AmigaOS4: Weather software Wet 4.0 released
Chris Young has released an update of his weather software Wet to version 4.0. The weather is displayed in the Workbench titlebar, as an icon or using a Reaction-based GUI.

New in version 4.0 is especially the support for displaying forecasted weather up to 24 hours in advance (where available). Further changes can be found in the corresponding readme file.

Linux: OpenSuSE 10.0 for PowerPC / Short guide for installation on Pegasos
Due to the large number of requests, again a PowerPC version of the Linux distribution OpenSuSE has been released in version 10.0 beta 3 ("Bangalore") at the title link.

At PPCZone Marcel 'Frostwork' Unbehaun has published a short guide for installing OpenSuSE on the Pegasos. All you need is a Pegasos-compatible kernel, no further modifications are required.

How to install OpenSuSE on Pegasos computers:
  • Boot the first SuSE-CD with the following parameters: boot cd suseboot/inst32 minmemory=0 MemYastText=0 sysrq=1
  • You will be guided through the installation process
  • When installation of the first CD is finished, the computer will reboot
  • Now copy the kernel-modules of a Pegasos-compatible kernel to /lib/modules/"kernelversion" of your new system
  • Copy a Pegasos-compatible kernel to your boot-hd (if it isn't already there; if you choose a special filesystem like reiserfs, make sure it is compiled into your kernel)
  • In the Open Firmware, a usual linux-boot parameter-path is everything you will need: boot "SuseKernel" root=/dev/your-chosen-hd (plus additional parameters you want to use, like video=xxx)
  • SuSE should boot now with your kernel and finish installation

MorphOS: libnix updated
There's a new libnix available for MorphOS in the download area of the MorphOS Developer Connection. It is recommended that all registered developers updated an installed MorphOS SDK with this new version.

Among other things were the following changed or are new:
  • added lfind/lsearch.
  • fixed access(), which didn't work properly at all.
  • optimized fseek(), should be much faster with in-buffer seeks now.
  • fixed scanf() (and all related functions (including strtod)) parsing of sequence of floats.
  • qsort() no longer compares the same elements against eachother (pointless, and broke some compare routines).
  • support printf/scanf (and related functions) %hh formatting.

MorphOS: ressources-friendly MUI settings (2nd Update)
Oliver 'Bladerunner' Hummel made ressources friendly MUI settings available for users of the PowerUp version of MorphOS. In addition, he recommends the use of the skin "Rainy Blue" that is available on the CD. The effect is clearly visible. Further help can be found in our forum.

Download: Muilight.prefs (15 KB)

Update: (22:15, 28.08.05, snx)
Since the main reason for the performance gain seems to be to avoid the use of gradients, Oliver Hummel has released new MUI settings at MorphZone. Because of a minor mistake in the original settings for Oliver's Cyberstorm skin it is recommended for its users to download these new settings, too.

Alternatively, our reader Jean Holzammer suggests to avoid using skins at all and force the original look of Intuition instead. To do so, you have to rename (or delete) the skins directory in both SYS:Prefs and MOSSYS:Prefs.

Update 2: (22:38, 28.08.05, snx)
Another hint has been posted by 'rzookol' - according to him, the missing font vera.ttf in the mossys:fonts/_ttf directory is also a reason for a lower performance of the PowerUp version. As a solution, you can rename a copy of the font verase.ttf: "copy sys:morphos/fonts/_ttf/verase.ttf sys:morphos/fonts/_ttf/vera.ttf". Pegasos owners can copy the missing font from their corresponding MorphOS installation. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Microsoft (E-mail)

10 years Windows 95
On August the 24th, 1995 Windows 95 replaced MS-DOS with a simple to use graphical user interface and a fast system kernel. Contemporaneous Office 95 had been released and the Microsoft Network service (MSN) has been lauched.

Windows 95 was based on 32 bit technolgy and replaced the MS-DOS extension Windows 3.x. Thus, the PC evolved to an universal work tool and conquered the digital household. This version became the most successfull software of its time for business and private customers. The new features included the start button with its embedded menu, long file names and internet connectivity usind TCP/IP of the integrated MSN client. Thus, Windows 95 was anticipating many imortant developments. A similar big step for the IT will be the coming release of Windows Vista.

Today Windows, as a former concurrent system to the Amiga, plays an important role for the Amiga scene providing a base for the Amiga emulator WinUAE. (nba) (Translation: ub)

AmigaOS 4: Drum-Computer RockBEAT 1.1
RockBEAT is a simple software drum machine (Screenshot) for AmigaOS 4. It is a tool for musicians that allows you to create drumming tracks. It can create multiple tracks, each one being 4x 4/4 measures with 16th notes. You can save individual tracks as wav files, or the whole thing as one big song. You can drop in your own 16bit 44100Hz PCM WAV samples in the drumsamples/ folder if you like. The new version 1.1 is out now including several fixes.

Changes in detail:
  • No more grim reaper alerts when starting then stopping playback quickly I removed an AbortIO() call that wasnt really needed.
  • Theres no more excess silence at the end of wav files for individually saved tracks.
  • Button graphics are freed up when quitting now.
  • All message ports are emptied and deleted when quitting. No more "unfreed signals" error messages now, and I think it has brought up stability a little.
  • Drum samples limit changed to 20. It used to crash after more than 10 samples were loaded due to a silly programming error. i.e. looping up to 20 times when there were only 10 available spaces in the array.
  • Adding new samples to the drumsamples/ folder will no longer make old projects invalid.
  • Better compatibility with some WAVs. RockBEAT used to assume a certain WAV header value was a always certain size, but I've found out it can be different.
  • I have included a cool cymbal sample to the default drumsamples/set.
The demo is restricted to 10 minutes. If you like it, you can purchase a keyfile from the author for $15 USD. (nba)
