`15.Dec.2003` Chris Hodges (E-Mail)	USB-Stack: Poseidon Update V2.2 Chris Hodges announced the release of version 2.2 of the USB stack 'Poseidon'. Read his announcement: After my seven months break due to my diploma thesis, I have reworked the HID class quite a bit. It now supports digital and analogue joypads via the lowlevel.library. Moreover, the class now supports changing of HID Output and Feature items (i.e. for keyboard LEDs or Force Feedback/Rumble joypads). Input values for items can now be scaled and clipped and flipped. There is support for local and global variables. The value that is used for the action can now also be redirected to origin from these variables, timers, click counts, etc, or randomly (e.g. for auto fire). Actions can now be triggered upon definable condition codes, making it even more powerful (you want to do a special action on three clicks with the middle mouse button, or when shift is pressed?, no problem!). The default keyboard mapping can now also be changed. All this comes with a price -- the GUI is now a bit more complex. But no worries -- you don't have to use these features, if you don't like to. The English version of the manual has been updated a bit to reflect the changes -- unfortunately, the German translation (done by Michael Böhmer) has been lost in a crash. I will update the guide accordingly, but this will take some more time. Several classes have been updated, such as the massstorage.class. It now has some new default settings and fall back options. The poseidon main library now fixes the problems created by broken Olympus cameras not being bound to the MSD class. It now also tries to assign better names to devices that don't come with string descriptors. Trident has been rewritten into subclasses for the MorphOS mprefs and is now a bit more stable (I hope). The installer script has been slightly updated and now contains Spanish strings, kindly translated by Dámaso Domínguez. The AddUSBHardware command now has an "ALL" option, allowing to take the stack offline by just issuing an "AddUSBHardware REMOVE ALL" line -- handy for game starting scripts. Finally, the device driver for the Algor has been optimized a bit, and also a bug had been fixed. Now for something completely different. In August, I stopped taking registrations, because Elbox treated me badly (as a summary) and I hoped, that they would change their mind. I should have known better. They kept selling their cards, even though they knew that the users wouldn't be able to use them. They didn't care at all about the users and their fate. As of today, the registration process is open again. Keyfiles can again be obtained from me directly (cash or bank transfer, no credit cards!). Please note that the licence fee has been increased a bit to reflect the new features added. Of course, no new keyfile are required for current users to use the V2.2 version. IOSpirit will offer a bundle for ArakAttack users soon, details will be announced by IOSpirit in a few days (please don't bugger them right now). ArakAttack currently works on Amithlon and OpenPCI supported PCI bridge boards for OHCI and UHCI PCI cards (and onboard USB). EHCI (USB2.0) is being implemented and will be available later. ArakAttack currently does not work on Mediator boards, but means are being prepared to get it running on these machines to offer a high-quality USB driver for any PCI card (including the Spider). `13.Dec.2003` Thilo Köhler (ANF)	Announcement: new demo version 0.9beta of HD-Rec There'll be a new beta demo version of HD-Rec available for download before Christmas. "HD-Rec" is a MIDI and audio sequencer, i.e. audio and MIDI recordings can be arranged in the same window and replayed synchronously. Particular improvements in V0.9beta: Audio mixer with 16+1+1 true stereo channels and 4 Aux ways realtime audio effects (reverb, delay, chorus, equalizer...) strongly improved softsynth "Sweeper" (resonance filter, samples) The aim of HD-Rec is to be able to do a whole music production from the composing to the mastering within one application. Using the softsynth and the audio effects of HD-Rec you'll need no external sound producer or effects devices. The music signal doesn't leave the computer at no time and can be exported directly as WAV or MP3 file. The quality is always excellent and independant from the sound card. Noise, buzzing or whimping are now part of the past. The whole scenery (mixer settings, effects, sounds, notes) are saved on the computer and are reproduced 1:1 when being reloaded. The softsynth "Sweeper" offers independant from the computing power always exact sample timing and can be played in realtime via an external master keyboard if needed. Though, for this you need a fast computer with 500 MHz clock or more. Sweeper has very different synthesis algorithms and supports multisamples. Because of this, a wide sound spectrum is possible, from the old C64 sound across Techno to a realistic piano or string ensemble. HD-Rec is a system friendly 68K application and doesn't make any use of the custom chips - therefore it runs on the "classic" Amiga as well as under WinUAE and Amithlon. In addition, the program has already successfully been tested under MorphOS. `12.Dec.2003` Apple Insider (ANF)	CPU-News: PowerPC 750VX of IBM According to a report of our colleague of the online magazine AppleInsider Big Blue IBM has completed the new micro processor "PowerPC 750VX". The chip is supposed to be used in the next generation of the iBooks of Apple. L3 cache with up to 4 megabyte is to be possible. The Front Side Bus with up to 400 MHz DDR and Altivec-implemantation like at the PowerPC 970 (G5) are further features. The processor is supposed to work with 1.8 GHz while the successor of the 750VX, the planned 750VXe, is supposed to work with 2 GHz. Kickflash in production Kickflash OS4 which has been announced in June is now in production. It's going to be available starting December 22nd - if the parcel services work fast enough, this might be in time for Christmas Eve! Kickflash reduces the boot-time of classic Amigas dramatically, because it gets rid of all the reboots that today's Amigas have to do. Romupdates ("setpatch"), every resident-capable program, Blitzkick-modules and tools like Prepareemul (Macmem) can be stored in the 1M flash memory. They're executed without reboots on a cold start of the Amiga. Price: 34.90 EUR. Deathbed Vigil DVD now in PAL By the end of next week, we expect a shipment from Dave Haynie. The DVD of his film "Deathbed Vigil" is now available in PAL video norm, and is shipped on a DVD-R. This format can be played back on nearly all players in Europe, and should be a lot more compatible than the NTSC-DVD+R that were only available for a long time. The price per DVD is 39 EUR, and Dave has promised to sign each cover again. Fresh 5.25 inch disks with 48TPI We have produced disks in the USA for the European retro-computing fans. For a lot of years, disks of the 5.25 inch size were available in nearly every store, but since more than one year, all inventories are sold out. Trying to use 96TPI or 135TPI disks is not always successful, because the heads of Commodore and Apple drives are only made for 48TPI. Other disks have errors, or seem to lose data for no appearent reason. We have found a company in California that has started the production machines for us. To get the disks to Germany at a reasonable price, we found a complicated but cheap way to transport them: First by train nearly 3000 miles to New York, then by ship to Antwerp, and the last part to Aachen by truck. Starting December 17th, we can offer 25 disks DS SD (48TPI) without envelopes, with stickers at a price of 9.90 EUR! (snx) [News message: 10. In the meantime it became possible not only to read these partitions but also to write to them, even this is still in an experimental stage. If you can't say who they are, perhaps, what types of third party software is being developed? Fleecy: I can only tell you of those that have publicly committed to writing for AmigaOS4.0 since the others are either still looking into it or are developing but do not wish to make an announcement yet. Those that are publicly committed are Ibrowse Pagestream AudioEvolution CandyFactory 2 Tales of Tamar VBCC WordMeUp Hyperion have also committed to creating AmigaOS4.0 versions of their games and have a licence to develop DirectoryOpus for AmigaOS4.0. Several other companies have said that when a more complete developer SDK is available and/or when the market size becomes clearer, then they will take another look. There are likely to be quite a few surprise products turning up as well but as I said, for a number of reasons the companies involved are not willing to announce publicly at this time. 2) Uncharted: Will the new "AG2 services" change the way AmigaOS works from a user's perspective? Will things like devices, system structure (C: DEVS: LIBS: ENVARC: etc.), and UI paradigms be changed? Fleecy: Initially no but with the introduction of a resources and services architecture, it will change. This architecture internalises the implementation and publicly presents a semantic abstraction. AmigaOS4.0 presents a half way house with its use of interfaces called against libraries. However, because the access is via a semantic abstraction, it will be possible for a user to create a relationship that makes it look like the old organisation model, if they so desire. As for the interactive environment, we have looked at all that is good in the existing interface as well as all is bad. We are bringing a workflow analysis to this area and, whilst you will be able to recognise elements from previous implementations, there will be a lot that is new and (we hope) better. The whole solution will allow the user to eventually build their own interface so if you want to go back to AmigaOS3.9 Workbench, it should be possible. 3) Shep: A while ago on here I suggested that Amiga could use affiliate marketing, similar to amazon, for marketing the new Amiga. I would gladly join such a scheme when I have my new website sorted out (which will be appropriate because of its theme), what do you think Fleecy? Fleecy: I think it is a very good idea. We have a lot of ideas ourselves which are partly a reaction to the situation we find ourselves in at the moment. Getting the good news about Amiga's rebirth out into the world is going to be top priority and, as we found at the Micromart show and, as has been proved over the past six months, our user groups are going to be crucial in that process. 4) DaveP: Hi there Fleecy, would you rather do this monthly? ;-) Fleecy: At least it wouldn't be late all the time ;-) 5) GregS: Are there any plans with including in OS4-4.2 a XML Signature generator? With a resource and services architecture it would be hard to do otherwise. 7) prmetime: 1. When the A1/zico spec was first announced, a partnership with Matrox was announced fairly soon thereafter. I have yet to see any Matrox drivers or chips on hardware to this point. Is Matrox still a partner and will their graphics chipsets be supported? Fleecy: Matrox are still a partner and, with SNAP coming on board, we will have an excellent set of drivers for Matrox boards. `22.Nov.2003` Carsten Siegner (ANF)	Analogue data capture for Amiga For the recently by Carsten Siegner announced 3-wire bus interface to control different ICs (we reported) is now a circuit diagram as well as some pictures available as a PDF document. To be able to use the interface has Carsten written a short measuring program that outputs the given voltage as integer byte number and as floating point number. Before using the program the following ENV variables have to be set: "Analog-device": (used serial device) "Analog-unit": (used serial unit) "Analog-volt": (maximum measured, permissible voltage and voltage to reach. Typical here are 5 V. Here you should measure again with a multimeter as you can get under circumstances values between 4.089 - 5.04 V.) In the x86-world this is not usual because of that the (of Linux-x86 ported) Linux drivers may not manage this. This oddity of the ArticiaS is supposed to be a included "turbo" which makes the computer "smarter". AmigaOS4 is not affected by these two problems Exactly fitting boxes are not possible because of the costs but Eyetech works with Naya Design on some modifications which change the standard boxes to Amiga boxes in a cheap way. Single-CPU-modules with faster G3/G4-processors already exists and have been presented officially, too. But there must be ca. 400 preorders to enable such a product. Now that big steps with the game engine have been taken in the last few months, and Oliver says this is "about 98% ready," the thing urgently needed now is 3D graphic artists. ZeroVertex is looking for 3D artists and animators who make use of 3dsmax, Milkshape3D, or some other software that offers "bone animation" support. `19.Nov.2003` Redaktion amiga-news.de	Status Quo: Summary about the issues regarding Pretory SA During the last months the French press, among them l'Humanité (1, 2), Les Echos (1) and L'Expansion (1) , reported several times about an insolvency of the American-French company Pretory which is specialized to security services and employed for example security services for the Air France at airports. The reports were claiming Pretory SA (France) was employing a stuff not sufficient trained or with too less proven reliability at the highly sensible area of security. Inofficial sources are talking about wages not beeing paid since May 2003 for about 560 employees. Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco are shareholders and managers of the US company Pretory USA, which subsidiaries Thendic France S.à.r.l. and Thendic Deutschland GmbH are counted as precurors of the Pegasos distributor Genesi S.à.r.l.. Thendic is running a court suit against Aminga Inc. since some time (amiga-news.de reported). In a hearing of the Tribunal of Commerce in Paris last Monday, November the 17th 2003, according to Buck and Velasco at ANN.lu a sentence has been made which declares Pretory S.A. as bancrupt and calls a liquidation manager. Due to that there is now a transfer of Thendic-France S.à.r.l.'s assets to Genesi S.à.r.l. possible. The issues will not affect Genesi in any kind else, Buck told. `18.Nov.2003` Carsten Siegner (ANF)	3-Wire Bus-Interface for Amiga Carsten Siegener tells that he finished the first hardware test for the "3-Wire Businterface" for the Amiga. With this interface the Amiga is allowed to read and control ICs with serial datatransfer. A very important group of ICs with this bus art are f.e. the 12bit analog-digitalchanger. It was Carsten's aim to get an analog measuring recording for the amiga, which is useable on other systems. This ist the ground for him to think out the 3-Wire Interface, which you can put on your serial port of your computer. The software speakes to the interface via the standard-APIs (serial.device), because of that it is possible to be used with the Pegasos or with the Amithlon. There are many application areas to use such an interface, f.e. weather stations, alarm systems, etc. The interface was tested by the LTC-1292 (12bit ADC). The software just exists as a simple test version with datalogging and debugging. It should be adapt to the LTC-1292 chip, where the software is for the measuring recording. The command is designed to work without user interaction or any kind of interactivity. cURL offers a busload of useful tricks like proxy support, user authentication, ftp upload, HTTP post, SSL (https:) connections, cookies, file transfer resume and more. `15.Nov.2003` ANN (Website)	Court records of the trial Genesi vs. Amiga Inc. chronologically adapted In a still running trial at the court Washington-West in Seattle, USA, has the German Thendic Electronic Components GmbH - respectively Genesi S.à.r.l. as their legal successor they claim to be with reference to the trial about a licence agreement - brought an action on January, 2nd 2003 against Amiga Inc. Sammy Nordström, known as "Samface", has now made for the first time the referring court records - as far as they are publicly available - freely available in chronological order. The lawsuit is all about an OEM licence dated November 2000 in which Amiga Inc. committed themselves against the Thendic Electronic Components GmbH to adapt AmigaDE to their products Cashboy, Mobicash, transponder smart chip readers, Cashboy@Home and WindowsCE terminal (or "Smartboy"). The point at issue here seems to be the second paragraph of appendix A that follows after the product listing that reads as follows: "Thendic has the right with the consent of Amiga at any time to add new products to this list to thereby implicate Amiga's obligations under the Agreement to integrate the Licensed Software into such additional Thendic Products. Amiga will not unreasonably withhold constent to expand the list of Thendic Products." Therefore has Amiga Inc. given Thendic the right to add further Thendic products to this list at any time with the consequence that AmigaDE would have to be adapted to those. Amiga Inc. commits themselves not to unreasonably withhold their consent to the addition of single such further products to Thendic. The question to be solved by the judge may well be whether this OEM licence is valid for the at that time by the formerly Thendic-France S.à.r.l. (now part of the Genesi group) exclusively world wide distributed PowerPC computer Pegasos or whether Amiga Inc. have the right to reject the adaption of AmigaDE to this product. That Genesi S.à.r.l. themselves appeared as a plaintiff is based on the - according to them - possible transferability of the licence agreement as the Thendic Electronic Components GmbH as well as Thendic-France S.à.r.l. and Genesi S.à.r.l. have the same main shareholder, Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck. The court records about this lawsuit have already been made available via the Internet before (as far as they had been publicly available) but to have access there you had to register (for free) at the owner of the site, Rich Woods, and then you received a password. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database): 1) Amighista: Is Python to be included in the upcoming OS4.0 release? If yes, which version? Will it include a GUI binding (like wxPython, PyGTK or Python for QT)? Who's the person in charge for the porting? Fleecy: Python is being considered as the cross platform scripting language for AmigaOS4. It is still too early to talk about the project as AmigaOS4.0 itself is the priority at the moment but progress is being made in determining how to create a version that will integrate well with and make use of all the new features of AmigaOS4. Important issues to consider include the GUI and how best to implement the concept of the "ARexx port". 2) Step: We are continuously seeing improvements on the OS4 front in shape of screenshots, progress reports, etc. but why dont we see this in regards of the DE/Anywhere? Fleecy: As we have said on several occasions, the AmigaDE was always a technology set from which we were to develop product lines. The first product line we talked about was Amie, which was to be a Smartphone to Server operating environment. However, after 18 months of experience with Intent, it became apparent that it would not be able to span such a wide vision, being better suited to a content solution. This allowed us to restart AmigaOS development, with the aim of developing it over time into something approaching the original Amie concept, whilst implementing the Amiga Anywhere and AACE product lines from the AmigaDE technology set. The current focus of AACE is content deployment, which means deploying one or more pieces of content in a closed or open mode onto software hosts - Windows, PocketPC, Smartphone, and then Linux and Symbian. We have been concentrating on card, download and on device deployments in standalone format. There have been no screenshots because all you see is the content itself running. Once we have this completed, we will finish the AACE player with the new interface, but again, this is just a content player. If you are looking for the Amie solution then you will be better off playing close attention to AmigaOS4, particular as the AG2 project starts to see technology becoming part of AmigaOS4 releases. 3) Troels: Have any work started in regard to porting DE to AOS4 and who is (or will be) doing the port? Fleecy: The long announced plan has always been to have AmigaDE technology running on AmigaOS4.2, the first PPC outing for the AmigaDE. This plan has not changed. As is normal, the Tao-Group will do the host port, since the AmigaDE can only run on hosts provided by the Tao-Group. The CII will be exclusively done by them but they have asked that we help them on the PII. Work on it will start when AmigaOS4.1 has shipped. 4) drebben: Why will the JIT not be used for OS components and how will the system know what is an OS compnent and what is not? Fleecy: Accelerating only applications eases the JIT design and integration a lot and gives a much cleaner result since there is a clear separation between legacy applications (and their translated code) and the rest of the system. It also gives us the possibility to add certain kinds of code optimisations and otehr JIT options like translation buffer size s.o. on a per application basis. Another reason are code segments where response time is more important than execution speed, e.g. interrupts. Of course one could argue that the speed impact resulting from the remaining 68k library parts could result in a bad trade off against the benefits of a cleaner code base but then one should also remember that there will be virtually no time critical 68k code left in the system and therefore also virtually no loss of speed. If push comes to shove we can add a dedicated JIT translation service that takes care of system code but it simply isn't worth the effort. Regarding the howto: That's a technical detail I don't want to discuss in the public, what can be said is that we can easily track which loaded code segments belong to which task and the JIT makes use of that functionality. 5) HMK: How old versions of AmigaOS will Amiga Inc. support with Boing Bags, security updates (if such), when OS4 gets released? Fleecy: We obviously want to encourage the community to move towards AmigaOS4.0 with all of its inherent advantages. We also want to encourage them to move to new hardware but recognise that the investment in classic machines and the PPC accelerators has been considerable, which is why we will support them if we can through AmigaOS4.0 and perhaps further. As far as AmigaOS3 is concerned we have to look at the business arguments for continuing to support it. We are of course interested in the views of the community in this respect. In short, we will end support for AmigaOS3 but it is a question of when. 6) IonMane: Why would you want to develop on a cross-platform environment (= CPE) to draw people specifically to your own platform? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having AmigaOS 4 in the first place? Fleecy: I'm afraid I don't understand this question, or at least have read it to mean at least two contradictory things. Can you send me a clearer version privately (fleecy@amiga.com) and I'll answer you and have Amigaworld update this Q&A. 7) kvinkunx: Did you already enter into talks with the authors of OpenOffice? This freeware office package already runs on several platforms defined as 'main' and would be really handy for Amiga users, an official approach of Amiga Inc. may convince the authors to do an A1 port I think. Fleecy: I don't want to provide answers relating to specific third party applications or products but rest assured that we are well aware of the essential applications needed by Amiga users if the Amiga platform is to be a compelling choice for digital users and activity is progressing. I would point out as I have done before that it all boils down to size of market and amount of resources, two things we are working hard to improve. 8) Asemoon: AmigaOS4 is the main reason for me to get an AmigaOne. However I would also like to give Linux a try but I do not want to have to deal with bootloader menus all the time I boot the hardware. Wouldn't it be a good idea to create a bootloader for the AmigaOne which automaticly boots AmigaOS4 and only brings up the bootloader menu after pressing a certain key? Fleecy: Yes it would 8-) The situation is more complex than that. The booloader is designed to boot OS4 and Linux (or any other OS that is able to live on RDB partitions); however no actual code for Linux is ready. What we are planning as a temporary measure is yet-another-env-variable with an indicator on which kernel to load by default. The whole issue is only valid if you install OS4 and Linux on the same HD. If you install on different HDs, no problem: you set a default boot method and can change it by interrupting the autoboot. 9) TheJackal: Are there plans for the new graphics library (or Vega) to have the ability to use 32bits per channel, (128bits per pixel). This would allow floats to be used instead of u8's (0..255)? Fleecy: I don't want to say too much about Vega since we are often accused of talking about things rather than doing. We recognise however that most people will judge AmigaOS4 by what they see and if Vega is to be the mechanism by which what they see is created, then it is going to have to have some pretty impressive and far sighted technology within it. 10) Angrybrit: I'd like to ask about the Media player that's gonna be included in AmigaOS4. `13.Nov.2003` amiga.org (Webseite)	Amithlon: the Amithlon Kernel Project Because the development of the Amiga emulator Amithlon has ceased for a while, it's become considerably more difficult to get Amithlon to cooperate on modern PC hardware. On account of that Gary Colville decided to start the Amithlon Kernel Project. In doing this, Gary has taken advantage of a characteristic of the Amithlon product: Amithlon consists of two components - the actual emulator as well as a tailored Linux kernel, on which the emulator runs. While the former has commercial status and thus may not be modified by outsiders, the latter is under an open source license and may therefore may be expanded by a third party. Through this, support for modern chipsets and graphic cards is made possible. Because new hardware costs money, and Gary can really only focus on the hardware that he personally owns, he is calling (title link) for financial support from interested users. Which hardware he can purchase, and thereby support in Amithlon, depends on demand on the part of the users. Originally, it was the first open-source client to access the eDonkey network. The protocol was 'reverse-engineered' using an efficient protocol sniffer, Pandora. Currently, with eDonkey , it supports several large networks, such as Overnet, Bittorrent, Gnutella (Bearshare, Limewire, etc), Gnutella2 (Shareaza), Fasttrack (Kazaa, Imesh, Grobster), Soulseek (beta), Direct-Connect (alpha), and Opennap (alpha).
