CES: Interview with TAO's CEO Francis Charig
As already reported, Christoph Dietz flew to Las Vegas for amiga-news.de to attend and report directly from the CES. Here's the interview he had with the CEO of TAO, the software partner of Amiga Inc.:

Francis Charig (Chairman TAO)

Francis Charig (Chairman TAO)
Patrice Haftmann (Chairman/CEO Infomedia)
J.D. Ray (Präsident/COO Infomedia)

Amiga-News: Good morning Francis and thank you for the opportunity of this interview.

Francis Charig: It's a pleasure for me either!

Amiga-News: Let's start with some basic questions. How old are you and where are you born?

Francis Charig: Unfortunately I'm 40 years old. I was born in Oxted by London.

Amiga-News: Sure you are married and have children?

Francis Charig: Yes, my wife is Japanese and we have two boys. One is six and the other will be three in February.

Amiga-News: When and where was TAO (pronounced: DAO) founded?

Francis Charig: TAO was founded in 1992 in Bracknell nearby Reading, England. Until 1995 it was a virtual company, located in a bedroom.

Amiga-News: How many people are working for TAO?

Francis Charig: About 70 people. More then 50 of them are in the software department. They are coming from three major groups: the Video games industry, the Blue Chip Industry and we selected the best directly from the universities, Stanford for example.

Amiga-News: What's your position at TAO?

Francis Charig: I'm the chairman of TAO. TAO is not a public company. Sony and Motorola together own 30% of TAO. If TAO would be a public company, its market value would be about $100.000.000. Nowadays Amiga Inc. is our most important partner.

Amiga-News: Do you remember your greatest success?

Francis Charig: Of course, it was to bring this exiting engineering team together. These people are incredible. We only had a fluctuation of two people in the last 2 1/2 years.

Amiga-News: What was the worst day in TAO's history?

Francis Charig: [Thinks long] it was to loose business with our investor from the blue chip industry in 1995 while we had no customers.

Amiga-News: When did you had "First contact" with Bill McEwen?

Francis Charig: It was in October 1999. We introduced him to investors after he decided to use our software for the new Amiga. In fact: TAO saved Amiga.

Amiga-News: Are you familiar with Amiga's history?

Francis Charig: Yes, I know about it all. I know about Commodore, Escom, VisCorp, Gateway and all these things. I still have my Amiga, but unfortunately it's standing in the attic. Also my nephew used the Amiga. I loved gaming on it, e.g. BrakeOut.

Amiga-News: Can you describe the new OS with only three words?

Francis Charig: Consumer Multimedia Stack

Amiga-News: When will the new Amiga-OS be ready, in Q3/2001?

Francis Charig: Of course not! Someone in the next half year!

Amiga-News: We are just a few days in the New Year. Do you have a wish for this year?

Francis Charig: *Joking* Retirement. No, I wish that TAO would be successful in all of the key markets.

Amiga-News: Is the existing Amiga community important for you?

Francis Charig: Yes. The Amiga community provides ones of the best engineers and artist. There is more multimedia skill in the Amiga community than in the PC-World. But there is a discussion if memory protection is needed or not. I want to explain TAO's point of view. For what is memory protection needed? To prevent bad programmed software from crashing the computer. That means that it leads into bad programming. But the software for AmigaDE will run on your desktop but also on your mobile or in your car. Mobiles for example don't have memory protection. Are they crashing? No, the software for them is well programmed. If we add memory protection we have to have a very, very good reason. Because it slows down the operating system. Our goal is to deliver the best multimedia-operating stack. This also means speed!

Amiga-News: Some words to the community?

Francis Charig: We can make Amiga great together. To be great we have to lead the world. Amiga is delivering the best content to the mass market. If we always remember that, we can achieve.

Amiga-News: Thank you for this interview and have a successful stay at the CES.

Francis Charig: It was a pleasure to me. Thank you!

Heise: CES: The Computer Sector Deals in Entertainment Electronics
«On Saturday at 19 o'clock MET the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), the world's biggest annual entertainment electronics fair is opening its doors in Las Vegas. One and a half hour before, Bill Gates will hold his keynote, which he will - as known by now - change on the birth hour of his new favourite, the game console XBox.

Though this will be no more surprise to anybody, but there are a lot more things to discover at the CES: After all there are 1800 exhibitors at the start this year and in addition to this there is a "frame program" at the fair with over 100 presentations with about 300 experts. 110.000 visitors are expected from over 100 countries. The fair was first held back 1967 with some modest 200 exhibitors and 17.500 visitors.»

Christoph Dietz of amiga-news.de has flown to Las Vegas to report to our readers from the fair and to cover us with pictures. In addition he has arranged for some interesting interviews. You can expect interesting news.

The new forum is based on the Yet Another Bulletin Board' in short 'YaBB' and is offering every imaginable comfort. The forum will now be tested for some weeks and later on we will decide whether we stick to the system or remove it. The design is only partly adapted to out page. It will change during testing. To participate you need to register during which you can choose an appearance for yourself. If you wish so, your data will be stored in Cookies, so you will register automatically on your next visit. The new forum is really fun. We would be happy to find as many participants as possible. We will the create more special forums on request.»

Dear reader,

we have finished our move to the new server and if everything works as we expect, you can now see the scripts programmed by Sven Drieling in action on our German page.

The main change is that the entire news are now administrated in a database, you can comment on every single news and can send individual news to friends by e-mail. Also, you can view a printing and an ASCII version. If you prefer to see the start page with titles only, you can control this with the menu above.

We are looking forward to your comments. Write us what you like and what we could still improve.

Corinna Cohn. Interviewed Bill McEwen
Corinna Cohn. called up Bill McEwen, to clear up some rumors as much as possible. McEwen answered her some questions. Here a summary of what Bill McEwen answered:
  • AmigaOS 3.9 has upgraded Internet functionality that was missing from 3.5, and it has multimedia players. Otherwise, most of the functionality is similar to 3.5. Users will have to evaluate the features of 3.9 for themselves to see if there's any value added.
  • The last months were tight for Amiga Inc. from a financial point of view. They are looking for more investors. McEwen named several sources, among them a tier one company that would be interested in investing.
  • Bill McEwen is sure to have a product that hopefully impresses investors more than some of the ephemeral properties that other startups failed to sell.
  • Money is low. Will Amiga Inc. become insolvent? McEwen replied to this question that this is not true.
  • Amiga Inc. will only exhibit at Amiga trade shows. Products will be made available through vendors.
  • Bill McEwen named some manufacturers of set-top boxes which should be available soon. He is excited about other products appearing, especially something that should please Amiga users.
  • He reiterated that they (this being vendors using Amiga technology) had some products ready to debut and that we should stick around to see them.
Corinna Cohn. analyzes Bill McEwens statements as follows:
"Amiga does not have a product that I as an Amiga user would necessarily want, but that I as a computer geek might dig. We Amiga users are a technological launching platform for a new, possibly cool technology, and Amiga wants us to continue to pay attention to them until its ready. This explains 3.5 and 3.9, and it explains the early appearance of the developers kit. Amiga is going to continue to blow us kisses until they have something to impress us with or until they run out of money."

The computer industry is in an extremely hard competition. Even if it may be difficult for us at times not to lose our faith that Amiga Inc. will achieve what they have planned. It is worth acknowledging that they are obviously not willed to throw in the towel even though it would be easier and more promising to develop tools for another famous OS ...

Music: Psyria
Dennis Lohr 'Psyria' has been making music as a hobby for six years. he started with an A500 and Protracker 2.3a. Currently, he still creates his music mainly on the Amiga, but he uses the Digibooster today. He expresses his enthusiasm about the Digibooster like this: "For all Amigans who make music as well: have a look at that thing! There probably is no better tracker for the Amiga!"

Many of his songs (trance, techno, dancefloor, and pop) are available for download on his website at the title link. The website was entirely reworked lately.

VirusHelp Denmark: Update of xvs.library
Yesterday, an update to the xvs.library was released which can recognize the trojans "4kIntro Trojan" and Dkg-Blum Trojan. If you're using VirusChecker, VirusExecutor or VirusZ, make sure to update the library.
Some information on the release:

Name...: xvs.library v33.24
Archive name: xvslibrary.lha
Archiv size: 52.734 Bytes
Date: January 4th, 2001
Programmer: Alex van Niel

News for 33.24:
- 4kIntro Trojan added
Thanks to Ryben Kozlak and Jan Andersen
- Dkg-Blum Trojan added
Thanks to Peter Gordon, Urban Müller and Jan Andersen

NOTE:
This trojan also replaces/deletes or adds a file called asi.library XVS will not (yet) be able to detect this file because as far as I could analyze it, it looked like a normal VideoTracker file. If XVS would have to see this as a virus, more VideoTracker files will be fake detected. If you have problems or want this added anyway let me know.

STILL TO DO: - Add Neurotic Death 2 and Neurotic Death 4. These two linkviruses are polymorphic, but crash on my system if I try to infect some test files. It seems that they haven't been spread to the public, I received them anonymously from the author. So it's not that BIG danger at the moment. - Try to get and add GlobVec linkvirus. The only one who has it is Heiner Schneegold (author of VT-Schutz) and VTC Hamburg, but Heiner doesn't give his permission to the VTC to send me the virus :(

AmiBench News
Mark 'tecno' Wilson, the maintainer of AmiBench, the website for international free small ads, reports in his year summary about the adverse conditions capable to make a webmaster's life really hard, sometimes. AmiBench was hunted by bad luck last year: scripts which weren't finished; the service provider got hacked; the server played yoyo; the web account was closed by mistake; no feedback from the readers; ....

I can comprehend well that such conditions are very annoying and motivation goes to zero sometimes. Give Mark positive feedback to give his motivation a boost. :)

The Not-So-Serious Inside Story Announcement
Crack-off, 31 December 2000

The pi-pi-Castro Task Force is proud to promote the latest technique of advertising.

The pi-pi Castro Task Force hereby authorise everybody to read the secrets of their latest technology of collecting money in advertising and to disclose this secret to enyone on the way:
  • We, the world-famous pi-pi Castro Task Force, produced the world-famous graphic system for the world-dominant computer platform of the Ah-miga. Sure, we did some work. Nobody paid us for that :-(
  • Then we saw some people get big in the Ah-miga world.
  • We thought: "Why don't take money from them?"
  • We noticed Err-box produced their hardware (el mediatore).
  • Err-box produced their software (the pi-pi driver).
  • We did not help them (why should we?)
  • So we thought we could ask Err-box for money for using our world-famous name of pi-pi 96
  • Therefore we are world famous. Proved.
  • Err-box did not want to pay us.
  • We asked other friends to persuade Err-box.
  • Franco Mariacchi managed to get computers and Special-Delusion-Kit documents from Err-box - FOR FREE!!! Success!!!
  • Hi-period managed to get some hardware from Err-box plus the same paperwork. FOR FREE!!! Success!!!
  • We did not manage to get a single pfenig from Err-box. And we need paper too.
  • Franco Mariacchi and Hi-period are laughing at us.
  • Therefore we are suckers. And our friends are laughing at us. Proved.
  • Aha. A painting family wants us to pay DM 6,000 for using the "Pi-pi-Castro" name.
  • Therefore we wanted Err-box to pay it for us.
  • As Err-box are discussing the issue behind the curtain, and we need cash badly, we demand Ah-miga users to register our pi-pi system immediately and pay us for their being happy.
  • If nobody pays us, we will cry out that any other soap-ware worldwide is ill-egg-all. (Apart from our pi-pi-castro, sure enough.) Proved.

Err-box Komm-puter was happy to find the appropriate name for this new method of advertising: the REVERSE ADVERTISING. Danke mucho, err-boxie.

Please remember that you have to pay us DEM 5.00 or USD 10.00 every time you use the word "advertising".

The Pi-Pi-Castro Task Force

================

There is a popular custom in Poland to make jokes on colleagues and fellow people in the end of the year, to summarise the most prevalent features of their behaviour during the year. Here is our summary of what has transpired between the P96 team and ELBOX Computer during that time. Please take it with a bit of reserve, as we do not intend to offend anyone, just to introduce a pinch of humour into the issue, which seemed to be so tense and serious in the Amiga world.

Happy New Year!!!

Payback Status Report #17
On 30. December 2000 James Daniels has released the status report #17 regarding the game 'Payback'. The game now offers additionally a multiplayer deathmatch mode for up to 4 players. To do this much had to be changed in the source code and therefor much work had to be put into this mode as the game wasn't design for supporting a multiplayer mode first. But the work was, according to James Daniels, worth it. Screens of the multiplayer mode are released on the screenshots page. The latest photos there also contain the improved textures.

Besides that the game now supports also the CD32 controller, and several bugs have been fixed.

Hans-Joerg Frieden in the Forum

Warp3D and PCI Graphics Boards
Recently Hans-Jörg Frieden has expressed himself in our forum regarding the topic driver software for PCI graphics boards under Warp3D:

«Unfortunately the number of e-mails regarding Warp3D and PCI cards accumulates for Thomas and me. Almost every time it is "I have purchased a card of the brand XXX, when will you have 3D drivers ready?"...

Regarding this I want to say the following: Warp3D is and will continue to be a hobby project that is cooking on smaller flame as for now, because of the time consumption of Hyperion. If possible we'll write drivers. Nevertheless I will explicitly point out, that the buying of a graphics card is no cogent reason for us to produce a driver for it - as that takes quite some time. There will probably be no driver for Voodoo 5 (V4 is questionable but more likely), none for GeForce, Riva TNT, ATI Rage or whatever else, especially when there exists no chip documentation. Neither we will attempt to recycle a Linux driver.

In the case that somebody could get some chip documentation (legal!) and make it available for us the chances for a driver increase but this is no guarantee either.»

Via email Hans-Joerg adds that this is no kind of arbitrariness but only a hint that people shouldn't waste their money for graphics cards that can't be supported simply because of the lack of time or documentation...

We are getting mails all the time from people asking for GeForce support or Voodoo 5 but for those documentation isn't accessible. We have tried it even at NVidia, without success, even not against NDA... :-(
