APC&TCP: DigiBooster replayer DigiRoller 1.1
DigiRoller is a standalone replayer for DigiBooster Pro 2.x and DigiBooster 3 music modules. Version 1.1 contains the latest replayer engine featuring AHI-independent DSP echo effect.

The latter is backward compatible with old echo (V till Z commands are fully supported), but the effect is processed inside the engine, so it is always active. Echo in AHI may be safely turned off. Additional feature of the new echo (which will be used in DigiBooster 3) is a new echo mode (command V2), where each track can have independent echo parameters.

Another new feature is phase assisted stereo panoraming. Positioning instruments with not only amplitude, but also small phase shifts improves the music experience.

DigiRoller 1.1 includes other improvements in the replayer as well: working sample offsets (commands 9 and E7) and fixes to B and D commands.

DigiRoller is a free program for AmigaOS, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS and may be downloaded from the DigiBooster site at the title link. (snx)

Curiosity: Amiga games with anaglyph 3D display (Update 2)
It's a little known fact that even on the Amiga, there were attempts at generating a proper 3D display: there are a few titles that use anaglyph projection - known for the '3D glasses' with different colored filters in front of each eye - to create a stereo display.

The first effort was Tim Kemp's 1986 game 3D Breakout (screenshots: 1, 2). A year later "Forms in Flight" was released in the US: a graphics programm that could display the three dimensional objects in proper 3D (screenshot). In December 1990 Third Dimension from the Cryptoburners was published as the first scene demo in 3D (Youtube video).

Armin Harich's 3D Motorrad was published in an issue of the disk magazine "Amigo!" in 1992. In December that same year, the scene group Spaceballs released their classic demo State of the Art, which features a 3D scene at about half of its running time (Screenshot).

Note: All mentioned titles require red/blue 3D glasses (red filter for the left eye). If you know other games or demos using this technique, we would appreciate if you could let us know.

Update 2: (18.04.2012, 15:00, cg)

Our readers pointed out some more titles using anaglyph projection:

Update: (16.04.2012, 22:30, cg)

Added 'Third Dimension' and '3D Motorrad'. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Commodore-founder Jack Tramiel died
As announced today, on Sunday the founder of Commodore Jack Tramiel has died. Under the leadership of Tramiel, Commodore was growing to the second biggest supplier of computers worldwide. The founder of a company had to leave the it due to conflicts with his longtime investor Irving Gould and changed to the competitor Atari.

Finally Tramiel came into contact with Amiga: After the takeover of Atari he found an existing contract with a little startup-company which developed a powerful, m68000-based computer. Tramiel who always said "business is war" insisted on the immediate repayment of a credit granted by Atari although he knew that the little startup-company was not able to do that.

Just before he could buy the company for a ridiculous price, his former company Commodore thwarted his plans and bought the startup "Amiga" of four times what Tramiel offered. (cg) (Translation: dr)

MovieSetter-Plugin for Hollywood
Press release: Airsoft Softwair has just released a very special Easter egg for all Hollywood users: A Hollywood plugin for videos created with Gold Disk's famous MovieSetter tool.

MovieSetter (photo) is renowned in the Amiga community because it is the tool which Eric W. Schwartz used to create his legendary clips like the Aerotoons (screenshot), Flip the Frog and Clarisse Cat, Sabrina, the intro of Team17's Superfrog (screenshot), the very funny Anti Lemmin' Demo (screenshot) and of course the Juggette clips.

Unfortunately, the original player written by Gold Disk bangs the hardware quite a lot and thus doesn't run on modern systems. But with the MovieSetter for Hollywood plugin you can now for the very first time experience Eric W. Schwartz's great animations in all their glory on your AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS system - fully PPC native with retargetable audio through AHI and RTG graphics as well! Only Hollywood makes it possible!

You can download the plugin from the official Hollywood portal at the title link. Thanks to Hollywood 5.0's cross-platform plugin system, versions for AmigaOS 3.x (Classic), AmigaOS 3.x (FPU), AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, WarpOS, AROS (Intel), Linux (PowerPC), Linux (Intel), Mac OS (PowerPC), Mac OS (Intel) and Windows are provided.

As a special convenience service we have also created a single archive that contains most of Eric's animations in just one file. Airsoft Softwair wishes all Amiga users a Happy Easter!

As usual the developers of the well-known Amiga emulator WinUAE has provided a short preview to the next version. WinUAE 2.4.1 is supposed to be published during the next two weeks and mainly will fix minor bugs. Additionally there will be minor improvememnts like a CPU-brake for the JIT-mode. New features and updates:
  • Fastest possible CPU mode (including JIT) throttle option (-10% to -90%)
  • Approximate CPU mode speed adjustment (-90% to 500%+). Replaces old CPU/Chipset adjustment
  • Internal display buffering system rewritten, PAL/NTSC vertical centering, even better screen positiong in programmed modes
  • Fullscreen (TV)/(Max) filter mode programmed mode and PAL/NTSC switching support
  • Custom Input Event autofire support
  • Switch to another monitor if multiple monitors with different resolutions and current RTG resolution is not supported by current monitor
  • CDFS statefile support implemented
  • Sound sync improved in approximate and cycle-exact modes

Bug fixes of version 2.4.0:
  • CDFS directory listing crashed if ACTION_EXAMINE_ALL packet was used
  • CDFS converted file names to lowercase even when CD included RockRidge or Joliet file names
  • Fake 60Hz didn't work
  • Software filters had very big slowdown in higher resolutions
  • D3D overlay mask scaling artifacts in some resolutions

  • Some USB joysticks had multiple buttons with same name

Bug fixes of older versions:
  • Automatic scale/center/resize didn't work in ECS SuperPlus mode
  • 68020 cycle-exact mode statefile reliability improved. (Random "CPU trace" errors)
  • 0.5M Chip RAM was detected as 1M in JIT mode

Self build: Floppy-Autoloader
Archieving about 5000 Amiga disks is no fun - therefore blogger 'Dweller' has been looking for a solution to automate the process.

He used a commercial disk duplicator (CopyPro 2000) and converted it to a floppy autoloader which loads one disk after another, creates an image file and finally takes a picture if it ejects the disk (video). (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS: Considerations on MorphOS-compatibility
The developer Jason McMullan who helped to make AROS compatible to the 68k-architecture and to create an AROS-Kickstart-ROMs, is looking for new challenge.

On the developer mailinglist (full quotes below) he asked for the interest in the executability of MorphOS applications under AROS/PPC. For that there also is a bounty project but this was started in 2005. To this time Apple was about to bring computers with Intel processors onto the market. Besides, some money of the donations was used for different AROS bounties.

Jason explained that the API of AmigaOS 4 is very different from AROS and MorphOS, but many AROS-libraries already include stubs for MorphOS-functions beyond the 3.x-API. Additionally source codes has been already shared with MorphOS.

Against this background, he would like AROS to be seen as a kind of transitional solution for MorphOS developers for the source code level. The developers could check their precompiled PowerPC-programms if AROS made available all features which they require. Then they could compile their programms for AROS/x86 as well having the certainty that they only have to fix some possible Endianess-problems.

In his opinion this could result in the option for MorphOS to use AROS as base for a MorphOS/x86 with PowerPC-compatibility with the help of a Rosetta-kind of PPC-to-x86-interface.

Staf Verhaegen complemented that it also could be possible to add the ppcmos und ppcos4 architectures to the AROS/PPC-architecture to be able to offer cpmpatible versions for both operating systems and finally to unite all Amiga systems in a single and open source operating system.

Quotes from the mailing list

Jason McMullan: "OS4's API (interfaces, etc) is very different, structurally, from AROS/MorphOS 4. Many of our libraries already have the MorphOS function stubs for post 3.x APIs. And we already share code with MorphOS.

I would like to see AROS as a 'source level' transition for MorphOS developers, allowing them to run their pre-compiled PPC binaries on AROS PPC (to ensure that AROS supports the services their Application uses), then they can recompile for x86, knowing that they should only need to fix the inevitable endianess issues.

Who knows - maybe MorphOS could contribute a 'Rosetta' style PPC->x86 interface, then they could use AROS x86 as a kernel for a 'MorphOS x86' (with PPC compatability)."

Staf Verhaegen: "To summarize ppc arch would use native packing for all structs and a pointer table for the LVOs without special stub code. ppcmos would apply special packing to structs that need it and provide the MOS LVO table convention for shared libraries.

In the end I would like to have then also a ppcos4 arch that would then be targeted to be OS4 compatible with their interfaces for shared libraries etc. One open source OS to unite them all!" (snx) (Translation: dr)
