CeBIT 2003: Report and photos from Ron van Herk

A short summary of some of the things happening here at CeBIT from Ron van Herk

1. We have nearly finalized our agreement with our new Russian Distributor. MorphOS will have a Russian localisation and will become successful in Russia. Genesi's André Siegel will work as an 'interface' between the new distributor and the developers that need to get this done. Russian programmers interested in assisting this process can receive a fully configured Pegasos in exchange for their work. In the bigger picture, once the Russian localisation is done we will have a model to do the same in other languages and localisations.

2. 3Sat visited Genesi today and shot footage of the Pegasos, the Psylent, MorphOS, etc. We showed MorphOS working with several apps, games and the Internet which they all filmed. The editor, Ralph Benz is a long-time Amiga user and is very enthusiastic! We gave him a bunch of T-Shirts to give to viewers (or to keep for themselves). Not a bad deal for free TV coverage I'd say ;-)

Enclosed are two pics, 1 high-res foto of the desktop case and one of me and Robert Han of Plexuscom with the Psylent.

That's all for now.

Sincerely, Ron (ps)

Carsten Siegner (ANF)

Compass Hardware for Amiga (Principle Circuit)
Carsten Siegner has built a principle circuit for a compass. This circuit is unusually sensitive and already detect the north pole of the Earth's magnetic field.

For the operation here comes a very sensitive KMZ-51 magnetic field sensor. This includes a sensitivity of - 0.2 kA/m to + 0.2kA/m. Built into the chip are magnetic recessive resistances in the form of a Wheatstone bridge. The sensitivity (uncompensated), relative to measurement setting, carries (16mV/V) / (kA/m).

Attention: the sensor is circuit broken in an SMD housing and on that account may only be soldered with great difficulty. The sensor can pick up the electrical field of the computer. So one must compensate for this. One may not divert a magnetic field greater than 1 kA/m with the sensor, or else the Wheatstone bridge will always keep the exit value. In order for this not to happen one must use the chip's internal reset coils. The chip ZN424 is unfortunately very difficult to flush. Unfortunately it is so far the only operation enhancer that can energize the tension variables of the Earth-field detector. Siegner tested other OPs, but none came close to the strengthening of the ZN424.

Unfortunately the software programming is not as simple a thing as the hardware. The measurement value fluctuates constantly due to the diverting magnetic fields of the TV or the computer. On account of that one can't directly recognize the Earth's magnetic field. Of course when one adjusts the circuit slowly then one recognizes that the measurement value declines further, the more the sensor is turned from the north-south position. Because the sensor is now polarized, this means that one can differentiate a magnetic field between north and south, and may now recognize the Earth's magnetic field from the correction measurement value. Only the calculations of the whole thing are going to be beautifully difficult. Every metallic resistance will cause disturbance to the setting of the measurement values. (nba) (Translation: dm)

The Legacy: Over 850 Updates
The Legacy is a games museum for C64, Amiga, Atari, PC, Schneider/Amstrad CPC, in which readers contribute screenshots, cover scans and information about the developers. Today 660 screenshots, 150 goodies and 60 cover scans were added.

The original report: The old museum keeper has the honor to arrange a few words from the common folk! We'll make it brief! New articles as far as the eyes can see! Statistics? 660 (!) screen shots, some in progressively displaying format, some enlargeable. 150 goodies and 60 cover scans. And if you think that's rewarding, oh yeah, there are also 4 Amiga soundtracks! You all are invited, my friends, to wander to your heart's content in our little museum! (nba) (Translation: dm)

Martin Heine (E-Mail)

CeBIT 2003 - Visit to Genesi (Update II)
Martin Heine describes his impressions of Genesi's convention stand at this year's CeBIT 2003 in Hannover. You'll find a few pictures at the end of his report.

The first appearance of Genesi at the CeBIT in Hannover takes place at the stand of Plexus - on the other hand Plexus will be Genesi's guest at this year's CeBIT Australia.

Pegasos computers with MorphOS installed are being shown, another board separately for demonstrational purposes, as well as case prototypes for example for the Pegasos homeserver Psylent or high end "set top boxes" (as opposed to smaller, simpler DTV STBs).

One of the Pegasos computers is to be found in a prototype case, which was also just displayed in Aachen: here sits a micro ATX board directly behind an LCD display, and in the base you'll find for example the CD drive and the frontal USB connections.

As a small new MorphOS development (in relation to the latest update on the FTP server) a transparent menu option is there, as well as a graphical selector for setting Preferences.

In the way of programming, Internet and multimedia software were shown, as well as a range of emulators, for example Bochs, through which Windows95 was run in an Ambient window on the G3/600 Pegasos.

There were no new press releases, at least not on the first day of the convention, but it was confirmed that the long awaited Articia Northbridges from Mai arrived by Genesi in the meantime, so the last run of Pegasos boards may now go into production.

Addtionally Arend-Paul Spijkerman, the developer of Mediapoint, was hired by Genesi. With this product, combined with Pegasos and MorphOS, Genesi is able to open another market segment, and Ron van Herk hopes to be able to demonstrate this at CeBIT Australia.

No official news was offered about the Pegasos II, however one may be confident that the development might be concluded earlier than expected.

Finally, a TV crew paid Genesi a visit: Ralph Benz von "Neues..." (ZDF/3sat) was reported in detail on Wednesday about current events related to Pegasos and MorphOS and he'll be back again with the camera crew to film on the second day of the convention. (nba)

Terra Soft: Teron-PPC-Board not longer available in the Online-Store
Terra Soft ATX PowerPC Systems
Terra Soft Current and Pending Customers,

"Many of you have enthusiastically and patiently awaited the delivery of MAI Logic's Teron motherboards on which Terra Soft's Boxer ATX systems will be built. We have removed the Teron-based systems from our online Store until further notice in order to reduce further confusion and false expectations. We promise to bring this product to market as soon as possible." -- Terra Soft Team

Background could be a diversity of opinion between Terra Soft and Mai Logic. According to rumors, which Mike Bouma in the Amiga World forum drew "from reliable sources", Terra Soft demands 20 US dollar per produced and sold Main board, including the AmigaOne boards, since these boards can implement Yellow Dog Linux.
