Team AROS: Bounty #33 placed for back porting of the MorphOS shell commands
Neil Cafferkey initiated the bounty project #33 of Team AROS. The reward was placed for the back porting of the shell commands taken over by MorphOS.

The only pre-condition is the bugfixing of commands normally already existing in the C directory of AROS - there's no need of an enhancement of the functionality.

Malfunctions due to errors in other software layers do not affect the bount, either.

In exchange to this he withdrew bounty #26. This project had the goal to make the VESA graphics mode selectable without adaptated GRUB boot loader. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Happy Birthday, Amiga!
20 years ago the Amiga was shown to the world public. As representative for all the "crazy ones" who still can't get away from the world's best computer system we let our reader Patric Klöter speak who indeed did write a n anniversary :

"Happy Birthday, dear Amiga! Today, 20 years ago, you were shown for the first time to the world public and it was in the New York Lincoln Center. Andy Warhol, Debby Harry and many other famous people were there to see your birth as first of all multimedia machines.

And don't forget: Good friends are the most important thing in the world!

Your friend Patric" (cg) (Translation: wk)

SN-ListDatei v1.2 - webmaster update
There's a new version of SN-ListDatei available on the sn-archiv.de homepage. SN-ListDatei lists all files of a directory including all sub-directories with date and file size.

New in version 1.2 is the support for webmasters who want their files being handled in specific ways by search engines, e.g. Google. For locking files the file "robots.txt" and for the direct indexing the file "sitemap.txt" can be generated, both accepted for example by Google. The archive contains an image showing Google having accepted the "sitemap.txt". Furthermore, there are three new functions to remove files from the list:
  • Removing HTML files (e. g. for robots.txt)
  • Only HTML and text files remain (e.g. for sitemap.txt)
  • Removing files by using pattern
In the future there'll probably be the possibility to generate a XML file for sitemaps, the standard format for such uses. Right now, only a simpe Text file is created that is accepted at least by Google.

There are two new subdomains for the pages of www.sn-archiv.de: There were some additons to the Euro collectors site, too. (ps) (Translation: wk)

MorphOS: Alpha-Version von MUI 4
Stefan Stuntz has released an alpha version of MUI 4.0. The author describes this version as "not ready for a while yet" and speaks of "various rough edges."

Changes in this version:

For users:
  • All mui programs react in realtime on prefs changes.
  • New and much improved background & frame requesters.
  • New color requester with many options, fancy triangle, old-fashioned wheel, linked gradients, etc.
  • New image browser.
  • Complete asl replacement, fancy file & font requesters.
  • New pubscreen manager with skin preview.
  • Dont forget to try context menus on all new elements!
  • ...

For programmers:
  • List class changed completely (subclass of group now), has nice columns, handles scrollbars etc by itself, no more ugly listview->list construct needed. this "list being subclass of group" might be the main reason for incompatibilities, especially with the way older apps use the notify system. Listview.mui is obsolete and mainly an empty shell now.
  • MUI finally has a proper multiline text entry class: Textinput.mcc was built in as "String.mui". an empty Textinput.mcc is supplied as well to map older apps to the new internal string class. Support in the main prefs program is still missing, use Textinput.mcp for now.
  • You can embed a filerequester if you like, use "Filepanel.mui" and control with the usual ASLFR_ tags.
  • New class for easy sub-process handling.
  • ...

The corresponding developer documents (Autodocs) are included in the archive.

New "adtools" project forces development on GCC, GDB, binutils etc.
Maintained by famous Amiga developers like Thomas Frieden, Hans-Jörg Frieden, Olaf Barthel, Andrija Antonijevic, Stefan Burström, Gunther Nikl and Jens Langner the new sourceforge.net open source project (adtools) has been started. it aims to pu all future development on development tools like GCC, binutils andd GDB under one roof to a common development platformn. Beside the already supported platforms like AmigaOS4/PPC support for MorphOS/PPC and others (e.g. AmigaOS3/m68k or AROS) is planed also.

At the already set up CVS respository for this new project one might view the current development state. It includes the sources of the changes to the GCC 4.0.0 compiler which allows to build AmigaOS4/PPC programs. it is planed for the future to provide binaries also. One will be able to chose the compiler version of choice and simply download the package.

All in all this project aims to bundle all development on GCC, GDB, binutils and other Amiga development tools to eventually get to that point where those famous projects will integrate Amiga relevant changes directly to their distributions.

Interested developers of all Amiga flavours (AmigaOS4, MorphOS, AmigaOS3, AROS) are called to join this effort and participate actively. (ps) (Translation: ub)

Following the title link you can find first pictures of the announced Zorro III graphics card daVinci (working title: AmiVD) developed by AHT International BV. The company is moving from Great Britain to Stellendam in the NEtherlands.

The board's development has reached beta state and is running without limitations (2D, 3D and DMA). Still to do are firther quality tests as well as driver adaptions for further PCI cards including sound cards.

The graphics card daVinci has an additional free PCI slot enabling the use of a selected number of PCI cards. Both slots are completely DMA enabled.

Depending on the asked number of boards is a Zorro II version still a possibility but this needs quite a few changes in the software.

AmigaOS4: Support of ESI Juli@ soundcards
Because of a AHI driver by Davy Wentzler AmigaOS4 now also supports the high-quality soundcard Juli@ from ESI/Egosys. The digital, MIDI- and Stereo-LineIn and -Out of the card are supported which also offers playing and recording up to 192 kHz at 24-Bit as well as the choice between RCA- and TRS-port.

The support of the card is managed by the Envy24HT driver which already also allows the use of soundcards Terratec Aureon 5.1 Sky, 7.1 Space, Phase28 and M-Audio Revolution.

The author points out that the chips of the card obviously have been changed (from a Envy24 to a Env24HT or Envy24HT-S). Possibly different codecs were used. The soundcard used by Davy Wentzler was new if you buy a new card it would work.

The driver will be available in the OS4Depot during the next days.

The author thanks Krister Skrtic for the support developing the driver of this card as well as Egosys for making available the complete source code (!) and the documentation of the Windows drivers. (snx) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS: D2A-Patch integrates Magellan-Lister to Ambient
The Dopus2Ambient-Commoditypatch written by Jacek 'jacaDcaps' Piszczek and Marcin 'MorgothDCaps' Kurek is a hack which makes it possible to open Magellan-Lister with a double click in Ambient.

The ARexx-interface is used for it. Additional to ARexx Magellan and Ambient (therefore also the icon.library and workbench.library) have to be started. In order to hide the Magellan window the backdrop-modus must be deactivated. Now you can start D2A and/or copy it to your WBStartup directory.

Please also note the known problems which are described in the Readme-file.

GTK-MUI wrapper: More demos released
In the course of the bounty project of a GTK-MUI wrapper there are some more demos (68k files and sourcecode) belonging to the GTK tutorial available at the title link: buttons, entry and table.

The buttons example requires a working XPM datatype (see readme).

If someone succeeds in port the author asks for getting the source code mailed or to get access to the CVS. (snx) (Translation: ub)

Emulator: PSP-UAE 0.31 for the Playstation Portable
Christophe Thibault has ported the Amiga emulator to the handheld console PSP ("PlayStation Portable") by Sony (screen shot). Our reader 'shad' estimates the reached speed of the emulation still a bit low (~70%) but compatibility seems to be pretty good.

Changes in version 0.31:
  • Chip memory set to 2mb so Monkey Island works again.
  • File selector improvements.
  • Added options menu.

To use the emulator a firmware version 1.00 or 1.50 is required. Note that the emulator uses the 333 MHz processor clock. (cg) (Translation: ub)

MorphOS: Bulldog 1.4, mod plugin for AmiNetRadio

BullDog 1.4

Rupert Hausberger's program BullDog loads data from the usenet using nzb descriptions (screen shots: 1, 2, 3). The new version fixes several bugs:
  • Fixed stupid bug in the yEnc decoder, which marked yEnc-singlepart files as incomplete.
  • Fixed another bug in the xml-decoder. Now subjects without the "(1/1)" ending get recognized correctly.
  • Fixed bug in UU-multipart routine, now saving works correctly.
  • Added workaround for nasty comments in segment-bodys, caused wrong decoding of some files.

First screenshots of the new theme engine for the alternative GUI system NewGui can be found under the title link. The current beta version, available in the download area, already contains a coniguration program for testing the new functionality.

For users who want to create own themes a comprehensive manual will be available soon. By using the program DEEPVIEW that is part of the package should an advanced user already be able to follow this relatively simple process.

Special thanks of the NewGui author go to Aaron Diezman who made the first theme called "Sky" available. The NewGui version 1.4.5 is still in development, the final product will contain colour definitons for borders and similar things. (cg) (Translation: wk)

File system: NTFS 0.2 (Beta, AmigaOS 3/MorphOS)
Marek Szyprowski has published a new test version of his NTFS implementation for AmigaOS and MorphOS. The driver allows to read volumes which were formated under Windows XP/NT with the file system NTFS.

Changes in version 0.2:
  • It is mainly a bugfix release.
  • Hopefully all problems with large files are solved.
  • Support for fragmented MTF zone has been added, so disks used under WindowsXP should work.

 We have significant numbers to celebrate this month. The numbers are
4.0 and 1.0. Well, almost 4.0. What's significant about that number is
that this month sees the last release of Amiga OS 4.0 before the full
commercial release! That's a great step in the history of Amiga OS.
Your patience will still be tested, however, as the story below
mentions "a few months" before the commercial release will be ready.
 The 1.0 number relates to Win UAE. After more version releases than I
can count, the program has finally hit the magic 1.0 designation.
Congratulations are in order.
 While all this is going on, the Amiga community stays as active as
ever. We have several stories this issue on upcoming Amiga events. We
were disappointed to learn the budget for AmiWest will only allow that
venerable show to run for one day, but it looks as though it will be a
very interesting day. Meanwhile, our Nordic Amigan groups have their
own events to talk about. They sound to be just as much fun. Norway is
the land of my ancestors, so I'd love to get to both of those northern
shows.
 There are many positive items to read in this issue. We hope you
enjoy them all.

E-mail to the E-ditor:

 I am a former Amiga user who still tries to follow the happening in
the Amiga World. Thanks ( And congratulations on your twelfth
anniversary) for your efforts in keeping this alive. I am at least
aware that the Amiga still exists. But.. I am now confused as to what
the Amiga is and what it can do for the average user. Can you
possibly, in very layman's terms, produce an article that explains
what Amiga has to offer? I understand there have been numerous
ownership changes and false promises but somehow an Amiga product
still exists. I would look forward to a in-depth breakdown of what
Amiga offers and possibly where one may purchase these products.

Thanks  Bill
~~~~~~
Bill,
 Wow. You ask some very pertinent and difficult questions. In truth,
I'm not sure how to answer fully. What I usually do in cases like this
is ask for comments from the readers, who have much more collective
wisdom than I do.
 How about it readers? What can the Amiga do for the average user at
this time in its life? Please send your thoughts to
amigaupdate@globaldialog.com and we'll share them in future issues.
 My personal take is that the Amiga's role is now much reduced from
what it had been. Linux has taken on the mantle of the main
alternative to Windows, even more so than Apple. However, the Amiga
still offers what I've long considered to be the best operating system
available. It's compact, consistent code, with commands and features
that are not available in any other operating systems. As just one
simple example, I've long wished for something like filenotes in every
other operating system I've used.
 Amiga OS is also proprietary without being overpriced or suffering
from monopolistic practices by the company that owns it. If a user is
concerned about the liabilities often talked about for Linux and other
open source code, Amiga OS offers a good alternative. Keep in mind
that the core of Apple OS is now a version of BSD UNIX, so there are
potential liabilities even there. Personally, I think that issue is
considerably overblown, but the fact remains there are no such issues
with Amiga OS.
 Here's a web page where you can find some Amiga dealers:
 Regards,
 Brad
 NAF - Norsk amigaforening (English: Norwegian Amiga Association) - a
Norwegian Amiga user group acknowledged by Amiga Inc. founded in 1992
by me (Tommy R. Strand), is holding its annual NAF Barbeque Party
(since 2003).
 Mainly for all members of NAF, but others, especially from the Amiga
platform community are most welcome. For the first time this year, we
have people travelling almost 1000 km to the venue, and at the moment
we have 11 people that have registered. From past experiences, we are
expecting this number to rise to about 20.
 Please visit NAF web site at http://naf.as/ for more information
(sorry, Norwegian only). We DO welcome foreigners, especially for
instance those who we are in contact with on the EFnet and
AmigaworldNET IRC networks.
 Remember: This is a party with a high level of decency and respect
in the usual manners and is already known to be a positive part of the
existing Amiga IRC community.
 Don't forget: Time: Saturday, 2nd of July, 2005. Place: The city of
Mo i Rana, Nordland, Norway (The city beneath the Arctic Circle!)
 If you wish, on Sunday we will have a drive by car around in the
community to collect you. Rana is afaik Norway's 4th largest community
in area, and can give you lots of positive experiences of both nature
and friendly people.
 YOU are MOST WELCOME!
RICHARD DRUMMOND TO SPEAK AT AMIWEST 2005 BANQUET!
++++
 By special arrangement, Amiga OS4 developer Richard Drummond will
present the banquet address at the AmiWest 2005 Saturday evening
banquet! He is our **surprise** speaker this year! Here is a bio of
Richard (courtesy of AmiWest committee member Charles Pickrell) to
help you get better acquainted!
 Richard, our guest speaker, is playing a dual role at AmiWest this
year. He is representing himself and the excellent work that he has
contributed to E-UAE (the Amiga emulation system for
Unix/Linux/Mac/Amiga) and to the AmigaOS4 port of SDL (the popular
cross-platform game-programming toolkit), as well as representing
Hyperion Entertainment and the OS4 project. But first we would like to
share a little bit about Richard's background.
 The son of a police officer Richard grew up in Scotland and due to
his father's line of work moved often, having lived in many parts of
the country including Dingwall, Ullapool, Orkney and Glasgow (where he
studied Electronics and Software Engineering at the University of
Glasgow).
 In 1984 at the age of ten Richard got his first "real" computer, a
Commodore64 and began teaching himself to program in BASIC, and later
in assembly language. He claims he never wrote any C64 software of
significance, but rather used the platform to cut his teeth on
computing in general. Later in 1988 Richard moved up to the Amiga 500
and began programming in earnest on the Amiga OS platform.
 Richard's Amiga interest grew so much that at one point he began
writing for popular Amiga magazines CU Amiga and Amiga Format. When
Amiga Format stopped publishing their magazine Richard fell away from
the Amiga scene having lost interest in a "dying platform." He then
turned to Unix and Linux platforms to fill the computing void left by
Amiga. During this time, Richard met his future wife, an American, in
the UK and they settled down together in England."
 Sorry, but that's all we have time for today. However, more details
about Richard and his OS 4 involvement will be forthcoming. Have you
ordered your AmiWest tickets yet? Just go to
sacc.org/amiwest/press05-3.html, print it out, fill in the form and
send it in. You'll want to be there!
So remember,
 AmiPodder version 1.0 has just been released. AmiPodder is a utility
for subscribing to podcasts (a regularly published radio programme,
usually in MP3 format) on your Amiga. AmiPodder will download each
podcast as it is published and then you can listen to the programme on
your Amiga or transfer it to a portable music player.
 Podcasting is a new Internet service that is just starting to take
off. Currently most podcasts are produced by amateurs but large media
organisations including the BBC are beginning to offer some of their
programmes as podcasts too. Recently podcasting got a big credibility
boost when Apple announced that podcast support will be included in
the next version of iTunes. With AmiPodder, Amiga users are able to
take advantage of this new technology right from the start!
 AmiPodder is freeware and version 1.0 can be downloaded from:
http://www.seal-amiga.co.uk/robert/amipodder/index.html
 I'm continuing to develop AmiPodder to improve the user interface and
to support podcasting standards as they evolve, if you'd like to be
part of making this software better, please join the AmiPodder mailing
list linked on the site.
Amiga emulator: UAE for the Sony PSP
Christophe Thibault has ported the Amiga emulator UAE on the Handheld game console PSP ("PlayStation Portable") from Sony (screenshot). According to our reader 'shad' the speed is still rather low (ca. 70%) but the compatibility seems to be quite high.
In order to use this emulator a firmware of the version 1.00 or 1.50 is required. Please note that the programm pushes up the processor rate to 333 MHz.
Status update: AmiZilla- and GTK-wrapper project
Ok, many people seem to think the AmiZilla project is dead, and with good reason, as there's been no information released in a long time. So I thought I'd put out an update, so people can see things are happening!
Ok, firstly, the NSPR (Netscape Portable Runtime) is basically functionally complete - this is a base Operating System abstraction layer (for things like TCP/IP etc). XPCOM (Cross Platform Component Object Model) seems to be mostly functioning - it allows different components in Mozilla to message each other, and access files on any platform, etc.
A couple of people have had the code compiling with these layers, producing an exe of around 500M in size (with debug info), which ran and exited cleanly, but requires an X11 server as a screen device! At the moment, we have switched from a static huge exe, to a library version (a2ixlibrary), but we haven't been able to do a complete build with this yet.
We're creating some helpful documentation on what files are needed, and how to compile an exe etc, along with some much needed info on how to set up a Cross-Compiling environment on Linux and Windows. This is very important, as unless you have a Dragon accelerator, you can't compile AmiZilla on a 68k-based Amiga, as they physically just don't have enough memory to compile it (you need 256-512M memory at least, and we won't even go into how long it takes to compile 200M of source code, on a 68k...)! It should be possible to compile it on an AmigaOne, or Pegasos though.
But more interesting, a couple of people are working on a GTK->MUI(Zune)/Reaction layer, primarily for the AmiZilla project, but it will be able to be used for other GTK apps too.
It's likely, we will be looking at getting Firefox running first (it's only a simple compiler switch, to compile either Firefox or Mozilla), then maybe the whole Mozilla suite if people want it (probably unnecessary though).
We're looking at getting it running on 68k/MUI first, and hopefully the 68k exe should run on AmigaOS4 and MorphOS as is.
Then we can look at MorphOS/OS4/AROS native ports. With a MorphOS port we may need a compile of the latest version of GCC ie: 3.x, to be able to compile AmiZilla though.
The GTK->MUI/Reaction layer will be done as a separate project, to make it easier to support multiple OSes (Amiga 3.x, OS4, MorphOS and AROS), but the initial target will be to get Firefox running on AmigaOS 3.x.
Also, an AROS bounty has been put up for a GTK->MUI(Zune) layer, so that it can then be easily ported to any other Amiga Operating System (if not already done). Also, the MorphZone bounty program is considering, either starting their own GTK->MUI wrapper bounty, or pointing it towards the AROS one.
The GTK layer will be done as two shared libs - glib.library and gtk.library.
So far, GTK->MUI seems fairly straightforward, as MUI is quite flexible, and fairly similar in structure to GTK- these both use an Object Model (ie: as in using objects like Windows, Buttons etc, not as in C++/Java Object-Orientated programming!), and GTK does not poke directly into it's data structures, but uses functions for object manipulation.
We've put together a basic working example using GTK calls, of initialising GTK (really an MUI call), opening a Window with a Button on it, closing the Window, and shutting the system (MUI) down. We've also compiled the GTK dev-kit examples helloworld and helloworld2, without any modification to their sources.
One minor problem is that MUI gives back a pointer when it's initialised, but GTK doesn't, so we'll have to save that pointer somehow, probably in per-app data, saved within the library structure itself.
At Sourceforge.net already screenshots have been published, showing the GTK-MUI wrapper under AmigaOS 3.1, AROS and MorphOS. Also demo code and compiled exes (68k) can be found there (Download, 33 KB).
GDK is an OS independent video abstraction layer for GTK - GTK makes it's calls to GDK, which then calls the underlying system (in Linux it's X-Windows). We haven't looked into it fully yet, but we shouldn't have to worry about GDK, as only GTK calls it, and Firefox shouldn't make any direct calls to it - and as we're replacing GTK calls with MUI/Reaction ones, GDK won't be called!
More of a challenge will be GLib- we're currently researching how much Firefox uses it, as some of GLib is very simple, and would just take a recompile, but other stuff like events, signals and threads could be more problematic, and may require replacing with Reaction/MUI calls.
More developers are always welcome to join us - the more resources we have, the quicker this will get done! :) To join the AmiZilla list, either send an e-mail or go to the website (but you need to create a Yahoo account to do it this way). Also, donations to help attract more developers, are most welcome too! :)
