THE FAST ATA-2/EIDE CONTROLLER

In recent times, the extremely dynamic progress in the mass production
technology of data storage media has resulted in a huge increase
of their capacity and speed. It is especially apparent in the devices
which make use of the FAST ATA-2/EIDE standard of communication with
computers.
Enhanced IDE is at present the most common controller standard for
hard drives, CD-ROM drives, CD-RW drives, DVD drives, etc.

The Amiga 1200 has a built-in hard disk controller in the IDE standard.
However, only the PIO 0 mode of operation has been implemented in the
Amiga 1200, which is the slowest of all PIO modes with a maximum
transfer rate of about 3 MB/s.

The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller idea has been based upon the
assumption to fully use the currently produced devices in
the FAST ATA-2/EIDE standard with their increased speed and capacity.
The aim of this solution is to adapt the existing Amiga computer
systems to the new, many times more effective devices, while retaining
full compatibility with the existing software and hardware installed
in the system.

The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller has been designed to fit inside the
Amiga 1200 in its standard casing or in any Tower-type casing.
The controller works with two EIDE ports, which can accommodate up
to four devices. Apart from the PIO 0 standard, necessary for
booting up the Amiga computer from a hard disk and for accepting
the oldest types of devices, the card also provides for fast
PIO 3 and PIO 4 modes.

THE FAST ATA-2/EIDE CONTROLLER FEATURES

The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller with its many features represents
the highest technology controller in its category. The following
list describes some of these features:

Fast transfer rate of up to 16.6 MB/s

The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller with its maximum transfer rate
of 16.6 MB/s in the PIO 4 mode offers a huge capacity reserve for
fast mass storage devices, especially for fast hard drives.
Therefore, applications may run much faster if they can count on
fast access to large data files.

Support of ATAPI standard devices

The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller implements the ATAPI standard as
well, for use with devices like CD-ROM drives, DVD drives, etc.
This enables the connection of ATAPI-standard devices to the Amiga
with no need for the installation of additional software.

Two buffered and terminated EIDE ports

The controller operates with two EIDE ports, which enable
installation of up to four IDE/EIDE/ATAPI devices. Both controller
ports are fully buffered and terminated in accordance with the
recommendations set forth in the ATA-3 specification.

Fully compatible with hard drives of over 4 GB capacity

Limitations on the size of hard disks have been overcome in the
FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller. The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller may be
used with hard drives of over 4 GB capacity with no need to change
the FastFileSystem used so far for file management.

Automatically configured devices

The Controller automatically recognises any devices attached to it,
negotiates the highest possible data transfer rates, switches the
devices into its appropriate mode and performs data transfers at
their maximum transfer rates.

Automatic recognition of the processor type

The FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller automatically detects processor type
used and optimises and modifies some software routines
in order to achieve the highest possible data transfer rate between
the controller and the computer memory.

32-bit access

The computer recognises the controller as a 32-bit device configured
in the address space of the previous IDE controller, which has been
disconnected. Full 32-bit operation of the controller combined with
very efficient software guarantees a significant increase in the
speed of your computer.

Other features of the FAST ATA-2/EIDE Controller:

* 2 devices in different modes of operation (PIO 3 or PIO 4)
may be connected simultaneously to each of the ports without speed
  reduction.
* New mass storage data verification procedure free of ROM-based errors.
* The software installation is performed automatically by the
installation programme script found in the enclosed floppy disk.

Digital Images suspending Amiga development
Reply-To: digital-images-news@egroups.com
From: Stuart Walker
To; digital-images-news@egroups.com

Subject: [digital-images-news] Digital Images Update

To Amiga users worldwide,

Due to recent announcements and problems with Amiga, Digital Images regrets
that we will be suspending all AmigaMCC projects including Sabrina Offline.
Space Station 3000 and Wipeout 2097 will be released as planned, but we will
be suspending all other Amiga developments until further notice.

Everyone behind Digital Images has enthusiastically supported the Amiga
through the good times and the bad times. But with the recent troubles with
Amiga, the entire team has unanimously decided to suspend all Amiga
developments (with the exception of Space Station 3000 and Wipeout 2097). We
regret to have to take these measures, but Digital Images cannot afford to
spend time, resources and money developing for a computer which now, as it
seems may never appear.

We hope that everybody reading this understands our position as this is the
last thing that any of us would ever have wanted to do, but Amiga have made
promise after promise that something would appear, but it has not.

We deeply regret this decision, but it is a final measure that has to be
taken. We wish that we wouldn't have to go this far, but we now have no
other option - it is the last thing that any of us wanted to do. We would
appreciate it if everybody understood our position and wouldn't send e-mails
of anger and abuse. We have done everything in our power to avoid this, but
it just isn't possible.

If the Amiga does indeed rise again, which we hope it does, we will return.

We hope that you will enjoy our upcoming releases of Space Station 3000 and
Wipeout 2097.

If you do have any questions or queries concerning this announcement, please
e-mail info@digital-images.demon.co.uk

We thank you all once again for your loyal and devoted support.

Kind Regards,

Stuart Walker

CCC Press Release about MS Crypto API Backdoor
Press Information from Chaos Computer Club
Microsoft Operating Systems with builtin Backdoor:
Secure cryptography with Windows jeopardized
By detailed research with the WindowsNT operating system by an American Security Software developer, a massive software backdoor could be revealed in the operating systems Windows95, 98, NT and Windows 2000 (beta), which is likely dating back to an initiative by the US secret service NSA. This has a heavy impact on Microsoft's operating systems security.
After the initiatives of the American secret service NSA (National Security Agency) for worldwide communications control by means of internationally standarised regulation of encryption have suffered severe setbacks, now obviously it is attempted to reach the same goals by implementing backdoors in the American software products dominating the market. (Rest of the press release at the title link.)

I consider it a shame how US NSA (and German authorities, too!) violate the most basic civil rights "for the greater good". Even worse, they get away with spying on your eMail, your phone, your whatever, because they "are the good ones"... yeah, sure. (mb) (ps)

Kamil Iskra in c.s.a.p

gcc 2.95.1 for AmigaOS
Kamil Iskra has released the binaries of "gcc 2.95.1" for AmigaOS. They can be found on the GeekGadgets servers at amiga/m68k/alpha/misc/gcc-2.95.1-bin020.tgz (6.47 MB).
They are compiled for 68020+ CPUs, and can be loaded residently. The sourcecodes are available by anonymous login from the GeekGadgets CVS server.
With gcc version 2.95, the seperate branches of gcc and egcs are merged back together, so GeekGadgets again uses exclusively gcc.
Improvements have been made e.g. in register handling, so the previously common "fixed or forbidden register was spilled" error should be less frequent with this version.
More informations about gcc 2.95 are available at gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.95/features.html. (ps)

Met@box: Informations about amiJoe1200
Some time ago, we asked Met@box about some info about the amiJoe1200 board, and recieved the following eMail by Thomas Rudloff:

This is the latest Info, newer will surely surface in one or two weeks based on the latest developments.

Up to 143 times as fast as an original Amiga(TM) 1200 (calculated by Motorola specifications at 333 MHz)

That's the amiJoe...
- the amiJoe1200 is the ideal CPU-expansion to bring the Amiga(TM) 1200 to the PowerPC(TM) era.

This does the amiJoe1200
By using the powerful PPC750 (G3) CPU, the high-performance backside cache and the PCI bridge, the Amiga(TM) 1200 turns into a modern computer. Due to the integrated 68k emulation, current Amiga software stays usable, while PPC(TM) native programs can make use of the full speed advantage.
The RAM expansion to up to 512 MB is done with PC66 SO-DIMMs common to the laptop scene. Of course, the amiJoe1200 has a real-time clock.

Hello All,

I regret to inform that Bill McEwen told me as of
Tuesday he will no longer be under contract at
Amiga. Sigh.

I called him about some newsletter plans he had
in mind, only to receive yet another bit of
disappointing news.

Regards,
Fabian

Finland this year, will be on this Saturday in Vantaa. The show starts at

previews will be there as well. Attendance is free of charge.

For those who can't attend, the Finnish Amiga Users Group will be hosting a

http://tzimmola.tky.hut.fi/saku/english/, for further information. E-mail
inquiries may be sent to Janne Sirén (siren@mikrobitti.fi).

About Saku 99

Saku 99 will be the biggest Amiga event in Finland this year. Following the
success of Saku 98, which was visited by some 500 Amiga enthusiasts, Saku
99 is aimed to be bigger and better than the previous events. Mr. Petro
Tyschtschenko of Amiga has already confirmed his presence and other great
highlights are planned. Saku 99 will be held on Saturday September 4th 1999
at the Science Centre Heureka in Vantaa, near Helsinki.

About Finnish Amiga Users Group

organization for promoting Amiga computing and helping Amiga users in
Finland. Also known as Saku, after it's disk magazine, the group is trying
to accomplish it's goals by organizing meetings and by publishing a disk
magazine. Since 1993 the Finnish Amiga Users Group and it's predecessors
have released over thirty issues of the disk magazine and held several
public gatherings. Other accomplishments include the Web site and Sakunet,
a national Fidonet style network of Amiga related bulletin board systems.

FMdriver Update Version 1.12
Stefan Robl writes:
The FMdriver packet has been improved further:
All programs can now save in IFF format, too (8 as well as 24 bit). All problems with flicker or lines in small resolutions should be fixed, the FPS rate now looks much more stable, too. A serious bug has been removed that occured when there was no Prism24 module connected. The FMRecorder now offers several file formats, so it will work with every video software. Small changes and bugfixes.

Fast 3D gfx chip by nVidia
Heise writes, among other:
California gfx chip manufacturer nVidia presented the 3D chip for PC graphic gards previously dubbed "NV10" in Berlin. The GeForce 256 is the first graphic chip for consumer PCs that processes and displays 3D data mainly on its own.
With 23 million transistors, the GeForce 256 is more than twice as complex as a Pentium-III CPU (9 million transistors). Since it does geometry transformations and lighting calculations much faster than the PC CPU, it can create 3D objects and 3D virtual realities with much more detail and fluid moves. Thus, PC games can make use of curved and organic structures like in movies a la "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life". (Full article - German - at the title link).
Here is another interesting link on the subject. (ps)

Seybold Conference: First Macs with PowerPC G4 CPU
MacGadget, among others, writes:
As expected, Apple CEO Steve Jobs presented a new generation of Macintosh computers in his keynote to the Seybold Conference in San Francisco, which are powered for the first time by the top-performing PowerPC G4 CPU. Apple called the new Macs "supercomputers", offering significantly more speed than the current Power Macintosh G3 product line. Apple starts shipping the first 400 MHz G4 system today. Versions with 450 and 500 MHz are bound to follow in the next two weeks.
The main performance specs are a 2x AGP bus, integrated AirPort technology, an Ultra 66 ATA system and an accelerated PCI bus. Jobs spend special attention on the AltiVec technology. This especially speeds up operations heavy on numerical calculations, like graphic applications. A special AltiVec-optimised expansion to Photoshop is included with every G4 Mac. The new systems will cost between 1599 and 3499 USD. A PowerPC G4 with 500 MHz is said to be much faster than a Pentium III with 600 MHz. The Power Macintosh G4 will be shipped in the same casing as the current G3 line, but not in blue-white but silver-white.
The new configurations in overview:
Power Mac G4/400, 64 MB memory, 10 GByte-HD, 32speed CD-ROM; 1599 $
Power Mac G4/450, 128 MB memory, 20 GByte-HD, DVD-ROM; 2499 $
Power Mac G4/500, 256 MB memory, 27 GByte-HD, DVD-RAM; 3499 $
(More details at the title link - German -) (ps)

Hyperion brings "Smacker" to Amiga
"Smacker" is an industrial standard video codec, developed by RAD Game Tools and used in over 1400 games. Currently, Smacker is only available for MAC (68k and PPC), DOS, Windows 3.x, 95 and NT. At first, Hyperion considered developing an own video codec, but since Heretic 2 by Activision and Shogo:MAD by Monolith make use of Smacker, it was decided to save developing time and purchase the license for the port, since Smacker is really fast and efficient when used with only 256 colors. smacker.com. Hotmail cracked completely
FutureZone writes:
Mail of every user readable | no password needed | details unknown so far | FutureZone has tested Exploit
The free mail service Hotmail has been cracked heavily today. With a web form it is possible to read any user's mail - without password. FutureZone has a corresponding link, first tests revealed: Every Hotmail account is readable. (Full article - German - at the title link.)
August 31st, 1999:
Heise writes, among others: Hotmail hole fixed for now
About twelve hours after the Hotmail hack became public, Microsoft reported the bug has been fixed. In the meantime, the Hotmail server was offline. Our editors however recieved messages until late in the night that readers were able to scan Hotmail accounts without the need for a password. After the Microsoft announcement at 2:00 AM local time, this seems to be impossible. Microsoft has not yet commented about the technical background making the attack possibe.
Spiegel Netzwelt, among others, writes: Hacker group claims responsibility for Hotmail hack
According to informations of the online news service "Wired", a so far unknown hacker group claimed responsibility for the move on Monday. The online magazine cites a Swedish spokesman that is reported to have made contact with "Wired". According to him, the group named "Hackers Unite" consists of a Swedish and seven US-Americans. The hackers made the backdoor public to bring attention to the insufficient security of Microsoft's products: "We didn't make this hack to destroy, but to show the world how bad the security really is at Microsoft, and that the company nearly has a monopoly on computer software", a 21-year-old group member is cited. VMdriver new version 1.10
Stefan Robl writes:
The new version 1.10 of the FMdriver packet contains numerous innovations; e.g. the limitation to graphic cards has been removed, programms are now running in satisfactory quality in 2-256 colors (!!). New are the programms FMInit, FMGrab (great for WebCams!), FMRecord/FMRecordDec and FMRecorder.
FMRecorder makes it possible to comfortably record videos with the FrameMachine. The program contains, aside from an anim viewer, a converter to encode the video as MPEG later on. You can download screenshots from the programs, and a MPEG animation recorded with FMRecord (and encoded with CreateMPEG) from my homepage. (ps)

FusionPPC: Only 380 of the needed 500 preorders recieved
Thomas Lorenz writes:
There are still many preorders missing. Here the latest news from the Fusion mailinglist:
From: Jim Drew msdei@ctaz.com
Subject: [FUSION]: PPC upgrade status
This is an official announcement from Microcode Solutions...
As many of you know, Microcode Solutions has been trying to establish a base market for its new emulations. We presented the public with a test marketting idea of pre-paying for a PowerPC emulation. We reached our base goal of 500 units (actually we reached nearly 700), and then we announced that we were now accepting the pre-payments. To date we have only 380 pre-payments (none of which have been processed), meaning that we are still short 120 units before we can commit to producing this product. It has been several months since we have been collecting actual pre-payments. We are spending an incredible amount of time and resources on this project (which is 1/1000th the revenue of our PC market), and we hope that we are not wasting our time by doing so. We ask that if you have not placed your order yet, please do so now. If we do not reach the 500 unit goal, we will not release the product, no matter how much we have completed so far... we will use some of the work for our PC version. x (ps)
