cnet.device 1.5
Harry Sintonen has released version 1.5 of the PCMCIA ethernet driver "cnet" on 02 November 2000. This is a SANA2-driver for the PCMCIA slot of the A600 and A1200 supporting most of the NE2000-compatible cards. A list of the cards and the assembler source code of the driver are included in the archive. Compared to the previous version the following has been changed:
  • Changed: The list of the compatible cards has been updated.
  • Changed: The device assumes that a network card is there even when the CISTPL_FUNC_ID-Tuplewasn't found. With this the driver should work with some additional cards (Microcomputer Research Inc's Mr Ethernet).
  • Bugfix: A problem with the pre-v39 FreePooled()-function was fixed.

The driver runs on OS 2.04 and higher.

Matthias Sar is looking for all users who still work or have worked with TheAnswerIII and don't want that such a good POINT program simply fades away. Please contact Matthias Sar with your name, who will collect the votes and pass them on to the author.

Sar wants to ask the author (Wegar) to give his project (TA3) into the hands of programmers who still see some sense in supporting TA3. Alternatively, maybe the author can be persuaded to release a public keyfile so that all interested users can use the program.

New Company: SurvivorOrg
«After the recent news of Crystal Software and Electronics (CS&E) leaving the Amiga market, and the following news that Dirk Harlaar would be the new managing director of CS&E, this news has to be rectified once again. Managing director of CS&E, David Connolly, has decided to stay managing director of his company. However, CS&E will no longer be active in the Amiga market. A new company has been founded, Survivor Org., which has gotten the rights to any Amiga publications CS&E had. Managing director of this company is Dirk Harlaar. (And this is the final, true news). Survivor Org. will focus on Amiga software, and we hope to bring you more news about forthcoming releases soon. Please understand that this new company is still in the very early days. We do have some games signed up already, but it is much to early to say anything about them yet. Cosmos Fun Class, the educational program that "came with the inventory of CS&E" will be released shortly by Survivor Org.»

AmigaWriter-Import Filter for Pagestream
Ruediger Hanke has uploaded version 0.9 of his AmigaWriter-import filter to the web. The filter loads documents of AmigaWriter version 1.0-2.20 to PageStream. For instance it makes possible:
  • printing documents of AmigaWriter to PostScript
  • exporting documents of AmigaWriter to PDF
  • using AmigaWriter as WYSIWYG-replacement for PageLiner

You can find a detailed list in the section "Technical Notes" which elements of documents of AmigaWriter can be imported and which cannot, and how conflicts resulting from the different implementation of some features in AW and PGS can be solved. For more information, a screenshot and for downloading please have a look at the title link.

Rainer Benda on ANF

Rainer Benda takes off OS-software from net
Rainer Benda has taken off all Kickstart- and Workbench-disks from his website by order of Amiga Inc. Until its bankruptcy in spring of 1994 Commodore(C=) Germany offered in the support-area of their own mailbox "Combo" some Amiga-software for download. The Amiga-Workbench-disks, -Kickstart-files as well as ROM`s and utility-disks among other files. These files were only meant for support and were only allowed to be downloaded to supply some newer versions of C=`s software or if a disk was faulty. Rainer Benda, former employee of Commodore Germany, was SysOp of this mailbox.

In 1994 Commodore bankrupted and Rainer Benda first took over these files as far as they were existing on his own mailbox "Black-Zone" and later on his own website, and offered those under the conditions of the Combo for free support. In this way Amiga-user could use this offer over a long time without any problems. He solved legal doubts with the liquidator of Commodore Hembach, and later with Petro Tyschtschenko (Amiga International, Amiga Germany).

During the last years Commodore was auctioned to Escom, Escom bankrupted and after a while the rights of Commodore were given to Gateway. During this time there were no doubts on the legal status of the files neither by the owner nor by the liquidator Hembach.

At the end of 1999 the firm Amino (today Amiga Inc.) founded by Bill McEwen and Fleecy Moss bought the Amiga-rights from Gateway. In April 2000 first Benda got the request by Cloanto to remove the OS-files from the website. Together with Amiga Forever Cloanto sells an Amiga-emulation-packet based on UAE which contains the OS-files with a paid licence. (The reason for this request is explained by Cloanto generally at Distribution of Amiga ROM and OS Files. Because there was not a statement of the new owner to the legal status of the files until this time, Benda did not comply with the request.

Some days later Benda got the urgent request by Gary Peake, Amiga Inc., to remove all software from his website which is under copyright of Amiga. After some discussions between Benda and Amiga, Benda removed the AmigaOS V3.1 Kickstart- and Workbench-disks from the net to protect the interests of Cloanto. Since then there were no other reactions. From the point of view of Benda you can read up this course of events in the part 3.1 of his essay "Meine Story zum Untergang von C=" (German).

To this time the AmigaPlus CD No. 3/2000 was released that contains the Kickstart- and Workbench-files up to Amiga V2.0 and nearly all other support-files with permission of Petro Tyschtschenko without paying any licence. Only the Kickstart- and Workbench-files of AmigaOS 2.1 up to 3.1 are not on this CDRom. These commercial sales were possible without paying something for the licence without any problems. Furthermore Kickstart 1.3/3.0 and Workbench 3.0 appeared on the CD of the PC-magazine UAE No. 3/2000. At the end of October 2000 Benda got a letter of the department of law of the German Telekom with the request of removing all files from the websites http://home.t-online.de/r.benda/soft2.html, and http://home.t-online.de/home/r.benda/soft3.html. This request was caused by Gary Peake.

These sites contained the remained Amiga-Workbench-disks, Amiga-Kickstarts as well as BETA-/development-software. Benda complied with this request that means there is no longer any AmigaOS-software for exchanging faulty disks for download on his website. Amiga itself offers a corresponding help. If you have got faulty Workbench-disks or something like that you can contact Amiga for help.

Digital Images

Digital Images: Deadlock
In the above statement, Stuart Walker of Digital Images explains why the game Space Station 3000 will not be released. However, "Deadlock" as a new Amiga game and "Wipeout 2097" as a Mac-port of the Psygnosis game are announced.

Development of Space Station 3000 has been canceled because the 2.5 years of development did not give any tangible results. The game was redesigned and rewritten again and again, but the nice ideas did not turn into results.

Deadlock is a Space Combat Simulator having its origins in Space Station 3000. The game will make use of many so far unpublished space vessels from Space Station 3000 and will be set in the 22th century. The game website has some graphics of the vessels, and more.

Digital Images also purchased the Macintosh license for Wipeout 2097. Details on this are announced for the near future.

CS&E not completely gone

As David Connolly, director of CS&E, announced, CS&E England has left the Amiga market. After long discussions, David Connolly has decided to hand over the Amiga part of CS&E to the newly appointed sales director, Dirk Harlaar.

Based in Germany, this branch of CS&E will focus on games distribution for the Amiga as well as the PC. The forthcoming educational software "Cosmos Fun Class" is at this time being translated into German and Dutch, in order to reach a wider audience.

Further products can not yet be announced, as CS&E has just started this branch, and is still looking for games devellopers who want to publish their work through their outlets.
