Iwin

Iwin: product specifications of A510MP and A1010MP online
At AmiUpdate, the entry in the Sun Dealer Catalog is considered sufficient proof for the existence of Iwin. Here's the entry.
At ANN, there are two more interesting postingsabout the subject: 1. The manufacturer of the tower casings has been found, it is the company Antec. 2. Jeffrey D. Webster explains in a posting to c.s.a.m. why it isn't that hard to get added to the Sun Dealer Catalog.
Comment about the technical specification: It reads all too well. You cannot run the bus system with a 68060-50, however. You will never get the speed to the PCI bus to transport the data fast enough for the pixel rates of the gfx card. Not to speak of AGP. I consider that impossible with a 68060 CPU. A company without Amiga experience can never implement this stuff. For this, the subject is far too complicated. And how is all this intended to run without Amiga chipset? more ... (ps)

Bernhard Hembach dead
Attorney and bancruptcy manager Bernhard Hembach has died on August 20th at the age of only 55 by heart attack. Our feelings are with his family. Mr. Hembach managed the bancruptcies of Commodore and Escom, and by his casual approach did his part in keeping the Amiga alive. (ps)

Statement about the current status of the warpTrans project by WARP9
Full text translator for English-German, German-English (details at the title link). Since January 1999, a team based in Netherlands is working on the program.
Based upon a already finished dictionary the implementation has been possible at all. The language recognition is almost finished, and is unique so far on the Amiga in its high quality. An integration of this system into other applications is also possible. To bring the warpTrans project to a final version, the time until November should suffice.
Despite announcements, feedback of interested users has been sparse. While everybody is calling for new, innovative software... One ought to think that such a program deserved more attention. This does not seem to be the case. It seems like everything is already there and no one needs something new? (Full text - German - at title link). (ps)

AmigaOS 3.5 briefly presented on TV
In the (German) TV show "Neues", AmigaOS 3.5 was presented in a one minute report. Among others, the new HD-Toolbox was shown, which will support hard drives >4GB, SCSI and IDE. Aside from Internet funtionality and online manual, the Preferences were also shown. Although it wasn't a lengthy report, but it's great that the Amiga is seeing more and more media attention.
Thomas Nosutta wrote on the subject:
Since there have been a report about the Amiga as well as about the Computer Games Museum in Berlin, I wondered that the rest of the world would like to know more about it. So here are two links for those interested: 8-Bit-Nirvana (German) and Computer Games Museum. (ps)

Cracker group Digital Corruption: OS3.5 cracked?
Set aside the fact that you shouldn't use pirate copies at all (they are illegal, and severly harm the Amiga), we can only warn of this cracked version, since it contains some nice backdoors for sure (like those viruses that appeared on Aminet recently, which did send out eMails unnoticed). (ps)

In a posting to csam Iwin states that they will release further technical details on their website within the next two or three days, and that Martin Steinbach has agreed with Thomas Raukamp of the German "amigaOS" print magazine to make a presentation in Germany shortly before the official release date. Thomas confirmed the agreement.
Still, we stay very wary, we can still imagine this could be a well-done hoax, and will only be convinced otherwise when we have seen the promised machines in action. (ps)

Jason Kroll: BeOS Release 4.5
Thomas Wölflick writes:
I have found an interesting article in "Be Magazine" at www.bemagazine.com/articles/beos-4.5.html (title link). There, Jason Kroll writes about the BeOS Release 4.5 in whole, its chances and future.
Especially interesting was the honorable mention of Amiga in the paragraph before the last one. Here, he writes:
..."One impediment to development, and to users switching to BeOS, is that we don't know for sure how secure the future will be. For one thing, Amiga, supported by Gateway, is probably in cahoots with Transmeta, and based on the free Linux kernel, is about to make a monster reappearance, supposedly based on technologies we have never seen in home computers. How will BeOS fare against competition from the rebirth of the original multimedia machine?"...
Preliminary congratulations, fear of an undead, or how would you call it? (ps)

Fusion Preorder has to improve
Thomas Lorenz writes:
Source: Fusion-Mailinglist
At Blittersoft only 200 users have changed their "statement of interest" in FusionPPC into a "real" preorder. The preorders can be placed at the title link.
Since the given deadline of 60 days for project realisation to availability will only start when 500 real orders (level 2) are collected, all who stated their interest, and all who would like to see FusionPPC come true, should order at Blittersoft ASAP. Blittersoft has taken over managing the preorders, so this is the only place you should turn to for a preorder (and not directly to Microcode-Solutions).
Orders can be placed by snail mail, too; Blittersoft accepts EuroCheques. For other ways of payment contact Blittersoft by eMail. (ps)

amiga-news.de celebrates 1st anniversary
We have grown up and learned running. Yes, parents among you will know that babies usually learn running with 13-14 months, but we are of the quick type :-). Meanwhile amiga-news.de consists of a team of nine, all of which are working on the news enthusiastically and with fun. We have learned much this year, some ideas are implemented, others are waiting under the desk. Until we get "adult", there will surely be many news coming your way, in both meanings of the word.
For the statisticans among you, some data:
On August 13th, 1998, the first news was posted: "CU Amiga Magazine cancelled". Back then we had a great 200 readers per month. September 98 they were 1000, October 98 1800, November 98 2700, in December 98 5400, January 99 11,000, February 99 16,500, in March 99 even 23,900, in April 99 again a great increase to 31,900, in May 99 36,800, in June 99 37,200, in July 99 47,000, and this month we will surely reach 50,000 readers :-) We are very excited about this success, and will keep pressing it.
On this opportunity, we want to say a global thank you to all who contributed to this site one way or another. Special thanks goes to all the other news services; without them, collecting the news would be much harder. We are also very thankful to all the attentive Amiga users and developers supplying us with news by eMail.
We would be very happy about birthday greetings in our guestbook :-). (ps)

New Play16 (Eclipse Edition)
Thomas Wenzel writes:
While porting my audio software to 24-bit, the first thing to do was the ages-since-last-updated Play16. The new version 1.9, which has been completed yesterday, can now process 24-bit AIFF data. The playback, however, is still 16-bit. Next is an AHI-Record and AmigaAMP, and of course the AHI driver for the Prelude. As soon as the digital interface is available, the full resolution can be used with the appropriate equipment (external 24-bit converter). Play16 is available from play16.amiga.software.com (title link), and soon from Aminet. Aside from the expanded AIFF support, nothing much has changed however. There are more detailed error reports if you try to play back unsupported formats or compressions, and that's it. Please don't bombard me with eMails, what else weird features I should be implementing, I have no time for it :) I consider the project closed, and do only detail refining. (ps)

Amiga getting more and more media coverage
Heiko Krappmann writes:
In the issue of PC-Praxis before the last one, there has been an article about AmigaOS 3.5. The report was about technical details and the release date. The MCC was mentioned briefly, too.
The latest issue of the PC-Joker printed a small article about our Amiga, too, sounding like this: "Did you already know that Amiga is to release a new computer with Linux, appearing this year?"
At Giga, Michael Labiner stated once that they would possibly switch to Amiga if there would be enough games to fill an issue. The video is available from PC-Joker, issue 7/99, MPEG format. Also many VIPs are "coming out" as Amiga fans, like Oliver Kahn (German soccer pro) at Giga. He said he had an Amiga once, and is missing it :-). more ... (ps)

Heise: Hackermeeting hacked?
From the Heise article about the Chaos Communication Camp by the CCC:
The ports of the camp systems connected to the network have been scanned far and wide since Friday evening, to find the weak spot in the "enemy" system. The organisers had warned all "green" users to do Telnet sessions with encryption only, to make life not too easy for the password sniffers. But about 6:30 PM, the catastrophy happened: the systems suddenly denied any exchange of data with each other or internet. The Network Operation Center (NOC) at the campsite surrendered and issued a "Red Alert". Even in the early morning of Saturday, the NOC was still offline.

Mandrake was at Amiga
Mandrake, co-developer of the Window Manager for X (Enlightenment) was invited to a meeting at Amiga. Here his statement from his website:
Today I, raster, nettwerk, kainx, and chris dibona went over to amiga to have a little chat with Allen Havemose (VP of Engineering) and Richard Lipes (Director, Multimedia Services) of Amiga. We talked about a few interesting things. I promised I wouldn't say too much about what they told me on my web site, but they might be holding a couple of tricks up their sleeve yet. I also got to leave with a bunch of Amiga paraphanalia - which in and of itself is kinda cool. I don't know what all I can talk about q uite yet, but I'll find out. They were pretty impressed with enlightenment, which is cool - but we did make sure they realized it IS only beta (at best) code and we're not anywhere near done with it yet. We'll see where this goes from here. But I'm pretty excited about maybe working with them on a few things.
This is a repost, the original message had the links screwed up. (ps)

Carsten Schroeder Chris Heereman Christian Kemp Christoph Dietz
Conor Kerr Craig DeLahoy Dave Law Don Hicks

The objective of the AAC is to help us better plan the future of Amiga
through close communications with people who are viewed as leaders in the
Amiga community. The members of the AAC have all executed non-disclosure
agreements (NDAs), with Amiga and will have access to confidential
information regarding future products and plans. This allows Amiga to share
sensitive information with respected members of the Amiga community without
having to disclose our plans publicly.

The members of the AAC were selected to represent their different areas of
affiliation within the Amiga community - the Press, Developers,
Dealers/Distributors, and the User Group organizations. The AAC is
designed to provide a flow of information from the Community to the Amiga
management team and from Amiga back to the community. Each of the members
of the AAC will act as a conduit to the community and the areas that they
represent.

We held our first official meetings with the AAC in London and in Sacramento
with over 20 AAC members participate in these first official meetings. The
AAC was able to share with Amiga many of the desires, and needs of the
community. As we work towards the launch of the Next Generation Amiga the
input received by the AAC will help guide those decisions.

"We are excited to welcome the members of the AAC as active representatives
of the Amiga community and look forward to implementing many of the programs
suggested in the near future, stated Jim Collas, "together we will make a
difference in computing forever."

Rainboot 2.65 released / Original Windows98 Bootup for Amiga?
Andreas Falkenhahn writes:
 1) Rainboot 2.65 released:
On the Airsoft Softwair website, a new version of the famous multimedia bootup Rainboot has just been released. For the first time, the new version offers support for multiple background pics and other new features / improvements.
 2) An original Windows98 Bootup for Amiga?
That's possible now, of course simulated only :-) At the Airsoft Softwair website, the WindowsSimulator Bootconfig for Rainboot has been released. This looks almost 100% like the Windows98 original (start screen, cycle, desktop, icons, taskbar, sounds). A Windows98 startup is faked, leading to a rare Exception suggesting to rather use AmigaOS. The bootup is great for impressing PC friends, at least it worked for me. Rainboot 2.65 is required, since new features of this version are used. (ps)

Foundation

Foundation News
Two Foundation products have been announced for this year. First there'll be "Foundation: Directors Cut" which is a re-release of the original Foundation, containing version 1.25, supporting graphics cards, gouraud shading and more special effects. Regarding the very low price (£14.99) of the re-release this is the chance for everyone who "forgot" to buy this game 'til now.
The second one will be "Foundation Edge", which is Foundation, completely rewritten in portable C++ (which could mean a PPC version of Foundation) and a totally different interface. The Foundation's Edge Homepage is already online. More information will be available there by the end of the week.
Update News:
In the next days a new update will be released. Paul Burkey is working on version 1.25, which will be included on the CD "Foundation: Directors Cut". The support for Foundation and FoundationDC will be continued. more ... (ps)

Flightsimulator "Flight Gear" Is Open Source
Amiga game writers should have look at the titlelink, where source code of the flight sim "Flight Gear" can be found. A hardware accelerated MESA or Open GL is required, so this should be an ideal project for a Warp3D powered MESA PPC Amiga. (ps)

Amiga in K1 Reportage (German TV)
Robert Wahnsiedler writes:
Yesterday, about 1:00 AM, I stumbled across a repeat of "K1 - Die Reportage", and what did my tired eyes see in a report - an Amiga 4000. :) -.
It was about payment on internet by credit card, and how easy it is being cheated. They showed an interview with Evrim Serim (sp?), a long-standing Amiga user and co-author of the book Hackerland. It was briefly shown how easy it is for a "pro" to hack into a simple site, and read out the credit card data. The interview was made in his room, where he sat in front of an Amiga 4000, which was easily recognized by keyboard and desktop. :) The screen was not that much visible, but the great Boing ball sticking to the monitor :). Great advertising for insiders... :). (ps)
