Amiga Blitz Basic Game Jam: Introduction of the game "Settle the World"
At the beginning of June, indie game developer Dan 'zooperdan' Thoresen had started the Amiga Blitz Basic Game Jam, which is running - deadline was extended - until November 1, 2022 (amiga-news.de reported).

In our first article we had introduced the two projects of 'pixelplop'. Today we are talking about "Settle the World" (YouTube video), developed by 'TheoTheoderich'. About his game he tells us the following:

Basically, the game is a turn-based building and trading game in which the goal is to colonize several islands and stay in power for a long period of time. The game is similar to the old DOS/Amiga game Colonization, but has a slightly different approach.

"Settle the World" is a pure multiplayer game without AI, which you play together with up to three other players, one after the other, on one (Amiga) computer. A single player mode is also planned, but it will be even more difficult because then there are no trading partners.

What is "Settle the World" about? The game begins roughly in time with the conquest of the new world. Background of the story:

Two (or up to four) experienced captains feel oppressed in their home country and want more freedom. Without further ado, they organize several ships and gather like-minded people around them to seek their happiness and freedom across the ocean.
he king, however, suspects that his best captains want to defect to his hostile neighboring countries and sends soldiers to arrest the captains and hang them as traitors. Thus, secretly and by night and fog, the group immediately decides to leave the kingdom, knowing full well that they can never return.

After weeks of hardship at sea, the ships reach uninhabited land. Immediately, a dispute breaks out about how to proceed. The group is unable to agree on a leader. Each of the captains involved asserts his claim to leadership. There are heated arguments, and to prevent bloodshed, the captains each decide to find a good place to settle with their ships on their own.

At this point, the gameplay begins:
In order to play at all, the game needs a map. This is calculated using Perlin noise and then provided with (more or less) randomly generated features (bonus fields, such as sheep, gold, wood, etc. and also shipwrecks or abandoned settlements where you can find something). The map is of course not yet revealed to the players!

The map generation takes between 20 and 30 minutes on an unaccelerated Amiga 500. Therefore there will be some included "presets" with appealing maps.

Players can build settlements and field improvements with pioneer units. Settlements serve the production of raw materials and their processing into finished goods. In contrast to "Colonization", the workers of a city are not its inhabitants at the same time. Inhabitants belong to a city. If the food supply is good, the number of inhabitants increases. Increasing population generates additional workers, who can be used on the fields or factory buildings of any own city.
If a city has certain important buildings and "luxury goods", the population can advance in three levels (settler/pioneer class --> worker class --> noble). With each class and a certain number of citizens, higher quality buildings or improved production facilities can be unlocked.

The goal of the whole game is to remain the head of the government for as long as possible. As soon as the first inhabitants of a city have reached the level of the worker class, the citizens demand the establishment of a republic. If you don't set up an electable government, the inhabitants become more dissatisfied with each round until they eventually send the player packing.

The satisfaction of the citizens depends on the ("luxury") buildings available in the cities, such as tavern, theater, marketplace, etc.. And above all according to the availability of ("luxury") goods. Here the settlers/pioneers have the least demand and aristocrats the highest. These satisfaction values are the basic values. In addition, there is how much the citizens trust the president (the players). Trust builds up very slowly, but can be destroyed quickly.

Free elections are held every four years. In each election, there is a competitor who runs against the president. The latter also gains the trust of the citizens with each round. If, for example, the delivery of goods to the city with the most aristocrats falters shortly before an election that was thought to be safe, this has a strong effect on their satisfaction and can be decisive for the election of the competitor. In such a case, it is possible to eliminate the competitor before the election. A new candidate then takes his place, but of course he does not yet enjoy the trust of the population.

Thus, it is still possible to turn the tide shortly before an election. However, eliminating an opposing candidate also has a strong effect on the population's trust in its own president.

Scouts can explore the surrounding area. Abandoned settlements and shipwrecks can be found all over the world. Bandits can be a problem: if they are not defeated, they can roam the land and become a danger to the transport of goods. This whole system is currently still under development. Sound effects or music are missing at the moment, but are planned.

The game is developed under WinUAE with AmiBlitz 3.8 and temporarily on a real Amiga 500+ with FireBird accelerator card. The developer has been working his way into AmiBlitz for about two years. The goal is that "Settle the World" works well on an A1200 with hard disk and 2 MB RAM. As he writes, currently many things are still programmed very simply in the game and therefore very slow. The graphics are all created with PPaint on the Amiga or in WinUAE itself. (dr)

ACube Systems: Production of Sam460LE boards finished by the end of September
In March, ACube Systems has anounced the begin of the production of the Sam460LE boards in a press release (amiga-news.de reported).

Today the company has announced, that by the end of the September the boards are supposed to be finished. Please read the original press release:

"Dear customers,

We would like to share with you an update about the production of the new Sam460LE. Well, to be short...the boards are expected to be ready by the end of September - yes, THIS September, just in time for AMIGA37 event (HINT: ACube will be present in Mönchengladbach, Germany...so connect the dots...).

We had to overcome many issues that slowed down the production, but now - finger crossed - we managed to fix them all.

Everything is progressing well and the factory will ship the boards at the end of September. We plan to start shipping to our customers shortly after.

Thanks again everyone for your patience and interest.

See you at Amiga37 in Germany!" (dr)

AmigaOS 4.1: Enhancer Software 2.2
Six years after the release of the first version of the "Enhancer Software" (amiga-news.de reported) version 2.2 for AmigaOS 4.1 by A-EON Technology has been released today. Existing customers of version 2.x can get it for free via the updater tool. For first-time customers, the digital version is available from AmiStore for about 90 Euro and on CD from AmigaKit, among others, for also 90 Euros plus shipping.

The "Enhancer Software" adds and partially replaces system components in AmigaOS 4.1 to provide more functionality: from basic 2D graphics drivers to a modern 3D graphics subsystem, more advanced utilities, tools, classes and gadgets.

In parallel with the current version 2.2, work has also already begun on the next version, V54, which will represent an even greater leap forward in development. Several components developed for it are already included in the present version 2.2. First and foremost is "Warp3D Nova V54". This upgrade reflects more than a year's worth of development work and provides important new features, speed improvements and bug fixes. It is an essential prerequisite for many new 3D game ports with full shader support, such as Doom3 (amiga-news.de reported). Also support for the soon to be released NovaBridge software has been added, which can be used to run old Warp3D games (amiga-news.de reported). This release will be chargeable. br>
The OpenGL ES library has been updated to version 3.3 and contains many rewritten and optimized parts which are also required for new 3D applications like SCUMMVM, SDL2 and GL4ES.

The RadeonRX 2D graphics driver has been updated to include GART- support, which provides additional 3D performance as well as many additional optimizations.

In addition, numerous programs, datatypes, classes, preferences, commodities and commands have been updated. In the past time the sense or nonsense of new versions for commands or classes was discussed and partly ignored by the users. As Matthew Leaman from A-EON explains to us, there is a basic distinction to be made:
"The classes are mandatory to install and are crucial for running the applications like X-Dock, MultiEdit, Multiviewer, Power Prefs, etc. They are extended versions of the AmigaOS 4.1 classes. For example, the Tabbed Gadget class supports draggable tabs, while Hyperion's Clicktab does not. The Toolbar Gadget class has many advanced features that the old Speedbar Gadget does not." Since there is no reliance on Hyperion's classes being updated and released regularly, "we developed our own gadget classes. We want to be able to develop our applications independently with the building blocks (classes) that give users the most functionality."

The commands included in AmigaOS 4 are from Commodore source code that is part of the third-party legal dispute. The next version of Enhancer Software V54 will be a self-booting distribution. It will require a set of native commands to achieve self-boot. As Matthew continues, "we have spent the last 3 years developing these commands from scratch. When we intiially released them, some bugs were found and we have since rapidly resolved every bug report that users have given us. We have got to a point now where these commands are mature and work well - with the added bonus of not being tainted by legal issues."
An added advantage, he continued saying, is "that the same command code base is now running for Classic Amiga's. The commands work very well with even Kickstart 3.0. They also offer many advanced features over the standard commands. So we have achieved development Commands set for both PPC and Classic which share the same code base and provide up to date features."

Emulator: vAmigaWeb v2.1 beta5
vAmigaWeb is an Amiga emulator for the web browser or a Progressive Web App (PWA) based on the Amiga emulator for MacOS vAmiga.

In the current version the developer 'mithrendal' has integrated the latest vAmigaCore2.1b5. Likewise, it is now possible to load the old Snapshots game saves with a new vAmigaCore version. This has been solved by the fact that vAmigaWeb can now hold several versions of the vAmigaCore in parallel. Via the settings you can now reactivate vAmigaCore versions already installed in the past and continue playing the saved games. Detailed changes:
  • supports parallel installation of different versions of vAmigaCore; from now on old snapshots can be run by switching back to an older installed version of vAmigaCore
  • updated to latest vAmigaCore version v2.1.beta5
  • supports ECS denise (SuperHires modes)
  • improved memory managment ... support for hdfs with a size of 256Mb (e.g. classic_wb project)
  • introduced df0/dh0 eject buttons
  • fixed a severe bug where vAmigaWeb stopped accepting any adf or hdf file

  • fixed some issues with select tool - will not allow you to select out of work area bounds now!
  • fixed QuickPascal bug not outputting correct palette array constant
  • Added Overwrite file prompt - it would overwrite files without telling you they exist
  • Added prompt when selecting exit/close button - just in case you clicked on by accident
  • RES Text Include drop down list allows you to select various extensions (c,bas,h,pas, inc,bi)
  • grenade constants for Amiga formats c/basic/pascal
R60
  • R60 brings QB64/Freebasic RGB/RGBA formats - with auto loading into _NewImage/CreateImage variables
  • some bug fixes - I think i was generating basic labels for all the languages instead of just basic in RES Text Export - fixed!
  • Created QB64 as separate option now. Use this to use the RGB/RGBA formats, use QBasic\QuickBasic to use PUT for legacy screen modes (CGA/EGA/VGA)
  • Freebasic also has 2 options now. Freebasic QB mode - use this when in QB compatibility mode. Use Freebasic for RGB\RGBA modes
  • -Map Editor export options has QB64 and Freebasic as options now. This was done because Freebasic needs variables defined prior to use and no period "." in variable names when not in QB mode. So both modes of Freebasic use under scores to sperate fields. eg. Imagename_Width = 16
R59
  • Fixed Clip Scroll Issue when top left of work area is clipped and scrolled right
  • QB64/Freebasic export of RGBA now properly displays ImageName.Size variable, also added labels for images
  • QB64 users see example on how to load RGBA/RGB for _putimage using the the RayLib RGBA/RGB export options (you do not need RayLib for this)
  • Sprite import now allows JPG/BMP and ICO files. These are already part of Lazarus runtime anyway (zero cost feature)

Amiga Blitz Basic Game Jam: Introduction of two entries
At the beginning of June, indie game developer Dan 'zooperdan' Thoresen had started the Amiga Blitz Basic Game Jam, which will run until September 1, 2022 (amiga-news.de reported).

We would like to introduce two contributions of 'pixelplop': "Deathmine" and "Capacitor's Revenge". Both were written with Blitz Basic 2.10 installed under WinUAE. The developer had learned Blitz Basic on the Amiga in the early 90's and after a 25 year break now found his way back to it.

"Deathmine" (YouTube video) is basically a platform game, with an original idea: the player must escape from the mine as quickly as possible before his oil lamp runs out. Each time you die, you leave a light source in the place where you died, and you return to the last checkpoint. You have an infinite number of lives, but each death costs the player time. As the player, you can only see as far as the lamp in your hand or the stationary ones attached to the walls illuminate the environment. The development is in a relatively early stage.

More complete is "Capacitor's Revenge" (YouTube video). It's a remake of Transistor's Revenge, a shoot'em-up game that came out in 1983 for the BBC Micro Computer. A conversion of this game had been planned by him for a long time: here the player takes on the role of a microchip, in his conversion that of the 68000 processor of an Amiga 500+, which is attacked by electrical components such as resistors and capacitors. One defends oneself by sending electrical impulses along the conductive paths on which the enemies approach. When an enemy reaches the chip, it is destroyed and a life is lost. (dr)

Farming simulation: Fourth beta version of Farmiga released (update)
The Polish developer 'Tukinem' is writing a farming simulation in AMOS, called 'Farmiga' (amiga-news.de reported). A few moments ago, the fourth beta version (06.08.2022) was released. Changes:
  • A farmer has been added to the game who needs to be provided with food and drink. His age and state of contentment are shown in the picture.
  • The aim of the game is for the farmer to survive four ages (young, middle-aged, old and grandfather). Then he retires. If the farmer's health declines, his sad face is shown on the photo, and if his health declines completely, the game is lost.
  • Additional cultivation of coffee and tea, which can be sold or drunk by the farmer. Coffee or tea with sugar quenches much of the peasants' thirst.
  • New mill and cooking sounds.
  • Full game time of 8 tax periods.
Hardware requirements: 1,5MB ChipRAM bzw. 1MB Chip + 0,5MB FastRAM.

Update: (12:04, 08.08.22, dr)

The developer uploaded a new adf file today, which now actually contains the sounds of the mill and the cooker. (dr)

Chris Young has released version 1.7 of his ReAction-based graphical user interface Avalanche for the unarchiving system XAD, which also supports the xfdmaster.library and can search for viruses using the xvs.library. • Avalanche now registers as a commodity
  • Added Tools menu item "Extract here" for quick extraction
  • Fix initial state of "confirm quit" and "ignore fs" menu items

How I rediscovered my floppy disks
What is, among many other nice things, the advantage of having a baby? You get to know your surroundings completely new! In our bookshelf in the living room, IKEA of course ;), there are two separate compartments on the bottom floor: one is filled with magazines, hiking maps and travel books, the other with my two Amiga floppy disk boxes and quite a few boxes.
Currently, my offspring has developed two preferences: to completely clear out both shelves :) He has a favorite with the hiking maps, which are unfolded with pleasure and meanwhile don't consist of only one piece, as well as with the floppy disk boxes. There are two of them: the Verbatim "Deluxe" version, which offers a small plastic cover for each disk (like boeder) and the Profex. Here is my complete collection:

Now I don't know if it's sacrilege to keep floppy disks not in professional plastic boxes and slipcases, but just in the original cardboard boxes, but it was the start for me to dig back into old memories.

Relatively vividly and well I can remember the various rummage boxes and walls in the local electronics store, in which the disks of various suppliers were presented. And every time the question: do I take the cheap no-name parts or do I treat myself to a box of the brand suppliers - as you can see from the colorful mixture, I then gladly reached for boeder & Co and treated myself to variety. Even in the 90s one was already on sustainability, see KAO. And the no-name boxes were semi-professionally glued together and thus used as a kind of big box.

Even if one or the other may not believe it, but a considerable part of the floppy disks was equipped with software from the Aminet. Of course, I ran a modem on my Amiga 1200! First a 28.8k modem, which drove me crazy, because I never managed to get a noise-free dial-up, and later finally a 56k modem. At that time, in the middle of the 90s, I was studying and where could I get fast and free - yes, at that time dial-up at home still cost something ;) - download software from the Aminet? Of course, in the computer cabinet there. It felt like there was a new version of Voyager and Co every week and you could hardly keep up...

Are floppy disks now just an outdated greeting from times long past? I have to admit, it's been a while since I put the last floppy disk into the 1200 (but that also has to do with the current "computer offspring"). On the one hand, of course, they consume a lot of space. For the little bit that's on there...On the other hand, it's very pleasant to have an antithesis to this "WLAN/streaming/'file-shuffling' world. And even if it might seem contradictory regarding the 'wild copy times' on the Amiga: doesn't such a disk better symbolize the efforts and value behind the development of the software? In any case my curiosity is aroused and I will rummage around in the boxes... (dr)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.2
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Today version 1.2 of the Greaseweazle Tools was released providing the following changes:
  • gw read, gw convert: Allow PLL parameters to be specified
  • Try fallback conservative PLL on difficult tracks
  • Kryoflux: Emit info block with Greaseweazle and frequency details

Sprite/Icon/Map editor: Raster Master V1.2 R58 for Windows 10/11
Raster Master is a sprite/icon/map editor for Windows 10/11 which generates RayLib-, PutImagedata and Map code for gcc, AmigaBASIC, Amiga C, Amiga Pascal, QuickBasic, QB64, Quick C, Turbo Pascal, freepascal, Turbo C, Turbo Basic, Power Basic, FreeBASIC, GWBASIC, BASICA, and PC-BASIC (YouTube video).

Since our last message, the generation of BASIC code has been further improved. A corresponding example code has been published as RPG demo and explained in a new YouTube video. Detailed changes
  • Fixed paint bug - caused the program to freeze if clicking outside of image/grid area
  • grenade constants for Amiga formats c/basic/pascal
  • generates map code loader for basic (dims and loads map code into array)
  • generate constants for modex dos lib lbm/pbm formats (c/pascal)
  • when exporting RES Text Include files RM will add variables and assign width/height (image1.width = 16)
  • Also with PUT image format RM will now build stub that creates an array and reads the image data. so now you can do put(0,0),Image1 and it will display your images without having to write the code.
  • QB64 and Freebasic Raylib support. You can also use the RGB/RGBA data with _PutImage (not regular PUT) if you are using QB64.

AmiTube 1.3: YouTube client for all Amiga systems
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's AmiTube enables watching YouTube videos on an 68k Amiga. They are converted to Commodore's CDXL format and downloaded.

As the developer wrote on his website, " I tried to implement that AmiTube remembers the splitter position. Sadly I made a big error there resulting in a very small barely recognizable List on the left side of the window. I only tested it on m68k-Amiga where it did not happen, but after a bit of trying I found the culprit and fixed it."

The current version can be downloaded from the AmiTube website or installed via the update check in AmiTube. (dr)

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.12
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.9, which allows the development of games from various genres (see short tests of two Redpill games). RedPill is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM. Jens 'Farbfinsternis' Henschel has written a tutorial which he recently updated.

Version 0.9.12 includes, among other things, a new project, a 2018 game called 'Bad Ninjas VS Rick & Joe' (YouTube video) and now uses the AmiBlitz 3.9.4 compiler. Changes:
  • Bad Ninjas game is now included in the projects folder by courtesy of Ricky Place.
  • Hud refresh speed can be set in the HUD screen.
  • Added action trigger Reset Vars that allows to reset a range of variables to its initial value.
  • In HUD screen the background image can now be edited or deleted.
  • When editing a trigger if it instantiates something it will show the instantiated object in position in the preview screen.
  • Switched to Amiblitz 3.9.4 compiler.
  • Less strict asset processing when Building a game.
  • Improved compatibility with old game projects.
  • Improved calculation when setting Line Width now allows bigger maps.
  • Fix for objects of type Shot not being automatically destroyed.
  • Fix for compressed 16 sprite backgrounds not showing properly.
  • Fix in vertical scroll leaving one empty line under certain conditions.
  • Fix for some glitch in object rendering for multiscreen games.
  • Fix for camera centering when using smaller displays.
  • Fix for spritesheet screen always asking about palette reload even if it was the same.
  • Small optimizations.

AmigaOS 4: Arcade game KOG updated
As already reported in the article on Blastaway, Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua has updated several games in parallel and thus his arcade game KOG as well (video). Changes:

July 29, 2022
  • Added screenshots of internal graphics (now [F1] grab a screenshot of the internal graphics and [F2] of the visible graphics).
  • Added [ALT]+[F4] quit option.
  • Simplified data files access code.
  • Set savedata directory to the game's own data directory also for the Windows installed version (which now is thus identical to the portable version).
  • Moved configuration file to the program directory.
  • Added to installers code to import previous savedata and clean up leftovers.
  • Improved/extended manual.
July 24, 2022
  • Reworked assignments of the kind *p++ = ... *p ... (as they are miscompiled by some versions of gcc).
  • Removed assignment of function "back" to joypad first button (as that was confusing).
  • Added Windows portable version.
  • Worked on Windows installer: removed unused data directory; added logo to graphics.

AmigaOS 4: Update of arena shooter 'Blastaway'
Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua's 'Blastaway' (video) is an arena shooter with 50 levels in five different worlds. The game principle is inspired by Wizard of Wor, the graphics by The Chaos Engine (amiga-news.de reported).

As Simone wrote, "lately work has been done in parallel on all the RETREAM games. It began with the objective of aligning the technically similar ones for PC so that they would handle data saving the same way, but it soon went out of control and brought uniformity and improvements to the installers, the documentation, the web pages and even to code and internal files -and, just as importantly, it brought new features as well!" Changes:

29. July 2022
  • Worked on MILESTONE bonus: made notification more prominent by displaying the number of soldiers and/or the points awarded, both in-game and in the arena report screen; fixed handling of multiple milestones reached at the same time (the points awarded were considered by the very same check that decides whether to award those kind of points, thus potentially awarding too many points).
  • Moved the ALIVE SOLDIERS bonus notification from the last arena end screen to the game end screen.
  • Changed the design of the DOUBLE and TRIPLE bonuses marks from "x2" and "x3" to "2x" and "3x".
  • Added glowing to Czywor's eyes.
  • Simplified data files access code.
  • Set savedata directory to the game's own data directory also for the Windows installed version (which now is thus identical to the portable version).
  • Moved configuration file to the program directory.
  • Renamed savedata file (safe.raw -> safe.dat).
  • Added to installers code to import previous savedata and clean up leftovers.
  • Improved/extended manual.
24. July 2022
  • Reworked assignments of the kind *p++ = ... *p ... (as they are miscompiled by some versions of gcc).
  • Embedded AmigaOS version string in executable.
18. July 2022
  • Added support for thumbsticks, as at times Windows treats D-pads as thumbsticks (this is just to support as many joypads as possible: using real thumbsticks is not a good idea anyway).
  • Added journey map (at the beginning of each stage, a screen shows the previous stages, the current stage and, darkened, the next stages).
  • Added FULL GAME bonus (completing the game starting it from the first arena of the first stage awards 50000 extra points).
  • Added final score in game completion screen.
  • Touched up instruments volumes and effects in tunes.
  • Removed the "commercials" showing the other RETREAM games between stages.
  • Removed donation message from title screen.
  • Fixed handling of joypad presses and releases (under some circumstances outside of the game, a release could be handled as a consequence of a previous, unrelated press).
  • Improved/extended manual.

Introduced: The Workbench homepage
What happens when you are born in 1989 and your uncle gave you an Amiga 500 as your first computer? Logically: you can't get rid of that inside and so you try to express your attachment to your beloved Amiga. Thorn has done that in this case by creating his private Workbench homepage.

The basic idea for this kind of homepage design came to him when he thought about what he as a developer would like to present on his website and how. To simply introduce himself textually, as usual, or to build something from which one can immediately see where the private interest (among others) lies. He decided to go for the second option: a website as an interface with minimal content, but small gimmicks.

Why he named this site 'Lammpee', he doesn't know anymore himself. The project itself is open source, the source code is available on GitHub, and is built on the Nuxt framework.

The links to Nuxt modules contained on the homepage in the folder 'Nuxt Stuff' are mostly privately created and further developed projects, which are also open source. Short info about the modules:
  • nuxt-custom-elements is used if you want to offer components of your homepage as widgets
  • nuxt-speedkit is a comparison module to determine the loading speed of a website
  • gp-vue-boilerplate is a construction kit to create a homepage
The entire web workbench is basically a Vue component made up of many small ones. Nuxt helps here, because it can be used to generate HTML, which is used when there is no Javascript.

But the homepage has even more to offer: for example a Basic web editor that can parse Basic code in real time. It is strongly oriented to the examples on the Extras disk. Other things the reader may explore on his own.

By the way, Thorn's favorite game is Moon City, for which you can also find a branch in the project. As he says, he first has to "put it together" again. (dr)

George Sokianos (ko-fi)

AmigaOS 4: Flawfinder finds vulnerabilities in C/C++ source code
George 'walkero' Sokianos has ported Flawfinder, originally written by David A. Wheeler in Python, to AmigaOS 4 and explained:

"In the last couple of years that I started working on AmigaOS applications, I always look how to make use of modern tools with my code and how to avoid doing mistakes that will cost performance and, most importantly, security. That's why my projects are covered by an online test platform like Codacy.

What I found is that such platforms use tools that are available, such as CppCheck and Flawfinder. Then I thought, 'Is it possible to bring those tools to AmigaOS 4? Would it be useful?'. So...

Flawfinder is a code analysis tool that searches in source files, looking for potential security flaws. This is developed by David A. Wheeler in Python, supporting v2.7 and above. So it looked like a good candidate to work with.

The problem with AmigaOS 4 is that the available Python version is 2.5. The good thing is that Flawfinder does not use code that is really tough to backport. After a few changes on print() usage here and there and some other fixes, Flawfinder works fine and it is available for everyone to use it.

You can find my work and my latest release 2.0.19 r1 on my personal Git website and soon on OS4Depot.

The only thing you need to do to use it is to extract the lha file contents anywhere on your hard disk and execute something like:

flawfinder src/

Inside the archive, you will find the documentation in HTML and PDF format, and please consult it for a lot more options."

Anyone who wants to support the author has the opportunity to do so on his Ko-fi website. The author returns 50% of the donations to the community at the end of each month by supporting projects or developers. (dr)

Trevor's Amiga Blog: Start of production for 'A1222 Plus' board not set
10 months after his last entry Trevor Dickinson from A-EON Technology has published another article in his Trevor's Amiga Blog. We summarize what we think are the most important points for our readers:

Amiga37
  • Is again sponsoring the show on behalf of A-EON Technology and, unless prevented by international travel restrictions, will attend as part of a special combined AAA Technology/Amiga Kit/A-EON Technology exhibit booth
  • will be joined by Matthew Leaman and Ross from the UK, Laurent Zorawski and Franck Bednarski from France, and A-EON's Linux expert Christian Zigotzy from Germany
A1222 Plus
  • after a joint Skype meeting with Matthew Leaman and the ACube team, it was agreed that ACube would obtain final quotes for the early adopter series and oversee production and testing of the A1222Plus motherboards
  • it was agreed with ACube to double the initial production volume to achieve a lower price per unit
  • the factory that produced the prototype A1222Plus boards is committed until next year and another eligible company would have charged double the price. Two other manufacturers have been approached, but switching would increase lead times
ExecSG team
  • according to Steven Solie, head of the ExecSG team, the main focus has been to implement multicore support for AmigaOS 4 on the X5000. After testing on the X5000, it is planned to move on to the A1222 and X1000 platforms
  • in the meantime the A1222 and X5000 DMA engines have been completed. DMA tests have been performed with the generic CopyMem(), with mixed results. It is certain that any application that moves large amounts of data will benefit from using the DMA engines in the P50x0 and P1022 CPUs
  • it is planned to demonstrate multicore on the X5000 at Amiwest 2022

Sprite/Icon/Map editor: Raster Master V1.2 R55 for Windows 10/11
Raster Master is a sprite/icon/map editor for Windows 10/11 which generates RayLib-, PutImagedata and Map code for gcc, AmigaBASIC, Amiga C, Amiga Pascal, QuickBasic, QB64, Quick C, Turbo Pascal, freepascal, Turbo C, Turbo Basic, Power Basic, FreeBASIC, GWBASIC, BASICA, and PC-BASIC (YouTube video).

30 years ago 'RetroNick' wrote a small program in Turbo Pascal (DOS) that allowed him to create simple sprites/icons and generate code. He always wanted to port this program to Windows and provide some updates. He has already implemented most of his project under development, and since his interest in Amiga programming has also expanded, it now supports Pascal and C (Hisoft and Freepascal 68k as well as vbcc) instead of just AmigaBASIC. Some features are still missing:
  • Fastgraph Support
  • TEGL SupportMouse
  • Shape export options
Version 1.2 R55 was released yesterday providing the following changes:
  • arrayname_id define(c) and pascal (constant) added
  • arrayname_ defines/constants added for putimage (c/pascal)
  • various refactoring to remove excess or duplicate code (wcon.pas,rwxgf.pas) will be removed in future releases
  • Code in rwxgf2.pas contains all the functionality

AROS: New build of Workbench replacement Scalos
In mid-2011, Matthias 'Mazze' Rustler began porting the workbench replacement Scalos for AROS and completed this in early 2012. Since then, Scalos has been part of the AROS distributions AROS Vision and Icaros Desktop, among others.

In mid-July, Krzysztof 'Deadwood' Śmiechowicz opened a discussion on Aros-Exec with the aim of improving the workbench replacement and ridding it of bugs after unifying the code base of Scalos for AROS x86 ABIv0, AROS x86_64 ABIv11 and AROS m68k. Only for AxRuntime there should be a separate development branch.

The developer has now released a new build V2022-07-21 with the following change notes:

Fixed:
  • Numerous crashes when working on 64-bit with 64-bit heap
  • Wrong background color of Scalos logo on Scalos splash window
  • Backgroung image of Scalos splash window and Scalos About window is not visible
  • Icon labels on desktop and in drawer windows are displayed using Topaz instead of Arial font
  • Font.prefs are not being loaded on 64-bit
  • Font.prefs are being wrongly saved on 64-bit
  • scalos.prefs are not being loaded on x86 and x86_64, scalos is using always default prefecens
  • scalos.prefs are being saved on x86 and x86_64 in format not compatible with m68k
  • NewPopupmenu.prefs is wrongly written
  • Plugins are not loading at Scalos startup
  • wbrexx.plugin is crashing at startup on 64-bit
  • Multiple controls missing on Scalos Prefs/Icons page
  • System crash when clicking on def icon image on FileTypes Prefs/Recognition page
  • Status bar, control bar, buttons sometimes don't have images displayed
  • Buttons in Scalos About window have white corneres rendered where they should be transparent
  • Crash when leaving out an icon
  • Crash when adding a User-defined Button to Control bar without setting it's properties in Scalos Prefs
  • Crash when removing any button from Control bar in Scalos Prefs
  • Scalos Prefs allows editing TTEngine font properties when TTEngine is not present causing crash in Icons/Labels and Text Windows/Fonts pages
  • deficons.prefs are not being loaded on x86 and x86_64
  • Reset to default in FileType Prefs and Save does not save prefrences
Won't fix:
  • Scroolbars visible on titles of TrueType Fonts, PopupMenu, Menu, FileTypes, Pallette and Pattern pages of Scalos Preferences
Not fixed:
  • Wrong rendering on DualPNG icons
  • Refreshing drawer windows is slow
  • Starting Prefs/Locale or Prefs/Input from Scalos causes other preferences to fail
  • Desktop wallpaper is damaged where Splay window was displayed
  • When started from Wanderer, after saving Scalos Prefs, reload does not re-open main Scalos window
  • Difference in behavior between Cleanup from popup menu and Cleanup from top menu - possibly due to missing plugin, check Cleanup association in Menu Prefs

Farming simulation: New beta version of Farmiga released
The Polish developer 'Tukinem' is writing a farming simulation in AMOS, called 'Farmiga' (amiga-news.de reported). Two days ago, a new beta version (22.07.2022) was released. Changes:
  • additional animal taxes
  • the shears can break when shearing a sheep
  • pests appear in agricultural fields
  • a new fence can be bought instead of a mill or cat
  • other minor corrections (e.g. the warehouse is now left with the return button and not with the right mouse button as before)
The new version should correctly load a saved game of a previous version. Minimum requirements: OCS/ECS, Kickstart 1.3, 1.5MB ChipRAM or 1MB Chip and 0.5MB FastRAM. (dr)

Kickstarter campaign: Production of 'Tank Mouse' starts soon
The Polish designer Lukas Remis had successfully finished a Kickstarter campaign for the re-release of the wireless Commodore Maus 1352 ((amiga-news.de reported)).

A few days ago the developer announced in a status update that the production of the Tank Mouse as well as of the chipset of the mouse will start soon.

The preparation would take about 45 days, and another 25 days the production of the first test batch. After testing and quality-checking the first units, the production will be started - and that part should take only around 3 weeks.

But there are some problems regarding the DB9 adapter: due to COVID and supply shortages, prices of some components went up twice or even more. Therefore, it cannot be manufactured the way it was originally planned and other solutions must be found. (dr)

8-/16-bit emulator for Mac OS and Linux: Clock Signal V2022-07-23 (update)
Thomas Harte's Clock Signal is an emulator for various 8- and 16-bit platforms aiming to be invisible to the user. The idea is to simply start the source medium without configuring the emulator oneself. Clock Signal is available for Mac OS and Unix-compatible systems. While there is also an Amiga emulation included, it "remains wilfully inaccurate" for now.

Two weeks ago, the latest version V2022-07-08 was released. Since our last news item the following changes have been added:
  • a regression in the previous release resolved, which caused the Acorn Electron and Vic-20 not to boot correctly
  • improved the 68000: the results of ABCD, SBCD and NBCD are now more accurate; timing corrections have been made to CMPA.l, CLR.b, CLR.w, DIVU/S, NEGX.b, NEGX.w, NEG.b, NEG.w, NOT.w, NOT.b, MOVE to SR/CCR, MULU/S, TRAP, TRAPV, CHK and TAS;
  • improved the 65816: to correct an error in (d), y addressing calculation; to correct a flag error in 16-bit BIT; and to improve timing to a variety of other instructions.
  • resolved a bug that prevented the Apple IIe and Enhanced IIe from detecting an attached disk drive
  • fixed an issue that caused the Amstrad CPCs to start with an unpredictable amount of RAM
  • more accurately observes the Amiga left and right screen margins

Update: (24.07.2022, 04:20, dr)

A few moments ago, version V2022-07-23 was released with the following changes:
  • corrects an error in Amiga HAM output that transposed red and blue channel modifications
  • improves Amiga sprite display: for programs that use both DMA and direct sprite accesses, and with regard to playfield interactions
  • rejigs the macOS binding to try to reduce CPU load and avoid a potential audio-ending race condition. Though it is now worse at scheduling across multiple CPU cores so there might be further swings of the pendulum yet to come.

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.1 / Firmware 1.2
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported). The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac.

Changes of Greaseweazle Tools 1.1:
  • New IMG formats: pc98.dd, pc98.hd
  • IBM FM, MFM: Fix bugs in raw track decoder
  • gw info: Report MCU information (type, speed, SRAM)
Changes of Greaseweazle Firmware 1.2:
  • Support AT32F403A MCU on F1 and V4 boards
  • Send MCU info to host (reported by gw info)
The Greaseweazle is available from various retailers. (dr)

Scorpion Engine: Pre-versions of 'Spy Hunter', 'Wonder Boy' and 'GothicVania'
Spy Hunter is an arcade classic from Midway that is currently being converted for the Amiga with the help of the Scorpion Engine (video). The pre-release version currently available for download does not yet contain any sound effects or background music.

Ryuichi Nishizawa's 'Wonder Boy' (video) is also an arcade machine conversion: it is inspired by the first part of the Wonder Boy series, for the Amiga only the successor Wonderboy in Monsterland has been available so far. An older alpha version can be obtained from the developer's website.

'GothicVania' (video) is a 'tech demo' demonstrating the features and the AGA support of the Scorpion Engine and included in the latest version of the engine. Among other things, a triple parallax scrolling is presented. It is currently unclear whether the game will ever be developed into a complete game. (cg)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.0
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Few weeks ago, version 1.0 of the Greaseweazle Tools was released providing the following changes:
  • New IMG formats:
    • ibm.1680, ibm.dmf
    • akai.800, akai.1600
    • ensoniq.800, ensoniq.1600
  • FM/MFM: Report unexpected sectors when reading
    • Gives a hint that the format specifier is incorrect
  • Minor bugfixes
The Greaseweazle is available from various retailers. (dr)

Preview video: Temptations port for CD32
The developer 'S0Y' is primarily dedicated to converting games to the Amiga platform using the game construction kit RedPill. After his Abu Simbel Profanation project, he has now begun the conversion of Temptations, a platform game originally published for MSX-1 in 1988. The basis for this, however, is a port for Android. With the author's permission, he uses graphics and music, but modifies some of them.

The music will be entirely in CD audio, as he plans to convert the game for the Amiga CD32. But if someone can be found to convert the music into mods, he might also create a version for the Amiga 1200. Basically, the goal is to create a conversion that is as faithful to the original as possible, but uses the improved possibilities of the Amiga. The screen mode seen in the video was chosen because it comes closest to the 8-bit variant. (dr)

Relaunch: Skin and Wallpaper archive Amiga-Look.org
Amiga-Look is intended to offer the user a central point of contact for everything he needs to embellish his workbench: Pictograms, themes and background images, but also MUI settings or mouse pointers. The site was last revised in January 2010. In the last few days, George Sokianos has dedicated himself to his site again and writes about the relaunch:

"I am delighted to inform you all that in the last few days I was working on my Amiga-Look website getting a refreshing update. I was waiting for this moment for a long time. After a few years when I kept this website almost disabled, I decided to update it and refactor it completely.

Amiga-Look is one of the first websites I created back in 2007, dedicated to the Amiga community. Here you can find themes, skins, icons and much more content of artwork for our Amiga systems. The goal is to help you beautify your Workbench and also have a place where people can share their creations.

This updated version of Amiga-Look adds a lot more security for all the users, has a responsive fresh look, is super fast and works fine with our AmigaOS web browsers without making your system crawl. No content is lost and all the accounts are still there, so go ahead, log in and upload your new creations.

If in any case, your password doesn't work, try to reset it and follow the email instructions. In case you need more help, please use the contact form at the bottom of the page and get in contact.

Amiga-Look is also a no-trackers website, since no external websites, analytics and sources are used. Also, I enforced the secure connection using the SSL protocol. So, your privacy is truly respected when you visit my little site." (dr)

Apollo-Team: Two other games announced
Kevin Saunders, graphic designer, artist and game designer (e.g. Boss Machine and RESHOOT PROXIMA 3) has given a taste of two games that are each being developed in collaboration with the Apollo team in two blog posts on Patreon:

Work has already begun on Apollo-X - Red Dwarf Star. The shooter, reminiscent of Xenon II in terms of gameplay style, is said to have much smoother action and better gameplay. In the included two-player mode, players will have the option to take different paths. Other features:
  • Resolution: 640 x 360
  • Colour Depth: 16bit, kann aber auf 256 Farben reduziert werden
  • 3-4 Parallax layers. (each layer having up to 256 colours but keeping that nice pixelartstyle)
  • Supports for both V4 and V2, With V4 providing extra features like stereo positioned audio, e.g. explosion sound position

In addition, work will soon begin on a remake of Mutant Monty (YouTube video of C64 version). As Kevin Saunders writes, he actually started working on the fantasy action game, originally available for 8-bit computers, back in 2001 when he had the idea to port 8bit games to the Amiga. Even though the Apollo team will start the development for the Vampire cards, he is happy to provide assets to interested developers for a conversion to AmigaOS 3. (dr)

Interview: MorphOS developer Jacek Piszczek
Many of our readers know Jacek Piszczek by his browser Wayfarer, first released in early October 2020, and his email program Iris, first beta version released at the end of March 2018, both for MorphOS.

But the developer has been active for MorphOS for much longer: the first mention of him in our database is in a news item about VirusExecutor 2.24 from July 2002, in which he is mentioned as the author of ReqAttack. With his transparent digital clock TranspoClock from December 2003, he is recorded on our website for the first time with an independent news item. High time to find out a bit more about this busy developer and talk about past and current projects.

Amiga-News (AN): Dear Jacek, thank you very much for taking the time for this interview. Tell us three key facts that the reader needs to know about you.

Jacek Piszczek (JP): Hello. Jacek Piszczek, 39yo and an Amiga users since 1996.

AN: Since you develop for the MorphOS operating system: what hardware do you use for it? And: do you use MorphOS as your main system?

JP: The three main systems would be a 2.3GHz PCIE G5, a 17'' 1.67Ghz PowerBook upgraded to a FullHD panel and a silent upgrade Mac mini. I have several more spares, but those three are the ones I do all testing and a lot of development work with. I especially love the PowerBook. As for the main system: how do we even define that these days? I use MorphOS in the evenings (unless I'm playing games), Windows for work and macOS on my PC. Since WebKit is pretty demanding, I'm using XCode and a Debian VM cross-compiler to build Wayfarer, but I try to do all the other MorphOS work on either the G5 or a PowerBook. Luckily Iris just links against pre-compiled WebKit binaries so I can work on it on MorphOS.

AN: Our readers know you as the developer of the MorphOS applications Iris and Wayfarer. But can you tell us how you got into retro systems in general? Even as a "simple user"? Were you focused on MorphOS from the beginning?

JP: They weren't retro yet when I've started playing with the Amiga. I went through an A500, then A1200/PPC which gave me a chance to learn E and C programming languages. A transition to MorphOS happened simply because that was the one available solution at the time.

AN: Did you also write software for other operating systems or only for MorphOS?

JP: I've started programming on Amiga 500 and a C64 so no, not just MorphOS. I've mostly been working as a programmer the past 20+ years and so I've had the opportunity to write code for a lot of platforms besides the Amiga.

AN: Can you remember your first (small?) project? Or did you start right away with Iris or Wayfarer?

JP: Haha, I wish I were talented enough to be able to come up with Iris as my first programming project. Seriously though, I believe my first actually usable application was a jingle player I wrote in AMOS for a high school event. Even wrote a custom self-layouting UI for it. Unfortunately the floppy with all the source code died on me later on...

AN: With your browser Wayfarer and your e-mail program Iris you gave MorphOS two programs that have a unique selling point among Amiga systems and don't need to hide from comparable programs under Windows and Co. What do you love more and why?

JP: My heart would be with Iris since there's a lot more of my own code in it. It was also the application that forced me to look for something to bridge a gap between modern programming techniques and MUI. After several weeks of researching various options I've started experimenting with Objective-C on MorphOS and ended up writing the two objc frameworks most of my MorphOS applications use these days. Without this step I'm afraid neither Iris nor Wayfarer would have been possible, at least not without major compromises.

AN: It's pretty incredible that one person can handle these two big projects. How much time do you spend on it in a week? And: is it fun? Or is it also a chore? Was there a time when you thought: This is getting too much for me, I'm quitting?

JP: I would say realistically I put about 15-20h a week into MorphOS and all of that is basically programming. But that's on weeks where I actually feel like it :) As for fun vs obligation I guess it's a bit of both. I like challenges but some debugging sessions can often feel like too much. The nastiest bugs I've had to solve in Wayfarer took weeks to figure out. Weeks of putting 2-3h into it every day. After that you just want to take a break, especially when essentially doing debugging work at my day job too...

AN: Is the combination "Jacek - MorphOS" a 'special case' or is it conceivable that also a single person writes a browser for AmigaOS 4?

JP: It's certainly possible to do it as a one person project, since it's been proven with other browsers we've had in the past (Sputnik, Odyssey). You do need someone who knows what he is doing, knows the OS he is dealing with (and is able to diagnose and fix bugs in the OS while at it).

To be fair, I did have quite a bit of help from Piru, especially in the early stages. He's helped with a lot of the compiler and OS issues like fixing phreads.

Still, you need person(s) who will put hundreds of hours of hard work into getting this done with no expectancy of getting paid (or getting paid the rates programmers at the required level would expect).

AN: Are you also - at least a little - familiar with AmigaOS 3 and 4? If so, can you explain if writing a mail program and a browser for MorphOS is easier than for the other two? And why? Or why not?

JP: MorphOS makes it easier because of all the work we've been putting into the system updates. Sometimes adding a seemingly small debugging feature to the OS can have a great impact on a browser project. Or Unicode support. Or a Notifications system. All of those things come together and make an impact when porting a huge project like WebKit. Yes, you could pack almost everything into the browser, but that'd make it a lot more work and wouldn't positively impact the whole OS. In that aspect, both AmigaOS 3 and 4 have stagnated long ago - for example AmigaOS 3.2 basically just re-implements things done by Haage & Partner 20 years earlier.

AN: Regarding this: I read in several forums that you would have been open to porting Wayfarer to OS4.1, but no one from A-Eon etc. approached you. That was in March 2021, has anything changed?

JP: All of my WebKit work is available to anyone on github. I don't have the time to port and then maintain another project of this magnitude so the best I could is to offer pointers to whoever wants to make his own port based on my work.

AN: Let's philosophize a little bit: Suppose the community, A-EON or whoever would donate to you for a port...What would be the result? Just the port or would you maintain it as well? And would it be based on MUI or Reaction?

JP: Making a port and then not maintaining it would mean the browser stagnating pretty quickly. A lot of major websites expect that you're up to date with what current Safari is offering, so things would start to deteriorate within a year or so. This is why I keep rebasing (updating my patches) to newer WebKit versions every couple of months (that's what results in Wayfarer's version number getting bumped).

All the really big Amiga projects use MUI, because it simply is the best UI we have from a programmer's point of view. I'm sure a ReAction version is doable, but if it means putting many extra hours of work, why bother?

AN: Mail program and browser are always a big topic in the Amiga community. Unfortunately, as a result of our research, we recently had to report that the development of the well-known mail program YAM has been discontinued. Did you notice this? Would you say that it would be easier to continue this project, e.g. by adding IMAP support? Or do you think it makes more sense to rewrite a mail program from scratch? Whereas we still have hope to see an update of SimpleMail....

JP: YAM died in 2000 when the original author stopped developing it, to be honest. I don't believe it to make sense to even try to add IMAP to it because the two protocols have a different philosophy. YAM was always about getting your mails to the folders on HDD, because that's what POP3 is really about - you are not meant to store emails on the server. IMAP is all about being able to access your mail from multiple clients at the same time. Bit hard to reconcile the two in an app that was designed for POP3.

AN: Can you describe to our readers how you got started with your mail program? Are there any ready-made program components that are open source that you were able to use for Iris? And how much time have you invested in the program so far? Can you tell? It seems that Wayfarer is the main project, but are there any plans for Iris?

JP: Iris started with Nicholai Benalal's port of libvmime. This is an open-source dual-license library that provides core mail functionality. As it is C++, the work quickly stalled since there wasn't a good way to use it without bridging it to MUI somehow. That's where Objective-C stepped in, but it actually took over a year where I could actually start working on the mail application. After that it took about three years of work to get it to a state where I'm mostly happy with it. Impossible to say how many hours I've spent on this application.

I have a roadmap for Iris and will be switching my attention to it again soon...

AN: Let's get back to hardware: recently the community funded a project initiated by Mark 'Bigfoot' Olsen to improve TinyGL (we reported). What do you think about this? Does this mean an immense boost for MorphOS? And why? What will be possible?

JP: There's certainly some exciting stuff you can do with better graphics card support, especially with shaders. I'm hoping I'll be able to use those in Enhanced Display. It'll also be interesting to see how video playback in Wayfarer may be improved with newer cards.

AN: As a developer, what do you think: is the current hardware situation satisfactory for MorphOS? On one side we have old Apple hardware, on the other very expensive new hardware (Sam, X5000). If you could choose: what would be your favorite hardware for MorphOS? x86 hardware? Is that possible in the near future?

JP: I think I'm biased because I like the PowerBook too much, but yeah, the hardware is becoming hard to buy these days. Sams are way too slow and an X5000 is both expensive and doesn't offer the performance the G5 Macs do. We'll see what happens about an AMD64 switch, I guess.

AN: About the software situation of MorphOS: what I miss at the moment is a proper word processor. Would it be possible for such an excellent developer like you to port LibreOffice or, a bit smaller, AbiWord to MorphOS? However, looking at AmigaOS 4, this seems to be a project of the century: first announced in 2012, beta testing started in 2017 and seems to last until today...

JP: LibreOffice is both huge and very, very messy. I'm no fan of cmake but I wish they used that instead of all the custom built stuff they've written. There's supposed to be a way to get it to work inside an SDL view, but it doesn't look like any platforms are actually using that. AbiWord looks a little less messier, but then it's only an editor. I want to look into one or the other, eventually, but the amount of other projects in my pipeline is already too much.

AN: Jacek, thank you very much for taking the time for this interview and, of course, keep up the good work on your projects!

If you want to support the developer, you can find a 'Donate' link on the Wayfarer and Iris project pages linked at the beginning of this interview. (dr)
