"Amiga-news.com which formerly was Amigaliennews is now online again and will be still more up-to-date because of additional editors and improved web technology.

Because of many mails and some reflections we have made up our minds to call us "amiga-news.com". We do not want to be a competitor to existing Amiga news sites but more a completion. We also want to point out that we have underestimated the possibility of confusion with amiga-news.de to the time of registration of our domain. We did not have this intention. From our point of view amiga-news.de is one of the best Amiga news sites which we all owe a lot.

Because of the positive messages of the last days about the development of the new Amiga system we have decided to publish an AmigaOS 4-software list. It is meant to give you a syrvey about current AmigaOS 4-software.

We all wish you a lot of fun with our new sites." (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: official status update

AmigaOS 4.0 status update

by Hans-Jörg Frieden, Hyperion Entertainment

With the Developer Pre-release finally out, the time is right for a status report on the current state of AmigaOS 4.0. The huge amount of work invested into the project by a lot of dedicated developers means that there has already been substantial progress since the pre-release.

Some of the 68k components of the pre-release have in the meantime been ported to PowerPC code. The most prominent of these are Picasso96 and MUI. While Picasso96 is still in alpha test among the developers, the PPC version of MUI is being beta-tested right now, and is expected to be stabilized soon.

The kernel has also seen some updates. Among other things, it now supports a special resource called the performance monitor. The performance monitor is a hardware profiler within the CPU that allows the programmer extremely fine-tuned profiling of code, even including counting cache hits and misses, instruction timing, pipeline stalls, number of instructions patched, instruction throughput, and a lot of other factors. The performance monitor is controlled via performancemonitor.resource, which offers an easy-to-use API that wraps all this functionality into a few functions.

Further improvements of the kernel include support for the Altivec unit. The Altivec unit is a SIMD vector processing unit. SIMD stands for "single instruction multiple data", meaning that a series of instructions is executed in parallel on multiple streams of data items. Altivec has a lot of uses, most prominently in 3D graphics, but also in image processing, signal processing, compression/decompression, and all general computing applications that inherently work by executing the same instructions on large datasets. Altivec support in the kernel isn't 100% stable yet, but is expected to be fully functional very soon.

Moovid, the well-known media player, has now also been ported to PowerPC, and the results are quite spectacular. An Altivec-enabled version is also in the works. Moovid plays a wide range of movie codecs, including DivX. A lot of progress has also been made on the shared C library, newlib, and the static C library, clib2.

Subsequently, there is now a new gcc compiler suite that runs up to six times faster than the compiler included in the SDK. Furthermore, since the final release of GNU C 3.4.0 has emerged, it has also been successfully ported to AmigaOS 4.0, and is now used for most components and programs. GCC 3.4.0 features a much better code generator than previous versions, much better support for ANSI C++, and implements the Motorola 'vector' extension for Altivec (meaning you can use types like 'vector unsigned char x' in your program to signify a vector for Altivec).

One program that has seen a tremendous speed boost is AmiPDF. The new PowerPC version of AmiPDF is, depending on input, up to 60 times faster than the original version on the prerelease.

Furthermore we expect a working serial device and floppy support soon.

The USB stack is shaping up as well. It now supports HID devices like keyboards and mice as well as HID joysticks and steering wheels, and USB mass storage devices like USB sticks, flash card readers, 7-in-1 card readers and cameras.

The A1 IDE device now has working UDMA support. Also, interrupts are no longer polled but delivered properly. This means that the device does not require any CPU time for transfers.

Currently, work concentrates on performance optimization. Results look quite good already, and stress tests have shown the device to be 100% reliable - no data corruption occurs.

This material will in due course be released for download to registered users of the Developer Pre-release on our web site at:

AmigaOS 4: Status of missing bits
H.-J. Frieden is giving on amigaworld.net a short overview of the missing bits of the prerelease. Altivec, IDE DMA: Yes.

USB: Supports mice, keyboards, mass storage (USB sticks, flash card readers, most modern cameras), HID devices (joysticks, pads, steering wheels, AmigaInput driver in the works).

SNAP: The system already runs on LinuxPPC and the AmigaOS 4.0 port has already begun.

Floppy: Almost finished.

Warp3D: Ported and functional. The reason it isn't released yet is mostly a crash when flushing the library, and the fact that old 68k programs cannot use it yet due to the lack of a 68k jump table.

Native graphics system: In alpha testing for the developers. Mostly done, but needs a bit of polish to go off into beta test.

JIT: Mostly functional using the apprunner. What doesn't work is automatic starting of applications. Going to be tackled soonish. (cg) (Translation: gf)

Genesi (e-mail)

Genesi: Status report / First Open Desktop Workstations assembled in Las Vegas
Today, Genesi published a press release and a status report (Watts Happening!) which we are quoting below:

Press release: Genesi completes first production in Las Vegas

7-June-2004 Genesi completed its first major US production of Open Desktop Workstations during the first week of June. The systems were built at the Easter Seals facility in North Las Vegas. This assembly operation involved training developmentally disabled adults in computer assembly procedures under the guidance of an Easter Seals supervisor and Genesi-USA General Manager Paul Adams (photo 1, photo 2).

An important part of this process was the Genesi Operational Method Sheet (PDF file, 1.8 MB), which is a Pegasos assembly procedure picture book. During the production, Easter Seals supervisors conducted an assembly time study to determine the terms of the contract to be completed for future assembly operations. Genesi will continue to build systems at the Easter Seals facility until the assembly crew is fully trained and comfortable with the process.

Watts Happening!

We figured it was time for an update as a long time Genesi/bplan supporter responded to an email we sent out this morning to the Image Installer Team and suggested we make some of the information public. The email was primarily sent to thank Michael Heider, Christian Geier and Erhard Bruse for their continued support. Here are some details included in the email:

We wanted to let you know that Sven [Luther, Genesi's Linux coordinator]will be arriving here in Austin, Texas with us tonight. Sven will be here this week to teach the Freescale/Motorola Applications Engineering Team everything they need to know and generally assist them so that they can conduct a four hour class on the Pegasos for the 200+ Freescale Global Field Application Engineers that gather here this week for the Global FAE Conference. Sven will train the trainers. At the end of the week, every Freescale office in the world will have at least one person who knows how to do all the basic things on the Pegasos that they need to do to be able to use and prepare the machine as a solution to customers.

We also wanted you to know that every Pegasos that we produced two weeks ago for commercial release has been shipped to the USA and assembled here into Open Desktop Workstations. [...] They will begin to arrive at their intended destinations starting tomorrow.

We explain all this to you because we want you to understand (as mentioned in the post yesterday) that we have been delivering units to a large customer since March. As you you will understand, these invoices requires us to layout 13-16 weeks in ADVANCE of production the funds for many components required to produce ALL the boards to be delivered before the FIRST boards are made. We cannot order components for just what we need when we need it. These boards are then built into cases with memory, hard drives, power supplies and graphics cards at a further expense to satisfy the ultimate purchase order. Once they are delivered to this customer, the customer pays at a minimum of 60 days later AS THEY ARE DELIVERED. Our first delivery in March will not be settled by them until early JULY as we had to get into their financial management and accounting system. This is the reason there are no boards available for any one else at the moment. We can only make so many and they all go to the same customer, who already wants more than we can provide.

When we have enough boards to spare the Image Installer Team is HIGH on the list to get them. We appreciate your work.

We have to leave out some secret sauce stuff...

We went on to explain in some things that will be happening at Smart Networks Developer Forum, Europe. The details will be found here when they are announced HERE. Friday, 1 October after SNDF, Genesi will host a special day of Pegasos Developer workshops that will filled with a full spectrum of Pegasos related programming and development issues. Matt Sealey will be coordinating developer participation for Genesi.

Finally, we also sent this email out yesterday to Resellers that defines a Pilot Program in which Genesi and its strategic partners will provide machines for various organizations and groups. You can read an edited version of the presentation Genesi Pilot Programs online. (If someone would like to clean that up for us just let Matt know...) We will be announcing a number of Pilot Programs with Avalanche in the weeks ahead and these other pilot programs as well.

Genesi continues to march ahead. Things are coming back together.

R&B

P.S.: Bounties.MorphZone.org is coming soon. (snx)

Virus Help Denmark: VirusZ v1.01 and Request for Feedback
Georg Hörmann has released version 1.01 of anti-virus software VirusZ, which may be downloaded from the website of Virus Help Team Denmark.

Request for Feedback

Georg asks urgently for feedback from VirusZ users, in order to learn how and whether his software has been used in the last 13 years. You can send Georg a message from the VHT Denmark website under the title link.

Infos about the new update:

Name: VirusZ v1.01
Archive name: VirusZ.lha
Archive size: 102,890 Bytes
Release date: 2nd June, 2004
Programmer: Georg Hoermann
Requirements: AmigaOS 2.04 or better, util/libs/ReqToolsUsr.lha, util/virus/xvslibrary.lha, util/pack/xfdmaster.lha, util/arc/xadmaster.lha (recommended), util/libs/DisLib.lha (optional)

Changes since the last release:
  • Fixed bug in Bootblock Lab which caused "Write" and "Install" to end up in a disk i/o error if "Ask Before Write Access" option was enabled. Thanks to Ronald Schakelaar for the bug report.
  • Fixed password handling for encrypted archives: a correct password has already been remembered for all files before, but cancelling the password requester because you don't know the correct password would have caused new requesters for *all* files in the encrypted archive. Now VirusZ also remembers the cancelling and will simply report all following files as encrypted. Thanks to Thomas Tavoly for reporting this problem.
  • Fixed bug that appeared after a sector check when checking disks that have the same name as their device (eg. disk labeled 'DF0' in device DF0:). Inhibit() is in fact a very simple DOS function that easily gets confused, so I added a little workaround for this problem. Thanks to Thomas Tavoly for the report and beta-testing.
  • Added lots of snapshots sent by Michel 'DMX' Bagmeijer and Andreas Kürzinger. Thanks guys. Changed distribution from FREEWARE to MAILWARE as I need feedback for further development. Currently I have no idea at all how many active users are still out there...

AFPL-Ghostscript 8.13 ported for i686-AROS
Ghostscript is for viewing + converting + printing PS & PDF files. This port is a recompile of my 68k port of AFPL Ghostscript 8.13 to a new host: i686-AROS.

Everything seems to function, except exactly 1 viewer functions which is the truecolour WB PS + PDF viewer. The other 5 viewers don't function currently, this could be an endianess problem: this being the first port of my work to a little endian architecture. The non functioning viewers just produce an empty window or the correct image but with wrong colours.

Anyway you *can* view PS + PDF in truecolour on a WB window, with correct image + correct colours, this is the most useful of the 6 possible viewers.

I will be attempting ports of the same program to other variants of AmigaOS, I have already begun towards another well known variant of AmigaOS.

If Turboprint gets ported to x86-AROS then the Turboprint devices of this port may then become of use.

To get an idea of the speed, if I install this port entirely to RAM, ie GS, GS813Data: GS813Fonts: GS813Resource: all in ram:, then converting the standard example annots.pdf to jpeg takes 4 to 5 seconds, i.e. "ram:gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=jpeg -sOutputFile=ram:annots%d.jpg ram:annots.pdf" (all on one line). RAM based is really unbelievably fast, faster than "dir ram:"!

However if installed on CD it takes much longer, not so impressive, modern PCs have so much memory that installing to RAM is quite a good idea.

I don't know if the port will run on i386, i486, i586 machines, let me know either way and if necessary I will do other versions, it should take 3.5 hours to build each of these on WinUAE.

The program was ported on WinUAE using my recent port to 68k host of gcc-3.3.1 for x86-AROS. (snx)

  • Added support for the BGRA32 colour format. PC graphics cards (like GeForce) use this mode, so UAE users can play videos on a truecolor screen (or in a window on a TrueColor Workbench) on those cards

SystemPatch: version 2.3 released
Sante Nocciolino's SystemPatch that patches several system routines to gain some system performance on Amiga computers (68020+) is now available in version 2.3.

Improvements in version 2.3 (30 KB):
  • Fixed bugs in AllocRaster(); some WB games like VChess, MineRunner, ... were saying there was not enough memory (reported by Luca "Hexaae" Longone)
  • A lot of small enhancements, minor speedups to some gfx functions and bugfixes
  • AllocRaster() patch causes probelms with games like Quake68k and BloodNet AGA, now fixed (reported by Luca "Hexaae" Longone)
  • WritePixel() bug that causes system freezing with Octamed SoundStudio when using its Synthetic Sound Editor (reported by Luca "Hexaae" Longone)
  • ENV:FAllocRasterExcludeList can contain a list of tasks to be excluded from AllocRaster() chip to fast memory promotion. I've to do a better implementation for the task exclusion of AllocRaster() patch
  • Added patches for non FBlit systems: BltBitMap(), Draw(), BltClear(). Previous BltClear() required FBlit but was installed too when FBlit was not running
  • Added: ClearScreen(), ClearEOL(), InitRastPort(), TextLength(), SetFont()
  • Other improvements I don't remember

MorphOS: Version control system Subversion 1.0.4 (Clients) ported
Subversion is a version control system, which allows you to keep old versions of files and directories (usually source code), keep a log of who, when, and why changes occurred, etc., like CVS, RCS or SCCS.

Actually Subversion is meant to be a better CVS, so it has most of CVS's features. Generally, Subversion's interface to a particular feature is similar to CVS's, except where there's a compelling reason to do otherwise.

Subversion keeps a single copy of the master sources. This copy is called the source "repository"; it contains all the information to permit extracting previous versions of those files at any time.

The current MorphOS release comes for now only with native ports of the Subversion clients: svn and svnversion. The archive also contains various documentation about Subversion in different formats including the Subversion-book (html, pdf, xml). Please note that only the documentation about the clients is relevant for now. For a next release it is planned to include the demon, apache modules and server administration tools too.

The current MorphOS release is only interesting for you if you have to deal with SVN repositories for your projects, else it might be actually quite useless - so better don't download the archive.

Note: the clients were ported by me, because I needed them for one of my projects. I use them daily for this project and they run very stable and they do the job very well (which I didn't expected after I got the 26 MB sources finally to compile). That means they are in parts untested and still could contain serious bugs or other (minor) problems could show up.

MorphOS: Status Report for the Browser "Atlantis"
At MorphZone there's a status report on the progress of the MorphOS version of Atlantis, which is the Gnome Linux web-browser by Ali 'Galaxy' Akcaagac.

The author stresses that he is unwilling and unable to predict a completion date. He shows two screenshots (1, 2) and an accompanying status report to show that he is keeping his word and the promised port is proceeding slowly but steadily.

Currently the GUI is beginning to take rough shape and the character system is almost complete. The URL string particularly is missing, as is the expected HTML class. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Cross-Compiler: gcc 3.3.1 for AmigaOS 3 creates AROS-Binaries
"whoosh" combined the sources of gcc-3.3.1-aros and gcc-3.3.3-amigaos to create a gcc version that runs under AmigaOS 3 and compiles binaries for AROS-x86. He also ported binutils-2.14.

The compiler requires a working GeekGadgets environment and the linker libraries and includes from www.aros.org/download.php. It is used like this:

i686-pc-aros-gcc-3.3.1 -march=i486 -s -O2 hello.c -o hello.o

i686-pc-aros-gcc-3.3.1 -s -march=i486 -o hello hello.o

The default target is i686, but you can create binaries for i386, i486, i586, i686, pentium or pentiumpro AROS x86 machines.

The c compiler part of the port was tried out on various graphics demos from the AROS website, all of them ran successfully. The c++ part of the port is completely untested and the author would appreciate feedback regarding this issue. (cg)

Participants had been among others:
  • Petro Tyschtschenko (said to be consultant for Gericom)
  • Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden, Timothy De Groote, Steffen Häuser (Hyperion)
  • Jens Schönfeld (Individual Computers)
  • Rakesh and Sharwin Raghoebardayal (Coyote Flux)

Alan Redhouse held a speech about his aims with the MicroA1 and why China were interested in devices with little power consumption. In addition there would be a Remote Windows Client for AmigaOS 4.0. After the speech questions could be asked but nothing of interest had been said.

Regarding the MicroA1 Alan Redhouse had said that its later sales version wouldn't be finished yet. In principal, it is planned as a shrinked form with expansion slot similar the one for the main processor to have a basis to build on depending on the specific needs.

Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden held no speech but answered questions regarding the availability of AmigaOS 4.0 with "when it's ready".

Software shown were ArtEffect 4, FreeSpace and AudioEvolution as well as some ports, especially emulators.

  • The Cocolino PS/2 Mouse Interface is a full 'plug and play' device. No software is required for standard use. The enclosed software (cocolino.driver) allows using two wheels and 3rd, 4th and 5th buttons available in many PS/2 mice and trackballs.
  • The Cocolino interface starts working simultaneous with the computer's start so mice can be used in the early-startup-menu (unlike the mice connected through the serial port).
  • Cocolino uses linear movement interpolation, which makes mouse movements perfectly smooth with any screen frame rates.
The complete press release by Elbox can be found under the title link. (snx)

Merregnon Team

Merregnon 2 - project finished!
After more than three years of development, the Merregnon 2 project is finished! The album is due to be released on 2004/05/24 in Germany.

You can pre-order your CD at shops like Amazon.de, Buch.de or Rollenspiele-shop right away, or purchase your CD at your local shop. If you live outside of Germany please refer to Music by Design Ltd. and synSoniq Records. It has been quite a journey for us, and I want to thank all of the people who are interested in our CD and have supported us with kind and helpful feedback throughout its development. We are very proud of what we have achieved, combining live orchestra music, performed by members of the Prague Symphony and the New York Philharmonic; Nine composers from all over the world who provided us with their own fantastic music, 80 minutes of the finest pieces; and six artists who painted a beautiful 28 pages booklet, telling the story of Merregnon. The work has been intense for everybody. The production required a lot of skill and ambition. (sn)

Distributed Amiga starts OGR phase 2, new clients out
As of today the distributed computing project OGR (Optimal Golomb Rulers) has gone into phase 2, which is concerned with the remaining 'micro' stubs for OGR-24 and OGR-25. This means new client builds for AmigaOS (including native OS4 PPC, WarpOS and PowerUp PPC) and native MorphOS PPC, make sure you upgrade now if you haven't already. (cg)
