Turn-based strategy game: Demo version of "Ecliptic"
Ecliptic is described by the author as a mixture of turn-based tactical combat and role-playing. Visually, it is reminiscent of the retro-futuristic science fiction of the 1970s and 1980s. The player's task is to regain control of a spaceship drifting in space and occupied by aliens. A first demo has now been released.
The game is currently under development and has no sound at the moment. It requires 1MB RAM, recommended is an Amiga 1200 with HD and Fast RAM.

Amiga Kit: ARM Graphics library for A600GS computer
Press release: AmigaKit Ltd is pleased to announce an important software development for
the forthcoming A600GS computer system (amiga-news.de reported). The new ARM Graphics Library is pre-installed accelerating the performance of AmiBench and 68K applications.
The ARMgraphics.library was created by AmigaKit's in-
house developer to bypass the bottleneck of the 68K graphics
functions. It accelerates graphics rendering performance in
applications.
AmiBench is pre-installed on the A600GS computer system. It
opens the desktop environment in high resolution 1080p with
True Colour icons. Now it can use the new ARM Graphics
Library for various purposes including faster rendering of
windows, icons and backgrounds.
Third party developers can take advantage of this library by using
it's powerful functions from their 68K application. It also offers an
opportunity for 68K games developers to enhance their games
with faster graphics rendering.
The library provides a link between 68K programs and the native
ARM processor.
Further work is underway to patch 68K system graphics functions
so older applications that are not written to use the ARM
Graphics Library can benefit.
AmigaKit has developed AK-Datatypes, Picture Datatype and Datatypes Library over the many years for
the Enhancer Software on X5000, X1000 and A1222+. These have been compiled for 68K to run on the
A600GS, In addition these system components can also be accelerated by the ARM Graphics Library for
extra performance.
The A600GS computer system is due for launch in the second quarter of 2024.

Preview video: Platform game "Deathmine" (V0.05C)
In the middle of last year, we reported on an early version of the game "Deathmine" as an entry for the Amiga Blitz Basic Jam. At the end of October, the developer 'pixelplop' had converted the game into C/C++ code and has now published a new preview video, showing the following new features and changes:
- The flame on the HUD lantern gets smaller as the lantern oil depletes.
- The map graphics slowly get darker as the lantern oil depletes.
- Changed the throwable flares to dynamite.
- Added dynamite sticks to the HUD so you can see how many you are carrying.
- When the dynamite explodes it briefly lights up the screen revealing the map.
- Added an Oil can and Dynamite pickup.
- When you die you leave a grave stone behind as a permanent marker.
- Hardware sprites now clip correctly with the top of the screen.
- Hardware sprite data fixed so it ends in a blank line which prevents glitches.
- Added sfx for the toxic drip and other misc sfx.
- Improved character movement.
- Improved character collision and ladder logic.

Cross development: amitools 0.8.0 for macOS
Christian Vogelgsang has published amitools, a collection of Python 3 tools that should make it possible to work with Amiga OS binaries and files on macOS and all other *nix-like platforms that support Python. The author has not tested it on Windows, but it should work just as well.
The developer focusses his tools on classic Amiga setups, i.e. a 680x0-based system running Amiga OS 1.x - 3.x. However, as this is an open project, other Amiga configurations can also be supported. However, as this is an open project, other Amiga configurations can also be supported. The tools are mostly developer orientated, so a background in Amiga programming will be very helpful. A documentation is available on GitHub.

Creating Amiga Reaction GUIs: ReBuild v1.1.0
In mid-November, we introduced Darren 'dmcoles' Cole's "ReBuild" in detail, which is intended to make it possible to create graphical user interfaces for ReAction, the evolution of ClassAct (for example EmptyADF). Changes of version 1.1.0:
- Creating a virtual gadget could cause crashes (due to a bug
in the version of E-VO used to compile 1.0.0)
- About dialog changed 'Rebuilder' To 'Rebuild'
- Loading a bitmap with no image selected reported an incorrect error
- Added option to generate code that does not use macros in the object
definitions (for better GCC compatibility).
- add GA_TabCycle property to click tab
- code generated for fuel gauge now uses GA_Text instead child label
- fuel gauge used incorrect default number of ticks
- GetScreenMode did not include child label in generated code
- Glyph did not include child label in generated code
- Glyph used incorrect default type
- Added USEMACROS tooltype
- Sketchboard was missing many of the settings in the generated code
- SizeBRight and SizeBBottom did not work correctly in preview window

Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

Version 3.6 has several new features, such as a high quality mixing option that exchanges CPU time for higher quality sound, a plugin system so that effects can be added to samples that are being played (such as pitch changes), the ability to loop from any point in the sample rather than only the start and more.

AI assistant for Amiga development: "Amiga Guru"
Cameron Armstrong, author of the chat program AmigaGPT (amiga-news.de reported), has created a custom GPT based on the Amiga documentation so that it is much more accurate for Amiga development than the standard ChatGPT.
Since ChatGPT sometimes knows quite little about Amiga development (and therefore often gives wrong, albeit convincing, answers), he has created a custom GPT tailored to Amiga development.
It has been trained on the entire contents of all current editions of the official reference manuals, some third-party Amiga development books and all current documentation autodocs for AmigaOS 3.2 and 4.1.
Chatting with custom GPTs requires a ChatGPT Plus subscription.

DIY: "Joystick Reanimator" repairs micro switches using electric impulses
C64 fan 'GI-Joe' - a service technician in real life - has come across many faulty microswitches in his professional life. The silver-plated switching contacts of switches that only have to switch very low currents were often oxidized: the arcing that occurs at higher currents, which "cleans" the oxidizing contacts in a kind of self-cleaning function, does not occur at lower currents. Sooner or later, the electrical resistances become too high due to the oxidizing switching contacts, even though the switch switches mechanically perfectly.

Emulator: WinUAE 5.2.0
The Amiga emulator WinUAE has been released in version 5.2.0. Changes:
New features/updates
- MacroSystem DraCo emulation. Full emulation except V-Lab Motion video board which is totally undocumented. Amiga clone without Amiga custom chips.
- Picmatic Marbella Vice light gun laser disc arcade game is now fully working.
- American Laser Games and PicMatic statefile support.
- Genlock emulation display positioning/scaling updates.
- Retina Z2 and Z3/Altais RTG board emulation. (NCR 77C22E+ and 77C32BLT SVGA chips)
- S3 Trio64 PCI RTG board.
- On screen led font is now configurable, settings in GUI Miscellaneous panel.
- A2410 updates (Latest Picasso96 driver with DMA mode enabled graphics corruption)
- All emulated RTG boards now autoswitch (Automatic switch between chipset mode and RTG mode). Previously only RTG boards that have built-in switcher and PCI RTG boards autoswitched.
- Do not emulate special cases in native chipset screen mode last and first line(s) unless Overscan mode is Overscan+ or higher. (For example OCS Denise top and bottom line mismatched blanking start and end)
- NTSC mode screen vertical positioning improved.
- Disk swapper insert/remove cursor position now works as expected. Same image can be inserted in multiple slots.
5.1.0 Bugs fixes
- Fast 68020+ mode interrupt timing fix. (Some games hung or had missing or badly playing sound)
- Copper timing was unreliable in non-CE modes (Mainly affected horizontally multiplexed sprites)
- Dark mode was not initialized if config file was started directly (for example from command line), without opening GUI. Some sub-dialogs didn’t support dark mode.
- Zero length disk DMA with enabled disk word sync never finished (some copy protections failed to work).
- Game Ports panel default config overrode button 4 with on screen keyboard enable/disable option even if it was already configured in Input panel.
Older bug fixes
- Any TV overscan option + NTSC mode: few pixel grapohics corruption was visible in right edge of screen.
- Many hardware emulated RTG boards had problems with horizontal panning.
- 68040 MMU emulation fix. (MOVEM restart didn’t work correctly in all situations and MOVES 68040-only special case bus fault behavior was wrong)
- CyberVision 64/3D and Picasso IV overlay fixes. P96PipDemo is now working correctly.
- Ateo Pixel 64 had BGR/RGB swapped colors in most color depths.
- UAE AHI ignored AHI volume slider setting.
- Fixed mouse cursor jumping randomly when in tablet mode and clicking mouse button(s).
- Game Ports panel input device type getting stuck or entering Test/Remap window crashing in some situations.
- Some config file and registry/ini paths were always written in absolute format even if WinUAE was configured to relative path mode.
- "AVI output enabled" (and few similar on/off buttons) button type changed, previously they worked unexpectedly in some situations, visible state was not always matching internal state.
- Some sub dialogs (for example Gameports input mapping autofire) had old style and no high DPI support.
- 256 color screenshot mode created wrong colors in some situations, usually when AGA and almost all palette entries were allocated.
- Changing some native display settings (Filter/Display panel) settings didn’t reset all required display parameters until full display reset (for example window was resized)

Emulation: BBoot bootloader V0.6 for QEMU
BBoot is a simple, minimal bootloader for loading AmigaOS on QEMU-emulated AmigaOne and Pegasos2 machines, written by Amiga QEMU developer Balaton Zoltan (amiga-news.de reported). It replaces amigaboot.of on Pegasos2 and slb_v2 on AmigaOne and simplifies the booting of AmigaOS 4 under QEMU. A firmware ROM is no longer required. The current version 0.6 solves problems when booting the AmigaOne machine with the latest QEMU 9 version.
As Balaton Zoltan kindly explains to us, this new version is currently only required for those users who compile QEMU themselves from the current Git master repository, from which version 9.0 will later emerge.
The developer has also provided a tutorial Booting AmigaOS 4.1 on QEMU with BBoot.
However, as Alinea, for example, has informed us, the AmigaOne version of AmigaOS 4 has not been available for some time despite ordering from Hyperion Entertainment. The company could not be reached for comment.

AROS: Music program ProTrekkr v2.6.6 (update)
ProTrekkr is a tracker program combining a software synthesizer together with a traditional samples tracker which can (mainly) be used to create electronic music (like psytrance, trance goa, hard acid, IDM, chip, techno, jungle, etc.) targeting small sized intros, demos or games. Now version 2.6.5 was released for AROS (and FreeBSD, macOS and Windows). Changes:
- Added handling for 512 midi patches via bank selection.
- Fixed a couple of bugs in the standalone replay.
- Added effects 3F & 40 to set the scale of the two 303 units.
- The file keyboards.txt was missing from the repository.
- Added effects 29, 2A & 2B to turn tracks compressor on/off, set compression threshold & ratio respectively.
- Fixed the audio bug on Intel Macs.
Download: ptk_v2.6.6_aros.zip (23 MB)
Update (21.02.2024, 06:05):
Version 2.6.6 is available and the download link above was adapted. Changes:
- Doesn't actualize UI from audio thread anymore (which fixed a few issues).
- Fixed the 303 units note off bug.
- Added a function to swap two instruments in the patterns.
- Refactored a lot of the code

- Butterflies
- Score screen, including breakdown of each player's kills vs other players
Still to come:
- Title screen text loop
- Performance mode build for smooth gameplay on A500
- Mega Drive conversion
- Maybe additional levels derived from the original game's map packs?
- AI and/or some form of single player mode

Tool: EmptyADF 1.0
After several beta versions, Darren 'dmcoles' Cole released the first stable version of "ReBuild" about a week ago, which should make it possible to create graphical user interfaces for ReAction, the evolution of ClassAct (amiga-news.de reported). Krzysztof Donat (bitplan) has now used ReBuild to create the EmptyADF tool, which can be used to generate empty ADF files. Main features:
- creating DD (880 KB) or HD (1.76 MB) disk images
- creating OFS or FFS disk images
- creating images with or without system bootblock
- creating disk images with your own label
- completing system disk dates:
- last root alteration date
- last disk alteration date
- filesystem creation date
He tested it under AmigaOS 3.2, but it should run on any Amiga with Kickstart 3.0+ and installed ReAction libraries.

Twin-Stick-Shooter: Pre-Order of boxed editions of Cecconoid
At the end of 2022, the musician, DJ and developer 'Hoffman' - for example the Amiga port of Knightmare - began porting the game "Cecconoid", originally published by "Triple Eh?": "an 8-bit inspired, flick-screen, twin-stick-shooter, set in an alternate dimension where the pixels are still chunky, and the bad guys are black and white. Except for their dangly red bits..." (YouTube video).
Now Thalamus Digital, an independent video game developer and publisher, is offering the game for pre-order in various boxed versions, which should be available in April 2024. As the developer explained to us when asked, the game has now been finalised and the digital version should also be available when the physical versions start shipping.

TCP/IP stack: Roadshow 1.15 released
Press release: "Slightly delayed by only 18 months (we are getting faster), the free Roadshow TCP/IP stack 1.15 update is now available to all customers.
This update is focused on improving installation and maintenance tasks, as well as making the installation documentation more useful and accessible. The single documentation file, still small in 2014, became increasingly unwieldy and has become a set of shorter files, each focused on one single aspect of Roadshow. By request, new documentation has been added which details all the files which will be installed for Roadshow.

AROS distribution: AROS One 2.4 (x86)
The distribution "AROS One" (screenshot), which is based on the AROS binary interface ABI v0, is now available in version 2.4 for x86 computers. It can be downloaded as a DVD ISO file or as a USB flash image at the title link, where video recordings can also be found.
This is the most stable AROS x86 version to date, with many bug fixes relating to Wanderer and hardware compatibility, the list of which has since been further revised. Above all, however, the distribution has now been compiled with the C library, which makes porting and compiling easier for developers, but requires to be installed from scratch because it is no longer compatible with the old core and the old software included in the contrib archive. Thus own configurations of the included software must therefore be saved and reinstalled manually.

Apollo cards: File sharing tool "ApolloExplorer" v1.1.3 (update)
ApolloExplorer is a simple file exchange programme that can be used to transfer files from a PC to an Amiga running an Apollo card and vice versa over the network. A server software runs in the background on the Amiga and allows a client running on a PC with Windows, Linux or MacOS to connect to the Amiga and browse the local hard drives. This is the first stable version, while previous ones were still considered as beta versions. Changes:
- A problem where certain Apollo Accelerator targeted distributions used an icon for the SD Card that didn't appear in the PC client browser has been fixed.
- Similarly, FAT filesystems (SD Cards are formated such) will get the default def_SD0.info icon if this available on the Amiga.
Update: (12.02.2024, 20:18, dr)
The developer has pointed out that his application should basically run on all Amigas that are equipped with sufficient CPU and RAM to run a web browser. For example, ApolloExplorer should work on PiStorm Amigas or 68030 Amigas.

Music: Piano arrangements of Amiga game music
Grazia Pizzuto is a church musician in Bonn and teaches piano and improvisation. She also runs a YouTube channel where she presents piano arrangements of game music, including Amiga games. She has recently published the following songs:
When asked how she came to arrange and play Amiga game music, Grazia kindly replied:
"I have never had an Amiga myself. It all started when my husband introduced me to Chris Hülsbeck's Piano Collection. These are sheet music and CD/mp3s that we had supported as a Kickstarter project. When I heard this music for the first time, it immediately appealed to me and since then I've always been looking for good music in (retro) computer games.
Several factors play a role in the selection of the pieces: First and foremost, I consider the recommendations/tips from my viewers. Another decisive factor is how much the pieces appeal to me personally. I also talk to my husband about how much a piece of music evokes nostalgia in him (he had a C64 and knew the Amiga from friends). Next, I check whether there is already sheet music available, for example on Musescore, or whether I have to arrange the piece myself.
For the Amiga songs I often work with MOD files in an MOD file tracker. If I have neither notes nor MODs, I often listen to the originals and then write the notes from what I hear. Of course, I also have a look at longplays to get an idea of the game. Occasionally I play one or two games on emulators (Vice, WinUAE, RetroArch) to get a feel for the gameplay."
Thank you very much, Grazia. We look forward to many more Amiga titles!

AROS: CAMD MIDI driver (update)
In our (German) news item on the release of version 1.0 of the multimedia MIDI sequencer BarsnPipes for Amiga OS4.1, Alfred Faust stated: "Before I made the OS4.1 FE version, I worked intensively on the AROS version. Unfortunately, AROS lacks a usable MIDI transfer. Without this, BarsnPipes is NOT usable. I had tried very hard to write a CAMD driver for USB MIDI transmission. Unfortunately, this did not lead to the success I had hoped for."
In a thread on AROS World, help was sought in this regard, which Franck 'hitchhikr' Charlet has now provided using his CAMD-MIDI driver under the title link.
Regarding the installtion he has written:
- Delete any file present in the devs:midi directory (probably just "debugdriver")
- Copy the file "mididriver" into devs:midi directory.
- Reboot.
In the archive there are two tools:
- "ShowClusters" will show the midi ports of the driver.
- "MidiWatch" will monitor a given port as argument (usually mididriver.in.0 or mididriver.out.0).
Update: (16.02.2024, 06:18, dr)
A new version is available on Franck 'hitchhikr' Charlet's website: it fixes a bug that caused AROS to crash. He has also added the shell commands MidiThru (forwards messages from one port to another) and MidiSendC (sends a middle C to a specific port).
Charlet also found out that there are two bugs in camdusbmidi.class.c that prevent the sending of multiple midi messages in the nParseMidiOut() function. A corrected version is now also included in the archive. The following must therefore be installed:
- Copy "mididriver" into devs:midi (and remove any file that may be there before).
- Replace "camdusbmidi.class" from SYS:Classes/USB with the one included in the archive.
- Reboot.

Blog: Well-known Secrets of AmigaDOS
As Carl Svenssons writes in his blog entry "Well-known Secrets of AmigaDOS", most consumer models of the Amiga series were shipped with heavily watered-down documentation. The Amiga 500 was an exception to this rule, but owners of later machines - such as the A1200 - may not have received any documentation for the command line portion of AmigaOS at all.
Furthermore, the normal end user had no access to the official developer documentation. His present essay is dedicated to hidden or even completely undocumented or unfinished features of AmigaDOS versions 2 and 3.

Terrain models: World Construction Set 2.031 (Emerald-Berta), AmigaOS 3 and AROS
As can be read in the history of the development of their software products, Gary Huber of Questar Productions recognized the potential of the graphics capabilities of the personal computers of the time in the late 1980s and began researching and developing software for his Amiga computer to combine 3D terrain data and landscape/vegetation information into a computer-generated synthetic 3D view with colored trees (coniferous and deciduous), ground cover patterns, sky and haze.
Other software companies had developed similar software for the Amiga, including VistaPro from Virtual Reality Labs and the "Scenery Generator" (later "Scenery Animator") from Naturalgfx and Panorama. All included a basic method of automatically placing one or more types of vegetation based on local terrain criteria, usually using elevation and slope. However, none of the available commercial tools could handle large, detailed regions, making them unusable for commercial and industrial terrain mapping.
In 1992, Huber began developing algorithms and programs to meet the requirements he had predicted. Originally written in an advanced BASIC language and later rewritten in C for speed reasons. Chris Hanson joined Questar and Huber and helped develop the user interface, language conversion, optimization and graphics. The result, announced in August 1994, was World Construction Set 1 (WCS) for the Amiga with a host of advanced features (and a name inspired by the popular Electronic Arts audio tool of the time, "Deluxe Music Construction Set"). WCS V1 extended the land cover and vegetation placement techniques of earlier software to include the placement of so-called "ecosystems".
WCS V2 (video) for the Amiga was released in late 1995, followed by a Windows version in January 1996. Version 2 introduced oceans with waves and reflections, DEM buildings, realistic looking clouds, sun and moon, better vegetation and OpenGL support.
Both versions 1.25 and 2.04 are available as packed ADF files on the 3DNature.com website. The corresponding source files were published on GitHub some nine years ago. Alexander Fritsch began working on the source files containing the penultimate version 2.03 ("Emerald") in 2017. As he tells us, the project first had to be made gcc-compatible. The aim of his new compilation using Bebbo's gcc was and is to achieve the highest possible speed. This required very extensive tests with various compiler options and lengthy test calculations on a real Amiga, always under the same boundary conditions. As Bebbo also continued to work on gcc, it had to be tested again and again to see whether a new compiler version with new optimizations would bring a speed advantage. Since WCS as a complex program is also a test case for the compiler itself, Alexander reports, WCS also revealed errors in the compiler over time, especially with various optimizations and floating point calculations.
As a result, the new version of WCS now available on Aminet on a 25MHz 68040 Amiga only needs 4 hours instead of 5 hours for a "Canyon Sunset" example image. A nice result that would not have been possible without Bebbo's work, as Alexander says, and his gcc. An AROS version is also included in the archive.

AmigaOS 4: AmiUpdate V2.53 (update 2)
AmiUpdate, the update programme for system components and programmes, was first updated to version 2.50 on 04/02/2024 and then, after some problems, to version 2.51. The changes:
AmiUpdate 2.50
- The http transfer routines did not consider a filename with spaces in it. All filenames
are now run through an encoder prior to the HTTP request being sent. This fixes issues like
the MUI update failing to download.
- update.library 53.19: Added more internal vectors.
- RebootDeamon 2.4:
- Reworked the source to avoid some duplication of code.
- Changed the timer.device handling to avoid memory leaks.
- Removed the pointless cancel button from the countdown requester.
- If update.library could not be loaded, it tried to open an intuition
requester for notification, but intuition had not been opened yet!
AmiUpdate 2.51
- Some internal changes, but nothing functional (unless I added some bugs, of course).
- It seems the http request headers did NOT include the version info in the User-Agent
field, which the server uses. I could have sworn it was included ages ago!
- Added better logging in the case of [405] errors.
- The status bar will now show correctly if no servers are selected.
- RebootDeamon 2.5: Seems there was a long standing bug which just popped up, which could lead to a crash
dealing with the time requests.
Update: (11.02.2024, 14:18, dr)
Meanwhile the author Simon Archer has released version 2.52, which currently cannot be downloaded from the program itself, but from "Downloads" under the title link. Many users had reported problems when they used the program iconified in the background. This now should be fixed. Changes:
- Unfortunately, trying to keep compatibility with OS 4.0 led to problems with the docky part
of application.library, as it always opens V2 of the library interface. As the program is
using the old V1 tags, this threw up an error reported by multiple users. As it is highly
unlikely anyone is still using 4.0, it should not be a problem a huge problem. My aplologies
to any 4.0 users, but now is the time to upgrade!.
- As the ongoing saga with connections to "amiupdate.net" is still ongoing, despite my best
efforts to resolve it, I have now added a simple NSLookup to AmiUpdate in order to put rest
to this issue once and for all. Accesses to "amiupdate.net" and "wwww.amiupdate.net" are now
registered on "my" lookup server and are now redirected to the correct place without any
intervention from the great wide internet.
Update 2: (13.02.2024, 22:01, dr)
And once again AmiUpdate has been updated, now to version 2.53. Users had tried to search for updates from within the prefs program, which caused errors. However, the new AmiUpdate V2.53 only updates the update prefs to version 53.17. The final version 53.18 can then be accessed via a separate update of the prefs program.

Blog: Modding the Amiga boot hand
Alexander Grupe recently discovered the Amiga start screen redesigned by AndroidArts on X and wondered whether the standard screen designed by Sheryl Knowles could actually be changed or replaced. In a current article on his website heckmeck! he shows that it works and how it works.

AROS x86: Update of ABI-v0 developer branch and Odyssey Web Browser
Press release: This new version 20220318-1 of AROS ABIv0 for 32-bit systems introduces updates to a few libraries as well as multiple bugixes. If you are a developer, please take note of switch to new C library and update your SDK installation. The download of binary packages and full changelog is available on GitHub.
Additionally, with this release the list of recommended hardware has been extended with two inexpensive motherboards: ASUS P8Z68V LX and Gigabyte GA-MA770T UD3P.
As a reminder, the above list includes hardware that is well supported, easily obtainable second hand, cheap and will be re-tested for each future release to maintain compatibility.
And to make things ever better, Odyssey Web Browser for 32-bit x86 AROS has also been refreshed. It was last released in 2016 and this new version 1.26 brings re-compilation with newer SDK and a number of bugfixes. It requires this release of AROS base system to work.
If you enjoy AROS and would like to get in touch with wider AROS community, be sure to visit new AROS community forum.
