IBrowse 2.5: Interview with Oliver Roberts
The release of IBrowse 2.5 - 13 years after the latest update of the only web browser specifically created for the Amiga that is still in development - started an argument in the german comments section of our related news-item with regard to its price/performance ratio. A good reason for our editor Daniel Reimann to talk about this to the main developer of IBrowse, Oliver Roberts.
In the preliminary talk to the actual interview found below, confronted with a certain disappointment of our readers regarding the features of version 2.5 and their critique of the price, the developer expressed his understanding in both cases, but pointed out that it had always been made clear what IBrowse 2.5 was going to be - and that it had been never promised to include CSS or HTML5; instead the plan had just been to deliver an AmigaOS 4 native version. And regarding the price, Oliver Roberts would like to advise users to only think about paying for what is available at the time of purchase and not the hope of something which may or may not be added in the future.

AmigaKit acquired AK-Datatypes
According to a press release (PDF file) of the British retailer, distributor and manufacturer of Amiga computer hardware and software, AmigaKit, it has acquired the graphics datatypes developed by Andreas Kleinert since he "had to stop due general lack of time and ability to further commit to the platform." For five years his image processing program SView has also been up for sale.
AmigaKit is going to distribute the AK-Datatypes as well as bundle them with other products. With regard to existing customers AmigaKit plans "to offer concessions against future upgrades."

AmigaOS 4: Commercial FTP server ZitaFTP (prerelease)
Hans de Ruiter (Warp 3D Nova, Radeon-2D driver) has developed a FTP server for AmigaOS, which probably will be also ported to Windows. This is a prerelease which according to the developer "means that there are rough edges there are missing features, the biggest one being the configuration GUI. A web based GUI is planned". Several licence versions are available starting with a single user licence for 40 Euro up to a licence for 10 installations for 160 Euro.

AROS: IconPoser 1.0 - Icon manipulation program for Icaros Desktop
The author wrote: "IconPoser is a Lua based icon compositing/manipulation program for Icaros Desktop, which creates AROS compatible, double-state icons from two different images in PNG format. Just select an image for the relaxed status and another one for the selected status and click the "Join&Save" button to compose your new .info file!
IconPoser can create icons for your tools, your drawers and your projects. It can set stack size for tools, default tool for projects and copy tooltypes to your new icon from a different one. It can replace an existing icon either keeping original tooltypes or not, and it also checks for mistakes, when trying to overwrite a common file with a icon."

AmigaOS 4: Scripts for Streaming Twitch.tv and Mixer.com videos
George 'walkero' Sokianos writes: If you use to watch your beloved Amiga and Retro streamers on Twitch.tv or Mixer.com, but you do that on your PC, and that doesn't feel authentic, don't worry any more. There is aiostreams to help you watch them on the Workbench of your AmigaOS 4 system.
aiostreams is a package of Python scripts that help you watch live or recorded streams from many online video platforms. At least, that's what it wishes to be. Right now Twitch.tv and Mixer.com are supported, but there are plans for more to be added in the future.

Web browser: IBrowse 2.5 available
Press release: 30th August 2019 - Oliver Roberts and the IBrowse Team are pleased to announce the immediate release of IBrowse 2.5 for AmigaOS 3.x and 4.x. After many years in the making, development has been on a roller coaster since IBrowse 2.4, with challenging personal, technical and commercial issues complicating the release schedule. However, we are extremely happy to finally make this new version available to all the valued users who have been waiting so patiently.
IBrowse 2.5 fixes many bugs, making it the most stable and fastest version yet, but more importantly brings modern SSL/TLS support and a fully native AmigaOS 4.x build. Below is a very brief summary of the key changes since version 2.4:
- Brand new OS4 PPC native version. This is not a simple port, but we have taken great care to ensure it fully utilises of all the relevant new features avaiable in OS4 and as such requires a minimum of OS4.1 Final Edition. Uses the new graphics.library RTG system, dropping CyberGraphX support completely. Other features include faster image rendering using hardware compositing, anti-aliased text rendering and proper daylight saving time handling.
- Support for AmiSSLv4 has been added to IBrowse 2.5, allowing the use of the most up to date SSL implementation available for AmigaOS, including TLSv1.3, based on the most recent versions of OpenSSL.
- Integrated with new MUI 4.0 and 5.0 features, including new context sensitive mouse pointers, support for various built-in MUI menus and other new GUI additions. MUI 3.8 is still supported (although we recommend 3.9 as a minimum).
- Browser spoofing strings can now be customised in a variety of different ways with up to 128 user defined strings available in the preferences.
- All the internal image decoders have been improved, with various fixes, alpha channel handling, and speed optimisations. The JPEG and PNG decoders now fully utilise the decoding improvements and optimisations from the current Warp Datatypes, which also includes AltiVec acceleration in the JPEG decoder.
- Full alpha channel support on >= 15-bit displays (OS4 only).
- 4Gb+ file handling and downloads, with files bigger than 2Gb now being handled properly in the GUI (OS4 only).
- The OpenSearch standard is now supported for allowing search engines to automatically be added to the search bar, in addition to the existing older Sherlock/Mycroft support from IBrowse 2.4.
- TextEditField object has had an overhaul, fixing various issues and adding new features. Rendering is done in a more MUI4/5 compatible manner allowing these objects to inherit your MUI settings. Your mousewheel can now be used for scrolling and various MUI defined keyboard shortcuts are now honoured.
- Improved general stability and memory leaks plugged.
- Hundreds of other minor and major bug fixes + improvements, and increased tolerance of broken sites for better compatibility.
Editorial note: Also for existing customers, the update is not available for free: if you watn to use the demo version without any limitations you have to purchase a keyfile. The full version costs 54 Euro and you will get the 68k as well as the PPC version for it. Upgrades of previous versions cost 45 Euro (upgrades of IBrowse 1.x) or 30 Euro (IBrowse 2.x). If you are going to upgrade only your AmigaOS 3 version, you only have to pay 15 or 30 Euro depending on version of the existing keyfile.

Audio player: AmigaAMP3 3.25 (update)
Thomas Wenzel wrote: This version mainly provides bug fixes and stability improvements. As new feature the AmigaOS-4 version now also supports the mpega.library for decoding MP2/MP3.
As user you can now choose between the traditional AMP (giving the name to the application) and MPEG-A. MPEG-A is available as highly optimized fixed point version which, in particular, requires few computing time under QEMU-based emulations (WinUAE).
Update: (27.08.2019, 06:15, dr)
Upon request of amiga-news.de Thomas Wenzel confirmed the experiences of a reader that AmigaAMP 3.25 cannot read WAV/AIFF files. This support was skipped by introducing version 3 of the 68k version. Thomas Wenzel cannot remember the exact reason for it but will examine it.
