AmigaOS 4: Web browser NetSurf 3.11
After around three and a half years various test builds an update of the NetSurf browser to version 3.11 was published today, together with a version for AmigaOS 4, provided by Chris Young under the title link. NetSurf 3.11 features improved page layout with CSS flex support. It also features many other optimisations and enhancements. Changes of the Amiga port:
- Added page theme option.
- Improved bitmap handling.
- Improved and optimised Unicode handling.
- Stability improvements.
After initial tests on our part, the support for encrypted pages that had been lost in test builds is working again. Unfortunately, access to downloads from GitHub pages ("Assets") still does not work.
Officially, no conversion for AmigaOS 3 has (yet) been published, but the last test build from 28 December 2023, NetSurf-gcc-6637.lha (4,3 MB), should basically correspond to version 3.11.

8/16-bit emulator for Mac OS and Linux: Clock Signal V2023-12-26
Thomas Harte's Clock Signal is an emulator for various 8- and 16-bit platforms aiming to be invisible to the user. The idea is to simply start the source medium without configuring the emulator oneself. Clock Signal is available for Mac OS and Unix-compatible systems. While there is also an Amiga emulation included, it "remains wilfully inaccurate" for now. Changes:
- improves support for Apple II NIB images;
- thanks to @ryandesign corrects Apple II/II+/IIe floating bus issues;
- resolves a potential crash-at-startup for the Enterprise;
- resolves potential stuck-on drive motors on the Amiga;
- resolves some disk writing issues specific to the Enhanced Apple IIe;
- thanks again to @ryandesign also corrects an internal optimisation around Disk II write protection sensing, and an error to do with data bus loading
- adds emulation of the most basic form of IBM PC — an 8086 compatible with MDA or CGA graphics and a floppy drive.

Emulator: QEMU 8.2.0 released
QEMU is an open source computer emulator and virtualiser. QEMU is able to emulate a complete computer in software. It is therefore also possible to emulate Amiga operating systems such as AROS, AmigaOS or MorphOS on QEMU. This support is provided by QEMU developer Zoltan Balaton, who has set up a dedicated website with lots of tips and information. As already reported at the beginning of December, the now released QEMU version 8.2.0 also supports AmigaOne emulation via its BBoot bootloader. In addition, the Pegasos 2 emulation now supports the audiodev property (PowerPC changes). For Windows 64 Bit a compiled binary was made available on Christmas Eve.

Preview video: Hyperborea Resurrected
Daniel 'Daytona675x' Müßener is in the process of continuing a project that was started four years ago and interrupted in the meantime (YouTube videos): back then, he began developing a new shoot 'em up called "Hyperborea" with graphic designer Torben Bakager Larsen, who was also responsible for Battle Squadron, among other things.
Everything from the original prototype code was discarded, started from scratch and only some auxiliary functions from Souverän Soccer were adopted. Technically, the game is as good as finished and has the following features:
- 304 x 256 PAL @ 50 fps (almost always ;) )
- vertical scroller with additional horizontal scrolling (384 pixel wide levels)
- 1p and 2p simultan mode
- 100% flicker free bullets and enemies
- tons of bullets
TTorben Bakager Larsen is back on board, the strict colour restrictions of the old version have been removed. The game is mostly developed in C++ and about 10% in ASM. The video shows the current test level with some enemies and many, many bullets on an A1200 with deactivated turbo card / FastRam.

Merry Christmas!
Dear readers, dear Amiga friends,
As Christmas draws to a close, so does the year and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal readers, for whom we have endeavoured over the past twelve months not only to collect news, but also to provide background reports, tutorials, anecdotes and so on. It is fascinating how many private, but also professional projects still exist around the Amiga.
Therefore, on the other hand, thanks should also go to all the people who develop these small and large software and hardware projects and sacrifice time for them: without them there would be nothing for us to report on and nothing for the many Amiga users to be happy about, test, complain about... ;)
For this reason, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year together with a few randomly selected people who represent all the projects we have reported on over the past year! Stay in touch with the developers, the creatives, support them, also by actively participating in discussions in the corresponding news items here: Feedback is always welcome! A big thank you to the graphic designer 'jojo073', who provided us with the Christmas pixel art.
Merry Christmas!
