WookieChat 1.3 Beta Released
The IRC program WookieChat has now reached version 1.3, this one is also functional under the OS4 update. WookieChat is a 68k program that also runs under AmigaOS4 and MorphOS.
The new version is not as stable as its predecessor, but since the author is going to spend some time out of the country, he wanted to get this out to the users so they could get an idea of the current development. Users of the current AmigaOS4-Version are advised to click "ignore error" when the Grim Reaper window appears.
A few of the changes:
- Bug elimination: After a /kick the nickname is stricken from the list of those present
- Use of dos.library for data concepts
- A server may be contacted with a double click on its name
- New pop-up menus for the name list
- Keyboard shortcuts implemented
- When a nickname changes in the channel it is also changed in private conversation windows
- The /away command now works right
- "Assign wookiechat:" is not needed anymore

Hardware hack: CD-ROM, HD and disk drive in an A1200 case
Update (26.10.2012, cg): Integrated article into the news item during database migration)
After seeing what Egon Kohlschütter had done to his Amiga 1200, Bob Wicksall decided that there
was a way to make an internal CD-ROM blend better with the original A1200 case. Egon goes into better detail on some of the
technical aspects of the hack so make sure you have a look at his report aswell. Here's what Bob's
version looks like:
The following is a detailed report from Bob, describing how he managed to fit everything (including the disk drive) into the A1200 desktop case.
Feel free to email any questions about this hack to rwicksall@rochester.rr.com.
First things first
I was able to find a spare TEAC CD-224E in an old Gateway desktop PC. I've also seen several of them on ebay. Just search for
Teac and slimline and you probably find a hit. The next step was to open the case and remove the top half of the RF Shield. After this was done I took my CD-ROM and started to eyeball the new location. I found that I could move the harddrive and place the CD-Rom in the back left corner of the case. All I would have to do is build a mount and cut a hole in the case.
The next thing you need to acquire is an adapter to connect the Mini-IDE connector on the
CD-Rom to a standard IDE cable. Again, you can find these on Ebay most of the time. Here is a picture:
Cutting and Mounting
Cutting the hole was a little tricky. Basically I put the top of the case on a table upside down and then placed the CD-ROM snug in the corner
so that I could trace the outline. This told me exactly where I wanted the hole to go. I then measured the location and transferred the outline to the outside of the case. I'm never too sure of my measuring ability so I drilled a fine pilot hole in each of the corners. Once I was sure
I had the outline as accurate as possible I started cutting the hole with a Dremel. The hole was finished with a nice wide file to straighten out the lines.
Mounting the CD-ROM drive was next. The mount was made up of three pieces that I cut out an old plastic hard drive case. The first piece is Z shaped, about 5 inches long and supports the weight of the drive. This piece runs down the middle of the drive, is attached to the back of the case and the other end rests on the motherboard. The second piece is a leg glued to the upper left of the case to support and level the drive. The third piece is simply a stop on the right of the drive to prevent it from moving when ejecting the disk. When the case is open the drive just floats loose but as soon as you close the case it is held in firmly. Here is what it looks like from behind:
Note: The mounts are supporting the case of the drive. They are not touching the door.
Note2: The Z mount is removable. It is held into place by three scraps of plactic glued to the 1200 case.
Moving the harddrive to its new position
I didn't want to lose the internal floppy and I was lucky enough to recover an old 4GB 2.5" harddrive from an old laptop. The Hardrive mount is made up of two pieces of sheet steel. The first is simple an L bracket bolted to the back of the case with two screw holes for the drive. The second piece is basically a hook with a screw hole. This uses the keyboard tray to support the other side of the drive. This of course means you have to unscrew the drive to remove the keyboard.
Note: The harddrive is just resting on it's mount. I had to remove the screws to remove the keyboard.
And from behind:
IDE Cables and Power
I attacked the power harness first. I had already built a replacement power supply from an ATX power supply so I didn't have to worry about the load. I hacked some connectors from an old PC and built a power harness to fit the location of the drives. The power is pulled from the floppy connector on the motherboard and split off to the floppy and the CD-ROM.
I could have folded the IDE cables but I found they were too bulky and I was already afraid of having heat problems in the case. I ended up splitting the cables by hand. It was actually easier than I could have imagined. I used a sharp knife to cut a small hole between each wire and then I carefully pulled each wire free.
I used an Elbox Fast ATA 1200 IDE adapter to get the extra IDE connections. I bought it new from Software Hut for the project and I couldn't be happier. Just stay away from the IDE splitters that stand virtically from the IDE connector on the motherboard. They don't fit under the drive.
As you can see from the picture the CD-ROM comes very close to resting on the IDE adapter. I had to actually bend the pins on the circuit board to make room and then insulate the bottom of the drive with electrical tape.
Closing it all Up
The first thing is to place the keyboard. It slides in without a problem. The harddrive can then be screwed into place:
The case is actually very easy to close. You simply hinge it down from the back:
The finished product:
Further notes
I'm a little concerned about heat but so far I haven't had a problem. I've left it running for several hours with no issues. I don't really like the idea of installing a noisy fan so I'll probably leave things alone for now.
Make sure you give the drive opening plenty of room. If the hole is too small the drive will bind up when you are trying to eject the disk.
I would like to add some additional things like a flicker fixer but my choice of IDE adapters has limited my space. I think with a smaller IDE adapter you could probably fit a PPC card and a Bvision video card. Since I will probably never be able to get my hands on one it's not an issue for me. This IDE connector does give access to the clock port so a future USB adapter is a possibility. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Luciferin flashrom software update to version 1.7
Dear customers of the flashrom solutions of E3B,
E3B and Chris Hodges are pleased to announce the availability of a new
version of the Luciferin software for the Highway+Romulus, Algor and Algor
Pro flashrom equipped hardware. This new release can be downloaded following the link in the title.
It includes the following changes (V1.5 -> V1.7):
- Luciferin will not ask, if the reset vectors should be cleared after the
contents of the flashrom have been updated. This is to avoid having to
turn the machine off and on again when using the Permanent boot loader.
- There is also a menu item for clearing the reset vectors now.
- The AlgorKick program now also supports uncompressed Kickstart images
for users of the 1MB flashrom version Algor PRO.
- The boot loaders have been updated to detect the AlgorKick module and
call it directly, saving one reboot cycle.
The update has been made public, not only for the users that forgot to
register their hardware, but also for other potential customers to try the
software.
All users are invited to try out Luciferin (which was rated as superior to
all other flashrom solutions on the market), even if they do not own the
required hardware. Luciferin will operate in Demo mode then -- only the
actual flashing operation is blocked for obvious reasons.
Also, the comprehensive manual will give much insight on the flashrom
topic, and how it can make your life easier.
There haven't been any user requests in the last months, so we suppose that
the software can be assumed to be in a final state. Anyway, we hope that
you will enjoy this update as much as you did before. Thanks have to go to
the users for their support! (snx)

FreeWheel ver. 2.2
- added full support for the 5th mouse button.
FreeWheel 2.2 is available for download at the official FreeWheel page.
About Cocolino:
The COCOLINO PS/2 Mouse Interface is a microprocessor-based adapter for attaching PS/2 mice, trackballs, glidepoints and radio-controlled mice from the world of PC computers. COCOLINO can work with all models of Amiga computers. It simply plugs into the Amiga's mouse port. The COCOLINO PS/2 Mouse Interface is a full 'plug and play' device. No software is required for standard use. The enclosed software allows using two wheels and 3rd, 4th and 5th buttons available in many PS/2 mice and trackballs. The COCOLINO interface starts working simultaneous with the computer's start so mice can be used in the early-startup-menu (unlike the mice connected through the serial port). COCOLINO uses linear movement interpolation, which makes mouse movements perfectly smooth with any screen frame rates.
Info on the current versions is available in the DOWNLOADS | Cocolino section.
Update: (09.10.2004, 17:15, cg)
Until October 24, a special promotion bundle is available, containing the following items:
- 2 wheel & 5 button 4D Optical Mouse

MorphOS: Software News Summary
The current versions of the following programs have been compiled for MorphOS by Matthias Münch:
Likewise, there's a new port of the current BitlBee version (0.91), also from Matthias Münch. BitlBee unites multiple instant messaging services as well as the IRC protocol, whereby ICQ, AIM, Jabber and Yahoo contacts may be called up from an IRC program. The MorphOS version is at a beta stage, so feedback and bugreports are wanted, especially from MSN and Yahoo users.
Also an update of the Keymap Editor Keymorpher (71 KB) by Vladimir Javorski, has reached version 0.099. Besides bug fixing there's a new simple-dead-key conversion and a hotkey-edit mode as well as the use of NList classes for the keymap lists, which may now be used in hex mode. (snx) (Translation: dm)

New AmigaOne firmware available
Leuven, Belgium - October 6th 2004.
In preparation for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, Hyperion Entertainment is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the much improved U-Boot 1.1.1 for AmigaOne SE and XE motherboards.
New features include:
- Support for multiple graphics cards. At this time the last graphics card (usually the AGP card) is used for primary display. Later versions will include an option to choose.
- Support for booting off a Silicon Image 0680 IDE controller. This feature has to be selected manually at the moment, by entering setenv ide sii from the U-Boot shell.
- New CPU support: IBM PowerPC 750GX is now fully supported.
A problem has been fixed that made the U-Boot environment settings unavailable when rebooting from Linux.
- Support for LBA48 IDE drives, i.e. you can now boot off drives that are bigger than 160 GB.
- Support for the new Second-Level Bootloader (that can boot Linux besides AmigaOS), to be distributed with the upcoming AmigaOS 4 update.
- Numerous bug fixes and improvements.
The new U-Boot will be required for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, to be released shortly to registered AmigaOS 4.0 pre-Release owners.
The download is available in our Downloads section.

Genesi Scandinavia presents the CrabFire Multi-purpose Firewall
Göteborg, Sweden, 2004-10-01 - Newly formed Genesi Scandinavia presented the CrabFire firewall at Smart Networks Developer Forum (SNDF) in Frankfurt, Germany. The CrabFire is not only a firewall, but also a spam and virusfilter.
The firewall can be configured to filter spam and e-mail virus heading for your corporate mailserver. If your company has several office-locations one CrabFire can be placed in each office and a secure, encrypted tunnel can be opened between them. Your employers will be able to access all computers just as if they were on the same local network.
One other thing you can use your CrabFire for is Packet filtering. With this feature you can stop network users from using any Internet applications you do not want to be used -- such as peer-to-peer file sharing and instant messaging programs. Changing the service ports in these applications will not work - the CrabFire scans within the packets for signatures from these programs and will stop or log them, depending on your configuration.
The CrabFire runs on a 1GHz 7447 PowerPC processor and has 1 Gigabit Ethernet port (LAN) and 1 10/100 Mbit port (WAN). A dual-Gigabit version will be available shortly. The specifications are subject to small changes towards the final release.
Genesi Scandinavia received very positive feedback from both attendees and presenters at SNDF and we are confident that this product will be of great interest to companies all over the world. The CrabFire will be price-competitive towards competitive alternatives. We estimate this firewall will be finalized in three months.
About Genesi Scandinavia
Genesi Scandinavia is a newly formed company in Sweden. We will be producing and selling the CrabFire as well as other Genesi products. Genesi Scandinavia is privately held. The Marketing Director and Manager is Kristian Eklund.

News about Fun of Computing 2004
This year's Fun of Computing 2004 begins in just a few days. So it's high time some interesting news was released about it.
In the first place we are pleased to officially announce that the firm yellowTAB is listed on the page of exhibitioners. At yellowTAB's stand there's naturally going to be a presentation of their operating system ZETA. ZETA, based on well-known BeOS, will be offered at a special price during the convention.
[MorphOS and Pegasos will be demonstrated by Axel Knabe. Titan Computing will also be there demonstrating their products like Burn-It Pro and Papyrus Office. -dm]
On the subject of AmigaOS 4 there's going to be a special presentation from Jens Langner in which he'll demonstrate the current stage of development of the OS, and talk a bit about the past and the future of the new Amiga OS. Notice is given that this is Jens' private initiative and not an official demo of the OS4 development team or Hyperion.
The team from Anime Development for Amiga (ADA) will be present on Saturday, presenting the latest version of its 3D engine for the game Secret Of My Soul (SOMS).
On Saturday even Matthias Goldisch of the advertisement agency "aktuell" will be there at Fun of Computing, and along with hardware and software for the themes of retro-computing, C64, Amiga and Pegasos, there'll also be computer-themed merchandise, and periodicals like Amiga Plus, Amiga Future and GO64.
For all those who want to keep playing Amiga games, even after a power failure, we have a workable solution. Thanks to the friendly support of Marcus Werum, the inventor of the original Amiga card game, there's now a limited amount of the cardsets available to be handed out on request, at no charge. Only while supplies last, of course!
From the editors of "Amiga Future" there's now also a limited number of examples of their Amiga newspaper, no charge.
You'll find more information about the convention, as well as important tips for getting there and returning, under the appropriate menu selections at the Internet site for Fun of Computing 2004. (ps) (Translation: dm)

E3B and individual Computers join forces
E3B and individual Computers have a long standing friendship reaching back to the year 2001 when E3B was founded.
When the USB-controller "SUBWAY" hit the market, the two companies worked together to ensure optimal cross-vendor functionality for a better customer experience.
Resources and materials were shared for the manufacturing process.
Over time the cooperation was extended. Due to the great demand, E3B started
another production run of the "SUBWAY". This production brings the two companies
even closer together when synergy effects of a joint PCB production are used to keep prices low while improving the quality.
It were the good direct contacts of individual Computers to the chip manufacturer Transdimension (USA) that made the continuation of the SUBWAY possible.
Both sides are looking forward to further cooperations and are currently evaluating possibilities for joint developments. (cg)

MorphOS: SeventhSense 0.14 released
Grzegorz Kraszewski has released Vversion 0.14 (118 KB) of his scanner for website updates "SeventhSense".
SeventhSense is working in multithreading and thus allows to check many websites in shortest time. It is possible to check about 10 pages/minute with an analog V90 modem. The HTTP header dates are checked, optional more data of any kind may be used for the version check. Thanks to OpenURL support updated pages are to open easily by a double click. An example list for some of the most popular MorphOS and Amiga sites is included.
Changes since V0.13:
- BUGFIX: [http.stream] Busylooping on some HTTP/1.0 sites
- BUGFIX: When user selected "Load" from menu and then cancelled the ASL requester, the program still loaded default site list. Bug reported by Audun Evensen
- FEATURE: Sites can be disabled (from the context menu), disabled sites are not checked and marked with a blue LED. Feature suggested by antibike
- FEATURE: "Updated" status of a webpage (marked by emboldening its name) can be manually cleared with context menu "Forget update" option, it can be done for all sites with "Forget all" button. Feature suggested by antibike
- FEATURE: SeventhSense now remembers a path to loaded site list. At the next start this remembered list is loaded. "Save" option in main menu saves to currently loaded list, "Save as default" saves to "PRGODIR:sites.list". Both options make backups by adding ".bak" to the filename. Feature suggested by antibike
- FEATURE: Path to currently loaded site list is displayed on the window titlebar.
- FEATURE: Length differencies are now shown properly

Wireless network driver beta version released
A beta version of a new wireless network driver is available for download. It supports PCMCIA cards in the A1200/A600 and PCI cards on the AmigaOne.
For potential compatibility information, see Absolute Value System's directory of wireless chipsets. If a card's chipset is listed there as Orinoco, Agere or Prism (except the SSF version) and its bus type is PCMCIA or PCI, it is likely to work. If the card is listed there but doesn't match these requirements, it will definitely not work.

Elbox: Mediator Multimedia CD update 1.26 supports further TV cards
Elbox Computer is pleased to have completed development of drivers for a series of new TV card models, these drivers being released today. See the Mediator Driver Guide for the current list of PCI TV cards supported in MEDIATOR busboards. The MM CD 1.26 update is free for all registered Mediator Multimedia CD users.
Additionally, the new tv.library ver. 4.0 has added Stereo-NICAM TV sound processing for TV cards fitted with a single-chip Digital TV Sound Demodulator-Decoder TDA9874A by Philips.
The new library has added processing of the new Front End by YMEC: TVision 5V TVF-8533B/DF. These Front Ends are installed in the latest Prolink TV cards, e.g. in the now-supported PixelView PlayTV Pro MPEG (model M4800). New Front Ends are much more sensitive than those fitted in older TV card models. Quality of the broadcast is now excellent, even when the antenna signal is relatively weak.
The new library has added processing of the new radio sets installed in the latest TV cards. These are single-chip, digitally tuned FM stereo radio sets TEA5767 by Philips.
To ensure handling new radio sets, the API of tv.library was expanded. The current developer's documentation (ver. 4.0) is available from the Mediator Multimedia CD 1.26. The new tv.library is compatible backwards with all the previous tv.library functions maintained. As a result, the current versions of TV card control GUI -- like TvR and SuperTV -- work with the new tv.library without any modifications.
The MM CD 1.26 update includes also the new driver for Fast Ethernet 10/100Mbps cards. The FastEthernet.device ver. 1.15 driver has been reworked for AmigaOS4 compatibility.
Info on the current versions is available in the DOWNLOADS | Mediator section. The current list of supported PCI cards is available in the Mediator Driver Guide. The info about Mediator-related sources you will find in the COMMUNITY section. (snx)

Hyperion: Betatesting of the update of OS4-developer preversion started (Update)
According to Ben Hermans on Amigaworld.net yesterday the beta testing of the first update
of the developer preversion of AmigaOS4 was started.
The update for registered OS4-users will have about 30 MB. Should this size of the archive for anybody means a problem this can be solved.
Update: (20:04, 11.09.04, snx)
As Hans-Jörg Frieden (Hyperion) notifies us, the betatest that started yesterday night actually already concerns the installation CD. The individual components of the update are being tested a much longer time already. (snx) (Translation: dr)

AmiBlitz2-Distribution not complete: English PED-version now added
In the distribution there is the German version of PED (programming editor) two times.
Because of that Amiblitz use always the German language in each version.
Therefore there is a new version ready for download. All those who have already downloaded
the archive can also seperately download the PED in the AmiBlitz section.
Thank you Fulvio Peruggi who noticed the mistake.

MorphOS: Updates of Webserver Apache and thttpd
Matthias Münch has compiled updates of the webserver Apache and thttpd
for MorphOS.
The last one is a fast and little webserver for simple websites which is now available
in version 2.25b. Before you start it you have to adapt the file thttpd.conf.
The current version 1.3.31 of Apache is only the main program. Therefore an existing installation
is required.

Another Producer Recognizes JPEG Patents
Macromedia follows Adobe as the second large software producer to yield to the license of the alleged patent holder Forgent.
Forgent claims to hold a patent that is infringed by the compression methods in JPEG data. A few months ago Forgent accused 31 companies of not making license payments (we reported). Complete article under the title link. (cg) (Translation: dm)

MorphOS: Update of eDonkey Client Bourriquet to Version 0.2.5
Bourriquet, the filesharing client for the eDonkey network from SixK (reverse engineering of the protocols and kernel development) and Rusback (mainly development of the GUI by way of MUI), has reached beta version 0.2.5.
This version is mostly considered for test use (in which debug output is generated) but it also allows one to contact a server, search for data, download small amounts of data, and upload data.
Interested developers may contact either co-author if they would like to take part in this project. There's still a lot to do and we're looking for support, as in the related case of Morgoth, the source of which is available at Castor CVS.
