Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 Below we have the second big announcement in recent days by the
reborn Amiga Inc. This one concerns the "content platform foundation
partner" for future development. Not sure yet what all is covered by
that mouth numbing phrase but I am sure it will be interesting and, I
hope, encouraging to watch this relationship.
 There seems to be much more a feeling of relief in the shrunken Amiga
Community at this ownership change than there was when Gateway took
over, and that's as it should be. If we don't make it this time, at
least we finally have some Amigans with vision giving it a try. If
only that had happened back in 1994 ...

 We don't have an actual story on it, but if you read the items below
carefully you'll see that Amino is now Amiga. The change took place on
January 6. They'll be at the Amiga 2000 computer show this spring in
St. Louis, USA, and I can hardly wait. I believe this will be the
first chance for the newest Amiga Inc. to address a large body of the
community. If you can get there, it should be well worth your time.
 If I have my Amiga history right, this is the third Amiga Inc. to be
set up. The original development company (or were they not an Inc.?),
Gateway's, and now the former Amino. Correct?

brad,

 just a quick note to say "keep up the good work" ! i enjoy receiving
this e-publication. also, let me add that i prefer this "e-mail style
" as opposed to the old "download style "!!!! makes it easier for me
to read.

best,
dave
~~~~~~
Dave,
 Thanks very much for the note and the vote of confidence. Not sure
who's old download style you mean as we've always been e-mail based,
but I think I know what you're getting at. It's always been one of our
goals to get the news out to people, rather than wait for someone to
come to a website. We think the Amiga community needs both, and our
method can help get the message to people who would never see the
websites.
 In other words, they have the right to develop something and call it
an Amiga, but not to make or sell any of the old hardware, possibly
the OS either. Then again, that might not to be a bad thing. We all
know how far behind the current hardware and OS are.
 When Tom Schmidt announced that Amiga wasn't going to be a computer
platform anymore, I started looking at the alternatives. I figured
there were three; Linux, Mac and (GULP!) Windows.
 - Linux is a Unix variant at heart. Switching to it meant night
school courses just to learn to use it. (I still haven't entirely
ruled that out.)
 - My GF uses a Mac and she's happy with it. I looked at the new iMacs
and they're nice machines, reminiscent in some ways of my good ol'
A1200, and the price wasn't too bad, considering what it was. Then I
took a gander at the software and nearly had a coronary! $800 for a
paint program???
 - Then there's Windows. I tried to look it up on the 'net. At first
all I found were jokes pages. I surfed over a few of them. It was
educational; nobody likes Windows! At last I found MS's homepage. The
first thing I saw there was ol' Visa Bill Gate's editorial about
"freedom to innovate," (whinging over the Anti-Trust Court obviously.)
By this time I was wondering what had possessed me to even consider
doing this to myself!
 I hope to heck Amino makes a go of Amiga. There are no good
alternatives out there.
        Allan
~~~~~~
Allan,
 I certainly agree with the sentiment in your last paragraph. It's
very early to have a feel for how Amino - now officially Amiga Inc. -
will do, but they've got the community in mind and that's a real plus.
 You do have one misconception in your note. Amiga Inc. has a license
from Gateway to the old patents, so there's really nothing stopping
them from doing just about anything they want to, including building
"classic" type machines if they wish.
 With the new Amiga in place, I think there's at least a good
possibility we won't need an alternative.

 Las Vegas, January 8, 2000 - Amiga Incorporated, a privately held
company based in Maple Valley, WA, has entered into a strategic
relationship with the Tao Group as the new content platform foundation
partner for the new Amiga. Terms of the transaction were not
disclosed. Bill McEwen, Amiga President/CEO, said that the company
selected Tao as the foundation partner for the new Amiga after
reviewing numerous other potential partners. "After extensive research
trawling the markets we found that Tao had the greatest similarities
and strengths with our vision, and the capabilities to get the job
done". McEwen said. "Amiga with Tao together will bring a new level of
capabilities, portability and scalability never available before."
"Tao has its roots in the Amiga so this is particularly satisfying for
us" said Francis Charig, Chairman and CEO of Tao Group. "What makes
this relationship so exciting to Tao is the relationship we can enjoy
with Amiga and the Amiga Community. The world has changed radically in
the last few years and there is a vacuum in terms of content and
software environments that meets the needs of the mass market. The
skill sets of the Amiga community combined with the power and
flexibility of Tao's software infrastructure means that the New Amiga
can create the most compelling content for the emerging digital
services and content markets."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 ShadowWorks Software regrets to announce the end of the NewsRog
project for the Amiga. NewsRog is an NNTP News client running on Amiga
personal computers.

 Unfortunately, due to a combination of factors which include the lack
of a market for Amiga software, obsolescent hardware, and a recent
increase in piracy and fraudulent credit card orders, it is no longer
financially possible to continue developing NewsRog. The last version
stands at 1.8b, and the update is available to all registered users
via the web page below:

     http://www.frii.com/~srk/ShadowWorks/Preview/NR.html

 ShadowWorks Software is proud to have pioneered a large number of
news client features that have yet to be duplicated in any other
software that we are aware of. We regret that it was not possible to
continue development of the software, since there was a great deal
more planned for the future.

 ShadowWorks Software wishes to thank all of our loyal customers who
have supported our attempt to bring the Amiga a world class NNTP news
client.

HobbyTronic Computerschau 2000
Weiterlesen ... (ps)

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 Wow...
 So much has happened recently, it's hard to know where to start.
 Allright, the bad news first. The first Amiga monthly magazine,
"Amazing Computing" is dead. It was also the last US Amiga magazine.
This is incredibly sad, especially as it just missed making it into
the new era of "Amiga by Amino", as announced in our recent special
edition. We don't know the details, and I'm not sure I want to. It
would be depressing. However, this is a real loss for North American
Amigans and the hurt will be felt for a very long time.
 Also sad, and this for the entire Amiga community, not just us North
Americans, is the death of CUCUG's Amiga Web Directory. The
cornerstone of the Amiga community on the web, it also just missed the
new era. Rumor has it other sites offered to take the Web Directory
over, and were turned down. If true, that's mind numbing. We really
don't know the details here either, but we will miss them.
 Now, the good news. There really is some, and it's quite good!
 The Amiga Community will survive, for some time to come. The computer
has a new owner, with a plan for the future (that's almost enough to
cause shock in old time Amigans) and a genuine, deep respect and love
for the Amiga and the Community. This is a bit hard to cope with after
recent events, but it's true.
 It's also true they have a rough road ahead of them. Success is by no
means guaranteed. But they'll be traveling the road with the best
computer community that ever existed. If that combination can't build
a meaningful future, then there's very little that can.
 The plan will be revealed to us in the next few months, and
apparently goes well beyond desktop machines. It's going to be an
interesting new era - we'll keep you posted.
 Finally, this new era seems to have room for Petro Tyschtschenko and
his work in Germany. In our opinion, while Jay Miner is the father of
the Amiga, Petro is the godfather or something similar. We're pleased
to see he's still involved. There's no one who's worked harder for the
Amiga's future over the years.
 While we're at it - for you gamers, the library of Quake related
games have been released for people to port, and work is well underway
for PPC Amigas. For those who love these games, the fun is just
beginning.
 Below, the first Executive Update from the Amiga web site, now under
the control of Amino Development.
 We love it!

January 3, 2000

YeeHaw and welcome to the year 2000;

 I want to make something very clear from the beginning we have been
told, that Amiga was purchased by Gateway because of the Patents, and
that there were not even aware of the Amiga installed base, or the
people.

 Gateway purchased Amiga because of Patents, we purchased Amiga
because of the People.

 Without the people standing behind, developing, creating, purchasing
and continuing to believe in the Amiga there never would have been
anything for Gateway to purchase. We recognize this, and it is because
of you, and what you have continued to accomplish with Amiga that we
have purchased the company.

 I want to make sure that everyone knows and understands what this all
means to you the true Amigans.

 Here is what was acquired from Gateway:

 1. All trademarks logos etc.

 2. All existing inventory of Amiga International

 3. All existing licenses.

 4. License to All Amiga patents (Gateway still owns the patents, but
we are able to use them).

 5. All web sites, and registered domain names.

 6. The Amiga OS and all that is associated with the OS.

 7. The Amiga operation as it exists today.

 Specific details of the developer system, the OS partners and how one
can begin developing will be released in the next couple of weeks.

 We will be making an announcement on January 8th, 2000 with one of
our partners at CES in Las Vegas, and more details will follow that
release.

 Fleecy, Myself, Petro, and the rest of the team are not going to make
promises and create presentations and demos. We are going to deliver
products, services, and the rest of the world will know what you have
already known.

 We will be officially changing the name of Amino Development
Corporation to the Amiga Corporation this week, and we will let
everyone know of this change shortly once it is officially completed.

 I want to thank all of you for your continued support we will make
Amiga what it should have been, and more importantly what it will be.

 Keeping the faith,

Bill McEwen President/CEO
Amino Development Corporation

COSA Reaction to Amino Purchase of Amiga Rights

January 2, 2000

 Within the past few days, ownership of the Amiga rights, trademarks
and technology passed from Gateway to Amino Development. People have
asked for COSA's opinion on the sale, and for comments how this
affects the campaign to open-source the AmigaOS.

 We believe the sale of Amiga to Amino is a good, positive step
forward for the Amiga community, and that the new owners of the Amiga
technology rights are the right people to steer the Amiga technology
into the new millennium.

 COSA have known Fleecy Moss, co-founder of Amino, for quite some
time, and have been in e-mail discussions on a number of matters of
mutual interest, including Open Source, for quite some considerable
time. We have a good working relationship, and a mutual understanding
of what needs to be done to bring the Amiga into the new millennium.

 COSA is confident, based on our discussions with Fleecy, that Amino
has the vision and direction necessary, to take the Amiga into the new
millennium. The major difference to their predecessors being that
Amino truely understands the Amiga technology, and is receptive to the
needs, ideas and inspirations of the Amiga community. (The management
of Amino are, afterall, Amigans themselves.)

 We await the announcements from Amino in the weeks and months ahead
with much anticipation, and look forward to a hopefully long and
productive working relationship with them.

Congratulations, Guys!
Steve Crietzman, and the team at COSA

 January 1, 2000 - The Champaign- Urbana Computer Users Group (CUCUG)
announced today that it has retired its popular, award-winning Amiga
Web Directory (AWD) web site.

 Citing continuing declines in the Amiga marketplace and Gateway's
failure to deliver new Amiga computer systems, CUCUG reluctantly
decided to discontinue its popular web site link directory and news
service on January 1, 2000. It was felt that while CUCUG could
continue with the AWD for several months, it was better to retire now
rather than allow the site to slowly decline with the market. CUCUG is
hopeful that the latest owners of the Amiga can turn this market
around for the developers and users who have held on throughout all
the past ownership changes and other difficulties the Amiga has faced.

 For over five years, the Amiga Web Directory served as one of the
most-visited Amiga-oriented web sites on the Internet. Its carefully
cataloged listings of Amiga web sites was the most-respected
collection of its kind. Each site in the AWD's listings was reviewed
by the CUCUG webmaster to ensure quality and Amiga orientation. Site
descriptions were carefully prepared by hand, resulting in accuracy
not possible on other machine- driven sites or those which allow site
owners to write their own descriptions.

 The AWD's Amiga news pages became one of the most imitated features
in the Amiga web community. Dozens of Amiga news sites were inspired
by the success of the Amiga Web Directory's hugely popular news pages.

 A well-known offshoot of the Amiga Web Directory was "Agnes" the
Amiga web searching service. Agnes was also a cartoon character which
personalized the searching service. In addition to the over-2000 Amiga
sites cataloged in the Amiga Web Directory, Agnes could search the
general Internet for Amiga content, newsgroup messages, CUCUG Status
Register newsletters and other Amiga-oriented materials.

 The Amiga Web Directory was one of the first member-supported Amiga
web sites. Amiga enthusiasts joined the CUCUG organization to show
their support for the efforts of the group. These memberships covered
the costs associated with running the popular web service and other
CUCUG activities. CUCUG is very grateful to its members' support which
it has received over the years. The group also acknowledges the many
Amiga-oriented companies which have given assistance.

 CUCUG, which has been supporting local computer users in the
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois area since 1983 will now focus its efforts
on local user group activities.

 "Amiga Update" has received confirmation from several sources that
PIM Publication's "Amazing Computing" has recently filed for
bankruptcy. "Amazing" was the first - and the last - monthly Amiga
magazine in the US and its presence will be sorely missed.
 While it is certainly possible for businesses to survive a bankruptcy
and continue into the future, we have no indications that such will be
the case with "Amazing". It is ironic that as Amiga itself is in the
process of a potential rebirth, we have lost both CUCUG and "Amazing
Computing"

 Amigan-St. Louis is happy to announce the addition of Nova Design,
Inc. to it's growing list of exhibitors.

 The ever popular Gateway Computer Shows, including the new Amiga 2K
show in St. Louis on April1 & 2, 2000, have always been very popular
with Amiga Computer fans.

 This newest addition of Nova Design, Inc. and others is just one more
step in the growing list of companies that will exhibit at the largest
Amiga show in the Americas. Please see the "Show" page in the site
listed below.

 In additon, you can find the "Club Table Contest" described on the
"Contest" page of the Amiga 2K site. This is an excellent chance for
an Amiga Club to showcase it's abilities, and show off the Amiga,
while possibly winning a prize for their efforts.

January 3, 2000

 Amigan-St. Louis is pleased to announce a discount for clubs
exhibiting at the Gateway Computer Show - Amiga 2K©. The discount is
40% off of the normal price. This is a substantial discount, that is
only available to clubs, and only available when utilizing an eight
foot table. It is a limited time offer.

 The pricing can be determined by looking at the price guide for eight
foot tables under the "Exhibitors" button on the show page at:
http://www.amiga-stl.com/show.html Then simply multiply 60% times that
price to determine the price a club would pay.

 Example: An eight foot table space is 9' x 6' or 54 square feet. The
price per square foot is $6. So 54 x 6 = $324. That's the normal
price. Then multiply $324 x 60% to get $194.40. This is what the club
will pay for their table. Eight foot tables can be shared by two
groups if necessary. This would further reduce the cost to a club. The
cost of the table does not include any admissions to the show. All
persons in the club must purchase an admission.

 All in all, this is a substantial discount. It is being given due to
the tremendous support clubs have given to the Amiga. Without the
clubs, there would be no Amiga. So to reward them and their hard
working members, we are giving this discount so they will not deplete
their club treasury to exhibit at Amiga 2K

 AmIRC was the first VaporWare application to be shown to the Amiga
world. Its author, Oliver Wagner, has worked too many late nights on
the program to count, and continues to update it to this day.

 AmIRC's main strengths lie in its interface - it's one of the easiest
IRC clients to use on any platform, yet it also keeps the power users
happy with advanced ARexx scripting and its plugin API, allowing
unique new features to be added. It also features a URL grabber to
capture any URLs mentioned in any channels or query windows, a
lag-o-meter to measure your system's lag from the server, and strong
builtin flood protection including a staggered output queue to stop
you flooding yourself off the server.

 For IRCing on the Amiga, AmIRC should be your number one choice.

 Please remember, AmIRC is shareware. If you use it, please register
the software and help support Amiga software development.

 Download AmIRC 3.3 and see why it's the best IRC client for the
Amiga. If you registered AmIRC 1.x or AmIRC 2.x, you can update to
version 3.3.

 There is an AmIRC Mailing List run by VaporWare for users to discuss
the software. Please feel free to sign up for it, your question may be
answered there.

Features

 o Advanced Low Level Plugin API.
 o Single Window Iconification.
 o Lag-o-meter shows lag from the server
 o Individual window logging.
 o Intuitive channel window with userlist and mode display.
 o Builtin high speed DCC drivers, incl. Secure Chat.
 o ARexx port includes event trapping.
 o IRCNet and UnderNet extensions.
 o Oper and clone announcement.

 o Builtin IdentD, disables itself if needed.
 o Bind sound effects, auto deiconify or ARexx to events.
 o Last nick history, TAB key cycles through.
 o URL grabber saves any URLs to send to your web browser.
 o Supports colored text for both input (WYSIWIG) and output.
 o CTCP/DCC flood protection.
 o Timestamping of lines and inline clickable URLs.

Thursday, 23rd December 1999

 Today we announce the availability of a new Amiga next generation
PowerPC OS project, called MorphOS, to the public.

 In its current state it provides a modern memory protection
microkernel which runs a virtual amiga emulation. This microkernel
will be the base for a new OS layer.

 Research for this project started in early 1998, while at the end of
1998 an early implementation was ready. In 1999, we started on the
virtual amiga emulation to make the current AmigaOS available without
requiring 68K hardware. The basic design goals behind MorphOS are

- memory protection
- resource tracking
- asynchronous message system
- low interrupt latency
- virtual memory (optional)
- distributed computing
- symmetrical multi processing (SMP)
- recursive memory management
- task/thread and clan/chief model
- clean design with an elegant API
- micro/pico kernel mixture

The developer release is planned for end of January. Minimum system
requirements are
- A4000 with CyberStorm PPC/604e and Symbios 770 SCSI
- CyberVisionPPC
- at least 32MB memory installed
- Kickstart 3.1 (Version 40.68) and Workbench 3.1 or up
Hardware requirements might change as soon as more hardware setups are
tested and implemented.

 As the success of this project will also depend on your
feedback/support, we suggest that interested developers visit our
project webpage for a general MorphOS overview and information on how
to join us to help.

Feel free to enter the project webpage at

(ps)

Amino Development Buys Amiga Name, Inventory From Gateway

 SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31 -- Amino Development Corp., a privately held
company based in Maple Valley, Washington, has purchased from Gateway
its Amiga trademarks and Amiga computer systems. Terms of the
transaction have not been disclosed.

 According to Peter Ashkin, Gateway senior vice president, Gateway
chose to sell the name after deciding to fold Amiga's software
engineering function into Gateway's product development. This merger
of development activities is part of Gateway's overall strategy to
develop and market the coming generation of "Internet appliances".

 "Amiga, as a personal computer brand, has a loyal following of fans
around the world," Ashkin said. "Under Gateway's wing, Amiga morphed
into a software development company working on a new Internet
appliance operating environment software. Now that we're bringing that
development work into Gateway product development, it made sense to
find a buyer for Amiga."

 "Yee-haw " said Bill McEwen, president and CEO of Amino. "This is a
very exciting day, and now an even more exciting tomorrow. Now we can
finish the job that was started 15 years ago."

 The transaction, effective immediately, includes the transfer of all
Internet domain names related to Amiga which Gateway had held. Gateway
retains ownership of all patents acquired when it bought Amiga in
1997.

Bericht vom Chaos Communication Congress

Andere Hinweise habe man bewusst ausgeblendet.» Weiterlesen ... (ps)

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 The old saying "the only constant is change" is certainly true in the
Amiga community. It sometimes seems that you can't count on anything
staying the same from one day to the next.
 Unfortunately, much of the change we've seen in this year now ending
has been anything but good. The most recent change seems to be the
sudden vanishing of the "Amiga's" only remaining North American print
publication.
 We can tell you this, however. There are a lot of people working very
hard to make changes that will ensure a future for the Amiga. There's
just not much to say about these activities right at the moment. We'll
keep you informed as we are able.

Take a look at Amiga Realm
--------------------------
 Received a note a while back from our friend Paul Andrews in the UK
suggesting we take a look at his site "Amiga Realm". He reports he's
been working long and hard on it in the last few months. The effort
shows. It's well worth your stopping by if you haven't, with a wealth
of Amiga information. Find it at:

http://www.amigarealm.com

 We have a wide variety of stories to bring your way this time, and
it's all pretty much positive for once! Hope this brightens up your
day. For those of you celebrating one holiday or another at this time
of the year, we wish you all the joy such holidays can bring! To all
our readers, we say thanks for being with us throughout 1999, and we
hope to have a prosperous, pleasant and re-invigorating last year of
the century with you and Amiga in 2000!
 Best regards,

15 Dec 1999

Hello Brad,

 Any idea as to what has happened to Amazing? I haven't received any
mag. for three months I have made 5 or 6 calls to their phone # and
all I get is a taped message to fax or E-Mail. I've e-mailed Don Hicks
several times and have gotten no response.

 PS thanks for keeping Amiga Update going I feel like it is the only
Amiga resource I can depend on.

Kind regards
--
Don S.
~~~~~~
Don,
 I have no idea - and I did try to find out. We've received several
letters similar to yours. It's very disappointing - and disconcerting
- to have the venerable "Amazing" just pull an amazing vanishing act.
 Don Hicks, are you still there?
The following announcement was posted recently on the web site of
Holger Kruse, developer of many of the Amiga's best pieces of
software:
Changes for the year 2000
 I am happy to announce that starting January, 2000 I will work for
REBOL Technologies in the capacity of Director of Network
Technologies.
 For those of you who have not heard about that company before: REBOL
Technologies (www.rebol.com) is a privately held company that was
founded by Carl Sassenrath, one of the premier developers of AmigaOS.
REBOL Technologies develops and distributes the scripting language
REBOL, a very intuitive programming language and run-time environment
with built-in Internet support and messaging capabilities. REBOL is
available for over 50 computer platforms, AmigaOS being one of them.
The basic version of REBOL is available for free, extensions are
available for license fees.
 Declining revenues from Amiga software sales and increased software
piracy in 1999 finally forced me to look for a full-time job outside
of my own company. Between several job offers I decided to accept the
offer by REBOL for several reasons. The most important one is that in
my opinion REBOL is currently one of the few truly innovative products
in the software market, and with Carl Sassenrath's history with
AmigaOS his company and its product in many ways reflect and represent
the Amiga spirit.
 With my background in AmigaOS and TCP/IP I am excited about the
opportunity to participate in the development of REBOL, in particular
in the improvement of its networking capabilities, the AmigaOS port
and ports for possible Amiga successors.
 I am afraid this new job means that I will no longer be able to work
full-time on my own Amiga software (Miami, Daytona etc.). This does
not mean that the software becomes unsupported or that I am leaving
the Amiga platform though. I intend to still provide updates and
support for existing software, as my time permits. Here are some
details about current plans for my Amiga software:
 - AmiWin: still supported. An update with 24-bit support and a newer
X11R6 kernel is still planned, but unlikely to be ready soon.
 - Daytona and related products: I am afraid Daytona and its planned
extensions have to be cancelled. There are two reasons for this: one
is lack of time: with my new full-time job I have to cut back
somewhere, and doing it on a project that is still in development
seems to be the most reasonable solution. The other reason is a
possible conflict of interests, because Java and REBOL are competitors
in the market of languages for distributed computing, which may make
it unethical for me to remain involved in Java-related software. I
have not yet determined what will happen to the Daytona sources. There
are several options, somewhat restricted by Sun's licensing
conditions, and I will try to find a solution that will somehow still
allow the existing Java VM of Daytona to be released to the Amiga
community, without future involvement or support from me though.
 - Miami: still fully supported. Version 3.3 is planned for release in
the year 2000.
 - Miami Deluxe: fully supported. After several delays and many
improvements the first full release including documentation will
probably be ready before Christmas, and after that development will
continue. Subject to demand the planned improvements for future
versions may include IPv6, IPsec, named, extensions to IP-NAT and
possibly dial-in support.
 - MiamiSSL: fully supported. A new version that incorporates the
latest OpenSSL changes and protocols is planned.
 - MiamiTelnet: fully supported, as part of the Miami Deluxe package.
Telnet encryption and support for running in a shell window are
planned for future versions.
 - ppp.device: still supported, but no new versions are planned. Miami
and Miami Deluxe should be considered successors of ppp.device.
 - ReOrg: not supported at this time. A version with support for NSD
and disks > 4 GB is something I am considering though, time
permitting.
 I will also have to move my residence from Winter Park, Florida to
Ukiah, California, where REBOL headquarters are located. This means my
LAN will have to move as well, including the server that handles Miami
registrations and orders. Because of that there will be some service
outages affecting my Internet presence during the months of December
'99 and possibly January 2000. Please see my separate announcements
about that. On the up side, chances are my LAN will get a DSL
connection in Ukiah, which should provide better reliability and much
faster responses, in particular for mailing lists, than the current
56k connection.
 Wishing everyone a happy holiday season and a successful year 2000.
 COSA HEADQUARTERS -- December 22, 1999 -- COSA (the Campaign to
Open-Source AmigaOS) today officially launched it's new sister
project, the Open Amiga Group, at Amigakernel.org.
 The Open Amiga Group has been created, in the spirit of the Christmas
season, to encourage and help developers, by providing a system where
Amiga projects and applications can be openned up to the contributions
of a team of Amiga developers, using the open-source model as a guide.
It is hoped this will lead to the creation of new high-quality Amiga
applications, and to the revival of stalled or abandoned projects,
which could be continued by a team of open-source Amiga programmers.
 Amiga developers will be able to use the Amigakernel.org website to
join existing projects (currently aMozillaX and AROS, with AmigaOS "in
reserve"), or to easily create projects of their own using the forms
available on the Amigakernel.org website.
 Through a variety of mailing lists, the Open Amiga Group will keep
developers who have registered with us informed of the latest projects
that are being set up, and in contact with other developers working on
the same projects. (It is our intention there be a mailing list for
users and a mailing list for developers for each project hosted by the
Open Amiga group.)
 Open-source projects can then either be hosted by Open Amiga using
our own resources - website, mailing list and tools (and the resources
of sourceforge.net), or we can simply provide links and references to
your own websites, mailing lists and tools.
 The Open Amiga project is a natural extention of COSA's charter,
which is to promote open-source within the Amiga community, and to
campaign for the release of the Amiga operating system as open source.
(It should be noted that negotiations with Amiga Inc's Tom Schmidt on
this matter are ongoing.) We also felt it would be wasteful not to
offer the 130 developers who have already registered with COSA as
"probable developers for an open-source AmigaOS" a chance to work on
other projects.
 For more information, or to register as a developer, or register an
existing open-source Amiga project on our pages, please visit
http://www.amigakernel.org to visit the Open Amiga Group's website, or
http://cosa.amigakernel.org for more information on COSA, the Campaign
to Open-Source AmigaOS, and for the latest news on the status of our
negotiations with Amiga Inc.
 In the spirit of this season of co-operation and friendship, we wish
the Amiga community a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May
the millennium mark a turning point in the Amiga's history, where we
finally reap the mainstream attention and respect that our platform
and it's powerful, speedy OS deserve.
New COSA Country Contacts for Germany and Portugal
December 7, 1999
 COSA are pleased to announce the creation of two new "country
contacts". Country Contacts are COSA members who have volunteered to
act as representatives for COSA in their home country and provide
translation services.
 There are current two Country Contacts. They are Volker Mohr from
Germany, who runs the Project IMP website, and Rui Manuel, from
Portugal.
 If you speak German (Deutsch) or Portugese (Portuguese), you should
feel free to contact either Volker or Rui and discuss any comments,
questions or suggestions you have about COSA or Open Source with them.
They'll be happy to help you.
 COSA wants to take this time to thank Volker and Rui for their help,
and for providing this valuable service. With their help, COSA is also
to reach out to people in other countries.
 Volker and Rui are also helping to translate the COSA webpages into
German and Portugese, and these translations will be put online when
they are ready. But this is hard work, so why not drop them an e-mail
and thank them? Or offer to help? They'd like to hear from you!
 English-speakers should still feel free to write to me, Steve
Crietzman. I will try my best to respond as quickly as I am able.
 Once again, our thanks to Volker and Rui! Welcome aboard the COSA
Team! :-)
-- Steve, Volker, Rui, and the ever-growing COSA Team
 {NOTE: the story didn't give information on how to contact these
folks. You might start at http://www.savetheamiga.org.uk and work from
there. Brad}
 Fleecy Moss
 ...to everyone here.
Just to let you know that Amino is still working away
at trying to provide a real future for the amiganauts,
and that this list is one of our inspirations, showing that
there is still talent, passion, nutjobs, and fun, and that the
flame of the Amiga is still burning despite the best efforts
of some to put it out.
Happy holidays to all, and here's looking forwards
to a better tomorrow.
Cheers
        Softwave Announces a new CD based Amiga Magazine
Dear Amigans,
 My name is Giorgio Signori, and I am the director of Softwave, a new
company born in Italy this summer. I have been writing on the only
Italian Amiga magazine, Enigma Amiga Run, in the past years, and I am
in Amiga environment since years. After years writing for Amiga, I
decided to build up a new company to publish an Amiga-only, CD-based
magazine. After a lot of work, at the Amiga show Softwave was there
with the first issue of Amiga.it, showed during the conference with
Petro Tyschtschenko. After this, we decided to publish Amiga.it, under
the name Amiga.news, also outside Italy. We put much effort in this,
translating, for now, the whole magazine in English. We will show and
sell the first issue of Amiga.news at the next Home Electronics World
of Cologne, on 12-14 November.
 We hope that the public response will be enough to convince us to
keep doing a multi-language magazine also for the next issues. If so,
since the 3rd issue, we will translate it also in German, as many of
you already requested. In the next days in this site will be published
the summary of the first issue.
 But now, some of the highlights of Amiga.news:
 The magazine part count many important writers here in Italy. Editors
like ing. Massimo Gais, system administrator of the Italian Aminet
node and of the Astronomic Observatory of Naples, like ing. Alessio
Cappelli, expert in Amiga and NetBSD environments. People like Massimo
Marino, writer for the biggest selling videogames magazine in Italy,
The Games Machine, and Nick Mordock, experienced Amiga writer since
years. Not to mention Andrea Favini, the 3000+ staff and Laura
Falzone, writers of proved experience.
 The CD part of Amiga.news differs from what we are used to see on the
market. it will not be a simple shareware collection. Of course it
will contain the recent shareware software from month to month, with
index and search function, but it will be thematic. The first issue of
Amiga.it, published only in Italian, had Linux as theme of the month,
with a RedHatPPC distribution and a serie of articles dedicated to
installation of Linux, but not only. Every month a different theme
will fill the CD. I can anticipate that on the issue that will be
presented at Cologne, there will be a much requested Linux68k/RedHat68
distribution, and a special on Star Wars on Amiga.
 I am available for every question, I will be happy to give all the
answers you may need, if you are a user or an Amiga
distributor/reseller. You can find me at the mailbox yurex@tin.it.
22 Dec 1999
 Finally our 26,000 hit is almost upon us! (It would have been 25,000
but the Amiga used to update Amiga Yellow Pages broke - OK?)
 To celebrate this great occasion, Amiga Yellow Pages have teamed up
with Amiga retailer FORE-MATT Home Computing to give away a copy of
WipeOut 2097.
 Don't despair if you already own it or don't have the required specs,
because those nice people at FORE-MATT will let you take your pick
from their £30.00 range which includes hits such as Wasted Dreams,
T-Zero and many more. Or even better! you can opt to choose two games
from their £15 pound range, with a choice of Foundation DC, Moonbases,
Pheonix Fighters and many more.
 Take a peep at the FORE-MATT Home Computing advert, on Amiga Yellow
Pages http://ayp.amiga.tm and take your pick. Alternatively why not
download their December catalogue which contains more goodies than the
 This model is specifically for the Amiga 2000 and 3000.
 Need a new keyboard for your Amiga? Find out its next to impossible
to get them anymore? How about a mouse? Same deal, and you cannot just
plug in one of those common PS/2 devices that you would find at your
common PC shop.. until now..
 The InsertMK/2 adapter will adapt a PS/2 mouse AND a PS/2 keyboard to
your Amiga 1200, 2000, 3000 4000 (* adapters needed for 1200/4000 *)
 Plug a PS/2 mouse and keyboar dinto this small 6x6x3cm box, then plug
the cables from the box into your keyboard adn you are set.
 The Amiga keys are now mapped to the Winodws keys on your standard
104-key Windows keyboard. The extra keys can be specifically
programmed with software at a later date
 The mouse adapter is unique. You can use a standard PS/2 mouse
(Logitech, Genius, Microsoft, etc..) and even one with a scroller
wheel. The whell is mapped to the up/down cursor keys. Its quite cool
to scroll through a webpage in your browser this way. :)
 They are also flash upgradable. Meaning any changes and upgrades
needed in the future can be performed with a simple flash upgrade
(just like a flash BIOS on a PC)
 This product is now in testing and is scheduled for release in late
December 1999. In the mean time, we need to know how many parts to
order to start assembly with!
 Dealer and distributor enquiries for quantity pricing is welcomed.
 AEMail Version 2.20 is now available. It can be obtained from AmiNet
or my web page:
 http://www.calweb.com/~jzachar/
 My web page is probably the best source for the AEMail archive since
it is "up to the minute". With AmiNet, it can take some time for the
archive to be replicated to the various mirror sites.
 AEMail Version 1.51 is a minor upgrade that corrects some last minute
bugs found after Version 1.50 was released. It also adds an additional
ARexx script "Addtogrp.aem" to the ARexx directory.
 AEMail Version 2.20 is a major revision of AEMail. This version has
restructured the Menus in AEMail providing a separate menu for
ARexx/DOS commands. It also allows you to call ARexx or DOS commands
from a menu list in addition to the function keys. The ARexx/DOS menu
has also been added to the "Edit and save message line to clipboard;
set ARexx variable" requester.
 AEMail Version 2.20 now also allows you to re-arrange your folder
lists and has added the "Move..." menu item to the Folders menu.
Additional edits have also been added when creating new folders to
prevent assigning illegal names to the folders. Any folder containing
the special characters :, \, or / are illegal as well as the name
"folder".
 The folder strip when, it extends beyond the visable window, is now
correctly displayed on systems using display boards and CyberGraphX
software. Previous versions displayed garbage in that part of the
folder strip when it was moved into the visable portion of the window.
Also, instead of specifying a display mode in the Configuration
Edit/General Page, you can select a clone of the workbench display
mode. Whatever you have selected as the display mode for the workbench
(from the Preferences/Display Mode setting) will be used for the
display mode for AEMail.
 Mime attachments that use the "multipart/alternative" mime
type/subtype are now correctly handled. This mime type/subtype is
widely used in the Macintosh and PC world. Also, headers using
Quoted-Printable notation are correctly handled.
 AEMail Version 2.20 also corrects some bugs found in Version 2.01.
 A complete list of new features, changes and the bugs corrected with
version 2.20 is given at the end of the AEMail.readme file. The readme
file is given in the AEMail archive and can also be found on my web
site which can be displayed with a browser.
 With the release of Version 2.00 at the Amiga '99 show in March of
this year, AEMail now utilizes ClassAct which has become part of the
new Amiga OS 3.5. The ClassAct Classes required are included with the
archive for OS Versions before 3.5. Amiga OS 3.5 includes the required
classes as part of the OS.
 For those of you with a version of AEMail prior to 2.00, AEMail no
longer automatically sends the special "Notification" message when you
send your first message. Instead, when you first load the new version
of AEMail a special requester will appear asking if you want to send
the notification message for updates and giving you the ability to
select what information you want to send. You can cancel this message,
but if you do, the requester will appear each time you load AEMail. Tf
you are a registered user and you cancel, you will be given the
opportunity to suppress the message the next time you load AEMail. For
unregistered users the requester will appear each time you load AEMail
whether or not you send the notification or cancel.
 The installation script also had been completely re-written starting
with AEMail 2.00 to allow you to create multiple icons for multiple
users of AEMail. Please read the INSTALL.TXT document before
attempting to install this version of AEMail.
Thanks,
John
Programmierer für Realsoft 4 D (Amiga) gesucht!
Realsoft kündigt auf Ihrer Hompage den Nachfolger von Real 3D an. Die neue Version nennt sich Realsoft 4D und ist zur Zeit leider nur für Windows geplant, da Realsoft leider bisher keinen Programmierer gefunden hat, der solch ein anspruchvolles Programm auf dem Amiga umsetzen will. Sollte sich auf diesen Weg jemand finden, der wende sich an barkholt@post3.tele.dk. (ps)
Ab sofort wird clickBOOM unter "S-Files" jeden Monat mitteilen, was es Neues bei clickBOOM gibt. Im aktuellen S-File werden zunächst Weihnachtsgrüße und Neujahrswünsche übermittelt. Dann wird ein neues Spiel für Mädchen avvisiert: "Sarah goes shopping", was aber dann nur ein kleiner Scherz von Sofia (der Autorin des Newsletters) ist.
