Webbrowser: IBrowse 2.4 available
Today version 2.4 of the MUI-based Webbrowser IBrowse has been published. The browser can be bought from IOSpirit. Registered users of the previous version 2.x will get the update for free.

Additional to several buf fixes version 2.4 has got some news just like the plugin interface and context sensitive mouse pointer. This is the official press release:

"Lund, Sweden, 22nd December 2006 - Stefan Burstrom and the IBrowse Team are pleased to announce the immediate release of the much anticipated update to IBrowse 2.3.

IBrowse 2.4 brings web browsing on AmigaOS to a new level - below is a very brief summary of the changes since version 2.3:
  • New integrated Search Bar, allowing you to easily perform searches of your favourite sites. Search engines can be added manually or automatically via the Mycroft project site
  • The Status Bar has been overhauled to optionally provide the status of IBrowse graphically. Due to requiring less space than text, this has allowed us to show additional statuses such as when Javascript is being processed
  • Plugin API system for embedded objects based on the v4 NPAPI (Netscape Plugin API) to allow for easier porting of NS compatible plugins, this is used to allow IBrowse to display embedded objects (such as flash animations) within the browser when a suitable plugin is available
  • Support for AmiSSLv3 has been added to IBrowse 2.4, allowing the use of the most up to date SSL implementation available for AmigaOS
  • Context sensitive mouse pointers have been added, providing different mouse pointers in different areas of IBrowse
  • Background tab loading has finally been added to the Browser Tabs. Links can be opened in new browsers which remain inactive, allowing you to continue browsing the original page uninterrupted
  • The spoofing engine has been totally re-written for 2.4, and provides a range of pre-defined spoofing options
  • The JavaScript engine has been improved yet further providing support for more event handlers, and improved DOM support, along with some significant speed increases in certain areas. It now supports the complete JavaScript 1.6 extension, as found in Firefox 2.0, along with the majority of JavaScript 1.5 and the revision 3 of the ECMAScript (ECMA-262) specification
  • HTTP compressed content support has been added, which includes both gzip and deflate algorithms
  • On websites which ask for a username and password in a HTML based form, IBrowse can now (optionally) save these details for future visits
  • Web Advert Control Language (WACL) is a feature of IBrowse based on a proposal by Stefan Stuntz for a user configurable, flexible scripting language to control the display of adverts on webpages
  • Improved general stability and memory leaks plugged
  • Hundreds of other minor and major bug fixes + improvements, and increased tolerance of broken sites for better compatibility
All these improvements greatly improve the browsing experience, and allow IBrowse to offer compatibility with many more websites than before.

IBrowse 2.4 is available from IOSPIRIT - to purchase, please visit http://amiga.iospirit.de (registered users of IBrowse 2.x can upgrade for free, and there is a special upgrade price available to registered IBrowse 1.x users)." (snx) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS-Team: Update of the JIT-compiler Trance
A new version of the Just-In-Time Compiler Trance has been released for MorphOS 1.4.5. The changes since the previous release are:
  • Fixed a bug that would make certain IBrowse CPU versions crash (at least IBrowse 2.3 and 2.4)
  • Some SAS/C float/double integer calculation fixes (lsd/asd X flag). For example, the integer version of IBrowse's javascript.library
  • Addx/Subx with predecrement was fixed. These instructions are very rare, but could be used for some multiprecision math
  • Trancestats has been updated to work properly with the latest MUI versions
In order to install Trance v50.12 (09.12.2006) on your MorphOS system, please download the update from the MorphOS download portal or FTP server. Then, follow these steps:
  • Copy MorphOS/C/trance to MOSSYS:C/
  • Copy MorphOS/Libs/trance.library to MOSSYS:Libs/
  • Copy Utilities/Trancestats SYS:Utilities/
  • Reboot
The MorphOS Team wishes everyone Happy Holidays and a Great New Year! (snx)

Windows/C64: Christmas updates for Catweasel and MMC64 / tUM sponsoring
Press release Just in time for Christmas, we have an update for our Catweasel-customers that fixes two small bugs and adds a lot of new disk formats. The list of formats would go beyond the scope of this news-item, therefore we have chosen a few special formats:

VERSAdos: Dr. Kümmerle of the department for safety and radiation protection of the Research Centre Jülich has sent sample disks of a Motorola VERSAdos computer, because the Research Centre had to comply with laws about archiving measurement data. More than 2000 disks have been archived and copied to up-to-date media using the Catweasel.

MHS Bootdisk: Douglas Tennant has sent a disk to us that is used to start an MHS machine. Since these disks cannot be copied using the original legacy equipment, the Catweasel now ensures that the machines can be operated in the future, using backup copies of the bootdisks.

Casio sampler disk: Casio has used disk drives in their samplers that spin at unusually high speeds. The Catweasel floppy controller has a variable bitrate, so it can read and write these disks in off-the-shelve drives. This is a good example that the topic of data recovery is not limited to computer technology. More floppy disk formats of music instruments will be implemented in future updates of the Catweasel driver software, such as the legendary synthesizer Emulator II.

If you have disks that are not yet supported by the Catweasel, please don't hesitate to contact us!

The new driver version has been reported to be stable since the last update, therefore it has left beta state. It can be downloaded for free from our support site.

Direct download: CWMK42200.zip

Planned formats for the next version of the driver are: Apple IIe, Macintosh 800K and 400K disks, and DEC RX01 and RX02 disks that have been requested by Mr. Axel Thiel of the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation.

MMC64 updates

The new BIOS-version v1.04 and the recovery disk are available for free download from our support site. The MP3-plugin that enebales the MP3@64 module on the MMC64 has been improved: Playback on NTSC machines now works errorfree.

Aminet: Status-Update December 2006
Press release: The calm season has come again. But while other people are preparing Christmas we still have improved Aminet further:

The search function now allows to search through archives: If you are looking for some certain library or header-file you can go to Advanced Search -> Contents.

Additional to the download statistics now the figures of the downloads are shown - you can now sort your search results by popularity!

Searching through the readme-files was accelerated and besides this the standard search function was extended so you can now specify path names: Just like the old Aminet search function "quake game/shoot" now shows only results from this directory.

The Web-based Upload-Interface was completely revised. Uploader can choose if you want to upload a written readme or if you would rather enter the information in a formular.

With us2.aminet.net an American mirror is available again. You can access us2.aminet.net only via HTTP.

Additionally there are many improvements and minor bug fixes. Please have a look at Changelog for further details.

A last note: In 2006 we had more uploads than in 2005, 2004 and 2003 - even in 1992 as the Aminet started we had not so many uploads. Currently we need only 130 uploads to reach 2002.

Greetings,
The Aminet-Team (cg) (Translation: dr)
