individual Computers: Show report: AAA 2003, Commodore Billboard back online
This weekend, the Amiga Alpe Adria 2003
took place in Udine, Italy - another station of
Amiga OS4 on tour.
The show was organized by Cloanto,
well-known for a lot of Amiga programs and the emulator "Amiga Forever".
Jürgen Schober of Point Design
had to make two OS4 presentations, because the room was totally
overcrowded with more than 100 Amiga fans and journalists of daily
press and computer magazines. We also had the chance to show our
products in a 30-minute presentation. Best-seller of the present
retailers Soft 3 and
Virtual Works was the
Catweasel MK3,
that became the first choice accessory for many Amiga One owners
because of it's high degree of integration into the hard- and
software of the new Amiga.
A small Retro-computing museum right at the entrance of the showroom
brought back joyful memories in the visitors. Rare items like an SX-64
in best shape, a VIC-20 rev.1, and even a C65 prototype were shown.
One of the first multi-computer games (today's networking games) was
shown on two PET computers that were connected through the serial ports.
The home computer pioneer Altair 8800 from 1975 was the only none-Commodore
computer.
The "Video Microwave", a Pegasos-board that was built in the case
of a Sharp Microwave oven, was - at best - good for a laugh. The keyboard did
not work at all, and it only took a few mouseclicks to make the computer with
the MorphOS operating system crash. The reason for this could not be found in
the short time of the show.
Commodore Billboard back online
Our good news for the fans of Commodore nostalgia almost got lost in the
excitement surrounding Amiga OS4: The Commodore Billboard is back online!
The initiator of the project, Søren Ladegaard (Denmark) had to drop
the project due to lack of time in January 2003, and transferred the website
to individual Computers. We're now sponsoring the website that can cause a
lot of traffic with it's several hundred megabytes in size. During the past
half year, the new webmaster Stefan Zelazny has converted the audio and video
files to mpeg and mp3, so the website can be viewed on most platforms. For
example, the Realplayer is not necessary any more.
Currently, the website is available under the address
www.commodorebillboard.de.
The .com domain will be made available in the coming weeks.
If you're interested in a local copy of the website, you can support us in
paying for the high cost of the website by ordering the CD. It will be
available in August this year from all our retail partners for about 15,-
EUR. The double-CD package also contains some surprises for Commodore-fans! (ps)

A.D.A.: First update after two-month break
After a two-month break the demo on-line collection "Amiga Demoscene
of Archives" was extended by four new productions: "Heaven is 2d" of
Whelpz, "Dark Rain" of The Loonies, "Outgrowing" of Potion and
"Xenophobia" of Subspace.

Music: Access Virus MIDI commands for tracks&fields 0.7
I updated my virus OS to OS6.0. So there was time to fix this package
to support new commands or new values for the old ones. This don't mean
that the package is full now as I don't know every piece they changed.
It lacks also off controlling the new function called Pure tuning.
This one is only controllable from the virus menu.
The changes:
PageA: Bankselect updated. Support for more banks overwritten the demo.
PageB: Arpegiattor. More patterns to choose from.
PageC: Partbankselect and Partbankchange for the new banks.
That's all. Why do I update this package? Because of still using T&F

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 14
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 14 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) ssolie: With the services based approach you are proposing, will an application be expected to query capabilities or will AmigaOS automatically adapt to the hardware itself or some hybrid of the two? Depending on the application, some may not appreciate having to query the OS every time they want to do something versus letting the OS adapt itself to the application and hardware environment.
Fleecy: In all multi component systems there will always be a per component capability and requirement set. Traditional static systems work on assumption which tends to give them superior performance as long as those assumptions are always true. In the world of today, we have a huge level of dynamism - smartphones, PDAs, consoles, tablets, desktops, servers, fat pipes, thin pipes, hardware acceleration, processor speed, screen size, input controls etc and you are faced with the problem of how to map these from the physical domain into the digital domain.
A service based architecture doesn't really affect this in implimentation since it is just a model. For example I could query the graphics service to find out if it supplies a vector service and if it does then I can chose to use it or not. This can be done dynamically by the application or can be done at install time, which is no different from the situation now where, if you assume that MUI is installed, and it isn't then your application won't work.
Thus you will still have different options as a developer - you can make use of services which themselves adapt on your behalf or you can do that yourselves. In either case, there is always going to be the same question, where does the responsibility lie? We want to offer choice so that the developer can make those decisions. A good example is the Ami2D scaling services of the AmigaDE. Some people use them and some people prefer to create resolution dependent graphic sets.
What is needed is a further level of abstraction, so that capabilities and requirements are managed transparently and that is coming on board now with such things as vectorisation and other descriptive formats that allow for interpretation based upon semantic information. That is something we are looking at but the more abstraction you have, the more resources are required to translate between the physical and digital domains.
Swings and roundabouts I'm afraid.
2) CodeSmith: Apple have made a big splash with their announcement of PPC970 "G5" systems. Is there going to be a "zico-2" spec for Amiga PPC970 systems, or are you giving vendors full control? any idea when we can expect PPC 970 Amigas (other than "after OS4.0")?
Fleecy: We do plan on having a 64 bit version of the AmigaOS but that is someway down the line. If a vendor approaches us with the necessary hardware then we will consider revising our timetable but we still have a lot of work to do for the 32 bit PPC AmigaOS4, such as actually releasing AmigaOS4.0. There are also a few interesting other 32 bit opportunities coming up that will have to weighed against a 64 bit desktop machine.
3) Quixote: Since AmigaOS4.0 will be on the CyberStormPPC first, I wonder whether it will include an update to the CyberStorm's FlashROM, that would permit booting from the CD? I understand that it was a feature intended for the CyberStorm, but it doesn't seem to work.
Fleecy: We do not intend to touch the CSPPC flashrom. Its internals are proprietary and besides, we are relying on it to bring the HW up first before AmigaOS4.0 takes over. Any changes we made might also damage the users ability to boot into AmigaOS3 as well.
If you have problems with the CSPPC Flashrom, perhaps an email to those who worked on it might reveal why it doesn't work or get them to add that functionality.
4) Miffy: I run AmigaDE on my desktop ( the one I am typing on now ) which has software on it that I have ported, that others have ported and the like. It runs the partypack update. What I want to know is how long before the next publically available ( non NDA ) update comes along from Amiga given I cannot get permission to enter into a new NDA with Amiga Inc right now ( because of company regulations and Im sure others are in this position too )?
Fleecy: We are reworking our NDA policy to make it consistent with industry practices for software licensing. In the meanwhile if special circumstances prevent you from agreeing to the licensing terms, you can contact us directly to determine how best we can meet your needs. 5) Asemoon: I very much like the idea of being able to use animated GIFs as icons on the desktop with the introduction of Amiga OS3.9 and so will this feature stay available or maybe be enhanced/altered in any way for AmigaOS4? And will there be support for 24bit PNG format icons in the future?
Fleecy: The source code for that particular feature is in the hands of H&P and we do not have access to it.
The Amiga graphics architecture has reached the end of its useful life. Actually, it reached it about five years ago but has been brought back, jiggled, enhanced and hacked to stop the platform from dying. The screenshots you are seeing as part of the AmigaOS4.0 on Tour roadshow represent hopefully the last AmigaOS release that uses this architecture and their quality is a reflection of both the strength of the original architecture and the ingenuity and persistence of the developers since then who have worked on it.
As part of the Amiga Generation 2 project (AG2), we are currently working on a brand new visual domain replacement which we hope to deploy either in AmigaOS4.1 or AmigaOS4.2. This will build from the hardware upwards and be able to support high quality existing interface models as well as allow for brand new features, functionality and models. We are particularly eager to introduce the Reactive Presentation Agents (RPAs) that we developed for the AmigaDE which would provide the same functionality, and a lot more besides.
6) Asemoon: What languages will AmigaOS4 support out of the box?
Fleecy: We are supporting many languages, which are listed below, using a combination of the excellent ATO and private individuals, working in teams of two or more to produce each catalog. We do have a few offers where we just have one person (Icelandic and Malay) but we would like to have at least two people, since it is a lot of work. If you are missing a language that can be written from left to right in an ISO-8859-X charset just ask Detlef at TetiSoft@apg.lahn.de if he can create a language driver for it.
7) Asemoon: The support for non-Latin fonts like for instance Arabic/Persian and Chinese/Japanese characters were not well documented for previous AmigaOS releases. How will such characters and languages be handled by future AmigaOS and AmigaDE releases?
Fleecy: Not well documented is too optimistic :) It was documented that the Amiga character set is ECMA-94 Latin1 (thats ISO-8859-1), that the bullet.library API uses Unicode (16bit only), and it was defined a font attribute FPF_REVPATH for writing from right to left. There was no official statement from H&P how their special localizations for e.g. czech or russian would fit into this framework (in fact they did not). There was a statement that the Euro update is only an intermediate solution.
OS4 bullet API was improved and allows 32bit Unicode now, 16bit are not enough since Unicode 3.2 (current is 4.0).
OS4 diskfont.library now contains a character set database, it does know the MIME charset name of each font in the system, and the Unicode code point of each glyph. However the bitmap fonts handled by diskfont.library are still limited to 8bit charsets, so for Chinese/Japanese/Persian/Georgian etc you'll have to use bullet API. With the new diskfont API you can however ask for e.g. Times in ISO-8859-5 (cyrillic), -6 (arabic), -7 (greek), -8 (hebrew), -11 (thai) or -16 (eastern european latin with Euro) and it will create it on-the-fly from e.g. a truetype font.
With OS4 locale.library the user is able to change the current system default charset on-the-fly by selecting a different language driver. The charset of each catalog file in the system is known, there exist charset conversion functions that ensure that e.g. for polish with ISO-8859-2 system default charset any polish catalog file will be displayed correct, it does not matter if its in ISO-8859-2, -16 or in the special ATO charset used in OS3.9 polish localization. Its also possible to use catalog files in UTF-8.
Most text handling and output functions in OS4 are not able to write from right to left, so there still exist large problems with arabic/persian and hebrew, an application that reverses arabic and hebrew strings before output can at least display its GUI but for text input (cursor on the right after return) special applications would be needed.
Summary: OS3.x language support was limited to western european latin languages, OS4.0 language support is limited to latin, cyrillic and greek (thai would eventually work if someone could fit thai glyphs into topaz/8 and topaz/9 default ROM fonts). OS4.0 font support is limited to any 8bit MIME charset in diskfont API (besides the right-to-left problem) and not limited in bullet API.
8) _Steve_: Will there be support for the pre-existing PPC programs from both PUP/WOS in OS4?
Fleecy: We'll provide an application launcher that can launch WarpUp programs, maybe even PowerUp. However, we'll not include any hacks to make this work. Since there was only a small number of applications created that used these two systems, we are hopefully that their authors will upgrade their programs and release AmigaOS4.0 native versions.
9) Billsey: From past personal experience I know that there are dedicated Christians at Amiga, Inc. I have friends there, and I am not turning against them, but they are Christian, so I believe that the following question(s) must be asked. I would like to know what role that faith has played (a) in keeping the company alive; (b) in walking the path that has been walked; and (c) when specific confession and, more importantly, repentance of “mistakes made” will be observable.
Fleecy: Religion, like any other philosophy seller is an individual concern, not something that should ever be part of heterogenous system, whether a group, a company, a nation or a species. I always find it ironic that nature, the mother of us all preaches diversity and yet humans are obsessed with monotony, to the point of coercion, persecution, discrimination and destruction.
With that in mind, I cannot and will not answer your question, because such things should be on individual level interaction. In other words, if you want an answer, send the question to the individuals themselves.
10) drstrange: what form of support will OS4 take for a 250MB ZIP? Will it use harddrive-like formatting or a mountfile and if a mountfile could you show us it ahead of time to give a few of us time to prep our disks.
Fleecy: Same as OS3.9 (or 3.1): it's a removable media, 'Removable' and 'Rigid Disk Block' are mutually exclusive, you should use a mountfile.
To be able to use RDBs on removable media as well all file systems would have to support unmounting. The new FFS2 does support it, but there are file systems which don't, for example SFS.
Some 3rd party devices do allow RDBs to be used on removable media, but that's a hack, it's not possible to implement it in clean way and therefore it will not be added to AmigaOS4.0 devices.

Yesterday the scene group Liquid Skies published its 44th music pack.
This time it contains a music piece called "Walking The Corridors" by the English
musician Darkus who, though not being a member of the group, still offers his
track as a guest under the label Liquid Skies.
It is a rather experimental piece of music and would probably fit best under the
category of Trance. This time the cover was created by DaFreak.

* Now the filename length also displays the length of the
file comment (which cannot be more than 80 characters in
AmigaDOS).
The format is now <filename_length;comment_length> in the
window. Also, the file comment gets /italic/ in the main
lister if it exceeds 79 characters.
* Added the operator %t for use in the text export and file
comment generation tools. This stands for tab. Whenever a %t
is encountered a tab stop is set there which gets determind by
the longest string up to the %t. Many %t's can be used in an
export string. This way very nice columnized text files and
file comments can be produced!
* The memo list handling (in the RenPlacer, File Comment and
Text Export tools) now saves the memo lists immediately when
stored or removed if the checkmark in prefs is set. This makes
it easier to not forget to save then when quitting the proram
:)
* Updated the ID3-Tag plugin so that it always returns two
digits for the track number. F.ex. 01,02,03...10,11,etc
instead of 1,2,3...10,11 which makes it look nicer.

Info: * The move draw area qualifiers Shift and Alt has now been
reduced to only work with RightShift and RightAlt.

Warp Datatypes V45.2 Released (Update)
After a long delay, the promised updates to all the Warp picture datatypes for 68k, WarpOS and MorphOS are finally here. To accompany the new release is the brand new WarpDT portal at http://www.warpdt.co.uk/ where you can keep up to date with the latest versions of the WarpDTs and download them all in one easy place.
Summary of changes since previous versions:
BMP/JPEG/PNG/TIFF: Minor optimizations and cleanups.
BMP/JPEG/PNG/TIFF: Bumped version to v45 since a stable release has
now been reached and to reflect the jump to shareware status
BMP: Fixed problems with decoding bitfield images
JPEG: Altered descriptor file to prevent it matching LhA or LZX
archives containing JPEG files (or anything else that might
contain a JFIF header, other than Photoshop files)
PNG: PNG files not containing enough data are no longer treated as a
fatal error. Now the part of the image that was successfully
decoded is returned.

Tomorrow: Amiga Alpe Adria 2003 in Udine, Italy
For the last time the website of the Amiga Alpe Adria 2003 which will take place tomorrow
in Udine, Italy has been updated. The list of the presentations has been updated as well as
the list of the hardware and software which can be seen.
This week the organizer got the offer to exhibit a Commodore PET 4016 which is connected
with a PET 3008. Of course this offer was accepted. Besides this a Commodore 65 (a prototype
which was never released) will be shown.
In Austria Jürgen Schober is busy with the last preparations for the AmigaOS 4.0 presentation
while in Germany Jens Schönfeld prepares himself for the C-One presentation.
Genesi has made a PowerPC Pegasos with MorphOS which was installed in a microwave available.
Many people from all over the world have booked for and are on the way.

The American software company Grasshopper has lowered the price of their desktop publishing application "PageStream." The full
version is now available for 99 US dollars. Upgrades are now 40 US dollars. These prices are good for July, 2003 but may stay the
same thereafter, if possible.
New Low Pricing
Tuesday, July 1st - Grasshopper LLC announces today new low pricing
for PageStream on all platforms. "While the pricing is guaranteed only
through July, it is hoped that it will be warmly embraced by the
community and will be adopted then as our new permanent pricing",
said owner Marna Holt today. "Our move from a brick and mortar business
means lower costs and faster turn around times. We hope passing these
savings on to our customers will not only increase the already tremendous
value our customers get when buying PageStream, but hopefully increase
the number of customers and reach those who could previously not afford
PageStream." Near term plans include a revamped web site,
instant messaging with our sales staff, and a monthly online public chat
with Deron. PageStream now lists for $99 (from $299!!) and upgrades start
out at only $40.

The adventure-game focused online magazine "Adventure-Treff" has published an interesting German-language interview with Ken
Williams by Jan Schneider.
In 1979 Ken Williams founded Sierra On-Line and after that he led the firm for almost 20 years. Ken and his wife Roberta originated
the game genre now referred to as graphic adventures, and they were responsible for many of the best and most loved adventures
of all time, like for instance the Leisure Suit Larry and King's Quest and Space Quest series. Today Ken runs a forum with

Study: Online Shops Battle Trust Deficit
Around 50% of German websurfers avoid purchasing anything on the Internet. The main problem for most of them: they can't examine and test the products before buying. And very third person gets by without online purchases because they are satisfied with the goods of "real" stores.
The fear of someone stealing their personal data is another factor that stops surfers from buying. About 30% name this fear as a reason for why they have yet to purchase anything online. And every fifth person is worried that his bill will be incorrectly calculated and so he doesn't buy anything. These figures come from a current study "Internet Statistics of Consumers (IZV6)" done by the University of Karlsruhe and Mummert Consulting.
Online shops battle a trust deficit: Half of all German websurfers don't buy anything on the Internet. The principal reason for this, according to these surfers, is that they can't test the wares over the Internet. Every fourth purchase avoider doesn't trust the online stores because it might be hard to complain and return things. Almost every third fears for the protection of his data. The market share of online shoppers may rise if e-shops improve their service. About 28% don't buy online, because help and service aren't good enough.
It's easier for well known web-shops to win customers: about two thirds of online shoppers do most of their shopping by known merchants. Every fifth buys *exclusively* by known shops. And the general experience of Internet users with the Internet influences their purchasing attitude: the less experienced the surfer, the less he goes online shopping. Experienced users purchase 20% more stuff on the Internet than the unexperienced. (nba) (Translation: dm)

Genesi: Explanation of G4 Card Difficulties
According to a statement
of the Genesi leadership on MorphOS-News.de there's a hardware problem which means that less G4 cards will be produced for the Pegasos I, and even these will only be offered with corresponding boards as "matched sets." With respect to the complete utilization of the Altivec functionality of the G4: some boards work flawlessly, some boards not so well, at least not well enough to be sold.
In other Genesi news, QNX and Pascal have joined the effort to be ported to Pegasos. The latter is still popular in Eastern Europe and the former is the #1 embedded system OS.
Additionally Genesi would like to sell Linux Pegasoses with the G3 for a price of 499 euros at MicroWarehouse
or other merchants (without monitor but with Linux as well as MorphOS). Up to 25,000 units monthly may be produced on the fabrication lines at DCE. This price per unit might fall with an inverse correlation to the quantity of units (as more are produced, price per unit drops). The same thing applies if IBM comes to view it as a good strategy to help Genesi by doing the same with respect to CPU price. These machines will be available in October of this year.
As before, Pegasos I owners can upgrade for the price of 200 euros, but you've got to send in the board as well as the CPU card. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Game: Saga Version 1.27
Version 1.27 of the freeware game Saga from Amigan Software has appeared. The game is a conversion of a TSR board game from 1981 called Saga: Age of Heroes and is playable by up to six players, which may be controlled by humans or the Amiga. It's all about battling monsters, finding treasure, and building your kingdom through valor and heroism.
The game is available in German and English at this time. It requires at least AmigaOS 3.0+ and AGA/RTG. The source code is in the archive. The author James R. Jacobs has made a few improvements and cleaned up a few errors since the last version.

AmiZilla progress report
After DiscreetFX had announced that there is a money booty for porting the
web browser Mozilla to the Amiga (as reported) and Bill
Panagouleas set up an information site about the donation efforts, he sent us the following progress report:

AmiZilla port.

- Mailinglist now has over 162 members and over 240 messages, most are about programming and porting Mozilla.
- AmiZilla website has gotten over 1 million hits since appearing on the famous unix geek website slashdot.
- AmiZilla continues to gather positive press for the Amiga and MorphOS by being covered on mainstream
websites like CNET's news.com,
mozillazine.org and
many others.
- Amiga Inc. representative Fleecy Moss has commented they like AmiZilla but will not contribute
to the Initiative because a port is also underway for MorphOS.
- New! AmiZilla poster "I Want You" by Eric Schwartz available in two sizes for webmasters that
want to promote AmiZilla on their site.
- New! AmiZilla Banner designed by Luca Ferraris.
- New! Female Russian artist hired to create mascot for MorphOS version of Mozilla port.
- New! Genesi and Phoenix Developer Consortium have been watching the project with great interest for
some time. and may contribute funds.
Keep in mind that the AmiZilla Project needs you to be successful. The booty is now over $4122,
which is a impressive amount of money for an Amiga project. If only one programmer was working on
the port this would be a nice reward. However several programmers are working together. Once the
money is split among coders the booty is not big enough. Please contribute if you can, every dollar
helps motivate programmers to make the AmiZilla Project a success. After the release of AmiZilla more
projects are being developed like Hot CoCo (JVM) and F Gordon (Flash). The development and launch of

First European games mucic concert in Leipzig
On August the 20th 2003 there will be the first "European games music concert" in Germany. This will happen at the "Gewandhaus" in Leipzig .
Start of the concert, which will be the opening of the "Games Convention" as well, is 8 pm.
Ticket sale has just begun, there are still plenty tickets available.
Among other tracks there will be a suite of the Amiga classic
"Apidya" (Chris Hülsbeck) played.

Report: Pegasos in Leipzig
Several interested persons have seen the presentation of the Pegasos in Leipzig at the booth of the "CCLS e.V." last weekend.
Erhard Bruse gives a brief overview about the presentation:
Even by chance met informatics students from India were interested in MorphOS and the Pegasos. The Sunday was owed to the Pegasos and Linux.
Micha Heider successfully did first tests with his image installer and a backup/recovery by using a hard disk image as well as an
installation of Mandrake Linux to the Pegasos. The recovery took with a 4 GB partition about 10 minutes.
During the next days there will be further information and some pictures and screen shots of Mandrake running on the Pegasos
put to the website of Micha Heider which is to reach by the title link.

ptplay3 is
relased in version 1.0. ptplay is a CLI based Protracker player not depending on the
custom chips and was written from the ground to emulate Protracker 2.3a software
sided. The mixing is managed internally and is send to a singla AHI output channel.

Development of SBase4Pro
Russ Norrby of Mr. Hardware Computers, the owners of the "SBase4Pro"-rights (formerly known as "SuperBase 4 Pro"), reports at Amiga.org:
"SBase4Pro can now be compiled with the GCC. This puts us into the position
to provide PPC versions - for example for the AmigaOne.
The current version is v1.36 from April 2000. SBase4Pro is
a very powerful and flexible multi-relational data base. Some of our own
products were made using SBase, for example Retail Escort and Video Escort.
At present we are working on many improvements, for example on HTML outputs or
the possibility to lock files.

Pictures from Amiga Show in Maarssen, NL
Martin Heine was nice enough to provide us with some meaningful
pictures from the
Amiga Show which took place
yesterday in Maarssen in Holland.
The photos were taken by Ron van Herk.
The event was well attended with more than 100 visitors. Genesi presented the
Video Microwave, the prototype of an STB case already known from the CeBIT and
of course the Pegasos with MorphOS in action. On four Pegasos computers as well
as an Debian equipped AmigaOne the visitors could form their own impression of
the current state of the two systems. Furthermore beta versions of Bars'n'Pipes
and FotoFoto for MorphOS were shown. The possibility to buy Pegasos boards at
the ComputerCity stall was also made use of. Furthermore the Access was shown
as well as Amiga merchandising goods such as the game "Amiopoly", Amiga antenna
balls for cars and mugs and T-Shirts from the OS4 tour.

Lego Mindstorms for Amiga
Today I have released the Amiga port of NQC 2.5 r1 on my homepage.
With this it is for the first time possible on the Amiga, among other things, to program the Lego Mindstorms RCX. This can be used to control robots built with Lego bricks.
NQC (Not Quite C) is a language similar to C for the programming of these RCX stones. Furthermore is the communication via the serial interface and via USB (with Poseidon) supported.

Tool: SRename Version 3.7.1
Constantinos Nicolakakis has published the final version 3.7.1 of the tool 'SRename'.
With this tool which works from AmigaOS 3.0+ you can easily rename files. In the new
version some new features have been added and bugs fixed:
New features:
Added "Filename" (fn) selector to specify filenames that should be
treated like filenames even if they contain wildcard characters.
Normally SRename can process such filenames in recursion mode but only
if they are present in the root directory, if they are not they are
treated as wildcard patterns.
"Filename" makes it possible to look for and rename such filenames in
recursion mode even if those filenames aren't present in the root
directory.
Added secondary arguments to "Dirpat":
"Androot" (ar) causes the filenames in the starting (root) directory to
also be renamed.
"Anddirname" (adn) causes the name of the directory that is entered with
Dirpat to also be renamed.
Removed "Persistentdp" that was used together with "Dirpat" because it's
behaviour is now the default for "Dirpat". Not having a persistent
pattern for entering directories didn't have much use.
Recursion can now be used with non-wildcards, for example giving an
ordinary filename to look for.
Bugfixes:
Corrected a bug in recursion where directories weren't always entered
with "Dirpat" if the names of those directories were also to be
modified.
To avoid this situation now directories are first entered and their
contents renamed, and the names of those directories are modified
afterwards.
Other changes:
The shell output has slightly changed in some instances.
The recursion bugfix has also caused slight changes to the shell output
in recursion, such as that the name of a directory has to be printed
again to avoid confusion if subdirectories in that directory were
entered and filenames in that same directory are also to be renamed.

Report from AUGS Meeting / OS4 on Tour in Basel
The official report from AUGS Meeting 2003 in Basel is online, with pictures from Caspar Schlegel (AUGS).
The meeting itself was enjoyable for the organizers (Claude Müller/AUGS
and Jürgen Schober/point.design).
The AUGS team was happily surprised that they actually had to bring in more chairs for the OS4 presentation, which they did with pleasure.
Locally, the way to the currently largest Commodore logo in the world was described: in "Aesch" not far from Basel one finds such a logo over 9 meters tall, where it has been for many years at the former headquarters of Commodore Switzerland.

Event: Pegasos board presentation in Leipzig
On June the 28th and 29th 2003 there will be a presentation of more tan 160 clubs and organizations from Leipzig
held at the central railstation of Leipzig.

are working, there will be a working Pegasos computer shown on both days.

The freeware Report+ is now available in version 5.67. The tool
bases on ReAction/GadTools needs AmigaOS 3.9 and offers ten different functions:
For example it's possible with Report+ to create Aminet readme files, the
Commodore bug reporting tool can be replaced by it or the ammount of bytes for any directory can be shown.
Within the new version some bugs have been removed, the IFF displayer is now capable of "IFF SPLT"
forms and within the Aminet readme editor the directory tree has been updated.

DENIC restricts access of Domain information data
Starting from July 2003 the DENIC will restrict the number of whois-requests with an automatic system to a limited time interval to avoid mass requests.
DENIC as registry for domains below .de provides several information systems, which can be used to find out whether
a domain is already registered and if yes, to who. These services are heavily used. Since DENIC has recently
increased its technical capacities about 6000 to 7000 requests are answered per minute. According to an analysis
the registry more than 90% of these requests do not serve the purpose of determining the status of a domain or its
owner once. Rather they are for checking continually in extremely short time intervals whether a certain domain is still
registered, in order to register it immediately in the case of a deletion.
"We see less of a problem in overloading our systems, because we can handle the high number of requests technically
without any difficulties. However, the excessive usage of the whois service by certain users causes costs, which
at this point have to be shared between all domain owners", describes DENIC board member Andreas Bäß
the background of these steps. "Another problem is the unlimited access to these directories in relation to
the detection and prevention of Distributed Denial of Service Attacks. A limitation of the maximum number of requests
from an address block solves both problems. Because then we can determine a threshold, upwards of which we assume
an abuse of the services. However, we also want to motivate the intensive users to talk to us in order to mutually
find an alternative way to satisfy their information needs."
Therefore, starting July 1st, DENIC will regulate the usage of whois requests more strongly. In addition to the
above mentioned limitation of the number of requests, the owner data will in the future be only accessible by
way of additional parameters. For those requests the number of requests per time unit will be reduced further in
order to better protect the domain owners from an automatic utilisation of their address data. (ps) (Translation: ub)

Genesi: MPC 7447 for Pegasos G4 processorcard chosen
As announced on PegasosPPC.com
their choice is made to use the Motorola MPC 7447 for the Pegasos G4 processor modules.
Additionaly it is newly confirmed that these cards will be available from July on.
"This summer processor cards with Motorola's 7447,
which work with 1 GHz and higher, will meet the Pegasos. The 7447 is the most recent
PowerPC processor of the fourth generation (G4) by Motorola, which offers an improved performance compared to the predecessor
generation (G3).
Additional to an increased cache the 7447 offes more pipelines, an improved Front-Side-Bus (FSB)
and most important an SIMD unit called Altivec. Altivec offers a
special on-chip vector engine which is capable of delivering more than one
Gflops (one billion floating point operations per second) and still being affordable to an average user.
G4 upgrades will be available from July 2003."

2.27: Port for MorphOS in progress
As reported on morphos-news.de, 'Yomgui' Amiga Impact says his Blender-Port for MorphOS
makes good progress. Look a this screenshot. Yomguis
port uses Jungl, the Mesa implement for MorphOS.
What is Blender? It is a 3D suite of the Dutch company Nan. With Blender you can create
3D objects, render as picture, or animate it. It also includes a 3D-Engine you can
create for example interactive websites in 3D.

20 June 2003: The LZW patent expires today in the United States.
However, patents on LZW are still in force in other countries.
Please continue to refrain from using GIFs. More importantly, do
not allow your communications to be censored by the whims of
patent holders. Things you can do:
- Oppose the expansion of software patents to your country, if such
patents are not available there now.
- Insist that standards bodies in which you participate make an an
"innovation compatible" (IC) license a requirement for any patents
needed to implement a standard.
- Develop and support software that works with non-patented file
formats and network protocols, instead of patent-encumbered ones.
Sign the petition against software patents in Europe.

Multimedia Authoring System: Malibu Version 1.0
Malibu 1.0 - the Scala plugin for Hollywood - is out now. When Malibu is
installed, Hollywood will suddenly be able to display your Scala presentations.
The compatibility is very high. You can run almost every Scala script. In
24-bit of course and absolutely RTG friendly! You can even compile your
Scala presentations to AmigaOS executables or native MorphOS executables!
A truly unique feature! Malibu is available in a version for AmigaOS3 as well
as in a native MorphOS PPC version. Malibu requires at least Hollywood 1.5
and can be ordered in a discounted bundle together with the Hollywood 1.5
update or the Hollywood 1.5 full version.
-Introduction-
Malibu is a plugin for Hollywood which contains an import filter for Scala
presentations. As soon as Malibu is installed, Hollywood will suddenly be
able to show Scala presentations or compile them.
With Malibu it is now possible for the first time to display Scala presentations
on Workbench screen or on your own public screen. Because the whole
emulation runs on top of Hollywood's multimedia application layer everything
will be first converted to 24-bit and then displayed. In many cases the quality
of the pictures that Malibu displays is much better than the original Scala quality
because Scala often had to remap many pictures with very different colors
to a 8-bit display which resulted in a massive loss of color information.
Malibu emulates nearly the whole Scala command set and supports all
Scala versions up to Scala InfoChannel 500 which was the last Amiga version
of Scala. Emulation is done by the elCapitan microkernel which tries to
achieve the best performance possible on the used system. For example,
the next page is already calculated while the current page is on the display.
Complex transition effects can also be pre-calculated and then displayed
smoothly.
Scala is a program which helped the Amiga to become a real Multimedia
wonder. There were no products for a long long time that could beat an
Amiga with Scala. Therefore Scala was widely used in all different production
fields, from movies and television to big shows. Everyone who has worked
with Scala knows what powers it has. But this power is only possible
because Scala is very hard coded to the Amiga's custom chips which
leads to the problem that it does not run on graphics boards and also has
some other major problems with today's Amiga systems. For many years
all sorts of users complained that there is no Scala that runs RTG compatible.
This time is over now. Scala revives with the Malibu plugin: On the Workbench?
Of course. In 24-bit? You can bet your life on that. Always RTG conform? Absolutely.

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 13
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 13 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) MetalJoe: Previous versions of the OS have had official support for C and Assembler developers. What languages (i.e. C, Assembler, C++, Objective-C) will be officially supported in the initial OS 4 SDK and which, if any, are planned for future 4.x releases?
Fleecy: C and C++ will be supported in the first instance. We are talking with third parties about other support (Basic, Forth, and some others). We are more interested in getting a comprehensive toolchain and documentation in place before we start considering other language support.
2) Rudei: Can you clarify that the Amiga trademarks are indeed safe and still licenced to Amiga Inc? There has been a lot of malicious talk recently and it would be helpful to have an official line so we can quash the rumours once and for all.
Fleecy: Our attorney tells us that everything is as it should be. You will never quash the rumours because the reason for them is mischief and as long as they are people out there wanting to cause mischief, then there will be rumours. We just keep quiet and get on with it.
3) Dandy: Will DRM (digital rights management) and/or TCPA have any impact on AmigaOs-platform and if so, of what kind will this impact be? (As I understood it, it will be forbidden to advertise or sell hardware within the USA which does not include/support TCPA)
Fleecy: DRM is something that many OEMs are asking for as well as many developers who are tied of losing sales via piracy.
However it is still a very fluid and unsure area in both legal and technical application and it is not at a point where we have to give it much general consideration, just on a per customer basis.
4) hnl_dk: What do you think of the outcome, of the "OS4.0 on tour 2003" until now?
Fleecy: I think it has been very good. The fact that dealers and user groups worked together to organise it is a testament to the power of the Amiga community, where everything doesn't have to be driven by the centre. Jurgen and the others have done a great job and it has started some lively debate about the new default interface and praise for many of the new graphical features. That alone has caused a huge increase in requests for information and registrations of interest from around the world. For those who have stood fast through all the rumours about how it will never happen, then it will never work, it must be giving them a good feeling to see that their trust was not misplaced. The power of Amiga is about getting through the bad times as well as the good times and the supporters, the AmigaOS4.0 team and the community in general has come into its own and from here on, things will accelerate towards launch and rebirth of the platform.
5) Wain: What does the current AmigaOS roadmap plan in regards to upgrade costs? Do we pay full retail cost for every OS version up to 5 and after? I realize none of this is set in stone.
Fleecy: For AmigaOS4, this is the most likely although we are considering some form of product subscription as well, wrapped up with extra services and support.
6) Turbo: Is the aim for Amiga OS4 to be exclusive to AmigaOne based hardware? If not, how will this manifest itself? Will it run on top of intent? Could it be ported to custom hardware like you would find in say... a PlayStation 3?
Fleecy: The AmigaOS4 product family will run on any PPC solution that is certified by Amiga. We have several customers in various stages of negotiation as to getting AmigaOS4 onto their products. AmigaOne is the only desktop. The Amiga Generation 2 (AG2) product represents the next stage of developing core Amiga technology that can then be used in various product lines, including the AmigaOS and the AmigaDE. The ultimate aim of AG2 is to have a core technology pool that is hardware agnostic and which implements advanced technologies that can be used anywhere we want and which, most importantly can span the different types of devices to create a single environment for OEMs, developers and users.
7) pods: I know of people who have expressed disapointment of the current workbench and icons libraries implementation. Has there been schedules, or has there been talk about replacing these implementation with something more up to date?
Fleecy: The development of AmigaOS4 had a very strict priority. Encapsulate hardware dependencies to create an abstraction, move and then enhance the core of the AmigaOS into this abstraction and then replace Amiga Generation 1 domains by Amiga Generation 2 technology. AmigaOS4.0 is dealing admirably with moving our platform from a 68k and custom chip based solution to a modern PPC, modular subsystem hardware model. In doing that, it is far more important for us to ensure that the foundations are made solid, efficient and then improved.
graphics.library, layers, intuition and Workbench are all very old services that have been hacked and patched beyond even the wildest dreams of Dr Frankenstein. The fact that it all still works and that it can be made to look even better is a testament not just to the far sightedness of the original designers but also the the immense skill and knowledge of the AmigaOS4.0 team.
However, one of the AG2 projects currently underway is for the entire visual domain, 2D, 3D, Video and User Environment and we are working hard to ensure that most if not all of that technology will be in AmigaOS4.1. You can be sure that we will keep the community apprised and show off some of the visual delights to come as soon as we can.
8) Sbaitso: Are you familiar with the Amizilla project? What are your feelings about it? Is there any chance Amiga, Inc. may contribute to the cause?
Fleecy: I think it is another great example of the Amiga community in action and putting its money where its mouth is to improve and extend the platform. We will not contribute to the cause because it is a third party effort and also because if the rules of the project are correct, then we would be supporting potential competitors as well.
However, the most important reason is because a brand new, world class HTML rendering solution is one of elements of AmigaOS4.1.
9) Asemoon: Are Amiga's PDA game packages selling well at CompUSA stores and will they become available at stores in Europe?
Fleecy: They appear to have sold out in most stores in the US and we are in negotiations with Microsoft both to extend the number of cards and the volume of cards. We are talking with other vendors who themselves want to sell the Gamecards and some of these are active in the European market. We'll post more details when we can.
10) Asemoon: Will there be any alternative themes included on the AmigaOS4 CD?
Fleecy: It is something that is being considered but we want to at least have one that is complete before considering adding others.

OS4 Tour Basle: Short report
Yesterday the Amiga OS4 Tour stopped by in the centre of Basle. Several times
did Jürgen Schober of pointdesign hold
a presentation with subsequent question time on the event organised by the Amiga
User Group Switzerland (AUGS). One of the
presentations was even translated live for the numerous French speaking Amiga
fans by a member of the Club Annuaire Amiga Francophone.
Due to the large number of visitors (from Switzerland, France, Germany and
Holland), the interesting performances and the good mood AUGS as organisers are
very satisfied with the course of the meeting and warmly thank all those involved.

Chris Perver has rewritten the Wordworth plugin for his text viewer
EvenMore.
Here is the original anouncement:
"Rewrote WordWorth plugin. Will now pick up command packets, and will

seems more complicated. Colour support now added to the WordWorth plugin."
Emulator: UAE-X Version 0.8 - Amiga-Emulator for X-Box
You can emulate an Amiga 500 or Amiga 1200 on your X-Box with
UAE-X. UAE-X has been released under
General Public Licence. The Micorosft XBOX XDK is required for compiling.
Besides the new version 0.8 you'll find extensive information and some
screenshots under the title link.
New in version 0.8:
- SnaX: added config selection. uae config files are now in /configs/
-SnaX & Zhevon: XBOX Keyboard support!
- Schlauchi: better default config file (old savestates might be

TTEngine is a TrueType Font
based text rendering environment for AmigaOS. Author Grzegorz Kraszewski has
ported the program to MorphOS. It has been tested on a standard Pegasos with a
G3/600 MHz. "TTEngine achieves over 12000 cps in JAM1 mode and over
20000 cps in JAM2 mode on 24-bit screen and Voodoo3 PCI board, which is over
150% faster compared to emulated 68k version. NOTE: TTEngine MOS requires
MorphOS 1.3 or newer."

Software: AntiSPAM 2 now with 70% hit rate (update)
AntiSPAM 2 is finished: the new version of the spam killer works on a new basis and reaches now a dramatically improved hit rate of measured 70%.
Features of AntiSPAM 2 (excerpt):
- It analyses spams by the frequency of words.
- It needs no remote filters.
- It is much easier to install.
- It works parallel with YAM and doesn't block it anymore.
- It also works offline or in conjunction with other clients.
- It has a white list to prevent unwanted deleting.
- A manual finetuning is possible.

- AmigaOne - Amiga computer with G3 or G4 PowerPC microprocessor, works

Apple: Specifications of the new models with PPC970 CPU
Several news services (such as OSNews)
reported that today the official online-shop of Apple
has announced the exact specifications of the new computer models of Apple.
This might have been a mistake because meanwhile the new models have been deleted from
the website.

in the files section. It is called "pre-release" because many but not all OS-parts
are considered.

Today, the MorphOS Developer Connection (MDC) officially opens its doors.
Every developer working on MorphOS-related projects is welcome and encouraged to become a free member of the MorphOS Developer Connection.
What is the MDC?
The MorphOS Developer Connection (MDC) is mainly a communication and support platform that serves as a central interface between general third party developers and Genesi.
It aims at supporting third party projects and developers interested in development or actively developing for MorphOS with information and organizational infrastructure (if needed).
What are the benefits?
If you join the MDC, you have, among others, the following benefits:
- access to the MorphOS SDK, including documentation, MorphED and a complete GCC-based compiler environment

Status Report on the Development of UltraBUS
Massimo Mancini, owner of Creative Development, has reported after a long period of radio silence on the status of the development of the UltraBUS.
Because of some hardware damage the Zorro-II-based USB controller received only limited development in the last three months. The development on the project has 100% recommenced after a successful repair of a defective Cyberstorm MK3 card, and it could with a bit of time show clear steps towards trial equipment, port adapters and stack optimizations. In the meantime the hardware itself stands shortly before the serial preparation and is newly improved in certain technical aspects. MorphOS: Possible New Game Project - a Trojan Horse for the Mac?
Genesi came up with an idea of developing a new game. This is considered in a possible cooperation with producer Elie Chouraqui. It might then be possible to use this game as a "Trojan Horse" for the Macintosh version of MorphOS.

"Gladiateur"
If you have been in Paris the last few days you would have probably seen THIS! It is being produced and directed by Elie Chouraqui. His last film of international renown was Harrison's Flowers (2000).
Last night we had dinner with Elie (thanks to some very good friends of ours). We discussed his latest projects, including "Gladiateur", which is based on the Roman slave uprising lead by Spartacus.
When Raquel and I heard the story line we started to think we might had found our Morph-Apple "Trojan Horse" game.
We told Elie about MorphOS and the Pegasos, contrasting MorphOS and Genesi with Windows and Microsoft...could the Pegasos be the computer gladiator of the 21st Century?! Could the Pegasos inspire another Revolution?! We said OK, let's figure out whether or not we can do it...
Release date: 1 October 2004
MorphOS/Pegasos and Morph-Apple releases
We will invest for this Project! Here are some basic ideas:
1. Themes: Freedom, personal empowerment, responsibility, leadership, teamwork, good vs. evil, changing the world...
2. When a Gladiator (single player) overcomes the challenges of the arena (the CD itself), they qualify to step into the online world and join forces with others who have overcome the arena to fight on for the Revolution (online via the rebellion portal).
Online players hold roles and work together to overcome specific task oriented challenges. Imagine this... You play the CD or through the settings assume an old score...you connect. Online you meet those that are there... you "chat" and plan to overcome the various tasks and requirements.
For example:
Task: Mount Vesuvius
Requirements: Ten Gladiators
Objective: Overcome a Roman Centuria (100 men lead by a Centurion)
The team has to cooperate to be successful and have a strategy for success. Think of Knights and Merchants...
The game and story scale from there. The historical setting is accurate. The greatest success occurs when the most online players cooperate. Game sequences can be re-lived to analyze and improve group game performance. The game takes a quality of its own based on the teamwork and unique skills and resources of the players...

Kickflash OS4: Final product specifications
Due to the high demand, Kickflash OS4, which has been announced on June 2nd, has been revised. The base version now has 1MB of flash memory, and can be expanded to 1GB on an expansion port. Transfer rates can be compared to normal hard drives, but the common access times of mechanical mass-storage media practically don't exist on flash memory: On random access, so-called solid-state memory is about tenthousand times faster than common hard drives.
Kickflash OS4 is a Zorro-card that's compatible with all Zorro-2 and Zorro-3 systems. The new base price for the board is 34,90 EUR. Prices for expansions are not yet available. (ps)

I made two different mixes of "Under The Bard's Tree", probably only one
of them will be used on the CD album, "Return to Witchwood". I haven't
fully decided which one. So I've made a kind of "voting" thing on my
Message Board where I'd like
you to come in and "vote" for the version of the song that you like best.
I'm not saying I will definitely choose the most voted for version, but
that may at least sway my decision.

Linux-compatible 64Bit-operating system K42 from IBM for PPC
K42 is a operating-system research project (available under LGPL) focused
in large part on scalability in the implementation of core OS services.
We will give a brief overview of the project, discuss some of the recent
performance results running 64-bit PPC Linux binaries and discuss the
major ways that our implementation of Linux services depart from the norm
(hopefully making sure to bring up all the truly offensive and contentious
ways).
K42 employs building-block technology to allow applications to customize
and thus optimize the OS services they require. This is particularly
important for applications, such as databases and web servers, where
given the ability to control physical resources, they can improve
performance. K42 is portable; it currently runs on PowerPC systems
(both native and using SimOS). K42's design allows implementors on a
particular architecture to choose what objects of the system should be
customized for that architecture, and as a result allows the implementors
to exploit any architecture specific features to improve performance.

Presentation of 'Foto-Foto' at the Amiga Party in Maarssen
The programmers of Attention Software will present for the first time their new game 'Foto-Foto' at the Amiga party 2003, which takes place on 28 June in the Dutch Maarssen.
'Foto-Foto' is a game, in which from two nearly identical fig. five
differences must be found. The game runs locally, the photos however
will be downloaded from a website, on which also the highscores are stored.
'Foto-Foto' is developed for Amiga OS and MorphOS.

'OS4.0 on Tour': Thanks to AC Augsburg
We hereby want to express our thanks to the Amiga Club Augsburg and its many
helpers for the warm welcome in Augsburg on the occasion of the 'OS4.0 on Tour'
event. Everything was prepared excellently and with much idealism (e.g. the
Amiga museum) and also carried out with great commitment. It is good to see and
to know that there are still many friends of the computer legend 'Amiga' and many
users waiting for OS4.0 to hit the market to be used on an AmigaOne or a
Cyberstorm/Blizzard PPC board.

Big update of Dia-CD (slideshow on VideoCD)
This time is the update of Dia-CD very substantial, it contains the following innovations:
- Title generator for still videos and slideshow.
- Smooth fade in and out of the sound in the still video or the slideshow;
therefore no sudden sound disruptions anymore. But you now need the Sox version sox-12.17.4.lha.
- Title preview (needs a PBM datatype in the system - contained in the archive).
- The collected source images the slideshow is made of are all archived with Lha and written to the
VideoCD image. This way they are preserved. The old function has been removed.
- New format supported. Next to Mpeg1 for the VideoCD creation is now the Internet suitable DIVX4 used.
Installation:
Copy sox, multiview, ppmlabel, ffmpeg 0.4.6, vcdimager, dttoppm, mogrify and lha into the c: directory. Unpack PBMdt44.lha and copy the files to the according directories. Install Tritonrexx, tritonlibrary and Rexxtricks.
Hint:
Many switches, listers and sliders are comprehensively explained in the online help. This counts expecially for the new Gui objects of the title generator.
Important!
The titles for the still video or the slideshow are taken from a text file.
You have especially to take care of the text formatting. This is taken over 1:1! This means that a line end or a tabulator are shown in the video the same way they are existing in the text file. This way you can easily put several lines of text into the video. Furthermore is unfortunately only 7bit ASCII code generated so that no German special characters e.g. ä, ö, ü or ß can be found. The title is inserted only in the first four seconds of a slideshow, even if this is running unlimited. This can be worked around as it is e.g. allowed to use as many Mpeg1 files for VideoCDs as VCD track source as you want.
Title generator:
This one comes with unusual many settings possibilities: font size, font colour, title rotation and title position. If you should be more ambitious you should better use Monument Designer.
Remark:
The script is now absolutly stable. Should something crash it's usually dttoppm or ffmpeg. These I have to a great extent under control so that normally nothing should happen. The only important thing is to use a separate temp directory for each slideshow as otherwise ffmpeg will without a doubt get problems and crash. Besides that you should use no more than 10 source images with each slideshow as otherwise dttoppm renders problems. If you want to put these on VideoCD this limit doesn't matter as you can create as many tracks as you want.

Elbox: eFlash Memory for Amiga
Elbox Computer, the leading manufacturer of hardware for Amiga
computers, is proud to announce two new products:
- eFlash 4000 Zorro III card
- eFlash 1200 PCMCIA card
eFlash 4000 is an autobooting Zorro III card with 1MB (one Megabyte)
of FlashROM memory with extremely fast 32-bit long words access.
The on-board FlashROM allows storage of programs, which are run at
the computer's boot-up process. This allows initialisation of PCI
cards installed in Mediator-equipped A3000 and A4000 computers before
the AmigaOS system starts. As a result, computer may be booted from
mass storage devices connected through various PCI controllers e.g.
Spider or Spider II USB 2.0 cards. The users of the new Amiga
operating system--AmigaOS4.x--will have an additional benefit:
the eFlash 4000 card will give them a possibility of definite
shortening of the system's start time by executing the AmigaOS code
from the FlashROM memory.
FlashROM memory installed in eFlash 4000 cards allows 100,000
erase/programming cycles as a minimum. The card is provided with
hardware protection against unwanted or accidental reprogramming
and with a hardware switch for selecting start of an alternative
batch of programs stored in the eFlash 4000 memory.

Tomorrow: 'OS4.0 on Tour' in Augsburg
The 'OS4.0 on Tour' will be take place on Saturday 14th June 2003 from 10.00am to
8.00pm in Augsburg in the club rooms of Amiga Club Augsburg.
The newest pre-version will be presented by Jürgen Schober, Point-Design, Austria.
Some developers of Hyperion will be present such as Steffen Häuser, Hans-Jörg Frieden
and Thomas Frieden. The members of the Amiga Club Augsburg and KDH Datentechnik will
demonstrate some AmigaOne with Debian Linux. Michael Böhmer from E3B
will demonstrate the newest member of the USB-family, the USB-controller Algor.
Jens Schönfeld from individual Computers
will demonstrate the new C-One and will also
give advice you to all of his products.
AmigaOne boards and equipment as well as several 'OS4.0 On Tour' merchandise products

Multimedia-Authoring-System: Hollywood 1.5 released
The long awaited, major update 1.5 for Hollywood was released today.
Because of the great new features and the long development time, there
is an update fee of $22 USD (only for users, who bought Hollywood before
April 1st 2003). Hollywood 1.5 is available in an AmigaOS 68k version as
well as in a native MorphOS PowerPC version. Many new features have
been added to Hollywood 1.5, here are some of the most important:
- Support for multiple graphics layers
- Full control of layer position, size, transparency and light setting
- 68k version can also create MorphOS executables now and vice versa
- Over 50 new impressing transition effects (totalling in over 100 now!)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 12
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 12 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) Bodie: Considering that OS4 has yet to be released, have sales of the AmigaOne thus far largely fallen in line with expectations?
Fleecy: Since an AmigaOne is a combination of the certified Eyetech hardware solution and AmigaOS4, it is hard to make any comments about the sales of the hardware alone. People want to buy an AmigaOne so that they can experience the latest version of their favourite operating system running on new and powerful hardware. Eyetech has sold quite a few units of the hardware but as we have not yet completed the full product and pre launch promotion has only just started, with the AmigaOS4 on Tour events, we don't really have any sales expectations for this stage. From our standpoint, this final stage is all about raising the levels of excitement and exposure, building towards the launch stage.
2) Pods: Have you considered Envoy over SMB for network support? What were the pros and cons? What other tools have you considered.
Fleecy: SMB is technically quite a let-down in terms of robustness, reliability, performance and general architecture. But it's the only game in town when you want to do printer and file sharing across a heterogeneous network (that is, while it works; printer sharing is at best a black art of sorts). If you don't mind that it can take anything between 5 minutes and three days for changes in the network topology propagate through the SMB server/client chain, that it occasionally refuses to work without any apparent reason and that the Amiga SMB support is nowhere near as polished as it ought to be. Envoy is the best integrated peer to peer file, printer and resource sharing system for the Amiga. However, it is being owned by a third party and would need further polishing to integrate it into the operating system (the user interface needs a brush-up). The downside to Envoy is that it's Amiga-only.
3) alx: Is there any more news on the BlizzardPPC version of OS4?
Fleecy: Our partner, Hyperion Entertainment has asked for feedback numbers in order to judge the demand for a BlizzardPPC version. The issue is that we have to move the the platform forwards and so we do not want people to think that a BlizzardPPC is a viable long term solution for the AmigaOS platform. In the short term we will support the CSPPC (even though its hardware implementation leaves a lot to be desired) and most likely the BlizzardPPC (even though it is a few orders of magnitude harder to support than the CSPPC) but this will only be in order to allow owners of these products to test out the new OS and see where we are going with it.
In addition, performance on these accelerator driven products will be a far cry for what can be experienced on the new Amiga certified hardware.
4) MetalJoe: What are the requirements/costs for Amiga certification of hardware i.e. to run AmigaOS 4 on a new PowerPC motherboard developed by a start-up?
Fleecy: The requirements are simple. Provide a piece of hardware on which AmigaOS4 can potentially run, arrange for it to run on the hardware so that it can pass our certification test suite and convince us that there is a viable commercial market for AmigaOS4 on that piece of hardware. We have been approached in the past by people requesting this information but they have only been interested in small numbers of boards, which makes no commercial sense (unless those third parties want to pay huge premiums per individual board).
5) ssolie: There are some rather vocal members of the Amiga online community who do not trust anything you say and consider you to be a liar. How do you feel about this kind of public criticism and how it may reflect on Amiga Inc. as a whole?
Fleecy: I have four kids, one of whom will be a proper teenager soon so I am used to being detested, insulted and called a liar by those with their own agendas, those who lack all the facts and those who just enjoy the pseudo celebrity status that goes with making lots of noise.
Public criticism comes with the role of having a public presence. Commercial activity is for adults and in the adult world, things don't always go according to plan, nor in the way that you want or even expect. We have had a very rough last three years and I certainly wouldn't say that we haven't made any mistakes. What is important is that we have held firm, worked with our partners and have kept going. AmigaOnes are now shipping, the AmigaOS4.0 is getting closer and closer to production release, with the AmigaOS4 on Tour programme now under way. That is the only way you can answer criticism, by delivering.
6) DaveP: I have been reading a lot of speculative and unsubstantive articles on Moobunny and ANN about the precense of the Articia S bug - or rather the one that the April 1 chip tried to fix. People posting checksums as evidence that it is the Articia S at fault. Can you give us a definitive, in depth explanation as of the situation right now with A1, Articia S and the relevance of these articles if any?
Fleecy: We have spent a lot of time looking at these claims, along with Eyetech, Hyperion, Mai and now Via as well. We have no evidence of the Articia S being responsible for any of the issues claimed. There are well known and documented issues with the Southbridge chip and where it has been used in other systems, those integrators have addressed those using hardware and/or software solutions. Indeed some of the reported issues seem to be because of incomplete implementations or failure to understand the capabilities of the hardware within the specific operating systems on which the problems have been reported.
The 200 MB chunk IDE DMA capability is well known and has not yet been addressed within the Linux PPC driver.
For AmigaOS, which is of course our chief concern, this is not a problem at all. When looking for a future hardware model, we were concerned about the coarse granularity of the PCI model and in particular the way a single process could take control of the bus. For a platform such as the Amiga, which prides itself on total system responsiveness, this is unacceptable and we had intended to implement these services in a chunk based solution anyway, in preparation for the consideration of other packet based bus architectures that would allow us to deliver our quality based solution for the future.
7) GregS: I had read that OS4 will have filesystem room for User and Group IDs, besides the filename is there another space that could be used for a Universal Unique File ID?
Fleecy: The user and group IDs have been in there for quite a while (1992?), it's just that besides Envoy hardly any software package would use them. As for universal unique file identifiers, there isn't an API to create or manage these with, and file system implementations, such as FFS, may not even have room for these in the first place. The 32 bit 'key' numbers associated with each directory entry are a poor substitute.
8) donV: Do you know of any plans for adding complete Java J2SE support for AmigaOS? What about complete Java J2ME support for AmigaDE?
Fleecy: Once the AmigaDE is added to the AmigaOS then J2ME functionality will be available. Further Java capabilities are on our 'to do' list but this is a large list and a lot of those items are likely to take precedence over Java.
9) defrisselle: Since you are located in the UK, will you be organizing a stop on the OS4 tour or have to talked to UK resellers/retailers about setting up a stop on the tour?
Fleecy: The 'AmigaOS4 on Tour' programme is not an Amiga Inc event, although it has our support. It has been organised by Jurgen Schober of Point Design and other dealers as a taster and promotional event for those dealers, using a demonstration of the new AmigaOS4.0 as a draw. Jurgen is the point man for this and will be driving to each dealership each weekend to demonstrate AmigaOS4.0 on a set of machines. I don't believe he was contacted by a UK dealer.
My time is taken up with finalising the pre launch, launch and post launch global marketing campaign for AmigaOS4.0.
10) ikir: OS4 contributions drawer will it contain an office suite (like Star Office, Open Office...)?
Fleecy: The AmigaOS4.0 contributions drawer is for third parties, both commercial and free/shareware who want to distribute versions of their applications to AmigaOS4.0 purchasers. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this can contact me directly. I am not aware of an currently being developed office suite existing for the Amiga, even in a 68K version so I don't believe there will be one.

New Midi-Sequencer "Horny" by Inutilis Software
Horny will be a Midi Sequencer in the style of "Logic" or
"Cubase", whose simple and uncomplicated operation is the center of
attention. Differently than its models Horny is to remain however a

Almanac III" has managed the jump to version 5.2, the freeware, strong chess simulation AmiChess has been raised to version 2.0.

AmigAIM 0.9445 Beta released
Yesterday the new version 0.9445 of the Instant Messenger "AmigAIM" has been released by developer Richard H. Poser II. The update contains fixes of some shortcomings in the link handler routines which led to problems when the link wasn't initiated with the usual "http://". Therefore the HTML parser was improved. Official screenshots of AmigaOS 4 published
The online magazine AmigaWorld has published four official new screenshots of
the future AmigaOS 4.0 which show the standard Intuition look of Workbench and
at the same time GUI and MUI preferences, a Workbench magnifying glass, the Web
browser IBrowse and the launch bar used. Also interesting is the effective font
anti aliasing, e.g. the smoothing of the fonts on the user interface.

disassembler.library for bootblock lab and memory monitor. This
library always opens mmu.library too which seems to be annoying
for some users. Idea by Mikolaj Calusinski, thanks.
- Fixed problem with OxyPatcher: It modified code inside VirusZ and
thus caused alerts by its self-test. Thanks to DMX for the report.
- Did some compatibility fixes for Pegasos systems. VirusZ will work
perfectly with a faked ROM now. Thanks again to Harry Sintonen for the
report and for beta-testing.
- Fixed severe bug in the filecheck: hardlinks haven't been handled
correctly and may have lead to crashes. Now any hardlinks will be
fully tested (respectively the files/dirs they point at). Due to
the inconsistent implementation of hardlinks to the filesystem,
there nevertheless may appear some side-effects when you chose to
delete/disinfect such files. Hardlinks then might be replaced by
invalidated copies of the files they originally pointed at. This
method at least avoids any virus execution and is the best I can
offer. Thanks to Mikolaj Calusinski for the initial bug report,
for beta-testing and further suggestions on this topic.

GNU/Linux, will be taking place until tomorrow in Vienna. The Debian project will be there with a booth that is loooked after by Gerfried Fuchs. He is additionally organizing a key signing party and will give a talk about the first steps with Debian after the installation. Amiga Arena: HD full version of Fatal Heritage
With the permisson by EGO Software makes the Amiga Arena in cooperation with Bernd Gmeineder from AMI Sector One and Bert Jahn from WHDLoad the release of the full version of "Fatal Heritage" available.
"Fatal Heritage" is a German "Point and Click" adventure, developed in 1990
by EGO Software.
Thanks to the original disk images by EGO Software and Bernd Gmeineder could with the help of Bert Jahn for the first time a HD version been created.

Development of AmiATLAS being continued
The development of AmiATLAS will be continued despite the bad market situation announced the main developers
Gerd Frank and Manfred Rohde in a circular letter.
Just in time for the holidays season will a new top up-to-date version of the Germany map "germany_special" be released, as always with an updated motorway net and of course among other things with some places and some more things. Would it be a PC route planner it'd very probably contain the year 2004 in the title!
Besides that there's a new version of the Scandinavia map in the first bigger planning stage that shall contain Danmark, Sweden, Norway and new Finland, too!
Further enhancements of these and all the other maps will follow respectively are already being worked on.
As the website itself also needs a redesign this is being worked on, too, especially concerning the description of all existing updates. The new site is supposed to go online in the next two to three weeks with new URL. A special announcement will follow.
Not unmentioned should be the (unfortunately very complex) switch of the compiler to the GCC C compiler for PPC for AmiATLAS and the adaption mainly to AmigaOS4 (among other things ReAction) as well as to MorphOS later on.
At last we have to point out that because of new technical problems the updates can't be sent automatically and a new registration is needed, too. Please send a short email with full mail address as well as the serial number and optionally the buying date and the retailer's name to AmiATLAS@gmx.net, and as soon as they are available the wanted archives will be sent.

ImageConvert 2.1 with ImageMagick support
Martin Steigerwald has released the version 2.1 of ImageConvert that comes with support for ImageMagick.
The GPL'd script converts graphics into a chosen resolution and colour depth and is compatible with ArtEffect 2-4, PPaint 6.4-7.x, Photogenics 2 and ImageMagick 5.5.5. Due to the program control via the Command Line Interface is the script best suited for the use with Directory Opus Magellan or a similar file manager.
