  • The internal Startup.DM has been simplified and expanded.
  • Fix: The patterns for auto-commands were limited to 32 characters.
  • Fix: 'PrintDir' rewritten.
  • The minimal/default stacksize for 'Extern' is now 8192 bytes.
  • Filesystem-messages must now explicitly be activated with "SetX notify".

Amiga Forever 4.0
Amiga Forever is the all-in-one Amiga emulation and connectivity environment for PCs, officially licensed by Amiga International. We are pleased to announce the release of Amiga Forever 4.0. This new version includes version 3.1 of the Amiga ROM and OS files and AGA support under WinUAE. Additional pre-installed programs and features, like for example Personal Paint, DirectoryOpus 5.5, TurboText, drag-and-drop LhA de-archiving, and the ToolManager dock have been updated.

This version additionally includes an archive with a new, ready-to-run PowerMac version. This emulation is currently the only way of having an Amiga laptop (if we assume that you install it on a PC laptop or on a Mac Powerbook/iBook)

New features of Amiga Forever 4.0:
  • GlowIcon look (as used in Amiga OS 3.5, but also compatible with NewIcons and MagicWB)
  • Option to switch entire environment from "new look" (GlowIcons) to "old look" (Classic) and vice versa
  • Amiga Explorer 4.0 (includes revolutionary self-install over serial cable, plus new Cut, Copy, Paste functions)
  • Directory Opus 5.5 (courtesy of GPSoftware)

AGE and Metal Combat
AGE (Advanced Graphics Environment) is an AGA + game graphics library for Amos programmers, that we were working on a number of years ago. It's not complete, and it's not likely to be, so we've decided to release it as it is. Also, we've released our "Metal Combat" speed test engine and source for what was to be a simple A1200 Virtual Fighter clone, that we were working on in '95. Note it's NOT a game, just an engine demo, it was possible. We just could make the characters at that time. Maybe somebody else can do that today...

What is MorphOS?
David 'zapek' Gerber, one of the 'Vapor' programmers, explains in his .plans statement of today what MorphOS is. He clearly describes why MorphOS is far more than a simple 68k emulator. He makes clear that it's rather a full-blown operating system on its own, which fulfills all demands on a modern OS.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 We don't have a press release for perhaps the most important bit of
news in some time. This is the retirement of Petro Tyschtschenko. The
German office of Amiga will be closed by the end of the year. In our
opinion, there would be no Amiga at all if it weren't for Petro's
tireless promotion and work during the worst of the hiatus after the
death of Commodore. Whether his organization was called Amiga
Technologies, Amiga International GMBH, Amiga Germany or any other
name that might have been used, the heart and soul of our community
dwelt where Petro was for many years. We owe him a lot and we'll miss
him.

 Another item we didn't receive a press release for is the "ending" of
YAM, perhaps the most popular mailer ever for the Amiga computer. The
program's author, Marcel Beck, has decided to discontinue development.
He as released the source code through the GNU General Public License
though, so a future for this marvelous program is possible. We hope
someone picks it up and runs with it.

 Sometimes you just can't win for losing. Last month's issue went out
with a letter from a reader who was, rightly, unhappy about a
Microsoft ad on the top of AU. We pointed out the ad was placed there
by our free distribution service, e-Groups, which retains the right to
include any ads it chooses in return for providing its services free.
 Almost as if someone were having a joke at our expense, that issue
also went to you readers with the exact same ad included! Two months
in a row. I sincerely hope this issue arrives in your e-mail box with
something less irritating attached.
 The service we use is first rate, reliable, and as professional an
organization as we've ever worked with. This is the first time one of
their ads has caused such consternation, so we are not prepared to
abandon them. Since we have no control over these ads, and don't even
see them until after the issue is sent, it could easily happen again.
We hope it won't.

 Another feud in the Amiga Community is brewing, and again it involves
the very innovative company Elbox. We attempt to sort it out for you
in the feuders' own words below. It should be obvious to everyone we
don't need such things, regardless of the merits of anyone's position.
We'll try to keep you posted on developments in this tasteless mess.

 Innovation abounds in this issue. Read the very interesting proposal
from Bob Sharp, the force behind the Amiga 2K show in St. Louis, USA.
If you're involved with an Amiga club, there's a real treat in store
for you if you participate.

 Many interesting things for you this issue - we hope you enjoy it.

Hi Brad

 I was wondering if you have heard this one?? I have a 2000 with a GVP
060 with built in scsi. When I connect my syjet it hangs up something
fierce amd only by either shutting down the syjet or disconnecting the
cable will it release the buss. Also I can no longer do a warm reboot.
I have disabled all the wbstartup softeware in an attempy to fix this.
but to no avail. Any thoughts anyone?? Keep up the good work! Yours in
Amiga

Dan,
 That sounds like a miserable problem. This involves products I don't
have access to. Anyone out there have a answer for Dan?

Dear Amiga Family:

 I am writing this as I fly back from a wonderful two days at the ACE
2000 Amiga show in Melbourne, Australia. It was indeed a great delight
and pleasure to meet with all the wonderful members of the Amiga
Family Down Under, and I already look forward to my next opportunity
to visit Australia.

 I especially want to thank all the dealers, developers and end users
who attended the seminars and the hundreds of you who joined for the
banquet dinner. Amiga truly is a global family, and too much of an
unknown phenomena. It is the Amiga Family who has kept this amazing
system alive and growing.

 I would like to take a moment to recognize the efforts of two people
who especially made my stay in Australia an enjoyable and educational
experience. Jeff Rose, of Unitech, the d'Amiga distributor for
Australia, and Basil Flinter the Secretary of the Amiga Down Under
Group or ADUG. I want to thank them both for taking the extra time to
help me truly understand what Australia and New Zealand mean to Amiga,
and what Amiga can do to help our its Family Down Under. I can
certainly say that on my next trip I will take the time to also visit
New Zealand and say hello in person.

 Upcoming Products

 There are many exciting things happening with Amiga and I wanted to
tell the entire Amiga community what the attendees of ACE 2000 learned
at the show.

 Amiga will release an upgrade for the Classic AmigaOS! Version 3.9 of
the AmigaOS will be shipped and ready for the 2000 holiday season.
AmigaOS 3.9 is being developed in concert with Haage and Partner GmbH.
A new website devoted specifically to OS3.9 will be online shortly and
it will include an OS feature list and other bits of useful
information. OS 3.9 will be made available to classic Amiga users for
the affordable price of under $40.00 US. Watch our main website,
www.amiga.com, for more details of OS 3.9 and its new website.

 Because Amiga is still a Benevolent Dictatorship-and not a democracy
or even a republic-we listen closely to the feedback and input from
the community. Based on this feedback we strive to create products
that you want, need and enjoy.

 We are pleased to announce to the community the first in a series of
new hardware that has been designed by Amiga and soon manufactured by
Amiga OEM partners. The first in our AmigaONE series of products are
the AmigaONE PPC 1200, and the AmigaONE PPC 4000 cards from Eyetech.
These products will become available to developers in December this
year and are designed to meet the specific needs of the Amiga
Community. We have also announced another partner, bPlan GmbH, who are
creating a new AmigaONE PPC based desktop computer.

 More details will emerge shortly about bPlan, Eyetech and the new
AmigaONE products, so visit the AmigaONE web site at
www.amiga.com/products/one/pr.shtml to stay informed.

 I would also like to announce new versions of the Amiga SDK. AmigaSDK
version 1.1 will begin shipping on October 24, 2000. In addition to an
upgrade for the Linux version, we are please to release the Windows
version of the Amiga SDK as well.

 There was a mistake in the September 28 Executive Update. As
erroneously printed in the update, the Amiga SDK 1.1 does not include
the sound, UI, or 3D pieces. These will be found in version 1.2, which
itself will be released shortly. I am sorry for the error, but take
comfort in the fact that purchasers of an Amiga SDK receive free
updates and upgrades for 12 months from the date of purchase.

 Possible Amiga Community Investment Opportunity:

 Another announcement made in Melbourne was the possibility of a
Registration A filing for Amiga. Since the announcements of the Amiga
Inc. plan and strategy, we have continually received questions and
offers of investing in Amiga.

 We at Amiga have been trying to find ways to give something back for
all of your efforts and continued faith in what we are doing. We are
investigating a method where we can offer 10% of Amiga to the
community in a Registration A filing. We have not decided on whether
or not we are going to do this, but to date we have investigated many
opportunities and this looks to be a great option.

 We are investigating this in earnest, but before we continue down
this path much further we wanted to see what the community thought
about the idea. We have established an email address at
investor@amiga.com where members of the Amiga community can send us a
message with their interest. We are looking for no less than $250.00
US per investment. If you are interested please send an email message
along with the dollar amount that you would be interested in
investing.

 Each country has its own rules about Registration A filings, so you
should check with local authorities to learn what rules may apply to
each of you. As with any investment there is associated risk, and
before anyone decides to invest we encourage them to read the plan,
prospectus, and inherent risks involved with this offer if it is
eventually implemented.

 Closing

 It has been an amazing 10 months since we started Amiga Incorporated.
The community has seen the delivery of the Amiga SDK, an upgrade to
the SDK, an upgrade to the Classic AmigaOS, and now the announcement
of three PPC based AmigaONE products. We still have a long way to go
and many more battles to fight, but I am confident that with the
community behind us, and the enhancements to the product line
continuing, there is a long and exciting future for Amiga.

 To the user group members around the world, it is time to start
calling the members who have drifted away and let them know what is
happening with the new Amiga. We want them to know they can again be
part of continuing the legacy that is Amiga.

 Again thanks to Greg, and Michael, and the thousands of other Amigans
Down Under who made ACE 2000 such a great event.

Get Boinged!

To the Amiga Family:

 I write to you today with heavy heart, as I announce the passing of a
member of the Amiga family: Bob Cosby.

 Bob, or Coz as I often yelled it out, was always a smiling supportive
team member. Coz was always here to encourage and support the team and
our efforts.

 As frustrations would flare, or concerns arose Coz was there in the
middle of it helping to keep the sanity.

 It was Coz who was first to offer his opinions, and today the office
is quieter and we miss him very much.

 Coz was planning and bringing up his Harley, and he and I were
planning on a long ride through the mountains next year with our
wives.

 Well, Coz, I look forward to our ride another time.

 My prayers, and heart felt condolences go out to his wife and his
family.

 We at Amiga dedicate the AmigaOne to Coz.

 I would ask the members of the Amiga Family to pray for Marsha, his
wife, and always remember Coz.

Mr. Cosby - I miss you.

Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga team.

 Oct 30, 2000, Snoqualmie, WA - Amiga Inc., developer of multi-media,
multi-platform digital environments announced the release today of its
software development kit for Microsoft WindowsTM.

 The Amiga Software Developers Kit provides the initial tools and
examples for developers to create applications that can run on
desktops, information appliances, set top boxes, PDAs, and game
systems without modification. Amiga uses Virtual Processor (VP)
technology to erase the boundaries that separate different hardware
architectures. Once a program is written, the same binary will run on
every platform that Amiga supports. Software Developers running
Microsoft WindowsTM can focus on developing applications instead of
porting to different platforms.

 Amiga Digital Environment Graphical Interface running on Microsoft
Windows

 For developers, the new SDK creates a single environment that is
scalable from handheld devices such as cell phones to multiprocessor
servers. Current and future versions will enable compact, high
performance and robust media solutions to be used across a broad range
of devices using identical binary files. The New Amiga SDK is
available through local retailers for $99.00 and from the Amiga web
site.

 "Amiga is committed to delivering operating environments to a
plethora of platforms. The Amiga SDK for Windows is an opportunity to
deliver a development environment to a large community that creates
applications and for that community to deliver applications to
different markets with no additional development costs," said Amiga
Product Manager Matt Fontenot.

 "We are very excited to be able to add Windows developers to the
thousands of Linux developers already creating content for the new
Amiga," said Bill McEwen, CEO of Amiga.

 Amiga Digital Environment Command Line Interface running on Microsoft
Windows

 Amiga based applications can run directly on x86, PowerPC, M Core,
ARM, StrongARM, MIPS R3000, R4000, R5000, SH 3, SH4, and NEC V850
processors. The Amiga OS can run hosted on Linux, Embedded Linux,
Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, CE, QNX4, OS/9, and soon Palm, EPOC,
VxWorks, and others.

Amigans,

 We are requesting your assistance.

 Since the completion of the fantastic Amgia 2K show, in St. Louis
this last March 31st - April 2, I've hit upon an idea that will help
Amiga Clubs even more.

 To do this project properly, I need to acquire the names and
addresses of all the Amgia Clubs I can, including a contact person and
phone number where possible. I already have a good number, but I don't
want to miss anyone.

 I know this is a little work for you, but it will greatly help all
the Amiga Clubs, and I would certainly appreciate your assistance.

 So please take the time to fill in this note and email it back to me
with as many ACCURATE club names and information as you can. Please
fill it in as completely as possible.

To all of you who have helped so far, many thanks.

Send replies to bscharp@icon-stl.net

 This project involves placing each qualified club on a list to
receive the new Bounce-back Video tapes free of charge. The first tape
was of the Amiga 2K Banquet. The second tape was titled "Nova Design &
more!", This next tape will cover more of this summers Ami-West show
and information on SoftLogiks PageStream program. Sign your club up
and get on the list to receive the future tapes free.*

 These tapes are for Amiga Clubs to use as a demos at their meetings.
It is expensive to do this, so I ask my fellow Amigans to send only
real club information. Don't send for a tape just for yourself, or you
will deprive other Amigans the ability to receive one. I have a
limited number of tapes, and wish to get them into the hands of as
many clubs as possible. Each club will be contacted by phone before
tapes are mailed.

 We currently are distributing tapes to over 150 clubs in the U.S.A.
and Canada.

 * The tapes are currently only in NTSC, and only available for clubs
in the U.S.A. and Canada, but if you are outside of this area, please
keep in touch. We may expand in the future.

Elbox comments on AmigaONE 1200/4000

 A few days ago, Amiga Inc. proposed the direction, in which the Amiga
Classic computer line should evolve.

 This direction assumes the necessity of equipping Amiga Classic
computers with PCI-standard slots, the G3 or G4 processor with fast
SDRAM memory and a slot for a the Next Generation MATROX graphic card.

 In order to fully use the new AmigaDE system, Amiga Classic must be
fitted with several basic pieces of equipment.

 The AmigaONE 1200 idea assumes connection of this hardware directly
to the CPU expansion slot in Amiga 1200.

 We are really glad to inform all the owners of Amiga Classic
computers that this is exactly the way, for which Elbox was the
pathfinder in their designing and marketing of the MEDIATOR PCI 1200
busboard.

 The most important thing is the proper decision of following our path
and connecting the new busboard to the CPU slot in Amiga 1200 -- not
to local connectors in turbo cards. The latter would result in some
limitations (see our previous announcement of 21 Sep 2000).

MEDIATOR PCI vs. AmigaONE 1200/4000

The basic differences between AmigaONE 1200 and MEDIATOR PCI
1200 are as follows:

  AmigaONE 1200                    MEDIATOR PCI 1200

* connection to A1200 edge * connection to A1200 edge
  connector                        connector

* six PCI slots * four PCI slots

*       No                       * logic for supporting A1200
                                   68k & 68k/PPC turbo card

* logic to connect A1200 * logic to connect A1200
  motherboard                      motherboard

* No * five ZORRO II slots, one Video
                                   slot (with MEDIATOR ZIV
                                   & ZIV busboard)

* PowerPC G3/G4 processor        * PowerPC G3/G4 processor
  (on Macintosh-type card)         (on SharkPPC/SharkPPC+)

* two SDRAM sockets for * two SDRAM sockets for up to 1 GB
  up to 512 MB memory memory (on SharkPPC/SharkPPC+)

* one AGP slot * one AGP slot (on SharkPPC+)

* USB 1.0 & FastEthernet         * USB 2.0 & FastEthernet
  & UDMA/EIDE/ATAPI                & UDMA/EIDE/ATAPI
  (on custom PCI card) (on SharkPPC+)

 The basic shortcoming of the AmigaONE 1200 project is that its
designers will not implement logic for AmigaONE 1200 working with 68k
and 68k/PPC turbo cards. Such implementation would require expanding
AmigaONE 1200 logic and, most of all, its designers having knowledge
of the technical intricacies of the design of all the currently
available turbo cards.

 This means that AmigaONE 1200 in the Amiga Classic mode will provide
calculation capacity of the 68020 14 MHz processor at the most.

 MEDIATOR PCI 1200 has no such limitation.

 All types of Amiga turbo cards (in the Amiga Classic mode) can work
at full speed in connection with cards installed in MEDIATOR PCI 1200
slots.

 All the currently available Amiga software may be executed in the 68k
(or PPC) processor of any Amiga turbo card.

 In new applications to be developed, both accelerators in MEDIATOR
PCI (68k/PPC and SharkPPC) may enhance performance of each other just
the same way as it is done in advanced multi-processor systems. This
is due to the fact that processors in both accelerators work fully
simultaneously.

 In both solutions (MEDIATOR PCI 1200 and AmigaONE 1200), irrespective
of the Classic mode, running Amiga Classic programmes will also be
possible in the emulation mode in PowerPC G3 and G4 processors.

 The hardware compatibility from the side of G3/G4 processors in both
solutions guarantees that the entire range of software written for the
new AmigaDE operational system will work on MEDIATOR PCI.

 MEDIATOR technology, unlike other technologies-to-be, is NOW
available for you to have and enjoy.

 Now something special for A4000 users:

 As many of you already know, we are now in the final stage of work on
the MEDIATOR PCI 4000 card. Here is the comparison of capacities
offered by MEDIATOR PCI 4000 and AmigaONE 4000.

  AmigaONE 4000                    MEDIATOR PCI 4000

* connection to A4000D CPU * connection to A4000D Expansion

* six PCI slots * five PCI slots

* No * logic for supporting
                                   A4000 68k & 68k/PPC turbo card

* logic to connect A4000 * logic to connect A4000

15 November P96 "patch" VooDoo Mediator Drivers Not 'legal'

 There was a message posted on one of the Mediator mailing list from
the Main author of P96:

 "Hi, there is no Voodoo3 driver for Picasso96, because Elbox has
obviously created and actually _distributed_ one without any
permission from us. We will not support this driver in any way unless
Elbox legalizes this driver. Be prepared to have new Picasso96
releases that won't work at all with Mediator hardware installed.
Sorry, but we can not just let this happen... Regards, Alexander
Kneer." - I got 2 emails today from someone that had emailed the P96
authors and it says the same things.

 A quick look at the P96 homepage, on the Distribution page has the
following information:

 "Developing software for Picasso96 is free, development of Picasso96
hardware drivers is restricted to non-commercial projects, old
hardware or - if a licence is obtained from the authors - new hardware
products. We reserve the right to decide whether to provide support
for a certain project or not. Writing and issuing hardware drivers
without the written approval of the Picasso96 authors will not be
tolerated. Licensing Companies that want to sell graphics cards or
other products with Picasso96 as the core driver system must license
Picasso96 from: Kneer & Abt GbR. Masurenweg 6a D-89233 Neu-Ulm Germany
The licence fees are based on the complexity of the product and the
number of units sold. We request about 3 to 5 per cent of the retail
price with a minimum of about DM 10."

 1. The latest Elbox driver for the Voodoo3 chipset is a proprietary
and independent software solution written by Elbox programmers,
without any support or help on part of any outside team of
programmers, developers or companies.

 2. All legal rights for the Voodoo3 driver are property of Elbox
Computer company. Actually, P96 authors did not acquire rights for
this software (although our driver provides added value to P96, no
doubt). We are open to further negotiations.

 3. The Voodoo3 ver. 1.0 driver (available now for MEDIATOR PCI
registered users) is 100% compatible with the P96 graphic system.

 4. Elbox does not distribute P96 software, which is available from
other sources, e.g. from Amiga OS 3.5 CD-ROMs.

 5. P96 is shareware, paid by the users. Elbox provides expanded
capacities for P96 and as for now does not want to be paid for it from
P96 authors (the Voodoo3 driver is free for registered users of
MEDIATOR PCI).

 6. Development of Elbox Voodoo3 drivers will be continued and updated
and they will be made compatible with OTHER graphic systems, too.

 7. If the P96 authors team decide to try to make efforts to block
MEDIATOR operation with future P96 graphic system releases (strange
enough, as Elbox drivers indirectly helps P96 authors in their own
business...), Elbox will provide a completely NEW, modern and
expandable graphic system (soon...).

 8. Drivers for other graphic chipsets are under development now and
will be provided by Elbox.

 9. Support for all the drivers written by Elbox team of programmers
IS and will be provided by Elbox Computer.

 10. Every user of MEDIATOR, who wants to use any graphic card based
around a chipset supported by Elbox, will be free to choose which
graphic system to use... and then pay the appropriate shareware fee if
this is P96.

  FOR EVERY 'BAD NEWS' WE HAVE TEN GOOD NEWS.

 The AmigaOne 1200 & 4000, the Predator, GRex and Mediator boards - A
factual clarification of similarities and differences

For immediate release

 We believe that all of the above products - including the Mediator -
represent very worthwhile expansion options for Classic Amiga users.
However each of the above products has been designed to give the
Classic Amiga user specific and quite different expansion and forward
progression capabilities, and it is therefore important to note that
these different product lines are not functionally interchangeable and
the type selected should be carefully chosen with regard to the
Amiga's current and intended future use.

 This brief note is to highlight the differences in these product
lines by outlining the basic specifications of the Predator, G-Rex and
AmigaOne 1200/4000 products and how their design philosophy differs
both from each other and from the Mediator board from Elbox. For the
sake of clarification the summary information on the Mediator board
given here has been taken from public press releases and
advertisements published by Elbox over the past few months.

 Finally please note that we continue to refuse to get drawn into any
unprofessional and public arguments with Elbox over their reaction to
any products which are even vaguely competitive to their Mediator
design. There are however some misleading inaccuracies in their press
release of 30 October 2000 which this note will also help clear up.

 The AmigaOne 1200 & 4000 are 6xPCI + 1xAGP stand-alone G3/G4 boards
capable of running the Amiga DE directly (which is being ported to the
design by Amiga Inc). These boards are designed to fit in the most
popular A1200/A4000 tower systems, and optionally connect to the
A1200/A4000 motherboard for access to Classic Amiga chipset hardware.
In this mode the AmigaOne 1200/4000 can also be used to run the
Classic Amiga OS & software with a very high degree of compatibility -
because it has access to all the Classic Amiga custom chips.

 It is however of fundamental importance to note that the A1200/A4000
'computer' now resides on the AmigaOne board - having direct
high-speed access to all the AmigaOne's PCI/AGP peripherals, and only
accessing the existing A1200/A4000 chipset (via the A1200 edge
connector or the A4000 cpu connector) as and when required. Any
existing 680x0 or PPC accelerator is entirely redundant, its function
being carried out by the AmigaOne's G3/G4 cpu & memory. For this
reason the provision of a pass-through accelerator slot on either the
A1200 or A4000 version of the AmigaOne is completely pointless. In our
view a small cardboard box provides much more cost-effective storage
for an unused accelerator card than an expensive edge connector.

 For entirely hardware independent (retargetable) applications the
AmigaOne 1200/4000 hardware is capable of running them without an
A1200 or A4000 motherboard being attached at all.

 The Predator and GRex boards (which are of similar - but not
identical - design) add PCI (& AGP in the case of the Predator-Plus)
facilities to an Amiga 1200 or 4000 with a phase5/DCE design of PPC
(or Cyberstorm Mk3) accelerator. These boards use the phase5
accelerator's local bus (which is not itself a PCI bus) graphics card
connector to give a high speed interface between cpu and PCI/AGP
slots. This has been implemented by using a custom-designed
'northbridge' chip on the Predator itself. The Predator also makes use
of other logic on the accelerator to interface to the Amiga
motherboard's onboard chipset & peripherals.

 Using this local bus allows full linear addressing of the PCI/AGP
cards within the cpu's address space, and allows busmastering and DMA
to be implemented not just between PCI/AGP cards but between the cards
and the accelerator card's onboard memory. This design does not
require the use of any paging registers for data transfer between cpu
and PCI board, and removes any contention between the lower speed
A1200 edge connector bus (which is used exclusively for accessing the
Amiga's onboard peripherals and chipset resources) and the high speed
local bus (which is used exclusively for PCI/AGP access).

 In addition the Predator-Plus also has provisi on for an on-board
G3/G4 cpu and SDRAM memory to provide a user-installable PPC
accelerator uprade.

 Unlike the AmigaOne 1200/4000 the Predator and GRex boards need an
A1200/A4000 motherboard and appropriate BizzardPPC / CyberstormPPC /
Cyberstorm Mk3 accelerator installed to function.

 The Mediator board from Elbox, was, in our understanding, originally
designed to be a PCI-only replacement for the Zorro II-based Z4
busboard from Apollo, primarily to allow the use of low cost PCI
graphics cards in an A1200. As with the Predator & GRex boards above,
the Mediator was not designed to run the native Amiga DE.

 The Elbox design uses a bespoke paged memory mapper to allow
compatibility with all A1200 accelerators (providing they are fast
enough to drive the graphics card) and transfers all data - both to
the PCI and Amiga's on board peripherals/chipset resources - over the
A1200 edge connector bus. For its originally intended market (ie to
provide a towered A1200 with PCI sots) this is certainly a workable
option.

 Since the Eyetech's original Predator announcement in September 2000
Elbox have announced a variety of add-on/upgrade cards for the
Mediator, to - we understand - provide it with superficially similar
facilities to those embodied in the design of the Predator. However -
as we understand it - these upgrades will still rely on (paged) cpu
and memory access from the existing Amiga accelerator over the A1200
edge connector.

 Elbox have also recently announced an A4000 version of the Mediator
which, we understand, basically uses the same technology as the A1200
version but physically connects via the Zorro bus using the 8MB Zorro
II address space for a paged PCI memory interface.

 We hope this helps clear up the differences between these three
significant upgrade products for Classic Amiga computers.

SURVIVOR ORG. to take over the Amiga branch of CS&E

 After recent announcements by David Connolly, managing director of
Crystal Software and Electronics, that he will no longer be active in
the Amiga market, Survivor Org. has acquired the rights to past,
present and future Amiga games from CS&E. Managing director of
Survivor Org. is Dirk Harlaar.

 Currently the educational program Cosmos Fun Class is being finished
and translated into different languages, to reach an audience larger
than only the English speaking world. On the final CD there will also
be some "bonusses" by the develloper of Cosmos Fun Class.

 Survivor Org. will focus on Amiga games only, although PC conversions
may appear on "multi format" CD's, in cooperation with CS&E. Multi
format CD's (with PC and Amiga versions of the same game) have the
benefit that they wouldn't have to cost as much as Amiga only games,
since the profit on the PC-platform is just that little bit higher
than on the Amiga market. It also has the added bonus for our
customers, that they only have to buy a game once, and will be able to
play it on their Amiga at home, and the PC in the office (don't do
this when your boss is watching you!). In these first days of running
this business, I got the rights to two conversions of PC-games, and am
negotiating a third game. Details are still sketchy at the moment, but
I will keep you all informed about it when we have more solid
information.

All the best,

-------------
Dirk Harlaar
Managing Director
Survivor Org.

 {The following announcement was made by David Connolly of CS&E on
October 28. Brad.}

 Dear friends, maintaining a commercial business in the Amiga market
has become increasingly difficult. I don't just mean in terms of the
poor sales, but in terms of maintaining professional communication and
business relationships. I don't feel I am able to offer a truly
professional service for the Amiga as I have failed on both these
counts. I have made inproper comments on mailing lists and failed to
attract developers to sign for CS&E.

 As I have made the announcement before that CS&E would leave the
classic Amiga but come back for the next generation, it is with regret
that I have to say this time the company is leaving the Amiga to
concentrate on the PC development.

 Amiga Survivor will be continuing as a non-profit making magazine
through the editorial staff but CS&E will continue to lend a hand in
taking orders. I wish the Amiga all the best and will be keeping a
very close eye on all the developments as an eager customer."

 Hyperion Entertainment and Titan Computer are pleased to announce
that they will be bringing Cyberlore Studios' critically acclaimed God
sim "Majesty: the Fantasy Kingdom Sim" to the Amiga.

 MajestyTM is a unique sim putting you in the crushed velvet hotseat
of your own kingdom. With an epic quest before you, you make the
decisions of where to build your settlement's guilds and temples. From
these you recruit a varied cast of larger-than-life heroes. Each one
has a mind of his own and must be enticed to meet your goals, via
rewards you offer and spells you cast. Meanwhile you must make sure
that your treasury stays flush with cash to support these and other
outlays necessary to maintain a thriving medieval town. The fact that
you are being barraged by attacks from mythical beasts and fantastic
creatures doesn't make your job any easier.

 "We are very excited by the prospect of bringing such an outstanding
God sim to the Amiga, the machine where the genre was born all these
years ago with Populous", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of
Hyperion Entertainment. "The people at Cyberlore Studios have been
very cooperative and our partners at Tribsoft, who are handling the
Linux version, have been instrumental in making the Amiga port happen.
We promised to expand on the genres we were offering to Amiga users
and here we are."

 Majesty will be published for Amiga and Linux by Titan Computer and
is slated for release in early Q1 of 2001. A PPC equipped Amiga
(supported through WarpOS), at least 48 MB of memory, a graphics-card
and around 300MB of harddrive space will be required. The possibility
of a 68060 and AGA version is under review.

 Majesty is a trademark of Cyberlore Studios. All other trademarks and
tradenames belong to their respective owners.

New beta-version 18.6 beta 3 of NListtree
I eliminated some bugs and included some new features:

  • The attributes MUIA_NListtree_DropType, MUIA_NListtree_DropTarget, and MUIA_NListtree_DropTargetPos are new.
  • MinLineHeight is only set if the image is higher as the actual minimum.
  • The computer crashed down if you tried to delete entries in a Next/PrevSelected-Loop. Removed.
  • Added the following flags: MUIV_NListtree_FindName_Flag_Reverse and MUIV_NListtree_FindName_Flag_StartNode.
  • Added Italic catalog. Thanks to Andrea Zanellato for his translation.
  • Included test of zero pointer in the intern Construct/Destruct-Hooks.
  • Included MUIV_NListtree_Remove_TreeNode_Selected.

Cinemaware publishes "Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown"
A well-known game is to start its comeback on Playstation 2, Microsofts X-Box, and Windows-PC. Cinemaware will publish "Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown" in spring of 2002. The game bases on the classical game "Defender of the Crown" from 1986. In all the mix of strategy and action was sold over one million times on several platforms as on Amiga, too. The revised version is set to the time of the "Avenger of the disinherited ones". You have to release England from the clutches of the villain prince John. In a mail one of the responsible persons said that the game possibly will be ported to AmigaPPC if there is enough interest.

Notes:
Because we are moving to another server at this time not all of the areas are working, yet. For the time being we completely disabled the interactive part of amiga-news.de for easier fault finding. Unfortunately currently the newsticker and mailing lists are not working, too.

Supplement 16 Nov 2000:
Unfortunately the new server appears to have a hardware defect. Because of that we are moving again. We are hoping that amiga-news.de will be reachable again within one or two days. Please, wish us luck :-)

Individual Computers - News
Here the headlines:

  • X-Surf revised
    Since two weeks, a revised version of the X-Surf ethernet board is shipping.
  • Buddha Flash Gold Edition with 32k Flash
    Because of the Euro currency being continously weak against the US Dollar, the size of the flash memory on the Buddha Flash controller had to be reduced to 32K.
  • ISDN-Surfer gamma-test starting in week 46
    During the week from November 13th to 17th, the gamma-test of the ISDN-Surfer will start. For this test, we're looking for Amiga users with very special setups and ISDN phone lines that are NOT provided by Germany's Deutsche Telekom.
  • Repulse sound board will be produced by individual Computers
    After long negotiations, the contract with Aliendesign, the team that has developed the Repulse, has been finished. If we can collect enough pre-orders this month, production may even start this year.

More details at the title link.

New Company: SurvivorOrg
«After the recent news of Crystal Software and Electronics (CS&E) leaving the Amiga market, and the following news that Dirk Harlaar would be the new managing director of CS&E, this news has to be rectified once again. Managing director of CS&E, David Connolly, has decided to stay managing director of his company. However, CS&E will no longer be active in the Amiga market. A new company has been founded, Survivor Org., which has gotten the rights to any Amiga publications CS&E had. Managing director of this company is Dirk Harlaar. (And this is the final, true news). Survivor Org. will focus on Amiga software, and we hope to bring you more news about forthcoming releases soon. Please understand that this new company is still in the very early days. We do have some games signed up already, but it is much to early to say anything about them yet. Cosmos Fun Class, the educational program that "came with the inventory of CS&E" will be released shortly by Survivor Org.»

AmigaWriter-Import Filter for Pagestream
Ruediger Hanke has uploaded version 0.9 of his AmigaWriter-import filter to the web. The filter loads documents of AmigaWriter version 1.0-2.20 to PageStream. For instance it makes possible:
  • printing documents of AmigaWriter to PostScript
  • exporting documents of AmigaWriter to PDF
  • using AmigaWriter as WYSIWYG-replacement for PageLiner

You can find a detailed list in the section "Technical Notes" which elements of documents of AmigaWriter can be imported and which cannot, and how conflicts resulting from the different implementation of some features in AW and PGS can be solved. For more information, a screenshot and for downloading please have a look at the title link.

Rainer Benda has taken off all Kickstart- and Workbench-disks from his website by order of Amiga Inc. The Amiga-Workbench-disks, -Kickstart-files as well as ROM`s and utility-disks among other files. These files were only meant for support and were only allowed to be downloaded to supply some newer versions of C=`s software or if a disk was faulty. Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 The biggest news in quite a while is the annoucement of the
specifications for the new Amiga One computer at the Alternative
Computing Expo in Australia. This REALLY marks the beginning of the
next generation Amiga! There's a lot of interesting reading in the
announcement. We think you'll find it fascinating. And what's this
about Classic Amiga OS 3.9 ?!?
 The "smallest" news is that we seem to have new unprofessional feuds
in the Amiga community. One involves Elbox (you'll recall we carried a
complaint from them last issue) and a particular developer about
Voodoo. The other is between APC&TPC and UK Epic. We don't know who's
right or who's wrong, or who forced who to go public, but we DO know
this is not a matter for public fighting. By contrast, at the present
time two of the highest value companies in the US market also are
feuding, at what might be a personal level involving CEOs. This feud
has already involved many millions of dollars. Just about nobody
outside of the companies is aware of this. Why? Because the people
involved are true business professionals.
 We report the "good stuff", we report the "bad stuff", - and will try
to be even handed, so if anyone involved in this silliness thinks
they've not been given equal time, please contact us. Please note that
everyone involved has "good stuff" to contribute if they wish to.
 The Community will build on the good stuff.

Brad & company,

 I realize that everyone is exploring new ways to market and sell and
get paid. However, the following eGroups ad was atop the recent AU:

-------------------------- eGroups Sponsor -------------------------
Your family still won't know what you do. At least they'll know where.
The resources, brainpower & breadth of opportunities at Microsoft are
unmatched. The only question is are you ready for that kind of impact?
http://click.egroups.com/1/9223/5/573261969761703
---------------------------------------------------------------------

 I at first thought that it was a bad joke, but then decided maybe it
was just bad luck. So I figured, OK, I'll support AU by clicking on
it. My company firewall responded with, "Access to NON-BUSINESS chat
site BLOCKED. " Which no doubt rung a little bell in the head demon's
office of our network sysadmin, as I was checking it out during a
break at work.

 So now I will finish with, No $*)(&#! Thanks, and watch your
advertisers a little bit more carefully. No need to shoot our own
market in the foot while trying to come out ahead.

Paul
~~~~~~
Paul,
 You second thought was the correct thought - it was bad luck. That ad
was put on the top of AU (issue 000923) by e-groups during
transmission through their system. By agreeing to let them put ads on
the mailings, we get their services for free. We don't even see the
ads, and have no knowledge of what specific ad will be used, until
after the mailings go out.
 This particular ad was very aggravating to us, but we had no way of
knowing it was going to happen.
 Given that AU is totally free and has no income, we're not in a
position to pay e-groups the fee to eliminate all ads. The potential
for this to happen again exists. Best way to handle it is probably to
just ignore it. But it isn't easy.
 Last issue we had a question from Dave regarding Castlewood's Orb
drive. Below are two answers we received from readers, one each for
IDE and SCSI versions of the drive.
 Thanks to our readers for being so responsive!
Hello Dave,
On 28 Aug 2000 you wrote:
 I purchased the IDE version of the ORB drive several months ago.
Unfortunately, I have not had very good luck with it. First of all,
the write speed is much lower than the read speed. It seems to read
data at a speed comparable to IDE hard drives. It writes data at less
than half that speed. I only use the ORB drive for system backup and
it takes a long time to do a backup.
 I am also unable to exchange cartridges without rebooting. When I
load a new cartridge and issue a diskchange command, the system just
hangs up. I previously used a Syquest 105MB cartridge drive (IDE) and
was able to exchange disks at will.
 Also, the drive makes a lot of noise. My old Syquest drive made about
the same noise as a hard drive. The ORB makes a loud, several second
long, clicking noise every 15 to 20 seconds. Since I only use the
drive for backup, I began booting without a cartridge installed which
eliminates the constant sounds. I can later insert a cartridge and
mount it with the OS 3.5 Mounter tool if I need to use the drive.
 Reliability has been a problem for me too. I use the drive very
little; only about twice a month for backup. About a month after
purchasing the ORB drive it suddenly stopped working. When I booted
the computer the drive would flash a red error code and would not
mount. Castlewood was very responsive though, and I was able to send
the drive back to them for an exchange. Yesterday, I got a write error
while trying to do a backup. I could read the data that was already on
the drive, but was unable to write new data. When I tried to reformat
the drive I got another flashing red error code. I tried another
cartridge and got the same result. I haven't had time to contact
CastleWood yet, to see if they will repair or replace the drive.
 I would like to state for the record that my experience is with one
Castlewood ORB drive and is probably not representative of the quality
of all their drives. I have had Email contact with several users who
have the SCSI version of the drive and are happy with the ORB drive. I
have not heard from anyone else with the IDE version.
Jeff
Brad,
 With regards to Dave's request for info on an Orb drive, I am using
one with my Amigas. I connect it to a 2000 with a Blizzard 2060 board,
a 3000 with the built in Amiga SCSI controller, and a PC with an
Adaptec controller by just switching the cable to whichever computer I
want to use it with. It works just fine with the Amigas; they just
think it is another removable drive like a SyJet or Syquest (ho hum).
The PC had to have drivers installed, of course, and to use it with
Drive Image on the PC, I had to do some more gyrations, but the Amigas
just use it, as expected. I HAVE found that the Orb drives are
sometimes sensitive to SCSI IDs and bus placements, particularly on
the Mac, but with the Amiga it is pretty foolproof. Haven't gotten it
to work with the Video Toaster Flyer yet, but am working on that. I
think that is a termination problem.
 Just connect it up with the SCSI ID set right and the correct
termination, and format the disk. No sweat (other than the usual OS
3.5 problems).
    T H E   A M I G A   O N E   I S   A N N O U N C E D   I N   O Z
 October 21, 2000, Melbourne, Australia - It is with great pleasure
that we are able to announce the first new Amiga hardware in over 6
years. The AmigaOne, our first consumer product, will be targeted at
the desktop and workstation market. Further products to follow will
cover the markets from Personal Digital Assistants and upwards. All
these products will run a single piece of software, the revolutionary
Amiga Digital Environment (DE).
 We completed the AmigaOne specification three months ago, and dubbed
it the "zico". It is a specification and not a product because Amiga
is a software company, not a hardware manufacturer. The ability of the
Amiga DE to host itself on multiple hardware and operating system
platforms frees us from hardware dependency and gives our partners and
our customers the freedom to chose the hardware that best suits their
needs and tastes.
The zico specification is as follows;
- One AmigaDE friendly host processor (PPC, x86, Arm, SH4, MIPS)
- 64MB+ memory
- Next Generation Matrox graphics card
- Creative EMU10K1 based audio card
- 10 GB+ HD
- CD/DVD
- USB 1.0
- Firewire
- 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
- 56k modem
- Spare PCI slots for expandibility
 With the completion of the specification stage of the Amiga One, we
contacted several respected hardware companies with a view to
selecting partners who would be interested in creating AmigaOne
products.
 The AmigaOne process involves close co-operation between Amiga and
our partners' hardware groups, the running of the AmigaDE on the
hardware, and a thorough quality certification of the final product.
Only then can the product be called an AmigaOne.
 Whilst still in detailed negotiation with several companies, we are
delighted to announce the first partner company and its initial set of
AmigaOne products.
 The Eyetech Group Ltd, of Stokesley, U.K. already has an excellent
reputation in the Amiga community. They have done much to keep the
classic Amiga alive during the last five years, and we feel that in
the creation of the first new Amiga machines and the transitioning
>from the classic to the next wave, that experience will prove
invaluable.
 Bill McEwen President of Amiga Inc commented: "This arrangement
builds on and extends our existing partnership agreement with Eyetech,
first announced in April of this year. Our experience during this
period has shown Eyetech to be a no-nonsense company capable of
delivering what they promise on time and this consideration also
weighed heavily in our choice of a hardware partner for the PPC based
AmigaOne."
 Alan Redhouse, Managing Director of UK-based Eyetech, said; "I am
delighted that we have been able to build on our existing partnership
with Amiga and continue our close working relationship with them on
both a technical and manufacturing level. Our decade of Amiga
experience, plus our hardware and software efforts to push the Amiga
forwards means that we are able to work with Amiga to deliver a proven
upgrade solution to Amiga users which gives their existing 'Classic'
applications an immediate and substantial performance boost whilst
providing full forward compatibility with the new Amiga DE. Our work
on the Predator line of boards means that we can help Amiga to fulfill
its requirement of maximising the investment of the current community
as it moves forwards."
 Fleecy Moss, Chief Technology Officer, Amiga Inc added: "After talks
with the hardware development staff of several companies I am
convinced that working with Eyetech will allow us to offer an elegant
solution that gives both an excellent level of backward compatibility
and a powerful basis for the new Amiga Digital Environment. Top of our
requirements list was to ensure that those Amigans who have spent
considerable money in staying with the Amiga would not be left out in
the cold. Whilst you can't please all of the people all of the time,
we think we have come up with a set of products and solutions that
will put a smile on as many faces as possible."
 Eyetech is focusing on an immediate need in the existing Amiga
market. Many have already invested considerable resources in their
classic Amigas, both in terms of hardware and in terms of software.
Whilst keen to move forwards with the AmigaOne, they also want to
maximise their investment in the classic platform.
 The Eyetech AmigaOne PPC 1200 is a custom board which uses Eyetech
Predator technology with the "zico" specification to provide a perfect
synergy of classic and next generation. It provides all the
functionality of the standalone AmigaOne PPC, but has been extended to
mate with a classic Amiga A1200. This allows customers who have a
serious investment in the classic Amiga to continue to use their
machines whilst also having a brand new Amiga at their disposal. The
68k processor in the A1200 will be emulated at a substantially
increased level via the PPC processor on the AmigaOne, whilst the
classic operating system can take advantage of the AmigaOne's next
generation hardware resources.
 The AmigaOne PPC 4000 machine is similarly designed to allow
customers who have a significant investment in their classic Amiga
A4000 to be able to move that investment forwards whilst also
benefiting from the next generation capabilities of the AmigaOne.
 The Eyetech AmigaOne PPC 1200 will be available as an upgrade for
owners of towered A1200 computers, the Eyetech AmigaOne PPC 4000 as an
upgrade for Amiga 4000 desktop computers in tower conversion cases.
Options for producing AmigaOne PPC upgrade designs for other Classic
Amiga designs (such as the A3000 and Amiga International A4000T) will
be looked at (subject to demand) once the A1200 and A4000 products are
released.
 In order to implement all the features of the AmigaOne specification
the, A1200 and A4000 upgrade versions will feature one AGP and six PCI
slots, a user-upgradable G3/G4 (Macintosh-type) cpu slot, up to 512MB
SDRAM and a high speed IDE/ATAPI interface. The system will be
dual-bootable both into the Amiga DE and into Classic Amiga Workbench.
This latter feature will allow purchasers to have the performance
benefits of full G3/G4 cpu speeds and 512MB of SDRAM memory whilst
running Classic Amiga software. Both these boards are scheduled to
ship in 1Q01, with developer versions being available in December
2000.
 Design of both the Eyetech AmigaOne PPC A1200 and A4000 products has
been done with great sensitivity to the existing user and developer
community.
 "By releasing the classic compatible AmigaOne PPC products first,"
said Alan Redhouse. "We are providing a transitional path forwards for
the existing community, enabling them to maximise their current
investment whilst also leaping ahead with the new Amiga DE."
 In order to facilitate this transition, the classic Amiga operating
system will see its lifeline extended. OS3.9, to be launched before
Christmas will add a raft of new features and functionality, and will
be able to run on the Eyetech AmigaOne PPC classic products.
 Eyetech are also keen to talk to existing hardware manufacturers
about possibilities for licencing, manufacturer and other co-operation
in order to ensure a smooth transition of the existing Amiga community
from the present to the future.
 Amiga is also very close to signing up partners for a standalone
AmigaOne machine. The ATX form factor AmigaOne has been designed to
run the full consumer version of the Amiga Digital Environment (DE)
allowing the best of the Classic Amiga software which has been ported
to run directly under the Amiga DE, and the use of a wide range of
Amiga DE-based digital content - such as productivity software,
content creation suites, development environments and 3-D games - to
be used 'out of the box'.
 All this work - including extensive testing of hardware and software
components - is scheduled to be complete in time for end user
deliveries 3Q01. Amiga Inc is currently in negotiation with several
potential partner companies for the development and manufacture of the
stand-alone AmigaOne and its related digital content/software.
Companies interested in producing this version, utilising the PPC
processor family include Eyetech, and bplan GmbH of Germany. We hope
to have announcements to make on this within the next few weeks. Other
companies and other processors are also under negotiation.
 A new website is being set up, specifically to provide a focal point
for news, questions, comment and discussion on the AmigaOne, and we
encourage people to visit it and participate.
Executive Update
Greetings to one and all.
 I know it has been a long time since I last had the chance to write
to all to all of you.
 It has been very, very busy, and we have seen some great successes,
and some disappointments. I have not been asleep, and to the contrary
I have not been getting much sleep of late. There is so much activity,
and so little time that I have been spending a great deal of time in
other areas and not keeping everyone up to date.
 To my Friends in Italy, I apologize that I was not able to attend the
show. It was a real disappointment for me personally, as I wanted to
greet each and every one of you. The reason was not because we are
broke, or out of money as the rumors would state.
 Simply, there were two companies in California that I have been
working with, and they requested a meeting that occurred over the same
period of time. With working with these OEM's we will be able to add
several million more Amigans, and the discussions went well and are
progressing quickly, these meetings were in addition to what is
mentioned in point 3 below.
 Now with all the above fun stuff......
Here we go:
 1. The SDK for Amiga DE.
 This has been very exciting, and we are really pleased with the
number of applications and the number developers using the product to
create some great products.
 The next version of the Software Development Kit will be out in the
next couple of weeks. In addition to the Linux version there is now a
version available for Windows. That's correct you are now able to
develop for the new Amiga on either Linux, or Windows.
 It will feature a new raft of multimedia (Mesa, the SSEYO Koan Audio
Engine, streaming) as well better development tools, a richer AVE and
enhanced performance.
 2. Amiga OS 3.5 and beyond
 We are continuing taking a very hard look at the current Amiga and
how we can best move the platform forward. There are discussions on
going for some new opportunities and we will be able to share some
announcements in the very near future.
 3. Amiga DE business opportunities. Wow, this is an area that is
absolutely exploding. For developers this is going to be great news.
Not only will the applications you are working on be used by your
Amiga family members, but with the deals that are either executed or
in motion there will be millions more consumers joining the Amiga
family.
 Now many of you began to speculate on the Meternet announcement.
Meternet is offering a great product, and they are going to be making
it available to the Amiga community, but it is not the AmigaOne.
 4. The AmigaOne.
 We have listened to a great many of you with comments, suggestions,
business ideas and technical ideas. Dean Brown has been a huge help,
especially that he is now here in Snoqualmie with the other members of
the team.
 Because of this input we have begun negotiations for a brand new
design. Most of the details have been worked out, and I hope to have
the finished announcement ready by the middle of October. It is my
firm belief that you will all be very pleased and excited.
 5. Dealers/Distributors, and our friends in the Press:
 The well of information for all of you has been too dry, and
inconsistent. To better provide information to each and every one of
you.
Amiga has created two new mailing lists. Please go to:
 http://www.amigadev.net/index.php?sid=&subpage=home&function=showmail
lists or to www.amigadev.com and select mailing lists on the right
hand side of the screen. Select either press or dealer, and fill out
your information. We will begin weekly feeds to these lists to better
support our press and dealers.
 I know that many of you will read that this letter says nothing, and
that there is nothing happening, other than a new motorcycle for me.
 Well you are very wrong. We are meeting directly with the heads of
some of the largest computer and consumer electronics companies in the
world, and not only do they see the value in what we are offering but
they see where the Amiga community, you, is the real value.
 Now we still have a ways to go, but we are moving very fast, and I
know that you will all be very proud of Amiga as we continue to make
things happen.
 The biggest challenge for Amiga right now is to stay focused on our
core strengths, and not make the mistakes of those who have walked
before us.
 The Amiga opportunity is huge, and sometimes overwhelming. There are
so many conflicting reports, and I have not done a very good job of
being able to communicate to all of you as well as I would like to.
 We are getting much closer every day, and everyone of you are a major
part of the Amiga Family's success.
Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team
 I beg to inform you about the following:
 APC&TCP has just one single distributor: GTI
 Epic Marketing UK (not Epic Germany!!) hasn't been our English
distributor for a long time and hasn't been supplied by us with
anything. Epic UK does also not receive any legal software from our
company by other middlemen. Epic UK should not have one single product
of APC&TCP in their stock after a whole year (products which haven't
been payed for anyway), so they can't offer nor sale any of our
products. If this should be the case anyway - well, it should be clear
enough what exactly is sold there :(
Krakow, 12 October 2000
 ELBOX COMPUTER is proud to announce the breath-taking new product:
the most powerful PowerPC accelerator for Amiga 1200, 3000 and 4000.
 The new accelerator - SharkPPC G3/G4 board - is a pure PowerPC-based
processor card to be fitted in MEDIATOR PCI A1200 and MEDIATOR PCI
A3/4000 busboards.
 SharkPPC G3/G4 cards give Amiga Classic computers the top performance
of the latest PowerPC technology and the power of the long-awaited
next generation computer.
 New PowerPC750 processors installed in SharkPPC G3/G4 cards offer the
following performance: 17.4SPECint95@400MHz, 11.7SPECfp95@400MHz,
928DMIPS@400MHz, 22.4SPECint95@550MHz, 13.3SPECfp95@550MHz,
1276DMIPS@550MHz.
 The SharkPPC G3/G4 design combines speed of PowerPC G3/G4 processors
with extremely fast on-board memory interface controlling two SDRAM
modules, up to 512MB each. The peak memory transfer rate reaches
582MB/s. The accelerator card takes control over the PCI busboard with
a 66MHz PCI 2.1 compliant interface fitted with a two-channel DMA
controller.
 Communication between the existing Amiga turbo accelerator and the
SharkPPC G3/G4 card is executed with the shared SDRAM memory and the
interrupt controller in the MEDIATOR PCI hardware. The new accelerator
offers excellent bandwidth to any PCI card: 264 MB/s (132 MB/s in the
system with 33 MHz PCI cards). This powerful performance in PCI
graphic cards enables development of new superb games/graphic
applications in the native PPC code.
 All the currently available Amiga software may be executed in the 68k
processor with full use of all the PCI cards installed in the
computer. It is possible because both accelerator cards installed in
the computer access all the PCI cards independently.
 On top of that, in new applications to be developed both accelerators
may enhance performance of each other just the same way as it is done
in advanced multi-processor systems. This is due to the fact that
processors in both accelerators (68k/PPC and SharkPPC) work fully
simultaneously, which is for the first time available for Amiga users.
 The first SharkPPC G3/G4 cards for developers will be available by
end of November, with production planned to commence in January 2001.
 When new speed versions of PowerPC processors are available, the
SharkPPC line will be expanded with more models.
 The suggested retail price (VAT excl.) for the SharkPPC G3/G4
accelerators are:
SharkPPC G3/G4 750@400................ EUR 390.00
(PowerPC750@400MHz and 256KB@400MHz L2 Cache)
SharkPPC G3/G4 750@550................ EUR 520.00
(PowerPC750@550MHz and 256KB@550MHz L2 Cache)
 Pricing of versions with other processors will be announced
separately.
NEW
Please look for our further releases:
 1. Development progress of PCI Sound and TV card drivers for MEDIATOR
PCI 1200.
 2. MEDIATOR development line (A4000 and A3000).
        DCE gets exclusive rights to publish Voodoo CGX drivers
 Oberhausen, Friday 13th October 2000
 Today, Vision Factory Development (VFD) and DCE Computer Service
 signed an exclusive contract about the use of current "CGX
 Voodoo"-Drivers. In contrast to earlier announcements , this driver
 will be exclusively available for the G-REX PCI expansion only.
 This contract guarantees the immediate availability and the best
 support a user can get for the current range of powerful voodoo
 graphics boards in conjunction with all currently available ppc
 accelerators of the Blizzard- and CyberStorm series.
 With the expected problems of PPC 3D drivers in conjunction with
 Mediator PCI and the currently available PPC accelerators in Dual-CPU
 mode (68K 2D driver) in mind, VFD decided to drop the further
 development of the actual Alpha Voodoo drivers for Mediator and
 concentrates on development for the G-REX PCI board because drivers
 were succesfully tested already.
 Voodoo3 cards should give you a significant performance boost for the
 current range of PPC accelerated games, flawless working of the
 CyberGraphX driver can't be guaranteed due to technical hardware
 limitations of Mediator PCI though, so VFD decided to go that way.
 As a final note, CGX Voodoo driver alpha versions that are probably
 develivered with the Mediator hardware are in no way authorized or
 licensed by VFD. Current S3 ViRGE drivers are not affected by this
 agreement.
 DCE and VFD also decided to work together on additional drivers
 regarding both networking and sound in conjunction with G-REX PCI.
On Saturday, 14 Oct 2000
 community of Amiga users were informed that an agreement was signed
by virtue of which Mr. Frank Mariak (Vision Factory Development)
transferred exclusive rights to Voodoo PCI drivers written by himself
to a third party.
 We, ELBOX Computer, feel obliged to make the entire situation clear
to Amiga users world-wide, as the circumstances around this event are
twisted again and again and give false image of the situation to
public opinion.
 Please find the below report as the clarification of what has been
transpiring in the recent weeks behind the scenes.
Background
 On 24 July 2000, Elbox Computer and Vision Factory Development
jointly released an announcement on concluding an agreement, by virtue
of which VFD undertook to develop support for PCI graphic cards
installed in the MEDIATOR PCI busboard. (See
http://www.vgr.com/mediator/pressrelease1.txt )
 Before this agreement was concluded, both parties negotiated and
finally decided on some specific terms and conditions of co-operation
as follows:
 The key point of the agreement was that support for PCI graphic
 cards in CGX3 was to be devoid of hardware acceleration, which
 was to be fully developed in the CGX4 commercial version.
 The parties decided to make the following commitments:
1. ELBOX Computer shall make the developer's documentation for
   the MEDIATOR PCI busboard available in order to complete the
   agreed work.
      The developer's documentation was transferred to
      Mr. Frank Mariak on 14 July 2000.
2. ELBOX Computer will provide Vision Factor Development with
   computer hardware for preparing drivers for PCI graphic cards
   installed in the MEDIATOR PCI 1200 busboard, which Mr. Mariak
   needed at that time.
      ELBOX Computer sent the hardware: Amiga 1200 in E/BOX tower
      with the developer's MEDIATOR PCI 1200 busboard, 1240 turbo
      card, FastATA 1200 controller, a hard disk and other necessary
      add-ons as well as S3 ViRGE and Voodoo3 PCI cards to
      Mr. Frank Mariak on 07 Aug 2000. Another computer hardware
      set was delivered to VFD team last week.
3. Vision Factory Development shall develop support for graphic
   cards operating in the MEDIATOR PCI busboard. Support for
   S3 ViRGE and Voodoo3 chipsets was agreed upon as the minimum.
      S3 Virge:
      ELBOX Computer received a test version of an S3 ViRGE card
      driver (enabling starting Workbench in the S3 ViRGE PCI card)
      from Vision Factory Development on 18 July 2000;
      S3 ViRGE drivers are currently available.
      Voodoo3:
      ELBOX Computer received a test version of Voodoo3 drivers
      for MEDIATOR PCI for presentation purposes (allowing for
      operation with Workbench) on 29 Sep 2000.
4. ELBOX Computer, after starting the production of the MEDIATOR PCI
   busboard shall deliver a bundled free package of CyberGraphX v.3
   along with drivers for all the currently supported PCI graphic
   cards.
      ELBOX Computer is now selling the MEDIATOR PCI busboard
      through the network of its distributors world-wide.
      CGX3 is bundled with MEDIATOR PCI. This is an excellent
      advertising move for the commercial CGX4.
Before the agreement
 ELBOX offered Mr. Frank Mariak that our programmers would prepare
drivers for various graphic chipsets, including Voodoo3 PCI, for
working with CyberGraphX. Such drivers would then be transferred in
the form of source codes written in assembler for Mr. Frank Mariak's
authorisation and distribution. We expected only making available some
developer's information related to CGX in return.
   However, Mr. Mariak decided he would himself write the drivers
   if we supported him with hardware and documentation. Which we did.
False information
in the announcement on selling rights to Voodoo drivers included
alleged expected technical problems related to implementation
of 3D drivers with our MEDIATOR PCI busboard.
   Please note that none such problems exist. On our request,
   Mr. Mariak was to report to us any possible problems related
   to his development work... and he remained silent all the time.
Using Developer's Documentation
for MEDIATOR PCI and computer hardware (including Voodoo3 PCI card)
provided free of charge by ELBOX Computer as requested by Mr. Frank
Mariak for writing Voodoo3 drivers, as it turned out, for another
company is the clearest form of breaching rules of social life
and business honesty and integrity.
New business vision
On 13 Oct 2000, Mr. Frank Mariak signed an agreement on selling
the Voodoo3 drivers for benefit of another company. In contacts
with our company, Mr. Frank Mariak never mentioned any intention
of this kind on his part, never suggested such a possibility
and never asked for or negotiated any payment for his software
writing work. He never contacted us in this issue.
Then, out of the blue, he surprised us and all Amiga users with
making a "simple BUSINESS DECISION" (original quotation from
Mr. Mariak's response to our inquiry for explanation of the
VFD & DCE's announcement) on making an alliance with a third
party for selling the above rights.
We hope this explanation clarifies the situation.
Please make sure that we refrain from any comments of ethical
or whatever nature. The above are simple facts to make you all
aware of the plot behind the scenes.
ELBOX MOVES FORWARD
In the view of the circumstances described above, ELBOX Computer
hereby announces that our programmers shall prepare software
for supporting Voodoo3 cards in the MEDIATOR PCI busboards.
These drivers will be included in the software package for the
MEDIATOR PCI busboard. We expect completing work on the first
version of this software within two weeks.
Amiga super expansion system
 The as yet unnamed Amiga classic expansion system is currently in the
alpha test phase. The product will initially be released for A3000/T
and A4000/T computers.
The system provides:
- 3 PCI slots
- 3 Zorro-III compatible slots
- 1 AGP slot
- 1 SDRAM DIMM slot
- 2 CPU expansion slots
- 1 A1200 style clock slot
- 2 x serial and 1 x EPP Parallel ports
 Inital CPU module offerings will be 400 MHz Motorola Power PC G4
based and 333 MHz Motorola Coldfire based (68k compatible)
Coldfire CPU module completed and in testing.
 The new coldfire CPU module is now complete and in testing with the
expansion module. OS patches and library updates required are now
being developed. Initial performance testing is very impressive.
Legacy 68k Amiga applications like DTP and 3D rendering software run
at modern PC/Mac speeds.
 PowerPC module has been delayed due to performance concerns. Our
Charon chipset on the Expansion system is being redesigned to allow
full speed access by both CPU modules and the PCI and AGP busses
concurrently.
Expansion System drivers now in Alpha testing stage:
- LSI(Symbios) 53C8xx SCSI
- VIA rhine ethernet (10/100)
- DEC Tulip ethernet (10/100)
- Intel Ethernet (10/100)
- Axxon I/O (HS serial parallel)
- SB-Live!
- HPT-366 IDE
GFX drivers coming soon pending RTG software decision.
27 September, 2000
 Nova Design, Inc., the award winning leaders in graphics software for
the Amiga, is pleased to announce a special bundle and sale on ImageFX
for the holidays! We're not kidding around this time, we're not
playing softball either. This is a big league sale. We mean it -- this
one is big! Really Big!! (to quote the Shatner)
 Before we tell you just how low we've cut the price of ImageFX, you
really want to know that we're adding something extra special into the
package. With EVERY sale we're including PowerStation -- the PPC
modules for ImageFX. Normally these sell for $99.95 all by themselves.
But not this time, because we're going to include them for free when
you buy ImageFX new or upgrade!
 Now, here's the deal on the pricing. You're getting ImageFX and the
PowerStation modules included in the package. ImageFX itself normally
lists for $299.95 -- and sells for about $240 from most mail order
companies. If you added PowerStation to that price you'd be paying
$340 or so, but not this time. For the first time ever, we're going to
lower the price to only $199.95 for direct or reseller sales! That's
less than $200. Granted, it's only a nickel less, but it's still the
lowest price ever offered outside of Clem's copy of a used ImageFX on
eBay!
 If you just need to upgrade your ImageFX -- the deal is even better,
because we're lowering the upgrade prices as well. If you're upgrading
from ImageFX 3.x, the price will be only $59.95. PowerStation ALONE
cost more than that! If you're upgrading from 2.x, the price is only
$79.95. If you have ANY other, older, version of ImageFX -- the
upgrade price is being dropped $25 down to only $124.95 now! We've
NEVER lowered upgrade prices before and we don't plan to do it ever
again.
 The only 'catch' is that you better buy soon, because this sale isn't
going to last long. It's just for the holidays or until my partners
find out and make me stop!
 Special Pricing Again
 Okay, one more time. ImageFX, brand new, with PowerStation, is only
$199.95 for a limited time.
 Upgrades from 3.x, 2.x, or older are an insanely low $59.95, $79.95
and $124.95 respectively. Also for a limited time.
 Remember, ImageFX is available from your favorite Amiga reseller and
they need your business too. Outside the US contact our distributors
Haage and Partner in Germany or EyeTech in the UK. They are running
their own specials at this time and you should contact them for their
prices.
 If you wish to order directly at full retail you can also fax your
order to (804) 282-3768 or mail it to Nova Design, Inc., 1910 Byrd
Avenue, Suite 204, Richmond, VA 23230 ATTN: INSANE PRICING
 For more information visit us on the Internet at
http://www.novadesign.com
 'PowerStation' works on any Amiga equipped with a PowerUP supported
PPC accelerator with ImageFX 3.2 or higher installed. WarpUP with the
new PowerUP compatibility also works well. ImageFX works on any Amiga
with 4mb of RAM and a hard drive.
What's this thing about
 First, you need an Amiga Computer for this tool. Furthermore, the
Amiga must run at least version 2.1+ of the operating system. Every
Amiga user knows the Installer tool, distributed with the system.
Well, the idea is nice, but the Installer became a pretty old thing
during the last years. Thus, in 1997 I decided to rewrite the entire
tool and the result is the InstallerNG, which you can get here. Below,
please find a few of the things which are enhanced (compared to the
old Installer) and which are completely new:
 o the compiler itself is stronger and, thus, much safer
 o resizeable and modern GUI; if you like, plugin the MUI interface
 o mc68060 and PPC recognation and support
 o many new functions (see the documentation)
 o interpreter options (e.g. debug, create uninstall scripts, etc...)
 o optional compiler modules
 o many, many more ...
 And of course, it is fully compatible to the old Installer (provided
the scripts are ok)!
Archives
 The InstallerNG is Freeware. You may download the entire distribution
(binaries, documetantion, developer information, compiler modules, GUI
plugins, sample scripts), the binaries (including a version for either
68000 and 68020+ plus a debug version) or related compiler modules
here.
 o complete archive (440k,Oct 1, 2000) download
 o the binaries only (215k, Oct 1, 2000) download
 o compiler modules (4k, Oct 1, 2000) download
 If you would like to release your own GUI plugins or compiler
modules, please don't hesitate to contact me.
CS&E Retireing from the Amiga Market
«Farewell from CS&E, Dear friends,
maintaining a commercial business in the Amiga market has become increasingly difficult. I don't just mean in terms of the poor sales, but in terms of maintaining professional communication and business relationships. I don't feel I am able to offer a truly professional service for the Amiga as I have failed on both these counts. I have made inproper comments on mailing lists and failed to attract developers to sign for CS&E.
As I have made the announcement before that CS&E would leave the classic Amiga but come back for the next generation, it is with regret that I have to say this time the company is leaving the Amiga to concentrate on the PC development.
Amiga Survivor will be continuing as a non-profit making magazine through the editorial staff but CS&E will continue to lend a hand in taking orders.
I wish the Amiga all the best and will be keeping a very close eye on all the developments as an eager customer.»
FPSE V0.08 Amiga Revision 5
Mathias Roslund released the version 0.08 Amiga Revision 5 of the Open Source Playstation Emulator "FPSE" (Free PlayStation Emulator) on October 27th, 2000. This is a minor update which mainly concerns people that have SCSI errors. In detail, following things have changed:
  • New: MDEC movies can now be decoded in gray scale which results in a speed-up. You can activate this option with -g.
  • New: Support for 24Bit-PSX-Screens. This should make MDECs look like the original on the console.
  • Change: The CD-Code has been changed. CMD_READ is now used instead of direct SCSI. This should work with all CD-ROMs. However only sektors with 2048 Bytes are supported. Games with different sector sizes will not work properly.
The emulator runs on PPC-Amigas with 32MB RAM, WarpUP V4, CGFX V3 and requires a PSX-BIOS. more ...
