Update of the Game Exodus: The Last War
Slandmedia has put together an update for "Exodus: The Last War." This version is similar to the previous version (1.2) but runs better on graphic cards.
This was already possible in principle, but only in the clearly slower emulation mode. Along with these improvements the game is also able to run on MorphOS now, and presumably (but not tested) on AmigaOS 4.

APC&TCP and AmiATLAS Development Team: Cooperation Broadened
Because of their very good cooperation up until now between AmiATLAS
Development Team and APC&TCP they're going to build on it even more for the future.
Previously the webhosting was taken over, and before approximately a year a forum was founded for all interested and registered users of AmiATLAS.
In the future APC&TCP will undertake more missions, basically serving as the official distributor of AmiATLAS and other new products that are planned for release in the beginning of the coming year.
For a limited time therefore, AmiATLAS is available for an economical price at the new online shop of APC&TCP.

MySQL Development Team supports Pegasos Server
30th November 2004
Uppsala, Sweden
Contact: bbrv@genesi.lu
With the support of the Genesi/Freescale PegasosPPC Pilot Project,
the MySQL core development team has received a full complement of PowerPC-enabled Open Desktop
Workstations. "We are excited about this new alternative platform. Sony Europe's
success with MySQL on Pegasos has opened our eyes to its potential. We are pleased to be able to offer our
internal resources support for this platform," said Mika Asikainen, MySQL's Partner Manager.
When it delivered the machines, Genesi provided an orientation seminar - including a focus on
the use of AltiVec. MySQL AB intends to provide benchmark results that will help demonstrate
Pegasos' superior watt/cycle efficiency and how MySQL database deployments on the platform can
reduce organizations' total cost of ownership.
Genesi is a Certified MySQL Partner
and a Platinum Sponsor of the MySQL Users Conference 2005.

A test version of NewGUI 1.4.1 for AmigaOS 3.x and CyberGraphX 3+ with a few bugfixes and new functions like transparent windows is available for download under the title link. Here are screenshots. NewGUI also runs under the 68k emulation of MorphOS.
With regard to the transparency, it's not a true transparency - a new layers.library would be necessary for that. The background is not updated. Nevertheless the transparency effect requires a lot of processor performance, but according to the author's message the time for the calculation of the background has been reduced to acceptable levels on a 68040.
The Pyramids demo requires at least a 16 bit display. The author welcomes comments and suggestions for improvement.

Test: Compatibility of a Pocket Video-Recorder with MorphOS
After Carsten Siegner acquired a pocket video-recorder, he tackled the question of whether the particular model, an Archos AV400, could be utilized without problems on MorphOS, given its use of a USB connection. He writes:
"Everyone who would like to have a real hardware encoder for the Pegasos should have a look at the AV400 from Archos. This is a pocket video-recorder that encodes and decodes videos in MPEG4-SP format in realtime. Outside of that it outputs the sound formats of MP3, WMA and WAV, and captures WAV clips.
Because it makes use of a USB port, I can copy a clip of video over to my Pegasos hard-drive, or even view it with MorphOS MPlayer directly off the camera's internal 20 meg hard-drive.
A DVD image in DIVX-4 format may be generated with an appropriate editing program direct on the camera's hard-drive, so that I may then view this video data by making use of the video connections on any standard TV. Doing it this way maintains the output quality at the level of a DVD. By contrast, if I make the video with the device itself, the quality is only about SVCD level."

Genesi: Pilot Program Broadened
As Genesi made known via a press release (title link), the second phase of the Genesi/Freescale Pegasos pilot project has been successfully concluded, and Pegasos-based ODWs (Open Desktop Workstations) were delivered to T-Mobile (Czech), MySQL and the NSCEE.
The ODWs are being tested in several server and cluster configurations using different operating systems and applications. To this end the Avalanche Desktop Reference Program at Jostens and Select Comfort and then Cargill, ePredix and Imation is expanded. The Avalanche members use a Debian GNU/Linux solution on Pegasos for the deployment as "thin clients" or fileservers as well as for general use.
Genesi made known further that the delivery of more than 100 Open Desktop Workstations to selected Debian, Gentoo, Crux, Yellow Dog Linux and MorphOS developers has concluded. Demo Scene teams also received consideration.

With NetTools, Illka Lehtoranta has released some little network programs. They are similar to their Miami equivalents, except smaller and PPC-native. NetPing, NetResolve and NetTraceRoute are contained in the archive.
There's also a native replacement for identify.library ready. It's for use with Scout. Although not quite complete, it delivers a better computer description of the Pegasos.

Test: Use of Solid-State Disks in Pegasos?
Ironfist of pegasos.org tested whether solid-state disks (SSD) may be used as replacement hard-drives in a Pegasos without additional components, to do this he made use of an M-Systems 256 MB iDOC (Disk-on-Chip).
The short answer reads rather like a reply to a question to Radio Eriwan: in principal, yes. MorphOS supports the hard-drive device without limitations (screenshot), but the open firmware doesn't, so currently one can't boot from an SSD hard-drive.

distributed.net: PowerPC/MorphOS Overtakes x86/DOS, PowerPC/AmigaOS Catching Up
RC5 72 statistics show that MorphOS edged ahead of x86/DOS, taking 13th place, and now it's PA-RISC/HP-UX in front of MorphOS - but this is a system not in danger of being overtaken anytime soon, judging by the current blockrates. PowerPC/AmigaOS by contrast - right now in 16th place - is doing more blocks per day, although it's three positions back, in this blockrate aspect it's noticeably on MorphOS' heels.

Guru Meditation accquires right of the Amiga version of Directory Opus Magellan
Press release: Gothenburg, Sweden, October 20th, 2004
Guru Meditation and GPSoftware are proud to announce that they have reached agreement on the acquisition of the exclusive, worldwide rights to Directory Opus Magellan for the Amiga platform from GPSoftware. This legendary file manager that started on the Amiga will finally be coming back in a new version in 2005!
Dr Greg Perry of GPSoftware said, "We have been searching for a reliable company to continue the development of Directory Opus Magellan for the Amiga for some years now. After some false starts, we are pleased to have licensed the Amiga product to Guru Meditation, where the ongoing development of the product is now assured. Guru Meditation and partners have some exciting plans. We look forward to seeing their new product and extend to them our wholehearted support for their efforts."
Andreas Loong of Guru Meditation said, "This is an invigorating new venture for us. We are very pleased to acquire the rights to this brilliant program, which for so long has been an essential for any Amiga user. Directory Opus Magellan is a file manager unlike all others. It is the essence, the very spirit of how computers should be used. From the very first release of DOpus in 1995, many Amiga users have seen the raw power provided by DOpus with its unique concept integrating Workbench Replacement Mode, File Management and custom functions in one package. All of these functions have been refined and polished into perfection and now is the time to bring this masterpiece back to the Amiga."
Guru Meditation has entered into a contract with a UK based specialist software firm which will be providing the porting work and implementing new features. Work has already begun to bring the sources up to date for the new AmigaOS 4 operating system.
Guru Meditation & GPSoftware
Guru Meditation was formed late 2003 and started off very modestly as a reseller of Amiga equipment and AmigaOne hardware. In mid 2004 the decision was made to acquire the rights for Directory Opus to bring it back to the Amiga platform as the start of a new program of expansion to help kickstart the Amiga market back into life.
GP Software is an independent Australian company based in the western suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Established in 1984, GP Software develops commercial software packages and provides custom software development services to industry in both Australia and worldwide. GP Software has successfully developed and marketed software packages for a variety of platforms including solutions for Commodore business computers, many products and custom solutions for the Amiga including Directory Opus, GPFax, EasyLedgers and others, plus commercial products for Windows. The company now concentrates on software development and services for Windows, mainly with its flagship product, Directory Opus 8 for Windows.
