Poll: How much 68k-compatibility do you expect of a x86-AmigaOS?
Under the title link amiga-news.de hast started a poll which is written in German. Giving you the possibility to take part as well here is the English translation of the poll:

Question: How much 68k-compatibility a Amiga-like operating system at least should have got so you would buy it for 120 to 150 Euro for your x86-computer?

Answers:
- No compatibility at all. The current developments for the Amiga and some ports would be sufficient.
- A simple possibility to start 68k-applications with an emulator (UAE-integration) would be sufficient.
- I need the same 68k-compatibility as it is integrated in AmigaOS4 or MorphOS.
- I would only buy it if it works under WinUAE.
- I would never buy an operating system for x86 which is compatible to Amiga.

Thanks for your participation! (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS: Instant Messenger SabreMSN 0.41
James "jahc" Carroll has ported his MSN-client SabreMSN to AROS. UTF8-support is still not implemented under AROS but will be added with the next update. Further limitations are the same as in the original AmigaOS-version:
  • Sometimes the SSL stuff fails when trying to connect, so the only thing you can do is keep clicking connect after it fails each time
  • The list of Online contacts isnt always sent in full when I first connect. I havent found an answer to that problem yet. So it appears like everyones offline, or most of your online contacts are offline. Reconnecting to the server once or twice in a row seems to restore the list properly sometimes.
  • Sometimes Sabre reapers. I've only had this happen twice in the last few weeks though. It seems to be dying on the MUI input loop, but maybe I've done something illegal before that call..
  • Newly added contacts arent added to the list, you need to reconnect to see them
  • Sometimes outgoing file transfers report during mid-transfer: "The file transfer was unsuccessful because your computer is out of disk space. Try deleting some files, and then ask the sender to try the transfer again."
  • Sabre uses the older MSN file transfer protocol, so many recent MSN clients fail when trying to send a file to Sabre.

First prices for SAM440ep-flex quoted
The first dealers have quoted prices for the next generation of ACube's PPC-computer SAM440: IMM Informatique will offer a SAM440ep-flex for 489 Euro here, Vesalia will offer it for 449 Euro.

In a thread on amigaworld.net Massimiliano "m3x" Tretene from Acube explained when SAM440ep- and SAM440ep-flex-motherboards will be available. Since 5th January SAM440ep has been delivered to the dealers and during the next 7-10 days some further boards will follow. In 3-4 weeks a fourth charge will be expected at ACube and afterwards it will follow the first SAM440ep-flex motherboards.

According to Tretene the current delay was caused by the CPU-deliveries which require to be happened 16 weeks before. Additionally there has been some communication problems between ACube and some dealers. Because of that the exact number of required boards was not clear. (cg) (Translation: dr)

OpenAmiga.org: Status report
Press release There are now 11 projects open for grabs and 15 assigned projects on OpenAmiga.org. 2008 provided a slow start for OpenAmiga, as expected with the number of available developers for our platform. Hopefully 2009 will speed things up a bit with the SAM adding more and more os4 users to the fold. Still we managed to submit the extended mouse pointer types project to Hyperion and quite a bit of source code was submitted to the svn.

Current status:

Fredrik Wikstrom (salass00) has submitted a range of his datatypes to the svn:
  • sun .au datatype
  • Targa .tga datatype
  • PC Paintbrush Exchange .pcx datatype
  • Direct Draw Surface .dds datatype
  • RIFF-WAVE .wav datatype
  • Mac OS icon .icns datatype
  • Windows icon .ico datatype
  • JPEG 2000 datatype
He also has submitted the code for his amazing Disk image device that lets you mount a large range of different device images. Such as iso, nrg, adf, hdf, bin and many many more.

Fredrik is also assigned to a project for creating an icon plug-in that uses vector based graphics.

Tuomas Hokka (TSK) has created a project for his amidock like utility called Benchbar.

Simon Archer (Rigo) is assigned to two projects, one to create a new clicktab.gadget class and the other to create a proposal for a new complementary version string to amiga binaries.

Centaurz has volunteered for writing a tutorial/guideline for using prefsobjects to store application specific data.

Vicente Gimeno (ami603) submitted his preliminary work on a workbench file lister.

A list of the assigned projects can be found here.

A lot of help is needed, both on the assigned projects as well as those not yet assigned. If you feel that you are able to contribute then please don't hesitate to join in.

Of the assigned projects, the Workbench file lister project is the one that needs the most help. But any of projects can use your help, just contact any moderator/webmaster or the person assigned to a project using the OpenAmiga message system.

Arcade game: PanzerZ (Preview)
PanzerZ written by Jens Henschel is an arcade game for up to four players. In this game you must shoot the panzers of your oppononents (screenshots: 1, 2). PanzerZ is developed with AmiBlitz and mainly is meant for Amigas with graphic boards - the game uses 32-Bit-graphics which can be scaled from 320x256 to 1280x1024 pixels.

Now a early alpha version of the game is available. This one should work under AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS as well. A version for Amigas without graphic boards is planned but will not be started until the RTG-version will be finished. You can get further information about the game in the forum of a1k.org. MorphOS: Web-Browser Netsurf 2.0dev (beta) (Update)
NetSurf is a browser, originally developed for RiscOS, which can be used with 17 MB memory and e.g. supports HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.1. Netsurf still has not any Javascript support.

The version for MorphOS was done by Ilkka "itix" Lehtoranta and includes a MUI user-interfacee and an IBrowse compatible hotlist.

Netsurf at least requires MorphOS 2.2. The current beta version includes several minor limitations (you cannot change the hotlist, you cannot abort downloads...) which will be fixed during the next two weeks.

Update: If Netsurf does not view any text you have to download the file ttengine.database from the website of the author. Then copy it to the directory ENVARC: After rebooting the system all should work fine.

Text viewer: EvenMore 0.65-4.1.09
The text viewer Evenmore was published. Please note that the configuration files of previous versions are not compatible to this latest version. You have to delete these files before installing the update. Changes in this version:
  • Added a sizing gadget to the window when in borderless mode. This is drawn according to the XEN SysIHack specifications. May design an image for the layering gadget, but this may be more complicated due to the design of the GUI
  • Will also try to find a way of resizing the scrollers instead of removing them and adding them again on every refresh?
  • First of all, you will need to delete your old config file before running the new version! Unfortunately this is due to a minor change in the borderless GUI, which happens to upset loading the old configuration. I don't feel it's worth the effort to make a work around. I have added a horizontal scroll bar to the borderless GUI setting. Once you delete your config file, you need to shift click a document as you open EvenMore, otherwise it just closes again. Or if you are opening from the shell, specify a file on the command line
  • I have also removed several menu items which I felt weren't really needed
  • And I have fixed several issues which prevented EvenMore from opening properly when no config file was available. Check the history page for details
  • Removed text formatting code from AmigaWriter2Text plugin. Text formatting in this fileformat is too complicated to recreate
  • Added fakestack hack code from Aminet so EvenMore will report stack
  • Fixed bug in which switching between right and left reading text would not return the text box to the correct position
  • Horizontal rule in HTML was not rendered properly when right to left text option was enabled
  • Sped up file loading a little by modifying progress bar count code

Individual Computers: Indivision Flash 1.3 / Changes in EU power grid
Press release
Software update for Indivision AGA

The new version 1.3 of the Indivision AGA Flash core now allows separate settings of the sync-polarity for standard- and HighGFX modes. Since some monitors use the polarity to switch between resolutions, this improves user-friendliness a lot, because switching between games and workbanch-based applications does not require any adjustments any more. Games mostly use PAL or NTSC screenmodes, while it's desirable to have the flicker-free high resolutions of HighGFX on the workbench.

Direct download: Indivision_Config_V100.lha

Indivision AGA for the A1200 will be back in the shops shortly. The price remains at 129.- EUR (recommended retail price including German sales tax of 19%). A version for the A4000D computer is planned for march 2009, the price will be identical with the A1200 version.

Changes in EU power grid for 2009

A small detail has been changed for the EU power grid on january 1st, 2009: While the mains nominal voltage remains at 230V, the tolerance has been changed to +/- 10%.

In 1987, Germany has raised the nominal voltage from 220V to 230V. To protect existing devices, the tolerance was set to a lower boundary of -10% and an upper boundary of +6%, resulting in almost the same upper limit of 243V. This was done for a transition period that has ended on january 1st, 2009, so the new upper limit is now over 250V, which can cause more heat generation in older transformer-based power supplies. Modern switchmode-power supplies will presumably not have any problems with the changed tolerance. EU-Countries that have used 240V before (such as England) have lowered their nominal voltage.

Although Commodore was still in business in 1987, power supplies were specified for 220V. We recommend extremely good cooling for this generation of power supplies, and to remove the power plug when the devices are not in use. Protection against over-voltage can be provided by uninterruptable power sources that are independant of the input voltage (VI- and VFI-types). These types are also called "line-interactive" or "Online"-types. "Offline"-types do not offer over-voltage protection.

Increasing the mains voltage can reduce line losses. The relation between transferred energy and line losses gets better with higher voltages, so this can protect the enviroment by reducing CO2 emissions. However, the primary goal of these changes is the EU-wide harmonization of voltages, which has been completed with this final step. (snx)

Hollywood: Application in dental practices
Possibly presentations which were created with Andreas Falkenhahn's Hollywood Designer under AmigaOS 4 will be used in dental practices.

The Norwegian company Ferrule Media has used Hollywood for his commercial product "Dental Kanal" which was introduced on a fair. You can now read a message which was published on the Hollywood-mailing list:

I would like to give you some information about our projects and hopefully inspire other hollywood users. I'm one of the founders of Ferrule Media, a new company that is developing software and information channels to be used in dentistry. We are now in the early process of releasing our software in Norway and Denmark.

I'm a dentist of profession and a former demoscene graphician. Nobody of the Ferrule team has any knowledge about coding. However, Hollywood Designer offered everything we needed in order to make (what we think is) quality software.

Ferrule Media has at the moment finished two projects:

Project 1: Dental Kanal - an information channel to be used in dentists waiting rooms. At the moment we cover 23 topics about dentistry. These topics are displayed to the patients while they wait for their treatment.

Project 2: Dental Info - a program that helps the dentist in the process of informing patients while they get their treatment in the dental-chair. This is done by offering a series of illustrations to cover problems and treatment of different kinds of dental treatment.

On our homepage you will be able to download demos of our programs for Windows and Mac OS. There are also lots of screenshots to show the graphical user-interface and design. Everything is made using AmigaOS 4.1 and Hollywood Designer. The homepage is written in Norwegian and Danish.

We showed Dental Kanal and Dental Info to the public in December 2008 with great success! We believe that 2009 will become an interesting year.

In the end I would like to send some special greetings to Andreas. I'm not sure if all of you are aware of it, but Andreas made some very important additions to Hollywood Designer when he released version 2.1. The ability to import scripts and merge two or more scripts are important if several people are working on the same project. Also, the ability to link all graphics and other files into the main executable is very important to secure the graphics released in our software.

Thanks alot for releasing version 2.1 for free! Also the ability to save executables for both Windows and Mac OS in addition to AmigaOS is amazing. Without these changes and your great support we would not have been able to finish our products. I do hope that more users will buy Hollywood Designer and see what it has to offer.

I would also like to thank PEB for his help and support. He has helped me solving some coding-questions and also made the great tool called text2png (released on OS4Depot). Text2png is a program that allows you to save text into PNG files with alpha-channel. By doing this it is possible to have text displayed on Hollywood PC/Mac executables even if TrueType font support is missing at the moment.

Best regards,
Torgeir Vee

Under the title link Mario Kuban, based on hints from Fabien Coeurjoly, described (in German) how you can use some USB-devices which still did work under MorphOS 1.x but under version 2.0 did not any longer.

When starting you have to deactivate the pciusb.device of the USB-stack called Poseidon from the Open Firmware (boot boot.img mf=pciusb.device) and instead to use Nicolas Det's ehciusb.device 50.9 as well as Frank Mariak's uhciusb.device 51.4 in the preferences of MorphOS. (snx) (Translation: dr)

C-Compiler: vbcc 0.9
vbcc is a C-compiler developed by Volker Barthelmann (compiler-core) and Frank Wille (Amiga specific adaptations). The compiler supports AmigaOS 3/4, MorphOS, PowerUp and WarpOS and corresponds to ISO-C in accordance with ISO/IEC 9899:1989 as well as a subset of the newer standards ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (C99). Changes in version 0.9:
  • Using vasm 1.3c and vlink 0.12 with many improvements.
  • New: vlink 0.12 has experimental support for dynamic linking. The frontend supports a -static option to force static linking.
  • New: -unsigned-char allows a char without qualifier to be treated as unsigned char instead of signed char.
  • New: Target "MiNT" (m68k-atarimint), which is a multitasking operating system for Atari computers. The linker was extended to support the MiNT-specific embedded a.out-format in a TOS exexutables, called aoutmint.
  • Fixed a bug with using bitfields in operations, which occured with -O2 optimization on big-endian hosts.
  • A combination of 64-bit shift and arithmetic-and operations generated illegal code on all targets.
  • Fixed bug with expressions of the form (pointer_type) (non_ptr +/- non_ptr) on machines that allow shortcutting conversion from int to pointer types.
  • Fixed bug with VLA (variable length array, C99) length 0.
  • Fixed illegal optimization of constant indexes in VLAs.
  • The volatile keyword was ignored in some situations when using -O2 optimization or higher.
  • Fixed some problems with incorrect struct-definitions after parse errors.
  • Error and warning messages are redirected to stderr.
  • Warning 224 must not appear, when a function returns the difference between two auto-variables.
  • Exit with a fatal error when an #include-recursion is detected, which means in this case that the nesting-level is > 1023.
  • Fixed __AMIGADATE__, which should add parentheses around the date.
  • Fixed wrong line number after an #include directive, when the line ends with CR/LF.
  • M68k code generator: Shortcut was erroneously used for (int)=(floatvar)/(floatconst)-(floatconst) converting the last floatconst into integer.
  • M68k code generator: __interrupt had a discrepancy between the number of saved and restored registers.
  • M68k code generator: Link register A5 got overwritten by local variables when used for a VLA.
  • M68k code generator: Used an address register as DBRA counter for a struct-push operation at -O1.
  • M68k code generator: For compatibility the __stdargs modifier is supported now, but ignored.
  • M68k code generator: Wrong adressing Mode An,<ea> for ADD occured sometimes with -O3 optimization.
  • PPC code generator: variables with a natural size of 8 (double precision float) have to be aligned to a 64-bit boundary, as not all PPC CPUs support 32-bit alignment.
  • PPC code generator: VLAs didn't work inside of a structure.
  • PPC code generator: 64-bit arguments were sometimes unnecessarily "extended" from 32 to 64 bits under PowerOpen-ABI (WarpOS).
  • i386 code generator: Fixed some 64-bit integer bugs.
  • C16x code generator: Better shift code generation.
  • C16x code generator: Fixed bug with save_result and r==tp.
  • vclib: Made freopen() depend on fopen() to make sure that the destructor which closes all open files is called.
  • vclib m68k: Returned sign of modulo operation was wrong in the cases (+)%(-) and (-)%(-).
  • vclib PowerUp: Fixed libpowerup.so, which can be generated by vlink now.

Database: MUIbase 2.7
Steffen Gutmann has published an update of his database MUIbase. Changes in version 2.7:
  • Implemented quick search for user functions popups
  • Merged settings for updating virtual attributes ('On different record' and 'On dependent change') into one setting 'Auto update'
  • New 'Enabled' setting for attributes and window buttons: 'Always enabled' 'Disabled in initial', and 'Compute enabled' with optional compute function
  • Changing the active line in a list of a virtual attribute causes the update of objects depending on the attribute. This allows e.g. to enable or disable buttons depending on the active list entry
  • GETDISABLED, SETDISABLED, GETWINDOWDISABLED and SETWINDOWDISABLED are now obsolete. When an obsolete functions is called, it can be ignored silently, a warning can be generated, or an error be reported
  • Command strings for external editor and view can contain '%p' which is replaced by the name of the public screen MUIbase has been opened (Amiga only)
  • New function for programming: PUBSCREEN which returns the name of the public screen MUIbase is running on or NIL if the screen is not public. On Linux and Windows, PUBSCREEN always returns NIL.
  • The window dimensions of structure editor, query editor and program editor are now also remembered on Windows and Linux
  • Improved handling of illegal UTF-8 sequences and codeset conversion errors
  • Several bug fixes

The MUIbase distribution contains ports for AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Sputnik-bounties will be payed back
According to Troels Ersking who is the initiator of a bounty program which should adapt the Sputnik to AmigaOS 4, he canceled this program and hopes to pay back the bounties until the end of the year.

The author of Sputnik, Marcin 'Marcik' Kwiatkowski, had recently announced that he only had to change the MUI 4 component to MUI 3.x which will require about two more months of development but because of "missing communication, slow development and not-met deadlines" the bounty-program was now canceled.

Update: (12:48, 27.12.08, snx)
Menawhile Troels Ersking has given detailed information about the restitution of the bounties. He asks all donators to contact him with their names and their PayPal-E-Mail-addresses as well as the request how the money should be used.

The money can be payed back as well as it can be donated for different bounty programs. If you will not contact him until 31st January 2009 the money will be given to projects of other ports of web browsers (NetSurf or OWB). (snx) (Translation: dr)

Carsten Siegner's DVD-Engine is an user-interface for a lot of existing command line programs which is supposed to make it more easy to create video or picture-DVDs. Now alpha version 0.2 is available which the author decribed in this way:

"I uploaded an update of my program DVD-Engine to my server. This update includes a new main feature which makes it possible to create subtitles. Per chapter you can create one subtitle. Variable times of fading out and in as well as subtitles consisting of several lines are possible. If you want to create a video-DVD it is now also possible to set the picture aspect. Additionally some bugs have been fixed.
