Apollo team launched AROS-based operating system project
First the developer team of the Apollo-FPGA-Core used in the Vampire products did choose AROS as official operating system. After having had some problems with the free AmigaOS clone, the Kickstart-ROMs officially licenced from Cloanto were used. From around Apollo is also the Workbench distribution Coffin OS which includes illegal copies.
Obviously they now are going to tackle the problem at source: In a Activity Report it is told that on Github a Fork of AROS has been established - their "goal is to improve AROS 68k support and level up its compatibility with AmigaOS3 to the best state possible".
A logo already has been published on Github which also tells the name of the new fork of AROS: "Apollo OS". The code itself obviously has not been changed a lot although there is a first alpha version of the new system (download site).

The Apollo OS download was hosted by a one-click hoster. Apparently, the number of allowed downloads was limited and the Alpha release of the operating system is no longer available anymore. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Announcement: Tiny Bobble - a better 'Bubble Bobble' port
Tiny Bobble is done by the people who released Tiny Invaders und Tiny Galaga and is an attempt to create a port of the Arcade classic Bubble Bobble that is optimized for the Amiga 500 - instead of just porting the existing Atari ST version, as Firebird did with their commercial 1989 release.
'Tiny Bobble' is said to feature the following improvements over the original
Amiga game:
- 50 fps (instead of 25fps)
- 32 colors (instead of 16)
- 150 items (instead of 40?)
- Original screen height of 224 pixel (was only 200 pixel)
- Almost all sprite animations (had only ~20% of animations)
- Progress Screen (was not available)
- Animated Extend screen (was not animated)
- Big Score images (was not available)
- Single file (needed a disk)
- Animated intro (no bubbles were available)
- Animated Boss fight (was a still image)
- Multiple endings (hand only one ending)
The release of Tiny Bobble is planned for this month. (cg)

Amiga emulator: Amiberry 3.2-beta1
Amiberry is an Amiga emulator for ARM-based boards (like the Raspberry Pi, ASUS Tinkerboard, Odroid XU4, etc) that also offers a few unique features developed only for Amiberry, such as the WHDLoad booter and support for RetroArch controller mapping. Spray paint cans in the colors of classic computer models
retrohax.net is selling spray paint cans matching the coloring of various classic computer models. So far, the colors "C64C", "Amiga 500" and "Atari ST/XE" are available, more options are said to follow. Commercial Workbench distribution: Amikit XE for Vampire
Version 11 ("XE") of the commercial Workbench distribution Amikit is now also available in a dedicated 'Vampire edition'. The distribution is described as "fully compatible with the Vampire V2 core". But since the V4 core is still in active development, the Amikit developer points out there might be the occasional "weird behaviour or crash" on that version of the Vampire.
As usual, Amikit customers have to retrieve Kickstart ROM images, Workbench disks or CDs and a copy of the 'Picasso96' RTG system separately. At 50 Euros, the Vampire edition of Amikit is 20 Euros more expensive that the traditional version for emulator users on Windows, Mac OS or Linux. A CF card with Amikit 'Vampire Edition' preinstalled is available for 80 Euros. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Elektronic music: Creating Jungle/Hardcore tracks using a A1200 (video)
British producer and label owner Pete Cannon started his career in the electronic music business by creating tracks using Octamed 4 on an Amiga 1200. In a detailed demonstration for the Youtube channel "Sound on Sound", he shows how to use his A1200 - freshly dug out from his parents' shed - to create a Jungle track. The one difference being he's no longer using low quality samples generated using his Amiga or loaded from disk, instead he's controlling professional sample equipment from back in the day using MIDI. MorphOS celebrates 20 year anniversary
André Siegel from the MorphOS team reminds us in a morph.zone announcement, that the PowerPC based clone of AmigaOS has been available to the public for 20 years now: on August 2nd, 2000, the team initiated public Betatests. At that time, the target hardware was still an Amiga 1200, 3000 or 4000 with a PowerPC expansion from Phase 5 - the 'Pegasos' was first mentioned in December 2000. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Amiga emulator for Mac OS: vAmiga 0.9.10
Dirk Hoffmann's 'vAmiga' is a new, "user friendly" (quoting the developer) Amiga emulator that emulates a A500, A1000 or A2000 computer. Changes since our last news item:
- Added support for .zip and .gz files.
- The VERTB interrupt fired one cycle too late (Pygmy Projects - Extension demo)
- ECS Agnus failed if bitplane DMA was enabled in the middle of a raster line (Ghosttown - SushiBoyz).
- Denise is emulated correctly now if both the HAM bit and the DPF bit are set.
- Fixed a bug that sometimes caused disk DMA to be switched on too early.
- Fixed a bug in the TOD clock initialization code (Blast From The Past).
- Registers JOY0DAT and JOY1DAT returned wrong values if no mouse was connected.
- The CHK instruction didn’t work correctly with negative bounds.
- Fixed the operand write order of the CLR instruction.
- Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented the Copper to write into BPLxDAT.
- Added support for the Ricoh real-time clock.
- Added support for the ADZ and DMS file formats.
- vAmiga can load some encrypted Cloanto Roms now (a rom.key file is required).
- Fixed a bug which made it impossible to load snapshots if no default Rom was specified.
- Fixed a timing issue affecting shift instructions in byte addressing mode.
- Fixed a bug that sometimes allowed bitplane DMA to happen even if DDFSTRT was never hit.
- Writes to pointer registers may be dropped if DMA is in progress (Plasma Force - New stuff).

Arcade game: Atarenium Falcon (demo)
In 'Atarenium Falcon' (Video) the player has to collect pieces of coal and other items lying around in the screen-sized levels and then head for the exit. Jump'n Run: Smarty And The Nasty Gluttons
'Smarty And The nasty Gluttons' (Video) is a Jump'n Run that was intended for a commercial release in the early nineties but never finished due to the collapsing market. With help from members of the active Amiga scene, the original coder has now revamped his old code and added the missing functionality. Graphics and sounds had already been completed decades ago, which is why the full version of the game is now available for download.
'Smarty' requires an Amiga with at least one megabyte RAM and Kickstart 1.2 or newer. According to the developer, 'modest' efforts were put into making it compatable with newer Amiga setups. The source code for the game is going to be released this fall, a commercial release is planned aswell.

Reading Amiga disks on a PC: ADF Drive 1.110, ADF Copy 1.130
With the USB adapter 'ADF Drive' and its accompanying copy program 'ADF Copy', Amiga floppy disks can be read using a standard PC floppy drive under Windows, Linux or Mac OS. Since our last news item, both the adapter's firmware as well as the frontend were updated several times: Several bugs were fixed and the User Interface was redesigned. TF360: Prototype of a 68060 accelerator board in the CD32 (video)
The 'TF360' developed by Stephen Leary is an accelerator board for the Amiga CD32 which provides a slot for a 68060 processor as well as 128 MB Fast-RAM. A video now shows the prototype. Using an additional angle plug, providing a classic Amiga monitor port as well as a port for PS/2 keyboards, the card can be installed within the CD32.

Unreleased commercial game: 'Dragon Slayer' will be completed
'Dragon Slayer' is an arcade-adventure game similar to Barbarian (Psygnosis) in which the hero has to fight through hundreds of rooms in a fantasy setting. The game originally was meant to be released as commercial game in 1990 but was never completed.
Obviously one of the original developer is going to complete and release Dragon Slayer. The current state of the project is not clear, on the website of Indie Retro News there is an old excerpt of a magazine as well as a video with some scenes. In 1990 also a C64 port was planned of which for 30 years a playable preview has been available (video).

Selfmade project: 8-Bit sampler 'Open Amiga Sampler'
Sampling like in the year 1988: Under this motto Brendan Ratliff has published a detailed manual for making a parallel-port sampler for Amiga computers on Github. His 'Open Amiga Sampler' digitises in 8 Bit (mono), has a typical maximum sampling rate of about 52 Khz and offers an input amplifier with variable gain. Desktop Publishing: RNO Publisher for all Amiga systems
'RNO Publisher' created with Hollywood is a simple DTP application: The user creates one-page or multi-page documents and there can place text boxes, pictures and other graphic objects as well as links - the result then is exported to a PDF file. An example PDF created with the program is available on the website of the developer.
The program has the following features:
- Supports the most common page sizes in portrait and landscape modes
- Freely placeable text boxes, images, PDF links, and graphical objects
- PDF links can point to document pages or web links
- Supports base fonts that don't affect the file size
- Custom TTF fonts can be embedded into documents
- PDF outlines (table of contents) support
- User creatable page templates
- PDF exporting supports passwords and compression options
- Constrained mouse movement and resizing using qualifier keys
- Additional document saving and loading in its own format
- Drag & drop loading of documents, pictures, and text files
RNO Publisher is available for AmigaOS 3/4, MorphOS, AROS and WarpOS. It requires the GUI-Toolkit MUI as well as the external MUI classes texteditor.mcc.

Arcade classic: Super Wormy - The Worm-Like Snake 1.1
Unlike many other games, the levels in "Super Wormy" (video) are bigger than the screen. Therefore the screen is scrolled and the player is informed about his position by a little radar. A level editor also is included.
Changes in version 1.1:
- Now seems to work fine on Kick1.3.
- Now seems to work fine on 1MB CHIP and 1MB FAST (Still recommend A1200 though as is slower on ECS).
- Changed music and sfx routines to idrougge's blitz lib from phx's player.
- Levels after 11 didn't change colour.
- Level reached wasn't stored if the game was completed.
- Level 14 was impossible, glad I wrote an editor!
- Outro was too fast.
- Created icons for SuperWormy and WormyEditor (Something I always forget to do!).

AmigaOS 4: X11 environment AmiCygnix 1.6
Edgar Schwan's AmiCygnix is an Unix environment for AmigaOS 4. It is not an emulation but all programs has been compiled for AmigaOS 4 (screenshot). AmiCygnix provides a directory and data structure similar to an Unix installation.
Additional to other changes, updates and bug fixes, now version 2.24.32 of GTK+ is used. Therefore future software packages will require AmiCygnix 1.6.
New in AmiCygnix-Base:
- Update to version 2.24.32 of GTK+, the latest version of GTK+ 2. In addition to some new features, the drag 'n drop in GTK+ 2 applications now finally works. The corresponding programs have to be linked again. Programs like Rox-Filer or Gimp benefit greatly from this. Therefore, please pay attention to updates of these programs!
- Full support for Unix locale strings. So you can now select the country, the encoding and special variants in addition to the language. You can also select multiple locales. All drivers, all AmiCygnix tools and the X server have been revised for this. See the documentation "README.Language.pdf" in the directory "Cygnix:Docs"!
- With the following display drivers for the Workbench, the size of the window can now be reduced: workbench, workbench2, picasso96wb, picasso96wb2. The content can then be moved using a scroller (screenshot). This function can be deactivated via myX11Setup!.
- Support for version 3.16.3 of GnuTLS, the latest version of the SSL/TLS layer. Support for SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.3 is new. The Trusted Certificates included have also been updated. Problems with programs like NetSurf or Claws-Mail should be solved with it. However, the corresponding programs must be relinked.
- Support for LDAP through OpenLDAP 2.4.49. Is now integrated in libcurl and will also be used in Claws-Mail.
- Support for AISS in the menus of the Workbench display drivers. The size of the icons can be set using the "MenuImageSize" environment variable.
- Revised myX11Setup with improved help function. Thanks to Michael Christoph!
- Italian translation updated in many AmiCygnix scripts. Thanks to Samir Hawamdeh!
- New Spanish translation of the texts in the Workbench display drivers. Thanks to Javier de las Rivas!
- New catalog in Russian language for myX11Setup. Thanks to Eugene Sobolev!
- Fixed a problem when starting the AmiCygnix desktop via myX11Setup.
New in AmiCygnix-Tools:
- All GTK+ 2 applications are now linked with GTK+ 2.24.32. In addition to some new features, the drag 'n drop now finally works.
- The browser "NetSurf" is now linked with the latest version 3.6.13 of the SSL/TLS layer GnuTLS. This fixes problems with SSL connections.
- The program "ROX-Filer" is configured during installation so that it can be used as a replacement for the "idesk" desktop manager. Even if the porting of the program has not yet been completed (functions such as "copy / delete file" do not work), it is now much more usable with GTK+ 2.24.32. Just try it ;-). Aftter installing the tools package, select ROX-Filer in myX11Setup under "Desktop Manager" for this.

Cloanto opposing registration of US trademark 'Amico'
As documented in the database of the US Patent and Trademark Office, Cloanto is opposing the registration of the trademark 'Amico' by Intellivision Entertainment LLC. since February. The US branch of the Italian software developer registered the 'Amiga' mark in the US in 2017 after the original owner Amiga, Inc. let the registration expire.
Intellivision Entertainment is the current user of the Intellivision trademark and plans to use the attention generated by the well-known brand name of Mattel's old console to release new gaming hardware called Amico. Promotion videos for the new console mostly feature (pseudo) 2D and retro inspired titles. Company head Tommy Tallarico is of italien heritage, the name of the new console is the italian word for 'friend'.
Approached by amiga-news.de, Mike Battilana (Cloanto, Amiga Corporation) explains that this opposition was requested "by a contractual partner", and that he had no option but to heed the request. Normally it would have been executed via the new Amiga company, but since Hyperion has not released their US oppositions, and this is a US case, it had to be filed under Cloanto. (cg)

AmigaOS 4: FreePascal also compatible to AmigaOne X5000
According to Károly 'chainq' Balogh under the title link in a Tweet, the main problem was fixed which did prevent creating FreePascal programs on an AmigaOne X5000 under AmigaOS 4.
The issue was solved via remote access to a computer of a MorphOS developer.

NetBSD project: Amiga 3000 ensured access during server failure
Yesterday NetBSD had a big server failure - the only server which still provided access, has been an Amiga. For the German mirror of the project an Amiga 3000 with a Cyberstorm-Mk2/68060 accelerator board is used.

MorphOS: Iris beta version 91 with verified GMail access
Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek's "Iris" is supposed to become the standard mail program for MorphOS. It supports IMAP and can read and create HTML mails.
About the new beta version 91 of Iris the author wrote: "Iris' use of the Gmail IMAP interface has now been verified by Google, removing security warnings and restrictions when configuring Gmail accounts."

CPU and RAM monitor: NewMeter 1.7
Thomas Rapp's 'NewMeter' is a monitor showing on the Workbench screen the utilization of CPU, RAM and several partitions with a bar chart. The program is configured using tooltypes, the available features the author explained in a German comment on a1k.org.

Raspberry Pi in an Amiga: Network driver for A314
"A314" is an adapter board which helps putting a Raspberry Pi in an Amiga 500, 600 or 2000. Additional to applications like exchanging data with Linux (running on the Pi) or playing audio or video files under Linux, now also the network connection of the Pi can be used thanks to a new AmigaOS driver.
The SANA-II driver called a314eth.device has been tested with Olaf Barthel's commercial TCP stack Roadshow whether or not Ethernet or WLAN is used on the Linix site. Interested users have to compile the driver under Linux themselves, a binary release is not available yet.

Super Wormy requires 2 Megabyte RAM (2 MB Chip-RAM are recommended) as well as at least a 68020 processor. By copying the content of the disk game can be also started from harddrive.
