Programming challenge: Demos without using CPU
At this year's Evoke demo party, the demo "No-CPU Challenge" by Demostue Allstars took first place in the "Alternative Platforms" category (amiga-news.de reported) and also served as an invitation to a programming challenge: the creation of demos that run entirely on Amiga custom chips without using the CPU.

The linked repository contains the challenge rules and a runner application for launching no-CPU demos. (dr)

Preview video: Emu68 V1.1 with Dumpster feature (update)
In a preview video, Michal Schulz uses the macOS 8.1 boot process to demonstrate how the Dumpster feature in the upcoming version 1.1 of Emu68 improves performance: with Dumpster disabled, the boot process took 84 seconds, but after enabling it, the boot time was reduced to 28 seconds.

And the developer explained: "Dumpster is a new way of destroying and re-using JIT instruction caches in Emu68. Instead of throwing them away right after cache flush, they are reused later if the memory of the JIT block has not changed.

The effect is visible here - macOS is constantly flushing CPU instruction cache, also the JIT cache of Emu68. With dumpster on, the boot time of macOS decreases drastically. The effect is even more pronounced on macOS 7.5.

This is a Work-In-Progress - there are still few things to do before it is going public."

Update: (29.08.2025, 20:11, dr)

The developer has now published the first part of a three-part series of articles in which he provides an overview of the upcoming version 1.1 of Emu68. The first part deals with changes to the JIT scheduler and hash tables. (dr)

Turn-based strategy: August 2025 update for "Settle the World"
Christian 'TheoTheoderich' Wiegels' latest update for his turn-based building and trading game "Settle the World" offers a whole range of bug fixes, minor changes and adjustments that improve the gaming experience, as well as ambient sounds.

For example, the micromanagement required to supply the population has been reduced. And the native tribes now react much more strongly to the presence of human actors, which can lead to conflicts with them more quickly.

In addition, nature and sound effects are now played depending on the terrain fields that the player sees on the map. This requires a fast hard drive, as two sound channels need to be constantly fed with new sounds. There are three sound effects for almost every terrain field on the map. The sounds are played slightly quieter than the normal sounds, but you can change the volume using the + and - keys on the numeric keypad.

Last but not least, the developer has created a German-language Let's-Play video to make the game more accessible to users. (dr)

TINAPAMA: Updating programs made easy
The new program from AmiModRadio programmer 'Tygre', TINAPAMA, "is not a package manager", as the acronym hints already, but it makes it easier to keep your software up to date as well. This can be done for individual programs or entire groups using a simple CLI command and, if you have multiple Amigas, it can also be triggered centrally.

A description file in each directory, for example the file "AmiModRadio.tinapama" at the installation location of this music player, specifies exactly what should be done and where the respective updates can be found on the internet. If newer files than those already installed exist when the program is called, the update is performed. There are already predefined Tinapama description files for a whole range of programs; otherwise, you can create them yourself using the parameters listed at the title link. (snx)
