n500 version of the IDE controller Buddha because of some remittance work. It is aked not to enquire these products.

There are also some news regarding the delivery: because of insurance wise reasons there's a store since April in use that is 11 km away from the bureau so that because of time saving reasons from August on packages are only delivered on Tuesday. Therefore it could happen that some web shops list some articles as "not available" though they are available at Individual Computers. All products would be indeed availabe in big numbers almost at once. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Tipps & Tricks: CD-ROM with Workbench 1.3
amiga-news.de reader Markus Bartolich has sent us a brief tutorial how to use a CD-ROM drive with AmigaOS 1.3:

"It is possible to mount a CD-ROM withr Workbench 1.3 by using the BabelCDFS. After archive extraction the both files "BABELCDROMFS" and "BabelCDROMCtrl" must be copied to the directory "L:". The mountList in directory "Devs:" has to be expanded by adding the following lines:
* CD-ROM mounten *

CD0: Handler = L:BABELCDROMFS
Startup = gvpscsi.device/5 (Device-Name und Unit bitte anpassen!)
             StackSize = 4000
             Priority = 10
             GlobVec = -1
#

Afterwards the line "mount CD0:" should be added to the file "StartupII", reboot... that's it! I run that method successfully with a CD-ROM under Workbench 1.3 on my A2000 with a GVP-SCSI controller." (cg) (Translation: ub)

AmigaOS 4: FreePascal 2.1.1 (alpha)
Karoly Balogh provides the first alpha version of the FreePascal Pascal compiler. The number of the supported operating system functions is still relatively small, the author describes the port as "not yet suitable for serious developments".

However, with the help of the up-to-date version interested developers should already be able to help with the further adaption to AmigaOS 4. (cg) (Translation: iw)

Spreadsheet software: ignition 1.0 beta 1 released
Press release - Since the development of ignition proceeds much slower than originally anticipated, we decided to release an up-to-date and not restricted beta version.

Your support should push the further development forward. But we're also relying on your help to be able to complete the product. Particularly, we need help with the following things:
  • Revising and completing of the available documentation
  • Translation of that documentation to German and English - other languages are welcome, too, of course
  • Translations of the program texts themselves
  • New and more icons that can be used in the tool bars
  • Reports of existing bugs in the whole package
At least the tree most contributing people will get a free version of <ignition> as a compensation for their help. A mailing list will be available, a bug tracker already is.

We're looking forward to your contributions! (snx)

Individual Computers: The trouble with the C64DTV
Under the title link Lars Sobiraj summarized the explanations given by Jens Schönfeld (Individual Computers) concerning the C-One and C64DTV. According to the well-known hardware developer it lost about 100.000 Euro with the C-One project after the developer Jeri Ellsworth had given already paid work to a different product - the C64DTV - and thus the C-One stayed incompletely. Status-Update of the PowerPoint-Viewer PointRider
The PointRider-author explains in a blog entry the latest status: Because of changes in his job the development of the SDL-based PowerPoint-viewer didn't make a big progress during the last months.

But meanwhile he has created a tool, which searches in an index structure and shows informations of all found PowerPoint-files. Thanks to this tool all the files, which have caused a crash or other problems, could be isolated. The resolution of this problems is in progress now.

The FAQ are revised as well and and completed with new informationens. (cg) (Translation: tz)

  • I've attempted to fix the instability when using DCC SEND under OS3/MOS.. please report back to me if anyones still having problems
  • RESUME support added for outgoing DCC SEND (Incoming RESUME has worked for quite some time, but now it works both ways)
  • There used to be startup text if wookie couldnt load a catalog for your default language. I've since changed this so you only see this text if you run wookie with the "debug" option from shell.

AmigaOS 4: Instant messenger Epistula
The latest version of the instant messengers Epistulacomes with several minor extensions and improvements. There is a plugin for the messaging services AIM/ICQ by AOL available now.

The changes in detail:
  • Documentation is provided in PDF form.
  • All imagery within Epistula is now user configurable. I've used PNG images as IFF won't display correctly on my machine. Note a word of warning though; don't try and use a PNG image with more than 256 colours as it will crash. I need to adapt my code to work with high colour images first.
  • You can now add and remove contacts to and from your contact list, although this will also depend on that functionality being implemented fully in the plugin.
  • Contacts can be moved (dragged and dropped) to and from any groups you have with your contact list. Note that I've found a nasty bug in the add group functionality, so it's disabled for now. A fix will be released VERY soon.
  • Full logging is provided should you need it. If I'm missing anything which you'd like implemented and added to the logs, drop me a line and I'll see it's added for the next update.
  • Docky icon implemented, although it doesn't do anything yet and looks err, dark. Best leave it off until I'm finished with it.
  • Updated catalogs and missing translations from last version fixed. If you spot anything which isn't translated let me know so I can fix it. Note that you should remove any old epistula.catalogs.
  • Nicely re-written plugin removal code which uses new features of dos.library to stop those awful crashes and 'Cannot quit plugin' messages.
  • Your installed MUI Classes are checked to make sure they're the correct version or above.

The ICQ-/AIM plugin is called "TOC" and has been tested with the official client of these services. The program has surpassed all tests already, but since this is the first release the author guesses there might be some glitches still.. File transmission as well as sorting the "Buddy list" is not yet implemented. (cg) (Translation: ub)

Hardware-Hack: Shutting down Pegasos with software
Carsten Siegner has developed a hardware-hack which makes it possible shutting down the Pegasos with software. With the current version of MorphOS this is not possible because the Firmware is completely hidden.

Siegners hack consists of a little wiring which will be connected to the floppy-port of the Pegasos and then can shut down the ATX-power pack of the Pegasos. It is released by little tool developed by Guido Meersmann which controls the connection with the help of the trackdisk.device.

Installation:

The tool "MotorTool_MOSPPC" must be renamed to "Shutdown" and then copied to MOSSYS:C. After building and connecting the hardware now you can shut down the computer with entering "Shutdown" in a Shell-window.

Some versions of Ambient contain the menu point "shut down" - because this also calls up MOSSYS:C/Shutdown the command should shut down the computer as well.

The author points out that he gives no liability if there should be any harm to the hardware which are caused by copying this wiring. You also should have a closer look at the Readme in the programm archive "Motortool.lha".

Construction guidance: Pegasos-Hardwarehack.pdf
Motor tool: MotorTool.lha

Event: updated information about the Amiga-Meeting Nord
From October, 13. to October, 15. does in Bad Bramstedt the Amiga-Meeting Nord take place again. As Sven Scheele announced, already 28 participiants have registered which is a new register record for this point in time. The number of participiants is limited to 40 computers places.

Among the participiants are two developers right now. So will Guido Mersmann show the current development state of his TV cards software Valiant Vision. The AmithlonTV successor will for example receive support for DVB-T/S/C cards.

Sven Dröge will for the first time introduce his new HBCI capable banking software proBanking to the public. The software is still in development. Sven Dröge is the author of the stock exchange software proBonds.

If there's enough interest there will be a small workshop to demonstrate the possibilities of the programming language AmiBlitz2.

With Axel Knabe there'll be a reseller at the meeting, too. There you can among other things have a look at see the current development state of the CD/DVD burner software BurnIt. The release of the program is further delayed but in the meantime it passes through a special beta test.

The organizers want to call once again all developers to use the meeting to show their projects respectively their products to the potential users. For this there's still the offer of a participation at half the normal price. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
I am typing this on one of the hottest days this year, in the midst
of a heat warning that covers more than two full days. Now while
that's no problem for our readers in the southern hemisphere, it's a
pretty good reason for those in this part of the world to just stay
inside and play with your Amiga. We do have information on a couple of
games this issue that could help you pass the time enjoyably.
It has been a pretty quiet month overall and not all the news that
did happen is cheerful. We were disappointed to hear of the canceling
of AmiRevival. This is another sign that the Amiga community really
needs "a shot in the arm" to use an old American expression. It might
have received a bit of a boost this month with the announcement of a
small number of refurbished A1s becoming available. Details below.
And, surprise of surprises perhaps, there's even a cool new expansion
module available for the A600. Glad to see the smallest Amiga still
gets remembered from time to time. But we're still waiting for ready
availability of new hardware. That would really make the summer more
enjoyable. In the meantime, there are some fun things available in the
community. We hope you enjoy reading about a few of them in this
issue.

3 July, 2006

After much deliberation it saddens me (Ryu) to announce AmiRevival
2006 has been cancelled.

I and a few other team members have tried hard to secure exhibitors
over recent weeks with not much success. We had been given assurances
by a few organisations that they would attend, or at least their
products would be there but due to a lack of communications with them
I have made the decision the show would not be viable.

Anyone who has purchased tickets will be getting a full refund in the
next few days and if anyone has made any bookings that will leave them
out of pocket please do contact me. I will do my best to try and
compensate.

Many thanks to those who did pre-book tickets, both visitors and
exhibitors, and thanks to those who contacted me over the past couple
of weeks.

Further more I will be taking a step back from the scene for the
foreseeable future, I will keep IntuitionBase.com online and will
update it from time to time but I won't be sinking much effort into
it. The Scunthorpe Amiga Group will remain but no meetings are
planned, and I won't make any more plans until things pick up again.

Thanks to all those who have supported me over the years, I hope to
keep in touch with you all!

Adios and thanks for all the fish

Amont-Infomatique recently received delivery of a small consignment of
AmigaOne motherboards for testing prior to redistribution among all
AmigaOne dealers worldwide.

They did need some time to test them and prepare the new
configurations, but you will very shortly be able to order a
reconditioned AmigaOne from your favourite dealer!

Warning: quantities will be limited.

Update 16 July 2006 Some µA1-Cs are already ready to go out to
dealers. News of the G4 modules is expected some time next week. Those
wishing to trade in their existing G3 800MHz modules should contact t
heir local dealer for a possible trade-in (not all dealers may offer
this).

This is a quick and dirty port of Quake 3 for OS4. To play, you need
the latest version of the Quake 3 data files (retail version plus all
patches). You also need the latest MiniGL.library (included in this
archive, copy to libs:).

Unpack Quake 3 data files to a directoy (say, dh1:games/Quake3), and
extract the archive there. (As a reference, the quake3 binary should
be in the same directory as the "baseq3" directory).

To launch, alter the q3 batch file (adjust the path according to your
system) and run "q3" from shell.

The port uses the QVM jit, so it can also run all the mods (tested
with Urban Terror).

Source code is available on OS4depot.net too. The port is unpotimized,
so don't expect it to be blazing fast.

it's a spare time project of me. DO NOT write to Hyperion
Entertainment regarding support.

Note: Added gpl.txt. Many thanks to Christian Rosentreter for kindly
making me aware of that.

I. Warning

This version doesn't implement any security features.

II. Prerequisites

You will need at least AmigaOS 4.0 installed on your computer.

III. Installation

Copy the lpd binary to your SYS:Utilities or some other directory.

 Launch the Internet preferences program.
 Select the "Servers" section.
Press the "New..." button to add a new inetd server.
Pick the "printer" service from the list.
Click "Program" and select where you installed the lpd binary.
Make sure "Active" and "Use socket I/O streams" are both checked.

After you save your Internet preferences the lpd server will be
immediately available for use. No reboot required.

IV. Using lpd

The lpd daemon is currently hard-coded to print whatever it receives
directly to PAR: and nothing else.

More options could be added. Please email with your requests.

lpd.debug is also included which can be used to trouble-shoot
problems. It will output all sorts of useful debug to the default
serial port.

MorphOS: GemZ 0.97.0 and Tile World 1.3.0

GemZ 0.97.0

The player has to remove all "jewels" from a field which consists of 8x8 smaller fields. In addition stones lying side by side have to be swaped so that three stones of the same colour form a horizontal or vertical line which will then vanish into thin air.

Tile World 1.3.0

Tile World is a clone of the Arcade veteran Chip's Challenge.

MorphOS: OpenTTD 0.4.8 Release Candidate 2
OpenTTD is an open source clone of the Microprose game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe". The changes in the latest version can be obtained from the changelogs of 0.4.8 RC1 (not published for MorphOS) and 0.4.7. In addition two MorphOS specific problems have been cleared:
  • game doesn't crash anymore if no TCP/IP stack is present (UDP sockets were used even if network-availability was set to false)
  • fixed filerequesters to fix crashes (writes to NULL) when going to directory root in the filerequesters

Filesharing: Amigift 2.0 (Prerelease)
Amigift is a P2P-Filesharing system which is based on the giFT-Dämon (Gnutella, FastTrack, OpenFT) ported from the Unix world and has a graphical user-interface called "GiftMUI". Changes since the last version:
  • Fixed a bug on the Online Updater which fail to update some files due a CRC Checksum error reported by analizing not the correct chunk of data...
  • To reload the daemon from giFTMui a timeout-Timer for daemon shutdown chekout is created, if such timer cannot be created for any reason a 'failed assertion' causes the interface to exit completely, This has been changed to avoid the assert()'ion check and instead trying to bind the daemon port should let us know as well when daemon isn't running to be reloaded. Also, such timeout-Timer calls a dispatcher on intervals of 300000 micro seconds, that value has been changed to 700K as well
  • On a failed assertion situation, the chat tryes to re-connect itself to the server, due a common method from the chat custom class is invoked, this will no longer happen if such method is invoked disposing the class.
  • Recent Ares versions don't report real stats, it's not a bug, at least not on our part. alas, giftd doesn't allow plugins *not* to provide stats, so we just return what the supernode tells us if it's an old supernode then it'll work, if it's not, it won't ...
  • Stats window will no longer be activated while it is opened/updated
  • Added new options to the giFTMui's MUI Settings, you can now load the settings from disk, save them to disk, restore current settings to the last saved, and restore and/or reset the settings to the defaults.
  • Fixed a parser error which has made the Gnutella HTTP requests to be incomplete/truncated causing the supernodes to ignore us and hence there was the problem with this plugin not being able to connect on the latest build.
  • Unfortunatelly there is somewhere some other issue which makes the plugin to take long time to reconnect on shutdown connections.. we should assume the problem comes from the "complicated" input and event notifications mechanism, which seems or probably isnt properly ported on the new shared libraries fashion, any help ?...
  • optimized/improved a bit gift.library's logging facility, while using GLOB_STDERR and GLOB_STDOUT we'll check if pr_COS and pr_CES (which fail back to pr_COS when isnt available) aren't the same and hence avoid logging to both filehandlers. Also giftd.log filesize was checked on each write, making a too unnecessary/possible overload... now only every 1000 writes will be checked, which should be ok as the filesize limit is 10MB ...
  • How FastTrack loads his banlist file and Gnutella loads his hostiles.txt file has been improved. Previously it was just Open()'ing the file and reading line-by-line, to read each line gift.library/file_read_line() was used, which function does "free-old-buffer > read-line-from-file > dup-line-to-memory", NOW we just "slurp" the whole file into memory and process it later internally in one step.
    PROS: should be working faster
CONS: it needs the filesize's memory at once (about ~500KB)
  • The maximun number of connections which OpenFT guess at startup has been down to 30 (it was 255) ... you can always override that value by using the appropiate option (max_active)
  • How to request network statistics and how to launch the inspector has been changed... there may be now a bit more overload from the GUI but it will no longer require two standalone-signals on connection for the timers we used...
  • Searches by realm should be now working fine for all networks.
  • VerifyIncoming tool must be performed while the daemon isnt running, and giFTMui do not checked for that, Fixed.
  • Optimized how data is received from the daemon... For information, previously we was receiving line-by-line and then processed each line/packet, that data was received reading byte-by-byte until a CRLF is found, furthermore we checked if that was a multi-line string (comming from a "malformed" META data though), which slowed even more the process... NOW we just receive all data available at once, and the data received are procesed internally without congesting the socket...
  • There may be some situations where a Inspector could not work properly or fail without notice, those are RARE cases though!, What we have noticed is a little problem on the inspector process while a method is pushed to select the next entry on the downloads list, if in the process the user de-select the active entry or select an entry from the uploads list (which action automatically disables any active entry on the downloads list) once the pushed method take action on the next app loop the inspector will fail to continue as it was unable to get the information needed (from the active entry on the list) to launch a locator, at this step the inspector stopped working internally, but to the user eyes it is running (but doing nothing), and thats the only thing we have found buggy on the inspector procedure (at least for now), now if that happens the inspector will be properly fully aborted and in addition the user will be warned of the issue.
  • Ghosting of the Stop button when it is clicked didn't worked properly to be re-enabled while using multi-lists, Fixed.
  • Searches directed to the Ares network (by using giFTMui's protocol checkmark) and Locators launched for this same network wasn't working properly due a very stupid bug... the protocol name to be used on a search request and the check for online plugin state is fetched/detected given the network's HASH type, Ares uses "SHA1" and Gnutella "SHA", and on both functions we checked for the three first bytes of the Gnutella hash before than the Ares hash, making request directed to the Ares network interpreted like if what we wanted is about the Gnutella netowrk, FIXED!
  • Sometimes a Locator cannot stablish the connection to the daemon due the connect event isn't notifyed... fixed...(hopefully!, and hopefully without side effects..)
  • Fixed some string mismatch issues at giFTMui.cd, where updated strings at the build-in laungage wasn't at his time adapted as well on the catalog descriptor. Most important are string numbers #447, #417, #407, #380, #323, #321 where a formatting was changed (%s to %ld or viceversa), also strings #595, #593, #585, #593, #553, #166, #145, #142, #54 and #5 was minimal corrected for typos.
  • Some users reported a issue about the OpenFT nodes file ends with 0 bytes of size and making on the next run unable to connect to the network, with the need of the user manually replacing the file, well, first is needed to mention that this happens due OpenFT do not stores nodes where we was unable to connect, but theres some factors to consider which that plugin leave out...(ie, dynamic IPs, not a 24/7 node, etc), also I should mention that Im in doubt if theres a bug somewhere since that behaviour do not happens from the first porting of the plugin, or it wasn't reported on the very firsts builds IIRC, so there will be two workarround for now to that issue, 1) the nodes file size will be checked and deleted if his size is 0, forcing the plugin to copy the nodes from the data dir (amigift:daemon/data/openft/). 2) the plugin will check for the enviroment variable DONT_PURGE_OPENFT_NODES before updating the nodes to disk, if such variable is found it will NOT try to leave out nodes where we was unable to connect. NOTE this way of "fixing" that issue is TOO lame and hence subject to change...
  • Added a new giftd command-line option: TASKPRI/N Obviously is behaviour is to change the daemon task priority, giFTMui has a new slider object to change it as well.
  • giFTMui has been translated to Italian language, Thanks a lot to Samir Hawamdeh for his work.
  • German and Swedish catalogs contains some issues and has been renamed on the packages until they are fixed...
  • bzlib.library can be now loaded from amigift:libs/ as well
  • Starting a new search we will check now if any/some of the networks are online, warning the user if there is no online network and not proceding with the search then.
  • Default Ares port for giFTMui settings was missing, Fixed.
  • Requesters Timeout handling and downcheck was enabled by default where the appropiate is to have both disabled at a first run.
  • some very little internal fixes...
