News about SView-Ports
SuperView is a well known graphics converting and viewing tool well knwon of the Amiga. The author Andreas Kleinert is working on porting SView to other systems, and publishes a status report:

The GUI preview of the planned WinSView tool kit still is at alpha state while subject of intensive development. Hence it still is not available, but by this you will get some initial impression on what it is about.

Development takes place on two levels:
  • 1. The underlying C++ class library for image handling (loading, saving)
  • 2. The program surface (GUI) in form of a MFC 4.1-based design

Both originally were developed using Watcom C/C++ - for the class library part and for testing it we use the Watcom C/C++ V11 ability to develop 32 bit software for the Win9x/NT character mode (DOS box), and for the GUI part BlueSky's Visual Programmer is utilized.

But the design of the C++ classes is completely platform independent (e.g. regarding endianess) and suitable to be ported for a wide range of operating systems, e.g. certain Linux derives, BeOS or QNX. Additionally, no compiler specific C++ specialities are used ("baseline C++") and utilization from a clean C program is no problem.
More infos can be found at the title link.

Elbox: SHARK ATTACK
Detailed information from Elbox about their new PowerPC processor boards for Amiga 1200, 3000 and 4000. Announced are PPC G3/G4 boards named SHARK with various processors which can be fitted into the MEDIATOR PCI A1200 and MEDIATOR PCI A3/4000 bus boards:

From ELBOX press@elbox.com
Subject SHARK ATTACK

ELBOX COMPUTER
Krakow, 12 October 2000

ELBOX COMPUTER is proud to announce the breath-taking new product: the
most powerful PowerPC accelerator for Amiga 1200, 3000 and 4000.

The new accelerator - SharkPPC G3/G4 board - is a pure PowerPC-based
processor card to be fitted in MEDIATOR PCI A1200 and MEDIATOR PCI
A3/4000 busboards.

SharkPPC G3/G4 cards give Amiga Classic computers the top performance of
the latest PowerPC technology and the power of the long-awaited next
generation computer.

New PowerPC750 processors installed in SharkPPC G3/G4 cards offer the
following performance: 17.4SPECint95@400MHz, 11.7SPECfp95@400MHz,
928DMIPS@400MHz, 22.4SPECint95@550MHz, 13.3SPECfp95@550MHz,
1276DMIPS@550MHz.

The SharkPPC G3/G4 design combines speed of PowerPC G3/G4 processors
with extremely fast on-board memory interface controlling two SDRAM
modules, up to 512MB each. The peak memory transfer rate reaches
582MB/s. The accelerator card takes control over the PCI busboard with a
66MHz PCI 2.1 compliant interface fitted with a two-channel DMA
controller.

Communication between the existing Amiga turbo accelerator and the
SharkPPC G3/G4 card is executed with the shared SDRAM memory and the
interrupt controller in the MEDIATOR PCI hardware. The new accelerator
offers excellent bandwidth to any PCI card: 264 MB/s (132 MB/s in the
system with 33 MHz PCI cards). This powerful performance in PCI graphic
cards enables development of new superb games/graphic applications in
the native PPC code.

All the currently available Amiga software may be executed in the 68k
processor with full use of all the PCI cards installed in the computer.
It is possible because both accelerator cards installed in the computer
access all the PCI cards independently.

On top of that, in new applications to be developed both accelerators
may enhance performance of each other just the same way as it is done in
advanced multi-processor systems. This is due to the fact that
processors in both accelerators (68k/PPC and SharkPPC) work fully
simultaneously, which is for the first time available for Amiga users.

The first SharkPPC G3/G4 cards for developers will be available by end
of November, with production planned to commence in January 2001.

When new speed versions of PowerPC processors are available, the
SharkPPC line will be expanded with more models.

The suggested retail price (VAT excl.) for the SharkPPC G3/G4
accelerators are:

SharkPPC G3/G4 750@400................ EUR 390.00
(PowerPC750@400MHz and 256KB@400MHz L2 Cache)

SharkPPC G3/G4 750@550................ EUR 520.00
(PowerPC750@550MHz and 256KB@550MHz L2 Cache)

Pricing of versions with other processors will be announced separately.

NEW

Please look for our further releases:

1. Development progress of PCI Sound and TV card drivers for MEDIATOR
PCI 1200.

2. MEDIATOR development line (A4000 and A3000).

Heavy Domain Quarrel between VMC and Individual Computers!
Sure one ore the other usere already realized that the website of Harald Frank VMC is taken by foreign content. The reader is welcomed to a completely new pay system in the internet. As contact address jens@jschoenfeld.de is given.

Calling Harald Frank provided clearness. A heavy domain quarrel between Individual Computers and VMC is the cause. Until this is cleared up VMC will be accessible at http://www.usbshop.de.

At the title link you will find the following statement by VMC:

«10-11-2000Unbelievable, www.vmc.de was stolen!
As we had to realize this afternoon the owner of our domain was, pretending wrong facts, renamed to Mr. Schönfeld by the internet provider Schlund.

The internet pages viewed at the domain which was up to now our domain, have nothing to do with our company, and also every e-mail to the addresses of VMC are sent to Mr. Schönfeld directly, by-passing the mail secret.

Because of this we ask all of the customers to send their e-mails to our usbshop.de domain which means to you, just to change the name vmc.de into usbshop.de in the e-mail addresses for the next days.

According to information via telephone by Individual Computers Jens Schonefeld will use this campaign to force a better position of him to the company VMC Harald Frank regarding wholesale prices for VMC driver software.»

MPF: Information Appliances
At the Microprocessor Forum 2000 in San Jose, USA, an all day opening lecture on the subject information appliances took place given by Steve Leibson, chief analyser of MicroDesign Resources and chief editor of the microprocessor report.

After main-frames, mini-computer, micro-computers, and PCs the fifth computer generation comes into public view by the IAs. Appliances of this generation distinguish on application oriented design. Meaning design and functionality of these appliances is styled for one application, e.g. in the case of web-pads on the internet or in case of game consoles on easy gaming using your TV-set. This causes self describing operation and hence easy use of this appliances.

The article (German) on tecchannel.de summarizes the lecture in view of types of appliances, Connectivity (Bluetooth, IrDA, etc.), processors, as well as displays, and gives a result at the end of the article. This result complains about that manufacturers tend to implement too much features in their initial IAs. By this operation again becomes complicated, and prices increase which automates failure, according to Steve Leibson.

A Lot of Eternity News
Some things are changing at Eternity, but in main everything will stay the same: Eternity is and will keep being Amiga vendor, Amiga publisher, and distributor of Amiga hardware and software.

This news is most important:

The URL has changed!
http://www.eternity-computer.de from now on is the new online home of Eternity. Please change your bookmarks! Many thanks to Marc Albrecht for hosting the Eternity pages free of charge for several years.

To make getting used to the new URL more easy for users we have raised another of our popular special projects:
For orderings within the next two weeks the customer will get 1 DM discount on every of his/her order already placed in 2000. With this we want to thank our many faithful customers and want to give them a very special bonus.

EAsys! Servicepack 3
For the system enhancer EAsys! distributed by Eternity service-pack 3 was released. This fixes many little bugs, and automatic creation of icons is implemented. Who wants to learn about the other new features should get it soon.

MASplayer
The MASplayer which we distribute since early this month already sells well. Happily our customers are not dumb, so we received some suggestions on additional possible use of the MASplayer:
  • MPEG-Movie-Player could surrender playing of sound completely to the MAS and thereby would have to deal almost only with playing the movie.
  • Internet-Phone would be possible with acceptable speed and quality also on Amigas.
  • Internet-Radio via MASplayer is already under construction.

Interested software authors can contact us via e-mail to eternity@pride.de. We heavily support developers.

Free co-workers wanted:
Eternity Hard- & Software is looking for a free co-worker who would independent deal with project coordination around Eternity's activities. Good knowledge of English (speaking and writing) are advantageous. Interested people would contact eternity@pride.de, please.
