KATO
We support the attempt of Mr. Grabbe, who suggested a new, useful Amiga hardware. This suggestion isn't new, but after the planless acting of AI, where even 5 years after CBMs bankrupt nothing happened (hardware), nonetheless actual. The big problem, which prevented us from integrating the Amiga into a standarized platform via slot card until now, is the problem with the drivers for plugin cards and on-board hardware. In the opposite to the name owners, who constantly states he doesnt need third party developers, we know that they cant make it on their own. Another problem is the Amiga Community, which can only be filled with enthusiasm for completly illusoric projects. Its not practical to try to compete with SGI, Sony or Apple, which are calculating millions of sold systems. Otherwise homecomputermainboards are classified to be useful enough to use modern RISC CPUs. The result are the well known "impotent" tower solutions. CPU top....envoirement flop. If there should be amiga developers, which dont want just want to tap money, they should use standard hardware. In the first point this would be a usual mainboard (Athlon/AlphaII) or a PPC-mainboard (IBM/MOT). Katodev has access to a bridge, which is used as adapter to use cards, build for 030 Macs, in PCI machines. The license fees should be really low. This would be a basis for a minimal Amiga mainboard without CPU, something a british company was unable to do. Amiga-floppy and sound would be 100 % compatible, the 68k would get emulated, for example via UAE, which is ,with a decent CPU, already fast enough. Everyone who wants cooperate with us, and Mr. Grabbe, should contact us. There are no detailed infos or product-announcements for end-user. (ps)

Show report Pianeta Amiga '99 by Thomas Steiding
Thomas Steiding by Epic-Marketing has attended the show, and summarised his impressions for us:

The third Pianeta Amiga took place in the small "exhibition hall" of the small city Empoli near Florenz. On both days, roughly 2500 Amiga users attended the show. According to officials, there were only 25 visitors less than last year. The nice thing with the Italian show is you can simply sit down on the grass outside of the building, enjoying the sun.
About the exhibitors: These were less than last year. At the Amiga Int. booth, aside from A1200 for special pricing there was Ami-Cola to be enjoyed and fashion trends to be followed (Boing Boxershorts).
Haage & Partner, at the NonSolo Soft booth, mainly presented AmigaOS 3.5. Naturally there was always a lot of people at this booth. The final version is scheduled for release early October.
At the booth of Power Computing, you could purchase accelerator and interface boards. Additionally, the new strategy game Red Mars was presented. A talk with Toni Ilinari revealed that the game Golem was cancelled.
At the joint booth by Epic Marketing and Darkage Software, several games were presented, like VirtualGP, Tales from Heaven and the PPC version of Eat The Whistle. Additinally, the effects software Extreme and the Darkage Developer CD were presented.
Main attraction at Virtual Works was the beta version of Wipeout 2097, which should be in the production by now and available soon. At Innovative (?), the latest Vapor products (Voyager 3.x, Microdot etc.) were available. Additionally, the latest Amiga print magazine Enigma Amiga Life was to be appreciated, appearing in its first issue at the show. The magazine is distributed by Italias largest distributor for computer magazines, however they did not yet know about Collas leaving.
A new innovative product is Amiga IT, an HTML magazine based on CD-ROM. The developers are considering German and English versions. The first issue has many great programs and Quake AddOns, like e.g. Quake Rallye.
In the non-commercial hall, user groups and developer teams met, informing the public about their actions. The game Bubble Heros was on show, an innovative and addictive guessing games bound to be released by Crystal Software. Some demo coders showed what great effects can be done by the aging AGA chips. The hall was under the special motto Meet and Greet.
On Saturday evening, there was a short press conference, with about 500 people attending. Petro Tyschtschenko, obviously exhausted by the ongoings of recent weeks, showed some videos from the Amiga past. He was unable to comment about the future, everything was unclear again, but that's familiar to us Amigians.
Impressive for a German like me was the relaxed atmosphere of the show, perfectly reflecting Italian lifestyle. All in all, a nice experience.
Thomas, many thanks for your report, giving us a good impression of the show. (ps)
