MPEG: SMPEG V0.4.4 - MPEG-1 player library for SDL
An Amiga version of the MPEG-1 player library 'SMPEG' with sound support has
been released, including a simple player program.
Video playback is based on the Berkeley MPEG player 'mpeg_play v2.2'. Sound
output is by way of a slightly modified version of the 'mpegsound-Library' of
Splay V0.8.2.
SMPEG thus supports MPEG audio (MP3), MPEG-1 video and MPEG system streams.
The library is subject to the GNU Library Public License (LGPL) Version 2 and
has been compiled with -m68020-60.
With 'plaympeg', a simple video player for testing the library is included (also required is the SDL library: CGX, AHI, etc.).
The C library interfaces are 'documented' in the file 'smpeg.h' and the MPEG*.h
files.

Amiga Flame: 6th anniversary, Go For Goal, Space-Flight simulation
The Amiga online games magazine 'Amiga Flame' celebrates its 6th anniversary,
reports about an ice hockey game for AmigaDE with 'Go For Goal', and about a
Spaceflight simulation which is in the first development stage.
On 12th October 1996, Philip Cosby went online with Amiga Flame,
so the online magazine is celebrating its 6th anniversary. Philip Cosby is
glancing back to this origin in an article,
describes the current situation and the reason why he started Amiga Flame: "It
was as though Amiga users were in a dark room and could see no future, only
darkness. I had to light up that room and show them that there are many amazing
and exciting games in development."
With Go For Goal,
an ice hockey game for AmigaDE is in development. It is inspired by the C-64
game 'Hattrick'. In 'Go For Goal' you control one field player and the goal
keeper - the computer acts as opponent.
This game is being developed a.o. by Gabriel Hauber,
who is also involved in the Java AmigaDE classes 'Jami'.
The target platform is currently PDAs with a resolution of 240x320 pixels. At a
later stage, this will be customizable, so screen sizes from mobile phones up
to desktop computers will be supported.
For more information about the game you can mail Gabriel Hauber
(gabrielh@gabrielhauber.com).
Amiga Flame has found out,
that a new developer team is planning to develop a spaceflight simulation.
According to team member Johan Dams, the game will be along the lines of
Elite/Frontier. One of the ideas is that the game should be playable over the
Internet.
The developers are aware of this project's scope and are looking for talented
gfx artists and programmers to push the project forward. Interested
people should mail Johan Dams (amiga@sin.khk.be).

Chess: AmiChess and Crafty
Achim Stegemann writes:
"Although having been announced as soon as the beginning of October, the two
new chess programs AmiChess and Crafty have finally found their way into the
Aminet.
AmiChess is a GNUChess 5.0.4 based program with a GUI making use of MUI.
Alas, some users have already told me that AmiChess doesn't run on their Amiga.
I don't know the reason for this, as it works without problems on my computers
(Amiga, Amithlon and UAE). In this case I am asking all users with this problem
to mail me their Amiga configuration and a SnoopDOS log file.
The second program, Crafty, is an Amiga port of the very strong program by Bob
Hyatt. The most current version 18.15 has been ported. Crafty can only be
played under ixemul in pure text mode in a shell. In return it has proven
itself to be a very strong opponent!
The binaries of both programs have been compiled towards a 68020/68881
combination and thus should run on this or better CPU configurations. Due to
the source code's particularities, a PPC port is currently impossible. However,
fast x86 emulators like UAE, AmigaXL or Amithlon are an adequate substitute.
Further information can be found on my home page."
AmiChess runs from AmigaOS 3.5/3.9, MUI 3.8 and CPU 68020 with FPU 68881.
Crafty requires the ixemul.library V48+ and runs from CPU 68020 with FPU 68881.

individual Computers: Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper and PCI POST code display
Two new products are listed on individual Computers' Web site. These are
'Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper' and 'PCI POST code display' respectively. There are
exact delivery dates for both products. More information can be found under the
title link.
Catweasel MK3 PCI/Flipper is on one side a PCI board for PCs, Macs,
AmigaOne and Pegasos, and the other side (thus 'Flipper') can be stuck into the
Zorro Bus of a classical Amiga.
In addition, this board contains a connector for the A1200's clock port.
Beside the traditional Catweasel functions, support for diverse floppy disk
formats (C64 floppy, Amiga etc.), three new functions have been added:
- Support for digital Joysticks (VIC 20, C-64, Amiga)
- Mini-DIN connector for an Amiga 4000 keyboard. Whoever wants to use an
A2000 or A3000 keyboard can do so using a PS/2 adaptor which can be
bought in well-stocked PC shops.
- Additionally the board offers the possibility of inserting the C-64's
original Soundchip (SID). According to the manufacturer, greatest care
was taken to make sure that the chip really sounds exactly like in the
original computer.
PCI POST-Code display (Port 80 Display) is a diagnostics board for all
computers with PCI slots.
The PC BIOS has a built-in diagnostics help, which writes each step of the
self diagnosis, the so-called Power-On Selftest (short: POST), to the PCI bus.
On a two-digit display, the POST-Code Display shows the Hex code, which then
can be translated into plain language with the help of a table from the BIOS'
manufacturer.
As many errors are caused by the power supply, five LEDs additionally show the
state of all voltages on the PCI bus.
Further information about the products can be obtained through the title link.

Event: Amiga + Retro Computing 2002 - Website now also in English
All parts of the page are now available in English as well. Small changes
have been done to the website design, and a free hotel booking service
has been added.
AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002 takes place on December 7th and 8th, 2002
at the Eurogress Aachen, Germany.
The main focus of the show will be on Amiga-related products. The biggest highlights will surely be the new mainboards "Amiga One" and "Pegasos". The title "Retro Computing" does not mean that this is a nostalgia meeting or even a fleamarket for old computers. Just the opposite. The exhibitors will show that the technologies of the home computers of the 80s are still improved today, and that they're still available as new products in the 21st century.
With AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4 on the one side, and Pegasos with MorphOS on the other side, the Amiga - multimedia wonderbox of the late 80s - is ready for a comeback with high-performance PowerPC processors. The "Digital Enviroment" of Amiga Inc. (USA) allows using adapted software on multiple mobile and home-based devices like desktop computers, mobile phones or personal digital assistants (so-called palmtops). This makes Amiga-technology perfectly suited for the future.
Probably the most interesting product from the Retro Computing area is the Commodore One (Codename: C-One). Developer Jeri Ellsworth is working on the ATX-sized motherboard for nearly two years now. As the name already suggests, it's the inofficial successor of the legendary C-64 by Commodore. Exchangable CPU modules can turn this board into nearly any computer of the 80s, among them is also the well-known Atari 2600 console that became famous in Germany with the game Pac-Man.
After big German magazines like Focus and Computerbild Spiele wrote about the project, it's first presented and sold in Europe at AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002.
We're especially happy that Jeri Ellsworth is making the long trip from USA to Germany to present the board in person.
The name Atari is closely tied to the computers of the 80s. Developers are still active today; The magazine ST-Computer and developers of the prestige products Calamus, Papyrus or Eclipse will surely be in Aachen, where visitors can also gather information about the exciting Coldfire project that wants to accelerate old Atari ST computers with a powerful processor.

SUBWAY production started
Michael Böhmer of E3B writes:
Not ignoring the difficulties within the Amiga market we at E3B decided
at least to start a small production run of the SUBWAY USB card also.
The open positive feedback by many Amiga users was not a small subject
to make this decision. Therfore we see the introduction of the SUBWAY
as a small gift to the users.
We hope to give a positive sign for the classic market and hop to fulfill all expectations of quality and innovation.
The smallness of this production run will cause some delays. The availability of this card will, as usually practised by E3B, be announced by the known dealers when the shipping really starts. Stay tuned.

Encryption software: PGP Version 2.6.3in
Under the title link you find a small download side by Andreas Schwarz. Among other things you find the current version (20010323) of the encryption software 'PGP 2.6.ín' there. However contrary to the Aminet version one needs the ixemul 48 library. Nevertheless the speed corresponds at least to that of the age-old asm version of the Aminet. The list of fixed bugs is rather long. It was compiled using the GCC 2.95.1.
The archives are also very well arranged. They contain nearly the complete English docs + en/es/fr/de language files. The execs are for 020+ and 060. Praise to the author.

Event: Report from the Pegasos/MorphOS demonstration at the "BeGeistert"
To give you a first overview about who I met in Düsseldorf at the
BeGeistert, let's start with
Nicholas Blachford, known
through his audio software Aural-Illusion
and Aural Synthetica.
He did a detailed interview
in February 2002 for Amiga Arena. He is working as a software engineer for
Thendic France for about a month now.
Furthermore Bertrand Presles and Sébastien Lokhamkhouak were on board as well.
Bertrand is president of the ASUM
(Association of Sympathiques Utilisateurs de MorphOS), a union of MorphOS-fans,
which originated from the AFUA group (Association Française des Utilisateurs d'Amiga),
a union of Amiga-fans. Sébastien is currently founding a new French MorphOS print
magazine called 'Fly High'.
The Pegasos
"Betatester 1" computer system was being demonstrated with the
MorphOS operating system.
What hides behind the "Pegasos" and "MorphOS"? The Pegasos is a new PPC computer system,
or better said new hardware, which bases on an ATX motherboard offering dual G3/G4
processor support. This computer was developed by
bplan GmbH, Frankfurt, and is manufactured
by DCE, Oberhausen, and
Thendic France is the worldwide
distributor.
MorphOS is an excellent fit for this new computer.
Below we take a look at a part of an
interview done by amiga-topcool
with Ralph Schmidt (one of the MorphOS authors) to better understand why this
OS was developed:
amiga-topcool: Ralph, when did the idea for MorphOS strike you, and what
caused you to begin?
Ralph Schmidt: Let me go back a bit before that, because MorphOS is a stage
in a longer sequence of events. In September 1995 we (the former Phase 5)
decided to introduce the PowerPC as the new CPU in the Amiga market, because
there was no visible future for the old 68K series of processors. To that
end we worked not quite a year on emulations and plans for how the OS could
be ported.
All of that went out the window as we opted instead for the ppc.library
approach, for reasons of time and market conditions. Then in 1998 there was
again a bit of energy to the original approach after the Flash, ppc.library
and SCSI developments were winding down. We saw absolutely no sense in a
simple AmigaOS port or a 68K Workbench extension ala OS 3.5, so our goal was
the foundation of a new OS, an OS that would contain an "A-Box" for old
Amiga API programs. In March 1999 the microkernel for this new OS was
functional, in that such an AmigaOS box could be integrated and this would
then serve as the OS foundation.
So the operating system MorphOS (boots in 2.5 seconds) is a microkernel based OS,
upon which sits an A/box, which would then allow the execution of Amiga programs
(which don't access hardware), but faster as compared to Amiga hardware.
The operating system MorphOS has today matured to a good operational status,
Ambient (the Workbench clone) is based on MUI and can be adapted to individual
design wishes.
During the performance I have asked whether it is possible to use
hard disks from the Amiga to be used without problems. Bertrand attached his
Amiga hard disk as slave and booted his computer, after this we could
use all the programs stored on his Amiga hard disk.
However, if I say that the OS has arrived at a good operational point, I mean
that it currently runs faultlessly in the main areas, but there also are somethings
left to do. Herefor I would like you to remember that the individual stages of development of
our AmigaOS. AmigaOS wasn´t perfect at the beginning, and it isn't today. MorphOS is
nevertheless promising because there are already
many programs, that are converted natively to MorphOS, further software will follow,
just think about those many programs which are in work by
Titan-Computer and
e.p.i.c. interactive.
Around 15 programmers are intensively engaged in making MorphOS
a better solution in the meantime.
Users who think themselves to be capable of coping with a system which still
raises smaller problems, can purchase this Pegasos/MorphOS computer as a
so-called "Betatester1" (with NDA). Later, users of the Betatester1
still have the possibility to test additional hardware, such as a smart card readers.
The "Betatester2" will be sold at the beginning of the coming week, no NDA (obligation
to be silent about certain things) needs to be signed anymore. A date for the
official customer release isn't finalized yet. The German Distributor is
Vesalia, and on their website you can find
all the technical details.
Finally, some answers to the questions asked by amiga-news.de readers:
Which DVD- and CD-ROM-drives are utilizable? Are there any limitations?
Yes and no. Most devices run, there will be a detailed list on Thendic France´s website shortly.
When will the support for 512 MB RAM-modules be ready?
These already can be used, when it's registered RAM. There will also be a list
of all useable RAM-modules.
Will there also be support for Firewire and SCSI-adaptors?
SCSI now, Firewire later, there will be a commercial solution for this
interface not after the release of the video editing software
'Motionstudio' from Titan-Computer.
Is there planned TV out and dual monitoring support?
This does not run yet, but will be implemented. When isn't clear at this
point. It has definately no high priority.
What is the current state of Eclipsis and the JAVA-VM?
In development and there are first prototypes.
My personal impression after this demonstration: Not yet finished, but very very promising!

T.o.T.: New LARP-Videos and Aminet-Demo
From the Tales of Tamar Newspage:
"Dear customers and testers,
it is our pleasure to provide your with two news items
today.
First of all, we finally got the video for the second LARP
based on Tales of Tamar. This con was again organized by
the proven team around Daniel Stein and everybody had a lot of
fun.
Our thanks go to the great people at Virtual Dimension,
who professionally cut and produced the video. You can find it
under Downloads.
If all goes well, we will have an ambiente con in winter 2002/03
on a castle. It will also be the release party for the Tales of Tamar
base set. Every player is cordially invited. You will soon find
detailled information in the LARP section of our homepage.
Last but not least, today we have prepared a tech demo for Tales of Tamar
to be released on Aminet. This demo will help you find out if Tales
of Tamar works properly on your system and also gives you some
background information. It is the same demo as two years ago, but
based on new routines and now also works on Amithlon. Unfortuneately,
we're not able to test it on MorphOS yet, but if some MorphOS
betatesters download this demo, we would like to hear about possible
problems.

Amiga Society: Little Book of Amiga Software expanded (Might and Magic III ...)
From the Amiga Society Web site:
"The Little Book of Amiga Software is slowly growing - page by page and chapter
by chapter. This weekend about ten new entries will be added, and quite a number
will be extended.
Joining in are among others Might and Magic III and Oh no! More Lemmings.
The weekend will also bring extensions for Schlachtfeld.
Here, the team page (among others) will be expanded, but there'll also be the odd
information elsewhere.
Also, the translations of the various areas into German or English respectively should make some progress - o dear, and this with my rusted English. I'm already glad if my German babble is understood. Till then....
Yours, Horst"

You can do it by viting this page.
However, remember that the AROS team doesn't officially support these

Event: Pictures of visit to "BeGeistert" in Düsseldorf
Here is a selection of the pictures that have been taken today by Petra Struck on the BeOS event BeGeistert. Mainly, of course, pictures of the Pegasos/MorphOS and Walker presentations, which btw may be repeated on Sunday morning if required. An extensive report will follow.
 Ulrich 'Scholly' Scholz (left) "guards" the entrance ... |
 ... and collects the entrance fee of 10 Euro per visitor. |
 Most people are currently attending a BeOS demonstration ... |
 ... thus the room looks nearly deserted. |
 While waiting for Nicholas, I have already shot a picture of the MorphOS surface. The windows' design is variable and, thanks to MUI, customisable. |
 Gert is having BeOS explained to him at length :-) |
 T-Shirts of all sizes and all BeGeistert event vintages are waiting for buyers, three of the old vintages can be bought for 25 Euro, the current "BeGeistert 2002" is 13 Euro. |
 Bertrand Presles and Sébastien Lokhamkhouak of Thendic France |
 Here a glimpse of the Pegasos' inside |
 The complete system |
 Nicholas Blachford of Thendic France |
 (This picture in 1280 x 960) A further look at the Pegasos' inside |
 The Walker! Nicholas has given it a try, and partly even managed to make it work! |
 The Walker's backside really strongly resembles a vacuum cleaner, the connectors however reveal that there is a complete computer with all the bits and pieces hiding inside. |
 Here two - to my knowledge never before published - drawings ... |
 ... of Walker prototypes in a tower (well, rather a giant tower). The original pictures will be submitted to us later. |
 I have seldomly visited events where the empty pizza boxes were so neatly stacked for disposal! |
 Here now a couple of pictures from the BeOSers' room ... |
 Discussions here, object lesson there ... |
 ... naturally, the pizza order is also important! |
 Gert is looking forward to dinner at a Chinese restaurant ... |
 ... and I, too, am in the best of moods, for I have seen much and, obviously, I am totally delighted. Till next time with "Petra on Tour" ;-) |

Event: status report from the Amiga Meeting Nord
Slowly it's getting full ;-). We have really reached the limit of our capacity. Right now there are 30 computers installed. Our network is still running flawlessly. Hopefully there won't be any problems with the electricity ;-).
Around 17 o'clock will the premiere of the film "Dünn2" take place. After this will
Andre begin with the demo presentations. The organizers are really excited about the event being so popular. The first sales via our stock market have already been done. People are busy in handicraft work and especially in helping each other with the soldering-iron or just with good advice. Here still lives the Amiga feeling!
Under http://www.amigameeting.de/Webcam/Cam.jpg
is the web cam still running delivering a new picture every 25 seconds.

AmigaTalk V2.1 uploaded to Aminet
Version 2.1 of AmigaTalk today was uploaded to Aminet. A look at the .readme file
will show some significant additions since V2.0.
AmigaTalk V2.1 is a version of 'Little Smalltalk' (V1.0 by Tim Budd) that
has been re-written & enhanced for the Amiga line of computers.
James T. Steichen, Copyright (c) 1998-2002.
Be sure to have the sound turned on when you start the program!
(It's called AmigaTalk for a reason!)
WARNING:
~~~~~~~
There are some things that I can no longer test due to the fact
that my system has a CyberVision 64/3D graphics card & is using
the cybergraphics.library (et al). I would appreciate some
feedback about problems that you might find, since I will not
always be able to find them.
The system is currently NOT fully documented (especially IFF & BOOPSI
Classes), so expect to see some holes in the documentation.
I did NOT go back & verify that all the test files still work as
shown.
REQUIREMENTS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
AmigaTalk uses DeckBrowser which is copyrighted (c) by InovaTronics.
I've included a copy of it with my distribution. It should be placed
in the command path where the Amiga OS can find it (example: 'C:')

20+ Mb of RAM (or you can edit the AmigaTalk:c/InitializeCommands
script & delete the instantiations for Intuition Tags,
DosSystem Tags & DataTypeSystem Tags & drop this
number down to 4 Mb of RAM).

Video converter update 2.2 beta
Carsten Siegner wrote:
Today I have finished a new beta of the program 'Video converter'. This version fixes a problem with Movieshop picture files. Until now ffmepg broke off when it met an unknown Jpg sub format (ffmpeg is very particular about Jpg sub formats). Now I have created a "work arround" by coding a dataype loader plugin for Video converter. This plugin can read all picture formats for which a datatype is installed, convert them to PPM and hand them over as a picture list to Video converter.
All you have to do is choosing a pictures directory in the lister as input, one for the output and then just pressing "convert".
Unfortunately it's only a beta version because it always crashes on my Amiga when using very big pictures lists and I could not fix the error entirely. This beta can be downloaded from my hompage.

BTW main page of Czech Amiga.News finally validates as HTML 4.01 Transitional!
During the transition we have also fixed the

Music/Sound Expert Sought for Crossfire II
Dreamworlds Development is looking urgently for a music/sound expert who can also
add music to animations, in order to prepare Crossfire II. The animations are in MPEG
format or if needed in single pictures on a CD. The result of adding the sound should
therefore be a timed sample in a common format
There is not going to be much monetary reward involved (because of the
overall market situation). The best case scenario would be approximately
100 Euros when the project is published. You can get further details by

Mega-Workshop ProStationAudio
"Audio with the Amiga rocks!" Take a calm walk with us in the world
of a professional Audio-Sequencer, ProStationAudio. Add chimes to
your life!
Thylacine - Tasmanian USB Controller
For many long years it wasn't possible to use a USB gizmo with
your Amiga. Now, within the space of a year come not one but
two new USB cards on the market. After we introduced E3B's
HIGHWAY in the May and July/August 2002 issues, and its little
sister SUBWAY for the clock port of the Amiga 1200 is still
awaited, we're making a little trip to Australia for you. That's
where the Zorro II card Thylacine has been available for a little
while.
Software Tycoon - Learn as the game progresses...
When the digital entertainment industry was still in the
shoes of a little child, the pioneers of game history could
give free rein to their innovative ideas.
After the version for the PC was released about a year ago, the
Amigans and Mac-heads [and MorphOSians -dm] can also dive
into the world of a Software Tycoon and virtually manage the
development of a game.
PC Competitor - Twice-Enjoyed Retro Game Fun
To throw away something valuable, to give something the old heave ho
without a good reason, now that's a pity. So how can the old competitions, zip sticks,
Pythons and Hyperstars be regenerated for employment in Amiga
emulators? The rescue comes from the joystick interface PC
Competitor!
And in addition to all that:
- Workshop PGP, Part 1
- FroggerNG 2 CD Tested

Amiga Society: Website Renovation in Progress
Horst Diebel writes:
»So, the rebuilding of the page is beginning now. Because a few areas of the page
didn't get many visitors, and I unfortunately don't have time to spruce them up,
they will be shut down. This step is overdue, and many people have called for it.
The "Bücher" section will stay in place as the core. "Schlachtfeld" will get its own domain
sooner or later and be distanced from the society. The other headings, whether they are little
matters from Micha or me, will also be closed. Many people thought we should do this and
we announced it long ago.
The only update really is in the Little Book of Amiga Software - a few games will be found
here, which absolutely must be taken up again.»

Soms3D Seeks New Partners
Soms has been on ice for a long time because there was a lot of programming to do. This made us really think about things. We decided
not to make a 2D adventure, but rather a realtime 3D online role playing game.
To do this we already have a 3D programmer and our first internal beta version. The capabilities of Soms3D will be made public at a later
date (assuming our new webpage is online). The adventurers will reach, more or less, a common solution. And naturally all that one may
do online must also be doable in an online game.
To reach our goals we still need a bit of help. We are looking for:
- A musician who can deliver his music in MOD or MIDI form.
- A programmer who knows his way around Online-Programming.
- Because Soms3D is based on PPC it would be better when partners have a PPC, especially when programming.
- Applications or Inquiries go to Sylvio K..

Game 'Armada' released on Aminet
Armada is a round-based game for two to five players. It is a version of a game formerly played with paper and colored pencils. To start off each player places his sea port on the map. As the game progresses players select their ships and attack opposing ships. It depends on the distance and a roll of the dice if the opposing ships are sunk.
Armada-Homepage is here, and here is the Aminet download link: Armada.lha. The author would like to hear some feedback about the game and its homepage.

AMHuhn: Programmers are overwhelmed :-)
Telemar Rosenberger, one of the developers of AMHuhn is totally overwhelmed by the positive response and submitted the following statement for release:
Hello AMIGA and AMHuhn friends,
we would like to thank you very much! We didn'd expected such a huge approval and friendly help.
Since the AMHuhn is at the net the incoming emails don't stop, there are so many mails from all over the world to respond, it's getting hard to do something else, there are positive criticisms, brief notes of thanks, suggestions for optimization or problems. Nothing negative yet :-)
Getting so much approval there is nothing left for us than continueing. I know there are problems with Picasso96 but I have to note that I can try cybergraphics only by myself. There are problems as well if the iff.library and the
picture.library are both not inside libs:.
Regarding the datatypes it is important to have the jpg and anim datatype installed, no matter if these are WOS, PPC or 68k.
With AHI sound the following is important:
At the AHIprefs you should choose 3 to 4 channels for the music unit at the mode. With a 68040 is AHI 4.18 the best, it seems to be the fastest.
Have fun and I hope that most people have no problems with running the Huhn.
With the best regards
Telemar Rosenberger

Game: New AMHuhn executable with screenmode requester
As reported yesterday,
Telemar Rosenberger and Franz 'Cj-Stroker' Schlick have developed a
"Moorhuhn" clone with the name "AMHuhn". From comments there was obvious
that some users still have problems with the game, e. g. those who use P96.
Telemar fastly has put a new executable to the site which offers a screenmode requester at the launch of the game.
To test if problems are solved with this, he asked us to offer this new executable for download. This is not the whole archive but only the main program 'AMHuhn'.

TTEngine 4.3 released
Grzegorz "Krashan" Kraszewski writes:
I have released V4.3 of TTEngine. Main new feature is font scaling and
mirroring. Below you can read full list of changes from previous V4.1:
- I've placed an open counter in the LoadedFont structure. It removes problems with many RastPorts using one font.
- TT_SetAttrs() function may be now called before TT_SetFont() and is able to create RastPort context.
- TT_SetFont() returns now BOOL value instead of VOID, because it can fail in low memory condition.
- New demo program MoreFonts shows using many fonts at once in one window.
- Affine transformation support code added. (Particular examples of affine transformations are: scaling, shearing, rotation).
- Font may now be scaled in both the axes independently with TT_ScaleX and TT_ScaleY tags. Scaling range is from 0.01 to 100 (negative too, results in mirroring of the text).
- TT_TextExtent() returned random values in the TextExtent structure, if no font has been set for the RastPort using TT_SetFont(). Now the structure is zeroed in the case.
- New demo program Scaling shows - as its name says - font scaling.
- TT_OpenFont() performed illegal READ-MODIFY-WRITE operation at address $0000003A, if opening of the font file failed. Fixed.
- Header file "ttengine.h" was modified to comply with AmigaOS headers standard.

thttpd is a very fast and efficient Web server, which reaches distinguished speed values also on a relatively slow 68k-Amiga.

Tool: SRename Version 3.5.0 beta 5
Constantinos Nicolakakis published a new beta version of the tool 'SRename'.
With this tool, which can be used with Amiga OS 3,0+, you can comfortably rename files.
In version 3.5.0 beta 5 the following program sections and bugs were fixed:
- Rewritten many code parts.
- Added "Reuse" capability using parentheses ( ) . This makes it possible for several actions to act on the same unmodified filename.
- Changed the way the "INSERT" action works when appending characters. For appending purposes the user should now use the new "APPEND" secondary argument.
- Improved the way that the number positioning is handled when modifying the basename of a filename sequence.
Bugfixes:
- Fixed bug with not appending characters at the end of a segment using INSERT.
- Fixed "Destination path not found" bug when using ":" in conversion.
- Fixed problem of reading only up to 120 characters of each CLI supplied path/filepattern.
- Fixed one Enforcer hit.

Microcode Solutions: Power Macintosh(tm) Emulation News (Update)
Power Macintosh(tm) Emulation News!
»Microcode Solutions will be releasing an iMac(tm)
based emulation in both hardware (G3, G4, and dual G4 PCI boards) and
software versions in the near future. Stay tuned for details!«
Update 15.10.2002:
Microcode Solutions has received what we believe will be the final hardware revision of the PCI based PowerPC card being manufactured by a well known PowerPC accelerator company.
The current board is a high speed G3 board. Other models are being prototyped right now, and these are G4 and dual processor configurations.
Microcode Solutions has always been the leader in Macintosh emulation technology, developing the first PowerPC emulation for a non-Macintosh platform. We will continue this tradition by releasing the first Power Macintosh emulation for the PC.
Besides having a PCI based hardware solution, Microcode Solutions will also be releasing a completely software based emulation to the public at an amazingly low price (under $50).
We know that people have waited an extremely long time for Microcode Solutions to release a new product, and we appreciate your patience. Just like our successful product "FUSION-PC", we feel we should wait to release the product until it is perfected. We are nearing that stage right now. (ps)

- bugs reported by Vladimir Javorski
- DEBUGSYM option do now enable the DEBUG define
The compiler runs from AmigaOS V3.0, CPU 68ec020, 4MB RAM and 3-4 MB free space
on the hard disk. The compiler itself does not require an FPU. The generated
programs, however, require an FPU if they make use of floats.
The PPC binaries run with the powerpc.library.
Apart from the compiler, 'phxass' and 'phxlnk' are required for creating 68k
code, and 'pasm' and 'vlink' for creating PPC code.
These programs can be found on Frank Wille's
home page.

GUI-Builder: Emperor V4.5 (Reaction)
Matthias Gietelt has released version 4.5 of the GUI builder 'Emperor'.
'Emperor' is not just a GUI builder, but a complete programming interface for
easy creation of programs, which make use of Reaction and GadTools.
Emperor is targeted at all programmers and non-programmers (i.e. at Amiga users
in general).
Version 4.5 features in short:
- Implemented Drag'n'Drop of objects.
- Full StormC V4 support.
- Added category ToolTypes.
- Implemented generation of install scripts.
- Main window displayable in smaller mode.
- Fixed problems with array window.
- All lists keyboard controllable.
- Added extended setup options.
- Message handling as hierarchical list.
- Optional custom screen for Emperor.
- Fixed problems with preview window.
- Optimized project open routines.
- Fixed error in generated source text.
- Reworked progress indicators.
- Optimized some macro functions.
- Optimized generated source text.
- Icons can be created for all files.
- Full AmigaOS3.9 support.
- Extended functions in attribute window.
- Improved programming help.
- New text editor functions.
- New project check routine.
- Improved online help.
- Extended GadgetHelp.
- Optimized initialize functions.
- Fixed smaller bugs.
Description:
'Emperor' is mainly to free the programmer of having to deal with complicated
system structures. I.e.: Programming by simply clicking. Anyone who knows the
Amiga a little is able to create programs with its help. The programming help
offers a choice of macro functions which take over control and handling of
partly rather complex operations. The two functions Get/SetGadgetAttr() should
be especially highlighted. Merely the gadget to be queried has to be specified.
Specifics like window and query property are unnecessary as most of the time
only one particular tag has to be queried (set) (example: FUELGAUGE_Level,
GA_Selected).
The integrated text editor provides the project's 'individualization' - it is
here that the actual personal source text within own or generated functions is
being written.
Message handling describes possible intervention variants into the standardised
program sequence. A function can for example be called on 'Startup' or
'Shutdown'. Or when windows open or gadgets are selected.
Furthermore it is possible to write small tools withing a couple of minutes,
or to create the graphical user interface for complex applications.
A couple of small sample projects are included with the program.
The attribute windows are the most important means when creating own projects.
Each gadget which lies within these attribute windows has a small help which is
displayed in the main window (this applies to all windows in Emperor). It
allows specific parameterisation of the single objects. A little delicacy can
be found on the requesters page. In this attribute window it is possible to
have Emperor specific ReAction based requesters created. For this you switch to
'Reaction' within the attribute window and activate 'ReactionRequest'. Now
there are many settings available to adjust the requesters to your preferred
taste and circumvent the system requesters (as those don't necessarily conform
to the design of contemporary programs, and not everyone uses requester patches
such as ReqAttack).
Another example are the predefined menus, which can added to the project with a
single click. If you use these predefined menu macros, you not only get the
menu itself, but also the complete translations in all 18 supported languages.
Finally I'd like to point out this version's most important feature: Popup
menus, which are based on ReAction based windows can also be created. These
popup menus are objects which ReAction doesn't explicitly support as a rule -
with Emperor these become reality.
Also a great help are the so-called ICMaps which are supported since AmigaOS
3.5: they allow to have gadgets communicate with one another uni- or
bidirectionally (own creation), without having to type a single line of code.
This is especially interesting for gadgets with similar or mutually exclusive
functions.
Another highlight is the definable GadgetHelp output. It allows to select a
gadget as output gadget. The respective GadgetHelp (on the attribute window's
'Misc' page) is transferred into this gadget. Thus it should be a string
gadget.
There is an immediate visualisation for each GUI element, which facilitates a
preview without compiling the project, e.g. for windows, requesters, ASL
requesters, screens, popup menus and menus.

HSMathLibs v44.50 beta 2 and v44.50 beta 8
HSMathLibs v44.50 beta 2 (for MC68881/82) and v44.50 beta 8 (for MC68040/060)
Finally it is done. After a very long period of time there are new
versions of the HSMathLibs. In these versions, that exist also as demo versions, have all known bugs been removed, some smaller optimizations have been done and some new features (e. g.: full support of the programs "BlizKick", "LoadResident" and "LoadModule") have been added.
I regret that there has been so much time since my announcement on July, 6th 2002 to the release of these versions but this wasn't up to me. Already on July, 6th 2002 was the German version of the HSMathLibs finished and I have sent the files to the ATO (Amiga Translators' Organization). But though I had taken a lot of work from the translators it had taken much time. 2 teams of the ATO haven't been able until now to translate the files. This is also the reason why with the new versions only 12 instead of 14 languages are supported.

AmithlonTV looking for programmers!
Programmers wanted!
We need people for AmithlonTV who know how to code, who have knowledge of TV cards (bt8x8, SAT, DVB, ...), who own one and who are willing to write drivers for the single components.
This is how things are right now:
We have a three layers drivers system. On the lowest level there's a text file that follows a library serving as interface to applications. This library calls single sub drivers.
The drivers system behind the library is chip based. Simply spoken there's not a driver for each card but for each chip. The advantage is that the user has just to change a text file and makes an entry there containing the chips that are on his card and his TV card will already work. Missing components are of no importance in most cases. Is there no tuner does this mean that the application doesn't have any, either. So a driver for a particular chip works without any adaptation with different cards.
The library is kept that flexible that it can deal with as many TV cards simultaneously as you like. And as many applications as you like can share one single TV card what is very practically e.g for video recorders, TV and web cam. This way it will be switched between the applications if needed. E. g. a web cam application can interrupt a TV application for doing a snapshot but it cannot do this with the video recorder application.
In contrary to the main library that is already working very well there's much work to be done on the external components. There's no real TV application, yet. There's a small test version showing the possibilities and being used for testing purposes but it doesn't really offer functionality.
It's even worse with the chip drivers. To date there are only the drivers for the Medion TV card (MD 9592) existing. That means that an audio driver, a tuner driver and the bt8x8 are existing. The bt8x8 driver should be capable in creating and displaying an image on all TV cards using a BrookTree chip. Especially the bt8x8 support causes still quite some trouble and I could need specialist knowledge.
This may all now sound very complicated but it isn't as the complex things are all implemented in the tvcard.library with the drivers themselves being very small. The sub library for the tuner is for the time being not even 2 Kb in size!
Urgently needed are:
- Drivers for as many chips as possible.
- A TV application with a nice GUI using Reaction or skins.
- A video recorder application.
Capabilities that you should have:
- C knowledge.
- 68K knowledge are of advantage.
- Library coding (the chip drivers are normal libraries with four functions).
- Knowledge of the single chips are very advisable.
What can't be expected:
AmithlonTV is not commercial and it is not supposed to become in the future. Therefore there'll be no payment. With this call I want to push the development that is going on only slowly until now.
Interested people may contact me!

Frank Wille: vbcc version 0.8 und vlink version 0.8 (Update)
Frank Wille has updated two of his programs. The first is
vbcc version 0.8,
a highly optimized portable ISO C compiler, available in versions for Amiga and MorphOS. The compiler supports ISO C as defined in ISO/IEC 9899:1989 and part of the new standard ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (C99).
Furthermore has Frank Wille released version 0.8 of the linker
vlink.
vlink is a portable linker written in ANSI-C for several object file formats. The source code should compile under AmigaOS as well as under Unix without any problems. For now are supported: AmigaDos,
EHF, ELF32-PowerPC-BigEndian, ELF32-PowerUp, a.out (NetBSD68k, SunOS010, SunOS020, NetBSDi386, PCi386, VOBJ), as well as Motorola S-Record and Raw-Binaries via linker scripts.
Update 14.10.2002:
vbcc was'nt written only by Frank Wille, but also by Volker Barthelmann.

We thank the participating companies Vesalia, bplan and MorphOS who made it possible for us to show the Pegasos. On the one hand we didn't want to put the beta testers at a disadvantage but on the other hand we wanted to show the computer to the publicity and we believe that we succeeded. Because of an article in Bremen's biggest newspaper on Sunday we had 5432 visitors on both days. Via the U.d.N.
came interested users who wanted to see the Pegasos.
The Videobörse in Bremen was the opportunity for such a presentation, for years we participate there in spring and autumn with our computers. After we had dissolved the A.U.C - HB in the end of 2001 as there were less and less Amiga users in Bremen and founded the party U.d.N. in this we got the promise from the organizers of the show to further use our room in the citizens center for free as we are known as magnet for the event.
The two days have confirmed that our chosen way, a calm juxtaposition of different operating systems, is practicable. It doesn't matter whether it is the Amiga, PC, Mac, Palm, Linux or another system.
The Amiga and new hardware for the Amiga have therefor a platform to show themselves to non-Amigans. Our experiences show that many PC users remember their beginners time with the Amiga at such an event. As the PC users saw the tower with the Mediator board and as such with the PCI slots equipped with Voodoo card, TV card, sound card and Ethernet card they almost couldn't believe that it is an Amiga with a PPC card.
USB on the Amiga? Satellite dish and television? Flat screen? Playing videos
and MPEG? What, this all is possible? In the net via PCI-Ethernet?
And then online showing the Amiga-News, our Ralf had no break because of all the explanations about his system and his video equipment. At the end the ATARI users being also at the show explained this upgraded Amiga to their friends and afterwards even the Pegasos. Our special thanks go to "Professor Dellert" (we call him respectfully so) of DCE who had taken care for a BRILLIANTLY modified PPC card.
On Thursday, October 3rd, 2002 had two users of the U.d.N. set of from Bremen and picked up the two Pegasos computers,
so we had had two days to get to know the computers. Our biggest worry was to put the beta testers who had subscribed an contract at Thendic to a disadvantage. So particular functions of the soft- and hardware of the computers had been locked. We had already before decided to show only those things that don't fall under the beta testers contract. So there was only the version 0.6x of MorphOS shown and Suse Linux was installed in a version 7.x. It would have been a simple thing for our Linux expert of the company SUSE and member of the U.d.N to install the new version 8.1 but this version wasn't officially been released, either. We could have had shown the MacOS, too, but unfortunately only two computers had been available.
So we restricted ourselves to the possible as it was the most important thing that everybody who was interested in the Pegasos could try it himself/herself without the need for us to be all the time at hand. This was accepted this way by the users, they tested and tried to crash the computers. At the end of the show was the Suse Linux in some parts German and in other parts English.
From Bavaria, Gera, Halle, Berlin, Hamburg, Flensburg, Osnabrück, Göttingen and from the Netherlands (there were surely still more places) had the users come to see and test the Pegasos. During the two days there had been no need to reinstall the systems from scratch. And this was exactly our goal!
We had been especially pleased that Mr. Michael Garlich from TITAN-Computer came and we could present a video of Motionstudio. Michael had been several hours with us and had given much information to the visitors about the progress of the software. And he took consideration of the beta testers and told only as much about the current version 9.x of MorphOS as he could take responsibility for. Of course we would have loved to see his developers team showing presentations on their systems but this wasn't possible because of existing contracts with sponsors.
On Sunday were Mrs. and Mr. Does of the company Vesalia at the show and gave information to the interested users. As we were already finishing there was still a discussion going on and we could only with smooth pressure move the group along. We were glad when we could hand the Pegasos computers over undamaged.
The Pegasos had been very well accepted by the PC and Linux users, too.
The following excerpt taken from a comment by "mk" from October, 06th 2002 describes exactly what people told us all over again:
»And then it's not only suitable for the living room but even for the bed room. No CPU fan, no fan on the
graphics board. Should the fan of the power supply even need to run because of the small power amount of the system
it was at least not hearable. When completing the computer you only have to look for quiet hard discs etc. and then you get really problems to tell whether the computer is switched on when you do this by just listening to the system«
But there had been more than the presentation of the Pegasos. On a PC video editing had been shown and explained in
a factual way and with much patience. We had been very astonished because of the many questions and often people had
told that not even at the specialists they'd experienced that much about editing of videos. That encourages us, of
course we will extend this area until the next show in spring 2003. Besides that had our PC experts been pestered to death with questions regarding the BIOS and the hardware.
Reports of single users regarding the event and their experiences at the show can be found under:
www.udnimweb.de/News.htm.
On our video page
you can watch a video of the Pegasos in action. Pictures of the event and of the Pegasos can be found under:
www.udnimweb.de/Boerse02.html.
Further images of the event (especially interesting for the people from Osnabrück (Germany)) are on the computer of our
Linux expert.
Many questions regarding the new operating system Jaguar and to the upgrading of old MACs to be able to install the OS X were asked our MAC users.
There'll be an comprehensive report in the Amiga Future that'll be written by Rene
Stelljes (member U.d.N.) for the magazine. Rene had explained the Pegasos on both days and he had also installed the software.
Two short story alongside the event:
1.) The Atari people had found a power supply at the flea market, connected it to the power point - "PENG" could only a dust cloud be seen, the upper floor had no power anymore. Oh, there's another power point, connecting the power supply with it - "PENG", down in the sales room no power anymore. Oh, one more power point, let's try it there once more - "PENG", that was the fuse of our room. Pegasos, Amiga, MAC and PC suddenly without power while accessing the hard disc, the agitation was very big. After the power was back again all computers booted without any problems. We hadn't seen the Atari people again after this, they left the event very early
2.) Several times people called via the cell phone number we had given, mainly because of price reducing cards or to tell us that the web cam was unusable because of the bad ISDN connection. But one call made us laugh, the person asked indeed whether we'd know where to find a free parking room but unfortunately we really couldn't answer as we hadn't installed a camera outside ;-).
Our result of the event:
It was great, we hadn't expected that much interest in the Pegasos, coming also from people who had heard for the first time about the Pegasos and MorphOS. And the questions we are receiving after the event show us the big interest. 300 visiting-cards were given away, we have two new members since the show. We thank all users who had gone the long way to us we'll certainly see at the next fair. And as always at the end, what comes next after this top event? Ralf and Otis have already something in the planning, more about this in March 2003 when it's time for: "Let's go to the Videobörse to Bremen".
Special thanks go to Landshut (Germany) to Markus Bindhammer who came especially to us by plane.

Event: Pegasos and MorphOS Demonstration in USA
Barring traffic jams or sniper fire I will demonstrate the modern
alternative home computer system Pegasos and MorphOS at the NCAUG
meeting today in McLean, Virginia, USA. My 14 year old nephew
David Fletcher will assist. To the best of my knowledge this will
be the first public demonstration of the system on the North
American continent.
We will show the hardware, certain graphical demos, a directory
utility, maybe a game, and I will tell everyone the latest
developments in the MorphOS scene and answer questions. We'll take
some pictures and upload them later this weekend.
Besides Pegasos there will be unrelated demos of LCD glasses, a 3D
game, VR Slingshot and plenty of other stuff from NCAUG members.
More information is at www.ncaug.org.

Digital Almanac III - News
There are some news of the astronomy program DA3:
- The email address has changed. It is now achim.stegemann@onlinehome.de. I therefore ask all customers and all who are interesed in this program to replace the old address by the new one.
- The new version of DA3 is nearly complete. Still only the HTML documentation has to be adopted.
- Additional to the HTML documentation a manual in PDF format is also in progress. This has the advantage of being able to print it as one thing. Because of high expenditures there will be no hardcover manual.
- Maybe there will be also a Czech locale for DA3.
- I guess that the complete distribution will be ready on December.

Amiga Arena: Interview with Chris Hodges (Poseidon USB)
Many users considered the name "Chris Hodges" a concept since the mid-nineteen nineties, since Chris (in addition to writing demos and tools) also authored PD games like "Tubes."
Most recently with the introduction of the USB cards "Subway" and "Highway" developed by Michael Böhmer, most users will again consider this concept, because Chris has authored "Poseidon USB," making it possible for Amiga users to use standard USB hardware.
In the interview with Amiga Arena he discusses how this development came about, the concept behind "Poseidon USB," and what more great stuff users may expect in the future.
You'll reach the interview here in German and English. (ps) (Translation: dm)

BenderIRC: DCCCHAT Now With PGP
Cyborg writes in: Well, it took a while but BenderIRC is finally making progress again. The program components that were lost in the hard-drive crash have been fully restored, and it is now possible to add a PGP-encoded communication over the Internet with BenderIRC's DCCCHAT.
At this time it's unfortunately still not possible to comfortably go from BenderIRC to the PGP-DCCCHAT, because a specialized CTCP command must be defined. Whoever would like to take part in this effort can let us know via email. Attention must be drawn to the fact that PGP2 and PGP5 are both supported but must be separated.
For some time now a help system has been on the BenderIRC website. It is for the purpose of simplifying the reporting of bugs, so that more people will send us bug reports. The future plans are to eliminate some of the smaller bugs and then add the long-awaited configuration/installation tool.

Version 2.0 of Videokonverter-GUI for ffmpeg + VideoCD-Authoring
Carsten Siegner wrote:
The GUI "Videokonverter" in version 2.0 is finished. I have build in all features of ffmpeg not suspending each other. New is the port for plugin's of other GUIs. A plugin named "VideoCD Authorung" is added. With this plugin you are able to create VideoCD for DVD-Players. This means only the Mode-2-Images are created.
You have to use a compatible Burning Software. A created sample from the plugin I burned with MakeCD and tested on a Panasonic DVD-RV41 and it runs without problems, but the burner has mentioned an error and stopped burning. The first few seconds were played. I have to fix this error and then it will be free for download.
Now you can burn nearly every video format to a VideoCD, usable on a DVD-Player. If you want to get the program now send an email to me.

Finnish Amiga Users Group's Meeting Showed AmigaOne and Pegasos
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Finnish Amiga Users Group's Meeting Showed AmigaOne and Pegasos
OULU, FINLAND - October 7th, 2002 - Finnish Amiga Users Group's annual
meeting was held in Oulu, Finland on September 28th, 2002. The meeting was
visited by some 60 people and this well exceeded last years visitor count.
This didn't come as a surprise, even though the location was a bit remote
for people living in the more populated south of Finland. After all, the
users group had a lot more to show this year.
Travelling all the way from Holland, Sharwin and Rakesh Raghoebardayal of
Coyote Flux/Thendic France, were there to demonstrate MorphOS on the
Pegasos. This was the first public demonstration of Pegasos in Finland.
Sharwin and Rakesh spent the entire afternoon showing off the speed and
capabilities of their machine. Impressive demonstrations included J Miner,
a photogrammetry software that created 3D images out of 2D photographs,
and various features of MorphOS and emulation software.
Also on hand to discuss their work on MorphOS were the Finnish developers
and long-time Amiga enthusiasts Teemu Suikki and Harry Sintonen. They
travelled quite a distance as well, paid by Thendic France. Tomi Ollila
of the original AmiTCP group was also present at the venue. Discussions
about computer technology, operating systems and life in general were
rampant throughout the day. Finnish Amiga Users Group offered free
refreshments to all visitors, and some of the people went on to continue
the discussions at a dinner later that night.
Gentle Eye Ky, the only active Amiga dealer in Finland, was also present
with some of their inventory and two interesting pieces of new technology.
The AmigaOneG3-SE and a prototype AmigaOne-XE motherboards were on display.
Unfortunately the AmigaOneG3-SE had no working BIOS and the AmigaOne-XE,
which was all ready to go and hooked up, didn't boot Linux all the way.
This may be due to a configuration error or the fact that it was only a
prototype. It was interesting to see AmigaOne there anyway.
Finnish Amiga Users Group also held their official annual meeting and the
club is moving ahead with the help of new people and new ideas - although
more input and involvement is always welcome. The event was covered on the
Internet via IRC, a Shoutcast audio connection, digital photography and a
webcam. Unfortunately technical problems delayed these services quite a bit.
More photographs and notes from the meeting will be made available via the
users group website (http://saku.amigafin.org) and the Saku e-zine.
Finnish Amiga Users Group is interested in showcasing all progress made in
the extended Amiga community. In addition to the above-mentioned people,
Amiga Inc. was also invited to participate. We were frequently asked about
this by our members and visitors, but unfortunately Amiga Inc. did not
respond to emails from group officials this time. We hope to display
AmigaDE and other products from Amiga in the future, like we did last year
with our demonstartions of the Party Pack and the AmigaDE Player.
If you or your company are interested in getting in touch with Finnish
Amiga users, please contact the chairman of the Finnish Amiga Users Group,
Anu Seilonen, at thoriel@sci.fi to organize something. You do not have to
come here in person, we are happy to demonstrate products for you at our
meetings. Finnish Amiga Users Group is operated by volunteers interested
in supporting a common hobby, so our services are usually free of charge.
The Finnish Amiga Users Group would like to extend its warmest thank you
to those who supported our meeting and made it a truly memorable event. We
look forward to bringing together like-minded computer hobbyists in the
future as well.

registered, non-profit organization dedicated to helping Finnish Amiga

Official Amiga and Retro Computing 2002 Website on-line
Today the official website for the German Amiga exhibition of this year
is on-line. Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computer organizes this fair,
which will take place on 7th and 8th December 2002 in the Eurogress
Aachen. Thus Schönfeld breaks the good old tradition to let the
exhibition take place in Cologne but Aachen is a city worth seeing, and
the proximity to the Benelux countries is reliably a large advantage.
Refrained from it the organizer gets ready to break with another
tradition since he would like to turn around the trend of the last
years after, and attract more visitor than before.
The current website is only a preversion of the final one. It will be filled up with contnent bit by bit.

Mediator: PatchInt V1.2 (3rd release)
Already on 3rd October 2002, Matthew Allatt has released version 1.2 (3rd
release) of 'PatchInt' for the PCI board 'Mediator' from Elbox.
The tool gets rid of the lockups which occur with various sound, ethernet,
serial and other PCI boards.
This update should fix the sound distortion which occurred with the
SoundBlaster after some time of playback.
Matthew Allatt writes on this:
"I'd just like to let you all know that I've finished a new version of
PatchInt..." - "I found that when using PatchInt, and playing tunes
through the SoundBlaster card, the sound would become distored after a
while. Others have reported this to me as well, so, having found some
time, I've written a new version which should hopefully fix this."

Amiga Society: Schlachtfeld page updated and Status
From the Amiga Society site:
"The Schlachtfeld page has received a new design. The contents is not that far
yet, but the first graphics for a second level can already be seen.
Over the next weeks, some submenus etc. will be added to the page and some more
information will be provided.
Possibly the page will also get its own domain soon.
We still hope to have at least a beta of Phase I (with the old graphics) until
the show in December.
According to current estimation of the situation, Phase I will probably not
get over the beta stage.
The graphics of Phase II have advanced that much already that a parallel
development of code and graphics is beginning to make sense."

MIDI: Amiga version of 'Aseq' frozen
aseq writes:
"Part of my Amiga hardware died (bvision, perhaps more) so I have to freeze
development of the Amiga version of a midi and audio sequencer called
Aseq (www.aseq.de).
On a brighter side ;-) I can now spend more time on porting it to QNX,
Macintosh and Linux. A version for Pegasos-Morhpos has been planned, but
seeing as I can not yet even afford to replace Amiga hardware it will be a
while.
In case you care about dead Amiga hardware, I am using an A1200 with ppc
card and bvision, the system is not showing up any image through the gfx card
and I have no way of detecting if the ppc card is working, but I assume it
is as the system will boot normally from floppy. Not from hd though, a gfx
card related thing in the startup may very well screw up, or blizkick, which
could mean the ppc card IS dead (also) after all." (sd) (Translation: cb)

USB-driver: New version of Poseidon version 1.31
Chris Hodges writes:
Dear Poseidon users,
during these gray autumn days, just when you seem lonely and sad, and all
seems dull and dark, waiting for new things to appear, there is this small
light on this virtual planet. This location for recovering happiness is
called
http://www.platon42.de/poseidon.html
That's the place, where you can download the latest, mindboggingly cheerful
update of Poseidon. And no, it's not Christmas just yet. Therefore, the
only new things you will get are more GUI's to play with (and I know you
love to play with the settings ;) ) and the ability to finally mount RDB
Amiga partitions automatically! But the good news does not stop here, no,
you can even boot from RDB partitions now (and using boot95 from the
fat95 package, you probably also can boot from FAT formatted media, if you
prefer). Sounds good, eh?
For the people that cannot wait for the HID class to pop up, there is a new
experimental wheelmouse mode in the bootmouse which supports a horizontal
wheel on some mice. But be sure to have MUIWheelPatch installed! Don't be
disappointed, if it doesn't work with your mouse, it's just a quick hack
that works with one wheel mouse I've got here, but not with the other
(because it doesn't send wheel information in boot protocol).
There is also something new, but this will be published in a seperate press
statement.
So enjoy the new stuff, and wait what happens next.
Changelog
~~~
poseidon.library 1.31
- Added stack config support.
Trident 0.12
- Added stack config stuff.
- Misc changes.
hub.class 1.17
- Fixed a bug where the hub task wouldn't
neccessarily fail out from the outer
loop on hub removal.
bootmouse.class 1.11
- Added experimental quick & hacky wheelmouse support. Will probably only
work with a few mice (the ones that report wheel movement in byte 4
even with boot protocol enabled -- works with my Sigma mouse, doesn't
work with my Logitech wireless desktop (no wheelmouse data in boot
protocol). Be sure you have MUIWheelPatch installed.
- Added class (defaults) and binding GUI to enable wheelmouse support.
massstorage.class 1.15
- Booting from RDB implemented (added a flag for this in the GUI aswell).
Thanks to Ralph Schmidt for contributing the CreateSegment() code.
- Misc internal changes.
- RDB Mounting added. Now RDB formatted partitions will be mounted
automagically on media insertion aswell.
- Mounting is not done from the device task anymore (as this could cause
a deadlock, if the filesystem wanted to do device IO before returning
from the mount call), but from a tiny seperate task, living only for
the moment :)
- Changed implementation of FIX_INQUIRY to fake inquiry. Old fix inquiry
is still present for wrong inquiry requests. Fake Inquiry should fix
a lot of broken devices.
- Added option to disable the initial bulk reset, as some broken devices
seem to choke on it (and crash their firmware, stupid thing).
- Changed NakTimeout prefs value from ms to 1/10secs. This seems more
reasonable. Please check your configs.
- Added option to delay the device startup. This is needed for some
broken devices, which crash their firmware, if they receive commands
during their setup (Nikon Coolpix).
- Added possibility to change the DOSType. If the DOSType is NOT
0x464154xx (FATx), LowCyl will not be 0 and autodetection of FAT95
will be disabled. This should allow the use of CrossDOS, but this has
not been tested.
- Added saving of default prefs.
- Added default prefs GUI (class config).
printer.class 1.14
- Added implementation of CMD_START/CMD_STOP.
- Added class GUI with two options: one disables the sending of the init
sequence on Epson printers, the other one disables the SOFT_RESET
command which causes problems on some broken printers.
Amiga University site updates and additions
We've got some cool new stuff online for you:
Site Mirrors:
- Amiga Source is now mirrored on our site, thanks Scott!
- We still maintain site mirrors of the excellent Blitz Basic,
Samplitude Opus (with software downloads) and Amiga
Interactive Guide sites, too.
Site Archives:
We have added two GREAT Amiga site archives from the somewhat recent past:
- National Amiga tech pages: these are full of great tech information,
including pinouts, motherboard configs and lots of accelerator
information - These were originally done by Greg Scott and used
to be on National Amiga's website - thanks to Larry S. and Joe at
Archtech in London, Ontario!
- Spock's Logical Amiga Pages: As many of you may remember, this was a great
site that has been offline for some time, unfortunately due to its author,
Eric Robertson, passing on last fall. Thanks to Donald Sowell for
providing this data as hopefully a little memorial to Eric's fondness for
the Amiga and his excellent site.
- Amiga Realm archive mirrors (12 of them) - Thanks to Paul Andrews for
providing data to mirror their site archives!
Additional stuff:
- 303 Tracker - this is a cool Roland TB303 emulator you can run on
your Amiga - software downloads included - thanks to Jeroen Schellekens
for his site archive and software
Events page:
- We have added an easy to find Events page for upcoming Amiga events & shows,
and we pledge to keep it current! :) If you have an event or show coming up
anywhere in the world, let us know so we can post it immediately.
- Thanks, keep on coming back and if you have additional Amiga sites for us
to help you mirror or archive (to preserve them), just let us know when/how.
The archive that was published on October 1st has been extended by the
Windows 2000 drivers today. These are still beta versions of the drivers.
We still don't know if they work under Windows XP, because we don't use
There's now a stand-alone German disk version of the game Hilt II. In the future you will just need the "mission disk" to download new missions.
Simon Neumann writes: Amiga Speed is celebrating its first birthday. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all the Speed testers for their help and all visitors for their feedback. You've made it possible for Amiga Speed to improve and expand. That should also continue into the future, so I'm asking you to keep giving me suggestions for improvement and your reactions. This is the only way Amiga Speed can continue and meet the desires of its visitors.
Hot: Hard-Drives: Can You Fit Any More on There?
The 200 gigabyte Western Digital hard-drive codenamed Drivezilla, originally scheduled for August, has finally been released. The model WD2000BB comes with 2 MB cache, and the WD2000JB with 8 MB cache. Each has three platters, 6 heads, spins at 7200 RPM and uses the UDMA-100 interface.
You'll find the complete article under the title link.
Note: At this time there is no possibility with the Acard IDE-to-SCSI adapter (under firmware version 3.64) to make use of the entire hard-drive capacity, because these new drives use a trick to overcome the 137 UDMA-100 limit. The same thing goes for the new drives from
Maxtor
UDMA-133 hard-drives which exceed 160 gigabytes.
Acard adapters below firmware version 3.60 have a corresponding version sticker on the controller chip. Older adapters (until now only on PC or Mac, and perhaps Mac emulators) may be updated with the new firmware at the
support page.
Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Lots of news this month. Unfortunately, while none of it can be
called "bad" news, much of it is unpleasant. The tone this month seems
to be controversy. There's a legal statement from the Morph OS team,
another from Merlancia, seeming controversy involving Elbox, and a
bunch of unhappiness over Amithlon. Thought that was all settled, but
now comes Amithlon XL and controvery resurfaces. We're not even sure
what Amithlon XL is. We certainly haven't received any press releases
or definitive information about it. What we do have is reported below.
Meanwhile, there are some interesting stories on new products, and on
Amiga shows. Much more fun "stuff".
Have a look at the stories we've got for you, make up your own minds
on the controversies and, if you're like us, hope for a more positive
month next time.
Editor
September 5, 2002 - From the desk of Bill McEwen
Greetings to one and all:
I would first like to thank all of those that I had the chance to
meet in Sacramento. While a short trip it was indeed great fun and
real delight meeting with all of you and hearing not only the
encouraging words, but also sharing in your concerns, desires, and
dreams. We are looking forward to deliver on what we discussed with
you.
When we purchased Amiga from Gateway there were many out there who
said that we would fail. There were many out there who have worked
against our efforts, and others that have misrepresented fact and
manipulated privileged information in order to further their obviously
self serving goals. There have been those who have wronged us, and
caused us damage.
But, guess what? We are still here! We are still delivering! We are
going to stay here! Amiga is about people, technology, excellence, we
are a most tenacious people, and we have the community to prove it.
Has it always gone according to plan? no. Have we made some
adjustments to the plan? yes. Are we delivering on the plan? yes. Will
we allow others to dictate our future? Absolutely not. Period..
Because of you, the Amiga dream lives, because of you, Amiga's are
still being used throughout the world performing amazing tasks and
activities, and because of you, we are still here and moving forward.
Amiga is a giant resting for the day of the fight, and gaining
strength quietly, for, as we embark on this mission together, nothing
will tear us apart.
Thank you once again for supporting us, and showing to the world that
what was begun in 1985 was truly only the beginning.
Bill McEwen, and the Amiga Team
Amiga Club Members:
I would also like to take a minute and say a special howdy to all of
the club members. It is really encouraging to see all of the activity
and input from you with regards to the shirt design and name for the
club. The "I am Amiga" name did not go over as well as I had thought,
but in the next couple of weeks (after we get the ok from those who
already have the name that was selected) we will all have the name and
shirt design with which an be happy and proud to wear. Each member
will receive their first newsletter in the next two weeks, and there
will be all sorts of great announcements and information e, so look
forward to it in your inbox.
As a reminder we will be having a new drawing for an Amiga Enabled
Cell Phone in September, and we would encourage those of you who have
not joined yet, to get in here and do so. We have many plans and
activities coming up for the club, and once again for only $ 50.00 you
will receive the newsletter, Shirt and other special promotions. The
lifetime membership offer has ended, but we would encourage you to be
a part of something really exciting as the members will continue to
receive special discounts and exclusive programs directed at the
membership. We will honor the "$50.00 off" certificate for the next
members who join through the end of September, at which point we will
hold the draw for the new cell phone.
September 1st, 2002:
As mentioned in Sacramento at AmiWest, we had offered amnesty to
those people/companies/entities who have knowingly stolen our IP and
used it for their own gains, or who have shipped product knowing that
they are illegal had until the end of August in order for them to
comply and to get legal.
Now, I am not going to mention names nor am I going to get into a
public discourse on what is happening.. But legal action has begun. In
the next two weeks papers will be served. We will target one violator
at a time with the hope that we will send a very clear signal that
this is very serious, will not be permitted and will be stopped.
This is a private action between Amiga Inc, and those who wish to
continue in this practice. While we announced publicly our intentions,
the actions will be private. I am sure that everyone can understand
this and I hope will support this.
AmigaOne Update:
Well, the amazing team of Eyetech and Hyperion are doing a great job.
Many of you already have in your possession the AmigaOne boards, and
many more of you have seen the hardware in action. This is indeed
another major leap forward as we near the release of the new hardware
and OS 4.0. Eyetech and Alan Redhouse have been doing a great job of
keeping everyone informed of the progress, and we look forward to the
products release.
AmigaOS 4.0:
Hyperion and the team are making amazing strides here. The screen
shots that we all see and the updates from Ben and the people working
on it shows great progress. I know that they are working hard with
regard to the integration into the AmigaOne, and I for one am looking
forward to seeing it all working together, and from what I hear we are
not too far off from making that happen. With this stated we have
received some more shots of the interface from the OS 4.0 team. You
can see the new AmiDock screenshots here.
PDA/Cell Phone Update:
As mentioned in Sacramento the Amiga Anywhere Content Engine and
associated content will be shipping on the new SendoTM SmartPhoneTM
when it ships. Now, to answer the many e-mails that I have received
about the Sendo phone.... I do not know when the device will ship
commercially; it is out of our hands with regard to when they will
have the phone available. I will tell you that before the end of the
year we will be making at least two more Cell Phone announcements and
at least two more PDA announcements.
We are really starting to move on getting these business deals done
and there will be many more opportunities for our developers to create
new products for these cutting edge devices.
A Possible New Product Offering - Let me know your thoughts: In
recent dealings with one of our hardware OEM's they offered an
opportunity. This opportunity is for excellent laptop hardware at
excellent prices. They would be dual boot systems with Linux/UAE, and
Bernie Meyers product (formally known as Amithlon) pre-loaded on the
device. Here is a sample of some of the pricing that you could expect,
all prices quoted are in US$:
Intel® 1.2GHz CeleronTM Processor 256MB RAM 15.0" TFT Active Matrix
20GB Hard Drive DVD Drive Linux/UAE Ami* $999
Intel® 1.6GHz Pentium® 4 Processor 256MB RAM 15.0" XGA TFT Active
Matrix 20GB Hard Drive DVD/CDRW Combo Drive Linux/UAE Ami* $1579
Intel® 1.6GHz Pentium® 4 Processor 256MB RAM SXGA TFT Active Matrix
30GB Hard Drive DVD/CDRW Combo Drive Linux/UAE Ami* $1679
These examples are notebook computers. There are other options
available, but I am trying to find out how many of you would be
interested in purchasing these through your local Amiga dealer. Let us
know by sending an e-mail to interested@amiga.com. There are also
desktops and other configurations but I think that a notebook Amiga
would be compelling. Let us know.
The Product Formally Know as Amithlo*: As mentioned before Bernie
Meyers has a wonderful product, and we expected it to be out by now.
However there have been a couple of delays, none of these are
engineering driven, that has delayed the release. I can tell you that
the new product will be out very soon, and will offer some new
requested features, and from what I understand is really going to
knock your socks off. We will have an update concerning the timing of
this release and the new name very shortly. So contrary to what you
may have heard, it will be available soon.
Developers:
This message is an update for you. You have created some of the
greatest content that the world has ever known. Your skill sets and
your tenacity have overwhelmed many, and everyday you become more and
more important to the future.
If you have been sitting on the sidelines I encourage you to jump in.
We are getting requests from many of our OEM partners with regard to
content that they are looking for on their devices.
While it has been a slow start (as is always the case in developing a
market), this next quarter is going to see major movement, and
distribution. We have many programs ready to take place for the
Holiday season and we want you to be a part of it. So I encourage you
to jump in make contact with us. Join us in creating the future.
In closing I wish to thank each and every member of the Amiga family
for their support and good wishes in this amazing journey that we have
embarked upon together. We are closer today than we were yesterday to
the dreams and goals of Amiga. Tomorrow we will be closer again, and
soon we can all share in the rewards.
Sincerely,
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team
Petro Tyschtschenko, who worked at Commodore Büromaschinen GmbH since
October 1982 continues to work on his long-awaited memoirs. One of the
chapters planned allows Amiga fans to ask Petro questions, which he
will answer. Petro Tyschtschenko, a well-respected figure in the Amiga
community was chief of Amiga Technologies, a branch of ESCOM, which
bought all rights of Commodore and the Amiga in April 1995. As Escom
also got into bankruptcy 1996 Petro tried everyt hing to ensure the
survival of the Amiga and became chief of Amiga International, Inc.
after Gateway 2000 bought the rights in 1997. He encouraged the
further development of the AmigaOS, then released in version 3.5. In
April 2001 he retired o fficially from AMIGA Inc.. He has not left
altogether as he still goes to Amiga events to talk with Amiga fans
who were customers and are now friends. The Amiga Community now has
the opportunity to put forward some interesting questions about his
life and the Amiga. You can e-mail your questions to:
{An August story, but we just recently got the information. Brad}
August 12th, 2002
The results from our platform survey are in and counted! The volume
was higher than expected, and we thank those who took the time to fill
out the survey. The results of the survey distinguish three platform
choices above the rest. Amiga OS 4.0/AmigaOne PPC, Mac OSX, and Linux
i86 being the heads above the rest. Here is a loose review of these
three platforms and how development will be handled. {Edited,
eliminating all but the Amiga section. Brad}
Amiga OS 4.0/AmigaOne PPC - Development for this "platform" has two
interesting twists to it. First, PageStream Amiga should run in
emulation mode on this system, so Amiga customers can leverage their
existing version of PageStream. Second, customers don't actually have
this "platform" yet, so while there is probably going to be a decent
installed base, there is of course currently no existing installed
base of customers! All that being said, if Amiga OS 4.0 and AmigaOne
PPC is released in a form similar to what is being talked about, and a
reasonable number of our customers get the "platform", we will be
developing a new version of PageStream which is compiled natively on
the PPC, and will use what OS 4.0 functionality is deemed appropriate
for PageStream. We also expect to make an i86 version of PageStream
for Amithlon as well. The costs to develop these versions and the
perceived demand will determine if they are bundled with the "classic"
Amiga version of PageStream, or sold separately. Most likely this
development will be done by Deron Kazmaier, as he is the most involved
these days with the Amiga libraries. Luckily for him, this development
can't begin until the new OS is released, since he has enough to keep
him busy right now.
02-Sep-2002: MorphOS position paper about its legal status
There have been many rumours regarding MorphOS and its legal
standing. After careful consideration, we have concluded that those
allegations are unfounded, those most frequently raised being the
following two.
1. Stolen code
It has often been said that MorphOS is based on stolen source code.
Why would anyone go through the trouble of stealing a code, and
jeopardise his legal standing, when code sufficiently approximate has
been released to the public with the blessings of the holding company?
2. Unfair Competition
It would be ideal for a company not to have competition but this is
not what free trade is all about. MorphOS however has up until now
competed with no other product simply because it is a work in progress
free product, with time limitations. The past beta version in
particular has relied on other true Operating Systems and their
presence, thus perhaps enhancing those OSs marketability through added
functionality. This however will not be the case when MorphOS is
released to the public as a final product. Competition should thus be
expected in the future.
On the other hand, given the persistent empty allegations and actions
taken against MorphOS, we have a pretty strong case of anticompetitive
actions performed against us.
Such actions, this not being a complete list, include the posting of
various messages delivering empty, repeated threats and the direct
involvement against MorphOS being presented in a TV show.
Although it is clear to us that we can pursue legal action against
those defamatory acts, we prefer as a matter of policy to settle
accounts outside courts. Patience has of course its limits and since
we can afford a long legal battle, if forced, we shall take action.
For those purposes we have taken the following steps:
a) Analysed all data available to us, interviewed people involved,
and verified the consistency of all information. Although, as
anticipated, we found nothing new or contradictory, this is something
that we should do.
b) Analysed all allegation raised and those which are possible to be
raised as a ``last resort'' attempt. Although allegations are easy to
be raised, and are thus many, we have concluded that they are weak, if
not unfounded, at the very best. Our analysis was based on MorphOS
past, present and future.
c) Ascertained counter actions that will be spawned from filling an
action against us. Dragging people in court just in the vain hope to
intimidate them or disrupt their business does have consequences.
d) Ascertained all harmful actions made against us, collected
defamatory statements, analysed further conduct. Additionally, we
investigated the possibility of intellectual property belonging to us
being unlawfully exploited.
e) Prepared a full draft legal document, concerning the above points.
Emphasis has been given on countering the allegations, rather than
taking the offensive which is not within our current interests.
Despite that, the offensive part is sizeable.
f) Preliminary consulted lawyers outside the company's resources so
as to verify some conceptions of ours.
We are here and we are ready. Legal battles may not be our preferred
route of action but we can most certainly perform well if needed.
Best regards,
All of us...:)
Merlancia Industries Clarifies Questions Regarding Current Legal
Status
To all concerned with recent discussions and/or questions regarding
the current legal status of Merlancia Industries and all Merlancia
Companies:
Merlancia Industries is still alive and functioning as a private
company. The mentioned corporate dissolution on ANN and possible other
internet sites has to do with a paperwork error on our behalf. All S
class corporations are required by the Arizona Corporation Commission
(ACC) to file annual repots on inner corporate activities for the
purpose of showing that the corporation is still in existence. The
purpose of this is to allow the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC)
to 'throw away' any dead companies in their database.
It is a fact that this paperwork was not received by the Arizona
Corporation Commission (ACC) for this year. We are currently
investigating this, and will most likely have the situation resolved
in a matter of days.
Dissolution is not the same as insolvency and/or bankruptcy.
Merlancia still continues to function as a private company and will
regain its status as an Arizona Subchapter S corporation shortly.
Currently we are recognized by the state as a private company. The
only difference between the two is how the company is organized.
Merlancia is not only alive, and in a state of financial solvency,
but we are working on both hardware and software products for the
industrial market. As soon as an OS solution is available to us for
the Amiga ® market, we will be ready to release product. Until such is
available, we will continue to offer support for current Amiga and
multimedia products, and continue to offer wholesale and retail
products for the multimedia and industrial markets. Any questions on
this matter should be directed to merlancia industries at the address
above.
In the meanwhile...
Please note the new www.merlancia.com website. There have been many
updates and changes, and the new graphic interface is almost out of
beta. All portions of the old merlancia.com website are now available
on the new, and the old site will be deleted shortly.
Our software programmers are working on a new ordering system based
on Rebol ® technology which will become available in the coming weeks,
as well as other products including a new internet software suite to
be given away free as part of the AmigaZone Internet Services that we
offer. This software package is going to be freely distributable and
offered for free on CD-ROM which will ab available for the cost of
mailing or included with orders shipped from many Amiga ® dealers
worldwide.
If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact us at
the addresses shown above, or via e-mail or telephone. Additional
contact information is available on the Merlancia.com website. Thank
you for your interest in Merlancia Industries.
Regarding so-called "AmithlonXL"
================================
* I have absolutely no knowledge of this "product" beyond that which
is publicly available on Amiga news sites.
* I am not in any way involved with this "product".
* At the current time, it is unclear (to me at least) whether this is
supposed to be an add-on for existing Amithlon users (akin to the
Elbox "Multimedia CD", simply offering a collection of new drivers),
or whether it is meant to be something including emulator executable
and ROM files.
* If it is just a collection of drivers, I have no problem with it.
About bloody time, I'd say.
* If, however, someone is planning to distribute my IP (as contained
in the emulator executable), I'd strongly advise to reconsider, as
neither Harald Frank nor Haage&Partner have any license to do so.
Furthermore, to the best of my knowledge, neither of those parties
have a license from Amiga Inc for the distribution of kickstart
images.
* The announcements on www.amiga-news.de and www.ann.lu also talked
about the demo machine being equipped with a Dual Head Matrox card. I
sincerely hope that this is not an indication that my multi-head
capable gfx driver for Amithlon is considered or presented as part
of"AmithlonXL", as the license attached to that driver quite clearly
prohibits it.
* Let me also reiterate that of the contents of the amithlon_contrib*
packages released by me, ONLY the parts under the GPL are available
for inclusion with any Harald Frank or H&P product, and that inclusion
of those parts would require the strict adherence to the licensing
terms of the GPL.
* Obviously, I won't be supporting an "AmithlonXL" which violates my
intellectual property rights in any way. This would certainly include
making sure that the proprietary parts of any further contrib packages
I release for the users of the original Amithlon would not work with
such an "AmithlonXL". Personally, I despise crap like that, but what
can I do?
* I would finally like to ask everyone to recognize that at the
current time, to the best of my knowledge "AmithlonXL" is purely a
Harald Frank idea --- I have yet to see a single word about it from
Haage&Partner. So please don't abuse H&P over something they, for all
I know, might not even know about.
{While this item refers to a show now past, we thought we'd run it in
light of the press release from Mr. Meyer, above. We haven't found
much else "official" about AmithlonXL. Brad}
AmithlonXL world premiere at O.A.S.E.2 event in Graz
The O.A.S.E.2 event, which will be held this weekend in Graz, will
see the first public demonstration of AmithlonXL components. Some of
the parts shown would regularly be first available only with the
release of the announced OS4 operating system.
The new stuff demonstrated there, will include Audio drivers for
SBLive, TerraTec Solo1, TerraTec 512i, CMedia and many many others.
However, because
of the short time we had, we were unable to get all the hardware to
demonstrate all new Audio drivers.
The Network connection will be established trough a RealTek 100Mbit
card controlled by the brandnew TCP/IP-Stack RoadShow from well known
Olaf Barthel. The features of RoadShow will include great services as
PPPoE, firewall and extended routing possibilities.
The system will be presented by Mr. Schober on his AthlonXP 1800.
This machine will be equipped with SoundBlasterLive, RealTek 100Mbit
Network Adapter and Matrox DualHead graphics card.
If possible, some benchmarks with the new FFS2 file sytem will be
made, but if time should prove to be short for those, we will deliver
their results on our Amithlon product home page later.
More information about AmithlonXL and AmigaOS XL Updates will be
available shortly on the usual web sites of our distributor
Haage&Partner. Naturally these will also contain information about
pricing and availability.
19. September 2002:
The current differences between every party involved with the
Amithlon project are by way not that easy as they are described in the
internet discussions - often from one perspective only. Our contract
regarding the distribution rights for Amithlon is still valid. We have
been reluctant with public statements, cause we try to resolve the
differencs between the parties privately. We want to resolve the
problem and would like to see the contract being fulfilled by all
parties. The internet audience can not help with these negotiations
and will often be used, to spread the own oppinions as the only ones
that are true. Also the one, who cries the loudest, just expresses the
own perspective. To solve the conflict round on Amithlon it is
important to mediate between the different perspectives in private
negotiations.
Title: Elbox explains Poseidon issue
Sept. 20, 2002
This is an official statement on behalf of the Elbox Computer company
aimed at explanation of the recent misunderstanding concerning support
for the Spider USB cards in the Poseidon stack.
Chris Hodges, author of the Poseidon stack, approached our company
several weeks ago with the proposal of co-operation. He suggested that
we prepared hardware drivers for Mediator for the Poseidon to enable
operation of USB cards, the support to which under our own USB stack
was to be released in a short time.
The proposal from Mr. Hodges was analysed in detail and accepted
after many additional mutual considerations.
Its basic principles were presented in the mutually accepted
announcement: http://www.elbox.com/news_02_09_11B.html
To clarify the issues once and for good:
1. The number of models / types / of USB PCI cards supported by our
drivers was never the subject matter of the mutual considerations.
Elbox, the party who prepared the drivers, decides which cards to
support.
2. One of our proposal: bundling by us or by our distributors the
registered version of the Poseidon stack with the USB PCI cards, was
rejected by the author of the Poseidon stack. And we accepted it.
Two days ago, we were surprised with the message signed by Mr.Hodges,
but posted by the producer of the USB card for the Zorro II slots. Mr.
Hodges has not contacted us since the Sunday presentation of the
Spider card in which he participated. Therefore, yesterday we asked
him to provide explanations on his part. We have received his reply
today.
We understand from his explanations that the whole misunderstanding
is due to the fact that Mr. Hodges did not know that almost all the
objections in the Mediator list were posted against him by people who
do not have Mediator busboards and do not want to have them.
Those who shout loudest "on behalf of Mediator users" own other PCI
solutions, which are not produced by Elbox, or they do not even have
Amiga computers at all.
There were messages in the list from just a few "loud" people. On the
other hand, the messages coming in recent days to us express huge
support and satisfaction from our releasing the Spider USB 2.0 card.
It should be clear to everybody that the registration method chosen
by Mr. Hodges for the Poseidon stack, directly with him, is the most
advantageous option for Mediator users (when price is concerned). In
this way they avoid all taxes and similar extra fees, which would have
to be added when registration is performed by the companies selling
the registered Poseidon with the USB hardware.
I hope this explains everything.
Let me take the opportunity to inform you that Spider USB 2.0 cards
are now on their way to our distributors and will be available from
them as of the coming Monday.
Elbox Computer is pleased to announce that its drivers to PCI USB
cards in the Mediator busboard operate under the Poseidon USB stack.
These drivers have been prepared by Elbox programmers as a result of
co-operation started a few weeks ago by Chris Hodges, author of the
Poseidon stack.
As the Poseidon stack is already supported by authors of third-party
commercial software, we have decided that releasing another, our own,
USB stack for Amiga under such circumstances would mean doubling
effort of Amiga programmers.
We are sure that high-quality software included in the Poseidon stack
package and our hardware-optimised drivers resulting in high
performance achieved by PCI USB cards in Mediator will satisfy even
the most demanding users.
The unregistered, time-limited version of the Poseidon USB stack will
be available in the Mediator Multimedia CD. Registration of the
Poseidon stack for Mediator users will be provided by Chris Hodges.
About Poseidon:
The Poseidon USB Stack is a software solution that unleashes the
possibilities of the Universal Serial Bus (USB) and the devices with
USB interface, ranging from mice, keyboards, tablets, joysticks,
printers, scanners, webcams, digicams, flash card readers, zip drives,
floppy disk drives, harddisks, memory sticks, ethernet adapters,
scanners and audio adapters to less common things like power supplies,
GPS location devices or finger print readers. It is intended to be a
solution for all systems. For more info about Poseidon stack please
visit Chris Hodges' website.
About Mediator:
The Mediator PCI busboard line is designed so as to enable expanding
the Amiga computers with a wide range of standard PCI cards like
Graphic cards, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet network cards, Modem cards,
ISDN cards, USB and SCSI cards, Sound cards and Multimedia cards: TV
tuner and MPEG-2 hardware decoders. Expanding the Amiga with the
Mediator PCI busboard opens the way to employing the power of the
latest PowerPC G3/G4 processors in Amiga, around which SharkPPC and
SharkPPC+ cards are based. For more info about Mediator please visit
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DiscreetFX Announces Wild Flyer For The Amiga Video Toaster Flyer®
Our beta testers have reported no major problems with the latest
build of Wild Flyer so we will be shipping it shortly to our Video
Toaster Flyer customers. What is Wild Flyer you ask? It is a Front End
application to the very powerful and often misunderstood program Wild
Fire. Wildfire 7 is ADO animation sequencing, 3D effects, transitions,
and animation package by Andreas Maschke. It can be compared to SGI
Flint or Flame systems and it is capable of creating amazing 3D
effects by mapping video sequences.
The bad news about Wild Fire has always been the steep learning curve
and very difficult to understand user interface. Wild Flyer changes
all this. It uses all the power of Wild Fire as its background render
engine. Wild Flyer gives this amazing German application an easy to
use storyboard interface. All actions happen within the Video Toaster
Flyer screen. Users can just drag and drop the ADO animation sequences
within their Flyer and Wild Flyer takes care of the rest.
Imagine the power of an SGI Flint or Flame system but on your Amiga
VT Flyer! And it is very easy to use unlike these high-end SGI ADO
solutions. WF attains its speed by using the power of a PowerPC
processor as its rendering effects engine. The PPC processor does not
have to be in your Amiga. It can be a networked Amiga One or Pegasos
computer. If you already have a Phase 5 CyberstormPPC card in your
Amiga this will also work but will be slower. One of our beta testers
reports on the Pegasos Betatester system he is getting near real-time
ADO Effects from Wild Flyer.
Wild Flyer features include
1. Height-field deforms, cubes that automatically unfold and fold
again.
2. Lightwave object support.
3. 3D magnet effects, 3D transitional morphing, unlimited
mathematical deformations, twists, sphere mapping, twirling, water
transitions, perspective transforms and more!
4. Easy to use interface that opens on the Video Toaster Flyer
screen.
5. All effects are pure 24bit, no pixelizing or jaggie edges.
6. Full support for all Amiga PowerPC solutions
a. Amiga One running Amiga OS 4.0 (We hope, need OS 4.0 to test this)
b. Pegasos running MorphOS 1.0 (Tested and working)
c. SharkPPC (We hope, we need one to test it)
d. Cyberstorm PPC running PowerUP (Tested and working)
Minimum system
Amiga 4000 with CyberstormPPC card, Video Toaster 4000 & Flyer card,
18MB RAM, 1 GB Harddisk.
Recommended system
Amiga 4000 with Mediator PCI busboard and SharkPPC card, Video
Toaster 4000 & Flyer card. Or Amiga 4000 with Video Toaster 4000,
Flyer card and Network card that supports TCP/IP networked to Amiga
One or Pegasus computer system.
Game: Tales of Tamar - Final-CD-Version
Tales of Tamar is an Internet and round based game for Amiga, Atari, Mac, Linux and PC by Eternity Entertainment Software. Further details and meaningful screenshots can be found at the titlelink.
The final CD version is finished. As the newest feature it is to be registered that the computer races are now able to move on the map and by doing this become recognizable. Furthermore now the numbers of inhabitants of the cities are determined on the basis of the built buildings and are not evaluated any longer simply after the individual city stages.
In the last months again approx. 50 - 100 smaller bugs were removed. Sometimes one may not believe it, how many are hidden in such a game.
As one of the next features the map screen is extended by a second menu. On this an overview of the map is to be seen, a branch table for the own figures and a wind rose with the possibility to scroll in each direction. This is supplied in one of the first updates and shows thus also the future development of TOT.
Congratulations Martin and Mona!
Martin Baute and Mona Niewöhner married on the 21th September 2002 in Usingen.
Our congratulations go to them..
Martin 'solar' Baute was considerably involved in the setting up of the English mirror of amiga-news.de. For a long time he had translated the complete news alone into English, before he had to stop that because of vocational reasons.
