"Magic Engine" port for AmigaOS?
Steffen Häuser wrote:
I had discussed with the author of "Magic Engine", the best PC Engine emulator, an Amiga version. He answered to me that he'd do one "if enough people would ask for one, right now only a dozen of people have done so". His email address is: dmichel@easynet.fr. Amiga Inc.: New Executive update
Following the title link you can find the latest Executive update by Bill McEwen. Some new products are announced, among others several "Game Packs" for Smartphones and PocketPCs. These products will be distributed obviously via big retailer groups in the USA and in England. Furthermore it is explained why the Amiga Inc. bureaus couldn't be reached (they moved to other rooms):

Bill McEwen - November 2, 2002
Greetings One and All:

What a great weekend is in store for Amiga and those attending the World of Amiga, and for those of you not attending I am sure that you will be pleased with the progress that we have made as a company towards shipping new products.

As you may remember from our last update we have broken up the company into two separate units. We have the desktop team focusing their attention on the AmigaOne and OS 4.0, and we have the Mobile Team who is focusing their attention on Amiga Anywhere and the content creation and distribution on the various products and platforms that we support.

These changes and the amazing hard work is now ready to be shown and announced to all of you. Not only are you going to see new products, but we have been able to sign up some pretty heavy hitters with regards to new distribution and new retail availability of these new products.

The Desktop team is focused on new products and services for the Amiga community, and the Mobile team is focused on products and services that are for the extended Amiga community, with our initial offerings targeted at the Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and the SmartPhone. Our first customer for the SmartPhone was announced with Sendo as our partner for their Z100 phone, and now you will read about our next offering for PocketPC and PocketPC phone edition below.

Now we can begin the transformation from a development company to a company shipping products that you are able to go out and purchase for yourselves.

With the above mentioned, here we go:
  1. The office is moving and we will have the new address, and contact information up in the next week. So there is no need to worry about what is happening with the office, the change has been good for us. We needed to move into an area that is closer to the services and to the companies that we are working with.
  2. AmigaOne is ready to fly, and I have attached the news from Eyetech here with this update. So congratulations to all and the community for your new Amiga hardware.
  3. OS 4.0 is almost complete, and the Hyperion team is working very hard to get everything ready. They were delayed by having to complete some low-level work on the AmigaOne, and with their work completed they are ready to crank out the last remaining bit of work to provide a stellar achievement and package.
  4. There will be some announcements coming in the next couple of weeks from third parties who are now creating versions of their software for OS 4.0 and I have agreed not to steal their thunder but will have them make their own announcements first and then we will carry them on our site after they have made them.
  5. Amiga Games Pocket Paks will be available around the Thanksgiving holidays through several resellers in the US and in England, including CompUSA and mmO2 in England. Yes, what you are reading is correct. Amiga Games Pocket Paks volumes one and two will be shipping and ready this year at 29.95 each from several authorized retailers in the US and through mmO2 retail locations in England. These Pocket Paks include 4 game titles each, and we have two more packs following. This is great news as thousands of new customers here and in England are going to be able to experience Amiga Content on their Pocket PC, and Pocket PC Phone Edition devices.
  6. Amiga is also making available for release before Christmas Amiga SmartPhone Packs. These will be similar to the Pocket Paks, but targeted for the new SmartPhones coming out this year. As you know they will run on the new Sendo Z100, and they will be available for the new phones being offered by Orange also.
There are several more product announcements and partnerships coming in the next few weeks, but as mentioned before until it is real and ready, we will wait. So some very big news with the readiness of the AmigaOne and OS 4.0 within the last 10% of completion, and the availability of Amiga content being sold through National retailers in the US and England, I would have to say that we have been very busy indeed.

So again I thank you for your patience and support, and now the next steps in our development begins. The transformation from development of products to shipment of products, has begun. I am really looking forward to the next grouping of announcements, and product shipments.

Keeping the faith, and keeping it moving forward,

Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team (ps) (Translation: wk)

Eyetech: AmigaOneG3-SE and AmigaOne-XE Earlybird Systems now on sale!
Press release: We're there at last. Since the previous update to the AmigaOne section over 6 months ago the AmigaOne boards have been in the hands of our developers, and as a result of their feedback, the original firmware which we were to have shipped with the board (by Softex) has been replaced by specially adopted PPCBoot code. That, and identifying - and fixing a small problem with the Articia northbridge chip - have resulted in us holding back shipments of the consumer version of the AmigaOneG3-SE. That is until now!

During this period work has also continued with the AmigaOne-XE design (which has replaceable cpu modules). This design is now ready to go into production alongside the AmigaOneG3-SE. And perhaps the best news of all is that the G4 cpu is now available in moderate quantities, on acceptable delivery and price terms such that we are now able to offer a G4-based AmigaOne-XE at the same time as our public launch of the AmigaOneG3-SE.

The upshot is that we are taking orders for both the 600MHz G3-based AmigaOneG3-SE, and the 800MHz G4-based AmigaOne-XE, starting at the WoA-SE show on 2nd November 2002 - for delivery before Christmas (and, yes, for the cynics out there, we really do mean Christmas 2002!). A 700MHz G3 (750FX cpu) version of the AmigaOne-XE will be made available - at reduced cost - early in 2003.

But what about OS4 I hear you say - is that now ready? OS4 is now highly advanced, but no, is not currently ready for shipping, largely because Hyperion have had to divert a considerable amount of their time and effort in sorting out the AmigaOne's PPCBoot firmware. Our best estimate is that OS4 for the AmigaOne will ship early in 2003.

So why order an AmigaOne now? Well over the last six months we have had overwhelming demand from both dealers and individuals to ship the AmigaOne hardware - both boards and pre-built systems - now, together with LinuxPPC and UAE, in advance of OS4 being available. In addition this 'Earlybird' offer this also helps us spread the testing, assembly and despatch operations of the AmigaOne boards and systems over a number of weeks, which in turn helps us keep our own costs in check. So, in return, we are offering all users who wish to take up this 'Earlybird' offer a free, registered, copy of OS4 for the AmigaOne as soon as it becomes available. The Earlybird 'free OS4' offer represents a saving of around 12% on an AmigaOneG3-SE motherboard

This of course will not suit everybody, and if you want a switch-on-and-go AmigaOne system then this Earlybird offer is not for you. In this case we're afraid that you have a few more weeks to wait. However if it does suit you then don't delay - this offer is for boards and systems ordered up to and including 31st December 2002 or when OS4 becomes available, whichever comes first. Thereafter OS4 will become a separately chargeable item

As for prices, these have been revised to reflect currency movements since they were originally announced last March, particularly the weakness of the US dollar. Your local dealer will have the local currency prices for the AmigaOne outside the UK and the Eurozone. However the suggested prices in Europe - in UKP and Euro's - are as follows:

Board CPU UKP Euro
AmigaOneG3-SE G3 750CXe@600MHz 360.00 580.00
AmigaOne-XE G3 750FX@700MHz 450.00 725.00
AmigaOne-XE G4 7451@800MHz 500.00 800.00

These prices exclude local taxes, shipping and (apart from the Earlybird offer) OS4.

As far as complete systems are concerned, your local dealer will be able to provide quotations for standard and custom built configurations. Sample prices and configurations for systems which we ourselves offer in the UK are here.

Below is a table listing the comparative features of the AmigaOneG3-SE and the G3 and G4 versions of the AmigaOne-XE.

For the duration of WOASE, I'll be offering rc-ftpd registration for the reduced price of £10, instead of the usual $20 (£13 + commision).

As I'm feeling nice, and am completely broke (petrol and entrance money only), while I'm at WOASE people will be able to register rc-ftpd in cash, in pounds, and in person. I'll take their details and give them a receipt, they'll get the personal keyfile when I get home and email them out :-)

The World's First 32-bit Game Console?
This is not exactly burningly current news, but it is meaningful in an historical context. On my foraging for exotic game consoles I bumped into a very interesting Fujitsu product, the FM Towns Marty.

Fujitsu sold a lot of FM Towns PCs in the late 80s. At some point back then, they decided to develop a game console, and the FM Towns Marty came from that. The Marty was equipped with a 386 at 16 MHz, later there was a 486 version. It also had 2 megs of RAM. For storage there was a CD-ROM drive and a 3.5 inch floppy drive. For the graphics there were special custom chips which made 256 colors from a HiColor palette possible.

But the most interesting thing is: Marty was introduced in 1991! So the CD-32 loses its title as the first 32-bit console in the world to the Fujitsu Marty. By the way Marty may also be the second console to come with a CD-ROM drive (after the PC-Engine).

Because of the close compatibility to the FM Towns PCs there were also a lot of games available, but there were also specialized Marty games, including versions of the Lucas Arts classics Zak McKraken and Monkey Island, and I would guess that these were the best versions of these games, what with 256 colors and not the grisly MIDI music found in the PC version.

Pictures of the FM Towns Marty may be viewed here and here.

Because Marty was not officially sold outside Japan it's difficult to come by information on it. So I suppose the CD-32 could also claim to be the world's first 32-bit game console. (ps) (Translation: dm)

TurboCalc Going Open Source?
There's about a fifty percent chance that TurboCalc will go open source.

Motivated by the free release of AWeb and other programs, I wrote TurboCalc author Michael Friedrich a couple weeks ago, to ask if he might entrust TurboCalc to another programmer or programming group for further development.

Observation: TurboCalc is a spreadsheet (table calculation) program, such as Lotus 1-2-3 (tm) or Excel (tm) for PCs, or MaxiPlan (tm) for the Amiga.

I got an answer the day before yesterday (excerpt):

Subject: RE: Open Source TurboCalc
Date: Tue, 29 Oct 2002 08:40:51 +0100
...
the idea of open source sounds good, but I am not so sure if others would enjoy working with my code:

300,000 lines of sparsely commented assembler code is not going to be easy to read, even I had some problems with it :-)
....
I'll write you again.
Cordially, Michael

His comments so far. Certainly he will want to confer with Stefan Ossowski of GTI.

To raise some question (and spur discussion):
  • What do past, present (and eventually new) TurboCalc users think of using a further developed TurboCalc? Please don't write a list of requirements of WHAT needs to be improved or added. You'll get a chance to express these comments!

  • Are there programmers who are CAPABLE (this genre is not the simplest) and who WANT to develop Turbocalc further? I'll do what I can to help and encourage as a Betatester from the start.
I'll be happy to hear sincere comments and discussion. (ps) (Translation: dm)

RP-Online: Philips don't want to tolerate problems with copyprotected music CDs
»Some copy protected music CDs don't work with several CD or DVD players. If a note about that is missing at the cover this is a fault. Customers might bring in that case the CD back to the dealer and demand their money back.
The Philips company, the inventor of the CD technique and licenser for "Compact Discs", doesn't want to tolerate this fault anymore. Philips manager Gijs Wirtz said to "Computerbild": "CDs, which engender problems by replaying them do not fulfill the rule for a Compact Disc. A real CD should work with every device. Even with CD ROM drives, DVD and car CD players."«

The website of one of the oldest scene parties at all, THE PARTY, was put online with an new design today. The Party is held, like every year, from December the 27th to December the 29th in central Denmark at the congress center in Aars. Unfortunately there is only little left from that scene spirit of the first years. The Party became more a meeting point for gamers and those, who only want to fill up their hard drives via network. Those who are atracted by the prizes (at least EUR 1000 for the 1st prize at the mixed double demo competition) and the professional organisation should have a view to the new homepage. Event: Radwar birthday party in early November in Heinsberg
At November the 9th 17 years ago the C64/Amiga group Radwar was foundeed and for that score the boys from Heinsberg like to go wild and party once again! Mws, Arnd, Crazy & Co. have gained some attention with well organized scene parties during the recent years. This year it is again that you leave your own computers at home because it's a party for the people not for their equipment. It's partytime! (ps) (Translation: ub)

Meeting: With the Hack Train to the 19th Chaos Communication Congress

Chaos Computer Club meets annually between Christmas and New Year's at the Chaos Communication Congress. The 19th CCC (19C3) occurs from 27th to 29th December, 2002 in Berlin, Germany at the House at Köllnischen Park. The Hack Train to Congress starts the morning of 26th December, 2002 in Mainz, comes up along the Rhein, through the Ruhr, and reaches Berlin. The return trip is on the 30th. The whole thing is only going to happen however, when 200 people sign up (85 euros round trip). On that account, everyone who wants to come is asked to sign up (non-binding) at http://zug.verbrennung.org. The deadline is the first week in November!

The train from the RHEB comes through Mainz - Köln - Düsseldorf - Bochum - Bielefeld - Hannover - Berlin, and will consist of two cars with about 100 seats. Further stops along the way are no problem, just say so in advance.

The Chaos Communication Congress is a three day congress about technology, society and Utopia. The congress offers lectures and workshops on a range of topics concerning Information Technology, computer security, Internet, Cryptography, and the critically creative handling with technology, and discourse over the effects of technological development on society.

ADA: Update of the 20th of October, 2002

ADA, the Amiga Demo Archive searchable databank has placed online the following new demos:

After Guardian Dragon in the previous update, yet another release of The Forces of the Pyramids, Kefrens (the 4th Kefrens production on A.D.A.). This time a cool slideshow called Masterpieces from R.W.O. Nice presentation, good tune by Laxity and some cool pictures... Released somewhere in 1992 I think...

Another new group appears on A.D.A., Limited Edition (LED) with a demo called Mind Abuse. Released at Assembly 1996 where the demo ended on 5th place. Hardcore tune, fast effects and lots of colors ...

A very famous demo from French group Complex, Origin was released at The Party 1993 and won. A very cool intro, classic tunes by Clawz and nice visuals make this a very cool production all around. Check it out.

Event: Pictures of visit to "BeGeistert" in Düsseldorf
Here is a selection of the pictures that have been taken today by Petra Struck on the BeOS event BeGeistert. Mainly, of course, pictures of the Pegasos/MorphOS and Walker presentations, which btw may be repeated on Sunday morning if required. An extensive report will follow.

Ulrich 'Scholly' Scholz (left) "guards" the entrance ...

... and collects the entrance fee of 10 Euro per visitor.

Most people are currently attending a BeOS demonstration ...

... thus the room looks nearly deserted.

While waiting for Nicholas, I have already shot a picture of the MorphOS surface. The windows' design is variable and, thanks to MUI, customisable.

Gert is having BeOS explained to him at length :-)

T-Shirts of all sizes and all BeGeistert event vintages are waiting for buyers, three of the old vintages can be bought for 25 Euro, the current "BeGeistert 2002" is 13 Euro.

Bertrand Presles and Sébastien Lokhamkhouak of Thendic France

Here a glimpse of the Pegasos' inside

The complete system

Nicholas Blachford of Thendic France

(This picture in 1280 x 960)
A further look at the Pegasos' inside

The Walker! Nicholas has given it a try, and partly even managed to make it work!

The Walker's backside really strongly resembles a vacuum cleaner, the connectors however reveal that there is a complete computer with all the bits and pieces hiding inside.

Here two - to my knowledge never before published - drawings ...

... of Walker prototypes in a tower (well, rather a giant tower). The original pictures will be submitted to us later.

I have seldomly visited events where the empty pizza boxes were so neatly stacked for disposal!

Here now a couple of pictures from the BeOSers' room ...

Discussions here, object lesson there ...

... naturally, the pizza order is also important!

Gert is looking forward to dinner at a Chinese restaurant ...

... and I, too, am in the best of moods, for I have seen much and, obviously, I am totally delighted. Till next time with "Petra on Tour" ;-)

Music/Sound Expert Sought for Crossfire II

Dreamworlds Development is looking urgently for a music/sound expert who can also add music to animations, in order to prepare Crossfire II. The animations are in MPEG format or if needed in single pictures on a CD. The result of adding the sound should therefore be a timed sample in a common format

There is not going to be much monetary reward involved (because of the overall market situation). The best case scenario would be approximately 100 Euros when the project is published. You can get further details by expressing your interest in an email.

Here's an excerpt: »Whoever has called an Amiga his own will be dazzled by the mere mention of the Bitmap Brothers. This development team created Amiga games of an unforgotten radiance. One of them, Speedball 2, was recently introduced in a version for Nintendo's handheld Game Boy Advance.«

Soms3D Seeks New Partners

Soms has been on ice for a long time because there was a lot of programming to do. This made us really think about things. We decided not to make a 2D adventure, but rather a realtime 3D online role playing game.

To do this we already have a 3D programmer and our first internal beta version. The capabilities of Soms3D will be made public at a later date (assuming our new webpage is online). The adventurers will reach, more or less, a common solution. And naturally all that one may do online must also be doable in an online game.

To reach our goals we still need a bit of help. We are looking for:

  • A musician who can deliver his music in MOD or MIDI form.
  • A programmer who knows his way around Online-Programming.
  • Because Soms3D is based on PPC it would be better when partners have a PPC, especially when programming.
  • Applications or Inquiries go to Sylvio K..

Game 'Armada' released on Aminet

Armada is a round-based game for two to five players. It is a version of a game formerly played with paper and colored pencils. To start off each player places his sea port on the map. As the game progresses players select their ships and attack opposing ships. It depends on the distance and a roll of the dice if the opposing ships are sunk.

Armada-Homepage is here, and here is the Aminet download link: Armada.lha. The author would like to hear some feedback about the game and its homepage.

Frank Wille

Frank Wille: vbcc version 0.8 und vlink version 0.8 (Update)
Frank Wille has updated two of his programs. The first is vbcc version 0.8, a highly optimized portable ISO C compiler, available in versions for Amiga and MorphOS. The compiler supports ISO C as defined in ISO/IEC 9899:1989 and part of the new standard ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (C99).

Furthermore has Frank Wille released version 0.8 of the linker vlink. vlink is a portable linker written in ANSI-C for several object file formats. The source code should compile under AmigaOS as well as under Unix without any problems. For now are supported: AmigaDos, EHF, ELF32-PowerPC-BigEndian, ELF32-PowerUp, a.out (NetBSD68k, SunOS010, SunOS020, NetBSDi386, PCi386, VOBJ), as well as Motorola S-Record and Raw-Binaries via linker scripts.

Update 14.10.2002:
vbcc was'nt written only by Frank Wille, but also by Volker Barthelmann. (ps) (Translation: wk)

We thank the participating companies Vesalia, bplan and MorphOS who made it possible for us to show the Pegasos. On the one hand we didn't want to put the beta testers at a disadvantage but on the other hand we wanted to show the computer to the publicity and we believe that we succeeded. Because of an article in Bremen's biggest newspaper on Sunday we had 5432 visitors on both days. Via the U.d.N. came interested users who wanted to see the Pegasos. more ... (ps) (Translation: wk)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Chris Hodges (Poseidon USB)
Many users considered the name "Chris Hodges" a concept since the mid-nineteen nineties, since Chris (in addition to writing demos and tools) also authored PD games like "Tubes."

Most recently with the introduction of the USB cards "Subway" and "Highway" developed by Michael Böhmer, most users will again consider this concept, because Chris has authored "Poseidon USB," making it possible for Amiga users to use standard USB hardware.

In the interview with Amiga Arena he discusses how this development came about, the concept behind "Poseidon USB," and what more great stuff users may expect in the future.

You'll reach the interview here in German and English. (ps) (Translation: dm)

BenderIRC: DCCCHAT Now With PGP

Cyborg writes in: Well, it took a while but BenderIRC is finally making progress again. The program components that were lost in the hard-drive crash have been fully restored, and it is now possible to add a PGP-encoded communication over the Internet with BenderIRC's DCCCHAT.

At this time it's unfortunately still not possible to comfortably go from BenderIRC to the PGP-DCCCHAT, because a specialized CTCP command must be defined. Whoever would like to take part in this effort can let us know via email. Attention must be drawn to the fact that PGP2 and PGP5 are both supported but must be separated.

For some time now a help system has been on the BenderIRC website. It is for the purpose of simplifying the reporting of bugs, so that more people will send us bug reports. The future plans are to eliminate some of the smaller bugs and then add the long-awaited configuration/installation tool.

Official Amiga and Retro Computing 2002 Website on-line
Today the official website for the German Amiga exhibition of this year is on-line. Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computer organizes this fair, which will take place on 7th and 8th December 2002 in the Eurogress Aachen. Thus Schönfeld breaks the good old tradition to let the exhibition take place in Cologne but Aachen is a city worth seeing, and the proximity to the Benelux countries is reliably a large advantage. Refrained from it the organizer gets ready to break with another tradition since he would like to turn around the trend of the last years after, and attract more visitor than before.

The current website is only a preversion of the final one. It will be filled up with contnent bit by bit. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Amiga Society: Schlachtfeld page updated and Status
From the Amiga Society site:
"The Schlachtfeld page has received a new design. The contents is not that far yet, but the first graphics for a second level can already be seen.

Over the next weeks, some submenus etc. will be added to the page and some more information will be provided.

Possibly the page will also get its own domain soon.

We still hope to have at least a beta of Phase I (with the old graphics) until the show in December.

According to current estimation of the situation, Phase I will probably not get over the beta stage.

The graphics of Phase II have advanced that much already that a parallel development of code and graphics is beginning to make sense." (sd) (Translation: cb)

Amiga Arena: Hilt II - German Language Disk Version Online

There's now a stand-alone German disk version of the game Hilt II. In the future you will just need the "mission disk" to download new missions.

The missions "Reactor" and "Catacomb" have recently been made available on the Hilt II page (mission disk). Hilt II may be played from the hard-drive or directly from the floppy disk! Please pay close attention to the notes in the separately downloadable German instructions.

Amiga Speed Is One Year Old

Simon Neumann writes: Amiga Speed is celebrating its first birthday. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all the Speed testers for their help and all visitors for their feedback. You've made it possible for Amiga Speed to improve and expand. That should also continue into the future, so I'm asking you to keep giving me suggestions for improvement and your reactions. This is the only way Amiga Speed can continue and meet the desires of its visitors.

Naturally there are once more new reviews to pore over. Simply take a look under Payback und Q***e.
