AmigaOS 4: Utility PowerReboot V0.9
Francis G. Loch's PowerReboot is the evolution of OS4Reboot and, including version 0.8 released a few days ago, the first update in about 20 years. As the author tells us, his tool can now not only reboot AmigaOS 4, but can also switch off the computer if the hardware supports it, which is why he decided to rename it.
With regard to the history of development, he remembers: "The very first version of the program (imaginatively titled 'Reboot') was actually written on an Amiga 1200 because I wanted a program that would sit on the Workbench that I could use to reboot the system via a requester. Version 1.x was written in BlitzBasic and version 2.x was rewritten in C as I wanted to learn how to program in C.
When I got a MicroA1 I also wanted to program for AmigaOS 4. Reboot being a simple program, I thought it would be a good one to start with, so OS4Reboot was born. OS4Reboot went through a number of iterations adding features like making it a commodity amongst other things."
After a longer break and the sale of the hardware, he now owns an AmigaOne A1222 Plus and wants to get back into programming for AmigaOS 4. He discarded his first idea of reviving OS4Reboot when he realised that the functionality was already available in the last version of the operating system. However, feedback from users on the Amigans.net forum encouraged him to continue, as some people preferred the way OS4Reboot worked: for example, it is possible to drop the icon in the X-Dock and run the program from there instead of using the pull-down menu.
He has summarised for us the differences/advantages of PowerReboot compared to the built-in option in AmigaOS 4.1:
- Ability to use it from an icon on the Workbench or dock.
- Has the ability to add a user-selectable delay prior to rebooting via the icon ToolTypes.
- PowerReboot doesn't (currently) inhibit and flush the filesystems before rebooting/shutting down, but this also means that the reboot/shutdown is immediate which might be preferred by some.
- The latest developmental version 0.9, released today, has the ability to hide the softboot option which is a benefit to some as some graphics cards appear to have issues with this.
PowerReboot (and its predecessor OS4Reboot) was originally designed to run in the background and be available via the Tools menu of the Workbench: on first execution it is simply loaded into memory, on subsequent executions the requester is called unless it has been configured to bypass the requester and only perform a restart or shutdown. The current development version 0.9 now changes the behaviour and sets the default NONRESIDENT option in the Icon-ToolTypes, which means that PowerReboot does not remain in memory. This also means that it can display the requester on first startup.
PowerReboot 0.9 also includes locale support, and has been translated to a number of languages including German.
Thank you very much for the information, Francis! Have fun with the further development!

Creating and reading disk images: Disk Jockey V3.4 for macOS
At the end of March, we reported on Jean-Michel Durand's "Disk Jockey" (DJ), with which you can easily create and analyse (Disk-O-Matic) disc images for retro computers and emulators under macOS 10.13 to macOS 14. After version 3.0, he continued to work on the programme and has now made version 3.4 available.
In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, DJ now understands HFS+ and makes it possible to extract files from it. Also, whenever possible, Disk-O-Matic now displays the file type in the file browser. It is now much easier to recognise which files are text files, which are images and which are programs, for example.
As the author points out somewhat smugly, there is still no AI in Disk Jockey. It's "aall hand-made with human fallibility, questionable design choices and, most of all, love for the craft. And coffee."
As the author kindly explained to us on request, in addition to the version for macOS, which is being actively developed, there is also a Disk Jockey for Windows, which can also be used to create empty images. However, he left it at that and did not implement the rest of the Disk Jockey, as there are already good solutions for Windows.
Finally, there is Disk Jockey Jr (djjr), Disk Jockey for the command line, which runs on macOS and Linux. It received a major update a few months ago and can now do things that the full Disk Jockey for macOS can do (such as analyse disk images, including ADF). This "branch" is also in active development.

Individual Computers: Features of Indivision ECS V4
V4 of the Indivision ECS flickerfixer and scandoubler developed by Individual Computers will be available in limited quantities from 15 July. The previous version V3 is sold out. In a forum post, developer Jens Schönfeld explains new functions and details of the new version:
- the FPGA has almost twice the capacity. This lets us implement more features, yet keep the same form factor as the previous versions.
- all-new appearance in all-black. This is in line with the colour of our most successful product ever, the ACA500plus. Not that it matters much in a closed computer, but after 16 years, I felt it was time for a change from the blue that the three previous versions have used. Even the cable to the VGA connector is black!
- more sophisticated clock generation. While Indivision ECS V2 and V3 were completely async, we now have the possibility to generate precise whole-number multiples of the native Amiga pixel clock. This improves the VSync feature a lot, because the monitor's capability requirement is reduced to 50Hz for PAL or 60Hz for NTSC modes, but it doesn't have to be a specific V-Sync-capable monitor any more (like an expensive gaming monitor). Your choice of low-cost monitors with VGA input increases a lot with this - it's the same feature that Invidision AGA MK3 users already enjoy under the name "auto resolution mode".
- EDID monitor identification: The config tool can detect the monitor and read supported modes, so fiddling with monitor settings is vastly simplified
- CIA adapter for keyboard signals: This lets us implement the live-config feature, which is highly appreciated by Indivision AGA MK3 users. Bringing this to OCS/ECS machines, which are often used for gaming, was a "must" - you can pan/zoom the picture with the mouse after pressing a magic keyboard combination while the game is running.
- Graffiti false-positive avoidance: Generally, Graffiti mode is activated on a line-by-line basis using the Genlock Audio bit (GAUD). Some games set this bit without actually wanting to use Graffiti mode. We're developing a heuristic that also looks at more criteria to tell if it's really a program for the Graffiti hardware, or if it's a false positive that would otherwise result in garbled graphics.
- I have kept the amount of memory on the flickerfixer at 8MBytes. Although I'm constantly trying to reduce prices, it would not have made any sense to reduce the amount of memory to 2MBytes (whích is the next-smaller chip you can buy), because it would make double-buffering impossible. Instead, I have wired this Ram differently, so we can address it byte-by-byte. This doesn't impact the current functionality (which only uses 16-bit accesses to this memory), but will allow us to add things in the future that would be very slow to do on the previous versions of this flicker fixer.
- the OSD now has true transparency and can be positioned in any corner of the output picture. I know that many people find the OSD just annoying and always switch it off, which is of course still an option. For those of you who have the OSD visible, it can now softly fade out to complete transparency, adding a little modern "bling" to the look-and-feel.
- Improved interlace handling: If you drag sreens and you have a non-interlace screen in front of an interlace screen, the whole picture will turn to interlace if you drag the front screen down. Previously, this resulted in a screen mode change on Indivision, which may result in the monitor going into re-sync mode, showing a black screen for a few seconds. The new interlace handling can now avoid this.
As the developer goes on to explain, there are further plans. The price of Indivision ECS V4 will remain the same as that of V3 until the functions have been completed. There is no timetable for the implementation of the following features:
- change position and zoom factor in auto-resolution modes
- improve auto-resolution to support 3x and 4x pixels
- detect and support A2024 "Hedley monitor" screen modes
- make OSD auto-sizing, so readability on high-resolution monitors is improved
- inhibit Amiga's access to mouse movement data during live configuration (movement only - LMB can't be inhibited!)
- add a framebuffer mode with 256 colours out of 21 bits colour, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 pixels
- add 64x64-pixel sprite with 4 colours to framebuffer mode
- add 2D acceleration to framebuffer mode
- add second draggable screen to framebuffer mode (must have same resolution as first screen)
- implement P96 driver for framebuffer mode - don't expect wonders here! It's questionable if Picasso-II performance can be reached.

Worth a read: 42 years of programming - The Amiga
Matthias Wiesmann is a Swiss computer scientist who took part in a programming camp 42 years ago, where he learned to program for the TRS-80. As he writes in his blog, programming languages have changed a lot over time, and the computer world used to be much more diverse back then:
"These days, a lot of concepts in computer science settled on one solution: there is one network stack, one type of filesystem, one low-level programming language, etc. It certainly makes things simpler, but this kind of consensus is also a big risk. What I will do is go over the various devices I interacted and explain how they were weird compared with today’s mental model."
In a previous article in English, Wiesmann took a look at the Commodore 64. Now he has turned his attention to the Amiga under the title link and describes the special features of the system from a personal perspective: chipset, planar graphics, weird graphics modes such as HAM8, interlaced graphics and sound modules.

Using image files and discs in PC drives: DiskFlashback V1.0.1.0
Developer Rob Smith has written DiskFlashback, a convenient software for Windows 10/11 (64-bit) that enables PC floppy drives to read and write image files such as ADFs (Amiga Disk Files) during operation. It also allows you to process real discs in Amiga or Atari format, with the appropriate hardware extensions. To use it, you need the FloppyBridge plugin, which in turn requires additional hardware (amiga-news.de reported). Now he has released version 1.0.1.0 of the software. Changes:
- Fixed disabling "auto-detect com port" being ignored
- Better support for hard disk image files larger than 4G (some partitions got ignored before)
- Upgraded to use the new ADFLib v0.9
- Changed error handling when reading from disks to include the Always Ignore option
- Added Amiga PFS3 file system support (this was a real PITA!)
Editorial update, 12 June 2024 (nba): Our original news article stated that no special hardware is required to process physical Amiga disks. That is not accurate. The FloppyBridge plug-in is required, which in turn requires DrawBridge, Greaseweazle or Supercard Pro hardware. The article has been updated accordingly.

Background: The Amiga 8 sprite myth
In a recent article Edwin van den Oosterkamp corrects the misconception, which in his opinion is still widespread today, that a programmer has to resort to tricks on the Amiga in order to be able to display more than 8 sprites on the screen.

Action-Adventure: 2nd June update of "Castlevania AGA"
Dante Mendes has released another June update (amiga-news.de reported) for his conversion of Konami's NES action adventure Castlevania, originally called "Akumajou Dracula", which fixes some problems:
- a problem with screen transitions after a continue in world 3
- the "hang on screen bottom edge instead of falling" glitch that happened sometimes
- a problem with Dracula going offscreen at the final battle
As the author writes, the feedback so far has been very positive. However, Castlevania is still a little too easy. He will continue to work on it.

Amiga emulator: Amiberry 5.7.2 and 6.3.2 (preview), (update)
Amiberry is an Amiga emulator for ARM-based single-chip systems like the Raspberry Pi, the Odroid XU4 or the Tinkerboard from ASUS, which brings some newly developed features like a "WHDLoad-Booter" or support for controller configuration using RetroArch. For example it is used in the Workbench distribution AmiKit for the Raspberry Pi 4/400.
New versions have now been released: version 5.7.1 is recommended for ARM devices (like the Raspberry Pi) and Version 6.3.1 (preview) for x86 and generally faster boards (ARM included). Both versions offer numerous new features, bug fixes and improvements.
The Preview 6.x will become the new "stable" flatpak available. This will help with the limitations of the Flatpak system regarding "stable" vs "beta" versions, since you cannot use both of them at the same time (you have to switch). Having Preview as the "stable" version, will help with people trying to use it in faster boards, like the SteamDeck, with minimum hassle.
Update: (22:04, 06.06.24, dr)
Today version 5.7.2 and version 6.3.2 (preview) have been released.

Amiga Kit: Final Writer 7 pre-installed on A600GS
Press release:
Final Writer has been in put back into active development over recent years (amiga-news.de reported).
Version 7 will soon will make it's debut pre-installed on the A600GS computer.
Final Writer is a famous word processor for the Amiga computer originally developed by SoftWood in the mid 1990s. It rapidly developed a significant loyal fan base amongst the Amiga community.
In 2015 it was purchased by Timothy Deters and put back into development after a 20 year hiatus. A large investment of work has been carried out implementing a new spell checker compatible with Open Office dictionaries, RTG fixes, FTP, IPP PDF and Turboprint printing.
AmigaKit Ltd and Timothy Deters are pleased to announce that a special edition of Final Writer 7 will be
pre-installed on the A600GS alongside it's other updated applications of OctaMED 8, PPaint 7.4 and
Directory Opus 4.
Final Writer can be started from AmiBench, the desktop environment and will open on a 1080P screen.
Final Writer 7 Special Edition is fully functional with the exception of the Spell Checker module which will be
offered to A600GS users as an optional paid upgrade.
Matthew Leaman, MD of AmigaKit Ltd commented on the collaboration: "We are very pleased to work with
Timothy bundling the brand new edition of Final Writer on the A600GS low cost hardware platform. Final
Writer is popular and much loved Amiga word processor. A significant amount of hard work has gone into
bringing this application back to our community to the credit of Timothy and his developers. New versions
of Final Writer complementing OctaMED and Personal Paint represents the renewal of Amiga applications."
Timothy Deters, owner of Final Writer added: "I'm happy to have come to an agreement with AmigaKit to
include Final Writer with their system. I’d like to thank the developers who worked on this project and have
been instrumental to its completion."
The A600GS computer system is due for launch in the second quarter of 2024.

Emulator: WinUAE 5.3.0
The Amiga emulator WinUAE has been released in version 5.3.0. Changes:
New emulated RTG boards
- CyberVision/BlizzardVision PPC. 2D only, 3D is not implemented. (Permedia 2)
- GVP EGS 110/24. (INMOS G364)
- Graffity. (Cirrus Logic CL-GD5428)
- Merlin, includes support for configurable serial number used by ProBench (Tseng ET4000W32)
- oMniBus (Tseng ET4000AX or ET4000W32)
- Rainbow III (INMOS G360)
- Visiona (INMOS G300)
New features/updates
- Prometheus FireStorm PCI bridge emulation
- Release raw input devices when GUI is open (except during input Test/Remap) or when debugger window is active. Allows Windows shortcut keys like Win+E to work without need to unfocus the window.
- Added Misc panel option to disable default on screen keyboard gamepad button 4 mapping.
- Some uae-configuration (and other similar) debugging logging messages automatically opened the console window. Now only entering debugger will open it.
- Added “Always on (Fixed only)” sound filter option. This enables A500 fixed filter but never enables “led filter”. (A1200 does not have fixed filter, only “led” filter)
- Replaced old Windows 2000 compatible Windows clipboard handling with newer, simpler and more reliable method introduced in Vista.
- Allow also 68020+ CPUs to fetch instruction words from custom chipset space. Only if more compatible is set. If some program really wants to do something weird like execute code located in AGA palette registers.
- Lightpen/gun cursor in any edge of screen: lightpen/gun not pointing at the screen = position can’t be read by the program.
- Statefile shortcut keys now select current config file name as a base statefile name (for example, if “test1.uae” config file is loaded, SHIFT+END+0 will save statefile as “test1.uss”. Quickstart mode config still uses original default “default.uss”)
- Both “SaveImage” (automatically created ext adf when write-enabling non-writable image like ipf) file extension variants are now detected automatically when checking if file exists. Paths panel SaveImage mode option now only affects generated file name when new saveimage is created.
- Added LDP-1450 laserdisc player OSD font emulation. Fixes laserdisc arcade game Platoon (Nova) previously missing “YOU’RE HIT!!” messages. (All OSD graphics are generated by Amiga except this message!)
Bugs fixes
- Fixed XT based Bridgeboards non-working floppy drive emulation, broke during 5.1 DraCo updates (wrong density detection)
- Serial port data receive was unreliable. Loopback serial port mode didn’t work in fast CPU modes.
- CD32 FMV video image size and positioning was weird in most scaled modes.
- Exclusive fullscreen and RTG resolution switch (RTG resolution switch to another RTG resolution without switch to native mode and back) didn’t change fullscreen resolution.
- Some ECS programmed modes (for example SuperPlus) had first visible line blanked.
- Fixed corruption in some “weird” programmed modes, introduced in 5.0 betas.
- Some hardware emulated RTG boards had flickering colors during horizontal panning (>8 bit modes only)
- Fixed ECS Denise superhires mode hires sprite pointer strange odd/even horizontal movement.
- Fixed pre-KS 1.2 HDF/directory filesystem boot. Broke long time ago.
- Multi-monitor active state was not fully reset when system was hard reset. (Multimonitor window was open -> hard reset -> window didn’t open anymore again)
- If x86 bridgeboard SVGA and also other hardware emulated RTG board was active and END+F9 was used to switch monitors: both monitors’ output was drawn in same window, causing corrupted graphics and possibly also crash if monitor sizes were too different.
- It was not possible to write and read ECS/AGA genlock transparency bit in color registers. Was broken long time ago.
- Delay ALG LDP seek complete status reply slightly. Fixes laserdisc arcade game Platoon (Nova) few second hangs.
- Los Justicieros (Zorton Brothers) laserdisc arcade game left holster hooked up correctly. (Was stuck active previously)

Reverse Engineering: Aira Force 0.6.1 for Windows, Linux and macOS
"Aira Force" is a tool for reverse engineering Amiga 680x0 software. It allows binaries to be disassembled and investigated (preview video).
The primary goal of this project is to provide a graphical user interface on top of the excellent ira reassembler to accelerate the workflow.
Aira Force implements reassembly using the ira disassembler and the vasm assembler. Ira transforms the source executable or raw binary into assembly language source code, then vasm assembles the source code. The output binary should be identical (or equivalent) to the input binary.
This process allows the user to analyse and annotate the source code efficiently, before make any required changes to the generated disassembly and building a patched binary. It may be useful for fixing bugs, adding features, optimising the code, or academic software archeology. Features:
- Disassemble Amiga executables (hunk Load Modules)
- Disassemble raw Amiga binaries, e.g. bootblocks, non-DOS programs
- Interactively convert disassembly to code, data or text
- Rename and add labels
- Add comments and banners
- Define pointers and equates
- Efficient code navigation
- Tools to search for potential pointers, equates and code
- Live Analysis using 68000 emulator to aid understanding
- In-built Amiga documentation (custom chipset, OS)
- Menu and keyboard driven UI
- Runs on Windows, Linux and macOS (sorry, no Amiga version)
- Hex viewer
- Reassemble disassembled code and compare against source
- Dockable windows and multi-viewports (native OS windows) with Dear ImGui
The tool is currently pre-ALPHA and not all features are implemented yet.

Video: Installing a new network printer on MorphOS
'jPV' is a very active MorphOS developer, but with his software projects such as the image processing software RNOEffects or the MUI-based SFTP/FTP(S) client RNOXFER he mostly supports all Amiga systems. As he writes, it had been quite a while since he had dealt with the printer problem under MorphOS. As he had just bought a new printer - a Xerox B230 printer - he had to deal with drivers and network support under MorphOS again and recorded his results in a video.
In it, he explains how to set up the netprinter default settings and add drivers for the new printing system (PPD) and for the old TurboPrint-based system. In order for a printer to be integrated as a network printer under MorphOS, it must currently support PostScript, PCL5, ESC/P-R or SPL2/SPLc.
As 'jPV' explained to us, the new printing system in MorphOS is great because it supports all the new printer features: the printer settings GUI is created according to the provided PPD file, so you can change all the options available in any printer in MorphOS.

Blog: Building an Amiga PSU for upgraded Amigas
As Andrew 'LinuxJedi' Hutchings writes, many users use Meanwell power supplies as a replacement for the ones supplied with the Amiga. Usually the 50W variants like the RPT-60B would be used because it fits well into an original Amiga power supply. In the first part of his report, Hutchings investigates whether a 75W power supply can also be used for heavily upgraded Amigas.
In his second blog post, he reports on corresponding tests and some improvements.

Beat 'em Up: Update of Final Fight Enhanced
In late January, developer 'Prototron' released its improved version of Capcom's Final Fight written in machine language (amiga-news.de reported). Now some small fixes, a new move and a new music track have been added.
An overview of the changes:
- added new music to the elevator stage
- added guy and Maki's "off the wall jump"
- fixed a bug that crashed the game when Belger was killed with a regular punch
- removed some superfluous collision checks from Belger in an attempt to fix the stall bug
- some minor animation fixes, plus checks added to prevent some bugs that didn't halt the player during level transitions
The developer points out that the realisation is explicitly a private, non-commercial project. An ECS or AGA Amiga with 2MB Chip RAM and 512KB Fast RAM is required.

Turn-based strategy: Bugfix update May 2024 for "Settle the World"
Christian 'TheoTheoderich' Wiegel writes about his recently published update:
"The bugfix update is finished and is recommended for everyone who is still playing on the April 2024 version.
In addition to fixing bugs, the movement system of units has been reworked.
Units can now move a little more, and the player should now receive the message about too few movement points much less frequently.
Furthermore, Settle the World can now be played completely in the German language.
This also lays the technical basis for additional translations into other languages.
Of course, the game still contains bugs or features that do not yet work properly.
Settle the World is far from finished...but with this bugfix update it is much more playable than ever before.
I would be very happy to receive feedback from players about this update. The amount of work involved in creating this update was really enormous.
As always, Settle the World can be downloaded free of charge from the project page."
