Graphics card: Firmware and driver update for ZZ9000
For his graphics card ZZ9000 (amiga-news.de reported) Lukas F. Hartmann has released updates of the firmware and the driver. Version 1.6.2 among others offers improved stability and performance.

Changes:
  • Higher stability, esp. with 68060/CyberStorm. Better output signal. 1.5.1 for Zorro 3 had faulty FPGA timing. We finally figured out this was a Xilinx Vivado bug
  • Improved raw read/write speed
  • Improved speed on some P96 drawing functions, especially RectFill() Pattern
  • Fixes to network driver incl. the possibility to switch to INT2 instead of INT6 in the case you have hardware conflicts. To do this, set the interrupt jumper on ZZ9000 to INT2 and create an empty file ENVARC:ZZ9K_INT2
  • Unified scandoubler (“videocap”) code for Denise and Videoslot sampling with slightly better centering

Crowdfunding: A book from David Pleasance and Trevor Dickinson
After Commodore - The Inside Story, the former "managing director" of Commodore UK, David Pleasance, is working on a second book, this time in co-operation with Trevor Dickinson from A-EON. The book with the subtitle "From Vultures to Vampires" will tell the Amiga history "starting from the day when Escom were the highest bidder at Commodore's liquidator’s auction in New York (I was there), how their attempts to relaunch the Amiga spectacularly failed, then the troublesome years when our beloved computer bounced around from company to company, Viscorp, Quickpack, Gateway 2000, etc. and beyond."

For 15 Euro supporters will get an e-book (epub, mobi and PDF), for 30 Euro a printed book. Both variants are supposed to be available in February 2021. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Self-made project: USB joystick adapter with support for three fire buttons
With Volker Oth's "C64 Joystick Adapter" you can connect Atari and Commodore compatible joysticks to modern computers having an USB port. The adapter supports up to three fire buttons, the mode for additional fire buttons (Amiga or C64) is set by a click on the button and displayed with a status LED.

Up to four additional buttons can be connected to the adapter itself, required for navigating in the menus of the C64 replicas THEC64 and THEC64 Mini. On Bitbucket all required documents of the adapter Oth has published under the Creative-Commons licence CC-BY-SA. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Web browser: IBrowse 2.5.3
Press release: IBrowse 2.5.3 has been released and can now be downloaded to update your existing IBrowse 2.5 installation (OS4 users can also upgrade using AmiUpdate). This is a free update for registered owners of IBrowse 2.5. IBrowse 2.4 and 1.x users can upgrade to IBrowse 2.5.3 via our store at discounted rates. We hope you are all well in these strange times - stay safe!

The main target for this new version was to improve performance on HTTPS connections, given that SSL is relatively slow on 68k processors. Despite the performance enhancements that came in AmiSSL 4.4 (4.6 is available now, by the way), there is not much more that can be done in AmiSSL unless someone is able to write 68k assembly optimised versions of some of the modules (as is the case for PowerPC). Therefore, some other options have been exploited to enhance performance, which have been in beta testing over the past 3 months, due to the major changes required to the HTTP engine...

SSL Session Caching:
IBrowse 2.5.3 now implements a SSL session cache for all HTTPS connections, supporting all the differing session/ticket methods use from TLSv1.0 to TLSv1.3. This allows the slow initial handshaking to be bypassed on subsequent connections to the same host, thus increasing performance noticably on OS3, and even on OS4 too. Most websites support this feature universally.

Persistent Connections:
This is an older HTTP feature that was never implemented in IBrowse until now, partly because IBrowse has always relied on opening multiple connections to websites, which didn't really make this feature worthwhile. However, it can be useful for HTTPS connections as it allows them to be left open and reused, without having spend CPU time renegotiating the SSL connection at all. HTTP(S) persistent connections support is now available in IBrowse 2.5.3 (can be disabled in the settings). Not all websites support persistent connections and, some of those that do, do not keep connections open long enough (e.g. 1 second) to make a difference.

We advise that 68k users pay additional attention to the Max. number of connections and Max. number of secure connections settings in the network preferences. These settings may need retuning because of the two new features described above. Probably, you should not set the number of secure connections to above 4, otherwise multiple connections can battle for CPU time and may well end up timing out. Fewer connections can turn out to be faster, but we suggest that you experiment with these settings to see what feels the best on your particular system.

A number of other improvements and fixes have also been made and are listed in the history log and newly updated changes summary. We would also love to hear your experience of the new features on our mailing list which is still working and hosted by Yahoo! Groups. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Encryption protocol: AmiSSL 4.6 (AmigaOS 3/4)
The open source encryption protocol AmiSSL has been updated to version 4.6.

Changes:
  • Updated OpenSSL backend to full compatibility to latest OpenSSL 1.1.1g (21.04.2020) version, which brings security and bug fixes.
  • Tweaks to allow and force Amithlon to use the 68060 target, due to 64-bit integer math emulation being broken in Amithlon (68080 and MorphOS should continue to use the more optimal 68020-40 target).

AmigaOS 4: Financial management "Lüttje Bookholler" 1.80
The author Achim Pankalla wrote: "It is a easy to use personal finance program. "Lüttje Bookholler" is a German dialect and means "little accountant" and that is what you are, when using my little program. The program is capable to import account data via csv-import. LB is email-ware, if you want to use it permanent, please send me an email and you will get some advantages! for examples updates...LB needs at least AOS4.1u6".

Version 1.80 now also supports importing the QIF-format; by adding this extension maybe it is possible to change from a different program to Lüttje Bookholler. Please note that files which were saved with version 1.80, cannot be opened with previous versions of the program.

The author would like to thank all the testers and users. As usual the new version is available on Aminet or OS4Depot. Lüttje Bookholler "probably has not been finished" and is developed further. Actually the author is quite satisfied with his program - therefore it is up to you to call for new features. And of course to report bugs!

Amigakit announced datatype system
Last year the British retailer Amigakit acquired the rights to the AKDatatypes developed by Andreas Kleinert. In a discussion on amiga.org, Matthew Leaman gives insights into the current stage of development. He also explained that Amigakit is not only going to rework the datatypes but also to write a datatypes.library as well as a new AddDatatypes command. For the future it is planned to work "on the datatype system in any meaningful way" which will be the foundation "for many progressive developments".

Some users remarked that the development has not been coordinated with the team of AmigaOS 3.2 and thus maybe some work will be done twice or will result in incompatibilities. Leaman has responded that due to the legal disputes regarding AmigaOS 3.1.4 a co-operation would be risky. Besides, the "professional" (quote from Leaman) developer who is writing the datatype system for Amigakit is paid for his work - but the OS developers would be not. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Another "player" for the game data of classic point'n-click adventures is developed called "Parrot". At least the SCUMM based games developed by Lucasfilm are supposed to run. In contrast to existing solutions like ScummVM, Parrot is being developed especially for the Amiga and therefore is optimized for this system and its chipset. For example before the first launch, all data are converted into typical Amiga formats to make them playable also on less powerful copmputers. Remote access to Amigas: squirt
"squirt" is a server having only 5 kb which is launched on Amigas and then allows the remote access to the computer via the network. Using special command line programs you then can control the Amiga with the help of any other computer. In a text-based console also file transfers, switching directories and executing (non-active) Amiga commands are possible. Additionally squirt can be used as backup solution: A special command creates incremental backups of directories.

Currently squirt only is available as source code and has to be compiled by yourself. If the commands for the remote access only work under Unix-like systems or also under Windows, we cannot say. The system currently allows only anonymous access - therefore the author strongly recommends: do not use the tool on Amiga systems which are connected to the Internet. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Source Preservation: Source texts and PDF books under free licence
The project "Amiga Source Preservation" originally was going to safeguard as many source texts of Amiga programs as possible and making them available under a free licence. Since about a year books on Amiga have been safeguarded as well which then are offered under the Creative Commons licences for free download.

The books are saved in a Gitlab repository and periodically also uploaded to the Aminet. The website of the project offers an overview about the 16 books and 110 source texts released so far. (cg) (Translation: dr)

File manager: MCAmiga 0.5 for all Amiga systems (update)
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's MCAmiga is a file manager similar to Norton and Midnight Commander which additional to the mouse interface can be also completely controlled with the keyboard. MCAmiga is available for AmigaOS (m68k, PPC), MorphOS and AROS (x86, x64, ARM). The program at least requires 4 MB RAM. According to the author the AmigaOS 4 version does not run on a X5000.

Changes in version 0.5:
  • video fixes
  • browse, copy, move, rename, view/edit in lha/lzx archives
  • browse, extract, view files from xad supported archive types
  • start executables by pressing (shift) enter
  • tools menu
  • now includes a build for 68000 CPUs
Hint of the editors: Obviously MCAmiga does not work with Vampire systems, due to the affinity of the Vampire team with operating system "Coffin OS" which also includes illegal copies. The corresponding error message is slightly misleading and suggests a incorrect detection of Coffin OS.

Update: (29.05.2020, 23:00, cg)

According to the author in the comments of his blog, he only forgot to remove the bloackade of the Vampire. The author wrote: "It was my try to point to a problem… seems not many people care.. so it became stupid and useless… therefore I decided a while before already to remove that." Replica of A1200 mainboard: ReAmiga 1200 Revision 1.5
John 'Chucky' Hertell has published an updated version of his A1200 clone ReAmiga 1200. Revision 1.5 among others offers a S-Video instead of a Composite-Video port.

Changes:
  • Fixed a signal shorted to VCC in Rev1.4 (C0D)
  • Added a 74LS08 so now H and V sync is always buffered (this NEEDS to be installed or you will not get V and H sync out onto the monitors)
  • this to allow longer monitorcables and also save Alice if something goes wrong when hotplugging monitorcable.
  • Colorsignals to RGB and VGA port is now always via the PNP transistor buffers, so RGB port will not be a darker color. It is not recomended to
  • attach 2 monitors at once.
  • Composite out is now optional Composite OR Svideo out. (you cannot move old RCA to new board due to this) SVideo needs to be installed aprox 1mm “over” the PCB.
  • Included a “Svideo” standoff for this. do that PCB as a 1mm pcb.
  • Added connector for 7V fan (actually where 5V is “gnd” and 12V is plus)
  • Added leds for _RST, _KB_RST, _ODD_CIA, _EVEN_CIA and _ROMEN also to Serial TXD and RXD (from the 5V level)
  • TOTALLY OPTIONAL!. Resistor at bottom 470Ohm so it is not that bright this is for all leds, change to higher or lower after taste (lowest 33Ohm).
  • Moved Mouseconnector and shrunk PCB some so you can have a mouse PCB like Amiga 1200 Rev 2.
  • Added mousePCB compatible with Amiga 1200 Rev 2 aswell that have a optional Joysticktester (not mousedirection)
  • Added jumperheaders for selectable PAL/NTSC Default start (then do not populate that 0ohm resistor, now removed from locator and pick&place data)
  • Moved VGA Connector so it aligns more to other Dsubs.
  • Adopted components so you can do a full socket of board (remember that sockets is a source of problems)
  • Added resistor to IDE Activity so now adapters that made IDE led always bright will be handled correct.
  • Moved extra powerconnector slightly to not touch BVision when installed.
  • Fixed Silkscreen so all used components now have value.
  • Added pads close to floppyconnector for a 0Ohm resistor if you want to do the Escom floppypatch instead of a wire.
  • Added pads close to ROM socket for optional DRA0 pullup that some machines had with a 470Ohm (I think) resistor from clockport to a via. now a SMD resistor can be used.
  • At bottom of board close to optional 1K resistor for zenerdiode, added a pad for possability to disable the default “sync on green” if wanted. cut and solder

Portrait: The RedPill developer Carlos Peris
Besides the well-known developers like Daniel 'Daytona675x' Müßener (Wings Remastered, MiniGL4GL4ES, Tower 57) or Hans de Ruiter (ZitaFTP, Warp3D Nova) there are a number of other active developers we would like to introduce to our readers in a loose succession.

We would like to start with the Spanish programmer Carlos "trackerhero" Peris. He might be known to our readers for his Amiga game editor RedPill which recently has been updated to version 0.7.14. Additional to Peris the Spanish graphic artist Jordi Palome belongs to the team of Redpill who also has created the logo.

Peris is a professional developer for mobile games working for Ubisoft in Barcelona. Developing software for the Amiga is nothing but a hobby. And although he prefers programming games, he uses his game editor RedPill but, as he explained, "making them in the game editor helps me a lot to put me in the user position and help to improve the tool." Although the editor provides limited features hehopes that the Amiga Fans are interested in RedPill and use it. Peris frankly admits that he finds it easier to start projects than finishing them with a final and satisfying result. Sometimes this is also reflected in his Amiga biography:

This started in 1993. At the age of 14 he got an Amiga. He was impressed: "What a machine!". Thus, as he said himself, he "arrived a bit late to the Amiga scene" using his computer mainly for games. Some years later he got an Amiga 1200 and started programming in Blitz Basic. The first results he himself described as "ugly games" e.g. Wave Run Gold, Whirlwind or Amidonkey. Many of them, as mentioned, unfinished.

Simultaneously he also joined the demo scene, especially "Ozone", writing in 68k assembler. His biggest contribution was the Intro for the "Trashcan 5" demo.

Like many others, at the beginning of the year 2000 he got a PC and learned programming in different languages. He never left the Amiga and at that time among others he released the game which name also became his "pseudonym": Tracker Hero (video). It is a music game similar to "Guitar Hero". He also wrote the game X-MasDisaster at this time.

Now he completely concentrates on RedPill and games based on it. His main goal is to simplify creating 8-Bit games. Nowadays he thinks again more retro games are released. He guessed that "it took more time to the amigans to get back to its passion". Fortunately he could recriut his partner Jordi Palome for his recently started game project HappyBat so we are looking forward for updates.

One request the developer has: "What would help me the most is someone that helps me to explain Redpill to people, like doing tutorials, videos, whatever. I have no time and am not really good at it, and it is really very important!" You can contact the author via the website of RedPill but of course we also can pass on any feedback or support you would provide to him. (dr) (Translation: dr)
