Archiving data cassettes: UberCassette 0.02
Ian Gledhill's UberCasette converts recordings from old data cassettes to formats which are supported by several emulators and tools. The cassette has to be digitalised into a WAV-file and UberCasette converts it to TAP/T64- (C64, C16, VIC20) or UEF- (Acorn BBC/Electron) files.

The author has published UberCasette-binaries for AmigaOS 3/4, MorphOS, AROS and Windows. He asks for your feedback because the program is still in an early stage. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOne X1000: Linux kernel, white tower cases
Press release:
Penguins anyone?

As part of the pre-qualification process Varisys have created a minimal PowerPC Linux kernel to ensure that all components and subsystems are working as expected on the revision 2 Nemo motherboard. Understandably, Linux driver support is far more extensive and by creating a minimal Linux system Varisys can demonstrate that the board they deliver to the AmigaOS4 developers it fit for purpose.

As an extension of this testing process we have commissioned Varisys to create a desktop Linux port complete with GUI. Although we realize that many Amigans will exclusively run AmigaOS4 we thought that giving the AmigaOne X1000 a working Linux option would add extra value and allow users to run software and utilities that may not be currently available under AmigaOS4.

"It don't matter if you're black or white"

We have been working very closely with AmigaKit to produce "AmigaOne X1000" and "Boing Ball" branded peripherals and merchandise to compliment the excellent A1-X1000 tower case design created by Andrew Korn. In July 2010, AmigaKit began selling a matching black A1-X1000 PS/2 & USB compatible "Boing Ball" keyboard and mouse. These peripherals can be used with the SAM range as well as PC or Mac computers and are also compatible with Classic Amigas by using Cocolino, Micromys, Subway USB or Deneb USB devices.

The original A1-X1000 design was based around a black tower case but, after receiving many requests from customers, we decided to also produce a white version with matching keyboard and mouse combination. AmigaKit began stocking the white mouse at the end of 2010 and hope to be in a position to offer customers and Amiga resellers a choice of the black or white "Boing Ball" tower case in the near future.

Cloanto owns trade marks "Workbench" and "Amiga Forever"
In February 2006 Cloanto applied for the trade marks "Amiga Forever" and four months later for the "Workbench" as well.

In February 2007 and March 2008 Amiga Inc. entered a caveat against the registrations of the trade marks.

On 27th February both opponents applied for closing the proceedings: Amiga canceled its caveat against the two trade marks of Cloanto. And Cloanto will not contest Amiga's trade mark "Amiga". Thus Cloanto owns the two US trade marks "Amiga Forever" and "Workbench".

Commodore USA which had announced an Amiga computer with a operating systems called Workbench keeps acting cool: The "Chief Technology Officer" emphasized that Commodore USA is relieved because the name "Workbench" had raised too much expectations at Amiga users. (cg) (Translation: dr)

IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers (Update)
When a certain Todd Kleperis contacted the Aminet team two days ago to "discuss your library of Amiga titles" and ask for "guidance as to how to work with the existing fan base", the initial reaction over at Aminet was confusion. According to Kleperis, his company IContain is operating from China and about to revive the Amiga line of electronics. Why he choose to use Aminet as his first contact with the actual Amiga scene was not explained though.

At icontainprotects.com, Kleperis' company is indeed advertising cell phones, tablet PCs, various types of TV screens aswell as all-in-one PCs with integrated monitors - all of them sporting prominent Amiga logos. Obviously these devices are third-party products which have been rebranded as Amiga products by IContain.

You can't actually buy these products from IContain though: The company is mainly operating in the socalled Rent-to-own business. Using devices developed by IContain, furniture or consumer electronics devices leased to end users by Rent-to-own providers can be tracked or even remotely disabled should the customer stop paying its fees in time.

Asked about the reason for introducing a line of Amiga products, Kleperis told us that he was approached by a Rent-to-own provider that intended to buy not only the tracking technology from his company but also the actual consumer electronics - provided IContain could offer a "branded solution". As Amiga "used to be all about innovation in the past" (Kleperis) and other businesses like Lenovo or Sony were not interested in cooperation, Kleperis decided to offer Amiga branded devices.

We were told that the licensing deal was "cut just recently by the executor of an estate", that product just started shipping and that we should expect "worldwide press" soon. The IContain president would neither give any further information nor comment our hints that another company has already announced various Amiga products.

Interestingly, while Leo Nigro, Chief Technology Officer of Commodore USA, states in public that his company obtained a license from Bill McEwen and is free "to do with [the Amiga brand] as we please" - Kleperis mentions the executor of an estate as his business partner. The estate in question would likely be that of former Amiga Inc. investor Pentti Kouri, who deceased in 2009.

Update: (24.02.2011, 22:30, cg)

In contrast to our initial assumption, Bill McEwen is apparently involved with this licensing deal. IContain's official press release has been posted by now, which quotes McEwen: "Amiga has continued to work on bringing new products with new partners, and we are pleased to be working with IContain providing new hardware and software solutions that will benefit everyone." (cg) (Translation: cg)
