Dennis "Psyria" Lohr (ANF)

R-Type Title Song as Ringing Sound for your Cell Phone
Dennis Lohr, aka Psyria, has got another licence from Chris Huelsbeck to convert one of his songs into cell phone format. This time it's the title melody of "R-Type".

For everybody who doesn't need a picture, here's the notation sequence:
4G#4, 4D#5, 4G#5, 8D#6, 2C#.6, 8C6, 8A#5, 4C.6, 8G#5, 4D#.5, 8G#5,
2C#.5, 8D#5, 8F5, 4D#5, 4D#5, 4G#4, 4D#5, 8D#6, 2C#.6, 8C6, 8A#5,
4C.6, 8G#5, 4D#.5, 8G#5, 2A#.5, 8G#5, 8A#5, 4G#5, 8G#5, 1P

First number: kind of the note (full, half, quarter, ...)
Letter : note height (if need be with "#" + ".")
Third number: Octave (note height)

People who'd rather see a picture can find this at Psyria on the homepage (title link) at the download area. On "www.mp3.com/huelsbeck" you can find the old pieces of Chris Huelsbeck in studio quality.

The next conversion for the handy will be "Giana Sisters". Be anxious. ;)

Psyria wrote: You have to set the speed for the song for yourself!
This is needed because every cell phone producer uses a different way for the speed display. For example: for Siemens cell phones it's 1 = slow to 30 = fast and for Nokia cell phones it's in bpm.

On Siemens cell phones it would be 7 or 8 ;) (tested on S25 & S35) (Translation: mj)

REBOL ML

REBOL: Function Dictionary, Sound Support, VID FAQ
Function dictionary
On the 10. May 2001 has REBOL Technologies released an update of the 'Function Dictionary' where the functions of the REBOL system are described. The functions are sorted by categories and alphabetically. The dictionary is available as HTML file (almost 900 KB) and in the REBOL desktop via 'REBOL.com/Ref-Make'. This script loads around 40 KB from the REBOL site and generates the file '/public/www.rebol.com/view/docs/dictionary.html' within the REBOL directory.

Sound support
REBOL/View/Pro supports from the version 1.2 on the output of sound samples. For the loading of samples is a subset of the WAV format (PCM samples with 8 or 16 Bit) supported.

The sound output is possible on the systems AmigaOS (AHI, audio.device), BeOS, Linux/x86 (Open Sound System) and Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000.

Further information can be taken from the REBOL sound documentation.

VID-FAQ
A faq regarding the REBOL GUI dialect 'VID' can be found via the REBOL desktop on http://www.compkarori.co.nz/index.r within 'VidWiki'.

Information: REBOL
REBOL is a cross platform system developed by Carl Sassenrath (Amiga-Exec) that was first released in November 1997. The REBOL programming language allows an easy use of the internet including the programming of CGI scripts and the easy creation of GUIs.

On 24. April 2001 was REBOL/View V1.1 released. From this version on REBOL offers the REBOL desktop. This makes it possible to put REBOL scripts on every web server, so that these scripts can be called and executed via the desktop. Herewith REBOL offers similar possibilities as Java does. The examples listed on REBOL include games like Tetris and Minesweeper and tools like a pocket calculator and a script for sending e-mails. (Translation: sd)

Amiga port of SiN Finished, but...
From a posting of Ben Hermans of Hyperion Entertainment it is evident that the Amiga port of the game 'SiN' is ready but the actual Amiga hardware isn't enough to cope with the requirements of the game. The port will be hold back until the AmigaOne hits the market.

Hermans said that particularly the lower-end Blizzard acceleration cards couldn't offer the CPU speed needed for 'SiN'. (Translation: mj)

Intel: Itanium Set in May
Intel plans the release of the first batch Itanium chips for the end of this month. It is expected that two or three versions of this chip will arrive. One with 733 Mhz and a 800-Mhz version with 2 MB cache. A 800-Mhz version with 4 MB cache is said to come, too. Amiga should now mention whether an Itanium compatible translator (VP) is planned.

Itanium chips are 64Bit processors that can among other things manage 32 GB memory. Enough for complete websites or the content of big harddrives. IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and other big computer distributors will soon present computers with 2, 4 and even with 16 processors that for the first time will have the 64 bit Itanium chip. Amiga Network News more Comfortable
Christian Kemp did a technical extension of the Amiga Network News website (ANN), re-activated the notify service, and changed the HTML code.

Now the page optionally supports cookies. If cookies are active the current settings, own name, and e-mail address is saved to cookies. This facilitates entering of comments.

The notify service was re-activated, so subscribers are automatically informed about updates, again.

The layout was reset to the previous version and all of the MS Internet Explorer specific changes has been removed, since it seemed to be impossible to request all of the Amiga browser variants, which indeed announce themselves as CSS2 capable browsers via spoofing, but do not support every CSS2 feature.

Amiga Network News offers commentable topical messages from the Amiga sector. (sd)

dynAMIte CD Version News
The recently started dynAMIte CD project is progressing in some way, but unfortunately not as fast as we had hoped. We are on a good way to it, but still need some pre-orders to achieve a minimum of 100. We got some questions about the content of the CD:
  • dynAMIte (the game itself will stay freeware!)
  • New dynAMIte Gfx-Styles
  • New dynAMIte Sample sets
  • At least 100 new levels
  • Extended manual in any imaginable language
  • Big Intro
  • CD sound track
  • and some more surprises which we hopefully will be able announce, soon.
We are looking forward to more pre-orders! (ps)

Amiga Arena: Special Price for VideoEasel
In co-operation with Thomas Richter Amiga Arena makes VideoEasel available at a special price. The special price is valid until the 31.06.2001. You can find the special price campaign in the section "Aktionen"!

About VideoEasel:
It is tricky to describe this program, it's best described as a "mathematical toy", entertainment on the highest level.

Maybe Conway's "Game of Life" is known, a cellular automaton that can be used to imitate "biological looking" processes. At its time this "game" went through the press, with its variations. Indeed VE can deal yet more; things like the kinetic gas theory, oscillating chemical reactions, simulated circuits, diffusion processes and more can be simulated. Own automatons can be developed, VE is programmable.

The idea is simple: the screen is divided in cells (the screen pixels), the condition of a grid pixel at the time t+1 then depends on the condition of the cell itself and their neighborhood at the time t via a simple (programmable) rule. You can here already simulate very complex processes with very simple rules, and the results aren't always easily predictable. some of the automatons have serious applications and are used as models in the statical physics ( grid gas, Ising model of the ferromagnetism), partly it's just an interesting toy (Game of Life, Brian's Brain, many more).

VE comes with a manual that contains several dozens experiments next to example data starting points. Just test out the demo version. Further information can be found at Thor Software. (ps)

Digital Almanac III - Update and News
There's again an update of the astronomical program ´Digital Almanac III´ with new features and improvements. The new version is numbered 3.3.

Highlights this time are:
  • Calculation of "Killer asteroids" (so called PHAs). Who comes nearest to the earth?
  • IFF ANIM compression now also in the PPC mode. For animations and pictures only the actual star map is saved, not the whole screen anymore.
  • Extended toolbar with buttons in the GlowIcon style by Martin Merz.
  • The DA III screen has now a name, so that some commodities (for example MCP) can access it. With a new menu item you can now fade in the screen bar with depth gadget.
Bugfixes:
  • The ways of several small bodies was drawn wrong because of a false Perihel calculation.
  • The printout was unfortunately distorted since several versions. This error was unfortunately discovered just now.
As usual, the update will be sent to all registered users via email.

Remarks to WinUAE and MorphOS:
DA III runs perfectly under the new WinUAE JIT version in the 020/FPU mode. Under older UAE versions (for example: Cloanto's latest version in the AmigaForever v4) DA III is only usable with the non-FPU version in the pure 020 mode, as the FPU emulation here is still buggy. DA III in all versions does not run under MorphOS. It seems that not all FPU instructions are correctly emulated. Only the 020 version runs with restrictions. A special MorphOS version will definitely not happen. When the WarpOS version of DA III runs stable under MorphOS, a special MorphOS version becomes unnecessary.

PC port?
DA III won't be ported to Windows, Linux or another OS. Previous requests for such a port had unfortunately to be refused. DA III is and keeps an Amiga program. Especially under Windows there's a big number of similar programs of high value. (ps)

WinUAE: Kaillera Beta 1 - Gaming via the Net
First off
WinUAE-Kaillera was developed by Sane and Thrill. The original WinUAE was developed by Brian King, based on the original UAE. Brian King has no part whatsoever in the development of WinUAE-Kaillera, therefore do not send him any questions about this beta-release, as he can't answer them. Kaillera, the engine on which this product is based, is developed by Christophe Thibault, who also has nothing to do with the actual development of WinUAE-Kaillera. See at the end of the document for related websites. Bug-related questions should go to poopy@postmark.net .

Description
WinUAE-Kaillera enables users of this great emulator to play against another person over a TCP/IP network, such as the internet. For this it uses the Kaillera-Engine, a program developed specifically for enabling emulators to achieve netplay. As Kaillera itself already has proven its merits on emulators such as Mame and Bliss, this was the perfect choice for the development of this program. In this first BETA release there is support for (shared) keyboard and joystick. Mouse does NOT work yet (we're working hard on that one :). Do not expect this BETA release to work flawless. This version uses the source code as released on the WinUAE page, v0.8.14. As there are new versions out already, it could be that this version does not work on your computer. Do not send bug reports/questions about this please.

Usage
First of all: netplay requires a fast and good internet connection. A typical ping to the other player should not exceed 150 ms, otherwise the game could become difficult to handle. In theory there is no reason you can't run it on a 56K modem, apart from the fact that modems sometimes prove to be unreliable. Judge for yourself. When you start WinUAE-Kaillera you will notice a few changes over the original WinUAE. On the 'Configuration'-tab there is an extra button 'Start Kaillera', furthermore the 'Gameport'-tab has three extra buttons 'Remote 0', 'Remote 1' and 'None' (default).

Before playing, both players should first acquire the exact same configuration-file. Any differences in these can/will cause the game to 'desync'. Ofcourse the game/kickstart should also be the same.

The 'Remote X' buttons must be configured prior to any netplay. They decide who is using what joyport on the remote end. If you are using joystick 0 in port 0, and the remote player is using joystick 0 in port 1, you should enable 'remote 1'. The remote player should do exactly the reverse and enable 'remote 0'. Furthermore make sure your joystick settings are right. Each player should use joystick 0 on its local port, and have joystick 1 configured for the remote port. See screenshots for clarification.

After you both verified your settings are correct on both ends, press 'Start Kaillera' on the 'Configuration'-tab. The Kaillera-window will now be opened, and you can use a server from the list that appears on the screen or enter an IP of another Kaillera- server. If you are both on the server, one player creates a game using 'create game' on the bottom. After that, the other player can simply join the game, by selecting it and pressing 'join'. If you are both ready, the player that created the game starts it by pressing 'start game', and off you go!

Finally, the local player can start the game, after which both emulators will start loading the game.

The emulator will now sync up (this takes a little while) and the game will be loading. You can now play just as you would play on a single computer, with the extra addition that the keyboard is shared. You can both press keys on it to choose extra options. For clarity and fair play, it is recommended that you decide beforehand who is handling the keyboard.

Close information about how to use it including screenshots and hints how to solve problems are available in the documentation.

This is about a beta release which still might contain bugs. Bug reports can be sent to poopy@postmark.net

Back To The Roots Amiga News 229
'Back to the Roots' is a website that offers old Amiga classic games for download with the agreement of the copyright owners. New added are the two great games 'Carrier Command' and 'Battle Command'. Those can be downloaded for free from "Back to the Roots". Besides these two, there are also 'Valhalla 2', 'Garfield', 'Hattrick!', 'Soldier of Light', 'Detroit' and many other games available.

For friends of effects there were tons of brilliant demos at the annual Mekka Symposium demo party. The best of those were added to the BTTR archive. New pixel art works by artists like Critikill or Acryl can be admired. Great screenshots of the 3D action game Genetic Species, the Turrican clone Land of Genesis and the classic Disposable Hero are waiting in the picture gallery, too. For music friends there are 115 new pieces.

Tales of Tamar

50 Additional Beta Testers for T.o.T. Wanted
50 additional beta tester are being looked for Tales of Tamar, which is an internet-based round game for Amiga, Atari, Linux and PC developed by Eternity Entertainment Software. With the new version v0.35 the player is able to "annex land" for the first time.

By annexing land your empire becomes larger and the proportion between raw material and population will change enormously. We will see that the high prices for weapons and arming will go down at the markets and will even out on a normal level. And we will see how countries will be formed and rulers occupy Tamar.

Annexing is nothing different than leading war which is the fight against the original inhabitant of a country. To that function Tales of Tamar offers an efficient fighting machine. It assesses armed forces in over 50 points and then let the armies fight against each other to the rules of the mediaeval fighting strategy.

That fighting machine take note of the following aspects:
  • Arming
  • Weapons
  • Second weapons
  • Experience
  • Training
  • Cavalry
  • Armies with missiles
  • Ratio of troops
  • Morality
  • Surroundings
  • Race
  • Exhaustion

  • When Enforcer or CyberGuard is running the MMU: text turns blue.
  • Using xadmaster.library for extracting archives.
  • Improved Bastard file checking a bit
  • Added memory checking and file checking for Bobek link virus. Please wait for a new update of the xvs.library for removals of the Bastard and Bobek virus...
  • Shows only the diskdrives that you have.
  • Removed the requester 'VirusExecutor is already running'. When starting VE when VE is already running the screen just comes to front and gets active.
NOTE!

Because of the new Bobek virus I had to release this version of VirusExecutor. Hope it works with the xadmaster.library ;)

Virus Help Denmark: New Link-Virus Found
A new link-virus has been found, the installer is still unknown, we are looking for it. This new virus will add 460 bytes to every file that is opened or executed. That also means that even an antivirus program (that the virus is unknown to), will infect every file it checks for virus. The new virus patches dos.library ExNext function to spread it self. The new virus has been given the name "BOBEK", this is the text you can read in the end of every infected tile.

Okay, here is what we know so far:

Archive name : ?
Archive size : ?
Virus name : BOBEK
Virus size : 460 bytes
Infection : dos.library ExNext

At this time no anti-virus program can find this new virus, so take big care out there. We are right now testing a beta version of the anti-virus program VirusExecutor, that will be able to find the virus and to remove it from memory.

If you find or have the installer for this virus, please send it to me.
