MPEG: SMPEG V0.4.4 - MPEG-1 player library for SDL
An Amiga version of the MPEG-1 player library 'SMPEG' with sound support has been released, including a simple player program.

Video playback is based on the Berkeley MPEG player 'mpeg_play v2.2'. Sound output is by way of a slightly modified version of the 'mpegsound-Library' of Splay V0.8.2.

SMPEG thus supports MPEG audio (MP3), MPEG-1 video and MPEG system streams.

The library is subject to the GNU Library Public License (LGPL) Version 2 and has been compiled with -m68020-60.

With 'plaympeg', a simple video player for testing the library is included (also required is the SDL library: CGX, AHI, etc.).

The C library interfaces are 'documented' in the file 'smpeg.h' and the MPEG*.h files.

Geek Gadgets: Status after breakdown on 10th October 2002
On 10th October 2002, the Geek Gadgets project's hardware (gcc, ixemul.library...) broke down. This affected the power supply as well as two hard disks, one with the current system backup and another with the complete system backup (about a year old).

Currently, only the mailing lists are active. Due to the low activities in the lists, these have been reduced to 'gg-announce' and 'gg'.

The 'gg' list currently has a discussion about the status and the future of Geek Gadgets. (sd) (Translation: cb)

Amiga Flame

Amiga Flame: 6th anniversary, Go For Goal, Space-Flight simulation
The Amiga online games magazine 'Amiga Flame' celebrates its 6th anniversary, reports about an ice hockey game for AmigaDE with 'Go For Goal', and about a Spaceflight simulation which is in the first development stage.

On 12th October 1996, Philip Cosby went online with Amiga Flame, so the online magazine is celebrating its 6th anniversary. Philip Cosby is glancing back to this origin in an article, describes the current situation and the reason why he started Amiga Flame: "It was as though Amiga users were in a dark room and could see no future, only darkness. I had to light up that room and show them that there are many amazing and exciting games in development."

With Go For Goal, an ice hockey game for AmigaDE is in development. It is inspired by the C-64 game 'Hattrick'. In 'Go For Goal' you control one field player and the goal keeper - the computer acts as opponent.

This game is being developed a.o. by Gabriel Hauber, who is also involved in the Java AmigaDE classes 'Jami'.

The target platform is currently PDAs with a resolution of 240x320 pixels. At a later stage, this will be customizable, so screen sizes from mobile phones up to desktop computers will be supported.

For more information about the game you can mail Gabriel Hauber (gabrielh@gabrielhauber.com).

Amiga Flame has found out, that a new developer team is planning to develop a spaceflight simulation. According to team member Johan Dams, the game will be along the lines of Elite/Frontier. One of the ideas is that the game should be playable over the Internet.

The developers are aware of this project's scope and are looking for talented gfx artists and programmers to push the project forward. Interested people should mail Johan Dams (amiga@sin.khk.be). (sd) (Translation: cb)

Chess: AmiChess and Crafty
Achim Stegemann writes:
"Although having been announced as soon as the beginning of October, the two new chess programs AmiChess and Crafty have finally found their way into the Aminet.

AmiChess is a GNUChess 5.0.4 based program with a GUI making use of MUI.

Alas, some users have already told me that AmiChess doesn't run on their Amiga. I don't know the reason for this, as it works without problems on my computers (Amiga, Amithlon and UAE). In this case I am asking all users with this problem to mail me their Amiga configuration and a SnoopDOS log file.

The second program, Crafty, is an Amiga port of the very strong program by Bob Hyatt. The most current version 18.15 has been ported. Crafty can only be played under ixemul in pure text mode in a shell. In return it has proven itself to be a very strong opponent!

The binaries of both programs have been compiled towards a 68020/68881 combination and thus should run on this or better CPU configurations. Due to the source code's particularities, a PPC port is currently impossible. However, fast x86 emulators like UAE, AmigaXL or Amithlon are an adequate substitute.

Further information can be found on my home page."

AmiChess runs from AmigaOS 3.5/3.9, MUI 3.8 and CPU 68020 with FPU 68881.

Crafty requires the ixemul.library V48+ and runs from CPU 68020 with FPU 68881.

individual Computers: Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper and PCI POST code display
Two new products are listed on individual Computers' Web site. These are 'Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper' and 'PCI POST code display' respectively. There are exact delivery dates for both products. More information can be found under the title link.

Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper is on one side a PCI board for PCs, Macs, AmigaOne and Pegasos, and the other side (thus 'Flipper') can be stuck into the Zorro Bus of a classical Amiga. In addition, this board contains a connector for the A1200's clock port.

Beside the traditional Catweasel functions, support for diverse floppy disk formats (C64 floppy, Amiga etc.), three new functions have been added:
  • Support for digital Joysticks (VIC 20, C-64, Amiga)
  • Mini-DIN connector for an Amiga 4000 keyboard. Whoever wants to use an A2000 or A3000 keyboard can do so using a PS/2 adaptor which can be bought in well-stocked PC shops.
  • Additionally the board offers the possibility of inserting the C-64's original Soundchip (SID). According to the manufacturer, greatest care was taken to make sure that the chip really sounds exactly like in the original computer.
PCI POST-Code display (Port 80 Display) is a diagnostics board for all computers with PCI slots.

The PC BIOS has a built-in diagnostics help, which writes each step of the self diagnosis, the so-called Power-On Selftest (short: POST), to the PCI bus. On a two-digit display, the POST-Code Display shows the Hex code, which then can be translated into plain language with the help of a table from the BIOS' manufacturer.

As many errors are caused by the power supply, five LEDs additionally show the state of all voltages on the PCI bus.

Further information about the products can be obtained through the title link. (sd) (Translation: cb)
