Snoqualmie, WA, August 21, 2000 - Amiga (www.Amiga.com) has announced today an agreement with Red Hat, Inc. (NASDAQ: RHAT), the leader in open source internet infrastructure, to provide high performance multimedia for the Linux platform. The agreement gives the Redhat.com community access to Amiga's Software Developer Kit. Bill McEwen, Amiga President/CEO, said that the company selected Red Hat because of its leadership and abilities to assist in the development of the new Amiga.

"The Amiga community has already created significant content including games and exciting Java applications with the Amiga SDK. With the response that we received from the members of the Red Hat team, they clearly understand what the Amiga has meant to the development of personal computer as we know it today. And more important, they are eager to provide support and add significantly to the solid foundation we have been developing," McEwen said.

"We're excited to be working with Amiga," said Paul McNamara, VP of Products and Platforms at Red Hat. "With a multimedia consumer layer available with Red Hat as the foundation, new markets and new users will be able to take advantage of Linux and the software available on Redhat.com."

"The strategic relationship and partnership with the Tao Group in Reading, England (www.tao-group.com) that we announced at the beginning of this year, added to this support from Red Hat, gives the New Amiga a very exciting and real story," McEwen added.

The new Amiga SDK is the embodiment of the Amiga multimedia computing experience. With tools, support, and exciting new applications already in development for the new Amiga, developers can quickly begin creating games, multimedia applications, and can use Java for even more opportunities. With the purchase of the SDK a developer will receive free updates for the next 12 months, and the scout level of Amiga's support program.

AmiWest 2000 Reports by Rick Rudge and Brian Deneen
Rick Rudge's report is divided into two parts. In the first part he describes his impressions. The second part is about the speech of Bill McEwen at the AmiWest-bankett.

Brian Deneen's report is very detailed and describes the fair as well as the bankett:

AmiWest'2000 Report
by Brian Deneen, President, Sacramento Amiga Computer Club

From the moment I walked into the room, I knew something good was happening. I saw people that I knew (Roger Berry, Bill Clay and John Zacharias) being helped by someone I didn't know (Rick Rudge) to get ready for AmiWest 2000. Registration packets were being stuffed, AmiWest 2000 banquet tickets printed, and special show edition Amigazettes being stapled. I joined that last activity on Thursday before the show.

The reason I knew something good was happening was the evidence of smiles and the cameraderie being shared. Many have commented, both inside and outside Amigadom, about the spirit of the Amiga community. We are a very creative group of people for whom no other computer platform will do. And that very creativity, shared and enhanced, is what made that Thursday (and the rest of the weekend) special during AmiWest 2000.

Those who are less creative, who need some sort of huge corporate presence to hide behind, might think that "spirit" is amusing. If that's your style, you are more than welcome to it. I, for one, have worked for the two largest organizations in the entire world while they held that status (AT&T and the US Army) and would rather be smaller and more creative than suffocate in corporate gridlock. The current spectacle of the PC world is ample evidence of such gridlock for any who want to observe. I'll take my opportunities with "leaner and meaner" platforms and companies.

This creative spirit was evident in all of the vendors present. Hyperion Entertainment was an example, with Hyperion Belgium represented in force along with the US representative, James Sellman. (As an aside, James Sellman had NEVER MET his boss from Belgium, Ben Hermans, until AmiWest this year, after 10 years of working with him long-distance!) They loaded up their software and had it running during the show, a graphics and sound tour de force for the serious gamer. Another example was ProStation Audio with Jim Sutcowicz and Floyd Diebel, both members of our club. They have seen great development of their software with their Italian partner and had what they deemed a successful show.

Another example is Kermit Woodall of Nova Design, who sold out and said he'll be back next year. We met on Saturday night at the banquet in the buffet line, having a nice conversation about music and musicians prompted by my wearing my musicians' work clothes (a tuxedo) to the banquet. On Sunday, I sat down at his booth and asked him to show me what his software does, explaining along the way that I'm kind of the village idiot when it comes to image manipulation. Half an hour later, I was writing a check for the latest version of Image FX, the first absolutely brand new Amiga software that I have ever purchased. After I watched his booth for a few minutes, we discussed ideas for AmiWest 2001. He had some good things to say and we may be using some of his ideas in the future. For any of you who have used his software or seen the results of those who do, I think it safe to say that Kermit is one of our most creative community members. He was begin ably aided by Darreck Lisle, present at previous AmiWests as a Gateway Amiga representative.

Our own Jim Sutherland was also present, observing and helping us arrive at prices for software and hardware that he donated to benefit the club. SACC members like Jim make our club great and we a glad that Jim is with us. SACC as a club is full of creative people who use the Amiga because nothing else will do. Reliable, flexible, programmable and configurable, with an OS (1.3-3.1) called by Byte magazine the most elegant available, the Amiga demonstrates staying power like no other platform in the world.

Other vendors who did very well were Pagestream, who sold out of product even while the company was moving to Wisconsin through an innovative rep arrangement; CompuQuick, who did very well and commented that people buy more at AmiWest than at other shows they had attended; and Eyetech, who had some amazing things to show and sell (including a new developer machine that combined an Amiga 1200 and a 500 MHz PC in a DESKTOP case) and said they will be back next year - FROM ENGLAND! FWD Computing was very friendly and gave an address of someone handling hardware and software. Merlancia Industries was selling both Amiga Hardware and Software and probably should get the "overflowing booth" prize for having the most on hand. AmigaZone with Harv Laser, founder and SYSOP, was there signing up new customers. G & G Publishing Enterprises, publisher of "The New Amigans" magazine, also signed up new subscribers. NorthWest Amiga Group, Inc. (another User Group selling Amiga memorabilia and T-shirts) made at least their second appearance at AmiWest. Anti-Gravity Products of Boxer fame had Joe Torre as their rep onsite. AmigaOnLine.NET (a nationwide just for Amiga Internet Provider) was demonstrating the advantages of their service. Lostman Robert Hamilton was selling his original design T-Shirts, shorts, and sweats. AEMail was ably represented by programmer John Zacharias. The vendors were a healthy representation of the major players in today's Amiga scene.

Then there was a significant list of 10 seminars given throughout the two days of the show by very knowledgeable people, some of them (such as Kermit Woodall, Joe Torre, and Floyd Diebel) developers of the software/hardware they were demonstrating. We were priveleged to have such a crew of knowledgeable presenters and look forward to having them back and expanding the list next year. We also hope to see Bob and Diana Scharp, organisers of the Amiga shows in St. Louis and producer of "Bounce Back Videos" (video taping the show) back next year.

SACC's own Jack and Rita McCann headed up this year's raffle effort raising money for AmiWest. They did a raffle every hour on the hour and provided a sense of structure for the days of the show. The highlight of each raffle day was the raffling of a new A1200 computer, donated to the show by Petro from Germany. The raffle stage was also graced on Saturday morning by a group singing a song about Jay Miner. Lots of enthusiasm and smiles were obvious all around.

The Jay Miner Memorial Library was also exhibited for the first time. Bookcases loaned by Michael Salcedo and Ray Washburn, both of SACC, housed the library for its first exhibition ever. This software library was the personal software library of Jay Miner, father of the Amiga 1000 computer. It contains many original and one-of-a-kind items proudly displayed on the show stage.

User Group Network's new chair Bill Borsari gave a seminar, assisted by Robert Hamilton, Joanne Calhoun, and others. This is a focus for our club, as the UGN is serving as a quasi-official channel for information from Amiga Inc. While Amiga Inc. also has their corporate user-group liason, UGN is also being employed as an information channel. Bill Borsari called for a new look to the UGN as a cooperative body, freely and creatively sharing information between user groups. One function of this sharing might be the development of a database of newsletter articles so that information could be quickly disseminated through the UGN server. Moderation of this forum is an issue but the idea is a good one.

One thing the UGN is helping with is the Amiga road tour, announced at AmiWest by Amiga Inc. president Bill McEwen. The tour, to take place in October, will highlight developments by Amiga Inc. using the larger user groups as geographical centers. SACC was the first one on the map with our larger membership and assignment to reach out to a 200-mile radius around Sacramento. You will see more on this as we get more information.

Amiga Inc. was represented at AmiWest 2000 by President Bill McEwen, Randall Hughes and Bob Cosby (the COZ). Bill, Randy and Bob were very cordial and forthcoming, very knowledgeable veterans of the computer wars. Bob was joining the company the evening of the banquet and I witnessed what he said was his first meeting with Bill. Bob has done everything from hand-building industrial hard-disk drives for Ampex somewhere in the dim, dark past to, most recently, telecommuting from Walnut Creek for a software firm located in (if I remember correctly) Pismo Beach. He is now in quality assurance at Amiga Inc. Randy worked for QNX before signing on with Amiga Inc. 18 months ago and is travelling with Bill to see things.

The Saturday night banquet was truly exciting. Access Sacramento was there with multiple cameras and portable control booth to get a good video of the banquet. One of the original Amiga beta testers, Annette Daniels, was running one of those cameras. (Another member of the original Amiga team, Dale Luck, paid a visit to AmiWest late on Sunday afternoon.) I was seated at the head table in order to present our SACC Ken Barton memorial award. Others there included John & Jan Zacharias and granddaughters, Bill McEwen (Amiga Inc. president), Bob Cosby (the COZ, to those of you who know), and Randall Hughes (of Amiga Inc.).

John opened the banquet by inviting us all to line up at the buffet, a sumptuous meal whose equal would be difficult to find at any but the finest restaurants. (And yes, I am an experienced diner, having dined extensively on two continents.) Good conversation was had by all while serving. Then we presented the Ken Barton memorial award to John Zacharias, who received it with appropriate ceremony.

Then, it was on to an Amiga television commercial featuring BB King and several others who were using state-of-the-art Amigas (circa 1988) in a variety of creative ways, from undersea exploration to flight simulation to graphics design and production to music. Then the featured speaker took the podium.

Bill McEwen, of course, was our featured banquet speaker. I won't try to summarize the speech for you, just highlight some of the things that stood out to me.
  • One of the things I was glad to hear was that Amiga Inc. does have a corporate development group working on hardware configurations to run the new OS. In other words, there will be a new Amiga computer, the Amiga One. Third party manufacturers will build them specifically for the new OS software.
  • Bill showed film clips of two interviews (one on CNN and the other on another network) that he had done within that past two months. A news feature on that other network was also shown. Bill has been busy promoting the product and doing it well. And the tapes he was showing were, he mentioned, provided FREE OF CHARGE for public presentation, something that just doesn't happen in the media world (others are charged up to $10,000 per tape). Unless, of course, you're Amiga!
  • A New York Times reporter came to Washington state to interview Bill and see the new corporate headquarters. The standard time frame for such visits is about 30 minutes to an hour at most. She spent four and a half hours talking to Bill, touring the building, etc. Probably found more creativity per square foot there than most anywhere else on the planet!
  • Discussions with Corel, Red Hat and many unnamed software producers are progressing well; you can read about the agreements reached so far on the web site at www.amiga.com.
  • Another welcome development: the new OS will run classic Amiga software. Bill said, in a passing comment, that "we have something better than emulation" that will accomplish this.
  • The OS software was actually demonstrated on two screens on either side of the speaker's platform and covering most of the wall there (probably about 15 by 20 feet per screen). Complex images were loaded and performed flawlessly, manipulated in real time at any speed desired. Bill kicked the OS up on Linux and on Windows, then plugged in a diskette to load a program (the same program) called "Tunnel" into BOTH systems. It loaded very quickly and flew along without a hitch. Clearly, something revolutionary is happening here.
  • The new company acknowledged their debt to the Amiga community. "If you hadn't stuck it out there would have been nothing for us to buy" was, I believe, the gist of Bill's very laudatory comments. By the way, Bill McEwen had never even SEEN an Amiga computer until AmiWest '98 here in Sacramento. Now he heads up the company. No gridlock here!
  • The Amiga road show was announced for the end of October, designed to showcase the current state-of-the-art of Amiga. More details as they become available.
  • Bill also announced the new Amiga developer program. After highlighting the huge sums of money other companies ask of their developers up front, before any sales are made (from Sony at $250,000.00 to Microsoft at a cool $1,000,000.00), Bill announced that Amiga Inc. is asking $1.50 per unit sold from its developers to participate in its programs. Those programs are to include purchasing retail space in computer stores (endcaps, etc.), using the official Amiga logo on packaging, and having access to technical developer information. That $1.50 per unit is, of course, a minimum, but my information source (an Amiga developer) has it that the MOST they are charging anyone is under $50,000.00 for access to everything accessible, clearly miniscule compared to even $250,000.00. Bill said they are doing this to include everyone who has been faithful during the lean times; they don't want to leave anyone out. They intend to reward those who have been in the community the whole time. Again, the creative approach to software creation.

I'm sure that other things were said; these were my standouts. The banquet was a very exciting evening. I'm glad that I was there and plan to attend next year.

AmiWest 2000 was the place where substantial announcements were made, people got acquainted and re-acquainted, and a good time was had by all. It was a lot of work but, like anything worthwhile, the reward came in a job well done. Thanks to all of you who participated. Come back next year and invite your friends and business associates. As the T-shirts that Amiga Inc. handed out to everyone at the banquet said, "It took them 15 years to catch up - now they never will."

AMI Sector One with New Features
Bernd Gmeineder wrote:
AMI Sector One - the famous site for legal Amiga software downloads is back. During the last three month while AMI Sector One has not been updated our crew worked on a completely new layout and some new features.

The most impressive innovation surely is the area "A-Compendiums", which contains a searchable database of about 1400 Amiga games at the moment. In addition to credits for software companies, programmers, graphics artists, sound artists and musicians, more information like release year and emulator compatibility is listed. The database will grow to about 5000 games and 1500 applications. We also could get many licenses of software companies: Some are "Vulcan" and "UDS" (More will be published soon). Therefore we have new games like "Valhalla", "Obsession Pinball", "Skate Tribe", "Serene 2" and others.

Heise: Canon-Printer with "Date of Decay"
«Yesterday, in this way German ZDF-economic broadcast "WISO" reported about the case of an owner of a BubbleJet 600. This spring the four years old device started printing out the warning tank of remaining ink would be full soon after each printed piece of paper. After a little time the printer claimed remaining tank being full and finished work. The ingeneer looked after but neither tank nor absorbing felt has been soiled particularly. To be on the safe side he cleaned everything - but in vain. Printer didn`t start working again.

According to WISO Canon-hotline confirmed the printer has been provided with a counter for the drops of ink given off which stops the device as a precaution after 15000 pieces of paper printed out (depending on the kind of printing) - independent of the fact if the catching tank actually was full or not. The broadcast did find out BubbleJet 600 can be persuaded starting its work again by holding the keys "Power", "Form Feed" and "Print Mode" while putting in the main plug and switching on the printer.« For full Report have look at title link.

IRC Chat Server will be Switched Off
This is not a special amiga thing but I often see users using AmIRC at the IRC-NET. The oldest chatserver irc.uni-erlangen.de became a target of massive DDoS attacks from england yesterday (sunday). The IRC-operators were forced to cut the connection of the chatserver off because the homepage of the university of erlangen was not longer reachable. With that the premiere HUB-server for the whole EU was offline. If someone attacks irc.freenet.de now the whole EU will be cut off from the IRCNET.

irc.uni-erlangen.de will be online again by tomorow. Some of the attackers came from germany. Hopefully they will be soon uncovered and be called to account.

Amiga Future: Secret Revealed !
The future of the German Amiga games magazine "Amiga Future"
The end ?   NO !   A new begining !

Andreas Magerl explains the future on a special page (German). In fact the so far publisher the Falke-Verlag will discontinue production and selling of Amiga Future after issue #27 because of commercial considerations.

Preventing the last Amiga game magzin from being closed Andreas Magerl will continue to work with his editors. Selling will be based on subscriptions. Therefore you have to know that Andreas Magerl was responsible for the content and the Falke-Verlag for the layout and sales. Because he has not the marketing channels as a big publishing house has, the further existence depends on the number of subscriptions. A subscription form is available here. At the moment there are 6 issues availabel for 60 DM with costs of shipment inclusive (insdide of Germany).

InstallKit V3.8 and Locale for NewInstaller
Airsoft released version 3.8 for the InstallKits and an update for the locale files for NewInstaller V1.5 on August, 13th 2000.

The CD32 Games Install Kit now supports some additional games and is now significant more flexible in booting. Furthermore many loaders have been overworked.

Version 1.6 for NewInstaller will keep us waiting for some more time, thus there is a single release of the updated translations by ATO, at the first.

SViewIV als ImageFX-Loader
All owners of a keyfile for SViewIV can now use SViewIV as loader module for ImageFX V2.6+ due to the SuperView IFX loader module. By the use of the optional PPC module, the SuperView library, download time can be reduced notedly. SViewIV supports more than 30 graphics formats.

Anyone who owns a valid keyfile for SViewIV now also can utilize the
new "SUPERVIEW" IFX loader module with ImageFX 2.6 and above - it's
distributed as part of the main program, but add-on wise.

Additional ultra-speed can be achieved through SuperView-Library's
optional PPC modules - which are working completely transparently.

Additional information on SViewIV/PPC can be found under
http://www.ar-kleinert.de - including download links to
Aminet and to the RegNet creditcard-based online registration site.

If you can't wait, here's some more information.
SViewIV comes with the following SVObject loaders for images:

- IFF-ACBM - Windows,OS/2 BMP - PNM (PBM,PGM,PPM)
- IFF-ILBM - JPEG (JFIF v6) - IMG (GEM Graphics)
- IFF-DEEP - PhotoCD - WPG (WP Bitmaps)
- IFF-FAXX - TIFF - MacPaint MAC
- IFF-PBM - PCX - EPS (Header/PS)
- IFF-RGB8 - Atari Degas - C64 (Koala, Doodle)
- IFF-RGBN - Spectrum ZX - TIM
- IFF-RGFX - XWD - FBM
- IFF-YUVN - Windows Icon - CDR-Previews
- QRT/POV Raytrace - Mac PICT-2 - SGI
- SPP - SVG - Targa
- Pictor/PCPaint - SunRaster - UtahRLE
- PNG - CVP (passphoto) - Icons (WB/Magic/New)

and 24 Bit DataTypes (picture.datatype V43).

Many formats with 24 Bit-Support.
Reads XPK- and PP20-packed data via Unpack.svobject.

Computer Channel Newsticker: new Amiga computers with Matrox graphics cards
«Amiga wants to revitalize the legendary computer of the 80th: "We want to bring the Amiga-One to the markets in November", said Petro Tyschtschenko, CEO of Amiga Germany. But, according to information available to Computer Channel the manufacturer seems not to be able to fulfill this intention. The new computers might be anticipated not until spring 2001.

For the bringing onto the market there also should be new Amiga games and an image processing application too, these shall be running on all computer platforms, such as Windows, Linux, and Mac.»

Pictris Released
APC&TCP today has released a new game. Pictris is available directly from APC&TCP from now, and after a few days from the Amiga specialized trade, of course. Pictris is kind of a puzzle game. The player's job is to mark the right boxes on the screen by mathematical hints, in order to uncover the picture as fast as possible. The faster this has been done, the higher the score gets. All in all there are 240 different puzzles with different skill levels availabel.

A demo version of the game is available on the home page, and of course also at Aminet. A few days ago a subsequent demo version of SeaSide was released, which was available since November 1999.

This comptetion is about to solve a difficult mathematic problem by the cumulative calculation power of many networked computers. Background informations on OGR and RC5 are to find at distributed.net, informations on networked computers in general also are to find in issue 32/2000 of the SPIEGEL magazine.

New Executive Update

August 8, 2000 - Greetings to the Global Amiga Family

It has been a hectic several weeks, and we are moving even faster this week.

There will be some new announcements in the next few days that should be of interest to everyone as we work hard to expand the members of the Amiga family.

I would like to say a big "Thank You" to everyone who attended the show in Sacramento California, and another special thank you to John and Jan Zacharius and the rest of the SACC team. They did a great job.

I am writing this letter as a quick answer to some questions that I have received in the last 48 hours.

As mentioned before, if you hear something that you need to confirm, ask. Every member of the Amiga team is more than willing to answer questions. It gets somewhat tiresome to constantly get rumors sent to us after they have been out there for several days or even weeks.

Here are answers to two rumors that need to be addressed immediately:
  1. Once you sell the remaining A1200's you are pulling out of Germany.

Answer: No. We have no plans of pulling out of Germany. In fact we are looking at ways to increase our presence in all of Europe, Asia, South America, and even here in North America. There are several ideas on the table, and even some names have been attached to the ideas. There will more information available when we are ready to share the plans.

We are certainly not going to disregard the business in these markets. We are a growing company and very excited about the future.
  2. You are going to begin selling new A4000's and there are already 1,000 of these new A4000's being built.

Answer: Who came up with this one? There is no manufacturing of any Amiga except the new desktop, notebook, and handheld in the works.

I have asked before, and now I will ask again, please stop these rumors. If you hear one, contact any member of the Amiga Team directly, and we will answer you.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kindest regards,
Bill McEwen, and the rest of the Amiga Team (ps)

Software updates by Andreas Kleinert
In recent days, PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX has released the following updates:
  • akJFIF version 44.82
  • akPNG version 44.82
  • akTIFF version 44.82
  • SViewIV version 9.10
  • SV-PPC-Module version 24.8

Aside from the usual code maintenance, small and large speed improvements could be achieved everywhere, with differing results on low- and high-end systems (depending on CPU power and memory bandwidth). All programs can be downloaded from the website at the title link.

We do not supply benchmarks, because we think they are worthless unless everybody could verify them on his own (e.g. by using an open source benchmark program, freely available graphics files and a clear system description).

Catweasel ISA Available Again
Today, the first Catweasel ISA boards from the current production run have been shipped. Despite major supply problems we were able to keep delays within limits, the deadline was exceeded by less than a week. The stongly increased demand can now be fully satisfied. To keep the board producable in the year 2000, the "Y2K edition" recieved some cosmetic canges. The board looks different, but is fully software compatible with the 1996 model. It now fits better, and a protection against floppy cables attached in the wrong pin order has been added.

With the Catweasel for the PC you can read Amiga disks as well as all other formats the Catweasel knows, and uses them in emulators. For exsample, the usual formats for all Amiga and C64 emulators are supported. Catweasel works with the usual PC disk drives, so you don't need "original" drives like the 1541 from the Commodore C64.

Ref: News 15.07.2000 - New Virus Discovered
On 07/15/2000 we published a message by Andre Gobet. This message was wrong. The authors of the concerned CD Techno DataBase 00 put our attention on that.

The problems were not caused by a virus but by the replacement of some systemfiles during the automatic installation process. These lead to some incompatibility with the installed OS 3.5. If Andre had read the manual he had known that there was the posibility to make an installation by hand.

We and Andre Gobet are very sorry for this failure

For some time APC&TCP offers the CD-ROMs "Best of Scene Archives" and "Scene Archives #9". For a few days "Scene Archives #10" too. Some users asked us if the numbers 1 to 8 are also available, because it is a risk to mail 120 DM to australia. But these is not possible because we do not think that the slaerates would be high enough to cover our costs.

But APC&TCP we tried to find a solution. We negotiated with the australian author and decided to make some kind of collecting-order.

Comparison between AmigaOE and Microsoft's .net
In his article Jonathan Clark compares the AmigaOE-System by Amiga/Tao with the .net-system by Microsoft.

Both systems use a virtual processor but have huge differences, too. AmigaOE always uses the little Endian-display, Microsoft offers depending on the processor little or big Endian. In addition, .net contains more type-information in its VP-code. AmigaOE offers a complete OS with Java which can run independently while .net will strongly depend on the WIN32-API and makes operation difficult on Unix-systems.

This and other points are described better in Clark's article.

Voyager 3.3 Alpha as well as Spurious Offers
Oliver Wagner released an alpha version of Voyager V3.3 on August, 4th 2000. This version is presentating the new layout engine. This alpha version is not ought to replace a running browser, due to essential features are still missing such like FORMs (objects are created but have no function yet), FRAMES, IFRAMES and JavaScript (code is present but not active yet). Sending in bug reports, missing features or similar therefore is not necessary.

At shareit.com spurious entries of Vapor programs at immense prices were made. These entries were not made by Vapor and hence should be left ignored.

Vapor belongs to the MorphOS alpha testers and there might be a V-port, but at the time beeing there are no fixed plans of doing one. Concentration points on finishing the new version for AmigaOS.

AmigAIM 0.9384 Beta
On 4th August 2000 Richard H. Poser released beta version 0.9384 of his AIM "AmigAIM". Since the last release there are the following changes:
  • New: Mail-Checking-System.
  • New "Mail-Check-Window" for sound and notifications.
  • The directory structure was slightly changed and should be readjusted at the first start of the software after the update.
  • At the first start one must select the user the program shall begin with, since this save format changed, too.
  • A Problem in the relogin system was fixed. The start window was send to sleep mode under many circumstanced, even if it realy should not do that.
  • There are still some CyberGuard/Enforcer hits, but those could only be reproduced random, so far.
  • The IO packet window now supports Cut'n Paste, so the last values bevore/after an error including all CyberGuard/Enforcer hits can be sent to the author.
  • Notice: In the case of Miami it is recommended to use at least Miami V2.1p, V3.2b or MiamiDX V1.0c - with those AIM was tested successfull.

AIM requires MUI V3.8 and serveral custom classes.

Coyote Flux Opens Temporary Website
Since the 68k->PPC assembly porter/language PPC680x0 was finished a little while ago, Coyote Flux has opened a temporary website at www.coyoteflux.tmfweb.nl

PPC680x0 will be released on Haage&Partner's StormC 4 CD appearing in October this year. Take a look at the website to find out more about PPC680x0, Burnin' Rubber 2000, Super Amicon and more...

PPC680x0 is an assembler program which is able to convert 680x0 sourcecode to PPC sourcecode. This could change all 68k programs easily to PPC. The programmers, by the way, are the guys who had to pose as a popular camera subject with their Amiga bobble hats on almost all fairs.

Heise: Quarrel about Words: After Explorer and Samba now ASP
«After Explorer, Webspace and Samba now another popular EDP term became the object of trademark quarrels: the specialist book author Volker Jungbluth asked several companies in the last weeks to refrain from using his wordmark "ASP".»

«1998, Jungbluth registered the describing term "Site Promotion" as wordmark and then sent the internet consultor Andreas Roemer a warning plus a cashing up of 1895,21 D-Mark (about US$900) because of alleged trademark violation.»

«The German ASP consortium which represents more than 60 companies, has called upon Jungbluth to draw back the registered trademark. Jungbluth denied this, said consortium speaker Werner Grohmann: ",Now our lawyers become active; currently an expert's report is beeing made."»

Heise: Wave of dissuasions against Open Source Network Software Samba (Update)
«Offerors of support for the open source software Samba are effected by a wave of dissuasions. Several companies part of a list in the web recieved a letter demanding them no longer to offer, advertise for, distribute or utilize Samba for buissnes communiction. Samba is an application which allows to use Unix and Linux platforms for server and client in a Windows network. This free for download program belongs to the most popular successful projects of the open source software area. The name SaMBa comes from the SMB protocoll used in Windows networks.» Entire article at the titlelink (German).

In the meanwhile I have a notion that dissuasions are mutating into a marketing strategy and are no longer ought to enforce rights, but only to serve the purpose to arrest attention. The senders of these dissuasions can be sure of the entire press to jump at this subject. The advertising effect is invaluable, cause even negative advertising is in fact advertising, as already well known. That often very enthusiastic people who worked hard and often without any payment for their project are driven to economic ruin by this, is just the fly shit falling through the grid. :-(

Supplement 04 Aug 2000:
CMG statement on SAMBA
«In the meanwhile emerged the responsibility of name for open source software belongs to an Australian internet company. CMG will contact this company and try to achieve an agreement, so that the in Germany incidentally same name can no longer lead to any misconceptions.

At the same time CMG will stop the dissuasiveness procedure against the contacted companies, which just offer support for the open source software. Also no further dissuasivenesses are planned. After all it is not CMG's intention to harm the buisness of open source offerors or to handicap distribution or use of these products.»

AROS-ML

AROS Status Update
Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 12:00:20 +0200
To: AROS Announce mailto:aros-announce@aros.org
Reply-To: aros-announce@lists.hepe.com
Subject: [AROS-Announce] Status update

BGUI has been completely ported to AROS, now. This means that the library
can be compiled and that all demos run. Cudos go to Stefan Berger.

Michael Schulz is working on making mice work on AROS Native/i386.
This includes work on a PCI.HIDD, an IRQ.HIDD, the VGA.HIDD and the
Serial.HIDD plus an IDE driver. Trackdisk is there, too, so the
next thing is to find a filesystem to use. We try to get SFS because
it seems one of the best filesystems for the Amiga at this time.
The SFS developers seem to be very positive to this, we'll see what
comes from it.

As for the Sowatec AG hiring
developers for AROS, all I can say at this time is that we had several
job interviews and things look quite good. The only thing that might
break it at this time (as I see it) is that we get not enough people.
We figured that we need four developers and last I looked, we had three
and one interview still open. Don't hold your breath but press your
thumbs :-)

Nils Henrik Lorentzen has begun to write a framebuffer.HIDD which
uses Linux' framebuffer for rendering. Right now, it's mostly for
debugging (it's a synchronous interface instead of X11s' asynchronous
one) but maybe, there will be a AROS Native/linux-i386, ie. a
version of AROS that will boot with the help of a Linux kernel
but without the need to install a complete Linux system. We'll
see what can be done here.

And I'm diving into the depths of Ami, the SDK for the next Amiga
by Amiga Inc.. As it looks, the
SDK is a bit disappointing because it's very rough and has lots of
holes but on the positive side, Amiga's crew is very helpful and
the developer support is just great. *sigh* Had we just had such
a support in the old C= days. Many thanks for their effort go to
Ray A. Akey and Gary Peake and all the members of the
Tao and Amiga
support staff that I'm bombing with EMails ;-) If they can keep this
attitude, then I have no doubt that in five or ten years, people
will name Ami in the same breath as Windows, EPOC and Linux.
Something really to look forward to.

As for stats, I'm proud that we made 40k hits on our web page and
this year has also been very productive from the EMail side: Last
year, there were about 300KB mails/month in the developer list.
This year, we have 1MB mails/month ! Thanks go to all those
members of the development team that have not been mentioned here
but who do important stuff, nonetheless (in no order): Henning
Kiel and Lars Bischoff for reporting bugs, Georg Steger for
cleaning up after the other developers have raged through the
code and calling me back to earth when necessary, Jaime Dias for
asking "stupid" questions that make us think what we're doing,
Manuel Lemos for trusting us with BGUI, Requin Frederic for
helping Michael Schulz, Tobias Seiler for continuing the NetBSD
port, Bernardo Innocenti for bugging people to allow us to port
their software to AROS and last but not least all those people
who I forgot :-) Thanks to you all; it's your
work that makes this possible.

And at the end, a short note to all those people who started own
ports of the AmigaOS: Good luck to you all. I think you will find
out soon enough why AROS took soo long. The AROS team is still
willing to share their knowledge and code with everyone out
there. And we can do this because of the MPL, the only true Open
Source license :-)

"Publius" - The Web against Internet Censorship beeing Tested
«"Share and rule" - the classic formula to ensure one's power now apparently is turning against the governing people. Initiated by computer scientists from AT&T and the New York University a two month lastig experiment of a "censorship resident" publication system starts. On Tuesday 02. August 2000 the distribution of the proxy server shall start up, on 7. August 2000 the testing of the client software will begin.

The Publius named system ensures the promulgation of web releases similar to FreeNet by putting them on numerous servers using the peer-to-peer technique, and under some circumstances this will be done by splitting the files. Hence it becomes harder for potential or existing censorship offices to close documents in this system by carrier liabilities. More over that Publius relies on multible endcoding: It is only possible to decode the pages after all the splitted framents has been put together again. For the carrier of a server those pages are unreadble. For this reason the carrier cannot be hold responsible for content he/she is not able to know.»

Mojo Nation: Another new System for File Sharing
«While Napster and Scour (after music the movies) are fighting for their future and one of the atlernative share servers, CuteMX, had closed for the time beeing waiting for the smoke to disapear, which came from the injunction against Napster, which was suspended again in the meantime, Mojo Nation started their test run and touts for users with an amount of features most of the competitors could not offer, yet. E.g. the software even supports it's own micropayment feature, as no other does by now.»

«Those seven cypherpunks believe that they have created the next "killer application" for the internet whith their sophisticated system. "We are a mixture of Napster and eBay", blew Jim McCoy, CEO of Autnomous Zone Industries, his big role models to Wired News.»

RegNet-Registration
RegNet informed me, that they'd be releasing a new site and that the transfer should be smoothly - however due to an obvious IP address change, http://www.regnet.net currently points to some completely different site (after first only containing an error message and then being down for a while). I would expect, that the DNS server entries get updated soon and would be be glad, if people that have not been able to register since 26th/27th of July would try again in a few days.

Interview with Moss and Ewen
Daniel Robbins took an interview with Fleecy Moss and Bill McEwen (Amiga) that has been published at IBM in the section "developerWorks:Linux overview:Library - papers".

The interview starts with the Amiga Classic and brings out very positively what it really is. Next, the technology of the new system is beeing explained. Most of this should be known already.

Bill McEwens statement the SDK was sold out after 15 minutes at Neuss, is, as already said by Sebastian Brylka at Fun Time World, wrong. It was available there for a lowered price on the second day, too.

Daniel Robbins is president/CEO of Gentoo Technologies.

ANN

News from AmiWest
Teemu I. Yliselä has listened to the UGN live audio stream of Bill McEwen and basing on his notes (he did not record the stream himself) he summarized the following on ANN.

The target term for the release of the AmigaOne presently is December 2000. AmigaOne will base on Amiga's own motherboard design including not off the shelve components.

Amiga founded their own hardware department leaded by Dean Brown. This department is ought to design custom hardware for various devices, which then will be offered to third party manufacturers for production.

The SDK is selling better than expected. Amiga is in contact with a large number of big consumer electronics and software companies including every important game smithy. Many of them already purchased the SDK. After Bill McEwen's recent two TV gigs the companies' interest increased.

A SDK version for Windows will be available from next month.

From next week Read Hat will distribute the SDK. Sun started to utilize Amiga's software to present Java, too.

It is beeing planed to release beta versions of the OE.

Amiga plans to go public

Paul Nolan will take care of jobs under contract for Amiga.

Licences: No software developer will be forced to pay sums to Amiga. Instead of this there will be the possibility to take part in an unsolicited certification project. This project will offer the opportunity to put the Amiga lable on your own product, and the chance of your product beeing marketed directly by Amiga. This will cost 1,50$ US per sold unit.

Amiga will offer low cost promotion and merchandising products to the users.

At the show Amiga presented a touchscreen basing on the ARM and running with the new OE. The design came form Mick Tinker.

Back compatibility to the Classic Amiga will be carryed into effect by the OE using something which will not be an emulation.

Village Tronic Petition
Untill the end of September votes for the Village Tronic (VT) Petition can be made. This petition intends to persuade VT to place service documents at the disposal of authorized repairing companies to ensure technical support for or repair of VT products. VT still did not state concretely on the subject how to deal with the repair of their products in the future. At this time there is no repair support.

Unfortunatly Paul Qureshi only recieved about 200 votes, by now. So, who did not vote till today either can make this up at the titlelink or can send an email directly to the promoter of the petition.

T.o.T. Update Feature Disabled
Eternity at their news section:
«Unfortunatly it has happened, certain users procured themself unauthorized access to our ftp server. For this reason we were forced to disable the update feature of the Tales of Tamar Demo. We point out that more such trials endanger the release of an Amiga version of Tales of Tamar definitively. We are not keen on working for nothing for four years and we have attached a lot of money to the development. Only our alpha testers are authorized to access our ftp server. Furthermore we point out that definitively there will be no Aminet version of Tales of Tamar free to duplikate. Thus there is no reason for such trials.»

MP3 Exchange Market Napster may Stay Online for the time being
«But the abatement of the preliminary injunction does not mean winning the proceeding raised by the recording industry, at last - the current decision only keeps up the status quo untill the court has dicided on the reproach that Napster would violate the copyrights of the musicians, and the music companies knowingly and purposely. Untill early August Napster has time to comment the charge. The music industry can then answer on Napster's comments untill early September. The judgment is then expectet during September at the earliest. »

Heise: PowerPC in Reconfigurable Hardware
«Xilinx, the market leader for reconfigurable ICs by cooperation with IBM[1] obtains access to IBM's PowerPC processor design. The PowerPC processor cores shall become connected to reconfigurable FPGA circuits. Thus custom circutis can be integrated directly in the chip - without developing application specific ICs. In general FPGA enables faster development along with fewer costs than with conventional chips. Additionally FPGA basing produkts are more flexible, cause of the real circuit of the ICs can be changed easyly. Xilinx[2] is planning a possibility for updates already integrated into the chips.

Beside the processor core and the aligned CoreConnect-Bus Xilinx gains acces to the current method of copper production, by which they hope to enhance the performance of their chips. IBM with this cooperation targets more promulgation of their PowerPC processor.»

BTTR-Team by eMail

Back to the Roots News
Back to the Roots (http://www.back2roots.org), the Amiga Culture Directory project, was updated again.

The companies Vision Software and Croteam are supporting our little project now, too. Since today you can download the games "Roadkill" and "Woody's World", as well as the brilliant soccer game "5A-Side-Soccer", which is the indoor version of Football Glory.

Also the games Whale's Voyage 1+2, Black Viper, Fightin' Spirit and Spherical Worlds from Neo Software are back online, because the contract with Alive Mediasoft was never valid. Impressions, the strategy experts from the States, are supporting BTTR now for a long time and now we can give you the games "Afrika Korps", "Airbucks" and "Caesar Deluxe" for free.

Demo scene freaks will find tons of new stuff (demos, pictures, mods), too. Some of the new additions from the scene are looking so great, that we can't describe them with words. They're a must see. Especially most of the 64k intros are really fascinating as well as all the new eye-candy in the pictures section.

For all those who don't know BTTR, yet: BTTR is a legal web project which attempts to cover all areas of the Amiga (games, demos, tools, pictures, music and much more). Commercial software (games, tools, and so on) are offered for free download only with permission of the publisher.

EASys

EASys! CD Pirate Copies ?
To protect our customers from purchasing pirate copies of the EASys! CD, we have now put a Scan of the CD-ROM on this page. The EASys! CD should come as a pressed silver CD (no CD-R!) in a jewel case with 4 color cover (color cannot be smeared with a wet finger) and CD art in two colors (rasterized black/dark pink). Should your CD not match one of these criterias, it is most likely a pirate copy. Please email us in this case when and where you bought this CD!

Only dealers that got our CD through the distributor GTI should be in the possession of originals. The same is of course also true if you ordered the CD directly on our homepage or by phone from Eternity.

New Music Site on The Web
By chance - a download from Aminet - I stumbled across a rather new page for Amiga musicians. At the title link some talented composers, which are partially from the scene, offer their sounds in Protracker and Octamed format. But they don't want to just show their own stuff, but invite all interested to write, track or compose themselves. The results can then be published in a series they call "Moods - Music For Your Instincts". Perhaps this is a way to make contact with other projects looking for musicians, and vice versa!

CyberGraphX Support for Mediator PCI Graphics accelerator
Elbox Computer and Vision Factory Development announced there co-operation. The goal is to develope a CyberGraphX based Graphicaccelerator-System for PCI-Graphicaccelerators, installed on the Mediator PCI 1200 Busboard.

Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 13:50:42 +0200
From: ELBOX press@elbox.com
Organization: ELBOX COMPUTER
Subject: CyberGraphX support for Mediator PCI graphic cards

Elbox Computer www.elbox.com
Vision Factory Development www.vgr.com
------------------------------------------

For Immediate Release

Krakow, PL - 24 July 2000

Elbox Computer, the developer of Amiga hardware and software,
who have designed and produced the MEDIATOR PCI 1200 busboard,
announced a partnership today with Vision Factory Development,
developer of CyberGraphX, the widely popular graphic system
for Amiga computers.
Elbox Computer and Vision Factory Development will co-operate
to port and optimize the CyberGraphX graphic system for
operation with PCI graphic cards installed in the MEDIATOR
PCI 1200 busboard.

CyberGraphX V3 will be available with the MEDIATOR PCI busboard.
CyberGraphX V4, the extended commercial version of this system
may be obtained from all the CyberGraphX distributors; it will
enable even more comprehensive use of the PCI graphic chipsets
capacity.

Support for new graphic chipsets will be developed for
both versions (V3 and V4) of the CyberGraphX system.

Current information on drivers available for MEDIATOR will be
reported at http://www.vgr.com, the official CyberGraphX website.

CyberGraphX

The CyberGraphX standard is being supported by all major Amiga
software vendors worldwide. CyberGraphX was designed to define
an independent graphics standard for Amiga graphic boards.
Continued work on Workbench emulation was also an important
issue. Over 7 years of experience in developing graphics board
software was employed in making Workbench control screens
with all the existing Amiga graphic cards.
CyberGraphX is based on hardware-dependent monitor driver and
hardware-independent libraries. This solution has many advantages,
one of these being bug fixes in the Workbench card control.
Speed optimization is another benefit available for ALL the
graphic boards supported by the CyberGraphX system.
CyberGraphX works with majority of the most popular applications
on the Amiga and resources of Public Domain and Demo software
available are broad.

MEDIATOR PCI 1200

The MEDIATOR PCI 1200 is a new-generation busboard for Amiga
1200 computers. The MEDIATOR busboard is fitted with four
PCI 2.1-compiliant slots for connecting PCI devices, thus
enabling expansion of Amiga 1200 with a variety of PCI-standard
hardware products.
MEDIATOR's hardware has been made compatible with ALL the
available Amiga 1200 turbo cards. MEDIATOR PCI opens an immense
wealth of PCI cards for Amiga 1200 owners: network, sound,
modem (ISDN), decoding (MPEG-2, MP3), TV, and, most of all,
graphic cards based around chipsets like S3 ViRGE, Savage4,
Voodoo3, Voodoo5, Riva TNT2, etc.
MEDIATOR PCI enables using the high-end cards based around the
latest PowerPC G3/G4 processors (available in the PCI card form)
in Amiga 1200 computers. When this feature is combined with the
PCI graphic cards, totally new superb possibilities are open
for Amiga owners.

The recipients of this mail know that Wintopia2000 was a joke. We wanted to celebrate our two years of activities around Amiga News a different way :-). What kind of black humor you may say ? The design took as two days. If you overcome your shock you can read ahead...

Directory Opus 4 Support Pages

DirOpus 4.14i (Beta) re
Jacek Rzeuski released DirOpus 4.14i (Beta). This is an extract from the History:
  • removed lots (all?) pre-OS3.0 conditional code
  • removed PowerPacker support completely (replaced by XFDMaster support)
  • XFDMaster.library is opened only when needed and if it has not already been opened by another program. This prevents loading all decrunchers from libs:xfd/ directory. That feature can be overriden by setting FORCEOPENXFD tooltype in program's icon or -x (case important!) argument if started from CLI.
  • fixed canceling "DOpus already running" requester. Now it uses ARexx and requires RexxMaster running to work. "Bring to front" option added.
  • ConfigOpus: removed bug in command list (the list was too long)
  • DOpus_Icon: fixed OS3.5 icon support. NewIcons still do not work :(

New ARexx-Scripts for DOpus 4 freeware have been released.

CleanRamDisk deletes all files from RAM-Disk, except 'ClipBoards', 'ENV', 'T' and the 'Disk.info' file.

Under PatternOpus three ARexx-Scripts are assembled, that rename many files at once considering a pattern. For example, it is possible to give a pattern for a filename like "frame?.jpg" and a starting number, like "1".

MUI-Class NListtree.mcc V1.1 Released
Carsten Scholling writes:
This MUI-Class offers a simple way to display list entries in an ordered form, the socalled tree. Tree-structure is used, when files are to be displayed and managed optically separated from each other.

NListtree is interesting for developers as well as for users and easy to handle. If wanted by the programmer and usefull in the special case, this class allows the free redesigning of the displayed list by Drag'n'Drop even with multiple choice.

Now, for the first time it is possible to keep full structures when moving entries. This means, that not only the entry to be moved is inserted in the destination, but, if wanted, all the entries upto the root-list, too. This is also available when copying entries, which is implemented, too.

Features in short:
  • Simple Drag'n'Drop of entries within the the tree.
