APC&TCP Celebrates 15th Birthday
Pressrelease APC&TCP Celebrates 15th Birthday We have overlooked it nearly. APC&TCP got 15 years old this year. Being as active as in the beginning. Currently we have a survey for a reprint of the AmigaOS 3.9 book and the English Amiga Guru Book. New versions of Desert Racing and AmiATLAS are in the works, MTRechnung for OS4 will be released soon and some other projects are close to their release. Meanwhile we have adopted the English print magazine Total Amiga and on 5th July the first English version of the Amiga Future is going to be released. By the way the Amiga Future will get 10 years old this year. To celebrate a little we have reduced many prices in our online shop permanently. Quite recently we have dropped the price for an subscription of the Amiga Future to foreign countries. The price for shipping and handling to foreign countries has been reduced aswell. Even though the postal office raised prices for it by 50 percent starting from 1st January. This way we hope to get some more subscribers for the Amiga Future to secure the future of the magazine in a long term. (snx) (Translation: aj)

Alfred Faust (ANF)

MIDI-Sequencer: BarsnPipes New 1.26
Alfred Faust has a new version of the Multimedia-MIDI-Sequencers BarsnPipes published. This update fixes all Problems which are reported to the author, among others:
  • If the synchronisiation is not selected it is now really deactivated.
  • All GUI pics are reintegrated into the main program. The possibility, to create own GUIs was used only very rare. The loading procedure takes a big amount of time. Because of the rare used nice "Skinability"-feature I've decided, to remove it again. This reduces the start-time of the program very much.
  • Now 3 different Versions are available for OS3.0 or higher a 32-color-GUI (for AMIGAs with graphics-card), for OS3.0 or higher a 8-color-GUI (for AMIGAs without graphics-card) and for OS2.1 8-color-GUI (ONLY for OS2.1)

Hyperion comment on their dispute with Amiga Inc
Press release:
Leuven, Belgium - May 1, 2007.

Whilst it is not Hyperion Entertainment's policy to comment on ongoing litigation, we would like to reassure our customers (whom we wish to thank for their very numerous notes of support following the news) that development of AmigaOS 4.0 related components is still ongoing and will continue apace during the duration of the litigation with Amiga Inc.

Following over 18 months of unproductive negotiations with Amiga Inc. through our management and attorneys, we welcome the opportunity to finally present our case in a court of law which was regrettably the only remaining avenue after Amiga Inc. repeatedly and consistently stonewalled any attempt to resolve the outstanding issues (including the "Party Pack" and "I am Amiga Club" voucher schemes and the failure to acknowledge the intellectual property rights of third party developers) through mediation and binding arbitration.

Despite the failure of Amiga Inc. to secure access to the Amiga OS 3.5 and 3.9 source-code and indeed the reworked Amiga 3.1 source-code, Hyperion Entertainment has, in the form of Amiga OS 4.0, delivered a product which meets and surpasses all contractual design and development goals (e.g. full Amiga chipset independence), a fact which was previously acknowledged contractually and publicly by Amiga Inc. Under the 2001 agreement with Amiga Inc. Hyperion is entitled to all revenues stemming from distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 irrespective of the execution of the "buy in" clause which relates solely to subsequent versions (Amiga OS 4.1 and beyond).

We will therefore vigorously defend the claim which we consider entirely devoid of substance and we are extremely confident of a favorable outcome.

In closing, we would like to remind dealers and other third parties that distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 without the prior permission of Hyperion VOF and certain third party developers is illegal under EU, US and international copyright legislation and therefore entirely at their own risk. AROS-ML

AROS: Renaming project
According to Aaron Digulla, initiator of the open source code operating system AROS, the name "Amiga" will be deleted from the project name because of the legal steps of Amiga Inc. against Hyperion.

Because of these reasons the project simply is called "AROS", "AROS Research Operating System" or "AROS Research OS". Of course you can call the project just like you want but in eMails, articles and on websites it should be called "AROS - The AROS Research Operating System". (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS for AmigaOS: Updates to icon.library and picture.datatype for AfA
Bernd Roesch has released updates to icon.library as well as to picture.datatype for his AmigaOS port of AROS components, "AROS for AmigaOS" (AfA).

With these, it is now possible to employ the Workbench plugin Eastern for generating thumbnail icons under AfA as well (reported by amiga-news.de).

To this end, the icon.library now supports "globalidentify hook," which is required by Eastern as well as by DefIcons. Additionally, the version was changed to V51 and AmigaOS 4 compatibility for reading and writing 24 bit icon data was added.

Version 1.5 of Eastern is required, in addition, when using cache, the Raw option must be set.

The new picture.datatype now supports scaling in the function DT_Readpixelarray, which is also required by Eastern. Also, more 8 bit ILBM images are displayed correctly on a "classic" Amiga with Picasso 96 or CyberGraphX.

Moreover, in 32 and 24 bit images on 16 bit screens, a dithering takes place, so that color gradients as in the original picture.datatype are not visible. In this regard, the author Thilo Köhler thanks for the source code.

The update is rounded off with an extension to the FAQ collection for Eastern and the picture.datatype under CyberGraphX on Amiga computers.

Thumbnail Icons: Eastern 1.5
Stephan Rupprecht's Eastern is a Workbench plugin that automatically displays a thumbnail preview instead of the default icon for images that do not have their own icon. The latest changes:
  • v1.5: added RAW/S option to speed up loading of cached icons
  • v1.4: no longer needs progressive mode for the cache, added WAITUPDATE option
  • v1.3: in 1.2 the cache was limited to Workbench, now all apps are cached. The 68k build of Eastern assumes an OS4 compatible icon.library when the version number of the library is v51 or higher. In this case truecolor icons will be created. internal release

Eastern is available for AmigaOS 3 and 4. (cg) (Translation: cad)

MorphOS: OpenTTD 0.5.1 published
The OpenTTD-team has published the final version OpenTTD 0.5.1.

OpenTTD is an Open-Source clone of the well-known PC-strategy game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe" from the 90ies with many extensions - so a network modus, individual graphic sets and adaptions to over 20 languages.

OpenTTD 0.5.1 is similar to version 0.5.0 but contains a long list of bug fixes. Please have a look at the TT-forum.

OpenTTD is available for all important operating systems inclusive MorphOS. A compiling for AmigaOS, AmigaOS 4 or AROS is still missing but according to the developer of MorphOS-port, Christian Rosentreter, this should be possible without major problems. The source code is "AmigaOS-ready" but he neither cannot create nor test it because of the missing hardware. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Event: PUSH 2007.1 (Gothenburg)
Press release The number one alternative computer event in west of Sweden, PUSH, will be held this year in June. The doors will open Friday 15th June at 20:00 and we go on until Sunday 17th at 15:00.

The party is open to everyone running alternative operating systems. The PUSH building is a Windows Free Zone.

The news for this year is that we lower the entrance fee, instead of going with the inflation. The new fee is 140 SEK for pre-registered attendees and 240 SEK if you show up unregistered.

We will be at the same place as previous years - at Wartagården in Gothenburg. More information and driving directions are available on the PUSH website.

If you are interested in visiting PUSH we would like you to pre-register at the PUSH website. The registration is not binding at all. If you don't come we won't charge you a single öre. It is just to make it a little easier for us to know how many visitors we must prepare for.

More information will follow closer to the event, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop us an e-mail. (snx)

Amiga Guru Book: Interested in Reprint of the English version?
Press release: Some time ago we rereleased the German Amiga Guru Book. We have promised to care for a reprint of the English Amiga Guru Book as well.

Recently we've been fully occupied with various other projects (amongst others the English version of the Amiga Future) and couldn't take care of the Guru Book. Now we have more time and want to work more intensely on this project.

Because of that we ask all users who are interested in a reprint of the Amiga Guru Book to drop an email to Andreas@apc-tcp.de using the subject "Guru Book".

This is not a preorder! We only want to check if there are enough interested people for a reprint! We are not able to tell a price nor release date! (cg) (Translation: dr)

AROS: IRC-client WookiChat 2.6b8 (beta)
James "jahc" Carroll has published an AROS-version of his MUI-based IRC-client Wookiechat. The archive only contains the program. Additionally you need the complete distribution of Wookiechat 2.5.

This first beta version still contains some minor problems:
  • The window size changes if a "Tab" is closed
  • Some windows have a transparent background. This bug should be fixed soon. Meanwhile the author recommends to set a background picture in the MUI preference for WookieChat for the seperate windows
  • The lower edge of the main window partly cannot be seen

  • 1.23: grrr, jpeg saver was still broken...
  • 1.22: another AmigaOS4 release: broke jpg and ilbm output the last time because I changed the internal image format from RGB to ARGB without adapting the savers to it.
  • 1.22: implemented IF=ICONFORMAT/K option. Now it's possible to create NewIcons with the OS4 version (requires newicon.library).

Oldschool Demoscene and game party in Lübeck (25th-28th May)
Press release: This year the successful demo scene and gaming event "Maximum Overdose" goes into its eigth round in Lübeck during the Whitsun holidays(25th-28th May). Whoever missed the Breakpoint because living too far away shouldn't miss the MO8, since the Amiga and C64 competition will be shown again there.

The entrance fee is EUR 15 for Friday evening until Monday noon. A dormitory will be available (bring airbeds and earplugs against snorers).

Recent rumours claimed toe MO would be a pure C64 party. That is just wrong! The party is open to all alternative systems and Amigas are likely to be the second most popular system there. To even improve the Amiga share, you need to go there. Do what you like your Amiga for: Be creative and bring your productions (and your Amiga) to the party. Competitions will be held in the following categories:
  • Demo
  • Graphics
  • Music (MP3 remix, tracked)

Furthermore there will be the opportunity to play your favorite Amiga or C64 game on the big screen against other attendees at the gaming competition. Not enough there will be the "Datadisco" withthe best oldschool tunes and a live act. For the small appetite there will be a catering with free coffee and a big barbecue outside. 'Cause you know: The real party is outside! (cg) (Translation: ub)

SAFIR: IRC session with Hans-Jörg Frieden (English)
On the Swedish SAFIR web page, the transcript of an IRC session with Hans-Jörg Frieden was published. Among other things, it is disclosed herein that work will continue on the completion of the "classic" version of AmigaOS 4 as soon as the AmigaOne version is rolled out - which will be the case really soon.

Currently, the final ISO file for AmigaOne computers is being prepared, which should be distributed as a physical product in form of a CD together with appropriate packaging. On the other hand, the version for Amiga's with PowerPC acceleration cards still exhibits a couple of rough edges to straighten out, which, however, should no longer require too much time according to the developer's estimation. Additionally, a new SDK is being worked on. (snx) (Translation: cad)

MUI-clone: AfA Zune 1.0, final beta 3
Bernd Roesch has published an update of his AmigaOS 3-port of the MUI-clone Zune. Changes in this version:
  • supports MUI 4-images (xxx.mim-files). If capitalization is used (xxx.MIM) a frame and a button background are created which can look nicer (look at the arrows in this screenshot)
  • The AFA picturedatatype_exe must be used and installed for MUI 4-Bilder. The contained version fixes some compatibility problems under CGX-systems.
  • The installer works if Zune directories were newly created, too
  • Shows class-number of the MUI-class if it could not be converted
  • Contains updated classes in order to use the newer YAM 2.5 "Nightly-Builds" (tested on 2. April 2007)
  • Example Skin-files were adapted to the new texteditor-keymappings of the contained version 15.21. Older texteditor-classes should not be used. Version 15.21 works reliable under Zune and MUI.
  • Toolbar-preference "no border" now works
  • Gadtools and intuition can use the skins created by Zune with the help of the contained intuition.library. Because of this programs based on StormWizard can set colours in buttons and cycle- or popup-gadgets. Examples are Arteffect (screenshot), AmiBlitz, akDatatype-preferences as well as the AfA-preferences.

Press release:
The German magazine Amiga Future is taking over the famous English magazine Total Amiga from issue 27.

In a very close cooperation with Robert Williams and the Total Amiga Team, we have realized a concept to guarantee the future of an English magazine for a very long time.

Of course this will only be possible if there are enough subscriptions all over the time. However existing Total Amiga subscribers will receive any magazines left on their subscription. Issue 26 of the Total Amiga is the last issue to be published by SEAL in the UK.

In the near future there will be an English release of the German Amiga Future, which will take the place for the Total Amiga. The first new issue of the Amiga Future to be published in German and English is the number 67 for july/august 2007 (release date 5th of July).

For this all the German articles will be translated into English, so the content of both editions will be the same. Our intention is now to get in contact with some more translators with English as their native language. Interested users, they don't have to work for free, should call our editors office as soon as possible.

Both issues of the forthcoming new Amiga Future will be released at the same time. In other words there are no changes for our German readers in the future, but almost all things will change for the current readers of the current Total Amiga:

On time release every two months is one of the important things for the Amiga Future editors. Every issue can be ordered directly from us or from several Amiga dealers worldwide. (Interested dealers please call us too).

Every magazine can be ordered as single issue or as subscription, you can choose it with or without a Cover CD-ROM. Because the Total Amiga did not have such a feature in the past, all current subscribers will receive their magazines without an Cover CD-ROM. Subscribers interested in upgrading their subscription to include the CD can call our office before issue 67 is released Of course upgrading to the Amiga Future with CD-ROM is always possible for additional 3.- Euro at any time.

Each Issue Amiga Future magazine currently contains 52 pages, cover pages in colour, the rest b/w. This won't change for the future as it is an important part of our concept. So it is even possible to release new issues even without any advertisers in a single issue!

Prices have had to change in comparison to the Total Amiga because there are more issues per year and the magazines will now be posted from Germany. Every English or German issue of the Amiga Future will cost 4.50 Euro without a CD or 7.50 with our Cover CD-ROM. All prices plus shipping costs, e.g. additional 3.75 Euro worldwide.

Our special subscription price is 39.90 Euro resp. 57.90 Euro for the CD-ROM edition. Here are the shipping costs already included. You can see, becoming a subscriber is a lot cheaper (and easier) than ordering a single issue and it gives our editors confidence in the future of the English magazine.

We invite anyone interested in an English Amiga magazine to order the first issue as soon as possible or even better subscribe to the magazine and become a part of the Amiga Future community. We can always only print a small additional quantity of magazines above those for subscriptions and preorders so make sure you get your copy.

Our editors office is reachable at:

The new forthcoming English translated issue of the Amiga Future magazine can already be ordered in our online-shop, the same for subscriptions with or without the Cover CD-ROM.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us via eMail or by visiting our English section of the website. Of course there is even a newsletter available, to subscription send eMail to newsletter-subscribe@apc-tcp.de.

About Amiga Future

The Amiga Future was founded about nine years ago and has started with issue 11 by the publisher ICP (e.g. German AmigaPlus) because of technical reasons. Later on the publisher FALKE has taken over the Amiga Future magazine with its editors and the AmigaPlus too. Almost seven years ago we had an buy out and the Amiga Future was done by its editors itself. Since issue 27 the magazine is done completely by its editors office, meaning writing articles, layout and even sales and marketing. Actually we have a very safe financial base, so even if the subscriptions getting lost that much this would be no reason for stopping the magazine at all.

Additionally there are almost daily enhancements at the website. Besides the biggest cheats database (over 5.000 cheats for over 2.000 Amiga Games) we have a very large database with over 1.000 articles available online. Actually we have even a new gallery with over 1.000 Amiga related pictures of all kinds. Another new feature is our download area with lots of full releases of famous Amiga Software titles (this includes Games and Applications).

Since some time now we are also hosting the very famous Big Book of Amiga Hardware (BBoAH) which is being updated very often. Quite some other enhancements for the website are always planned.

About Total Amiga

Total Amiga is an A4 printed Amiga magazine published by the enthusiastic Amiga users at South Essex Amiga Link. The magazine covers all aspects of the Amiga from a user's point of view, we try to be as honest and realistic as we can. Each issue has a selection of news, product reviews, hints and tips, tutorials and opinion. Inside the magazine you will find a variety of writers, some regular and others contributing the odd piece now and then.

The magazine has now been running for about eight years, for the first nine issues it was called "Clubbed". Total Amiga is published quarterly (four times per year). Total Amiga is available by subscription world wide, we also sell single issues and distribute through Amiga dealers.

Total Amiga is produced entirely on the Amiga using PageStream 4 and a variety of other software. We try to maintain a high quality throughout the magazine and have been praised for our production values. Total Amiga is a non-profit publication and all the contributors and everyone who works on it gives their time for free as a service to the Amiga community.

Future

To retain the quality even in the future we need your support. At first of course we need enough subscriptions of the Amiga Future. Second we need some good translators and even writers for the website. (cg) (Translation: cg)

MorphOS: IRC client Wookiechat (beta)
James "jahc" Carroll makes a MorphOS version of his MUI based IRC client Wookiechat available. The archive contains only the main programm, in addition you need the complete distribution ofWookiechat 2.5.

Carroll himself doesn't own MorphOS and therefore can't say anything about the reliability respectively stability of this port. As AmiDevCPP was used for the compilation, the next thing planned is an AROS version of Wookiechat. (cg) (Translation: wk)
