Opening of the CeBIT 2003
Today, Wednesday the 12th of March 2003, the CeBIT opened its doors. The world's largest IT fair in Hannover will last until March the 19th 2003.
While there is a loss of exhibitors and exhibition space experts guess there will be, facing the stressed situation of the German economy, a decrease of visitors also.
But at least the IT trade keeps slightly optimistic. This year UMTS, the tablet PC and once more the competition between Windows and Linux will be in the focus.
Among the others there is Genesi, developer and distributor of the Pegasos, attending the show. AMIGA Inc. have canceled their attendence just some days before the start of the fair.
Reports of the CeBIT 2003 will be to read at
amiga-news.de and AMIGAplus soon.

Translator wanted (Englisch - German)
Andreas Falkenhahn writes:
I am looking for someone who might translate the manual of Hollywood to German.
It should have been finished some time ago but due to some unfortunate circumstances including the loss of data of a nearly finished German manual we are now just back to the start again.
If there might be someone who would do this job the one will receive an extensive
Airsoft Softwair bundle incl. Hollywood full version. I will emphasize here that the translation really will be a big job. It is about a good 250 kilobytes of plain text which has to be translated. Something like this will surely take more than just two evenings. Interested ones might contact me to check the details.

Eyetech: AmigaOne-XE status update
Alan Redhouse (Eyetech) comments on the recent delays with the delivery of the AmigaOne-XE motherboards at the AmigaOne mailing list (title link). A brief summary of the most important topics:
The delivery of the motherboard is delayed because some testers reported smaller problems with the new hardware and UBoot. The new UBoot revision is finished now (see Hyperion
press release from Monday) and the production of the boards can be started now.
Eyetech guesses that they will receive the motherboards next week and they aim to start the delivery the week later.
Suse ran out of PPC Linux sets so the last XEs will be delivered with Debian.
Because there seem to be a great demand of a high end CPU module Eyetech will offer later this year a module with a faster G4 processor.
Actually the 7445 with 1.3 GHz is favoured but this might be changed due to the availability of different CPU types.
Finally Redhouse comments on the relationship between MAI, Eyetech and Terra Soft extensively.
Update: (26.07.2014, cg)
A complete copy of Alan Redhouse's mail (added since the Original has been moved elsewhere by Yahoogroups apparently):

Betreff: Re: [amigaone] Re: latest AmigaOne delay
When I wrote to this list on 13 February I said I expected - if everything
went to plan - that if the A1-XE boards shipped to developers in early
February worked well we would order and receive the end user earlybird
systems by the end of February. But I did add :-
"These are of course target dates, and cannot possibly be taken as a promise
or guarantee. All I can say is that we are as keen to have your money as you
are to spend it, and do not, and never have had any intention of
deliberately holding back shipments just to be awkward (as some people seem
to think). However we will not as of policy ship any product before we are
satisfied that it is fully functional - including an installable and
working operating system - other than to developers for testing purposes."
Well in the event the developers did find a few problems with the newly
available hardware/firmware combination, and as a result UBoot had some
further updates - as posted this week by Hyperion - including board
diagnostics and better RAM support. In addition SuSE ran out of boxed PPC
Linux sets, so we have decided to ship Debian Linux with the Earlybird
systems instead. The developers, and particulrly Ross Vumbaca, have done
sterling work in putting together an end-user installation guide. Thanks
again guys.
The upshot is that the earlybird and remaining A1-XE/G4 and G3 boads are now
ready for final BIOS programming and shipping to us. We expect to receive
them next week and start shipping them out the following week.
Many people have also asked us to produce a high end cpu module for the
A1-XE and I am pleased to announce that we will be commissioning a high-end
G4 module for delivery later in the year. The current favourite is the
7445@1.3GHz - but we will of course monitor the available cpu options to
make sure that we can offer the best price/performance to upgraders. These
top-end cpu's are currently *very* expensive so will only appeal to users
who must have the fastest for business (or ego) reasons.
Finally we have received several emails about Terrasofts 'will we/won't we'
attitude to the Teron boards and our opinion as to what, if any, is the
conspiracy theory behind their (non) announcements.
First of all it is necessary to put right some of the popular misconceptions
that have been relentlessly been put about by certain individuals on ann and
elsewhere.
MAI - as has been said many times - are a fabless chip manufacturer who also
own the Teron design. They do not make boards. In the past MAI have
commissioned the building of boards in sample quantity boards from a third
party prototyping company (a sort of far eastern DCE on their good days) and
we have bought some of these boards from MAI to ship to developers. But for
any sort of producton volumes we have to contract directly with an
independant board manufacturer and clearly this involves a significant
volume and therefore upfront financial commitment.
This means that neither Terrasoft nor us are 'just a distributor' of MAI
boards. To have anything other than sample boards produced to the basic
Teron design, those boards have to be individually ordered, in very
significant quantities, by us, Terrasoft or whoever. If Terrasoft want
boards from our production they have to apply to us to be a dealer. If not
they have to stump up a rather large amount of money of their own to build
their own production. MAI of course get a royalty for their board design for
all boards manufactured. For the record we have placed by far the largest
order for boards based on the Teron design of anybody, including MAI (and of
course Terrasoft).
This PPC motherboard market is of course a new market for Terrasoft who,
despite the best wishes of those who would do anything to see genuine Amiga
supporting companies such as us and Hyperion fail, are really a very small
company that have historcally made their money selling Linux books and
merchandise, and providing paid some YDL support to companies. My guess is
that it is their uncertainties in this new (to them) board market coupled
with
the required volume/financial commitment which is now causing them to
reconsider their options. In fact Terrasoft have not even contributed to
porting YDL to the Teron board - this has been done by Bill Mueller of MAI
and others on the A1 dev list..They clearly also completely messed up their
TeronPx/G4 pricing calculations - hence the quick withrawal from their web
site.
Contrary to what has also been speculated, there is certainly no requirement
for us or end users to pay a licence fee to Terrasoft for any AmigaOne board
whether used for running OS4 or Linux.
I'm sure the ann orcs will try to make something sinister of all this, but
we, and Hyperion, really are doing our best under very difficult
circumstances to deliver the best, most cost effective, genuine, Amiga to
date.
Thankyou for your continued support
Alan

AmigaWorld: Ten questions per week at Fleecy Moss
"We at AmigaWorld are proud to announce that Amiga's Chief Technology
Officer Fleecy Moss has agreed on offering us weekly Questions and
Answers sessions." (Update, 17.03.2012, cg: integrated the actual interview into the news item, since the original document is no longer available on the net):
1) Rebel: "Why SO silent? AInc has been quiet for months at a time, giving the naysayers, and rumour mongers a chance to do more damage, and divide the community even more.".
Fleecy: As my mother used to, and still does say to me 'Don't say anything unless you have something to say.' Keith Blakemore Noble pointed out on ANN that this is what we said we would do when we bought the company in 2000 and then we went back on this pledge. The problem we have, although it is a good problem is that the Amiga has a community and the community wants to know what is going on, more so given the nightmare of the last eight years.
Our initial policy was thus to say nothing until we had news to share. With all the requests we then got for news, it became very difficult for us to keep to our policy. We thus resurrected the Executive Updates but in these we made the mistake of sharing status and progress information and as anyone in business knows, business is a distillation process - 100 leads may lead to 20 contacts which lead to 5 contracts which may, if you are lucky lead to 1 deal.
Even more unfortunate, the deals we were able to announce, the Sharp Zaurus, the Nokia MediaTerminal, the Sendo Z100 were pulled out from under us - the Zaurus for Sharp internal reasons, the MediaTerminal because of the collapse of ITV digital and another Germany company and the Sendo situation is well understood (although there is still hope there of a new deal based upon the unique advantages of the AmigaDE).
So, in terms of news items we haven't done too well.
To add to this (and many will shout and scream about this but it is true), Amiga Inc has been under attack from several groups who have other axes to grind, whether they want an x86 solution, AmigaOS open sourced, protection code and licencing removed from AmigaOS4.0 or want to encourage people to move to another platform whilst claiming it is an Amiga. Of course in a community there is disagreement but in a community that disagreement is either tolerated or the community splits apart. Everything we were saying in public was being taken apart and turned to support whatever was the position of the poster.
In the end, we decided to revert back to our original policy since it became apparent that all anyone really cared about was the release of AmigaOS4.0. This then brought us full circle to the original situation, that when saying nothing, noisemakers will rush to fill the silence. If you don't counteract the rumours then its because they are true and if you do pop up to counteract them then that must be because they are true. The only way to win is to get AmigaOS4.0 out the door and so that is what we are concentrating on at the moment.
Part of the reason for this Q&A; service is to rubbish the claim that we won't talk to the community. We just won't say anything if it isn't 110% guaranteed anymore and that is the way people seem to want it.
2) SlimJim: "It is well known that this first release of AOS4 is mainly aimed for the existing user-base and eventual old Amigans. What is Amiga Inc's (overall) marketing strategy with respect to AmigaOS4 + Aone (once they become available)?".
Fleecy:
- Move the community to new hardware and operating system.
- Develop audio and 2d/3d productivity architectures with Amiga and non Amiga developers
- Create applications to take advantage of these architectures to carve out solution markets
- Support development of applications that round the appeal of the platform - browser, email client, word processor
- Integrate with the AmigaDE to open access to multiple platform markets, both open and solution based
- As we build the application base to where it can successfully provide for different roles, we will then push it out into those markets.
In short, there is no point in pushing the Amiga into a market where it is not yet ready to provide an adequate solution or it will die before it takes its first step. To do that we need the hardware, the operating system, the application base and the support services in place.
3) Herewegoagain: "Will they [Amiga Inc.] be negotiating with Microsoft to bring Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Media Player to OS4?".
Fleecy: It is something we have considered but again, as with all the other application developers out there on other platforms, until we can plonk a machine and operating system in front of them, there is little point. The perennial problem, of course is that these companies are busy with their main activities and seeing their product ported to another platform, particularly one as small as the Amiga is not something that they wish to consider. In the end, they will only 'get out of bed' if there is a large market or we provide them with financial incentive.
4) alx: "Assuming everything goes to plan, at what point in the future will Amiga start to advertise the A1/OS (not just to Amigans)?".
Fleecy: I refer you back to question 2 - we will market and advertise when the full solution is ready for those markets. This doesn't mean that there won't be penetration. We have many journalists ready to review and write about the machines. Amiga is a big story to them because the Amiga was such a large part of people's lives in the past. We will have services in place to take advantage of and capture that interest, to make use of it when the conditions are right.
5) reflect: "Maybe I've missed this when I read the featurelist, but I couldn't see ARexx there. Will ARexx still be included, and if so, will it have gotten an overhaul internally or will it 'just' be ported or will it be emulated?"
Fleecy: The ownership issues surround the original ARexx implementation are well known and we have been unable to gain access to the source. The existing 68k ARexx binary will thus be emulated. We are reviewing the entire scripting and application control for both AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 as mentioned later on.
6) unclecurio: "What are AInc doing to attract past developers to produce updated versions of their software? For example, Photogenics has ceased development for AmigaOS but would be a great product to bring back in an updated version.".
Fleecy: We are working in the background but I don't want to go into too much detail as it has become apparent that competitors are approaching the same people and trying to tie them into exclusive deals that would keep their products from AmigaOS4.0. Providing them with a list of who we are approaching, both within the Amiga community and on other platforms would really be doing their work for them. Suffice it to say that we are being as open as we can with all the developers that we have been able to locate still developing for the AmigaOS and with one or two exceptions, they are very receptive to what we have been able to tell them.
7) Eric_Z: "Is A.inc. currently involved in porting over office apps to AACE or OS4?".
Fleecy: For Amiga Anywhere, we are encouraging development of the applications that our customers are telling us they want, and this is almost always games. However, we do have customers who have requested education and productivity software and we have one of the best calculators ever created on a software platform and a digital picture application that is impressing lots of people. In the end, we encourage and work on whatever is being asked for.
8) mood: "Will there be any Amiga-Anywhere/AmigaDE-player for AmigaOS 4.x?".
Fleecy: We have already stated that we are targeting an AACE player for AmigaOS4.2
9) DaveW: "Is SHEEP the scripting language that looked rather cool available or going to be available this year for Amiga based programmers to get their hands on?".
Fleecy: We are currently reviewing SHEEP in the context of the AmigaDE and AmigaOS4 and looking at how it can be used to bring the two together as both are moved forwards and towards each other.
10) Pig: "Where do you see the company in 5 years, and where do you see AmigaOS at that time?".
Fleecy: I hope that we are on many different types of device and providing a seamless digital enviroment for users irrespective of their hardware. We have a marketing slogan we use, the new WWW, which means Whatever, Wherever, Whenever.

Terra Soft: Teron-PPC-Board not longer available in the Online-Store
Terra Soft ATX PowerPC Systems
Terra Soft Current and Pending Customers,
"Many of you have enthusiastically and patiently awaited the delivery of MAI Logic's Teron motherboards on which Terra Soft's Boxer ATX systems will be built. We have removed the Teron-based systems from our online Store until further notice in order to reduce further confusion and false expectations. We promise to bring this product to market as soon as possible." -- Terra Soft Team
Background could be a diversity of opinion between Terra Soft and Mai
Logic. According to rumors, which Mike Bouma in the Amiga World forum
drew "from reliable sources", Terra Soft demands 20 US dollar per
produced and sold Main board, including the AmigaOne boards, since
these boards can implement Yellow Dog Linux. These rumors were so far
not confirmed officially.
