MP3 decoder for AA3000 prototypes: DSP3210MPEG
Thanks to 'Wrangler', an MP3 decoder is now also available for the DSP on the AA3000/A3000+ models that never went into series production: DSP3210MPEG is an implementation of the mpeg.device that uses the DSP for decoding. According to the author, the software currently still has several known errors and limitations, but these may still change: For example, only MP3 files with a maximum bit rate of 96 Kbit/s are currently played. RetroArch port for AmigaOS in progress
Steffen Häuser is working on a port of RetroArch for AmigaOS and AmigaOS 4 - this is a modular emulator system in which only the cores for the different systems are exchanged. After completion, the conversion will be available free of charge in Aminet and OS4Depot, the latter already contains a package with the first cores. He writes (translation) about his port:
"I am currently in the process of porting the modular emulator system RetroArch to AmigaOS. Currently there is already a beta version for AmigaOS 4 and a beta version for AmigaOS 3.x (PiStorm 4 or at least PiStorm recommended). The WarpOS version is unfortunately not yet running, but is also being worked on.
If you don't know RetroArch - it's a modular system where things like video refresh, sound, joystick etc. are done by a central program, and the emulators (like PC-Engine, NeoGeo, NES, Gameboy, ...) then only have to implement the "core". There is a very large field of emulator cores for RetroArch, which can then also be ported relatively easily (some more, some less) to AmigaOS. And you don't have to program video refresh, sound etc. for every emulator from scratch. RetroArch also offers a nice GUI. RetroArch also offers a comfortable GUI for operation.
I offer the current beta version to anyone who sends (for example) 10-15 Euro to my PayPal account (tirionareonwe AT gmail.com) as a donation (in case of a donation, please provide an e-mail address to which the beta version should be sent). The final version will then be published free of charge on OS4Depot and Aminet.
You can also have a look at the video here. (The NeoGeo CD core is not yet included in the video, as it has only been running for a very short time).
There are already a lot of cores, but there is certainly room for improvement.I might want to take a look at a Mame core and possibly also a ScummVM core at some point, once the basic version is ready." (snx)

Module-player: NostalgicPlayer 3.0.0 for Windows
NostalgicPlayer is a tool for playing music files on Windows that supports a wide range of formats, including Amiga-specific file types such as MOD (Protracker, Noisetracker) and MED (OctaMED), as well as modern formats such as MP3 and FLAC. The player was first developed by Thomas Neumann in 1993 on the Amiga, and later continued on BeOS and Windows. NostalgicPlayer requires Windows 10 or 11, .NET Desktop Runtime 9, and, of course, a sound chip or sound card in your PC.
New features and bugfixes in version 3.0.0 of NostalgicPlayer:
- Some Ron Klaren modules did not play correctly, e.g. Battle Squadron.
- Fixed different issues when loading samples in mo3 modules.
- When a module is paused and you change position, the time is updated immediately.
- The Amiga filter implementation has been updated from a simple low-pass filter to a Butterworth filter, so it is now closer to the real Amiga filter.
- Totally rewrite of the internal mixer routines to support multiple channels in both sample files and speaker setup. That means when playing e.g. a 7.1 channel sample file, each channel will be directed to the right speakers. If you do not have all the speakers required, NostalgicPlayer will down-mix the channels and place them in speakers close to the original position. Support from 1 to 14 channels as input and 1 to 7 channels as output + subwoofer channel for both input and output.
- Multiple channel support added for these sample formats: FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, RIFF-WAVE (PCM) and RIFF-WAVE (IEEE).
- Changed the surround option, so you now can select between Dolby Pro Logic and Real channels. Real channels means modules using the surround effect, will be played directly in the rear speakers. So if you have more than 2 speakers, I recommend to set this to Real channels.
- Level meter and Oscilloscope visualizers now supports multiple channels.
- Added a volume normalizer, which will turn down the volume a little bit if overflows are detected when mixing.
- Added support for TFMX-MOD files.
- Updated LibSidPlayFp to version 2.14.0.
- Updated LibXmp to version 4.6.3.
- Added support for ArcFS archive format.
- Added missing module formats in LibXmp: Archimedes Tracker, Astroidea XMF, Coconizer, Digital Symphony, Digital Tracker, Digitrakker, Epic MegaGames MASI, Epic MegaGames MASI 16, Funktracker, Galaxy Music System 4.0, Galaxy Music System 5.0, Liquid Tracker, Liquid Tracker NO, Megatracker, Poly Tracker and Real Tracker.
The NostalgicPlayer is available free of charge, and the source code is also available on GitHub. (nba)

New game engine: Sevgi Engine
Sevgi Engine is a new open source video game engine which provides the required tools and generates the boilerplate code to create high performing Amiga games using only the C programming language (video). It is built around the ScrollingTricks archive by Georg Steger and has the following features:
- All display algorithms aim to perform at a locked 50fps on a single buffered native Amiga chipset display. It implements an optimized version of the algorithm Scroller_XYUnlimited2_64 from ScrollingTricks. Benefits highly from Fast Ram where available.
- System friendly: aims to work on all ROM versions (2.0+) providing a clean quit back to OS without needing WHDLoad.
- AGA Support: supports all features provided by the AGA chipset.
- No limitations: designed to support all the well known visual tricks known by the popular Amiga video game titles while not limiting more experimental effects to be implemented.
- Easy development
A native editor program is provided to generate code, manage game assets, edit color palettes etc. called Sevgi Editor. Other elements like game logic, animation and events require programming knowledge in C. The programming and compiling can be made natively (on the Amiga OS - using native compilers) or cross platfrom (on Windows or Linux PCs - using cross development tools). Sevgi Editor can import game maps made in Tiled.
- Templates: generates ready to compile and run game code from template genres which aims to ease bootstrapping. The templates include test assets.
- ptplayer: implements the great ptplayer by Frank Wille for music and audio effects.
- No third party dependencies: the game executable will not require any libraries
- Documentation: the engine code is very well commented and documented in detail in Amigaguide format.
An ECS or AGA Amiga, Kickstart 2.0+ and MUI 3.8 (for Sevgi Editor) are required. We asked the author İbrahim Alper Sönmez how this project came about:
Amiga-News (AN): We have been reporting on two game construction kits for some time now: RedPill and die Scorpion Engine. Did you know about the other game engines?
Alper Sönmez (AS): Yes I did know about RedPill and Scropion Engine. I never tried them though. I follow both of them from websites like yours, their facebook pages and youtube channels and I really appreciate what they’ve achieved so far.
AN: Did you miss anything?
AS: The first thing I miss in the engines mentioned is the unavailability of a clean quit back to OS. I try to use AmigaOS to the fullest, so I download the new games on the AmigaOS using IBrowse, unpack them and copy them to some proper drawer. But when I run them and not be able to quit back to OS, I get pretty annoyed. Another feature I miss in the games made on those other engines is the engine not being able to fade in/out the copper gradients (the color gradients used as background sky). I spent particular time on these two while developing Sevgi_Engine.
AN: What was the reason for developing your game engine?
AS: It was mostly educational and experimental. I've always been curious about how Amiga games were made. I’ve read so many different implementation ideas from various developers on forums and always had thought experiments inside my head for a while about what would be the best combination of these ideas to have the best performing game engine for the Amiga. I was familiar with Amos (which is very convenient, yet quite limiting on many aspects) and experimented with some ideas on that initially. One day I’ve decided to write something from scratch in C implementing all my ideas without encountering the limitations caused by the infrastructure of Amos. The most essential one among those ideas was one of the screen scroll routines demonstrated in Scrolling Tricks by Georg Steger which was also written in C. So I’ve downloaded his source code from Aminet and started implementing my version of the routine. When I saw it perform amazingly well I decided that there would be something of great value if I could turn this into a fully fledged game engine. And so the Sevgi_Engine project started.
AN: Is it even possible to compare your engine with the other two?
AS: It is hard to make an easy comparison because of the differences in the target groups. But I can say that Sevgi_Engine is more a "boilerplate C code generator" than a "game construction kit". But of course it has an editor to help with the management of game assets and engine features. But for a comparison on the games to be created with them, I can tell that Sevgi_Engine can outperform them both on being system friendly. Another important difference is that it is open source. It is amazing that some developers have already started contributing on GitHub.
AN: What is the target group? Everyone? Or rather developers/programmers?
AS: Sevgi_Engine requires great knowledge of Amiga hardware programming and C language. So the target group is C developers invested in programming Amiga hardware and AmigaOS friendly code.
AN: Is it more/better suited to a certain type of game?
AS: It is more suited to make high performing games that work on native Amiga display, like namely Turrican, Lionheart, Fire and Ice, Superfrog, Alien Breed etc. with an important caveat: Sevgi_Engine aims to perform as well as these games but on a single buffered display. Which means there will be more chip memory available for sound and graphics assets. (dr)

Anniversary: Amigaland.de turns 25
On amigaland.de, Mirko Engelhardt makes formerly commercial software available for download with permission. He can now look back on a quarter of a century and writes (translation):
"The time has come. Amigaland.de is 25 years old, what an achievement and not expected at the time. Honestly, who would have thought 25 years ago that the Amiga community would still be so lively? I certainly didn't, but everything turned out differently and is now as it is.
Our site is celebrating its anniversary this year. Our site saw the light of day 25 years ago and has continued to develop steadily. Before that, we were active in the mailbox scene. We were also successful with the Nevermind BBS (1994 - 2001). Then I pulled the plug and sold all my Amiga hardware. (A serious mistake!) Through Amigaland, however, I tried to maintain my affinity to the Amiga. Today we are quite well established, we can offer many downloads, have many stories to tell and offer help in various areas. Our site has been redesigned four times so far, but I liked our second version the best. :)
Today we celebrate the day, we currently offer the most downloads for the Amiga on our site that we have ever had. Plus apps, demos, tutorials and our extensive history section. We are currently supporting the Amiga40 as a sponsor and are giving away two tickets to this event until May 31, 2025. Have fun at Amigaland!" (snx)

Preview video: Shoot'em Up "Echo Fighter" (6)
With the sixth preview video of its shoot'em up "Echo Fighter" (amiga-news.de reported), 'pixelplop' shows the progress made recently: the player is now greeted with a scaling "Wave" and "Get Ready" text at the start of the level. The inertia of the ship's movement has been added and the power-ups are now mostly functional, although more are planned.
As the developer writes, he is still in the process of writing the game code, which means that he is not yet really focussing on the gameplay or the enemy waves. There are still many things planned to be added into the game. (dr)

PPC hardware: MorphOS successfully boots on the "Mirari" motherboard
Three weeks ago, the PPC-based motherboard "Mirari", developed by Harald 'Geennaam' Kanning, was presented to the public for the first time. According to our information, the MorphOS team contacted the Mirari team for the first time right after this announcement and received one of the few prototypes produced to date.
As announced today on the project's website - along with photos showing the Ambient desktop booting on Mirari - MorphOS is already running on the Mirari hardware. There is no information yet on the exact status of the port, but the
board designers thank MorphOS team member Frank Mariak for his "relentless hard work and unwavering dedication" that made this result possible. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Retro soccer game: "Mundialito" (update)
Mundialito, a new retro-style arcade soccer game, is coming soon, and a new preview video has been released. The game, which is reminiscent of similar games from the 1980s, will feature action-packed 1-on-1 duels, power-ups, corners, free kicks, penalty kicks, and ten national teams, each with their own playing style. As things stand, Mundialito will require an Amiga 1200 with 2 MB RAM, can be played alone or in two-player mode, and is set to be published free of charge on itch.io shortly.
Update: (22.05.2025, 22:15, cg)
Mundialito can now be downloaded free of charge or for a small donation. Any Amiga with 2 MB RAM is required, but an A1200 is recommended for "better performance" - games against a human opponent require the latter configuration anyway. On the A500 Mini a compatibility problem has already been discovered, a separate fix is provided by the developer in the form of the file 'Mundialito_ol.uae.' (nba)

Amiga 40 Tools Jam: GoSnap V0.15 (update)
The second entry for the Amiga 40 Tools Jam was submitted by Krzysztof Donat: GoSnap enables the function known from other operating systems for snapping windows to the edges of the screen (video).
GoSnap creates 8 active zones on the Workbench screen: 4 screen corners and 4 edges. When a window is dragged to one of these zones, it is automatically resized and repositioned.
The zones work as follows:
- 4 corners - dragging a window into a corner will resize it to 1/4 of the screen size and position it in that corner.
- Left, right, and bottom edges - dragging a window to one of these edges will resize it to 1/2 of the screen size and snap it to the corresponding edge.
- Top edge - dragging a window to the top edge of the screen will maximize it to fill the entire screen.
GoSnap respects the minimum and maximum window sizes defined by the application's developer, as well as whether a window is resizable at all. If a window is not resizable, GoSnap will only reposition it without changing its size.
The program runs as a commodity and can be managed through the system Exchange utility, where it can be paused or disabled.
The program requires AmigaOS version 3.1.4 or newer, AmigaOS 3.2 is recommended.
In the system preferences (IControl), the option to allow windows to be dragged beyond the screen edge should be enabled.
GoSnap should also work under AmigaOS 4.1.
GoSnap was written in Amiga E using the E-VO compiler and is freeware. However, donations are welcome.
Update: (23.05.2025, 22:15, dr)
Version 0.15 is now available, which among other things fixes the snapping non-resizable windows. (dr)

Amiga 40 Tools Jam: Icon-Made v0.8
Pawel 'tukinem' Tukatsch has submitted the first entry for the Amiga 40 Tools Jam with "Icon-Made": a simple tool, still under development, that creates standard icons from IFF image files for the Workbench (video).
If a single IFF file is loaded, the program creates an icon with one image. If two IFF files are loaded, the tool creates an icon with two images that change as soon as you click on the icon. Further features:
- NTSC compatible
- Preview function
- Creation of DISK, DRAWER, TOOL, PROJECT and Trashcan icons
- IFF images with a maximum of 256 colours and a resolution of 640x200 can be loaded, whereby only the first 2 bitplanes (4 colours) are ever read
- If the ".info" extension is forgotten to be added during saving, the program recognises it and adds it itself
- Support for 8-colour MagicWB icons

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.51
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.10.1, which allows the development of games from various genres (e.g. Agonman). RedPill is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM. Jens 'Farbfinsternis' Henschel has written a tutorial.
Numerous optimisations have been made in the new version 0.9.51 to make games run faster. All changes in detail:
- Multiple optimizations, overall the games should be at least 15% faster.
- Collision and scrolling code has been optimized.
- Code for processing objects in sleep status has been optimized.
- Values and bar in the HUD now can be interpolated for smoother transitions
instead of the new value immediatly being displayed.
- HUD Bars will change color when there is a change in the value.
- Improvement when using Show Text/Dialog to have a smoother change of screens.
- Now the latest edited level is saved, when loading a project it will load
this last editted level.
- In the editor, now better colors from the palette will be picked for the UI,
improving readibility.
- In profiler screen besides the maximum number of objects processed now you
can see the maximum number of awaken objects processed.
- Added the project ObjPerfTest to check performance of collisions and physics.
- Sub-pixel scrolling was not activated by default in new projects, not it is.
- Fix when custom font is used in the HUD.
- Fix for dialogs when vertical scroll was used.
- Fix for games using Tile border in the tilesets.
- Fix for glitches appearing when screen changes.

AROS distribution: AROS One portable 2.8 (x86)
In addition to the AROS distribution "AROS One" for x86 computers, which is available as a DVD ISO file or USB flash ("VHD") image (amiga-news.de reported), there is now a separate portable version for USB sticks (video), which contains AROS ONE 2.8 (32-bit) and can be run directly from it. This project was created for users who want to explore AROS without having to install it on a hard drive or for users who want to use AROS on their existing hardware instead of investing in dedicated other hardware.
System requirements:
- (reasonably) up-to-date x86-64 (64-bit) computer hardware
- USB 3.0 support
- Screen resolution 1920 x 1080

Demoparty: Outline 2025 (Ommen/NL, 29.5.-01.6.)
Since 2004, the Outline has been celebrated as a demo party with DJs, live acts and demo competitions and, as every year, takes place on the long weekend around Ascension Day: this year from 29 May to 1 June in Ommen (Netherlands), near the border with Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Started as an Atari party and counterpart to Breakpoint, all platforms are now welcome, as the competitions show: the demo, intro, graphics and music competitions are almost completely open to so-called oldskool and newskool systems, but with a focus on 8-bit computers and PCs. (dr)

Gail Wellington passed away
On Thursday Gail Wellington passed away at the age of 85. Born on January 14, 1940 in Yonkers, New York, she was one of Commodore International's best-known personalities through her work as head of the "Commodore Applications and Technical Support" (CATS) department, which was founded for her, and her involvement in the Amiga CDTV.
Her career in this field began in 1981 at Commodore UK, as a technical writer - starting with a manual about writing software manuals for external developers of programs for the Commodore PET - where she eventually became head of the software department. Three years later at Commodore Electronics Ltd, she took over software sales to and support for the independent distributors.
In spring of 1985, at the CeBIT computer exposition in Hanover, Germany, her supervisor, Bob Gleadow, asked her to travel to Los Gatos for three weeks to work with the Amiga developers whose company Commodore had bought in August. This turned into three months in which Gail Wellington mediated between the West Coast and Commodore's marketing department on the East Coast of the USA and kept the management up to date on progress and costs. During this time she was also involved in the planning and coordination of the official launch of the Amiga at Lincoln Center in New York on July 23rd, a major event with Andy Warhol and Debbie Harry, which, like many others, required her to work 7-day weeks and travel extensively.
Back in England at Commodore Electronics, she took charge of marketing and recruiting developers for the Amiga, which led to her return to the USA in October 1986 and appointment as worldwide Amiga Product Manager and in 1987 head of CATS, where she oversaw all worldwide developer activities, managed the Amiga DevCon events and ensured the successful sale of Commodore's products by ensuring the availability of high quality third party application software and hardware. CATS consisted of technical, administrative and marketing staff.
These assignments ended with Mehdi Ali's presidency of Commodore International, who made her Director of Special Projects. The first special project was the development and launch of the Amiga CDTV, code-named "Gail's Baby". Gail Wellington and her team oversaw the software side, while Don Gilbreath and his team were responsible for the hardware side. Her tasks included bringing software developers on board and conducting product demonstrations. However, the CDTV was not a commercial success and Gail Wellington was dismissed in 1992.
After a brief stint as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at OptImage Interactive Services, which was involved with Philips' CD-i, she ended up working full-time at "Three Peas in a Pod Florist" in Pennsylvania, which she had previously purchased with her daughter. (snx)

It is possible to specify which Workbench windows and programs should use which of the screens. The current version 2.4 now also offers improved compatibility with AmigaOS 4.1.
This means that it is now possible to use the full range of functions, including the GoVD-conf configuration program, under this operating system without any restrictions in terms of options and stability.
GoVD includes the following features:
- Up to eight independent virtual screens
- Freely positionable panel for switching between screens
- Keyboard shortcut support for quick screen switching and hiding
- Integration with the Exchange Commodity
GoVD is shareware and can be used unregistered for 20 minutes at a time. Registration is based on voluntary donations, developers of Aminet-listed programs can apply for free registration. (snx)

Tool: identify library 45.0 now recognizes PCI cards
Richard “Shred” Körber's identify.library collects all kinds of system parameters and provides the user with information on CPU, FPU, memory, clock frequency, etc., for example. Version 45.0 includes support for PCI cards for the first time. The author explains the new features in this release as follows:
"In order to recognise PCI boards, the openpci.library by Thomas Richter must be installed. In addition, the database file "pci.db" from the new IdentifyPci package must be copied into the S: directory. The database is based on the work of The PCI ID Repository, but has been shrunk to a manageable floppy disc size. (I decided against using their "pci.ids" for reasons of space and performance).
The query is performed using the new IdPciExpansion() function, which works in a relatively similar way to IdExpansion() for the Zorro extensions. The supplied ListExp tool already uses the function, other tools must be extended.
PCI detection is still in the beta phase. I look forward to your feedback!
Another new feature is the category of "virtual extensions", which are not recognised at boot time but are added later. The openpci.library creates several such virtual extensions per PCI card, which quickly makes the list of Zorro extensions confusing. ListExp now only shows these extensions as a total ("+ 16 virtual extensions"). With the new VIRTUAL option, however, they can still be displayed as normal in the list.
What else? The new AmiGUS sound card is recognised. The new tag IDTAG_EmptyIfUnknown now returns an empty string for unknown manufacturers and boards (instead of the numeric ID). And I threw a few small errors out of the include files, one of them even dates back to the very early Amiga days. :D
As always, the release is already available at Codeberg or on AmiNet." (cg)

Preview video: Arcade game "Gemdalus"
RETREAM is about to create "Gemdalus" (video), an arcade game in which the player has to collect all the gems scattered around the labyrinths. Inspired by Snake, the player leaves behind a kind of band of light when collecting gems, which he himself is not allowed to break through. However, like a stretched rubber band, it is possible to snap back. (dr)

Managing ADF files: adflib V0.10.2 for Windows, Linux and macOS
Laurent Clevy first released adflib in 1999 in version 0.7.8 (Aminet). The portable C library, written mainly in C, is used to manage Amiga-formatted devices such as hard disks and ZIP disks or to swap them out via the .ADF format (amiga-news.de reported). The library is currently being developed under the responsibility of Tomasz Wolak. Changes in version 0.10.2:
- unadf: fix extracting tree for read-only directories
It is also pointed out with regard to the Windows binaries that these apparently had unexpected dependencies on debug versions of the Visual Studio runtime DLLs, which are missing on normal Windows (without Visual Studio installed). The current version should be free of this problem, but could not be tested in advance. If anyone has the possibility to verify this, please report it in the corresponding issue of the GitHub repository. (dr)

MorphOS: CellBasics announced (update)
MorphOS developer Jacek 'jacadcaps' Piszczek announces his "CellBasics" program in the MorphZone with just one screenshot. The screenshot shows the entry of addresses as in a simple database, but the name and the appearance are more reminiscent of a spreadsheet. Apparently, rows and columns can already be inserted or deleted at the current stage of development, and CSV is used as the storage format.
Update: (16:55, 14.05.25, snx)
As Jacek Piszczek has since explained, the standard Excel syntax has already been implemented, but the common functions still need to be programmed. Standard mathematical operations or referencing other cells or cell ranges do already work, though. CellBasics is an almost completely self-written program, only the formula parser and the routines for loading xlsx files would be ports of open source libraries. (snx)

In memoriam: Manfred Kleimann, ASM editor-in-chief, has passed away
The German computer games industry mourns the passing of Manfred Kleimann, who died on April 13, 2025, at the age of 69. As the creative mind behind the magazine "ASM – Aktueller Software Markt", he is considered one of the pioneers of German games journalism.
Originally coming from the field of urban and landscape planning, Kleimann discovered his enthusiasm for language, media, and technology early on. In the mid-1980s, he recognized the potential of the still young medium of computer games and developed ASM, one of the first magazines aimed not only at programmers but explicitly at gamers, with its own stylistic devices, sections, and unmistakable tone.
From 1986 to 1991, he shaped the profile of the magazine published by Tronic Verlag as its editor-in-chief – and thus also the self-image of a growing gaming community. Kleimann knew how to combine technical fascination, editorial curiosity, and linguistic ease – a style that set a precedent and paved the way for later magazines such as Power Play and Amiga Joker.
He remained connected to the industry even after his time at ASM, working as a product manager at Konami, as a freelance editor, and later as a translator and proofreader.
Manfred "Manni" Kleimann was not a loud representative of the scene, but he was an influential one. His keen sense for topics, his editorial style, and his courage to think up new formats leave a lasting impression.
An online condolence book has been set up in memory of Manfred Kleimann. (nba)

Flight simulator: Tie Fighter Simulator
"Tie Fighter Simulator" is a small flight simulator created with AMOS and is intended to be a "nostalgic and light-hearted homage to Star Wars, electronic games of the 1980s and the joy of retro programming".
The project was started in 2021 as a personal exercise to relearn AMOS on the Amiga. The idea for the mini-game (a kind of 1980s electronic LED handheld) was inspired by a scene from Star Wars: Episode IV. (dr)

Amiga history: Will the real Joe Pillow please stand up
Almost every Amiga fan will be familiar with "Joe Pillow", be it as a nickname for Dale Luck or with regard to the story that the developers of the Amiga transported a prototype of the computer on an airplane in its own seat due to its sensitivity, which was booked under that name.
Now Dale Luck describes at the title link what Joe Pillow was really all about. In February 1984, on a flight from New Orleans to San Jose, he and RJ Mical had simply kept a seat free for more freedom of movement by creating an additional passenger from his backpack and jacket and a pillow with a face painted on it. SCALA-MM game conversion: The Angel of Death 1.0
At the end of November, 'Quantum Code Monk' released a first pre-release version of its Scala MM game conversion "The Angel of Death" for AmiGameJam 2024, which is based on Police Quest: In Pursuit Of The Death Angel, a game released by Sierra in 1987. As Jessie Bains, you try to take control of the drug trade in the town of Lytton.
The graphics have been reworked and are heavily inspired by the original game. A few side quests, a points management system and a very simple luck mini-game have also been added.
AmigaOS 3.x as well as Scala or the Scala Player are required. Also 4 MB RAM and a minimum resolution of 640x512. (dr)

Emulator: Mame106Minimix 1.3
The Multi Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) emulates numerous arcade machines. After conversions for MorphOS and AmigaOS 4 as well as various, mostly older 68k ports, there has been another project for AmigaOS 3.1 since last year with Mame106Minimix, which however requires a very fast computer (68060 processor with 64 MB or actually designed for PiStorm extensions).
The port of MAME version 0.106, which dates back to 2006, is now available in version 1.3 and offers further corrections regarding the AGA and OCS native modes and the emulation of various games. (snx)

New PPC hardware announced: "Mirari" featuring USB3, NVME, FPGA (Update 3)
Dave "Skateman" Koelman presented a new PPC motherboard developed by Harald 'Geennaam' Kanning in the "Hardware" channel of the Amigans Discord server. Some time later, Kanning himself started posting in our comments section and supplied
a pretty extensive overview over the project:
The full specifications of the current design look like this:
- Form Factor: micro-ATX compatible, 244x170mm (L x W)
- T10x2 (2-4 e5500 cores) up to 1.5GHz / T2081 (4 dual-threaded e6500 cores with Altivec 2.0) up to 1.8GHz
- DDR3L (1.35V) SODIMM with rank interleaving (T10x2 up to DDR1600; T2081 up to DDR2133)
- PCIe x16 slot with 4 lanes occupied (PCIe 2.0)
- PCIe x4 slot with one lane occupied (T10x2 PCIe 2.0; T2081 PCIe 3.0)
- PCIe x1 slot with one lane occupied (PCIe 2.0)
- 2x SATA 2.0 (T10x2 only, at 300Mbit/s)
- 2x NVMe slots (second slot mutually exclusive with second SATA port)
- 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 connected to the rear I/O; 4 connected to internal USB 2.0 headers)
- 4 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (2 connected to the rear I/O; 2 connected to an internal USB 3.0 header)
- 10/100/1000 Mbit Ethernet
- 192kHz/24bit analog audio (mic, line-in, line-out to the rear I/O; mic, headphone to the HD audio connector)
- S/PDIF / Toslink digital audio out
- 9-pin RS232 to the rear I/O
- Micro SD card (push-in push-out) as boot source
- 24-pin ATX power connector
- 4-pin ATX CPU power connector
- CPU fan header with PWM
- Case fan header
- TRION FPGA
Background and Mission
The Mirari board is designed with the intention to provide the Amiga
community with low-cost PowerPC hardware. Therefore, the design is based on a
bare minimum with nice-to-haves based on what makes sense, but always with
the mission in mind. Due to the minor cost difference between a dual-core
T1022 and the quad-core T1042, we've decided on the T1042, resulting in a
low-cost board with mid-range specifications.
The T10x2 is based on the e5500 core, the same core found in the X5000.
Initial benchmarks confirm that the single-core performance difference is
just the clock difference, with a 1.4 GHz T1042 performing at 70% of the 2GHz
X5020. The design also accommodates the pin and footprint-compatible T2081,
allowing for a mid-cost board with high-end specifications. To ensure
compatibility, we had to make some compromises to the T10x2 design.
Memory Support
The T10x2 memory controller supports both 64-bit DDR3L and DDR4 at 800 MHz (DDR1600).
The T2081 memory controller supports both 64-bit DDR3L at 933MHz (DDR1866) and DDR3 at 1066MHz (DDR2133).
The common denominator is DDR3L, hence the choice for a 1.35V SODIMM slot.
If we had focused solely on the T1042, DDR4 would have been the better choice from an availability standpoint. However, since the clock speed is the same but latencies are larger for DDR4, the overall memory performance would have been lower.
For the T2081 we can increase the memory controller voltage to 1.5V which would enable the DDR2133 interface speed.
Although we have only one memory controller, initial Linux benchmarks show that the single and SMT memory performance is at least on par with the X5020.
Audio
For longevity reasons, we've decided to use an industrial-grade audio codec from TI (TLV320AIC3204). This codec is routed to three audio jacks at the rear (mic, line-in, line-out) and to an onboard HD audio connector. Additionally, there's a digital optical output (Toslink). The T1042 features an I2S interface for direct connection to external audio codecs, while the T208x does not. Therefore, we've implemented the I2S and S/PDIF controllers in the FPGA. This means there's no audio driver readily available for Linux. For OS4 and MorphOS, I have experience writing AHI drivers, so consider this covered.
Storage
The mainboard features two SATA ports and two NVMe slots. However, we had to make some tough choices again:
For the T1042 variant, there's always one SATA port and one NVMe slot available. The second SATA/NVMe is mutually exclusive, currently jumper-based but eventually u-boot configurable.
The T2081 does not have SATA interfaces. If you need SATA, it must be added with a PCIe card. However, keep in mind that SATA is being phased out, with modern PCs and laptops often using NVMe over SATA SSDs.
Tested Linux distributions are all booting and running from NVMe. I also have experience with NVMe drivers, so consider this covered for OS4 and MorphOS as well.
USB3: We based u-boot on the latest stable version available earlier this year, 2024.10. This has many benefits over using the 2014-2018 versions available in other PowerPC hardware. However, the developers behind u-boot changed the driver model around 2018, with a transition period ending in 2020. This means u-boot is a mixture of old drivers and drivers compliant with the new model. For USB on NXP SoC, there's a catch: NXP didn't rewrite their OHCI and EHCI drivers for the new model. Activating the XHCI driver for USB3 support causes conflicts. Fortunately, this is not an issue under Linux, so USB3 works correctly, but we have work to do for u-boot.
Prototypes
We have ordered 5 prototypes and managed to make them all work (100% yield). This was a great concern to me personally, as the layout requirements for the 780 balls FPGA stretched our supplier's capabilities to its limits. The boards run stably and have undergone hours of burn-in testing with Linux stress testing tools. One observation is that the CPUs run around 30°C idle and around 40°C under full load, which is good for overclocking potential. The core power supply has quite some headroom to support this. You can check out the Hyperion Entertainment X5000 Linux-only forum for posts from Skateman. Whenever he talks about his 4-core e5500, he is actually talking about this board.
Update: (30.04.2025, 23:20, cg)
The hardware designer made some additional statements in a Discord channel only accessible to registered users (Official Commodore Amiga, #next-gen):
- "Board is fully functional. So runs all available PPC Linux distro's (including the latest Chimera). This one is T1042 based for cost reasons.
So 4x e5500 cores. But the board is fully compatible with the 8 threaded e6500 based T2081. Other things to highlight are 2x NVMe (Linux boots
and runs from NVMe) and USB3.2 Gen1".
- "Target for the T1042 based version is to be the lowest cost mainboard PPC board on sale."
- "Target is to run both OS4 and MorphOS. But this is not up to us of course. We can do so much what we can control. And that is the hardware
including u-boot. If those in control of OS4 ultimately do not want to cooperate than at least we had the fun. And proved that low cost PPC
hardware is possible."
- "The T1042 supports either 1.35V DDR3L or DDR4. The T2081 supports either 1.5V DDR3 or 1.35V DDR3L. Hence the choice for a 1.35V sodimm.
For the T2081 I could opt for 1.5V DDR3. Then it can be clocked up to DDR-2133"
Update 2: (01.05.2025, 13:15, cg):
Board designer Harald 'Geennaam' Kanning has posted an extensive description of the project in our comments section.
Update 3: (01.05.2025, 15:39, cg):

Worth a read: Thomas Rattigan, short-lived Commodore CEO
American journalist and author David L. Farquhar regularly writes about computer and IT history on his website "The Silicon Underground". In a recent article, he outlines the short but eventful tenure of Thomas Rattigan as CEO of Commodore. Rattigan was lured away from Pepsi to Commodore in 1985 and initially took on the role of COO. He is credited with initiating the successful A500 and A2000 models and returning the company to profitability.
On 23 April 1987, just over a year after being appointed CEO of Commodore (on 1 April 1986), Thomas Rattigan had his abrupt end at Commodore – he was dismissed by Irving Gould and escorted out of the building by security guards without being given the opportunity to take any personal belongings with him.
Farquhar recounts the background to this spectacular episode in Commodore's company history and shows how Rattigan ended up having the last laugh. (nba)

Amiga Games That Weren't: Alien Olympics
Alien Olympics was a sports game planned by Mindscape for 1994 for the Amiga (OCS, 1 MB) and the CD32. Although it was never released, the website "Games That Weren't" has now discovered an early version of the game that is about 30% complete and made it runnable. The game, which was converted to Amiga by Mark Greenshields, is reminiscent of Track & Field, but with eight unique alien characters and humorous disciplines. (nba)
