OpenStreetMap viewer: MUIMapparium 0.8
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's OpenStreetMap viewer Mapparium has been updated to version 0.8 for all Amiga systems.
He wrote: "One disadvantage of writing a program relying on web resources is, that you have to update that program everytime the webresource is changed/updated. In the next days the search for MUIMapparium will break again, and the Find by IP/ Find me is broken a while before already.
So I updated MUIMapparium to Version 0.8 I also added some small new features, like some more shortcuts and also by popular demand to jump automatically to the first search result. Best update soon before the search function does not work anymore.
Also the 68k freepascal compiler got some updates which hopefully improve the stability and speed of the m68k-amiga Version."

Windows: MagicWB style
Sylvio Kurze wrote: As passionate Amiga user I never get used to the look and feel of Windows. I missed out the "good old days" when there were warm and comfortable colours as well as sharp buttons wizh high contrast. For me who has started with AmigaOS 2.1 and MagicWB, the excellent design is the main featute defining the Amiga Workbench.
Therefore I decided to start a project for bringing this look and feel to Windows.
It includes:
- Over 2500 MagicWB icons have been converted into the PNG and Windows-ICO format
- RocketDock background
- Rainmeter skin
- Windowblinds theme
- Background and goodies
- Several mouse pointers
Required software:
- Rainmeter for the Amiga bar and Spinning Boingball
- WindowBlinds for a complete rework of windows, menus and task bar
(I know, this takes some money but it is worth the 5 Dollar!)
- RocketDock for a MagicWB-like launcher
(It looks like Mac OS but is highly customizable.)

AMOS Professional X: Adapting AMOS to AGA
For quite some time the source codes of the BASIC development environment "Amos Professional" has been available on Github. Frédéric Cordier (e.g. game engine AmiDark) has taken on the task of developeing it further and adding new functions. On Amiga Impact he has described the progresses he made so far:
He has started his work on it a month ago and first he has implemented Dual Playfields (16 colours) under AGA (video), then he has added support for LORES screen solution with 256 colours (video) and extended the corresponding LoadIff method (video). Bobx also already works with 256 colours (video). As nhe next step he is going to add support for higher screen solutions.
In the download section of Cordier's Github repository an executable version of AMOS Pro is available but it seems to be an older version. The developer has not said when he will upload a first beta or alpha release.

AmigaOS 4: Update for retro arcade game "Huenison"
The commcercial game 'Huenison' (trailer) combines diverse features of former arcade games. This update for the game, orginally released in 2013, provides diverse improvements for the graphical representation:
- Simplified and optimized CRT pixel modes
- Made 4x LCD pixel mode slightly brighter
- Added 6x pixel modes
- Added hardware-accelerated zooming for solid pixel modes to AmigaOS version
The author points out that purchasers of the CD version theoretically can update their (burned) media since they deliberately have been burned as multi session CDs. You can get further information from his announcement on amigaworld.net.

USB interface for reading and writing floppy disks on PC: Greaseweazle
After his Gotek firmware FlashFloppy, Keir Fraser has started another project for reading and writing floppy disks on PC: Similar to Kryoflux, 'Greaseweazle' reads the magnetic layers of the disks independently of the used disk format and saves as much information as possible in a so called "Flux Level Image" in the Supercard-Format (SCP) which enables reading and writing copy-protected disks.
Among others SCP disk images are supported by WinUAE and FS-UAE. Using external tools it is possible to convert them to IPF which is a more known format of the Software Preservation Society. You can also create ADF images - if the disk is not copy-protected.
Greaseweazle consists of a mikro controller board that costs only a few euros which is connected to a disks drive and then via USB to the PC. All required software is available on Github under a free license.

Hardware extension: "A314" adds internal Raspberry Pi to A500
Niklas Ekström has developed a FPGA-based adapter board which allows you to connect a Raspberry Pi to the internal extension port of the Amiga 500. The Verilog source code, the source codes of the Amiga and Linux software as well as the design for the "A314" board are available at Github under a free license.
 |
 |
The Raspberry Pi makes 0,5 or 1 MB of its main memory available to the A500 depending on the used Agnus revision as chip or slow RAM. Both computers access this memory for exchanging data. Additionally there is a communication channel which both systems can use for poiting out to incoming data. A battery backed real time clock the A314 emulates as well. What tasks the software is to handle :
- a314fs: is a file system that is mounted in AmigaDOS as a device, PI0:.
- pi: is a command that lets you invoke executables on the RPi from the AmigaDOS CLI. For example, if your current working directory is on PiDisk: and you run "pi vc hello.c -o hello", then the vc program (the VBCC cross-compiler) is executed on the RPi with the given arguments. It will cross-compile "hello.c" into the Amiga executable file "hello". The resulting binary is immediately accessible through the a314fs.
- PiAudio: lets the RPi stream audio samples directly to the shared chip memory, from where Paula plays those samples. PiAudio is integrated with ALSA on the RPi so that any program that plays audio through ALSA can be used, i.e. "pi mpg123 -a amiga song.mp3" plays song.mp3 using the program mpg123 to the Amiga.
- VideoPlayer: is a simple program that displays a sequence of images on the A500 by letting the RPi write bitplanes directly to the shared memory (this again requires that the A314 memory is chip memory, and not "ranger" memory).
- RemoteWB: works by moving the Workbench bitplanes over to the chip memory on the A314. This requires that the A500 has at least a 8372 Agnus. During drawing of each frame on the Amiga, the RPi reads those bitplanes, encodes them into a GIF image, and transmits that image to a web browser through a web socket. The web browser in turn, returns key presses and mouse movements back to the Amiga through the same web socket. In effect, this becomes a web browser based remote control application, comparable to VNC but with near zero performance impact on the Amiga CPU!
 |
 |
In future Networking is planned either through a bsdsocket.library implementation that forwards socket operations to the RPi and executes those operations there (high degree of offloading), or a Sana II driver used with a full network stack (lesser, but still offloading).

Linux connection for Amiga Explorer: fuse-aexplorer and lxamiga.pl
fuse-aexplorer is a file system driver for Linux which can mount drives shared by Cloanto's Amiga network software Amiga Explorer under Linux. The author warns that his "software is highly experimental" and you use it "fully AT YOUR OWN RISK". He also explained that "the Amiga Explorer protocol really isn't meant to be used as a network file system". Therefore diverse hacks had to be used.
A something more simple approach lxamiga.pl uses: From a console window simple commands can be sent to an Amiga on which Amiga Explorer runs: Making a directory, transfering a file or writing an ADF image to a disk. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Vampire team distributed pirated software during 'Vampire Standalone' launch
For years, a customized, unlicensed distribution of AmigaOS 3.9 targeting the FPGA based 'Vampire' accelerators and Amiga clones has been available on the net. The package comes with tons of preinstalled software - including hundreds of games and productivity applications that used to be distributed commercially.
Whenever people were criticizing this, Gunnar von Boehn's Vampire team was quick to point out that they were not involved with the distribution called 'Coffin' and didn't see a reason to act.
But in the days following "Amiga 34", where the 'Vampire Standalone' variant was sold to endusers for the first time, an increasing number of users reported on a1k.org that they had recieved a CF card with preinstalled Coffin OS from Gunnar von Boehn himself when purchasing their Vampire computer (screenshots (German): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).
When other users started criticizing this approach to launching a commercial product into the market - selling 32 Vampire units at a price of 550 Euros each at A34 should have generated sales of more than 17000 Euros in just a few hours - Vampire spokesman 'grond' explained that the team had to switch back to Amiga Kickstarts due to "ongoing boot problems with AROS" and had bought Kickstart 3.1 licenses from Mike Battilana (Cloanto) right at the show. Additionally, "H&P had given their OK" for the distribution of AmigaOS 3.9, according to grond (Screenshot (German)).
This would explain just a tiny fraction of the software actually contained in the Coffin distribution - the package has a total size of 32 Gigabyte and contains a complete collection of preinstalled WHDLoad games as well as many other commercial titles such as Cinema 4D, SAS/C or "Foundation Director's Cut" - but was probably meant to diffuse the main point of criticism: Pirating software still available from dealers, like AmigaOS 3.9, is generally frowned upon, even in the usually rather 'Abandonware' friendly retro community.
But due to our own conversations with Jürgen Haage from many years ago, we doubted even the claim that the Vampire team got permission to distribute AmigaOS 3.9. And approached by amiga-news.de, Mr. Haage did indeed state that he didn't know about the Vampire project and did not have any communication with the people behind it - according to him, nobody approached Haage & Partner to ask about OS 3.9.
amiga-news.de has contacted Gunnar von Boehn to ask for a statement regarding this matter and to see if he could forward our mail to 'grond', since we do not have a contact address for the latter. Von Boehn states that his team "considers the current legal situation regarding the OS as very sad" und mentions that "not even properly purchased licenses might not guarantee legal ownership" - we assume he's referring to the legal battle between Hyperion and Cloanto. Mr. Von Boehn did not address Coffin OS in his reply, but admits in a subclause that he thinks Vesalia is still selling AmigaOS 3.9. We did not recieve a reply from 'grond'. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Acquisition of Amiga: Summary of Mike Battilana's speech at Amiga34 (Update)
At the "Amiga 34" in Neuss, Mike Battilana spoke at last. On the timetable he was not announced as "Cloanto" but due to his acquisition of the rights from Amiga Inc. as "Amiga". We want to summarize the most important facts of his speech:
Mike Battilana underlined his efforts of collecting the whole Commodore heritage to establish a reunited company "Commodore-Amiga". Again he suggested the idea of a foundation as a possible legal form for a new "Amiga" parent company as well as to release the source codes of software developed by Commodore.
About all other plans he has to remain discret but probably he could help developers by providing free licences. To be on the safe side, he acquired the domain amiga.com twice - for the first time in the course of Amiga, Inc.'s acquisition but also for the second time from Vince Pfeifer.
He is not offended by AmigaOS 3.1.4 at all but he would have preferred to be released after the lawsuit. Besides, he thinks that it should be available for free because the developers also have not get any money. Finally it should lead to an open source project.
With regard to the legal dispute he has emphasized his interest of coming to an agreement and that he commnunicates with Hyperion's CEO Timothy de Groote daily and meets him on a monthly basis. They were on good terms.
With regard to P96 he explained that in his conversation with Jens Schönfeld a settlement has not been reached but he is glad that they talked and at least could clarify some details. Furthermore he pointed out that he himself would have never spoken about lawsuits. Instead, he would prefer to solve problems quietly.
He has also told how interesting it was having a look at the Commodore documents because the business processes in many ways were ahead of the times. His company has a large archive of internal, electronial Commodore documentation and communication but having an eye to the privacy of the parties involved it would be difficult to make it available. Maybe step by step the archive can be partly published.
Update: (18:23, 02.11.19, snx)
Correction of the final sentence about P96, which had been interpreted more liberally before. (snx) (Translation: dr)
