Dealer: point.design closed
Not long ago we could proudly deliver the first AmigaOS 4.0 version to our AmigaOne customers. We are very delighted about this.

Nevertheless point.design in Austria has been closed because of personal reasons. I will move to Phoenix, AZ, in the USA because of a job offer. The desicion has been not easy for me but I had to use this chance. This unfortunately means the end for point.design and for OASE, too.

It has been a very exciting time. We succeeded in building up something in a market which to many users was alreday dead. We helped to organize the "AmigaOS 4 on Tour", have organized a show event in Austria called OASE and have tried to offer products and support for Amiga users.

So I am really delighted that we finally succeeded in publishing the AmigaOS-pre-CD. I am still looking forward to new Amiga products.

I want to thank you all customers and all who helped us. It made lot of fun to work with you.

YOUR
Jürgen & Silke Schober

PS: Maybe I will make it to see Sacramento in July. ;) (snx) (Translation: dr)

Golem: Why Don't We Rebel Against Copyright Law - Interview with L. Lessig

"Why don't we rebel against copyright?" is the question, in relation to which Golem.de has conducted an interview with professor of jurisprudence Lawrence Lessig, who's a decisive critic of the present copyright regulations and a member of the board of the Free Software Foundation.

In the discussion with Golem.de he talks about his vision of the culture of the 21st century, criticizes copyrights - which belong to companies, who hold onto them while the actual author dies sooner or later, and speaks in favor of necessity to have P2P exchange methods. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Update of the New Edition of the Turbo-Card Apollo 630
Matthias Bertram wrote to provide an update of the new edition of the Amiga 600 turbo-card Apollo 630 (68030@40 MHz, SIMM socket for up to 32 MB RAM, connection for 68882 FPU) through Individual Computers (amiga-news.de reported):

"There's news again on the Apollo front: I've already found 70 purchasers for the new Apollo!

About 25 other interested people have not yet decided. Should 100 units be ordered, the price will be 100 euros instead of the 130 euro price listed until now.

Jens Schönfeld has a couple ideas concerning the CPU and the attachment of the turbo-card. But he says he doesn't want to reveal more right now." (snx) (Translation: dm)

Chess Game: HellChess Released (Update)
HellChess marks the appearance of a new chess game that is free in the Amiga version, and also of all things payment-required for the Linux, Windows, GameBoy Advanced, Palm and PocketPC versions in development (screenshots).

An excerpt of the features of the program (9 MB):
  • Capable AI for the single player mode
  • many exercise instructions
  • many configuration options
  • online play possibility through Direct Connect or the HellHound master server
A PPC/RTG Amiga version is still in development.

Update: (26th June 2004, 17:52, snx)
As the author commented, the next-released version of the game has problems with AGA/ECS, therefore the archive from yesterday has been replaced with an update. To that end there's an 8-bit version of the contained animations being worked on for systems without graphics cards. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Version 1.5 of the FlashROM software Luciferin for Algor / ROMulus
Dear E3B customers, E3B and Chris Hodges are proud to announce the availability of a new version of the Luciferin FlashROM software for the Algor and Highway/ROMulus expansion cards. It is a free update provided as service to all registered Algor/ROMulus users.

Although the last update is nearly a one year old, nearly all of the reports were positive and only a few requests have been made. The software was indeed ahead of its time. However, developers of other FlashROM solutions have planned some new features, which were missing in the old version of Luciferin. As usually, Algor and ROMulus users are the first to get these features working in their machines, preserving that the Algor/ROMulus continues to be to the best FlashROM solution on the market.

An absolutely new feature is the ability to now install a (possibly custom) Kickstart ROM image inside the FlashROM. It then can be enabled instantly at the first boot with the newly included AlgorKick module. AlgorKick uses the MapROM option of the various phase5 CPU cards, most of the users have in their machines. The 512KB Kickstart image easily fits into the FlashROM using compression, taking less than 300KB inside the FlashROM. There is still plenty room for lots of other modules! No need for BlizKick anymore!

The following boards are supported by AlgorKick:
  • Blizzard 1230-I/II/III/IV, 1230-T/ERC, 1260, 2040-ERC, 2060, and PPC
  • Cyberstorm MKI/MKII/MKIII and PPC
  • (Commodore A3640 / Blizzard A4030 -- please ask)
Also, a new tool "HatchSentinel" has been included to generate a password protection to the machine. Once installed in the FlashROM, it will present a password screen instantly after turning the machine on. The Sentinel module comes with various options, such as starting itself in the background, so that the booting process is not delayed.

The Bootloader has been improved to correctly determine the Kickstart version number with the BoingBag2 exec.library update. This was only cosmetic, but was added on user demand. The loader now also comes in a new "permanent" version, that will add ROMTags only once, making it even faster than before.

Several other new ROMTags have been added to the archive, such as modules to disabled the IDE controller to avoid unnecessary waiting (if you don't have any IDE devices connected). Or removing the bootmenu for secure and even faster booting. Or SpeedRamsey, a contribution by Christian Sauer.

Luciferin, the user friendly graphical tool for handling the FlashROM contents has become even better and will now warn you, if you try to include a program that shouldn't be installed into the FlashROM.

This is the list of most improvements. The update will be emailed free of charge to registered users the next days. Users of the Highway should be reminded that they still have the offer to update their card with a ROMulus module, check out the IOSpirit website for details.

E3B and Chris Hodges hope that you will enjoy this update. (snx)

Web browser: AWeb 3.5 APL Lite Beta released
The AWeb open Source Project released a first beta version of 'AWeb 3.5 APL Lite' today.

An overview of the most important changes since AWeb 3.5 (complete ChangeLog):
  • HTML: Support for <INS> and <DEL> tags
  • Rendering: Double Buffered Rendering - Optional double buffering dramatically reduces the flickering during rendering of long table based pages.
  • Background Images no longer force a complete redraw off the document, resulting in a dramatic speed up of some pages.
  • Layout: Fixes and standardisation to the way tables are laid out, and to the way background images in tables are align mean that many more pages render "correctly".
  • Internal image decoder: Fix to the transparency bug in the internal gif decoder.
  • Gopher Support: Improved gopher support.
  • Character sets: Support for translating character sets enables pages using a different character set to be displayed.
  • Splash screen: New more attractive startup screen and about requester.
  • AWebplugins: Fixes to a major bug in the image decoder plugins where AWeb would crash with bad memory trashing on repeated iconificataion.
  • AWeblibs: The aweblib version numbering has been changed, all version start from 35 as of this release. This avoids some clashes that would other wise occur with previous version of AWeb. 'awebjs.aweblib' has been renamed 'javascript.aweblib' for the same reason.
  • Javascript: Fundamental support for Regular Expression objects has been introduced in this version. However, the string methods using regular expressions have not yet been implemented and as most real world sites uses these methods few new sites will work, rather this is the first step on the journey.
  • Developer compile: A compile of the developer version of AWeb (AWeb.developer) is included in the archive. It is not installed by the Install script. It allows developers and beta testers to generate extended debug info and should only be used for this purpose. It contains no extra browsing functionality.

File sharing: ctorrent for AmigaOS and MorphOS (Update)
ctorrent is a console based client for the BitTorrent file sharing network.

The Amiga version has been compiled on a 68040/40. On that system, file hash checking (neccessary when resuming a download) on a 44 MB file takes about 1.5 minutes. During normal operation the CPU usage is below 50 % though.

ctorrent does not allow limiting the uploads.

Direct download: ctorrent-1.3.2.lha (186 KB)

Update: (12:29, 20.06.04, snx)
Meanwhile, #amigazeux has also prepared a MorphOS version (71 KB). Like the AmigaOS version, this port just offers a common bandwith limitation for up- and downloads. (cg)
