New systems of ARES - e.g. complete systems with refurbished SAM440-motherboards
Under the name "Boingbox (refurbished SAM440@733MHZ)", Pascal Papara now also offers complete systems with used Sam440-motherboards. According to him it is used hardware which was cleaned, enhanced with new components and checked and which has guarantee (not warranty) of one year.

The AresOne is replaced by the "ARES XEON Workstation". Additionally for the first time ARM-based systems are available called "ARES II". (cg) (Translation: dr)

Cloanto: Workbench 3.1 Floppy Disk Set
A few days ago, Cloanto started offering bootable CF cards containing Workbench 3.1. Meanwhile a floppy disk set is available, consisting of 6 DD disks (available from Vesalia, Amigakit and Amigastore.eu amongst others).

Just like they did with the CF card, Cloanto is using the Cloanto owned trademarks "Workbench" and "AmigaForever" as branding, this is why the previously unused moniker "Workbench 3.1" is introduced - with version 3.1 of the system software, Commodore originally used the term "AmigaOS".

Update: (05.11.2014, 17:15, cg)

We've been informed by Cloanto that this distribution has a few improvements over the original 3.1 disk set:
  • Updated C/Version (Y2K patch)
  • Addition of Libs/workbench.library (for A-4000T 3.1 ROMs and 3.X ROMs)
  • Updated S/Startup-Sequence (for 3.X ROMs)
  • Updated Installer 44.10 and FastFileSystem 45.9 (to support larger disks)
  • Installer itself is now part of the system installation (inside the Utilities directory)

Set-Top-Box: Android-based "Met@box" with Amiga emulator
In the late 1990s, the German company PIOS (among others Stefan Dohmeyer, Dave Haynie, Peter Kittel) developed PPC-hardware for the operating system Apple and Amiga but devices like the PIOS One or the "AmiJoe" were never produced in series.

After changing the name into "Met@box", a Coldfire-based Set-Top-Box with the same name was developed. The software was written by some well-known Amiga developers. Only a few months after first devices have been delivered to developers, the company became insolvent. Actually there was a final attempt to rescue the company by the shareholders but after a second insolvency proceeding and after the company was prosecuted for course fraud, it had to shut down.

Under the IP-address 188.122.70.211 (we do not known a corresponding domain) since shortly a website of the "new" Met@box was established: The Android-based device is supposed to have access to the Google Play Store and play TV productions from a wide range of sources - e.g. CYMTV ChannelStore, from the Internet or local data media and which is supposed to have access to the world wide web or eMail.

Obviously the company is going to take up the history of the trademark in the Amiga market because additional to the motto "we're b@ck" it was announced that an Amiga emulator with "free ROMs" will be installed on the devices.

Meanwhile we got information that Ron van Herk is the leader of CYMTV and Met@box. The former Amiga salesman ("Computer City") did experiment with Set-Top-Boxes with regard to the Amiga in the past: In co-operation with the present Amiga-News publisher Martin Heine the company AHT was founded which announced an AROS-based Box after licensing AmigaOS 4 had failed. In the end, only "Tribbox" which works under Linux was put on the market. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AROS: Icaros Desktop 2.0
After 18 months of development, version 2.0 of the AROS/x86-distribution Icaros Desktop has been released which includes major changes. In particular, the distribution (just like its previous "work-in-progress"-versions) is based on backports provided by Krzysztof 'Deadwood' Śmiechowicz. His ABIv0-on-trunk includes changes for the application binary interface ABIv0 which is used unter AROS/x86 so far and which were initially implmented for the forthcoming ABI-version 1.

The appereance has also changed because Icaros Desktop now uses DirectoryOpus 5 Magellan as user-interface (screenshot). Additionally the 68k-environment for Amiga games and applications has been polsihed and the faster TLSF memory management has been integrated. ZuneView, PictureAlbum and ScalOS (screenshot) have been added as new applications.

DirectoryOpus was pre-configured to make it a "reliable, usable and enjoyable replacement for Wanderer". ADF and ISO files now can be mounted and unmounted with ease via context menu or DiskImage GUI (screenshot). Regarding the 68k-emulation (screenshot) it is now possible to "run AmigaOS 3.X and AROS M68K concurrently". Applications have been updated e.g. LunaPaint (screenshot).

As usual Icaros Desktop is available in two versions: The executable Live!-package which includes a DVD-ISO-file for a native installation and a virtual machine for QEMU under Windows as well as the Light-version which only includes the most important files but fits on a CD-ROM or a 1-GB-USB-stick.

Paolo Besser was not only supported by Krzysztof Śmiechowicz who backported and updated the browser, bit also by Neil Cafferkey, who fixed several bugs in AROS, Oliver Brunner, who updated Janus-UAE, and Szilárd Biró, who ported DirectoryOpus 5 Magellan to AROS and helped to developed it further, as well as by 'Magorium' and other beta testers.
