Pictures from the Pegasos 2 - a slightly different Christmas story...

"Four against Murphy" or how the Pegasos 2 made it at least against all odds for Christmas:

At that time there was the order by Genesi that all already produced Pegasos 2 boards should be shipped until Christmas. And this Pegasos shipping 2 was the first at all.

So Gerald Carda and Thomas Knäbel from Oberursel went to Oberhausen, to DCE where the Pegasos 2 should be produced when the plain circuit boards should arrive there.

But there were no boards... TNT sent the boards to "DK" not to "DE" and now they had to be moved from Denmark to the right destination. Two worthful days went by...

But not enough, Murphy not satisfied yet - there was potential for more things going wrong. And seeesh!!! - a soldering machine went broke and needed a repair!

Holy evening approached and the question was not if something else might go wrong but what it will be this time. The answer came quicker than hoped: just on the first day of production one of the SMD machines left synchronity...

But Thomas and Gerald just kept the track and with the help of the whole DCE team the sailed through all these problems!

But: Worthful time was lost and the board production lasted till the afternoon of the 23rd...

Also the programmers were busy all day and night and worked coordinated by Ralph Schmidt on the new firmware and on fitting MorphOS 1.4.1 to the Pegasos 2. André Siegel had hands full of work with making the 61 page manual perfect and let it translate with two fellows to German and French.

The last day before Christmas Eve! How should the boards go on their journey just in time? Sure: His Pegasos 2 boards share Guido Does by Vesalia picked up just at the production site - but what shoud be done with the orders of the other customers?

Then Christian Kemp surprisingly came along offering his help - coming from his home in Luxembourg he offered to make a 600 km trip to bring the boards from DCE, Oberhausen to Ron van Herk, Rotterdam just that evening so that the boards could be sent to all the world an December the 24th.

So it came the day of Christmas Eve Christian and Ron supported by his wife Cindy packed Christmas packets with mainboards, CPU cards, slot panels, manuals and self burned and printed MorphOS CDs and brought them on their way.

At least Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco were able to announce the good news at morpos-news.de: UPS just got the boards intended for Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Luxembourg, the UK and the USA - including Hawaii.

The following pictures may be used as evidence that the Pegasos 2 boards are really produced and sent away:

Pictures of some Pegasos 2 boards

The Shipping: In the beginning there was chaos...

...but at least...

...and one by one...

...it was fullfilled by Christian and Ron:

The boards ready to go at ComputerCity in Rotterdam.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas greetings from Coyote Flux and individual Computers
Merry Christmas from a new team in the Amiga market: Coyote Flux and individual Computers are working together on a basis of a contract that has been signed on October 1st, 2003.

The young programmer-team also has a new website under www.coyoteflux.nl. The two brothers Sharwin and Rakesh Raghoebardayal became famous in the Amiga community for various projects like PPC680x0 (a 68K to PowerPC assembly translator), the sound editing system Coyotesound, photogrammetry software J Miner and more high-quality software.

Individual Computers is known for many hardware products for Amiga computers, specialized PC hardware and retro-computing projects. Serving private customers and professionals like the US computer forensic department of defense, individual Computers mass-produces own designs, and does contract work for other parties.

With more than 50 years combined experience and detailled knowledge about the target markets, the newly formed team is geared towards development of new hard- and software applications. The sales and marketing contacts of individual Computers will make the products available worldwide in more than 40 countries.

The first project of this cooperation is Kickflash OS4. Coyote Flux provided the firmware of the product that has been sent to the resellers yesterday. We hope that all users of classic Amigas will enjoy a fast cold-start time of their computers with this product, and are looking forward to more projects in the near future.

In time for the Christmas days, the toplevel domain server problems in Gabon have been resolved. Our domain http://ami.ga is working again. (nba)

AmiGBG 2004 - Swedish Amiga Fair
For the third year in a row, the Swedish Amiga fair AmiGBG is arranged in Gothenburg, Sweden. The date set for AmiGBG 2004 is the 17th of April next year. The AmiGBG fair is an event which is focused on the Amiga computer platform and is once a year gathering companies, user groups, users and visitors who are all interested in or curious about the platform that created the essence of multimedia - the Amiga.

This year's fair is held by three Amiga user groups all situated in Sweden; AmiGBG from Gothenburg, ACGGBG (Amiga Computer Group) from Gothenburg and Syntax Society from Landskrona in the south of Sweden.

In the year 2002 the first AmiGBG event was held. It was a huge success with around 450 visitors. The year after, it was yet again time to open the gates for another great AmiGBG fair at Lindholmen, Gothenburg.

AmiGBG is an event that partly looks back upon the history around the Amiga personal computer, but the main focus lies on the promising future that this platform now has - in terms of new hardware (the AmigaOne) which is based on the PowerPC processor and a new version of AmigaOS (Amiga Operating System) for this new hardware - AmigaOS 4.

At the fair, you will have a chance to see the new AmigaOne systems based on the G3 and G4 processors and also have a look on the classic Amiga computers that many people were brought up together with - these days gathered under the concept Classic Amiga.

At AmiGBG 2004 we also hope to be able to present a complete version of the AmigaOS 4 running on the AmigaOne. If so, that will be the highlight of the fair and a starting shot for the comeback of Amiga!

Furthermore; Linux will be demonstrated on AmigaOne, user groups will have a chance to present themselves - the fair is a gathering force for everyone interested in the future of Amiga. The target group is of course people interested in Amiga, but also people that are interested in alternative computer platforms.

Among the exhibitors, you will find everything from Swedish and European companies to Swedish user groups. Not only pure Amiga related companies have been invited - but also other hardware retailers.

For some more information about the previous events held by AmiGBG, please check these links:

AMIGAplus Redaktion

AMIGAplus 12/2003 (#142): Weihnachtszeit

AMIGAplus CD #25
Schwerpunkte: PNG-Icons für das AmigaOS (Icons, Tools, Infos); Video und Fotos von der VideoBörse 2003 in Bremen; Die 40 besten Scene-Demos 2003; Updates zu aktuellen Spielen; alle Tools- und Games-Neuheiten wie AmigaAMP 2.10, SCouT, NewsCoaster, Virus Executor u.v.m.

AmigaOne: "EasterEgg" in U-Boot
In a thread on amigaworld.net Thomas and Hans-Jörg Frieden explained a first "Easteregg" which has been hidden in U-Boot.

Those ones who do not want to know something of PPC, multitasking and graphical user surfaces can activate the second modus of its AmigaOne by entering the following command lines in the U-Boot command line:

setenv easteregg 1
saveenv
reset

Deactivate:

setenv x86_mode
setenv vga_fg_color 'n'
setenv vga_bg_color 'n'

'n' stands for standard ANSI colour values where you have to enter e.g. "0" for black or "7" for white. The variables "vga_fg_color" and "vga_bg_color" can be used to modify the optical surface of the BIOS screen. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Emulation: "SheepShaver" Emulates a MacIntosh PPC on x86
"Sheepshaver" is the first Mac emulator for x86 PCs capable of emulating PPC-based Macintoshes. The software currently emulates a 604 CPU, requires a ROM image from a PCI-based "Old World" Macintosh, and works with MacOS up to version 8.6. The program's homepage is currently just a clean building space, with a files section in which you can get the sources for the current version.

Amiga, Inc.: Calling All User Groups!
Community has always been the backbone of the Amiga platform; indeed, without it, the platform would have folded long ago. With AmigaOS4.0 approaching release, the community has taken a lead once again, with dedicated individuals and user groups throughout the world working to show AmigaOS4.0 running on AmigaOnes.

We are now at a stage where we are looking to bring the user groups together into a more formal forum, providing feedback to Amiga, Inc. on how best it can support the user groups whilst also allowing the user groups to be able to bind themselves together in a mutual organization for self help and support.

This new organization will be a crucial element in the growth of the Amiga platform as AmigaOS4.0 is released and the community begins to expand. We are thus making a call to all user groups to submit their details via this form so that we can begin the construction of this organisation and get the resources in place to service it. (nba)

New website about hardware do it yourself projects for Amiga, Amithlon and Pegas
Carsten Siegner has opened a new website with the URL "www.Pegasossoft.de" which covers information about his all of his hardware projects.

Now there is not only the known analog data capture system for the serial RS 232 port but also a hardware for the same port for a multi purpose controler device. This hardware is called "Multiprogrammer" and is a board with three decoded 8 pin universal ports. These ports can be programmed independently. Furthermore the board has a data in port which can read serial data directly.

Further information about this project as well as the circuit design is available from the website. (nba) (Translation: ub)

New and updated tools from OnyxSoft
The Swedish shareware-developer-group OnyxSoft released two new and three updated tools:

AddLF (Version 1.0)
This is a very simple tool that makes text files that has no linefeeds in them become readable in non-wrapping text-viewers/editors. It tries to wrap after 80 characters but might go 10 chars longer if it means not breaking a word. If a word is very long when AddLF wants to wrap it will cut the word and insert a dash "-".

OnyxPrelude (Version 1.0)
This is a new fresh mixer for the Prelude sound cards! You can test the mixer even w/o a prelude =) Everything concerning audio can be controlled by ARexx! Everything concerning audio can be controlled by userdefinable hotkeys! There are two different mixer GUIs, pick the one you like! The mixer can popup on hotkey or ARexx event! The mixer can close again after a userdefinable delay! A very small, configurable and slick bevel can popup instead of the mixer on hotkey or ARexx events! It also has all normal features of a mixer, like the ability to change the display name of a channel, hide channels you never use, reset the card on startup etc. And it uses MUI...

DigiConverter (Version 1.1)
Now you can also convert from and to floats. Useful mainly for handling floats where you only have access to for example hexadicimal values.

DRemind (Version 1.66)
Now you can make your remind *Bold*, /Italic/, _Underlined_ and/or coloured in the remind list! Fixed a bug which caused Single reminds to never pop up. (a 2<->4 digits year bug). --BAR--'s couldn't be moved since they where excluded from the sorting routines in DRPrefs. Which gadgets to be shown as default was not correct. See Main GUI Settings/Show'n'Hide for other gadgets.

TheMPegEncGUI (Version 2.31)
Now full CDDB-support is built-in into TheMPegEncGUI! You don't need to use some other program to get those CD-IDs from the net and then try to figure out what file it was and load that into The_GUI, all is now automated. Insert a CD, add files (previously leached off the CD, or directly from the CD if you have f.ex. AllegroCDFS), then select Obtain CDDB from the ID3-Tag menu. When drag'n'dropping files into the file list window some menu options were not enabled. You had to add a file using the Add-button. There were some dublettes and inconsistencies of hotkeys for the menus. Switching between Lame/Mpega in Lite didn't work from the menu. The bitrate was not correct in the full and Lite-versions. USB-Stack: Poseidon Update V2.2
Chris Hodges announced the release of version 2.2 of the USB stack 'Poseidon'. Read his announcement:

After my seven months break due to my diploma thesis, I have reworked the HID class quite a bit. It now supports digital and analogue joypads via the lowlevel.library. Moreover, the class now supports changing of HID Output and Feature items (i.e. for keyboard LEDs or Force Feedback/Rumble joypads). Input values for items can now be scaled and clipped and flipped. There is support for local and global variables. The value that is used for the action can now also be redirected to origin from these variables, timers, click counts, etc, or randomly (e.g. for auto fire). Actions can now be triggered upon definable condition codes, making it even more powerful (you want to do a special action on three clicks with the middle mouse button, or when shift is pressed?, no problem!). The default keyboard mapping can now also be changed. All this comes with a price -- the GUI is now a bit more complex. But no worries -- you don't have to use these features, if you don't like to. The English version of the manual has been updated a bit to reflect the changes -- unfortunately, the German translation (done by Michael Böhmer) has been lost in a crash. I will update the guide accordingly, but this will take some more time.

Several classes have been updated, such as the massstorage.class. It now has some new default settings and fall back options.

The poseidon main library now fixes the problems created by broken Olympus cameras not being bound to the MSD class. It now also tries to assign better names to devices that don't come with string descriptors.

Trident has been rewritten into subclasses for the MorphOS mprefs and is now a bit more stable (I hope).

The installer script has been slightly updated and now contains Spanish strings, kindly translated by Dámaso Domínguez.

The AddUSBHardware command now has an "ALL" option, allowing to take the stack offline by just issuing an "AddUSBHardware REMOVE ALL" line -- handy for game starting scripts.

Finally, the device driver for the Algor has been optimized a bit, and also a bug had been fixed.

Now for something completely different. In August, I stopped taking registrations, because Elbox treated me badly (as a summary) and I hoped, that they would change their mind. I should have known better. They kept selling their cards, even though they knew that the users wouldn't be able to use them. They didn't care at all about the users and their fate.

As of today, the registration process is open again. Keyfiles can again be obtained from me directly (cash or bank transfer, no credit cards!). Please note that the licence fee has been increased a bit to reflect the new features added. Of course, no new keyfile are required for current users to use the V2.2 version.

IOSpirit will offer a bundle for ArakAttack users soon, details will be announced by IOSpirit in a few days (please don't bugger them right now). ArakAttack currently works on Amithlon and OpenPCI supported PCI bridge boards for OHCI and UHCI PCI cards (and onboard USB). EHCI (USB2.0) is being implemented and will be available later.

ArakAttack currently does not work on Mediator boards, but means are being prepared to get it running on these machines to offer a high-quality USB driver for any PCI card (including the Spider).

That's it for now. Hope you will enjoy the new Poseidon release and have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Who knows, maybe we will see many nice things happing during 2004. Such as the AmigaOS4 release or the Pegasos II.

Stay healthy! There's still much to come. (nba) (Translation: sk)

Announcement: new demo version 0.9beta of HD-Rec
There'll be a new beta demo version of HD-Rec available for download before Christmas.

"HD-Rec" is a MIDI and audio sequencer, i.e. audio and MIDI recordings can be arranged in the same window and replayed synchronously.

Particular improvements in V0.9beta:
  • Audio mixer with 16+1+1 true stereo channels and 4 Aux ways
  • realtime audio effects (reverb, delay, chorus, equalizer...)
  • strongly improved softsynth "Sweeper" (resonance filter, samples)
The aim of HD-Rec is to be able to do a whole music production from the composing to the mastering within one application. Using the softsynth and the audio effects of HD-Rec you'll need no external sound producer or effects devices. The music signal doesn't leave the computer at no time and can be exported directly as WAV or MP3 file. The quality is always excellent and independant from the sound card. Noise, buzzing or whimping are now part of the past.

The whole scenery (mixer settings, effects, sounds, notes) are saved on the computer and are reproduced 1:1 when being reloaded.

The softsynth "Sweeper" offers independant from the computing power always exact sample timing and can be played in realtime via an external master keyboard if needed. Though, for this you need a fast computer with 500 MHz clock or more.

Sweeper has very different synthesis algorithms and supports multisamples. Because of this, a wide sound spectrum is possible, from the old C64 sound across Techno to a realistic piano or string ensemble.

HD-Rec is a system friendly 68K application and doesn't make any use of the custom chips - therefore it runs on the "classic" Amiga as well as under WinUAE and Amithlon. In addition, the program has already successfully been tested under MorphOS.

Screenshots:

Demo songs:
http://www.hd-rec.de/index.php?site=download

(Neither have external effects or sound producers been used nor have any samples been included except the drums and the piano solo.) (snx) (Translation: wk)

Advent at individual Computers
Special price for the X-Surf 2
The advent season has already begun at our trade partners, now we want to announce it officially again: Participating resellers have the X-Surf 2 networking card for 69.90 EUR. This price is also valid for direct orders. You're saving 20 EUR compared to the recommended retail price, but only until December 31st!

Kickflash in production
Kickflash OS4 which has been announced in June is now in production. It's going to be available starting December 22nd - if the parcel services work fast enough, this might be in time for Christmas Eve! Kickflash reduces the boot-time of classic Amigas dramatically, because it gets rid of all the reboots that today's Amigas have to do. Romupdates ("setpatch"), every resident-capable program, Blitzkick-modules and tools like Prepareemul (Macmem) can be stored in the 1M flash memory. They're executed without reboots on a cold start of the Amiga. Price: 34.90 EUR.

Deathbed Vigil DVD now in PAL
By the end of next week, we expect a shipment from Dave Haynie. The DVD of his film "Deathbed Vigil" is now available in PAL video norm, and is shipped on a DVD-R. This format can be played back on nearly all players in Europe, and should be a lot more compatible than the NTSC-DVD+R that were only available for a long time. The price per DVD is 39 EUR, and Dave has promised to sign each cover again.

Fresh 5.25 inch disks with 48TPI
We have produced disks in the USA for the European retro-computing fans. For a lot of years, disks of the 5.25 inch size were available in nearly every store, but since more than one year, all inventories are sold out. Trying to use 96TPI or 135TPI disks is not always successful, because the heads of Commodore and Apple drives are only made for 48TPI. Other disks have errors, or seem to lose data for no appearent reason.

We have found a company in California that has started the production machines for us. To get the disks to Germany at a reasonable price, we found a complicated but cheap way to transport them: First by train nearly 3000 miles to New York, then by ship to Antwerp, and the last part to Aachen by truck. Starting December 17th, we can offer 25 disks DS SD (48TPI) without envelopes, with stickers at a price of 9.90 EUR! (snx)

Genesi (E-Mail)

Genesi selects IBM PowerPC for Performance-intensive Pegasos Release
Genesi today announced a new, PowerPC®-based, modular MicroATX mainboard release that brings flexibility and efficient processing power to performance-intensive applications, including desktops, workstations, servers, and communications products.

This latest MicroATX board is the most powerful and cost-effective hardware foundation for Genesi's popular Pegasos platform, with over 1,000 users in 34 countries around the world.

The new motherboard features an IBM PowerPC 750CXe microprocessor and supports industry standards software such as Open Firmware, and multiple operating systems including distributions of Linux and BSD.

"Genesi's new PowerPC-based computer brings effective and flexible processing power to the desktop, low-end server, firewall and pervasive space at an affordable price", said Bill Buck, CEO of Genesi.

Looking forward, Mr. Buck also revealed that Genesi would be working closely with IBM to release a 64-bit Pegasos workstation in 2004, based on the new IBM PowerPC 970 microprocessor.

"Today's Pegasos release is a starting point that will enable all the operating systems developed for the PowerPC environment to begin to move in this direction with confidence and purpose", he explained.

The new Pegasos platform is also the core for Genesi's first commercial product designed to support the increasingly-important security infrastructure requirements of Fortune 1000 companies and large institutions.

The Pegasos Guardian provides: border protection of networks; proactive protection of network assets; and logging and auditing of suspicious network traffic.

"IT Managers must know exactly what is happening on their networks, and why", said Buck. "The Guardian gives you a very high level of control and the new MicroATX board provides the performance platform for them to achieve this."

Choice of the PowerPC environment enhances the security that Guardian offers: "Much of the office and network IT infrastructure in use today is x86-based", explained Buck. "The Guardian runs on a different processor platform and is not as susceptible to the common buffer overflows that are the main entry point for security breaches." Any element of security begins with people, procedure and enforcement, but with tools such as the Guardian IT Managers can audit and build their own code. Customers need a total security posture, and this is one component of a total security system.

Genesi developed the Guardian with partners ShopIP (www.shopip.com) and Diginexus (www.diginexus.com). The interface design and border-level protection is based on the acclaimed ShopIP Crunchbox.

Proactive protection is based on the security scanning features of Nessus (www.nessus.org) and the internal invisible IDS scanning features were developed and contributed by Diginexus.

Buck added, "this collaborative effort is an example of the partnerships we expect to develop in the months ahead and indicative of the many and varied potential uses for an open, powerful and efficient hardware platform."

"IBM has worked closely with Genesi and its partners to ensure that the Pegasos platform can be configured to cover the rich variety of applications over multiple operating systems that Genesi and its partners are developing", said Ray Bryant, Director PowerPC Products at IBM Microelectronics. "The integration of the IBM PowerPC 750CXe offers developers further opportunities to extend Pegasos' use into the evolutionary path we have chartered for the PowerPC."

Based on industry standards, such as Open Firmware, the Pegasos supports multiple operating systems including varieties of Linux and BSD. The Pegasos platform also comes with Genesi's own non-UNIX, Quark-based MorphOS. Recent releases supported on the Pegasos include OpenBSD 3.4 and Debian-Installer Beta 1.

Buck added, "in the meanwhile, the strategic value of moving to a Linux Desktop is becoming increasing clear and a migration to Linux has begun. Every major commercial or non-commercial version/distribution of Linux on the market today runs on the Pegasos, including SuSE and the Novell® Nterprise Linux Service package. Getting on the network with the Pegasos Guardian and on the desktop with the Pegasos, now and in the future with the PowerPC 970, places Genesi at the forefront of these major market developments."

Genesi has served the computer hobbyist since the first Beta release of the Pegasos in 2002. Trialed and tested by over 1000 users in 34 countries, enthusiasts have configured the Pegasos in variety of fashions with over a dozen different operating systems. The Pegasos was awarded the Amiga Award 2002 by Falke Media Verlag and recently, the Pegasos was acclaimed as the future home of the Linux desktop by German Linux site PPCNUX.

The Pegasos-Guardian will make its public debut with ShopIP and Diginexus at Infosecurity 2003, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, December 8-11, Booth 126 and be distributed by Pegasos Resellers worldwide through the IBM Global Solutions Directory.

Genesi's "Ready for IBM Technology"-validated Pegasos systems signal the advancement of the IBM 750CXe PowerPC microprocessor family into the broader global marketplace for embedded industrial controls, military, multimedia, consumer electronic appliances, blade servers, thin client systems, storage, networking, firewalls, and communication applications. With leading edge CPU bus speed capabilities and enhanced AGP, PCI-X, SDRAM and DDR support, the combination of the Marvell Discovery II chipset and IBM PowerPC 750CXe processors offers a most desirable solution to the performance-intensive applications marketplace.

Genesi is an IBM Business Partner and carries the Ready for IBM Technology mark on five of its products, the Pegasos Guardian, Pegasos, PegXLin, MorphOS, and OpenBSD for Pegasos. The basic Pegasos featuring the IBM PowerPC processor can be purchased online for 299 Euros at http://www.pegasosppc.com while the Pegasos-Guardian is priced between 5000 and 15000 Euros depending on the configuration and the associated service contract. Genesi is based in Luxembourg and can be found on the Web at http://www.genesi.lu. Details on the Pegasos Guardian are presented at http://www.pegasosppc.com/guardian.php. (snx)

Update of Access Virus MIDI Commands for Tracks&Fields
The VirusOS from Krister "Kicko" Skrtic's Tracks&Fields Amiga Page has reached version 6.5 and is now available for download. According to the author Virus now sounds stronger like MiniMoog, and there is a deeper dimension to the tonality.

The changes include an update of Filt1 mode as well as the implementation of four new values. The update is being offered because Kicko still uses Tracks&Fields, until HDRec is ready. After that all commands will be utilized by HDRec. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Update Of DVDRTools
DVDRTools has been reworked. The following changes were made:

  • The text of the homepage was brought up to date
  • All instructions for DVDRTools are now in HTML format
  • DVDRTools has been recompiled with GCC3.3, something that should provide for cleaner code, and from there on shrink the size of the executable by about 70%, because of the reduction of debugging code
  • The GUI ToastDVD has also been updated and now not only works with DVDRTools alone but also with the other programs of DVDRTools. With this DVDRTools becomes almost as easy to use as MakeCD or BurnIT, it's just that you can do the same stuff with DVDR support
Further, I am now working on a solution to overcome the 2 GB limit, but that's not quite ready yet. (snx) (Translation: dm)

New version of the ASFS Linux dirver
The ASFS file system driver for Linux by Marek Szyprowski is now available as a public beta 1.0 beta 1. With this tool SmartFileSystem (sfs) partitons of the Amiga/MorphOS are accessable while running Linux. In the meantime it became possible not only to read these partitions but also to write to them, even this is still in an experimental stage.

The patch for the kernel source code of Linux is to obtain from the ASFS homepage:
asfs-1.0b1_patch_2.4.21.diff.gz

The author emphasizes that this is a beta version and there is no warranty that this driver works correctly. There is the possibility of system crashes or loss of data. The use of this tool is on your own risk, Marek Szyprowski is not responsible for any kind of damage.

He adds that he successful copied several gigabyte of data using this driver. Feedback of any kind is welcome by him. (snx) (Translation: ub)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 24
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 24 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) BobC: Can you tell us what third party software companies or individuals are interested in writing or actually are writing software for OS4 on the A1? If you can't say who they are, perhaps, what types of third party software is being developed?

Fleecy: I can only tell you of those that have publicly committed to writing for AmigaOS4.0 since the others are either still looking into it or are developing but do not wish to make an announcement yet.

Those that are publicly committed are

Ibrowse
Pagestream
AudioEvolution
CandyFactory 2
Tales of Tamar
VBCC
WordMeUp

Hyperion have also committed to creating AmigaOS4.0 versions of their games and have a licence to develop DirectoryOpus for AmigaOS4.0.

Several other companies have said that when a more complete developer SDK is available and/or when the market size becomes clearer, then they will take another look.

There are likely to be quite a few surprise products turning up as well but as I said, for a number of reasons the companies involved are not willing to announce publicly at this time.

2) Uncharted: Will the new "AG2 services" change the way AmigaOS works from a user's perspective? Will things like devices, system structure (C: DEVS: LIBS: ENVARC: etc.), and UI paradigms be changed?

Fleecy: Initially no but with the introduction of a resources and services architecture, it will change. This architecture internalises the implementation and publicly presents a semantic abstraction. AmigaOS4.0 presents a half way house with its use of interfaces called against libraries. However, because the access is via a semantic abstraction, it will be possible for a user to create a relationship that makes it look like the old organisation model, if they so desire.

As for the interactive environment, we have looked at all that is good in the existing interface as well as all is bad. We are bringing a workflow analysis to this area and, whilst you will be able to recognise elements from previous implementations, there will be a lot that is new and (we hope) better. The whole solution will allow the user to eventually build their own interface so if you want to go back to AmigaOS3.9 Workbench, it should be possible.

3) Shep: A while ago on here I suggested that Amiga could use affiliate marketing, similar to amazon, for marketing the new Amiga. I would gladly join such a scheme when I have my new website sorted out (which will be appropriate because of its theme), what do you think Fleecy?

Fleecy: I think it is a very good idea. We have a lot of ideas ourselves which are partly a reaction to the situation we find ourselves in at the moment. Getting the good news about Amiga's rebirth out into the world is going to be top priority and, as we found at the Micromart show and, as has been proved over the past six months, our user groups are going to be crucial in that process.

4) DaveP: Hi there Fleecy, would you rather do this monthly? ;-)

Fleecy: At least it wouldn't be late all the time ;-)

5) GregS: Are there any plans with including in OS4-4.2 a XML Signature generator?

Fleecy: XML will play a big part in AG2, so yes.

6) Asemoon: There is much concern within the industry about monopoly OS companies abusing their position to make it hard or near impossible to replace components with alternatives. This has never been the case with AmigaOS' design. Will this modularity and freedom continue with future releases?

Fleecy: Very much so. With a resource and services architecture it would be hard to do otherwise.

7) prmetime: 1. When the A1/zico spec was first announced, a partnership with Matrox was announced fairly soon thereafter. I have yet to see any Matrox drivers or chips on hardware to this point. Is Matrox still a partner and will their graphics chipsets be supported?

Fleecy: Matrox are still a partner and, with SNAP coming on board, we will have an excellent set of drivers for Matrox boards. Given that 3D is not currently the forte of Matrox, then we will be concentrating on other, more appropriate products.

8) GregS: Are there any plans (beyond OS4.0) to add to the Amiga some simple and easy to maintain and control Multi-User-Profile system for the AmigaOS?

Fleecy: Yes but it will require the foundations to change first for the data storage and organisation services. That is something that will appear early in AG2.

9) The_Editor: We recently had, what seemed to be a high profile visitor to AW.net expressing his frustration at not being able to find anyone "high enough" to talk to about developing for DE. Due to a lack of information, he is taking his idea elsewhere. Who do we direct such enquiries to in future and what steps would Amiga Inc take to see this calamity is not repeated ?

Fleecy: This is clearly very worrying. I did not receive any information about him and there is supposed to be a requests process on the Amiga Anywhere website. I shall look into this as a matter of urgency.

10) jurassiccamper: Alan has mentioned that earlybird owners may get an installable OS4 beta by christmas. How will this be distributed?

Fleecy: It won't be a beta per se but a pre-release that will not be supported directly. Amigaworld have already expressed an interest in becoming a forum for support and feedback of information generated from the pre-release. As for the format for distribution I believe we are currently considering a downloadable ISO image to be burnt to a CD via Debian.
