AmigaOS 4: MediaVault 1.5.0
MediaVault is an open source application for AmigaOS 4 which can be used to discover online radio stations and, since Version 1.4.0, also to listen to podcasts. An external player like AmigaAmp and the jansson.library v2.12.1 are required. About the latest version 1.5.0 the author George Sokianos has written:

"I just released a new version of MediaVault for everyone to play with this weekend. With this version, a couple of new features arrived and a few fixes as well. With MediaVault v1.5.0 you will be able to mark online radio stations and podcasts as your favourite ones and have them listed in a separate list. This way you will be able to find and start listening to them much faster, without the need to search all the time for them.

To do that, above the play button, there is now a small yellow star with a plus sign, which you can use to add the radio station or podcast to the favourite list. This then changes to a star with a red minus sign, so to remove it from the favourite list. To enable those buttons you have first to find in the lists the one you want, select it and then the buttons will be enabled.

While we are on that, there is also one more button available, whenever you select a podcast episode, which can be found beside the little star, above the play button. By clicking on that when an episode is selected, the episode is added at the "Listen Later" list, under the Podcast section at the left sidebar. This way you can mark episodes you would like to listen to when you have more time.

If you already use the previous version, please use the self-update process, which you can find in the application menu. This can be used to update to the latest available version automatically, and before you do that, the whole changelog is shown.

I would like to thank all of my supporters for helping me develop MediaVault, adding new features and making it better and better." (dr)

AmigaOS 4: Comparison of video players (Polish)
In a detailed article - Polish original bzw. automatic translation - the author 'MUFA' has reviewed the different video players available for AmigaOS 4: Tested with an AmigaOne X1000 equipped with a Radeon HD R9 270 graphics card and an AmigaOne X5000 equipped with a Radeon RX 560 graphics card. Test candidates has been on the one hand the free MPlayer and FFPlay as well as the two commercial players DvPlayer and Emotion. He also has include in his consideration the support of the Unified Video Decoder (UVD).

Verdict: As of now, he recommends Emotion for overall performance. He awards second place to MPlayer for the best player without UVD support as well as its exemplary stability and free availability. Only in third place he sees DvPlayer, whereby he points out that with Hans De Ruiter a proven expert is entrusted with the further development and he therefore expects a lot from future versions. Text adventure: "Darkest Hour" released
Darkest Hour is an old-fashioned text adventure game, available for several platforms and also for AmigaOS 3.

Die Story: "Halloween is almost here, but something is happening that's much scarier than the annual haunted house at the fire hall. There are rumors of a vampire - a real one - attacking people at night. Of course most people think it's just silly; who wouldn't? But people are going missing, and others swear they've seen it. It's up to you to track down this vampire, stop it if possible. The question is, will you even survive the night?" (dr)

Amiga disks on PC: DrawBridge 2.7
Robert Smith has updated his project 'DrawBridge' (Disk Reader and Writer Bridge)for read Amiga disks using a common PC disk drive. According to the author, additional to improved diagnostics, improved reading/writing, extra features and new UI version 2.7 mainly offers HD floppy disk support. All this work has fed back into WinUAE meaning that WinUAE (and soon Amiberry) will also support real HD disks in real-time.

As he stated, "the official WinUAE will support this in v4.9 when it’s released via a plug-in (FloppyBridge) from my site. That plug-in gives you a few more options to increase speed."

Besides, it is possible to be placed on a waiting list: Smith sells his little board for USB Slimline disk drives for 25 British Pound plus shipping. The boards are fully compatible to Arduino Software (IDE) which enables future firmware updates.
All documents of Smith's project are available on GitHub under a free license. (dr)

GitHub project: Amiga 4000 accelerator board 'Z3660'
On GitHub the developer 'shanshe' has started a project for the Amiga 4000 accelerator board 'Z3660' which is based on John "Chucky" Hertell's A3660 board as well as the Z-turn Board. In contrast to the A3660 (currently) only 060 CPU are supported. If Z-turn FPGA is not used, then you get a simple A3660. The only difference is that all A3660 PLDs are replaced by a XC95144XL-TQ144 CPLD. If you use a Z-turn FPGA, then you can add 128 MB of CPU RAM (more RAM, RTG, AHI, USB, SCSI are planned in the future). (dr)

MorphOS: QR-Code generator 'QRCodeLab'
MorphOS developer Frank Mariak has released a MUI tool called 'QRCodeLab' which can be used to easily create QR codes and afterwards copying them to the Clipboard or saving them as pictures. We have tested the tool using our Amiga-News website: Working!

As the author wrote, "currently, it only supported encoding to UTF8 and non of the other compressed formats like numeric and/or alphanumeric are supported to reduce the code size. It dynamically adjusts the QRCode version based on the length of string."
If you have any suggestions or ideas for improvement, please feel free to contact the author via mail. (dr)

Countdown: C64 & Amiga game music remade as epic film scores
Running until Sunday, 24. October 00:39 CEST, a Kickstarter campaign tries to finance the C64 & Amiga game music album 'Epic Action Vol1' (amiga-news.de reported). So far 13.000 Euro from the required 23.000 Euro were payed. On our request a member of Prismatic Realms told that a failure of the financing also definitely mean the end for the project. But in any case the group will continue to develop retro games. (dr)

AmigaGuide to HTML converter: GuideML 3.16 for AmigaOS 3/4
GuideML is an AmigaGuide to HTML converter which can convert most AmigaGuides and since v3.1 also has a GUI. After 13 years the author Chris Young has updated the tool, which originally was started by Richard Körber. Additional to some bug fixes, now the tool uses the locale.library v38+ which should remove accents from characters for better compatibility. And version 3.16 introduces basic support for the '@{img' command of AmigaOS 3.2.

The command line version now requires OS2.1 (but no longer tested by the author) while the GUI version at least requires AmigaOS 3.2. The archive includes also a version for Amiga OS4 (screenshots). In our little test the conversion worked fine with different AmigaGuide files. But the tool does not create a protocol file so you do not know what maybe went wrong. A 'main.html' file always is created as well as seperate html files and for the other chapters.

The program is open source, the source code available on GitHub. (dr)

Music editor: MusicMaker V8 Version 3.12 (update)
Thomas Winischhofer's 'MusicMaker V8' ('MMV8') is a sample-based music editor which the author started back in 1986 as hobby project. As the author wrote, "much later it published in France and the German speaking parts of Europe by Data Becker (V1.76) and by Wolf Software (V2.358, Germany only)." This version 3 dates back to late 1992 and was never published as a commercial product.

In the readme it is explained, that MMV8 uses "macros" which - unlike "patterns" in trackers - apply to a single channel only. Those "macros" are then put in a playing order, which is called a track. As MMV8 provides up to eight audio channels, up to eight tracks can be set up.

As Thomas Winischhofer told us some time ago, he "doesn't really want to do anything more on the MM except occasionally fix bugs that stand out." That would not be worth reporting. However, this has turned into a few updates in recent times, each of which has been published on Aminet. As the developer writes, he has small windows of time at the moment, which, unlike the DSP drivers - his other Amiga project of the recent past) he can use sitting at the emulator to fix bugs and improve the source code from 1986 and the following years. But he definitely doesn't want to take away the character and charm of the 80s from the program.

In the latest versions the author mainly worked on the GUI and fixed several minor bugs.

Who of our readers had or has used the music editor?

Update: (07:43, 24.10.21, dr)

Meanwhile version 3.12 is available. Now "m" now shows instrument paths and minor inconvenience in the install script were fixed. (dr)
