AmigaOS 4: Text editor DumbPad 0.3
Roman 'kas1e' Kargin wanted to create a simple and stable text editor with "DumbPad". It is his first Reaction-based project, version 0.3 already supports tabs and notifications uses AISS for menu and button graphics. The project "definitely has bugs" but already runs quite stably. The developer would be grateful for tests of the editor on other systems.

Programming competition: AmiGameJam 2025 started
The motto of this year's edition of the AmigaGameJam programming competition is 'Return of the Arcade': The task is to create a title that could be set in a typical Arcade and "would be worthy of being given its own arcade cabinet". The deadline for developers is December 1st, and only original game ideas are permitted - no ports. The development of submitted games must not have begun before 1 June.

Filesysbox.library: Version 54.7 for AmigaOS and AROS/x86 (update)
The FUSE compatible filesysbox.library, which is used by the SMB2 handler, has been updated for AmigaOS 3.x and AROS/x86.

Martin Ulrich, co-developer of Ports of Call, has passed away
Martin Ulrich, the co-developer of the Amiga classic Ports of Call, passed away on 31 March 2025 at the age of 76. The sad news was announced by his long-time developer colleague Rolf-Dieter Klein. Ulrich was born on 22 October 1948. Together with Klein, he developed the popular economic simulation game in the late 1980s, in which players build up a shipping company and lead it to success through skilful route planning and freight trading. Ports of Call was first released in 1987 for the Amiga, later also for other systems, and quickly became one of the best-known and longest-running titles in the genre and one of the flagship games of German game developers. To this day, the game enjoys cult status among retro fans.

Windows: WavConvert4Amiga 1.4a
The Windows program WavConvert4Amiga is used to optimize audio files in Wave format for use on the Amiga or with tracker music programs. The range of functions includes any sample rate when converting to 8-bit mono format, support for both PAL and NTSC frequencies and note conversion from C-1 to B-3 for ProTracker. Shoot'em up: Demo version of AmiSeaFox
"Amiten Games" has created a conversion of the shoot'em up classic Seafox for the Amiga (video) and has now released a first demo version. Using a submarine, you have to destroy the entire enemy before the torpedoes or fuel run out. The game runs on an Amiga 500 with 512 KB RAM expansion, an Amiga 1200 is recommended.

Hunkster: Amiga and Linux versions
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow has created an Amiga and a Linux version of the program Hunkster by 'RetroNick'. The Amiga version also has a MUI interface.
The program can be used to load media files as hunk files into the Amiga's working memory, also specifically into the chip or fast RAM. When writing C or Pascal programs, their addresses in memory can then be transferred to a variable or an array and used for playback in order to integrate them into the executable file during compilation. The source code of Hunkster is available on GitHub.

Universal PCI driver system: OpenPCI 40.3
After several beta versions, Thomas 'Thor' Richter released the first stable version of his universal PCI driver system "OpenPCI" at the end of March, which supports all known PCI solutions for the Amiga without recourse to the software of the respective manufacturer (amiga-news.de reported). The now released version 40.3 fixes a bug in the PCI preferences which caused the device list not to be searched correctly for suitable devices and thus could cause a crash.

MP3 decoder for AA3000 prototypes: DSP3210MPEG
Thanks to 'Wrangler', an MP3 decoder is now also available for the DSP on the AA3000/A3000+ models that never went into series production: DSP3210MPEG is an implementation of the mpeg.device that uses the DSP for decoding. According to the author, the software currently still has several known errors and limitations, but these may still change: For example, only MP3 files with a maximum bit rate of 96 Kbit/s are currently played.

Winner demo: Dead Ahead by Flex & Ephidrena (68k Inside 2025)
At this year's demoscene party 68k Inside 2025 in Finland (May 23-25), the Amiga demo "Dead Ahead" by the groups Flex and Ephidrena took first place in the Combined Demo Competition. The technically and visually impressive work combines classic 68000 demo aesthetics with modern design elements - a highlight for demoscene enthusiasts. Rloaderro (code), evilryu (shader code), farfar (3D/2D graphics) and heetach (analogue gfx) were responsible for the production. Pawel 'tukinem' Tukatsch had submitted the first entry for the Amiga 40 Tools Jam with "Icon-Made": a simple tool, still under development, which creates standard icons from IFF image files for the Workbench (video, amiga-news.de reported).

Arcade game: Gemdalus released
The aim of Gemdalus (story of origin) is to collect all the gems scattered around a labyrinth. In doing so, however, you are dragging a kind of rubber band behind you that cannot be crossed. However, it is possible to snap the rubber band back to take a different path.
The AMOS game, which can be purchased for five US dollars, requires the AGA chipset and 1.6 MB of chip RAM as well as 320 KB of additional RAM.

AmigaOS 4: SDL 2.32.6 and 3.2.14
The Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) multimedia library is now available for AmigaOS 4 in versions 2.32.6 and 3.2.14.
SDL 3, which was introduced in January of this year as version 3.2, offers an extended programming interface (for the GPU, system dialogs, the file system and webcams, among others) and an extensively revised audio interface compared to its predecessor.

Desktop wiki: MPW 0.1
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow is writing a desktop wiki whose content is written in Markdown. The wiki starts a local web server, which can then be accessed from any web browser (Video). File and image uploads are still causing problems, but the wiki is already usable. For the time being, Sackrow is only providing an AmigaOS 3 build for testing.

Shoot'em Up: final demo for "Rex and the Galactic Plague"
'Rex and the Galactic Plague' is a vertically scrolling shooter developed with the help of the Scorpion Engine. The "final" demo version now released contains three playable levels and shows the current status after the developer had to make quote some changes to make the title playable from Floppy Discs.

Hardware emulators: ARM-native MP3 decoding for A1200NG and A600GS
As Amigakit announces in a post on amigaworld.net, they have released "ArmMP3File.library" that uses native ARM code to decode MP3 files. In addition to the text-based player already available, it is hoped that an MP3 player with a graphical user interface using the library will be released soon.

Tool: png2iff 0.1 for Windows

Sami Vehmaa's dungeon crawler 'Bolminok's Kingdom 2' requires an AGA Amiga with some fast RAM. Programming: Web based m68k assembler editor 6.2.0
ASM-editor is a modern web application for writing, executing and learning M68K assembler code, which uses the SvelteKit framework and the Rust programming language (amiga-news.de reported, source code on GitHub).
The tool now supports not only 68k and x86 assembly language, but also RISC-V and offers assembly courses for learning assembly.

PTWeekender IX: Online party with tracker music and DJ sets
On June 6 and 7, 2025, PTWeekender returns - an online event dedicated to Amiga tracker music and retro DJ culture. On Friday, June 6, the weekend kicks off with a Tracked Music Compo and the so-called Prekender sets. Saturday, June 7, will then be dedicated to the main event with live sets from numerous big names on the scene. Retro soccer game: "Mundialito" (update)
Mundialito, a new retro-style arcade soccer game, is coming soon, and a new preview video has been released. The game, which is reminiscent of similar games from the 1980s, will feature action-packed 1-on-1 duels, power-ups, corners, free kicks, penalty kicks, and ten national teams, each with their own playing style. As things stand, Mundialito will require an Amiga 1200 with 2 MB RAM, can be played alone or in two-player mode, and is set to be published free of charge on itch.io shortly.

Mundialito can now be downloaded free of charge or for a small donation. Any Amiga with 2 MB RAM is required, but an A1200 is recommended for "better performance" - games against a human opponent require the latter configuration anyway. On the A500 Mini a compatibility problem has already been discovered, a separate fix is provided by the developer in the form of the file 'Mundialito_ol.uae.'

AmigaOS 4: User report on the SATA PCI card from Rabbit Hole
In mid-March, George 'walkero' Sokianos published a review of the SATA PCI Hard Card from Rabbit Hole under AmigaOS 4 on IntuitionBase (amiga-news.de reported). This card comes with a 256 GB M.2 SSD, which is already connected and ready for use.
Now Daniel 'trixie' Jedlicka has also decided to use this solution to provide an additional backup hard drive for his AmigaOne X5000 and reports about it in a new blog entry on his Ko-fi website.

Demoparty: Outline 2025 (Ommen/NL, 29.5.-01.6.)
Since 2004, the Outline has been celebrated as a demo party with DJs, live acts and demo competitions and, as every year, takes place on the long weekend around Ascension Day: this year from 29 May to 1 June in Ommen (Netherlands), near the border with Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Started as an Atari party and counterpart to Breakpoint, all platforms are now welcome, as the competitions show: the demo, intro, graphics and music competitions are almost completely open to so-called oldskool and newskool systems, but with a focus on 8-bit computers and PCs.

The PiStorm68k is compatible various models of the Raspberry Pi generations 3 and 4 and contains an integrated WLAN module and a real-time clock as well as a DIP64 slot to accommodate a 68000 processor. MorphOS developer Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek announces his "CellBasics" program in the MorphZone with just one screenshot. Music: "DJ N-4ceR 02" vinyl announced by T.S.A.
The demoscene, retro, and makerspace group T.S.A (The Solaris Agency) has announced the new record "DJ N-4ceR 02 - TSA Friends & Chris Huelsbeck", which is a collaboration between six musicians. The 12" vinyl features tracks by CoRe (Karsten Klewer), AMItac (Andre Klaus Otto), rimmler (Markus Schmidt), Chris Huelsbeck, DJ N-4ceR (Markus Zeller), and Skyrunner_bc (Frank Scheffel). The record is currently in production and will be available from July 2025, but can already be pre-ordered for Euro 39.99.

WHDLoad: Graphical user-interface iGame 2.5.0
iGame is a MUI-based frontend for starting WHDLoad games. George 'walkero' Sokianos has released version 2.4.5 for AmigaOS 2.04 and higher, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS. The new information window provides more information about the selected game/demo, such as the year of release, the company/demo group that released it, the required chipset, etc. To be able to open links in the information with a browser, Urltext.mcc is required for MUI 3.x. Demoparty: Nordlicht 2025 in Bremen, Germany (25.-27.07)
Nordlicht demoparty 2025 will take place from 25 to 27 July at BürgerHaus Obervieland (BGO) in Bremen (Germany). And of course, various competitions will be held again, including in the categories "512 Byte Competition", "GFX Competition (Oldschool)", "ASCII / ANSI Competition", "Gravedigger Competition", "Executable Music Competition" and "Realtime Demo Competition". AmigaOS 4: E-UAE PowerPC JIT 1.1.0
Ten years have passed since Álmos Rajnai released version 1.0.0 of his integration of a just-in-time compiler into the Amiga emulator E-UAE for PowerPC systems (amiga-news.de reported). Crowdfunding: Psygnosis - Games People Play (Volume 1), final day

Wings of Fear: Preview video of the revised version
Feedback to the demo version of his Scorpion Engine game "Wings of Fear" led to a revised version of Roar Tjørhom's shoot'em up. The new version now requires AGA chipset now and 2 MB of Fast RAM.

Video: Board assembly of the Mini-ITX Amiga Denise (Part 1)
In the video at the title link, episode 89 of Tim's Retro Corner shows the first part of the assembly of a Denise board.
Denise is an Amiga 500+ replacement in Mini-ITX format with two Zorro II slots, a 72-pin SIMM for the 2 MB of Chip RAM and connectors for a standard ATX power supply and a PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

Flight simulator: Tie Fighter Simulator
"Tie Fighter Simulator" is a small flight simulator created with AMOS and is intended to be a "nostalgic and light-hearted homage to Star Wars, electronic games of the 1980s and the joy of retro programming".
The project was started in 2021 as a personal exercise to relearn AMOS on the Amiga. The idea for the mini-game (a kind of 1980s electronic LED handheld) was inspired by a scene from Star Wars: Episode IV.

Amiga emulator for the Web: vAmigaWeb 4.1
vAmigaWeb is an Amiga emulator for web browsers or as a progressive web app. The new version is now based on the core of vAmiga 4.1. Amiga emulator: Amiberry 7.0.9 and Amiberry-lite 5.8.9
Amiberry is an Amiga emulator based on the current WinUAE version, while its little brother Amiberry-lite is based on WinUAE 4.4 and is intended for slower hardware - up to the Raspberry Pi 4. Version 7.0.9 of Amiberry is now available, Amiberry-lite has arrived at 5.8.9.

Amiga history: Will the real Joe Pillow please stand up
Almost every Amiga fan will be familiar with "Joe Pillow", be it as a nickname for Dale Luck or with regard to the story that the developers of the Amiga transported a prototype of the computer on an airplane in its own seat due to its sensitivity, which was booked under that name.
Now Dale Luck describes at the title link what Joe Pillow was really all about. In February 1984, on a flight from New Orleans to San Jose, he and RJ Mical had simply kept a seat free for more freedom of movement by creating an additional passenger from his backpack and jacket and a pillow with a face painted on it.
