AmigaOS 4: Timberwolf 4.0.1.0213 - RC2 (Update)

After the release of AmigaOS 4.2 as an absolute necessity for it, OpenGL and WebGL support will be added and thus Timberwolf will be completely hardware accelerated.

PDFToolkit was written in Python. Therefore the user-interface (screenshot) could not be realized with Reaction. The program requires the basic Python installation as well as the pyPDF-module written by Mathieu Fenniak. (cg) (Translation: dr)

PPC-Hardware: UltimatePPC-team reconsiders processor choice
The UltimatePPC team wrote: "As we are nearing the summer holidays it is time for a quick status update from our side. The last few months have been hectic as both Gideon and myself have been extremely busy with personal affairs besides trying to advance the UltimatePPC project. As we have the prototype boards in our hands we have been actively working on booting a basic kernel on the PowerPC core and interfacing the board to the Amiga bus. Parallel we are starting the software development side of things, with WarpOS support being worked on - as well as first contact with Hyperion regarding AmigaOS4 support.

We also keep an eye on feedback from the community and are evaluating the choice made for the P1013 CPU.We knew that the FPU in this processor is incompatible with the ones found on older PowerPC boards. Our original plan to fix these incompatibilities in software turns out to have more impact that we had foreseen. For this reason, we will reconsider the choice of PowerPC CPU, while continuing the development work of other important stuff on the current prototype.

So what's next? First we'll take a few weeks off for holidays and time with family. Somewhere in August we get together again. Expect a new update end of August! Happy holidays!"

Editor's note: The main feature of the UltimatePPC would have been that the used controler (as System on a Chip (SoC)) could have been accessed from "outside" (in this case from the Amiga). If a different CPU would be chosen it is doubtful whether this concept still works. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Individual Computers: New products for C64 and Amiga
Press release: Due to popular demand, we've put a product for the C64 back into production that was previously only available from selected resellers. The PLA chip replacement SuperPLA will be back in stock starting september of this year. The revised edition will be available for 18,90 EUR from all our retail partners.

SuperPLA V3 is meant for repair jobs and can be used in the following computers:
  • Commodore C64 (old model)
  • C16, C116, plus/4
  • Floppy-Cartridge 1551
  • Commodore 610
  • Commodore 710
  • Commodore PET (socket UE5)
The target computer is set by jumpers. The new, much more compact design has the jumpers moved to the back of the board.

Our new accelerator for the Amiga 500 has already been discussed in user forums, but will be released with some changes, so customer demand is met in both price and features. The ACA500 is powered by a 14MHz CMOS-68000 processor with 2MBytes RAM and a mass-storage controller for CF-cards and CD drives. Autoboot from CF-card is possible from Kickstart V1.3 and higher. Thanks to our TrueIDE technology, any CF card can be used, even if the card identifies as "removable device". A CD-ROM drive can be connected to the easily reachable IDE port on the side of the A500. The relatively moderate increase in speed is enough to run WHDload. For those who want more CPU power, the ACA500 has a CPU-slot compatible with our accelerators for A1200 computers. This makes even our top model ACA1231 available to the A500 computer. The ACA500 will be available from all resellers for 79,90 EUR. We're currently negotiating about including Kickstart licenses into the ACA500, so the built-in flashrom can be pre-loaded with different Kickstart licenses.

Our new ACA1220 is powered by a full 16,67MHz 68020. For the A1200, this card can be considered a 128MByte-RAM expansion, but for the A500 with ACA500, this board is a turbo-tidbit that provides more memory than has ever been offered at this price: The ACA1220 will be available starting from 89,90 EUR.

The ACA1220 can be expanded with a realtime clock. In an A500 setup, the RTC is already located on the trapdoor expansion, so it's not required there. If you're going to use the ACA1220 in an A1200, you can add an RTC for 19,90 EUR. Battery is not included.

The RTC-module can also be used with other accelerators or even without an accelerator in an A1200. For example, if you own an ACA1230 and haven't yet equipped it with the hard-to-find RTC chip, this module will solve your problem.

As a replacement for the sold-out ACA630, we'll have a new budget-accelerator for the A600, available in Q4/2012. It will be powered by a 16.67MHz 68EC020 processor and provides the popular maprom function, just like all our ACA cards do: Maprom allows executing Kickstart ROM from fast 32-bit memory, increasing execution speed considerably. The ACA620 provides 9+1MBytes of RAM (1MByte reserved for maprom-function). The target price is 99,90 EUR.

The "big" Amiga models don't have to stand back: We'll have big memory for a small budget soon. The new BigRamPlus offers 256MBytes of memory for A3000(T) and A4000(T). The full-size Zorro-3 card will be available from all Individual Computers resellers at 99,90 EUR. (snx) (Translation: dr)

With the help of the converter AVI4HV video files can be converted into formats which can be played with a Amiga 500 (288x200 HAM6, 8Bit 11KHz Stereo) or Amiga 1200 (320x216). 1,5 MB RAM as well as a hraddrive are required.

Complete movies just like "Apocalypse Now" under the title link have to be divided into two files due to the limitations under AmigaOS. A short article about the topic also can be find in current issue of the PDF-magazine Lotek. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Online game database "Oregami": Open for everyone!
Sebastian Eichholz wrote: "For some one and a half years now, we 're tinkering around with some people on our new and ultimate online database for computer and video games named OReGamI (full name is "Open Registry of Game Information"). Within over 800 forum posts we've already created a large amount of the very important data model, built the foundation for the coding with Java and, now, are ready to take the next step: publishing our unfinished work.

Why that, you may ask? Because we want everyone of you to take part in the complete development process of this ambitious project. This can mean reading into our forums as often as you want, or sniffing around in our Java code base.

And when there's something you wanna tell us regarding our ways, or wanna comment on a certain issue, just do it! Register at the forums and post to the public area what's bothering you. If you'd like to join us and actively take part in the development, you should send some info about yourself to Sebastian using gene[at]oregami.org. We're always open for new people, be it gaming experts, programmers, designers or lawyers.

We're curious to meet you!

Some final words: We're German and in order to not introduce an additional language barrier, we started this project using our native language. But this is not a Sauerkraut project. It can't be, because we wanna document the global history of video games. So, we're slowly trying to switch to the English language whereever possible.

We started by offering the contents of our shiny new website bilingual. Substantial information about our project crave for readers." (snx) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Fourth beta of Firefox-port Timberwolf
Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden have published a new beta version of their Firefox port "Timberwolf". Besides bug fixes, the new version implements some major new feature:
  • - Drag & Drop support (customizing, bookmark sorting)
  • - Clipboard support (text only at the moment)
  • - Sound support (can now play video and audio streams)
  • - Some internal changes. NSPR threads completely rewritten to cope with NSPR's pecularities of condition variables.

Thomas Frieden wrote at amigaworld: "As I said, this version is supposed to be "feature complete" to the extend what is possible on current AmigaOS. What remains to be done is bugfixing and occasional optimization, but the feature completeness was my current goal." (cg) (Translation: dr)
