e.p.i.c. interactive: Status
Cartoon adventure The Feeble Files is now shipping for the Mac. If you want to find out more about green aliens, the Omnibrain and rebellions please turn to the projects section of our homepage.

Empire builder Knights and Merchants is now in final beta testing. The game is running properly with only a few bugs that need attention. We expect this game to be ready for release by the end of August. Watch out for the forthcoming demoversion of Knights&Merchants.

RPG/strategy mix Gorky 17 has, after many many frustrating setbacks with this project, entered beta stages on the Mac. We expect the game to be finished in September.

The release of Earth 2140 Mission Pack for both Mac and Amiga is scheduled for late august. The Mission Pack brings over 80 new missions to the original EARTH 2140 as well as 2 new buildings, 6 completely new units and one new terrain.

PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX: Comment about Amithlon development
Although I've only limited spare time available, I'm investigating the possibility of doing x86-native plugins for my software within the Amithlon-context.

Since diversification does not pay in the long term - especially given the limited time and the outdated current PPC platform for Amiga (200 MHz without l2-cache) those x86-developments may replace current PPC-support in my software completely. Support and testing for PPC, PPC/MorphOS and x86 would be too much.

Basically there's fewer people than ever ordering and registering software - this results in two considerations: first of all, it does not pay to buy a newer standalone PPC-machine, if it never will pay back. Secondly, if "no one else" is interested in this x86 stuff, it will be for my personal fun and needs, in case my 68k/PPC-Amiga once breaks apart. Amiga 68k/PPC-Software slowly goes hobbyist.

That were my 2 cents - I'd be all for an architectural elegant PPC architecture, but it did not happen in 6 years, and now it's too late in my personal opinion.

Nevertheless I've full sympathy for the MorphOS development and the other PPC-oriented approaches. But remember, I've been among the very first to support PPC on Amiga - but doing the same mistake again? No, not this time... (ps) (Translation: gf)

Hyperion Entertainment blasts idea of x86 Amiga OS
Press release: Following the recent article in AmigActive and the announcement of the "Amithlon" product at Amiwest, we received quite a number of e-mails of people asking us our opinion about the desirability of a x86 AmigaOS as opposed to a PPC native OS.

Would we support it? What would be the consequences of a native x86 for Amiga developers?

In one word: disastrous. A native x86 Amiga OS would spell the end of all serious commercial development for Amiga OS.

Before we argue our point, let's get a number of things out of the way here first:

The fact that Hyperion specialises in porting software for Windows has no bearing on our position because the Amiga market is only of marginal economic importance to us.

We moreover do not wish to be drawn into a debate about the respective merits of the PPC versus x86 architectures. Both CPU families deliver the goods in terms of performance and have their respective strengths and weaknesses. Unparalleled multimedia performance (Altivec), low power consumption and a clear 64 bit upgrade path for the PPC family and rapid development, raw horse-power and low price-point for the x86 family.

We also do not want to belittle the technical feats accomplished by VMC: their Amithlon product is technically impressive and very fast.

It also holds the danger of ending all serious commercial development for Amiga.

Why?

Because as soon as a x86 enters the picture, along tags Windows. In essence, the temptation for x86 users to have Windows installed in parallel to a native Amiga OS x86 will be irresistible and we will be seeing «dual boot» systems as we saw on Beos and now Linux x86.

Both Beos and Linux serve as a stern warning about what happens if you try to compete with Windows on the same hardware: you become relegated to a Windows add-on product without any native software to speak of.

Beos, despite being a very impressive OS, failed to get any marketshare, never had any serious applications and Hyperion has more game licenses than there were ever games for Beos.

Take a look at the Linux situation which we experienced first hand. How many native apps and games does Linux have? Despite the very large installed base, Linux only has one serious game developer (Loki) and the number of serious (non-server related) native apps can be counted on one hand.

The reason is simple: why would a software company invest money in porting its software to another x86 OS when it knows people can also boot into Windows or run an «emulator» like Wine or VMWare which allows you to run Windows software under Linux x86 at near native speeds? The costs could never be recuperated through sales.

The result is clear: nobody is buying any product for Linux. A major, brand-new game-title can at best expect to sell a few thousand copies on Linux and several tens of thousands on Mac. Plus on Linux x86 you need to keep your pricing in line with the Windows version (without having the benefits of the economies of scale that the Windows market offers) otherwise you will provide even more incentive for people to buy Windows products.

Linux x86 is currently relegated to the status of a Windows add-on with a lot of software (like the Corel products and media-players) just working on Linux x86 because it uses Windows code in some way or another.

Linux has carved out a very nice niche in the server and embedded systems markets but the desktop market is a joke with all major Linux companies closing down or shedding jobs because nobody was making any money with desktop Linux.

So when somebody asks you: who has the bigger market-share on the desktop, Red Hat Linux or Apple Mac, the answer is: who cares? The real question is: who is making (more) money on the desktop and what desk-top platform has a wider range of native applications and games.

Mac OS X could be brought to x86 relatively easily. The core of Mac OS X already runs on x86 but there isn't a hair on Steve Jobs' head that thinks about giving up his nicely insulated niche-market in favor of head to head competition with Windows on the same hardware. Apple wants its developers to stay in business so they can keep Apple's users happy by providing them with software not available on other platforms.

The resources that large commercial developers on Windows can command and the price-point they can reach by the sheer number of sales cannot be matched by developers on a niche-platform who can only survive in their niche-market if that platform is insulated from the Windows market.

People advocating a native x86 Amiga OS should look beyond the cheap hardware and understand they are condemning the Amiga desktop platform to become an emulation platform for old software with no new native software available.

Nobody but a handful of fanatics will pay more money to run a slower (partially emulated) version of the same or similar software on Windows when they can instead buy a cheaper, faster, native Windows-version which can run on the same hardware.

What good is cheap hardware when you have no software to run on your native x86 OS and you are forced to boot into Windows all the time? How long would it take before the development of such an OS would fall by the wayside because of low sales, which is exactly what happened to Beos?

Managing partner, Hyperion Entertainment (ps)

Nordic Global

Holger Kruse is back :)
I am afraid during the last year I have had virtually no time for Amiga-related things, have not been able to respond to communication on a regular basis, and my Amigas along with parts of my user and registration list have been powered down for quite a while. This is unlikely to change any time soon, although I expect to have some time during the next two months to at least partially catch up with email and help with registration-related issues. Whether I will have time for further development and participation in mailing lists etc. I don't know yet. Recently users have tried to contact me in very aggressive ways, e.g. through my employer. Please do NOT do that ! I cannot and will not respond to any Miami-related query sent to my employer. At best any emails sent there will be forwarded to my regular email address. Same for phone calls: my private line is NOT a support line, I only pick up calls from known callers (caller id), and support-related phone calls will not be returned. I have neither the time nor the inclination to come home from work only to deal with even more "computer stuff". I am sure you understand. For urgent, registration-related issues, bugs etc. please send email to "miami-support@nordicglobal.com". This is a new mailbox, so far spam-free, allowing me to respond a little more quickly than recently. It may still take a week or two though, depending on how much time I have. Please check this web page for new information. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Bernd ´Bernie´ Meyer (E-Mail)

Interview with Bernd 'Bernie' Meyer and Harald Frank / Amithlon-FAQ
On the AmiWest 2001 show Amiga, Inc. introduced the 'AmigaOS x86' product, which is about 'Amithlon' being an Amiga emulator developed by Harald Frank (VMC) and Bernd Meyer (UAE-JIT).

We asked Bernd ´Bernie´ Meyer and Harald Frank to give us some information about their project 'Amithlon' and sent them the following questions via e-mail:

"In our comments section the term of ´Amithlon´ is accumulating. Gary Peake named Harald Frank for the developer of this Amiga emulation for x86 in the IRC log-file from the AmiWest show. To deliver our readers some insight to your project we would be happy if you could account for giving us a somewhat closer view of your technic.

Of course we are in especially interested in how this idea to develop a new Amiga emulator for x86 platforms came up, which problems you met in doing it, how about the status of development, and of course from when and where the product will be available."

Bernd ´Bernie´ Meyer bothered creating a FAQ answering frequently asked questions. You will find this FAQ under the title link.

It must be pointed out that this is no official document from Amiga, Inc., but simply Bernd Meyer's answers to frequently asked questions to thereby clear up misunderstandings. Supposedly there will be a press release about 'AmigaOS x86' by Amiga published on the Amiga Inc. website within the next days. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
 July is often a dry month in this part of the world. Maybe that's why
there hasn't been much Amiga news? Perhaps it's dried up as well.
 Regardless, we have enough information to make a newsletter for you
and there are some interesting items in it.
 For one thing there are a number of Amiga shows coming up. Two of
them are set to kick off tomorrow (actually, AmiWest gets some
activities underway today). If you're in the area for either, please
attend and show your Amiga community spirit.
 We were going to include an article or two on the continuing feud
between Hyperion and Elbox, distasteful as that would have been, but
it appears these two companies may actually have settled matters. On
July 18 there was information to that affect posted to the net. We can
only hope that's true.
 You will notice a story below on Merlancia Industries recruiting new
employees. It's good to see an Amiga company expanding and we wish
them well. We also notice that they've apparently already been
rounding up Amiga talent. A quick look at their web site shows Amiga
legend Dave Haynie is now on their staff.
 And to round the month out, there's the matter of a new Power PC chip
announced by Motorola. Details are below.
 There may not be a lot of news, but what there is, is interesting.
 We hope you enjoy this issue.

14 Jul 2001

Hello,

 I would like first to congratulate you for your efforts to give us
the the information in your e-mag .

 Can you tell me if there is still support for Miami ?

 I received last year my registred-keyfile for the full package ( from
OS3.5).

 I tried since March to receive the MiamiSSL_USA . I send my request
from the register in the Miami-register program for the SSL file . I
received confirmation of my request a week later then nothing .

 I send email to kruse@nordicglobal.com two months ago at least ,still
no anwser
 .
 I download MiamiSSL from Aminet but it needs one of the two en-
cryption librairies which is my request .

 Can you help me to have this librairy .

Regards,
N.Renaud (Canada)
~~~~~~
Hello,
 As far as I know, there is no more support for Miami. However, it
continues to work fine and the international SSL library, at least, is
available. The difficulty is you are not supposed to use the
international version in Canada, and I believe you can't get the
US/Canadian version from Nordic Global. The international version will
work, of course, but downloading that and using it is not legal in the
US/Canada (Nordic Global's site does provide a link to download this
version for the benefit of non-US/Canadian users)..
 Does anyone among the readers have more information on Miami and SSL?
 Brad
Snoqualmie, WA - July 16, 2001
 Edivision LLC announced today that they would create game
applications for the Amiga Digital Environment (AmigaDE). The company
plans to create 3 development labels in the coming year for the
AmigaDE environment. The titles created under these labels will be
distributed through the Sharp Space Town web site for release in Japan
and through other Amiga distribution channels worldwide. Amiga and
Edivision also announced a joint relationship where Edivision would
provide key pieces of technology for the AmigaDE.
 The principals at Edivision have more than 30 years of experience in
the computer graphics field. Patrick Roberts created 2D and 3D effects
for Walt Disney's feature animation classic "Dinosaur". He has also
created software and animation for Dreamworks Animation, Disney
Classics and the Disney channel. Jeremy Engelman is one of the finest
3D artists in the world. His best-known work is the artwork for Cyan's
Riven, the sequel to Myst. Steven Haun is an award-winning computer
graphics producer with more than 10 years of experience in the
computer graphics and entertainment industry. His credits include
effects production for Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures, ABC, CBS,
and Fox Television.
 "This relationship with Edivision will offer consumers some exciting
content and an enjoyable experience that they will want to share with
others," said Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga, Inc. "Patrick,
Jeremy and Steven are longtime supporters of Amiga and we appreciate
their contributions to driving adoption of our software. With their
expertise in gaming and the entertainment industry, we look forward to
some revolutionary games for the PDA market."
 "We are very excited to be working with Amiga to generate compelling
content for the AmigaDE," said Patrick Roberts, one of the founders at
Edivision. "When Amiga announced their relation with Sharp, we saw
this as an opportunity to get in early on a new, exciting gaming
platform. Devices like the Sharp Zaurus and other PDA's offer the
ability to reach a new and different generation of gamers."
 Edivision will focus on original titles for its first set of
releases. The company is also negotiating with other content providers
to bring their titles to the AmigaDE platform.
 The market for video games in the United States, which includes
arcade, PC, console, and online gaming, is currently estimated to be
worth $11 billion. The AmigaDE platform allows developers to create
game applications that target this market. The binary portable nature
of AmigaDE content allows applications to migrate seamlessly from cell
phones and handheld devices to set-top boxes and up to desktop
machines and servers.
July 14, 2001
 World's leading consumer electronics firms push to create premium
contents platform standard. Sharp, JVC, Kyocera and the Tao Group
today announce the launch of the Open Contents Platform Association.
This move, initiated by Japan's consumer electronics giants, will
promote the global standardization of the intent(R) media platform as
a core on home and mobile connected devices, such as PDAs, phones, web
tablets, digital cameras and smart phones.
 The OCPA is a response to the proliferation of wired and wireless
devices with a requirement from carriers and broadcasters to deliver
premium contents to users. This trend of more devices has pushed up
development costs and increased application and device time to market
- an inevitable consequence when developing divergent software
implementations on every new product.
 The need for a flexible, open environment has become paramount. By
standardizing around Tao's open and pluggable platform, OCPA
manufacturers and developers will create powerful and differentiated
products, at the lowest cost and in the shortest possible time,
capable of running the kind of premium services required by operators
and broadcasters.
 Many of the world's leading technology companies, including
electronics manufacturers, content developers and software vendors,
will be joining the Association targeting the first general assembly
in September. Other major manufacturers that have already stated their
support to the OCPA will be announced at that time. Meanwhile, the
following companies have already publicly announced that they would
join the OCPA as of July 12, 2001: Bandai Networks Co. Ltd, Capcom Co
Ltd, Criterion Software Ltd., Digital Hollywood Corp, Espial Inc.,
Fujitsu Prime Software Technologies Ltd, HI Corporation, Justsystem
Corporation, Lineo Japan, Inc., MathEngine, plc., Mediaglue KK.,
Metrowerks Co., Ltd., Mobile Computing Technologies KK, MontaVista
Software Japan, Inc., Plazmic Inc., Prime Atlas, Inc., Sega
Enterprises, Sybergate KK., SSEYO Ltd., Taito KK., Web Soft
International Inc., Zoom Systems KK.
 Yoshio Mohri, President and CEO of Fujitsu Prime Software
Technologies Limited stated, "We are very pleased with the
announcement of the establishment of the OCPA. The full binary
portability of intent is undoubtedly now recognized as being the most
effective solution to enable the smooth distribution of enhanced
contents and software."
 Kazunori Ukigawa, President and CEO of Justsystem said, "As a member
of the OCPA, I am thrilled to contribute further to the market
development of Tao's open platform for multimedia content. Tao's rich
multimedia technology, based upon its unique virtual processor
technology, gives competitive edges to application and content
providers."
 Tao's intent is ideally placed as the core technology on open
platforms. It is independent of underlying hardware, operating system
and language and provides an exceptional high performance and small
footprint, branded multimedia Java(TM) software acceleration
technology authorized by Sun Microsystems. Francis Charig, the Tao
Group Executive Chairman, commented, "The establishment of the OCPA,
utilizing Tao's intent combined with a strong Sun compliant, Java
technology focus, is a response to the need for an open environment
across entire product portfolios. It will succeed in reducing time to
market and cost while enabling high quality, compelling contents on
the current and next generations of devices."
About OCPA
 The OCPA will provide a place for open discussion among content
providers, application service providers and hardware manufacturers,
regardless of their business fields. Members can present proposals for
new specifications, which will then be evaluated by working groups
within the Association, before their acceptance as standards, which
will then be openly published. The OCPA will also support verification
of Open Platform applications and contents, and will perform
promotional activities, such as seminars and exhibitions in order to
promote the OCPA specified platform standard.
About Tao Group Limited
 Tao has developed intent, a binary portable, language independent,
high performance, multimedia platform that is now used by many of the
world's leading OEMs in their client products for home and mobile
networks. The technology allows these companies to have a single
strategy across all of their platforms, irrespective of operating
system, hardware and function. intent is now being used in products
including smart mobile appliances and digital television. Tao's range
of Java(TM) products have been designed from their inception to
combine the Java language with Tao's multimedia to run real-world
content many times faster than any alternative. The Company was
founded in 1992, has offices in the United States, Europe and Japan
and counts both Sony and Motorola amongst its investors. Tao has a
growing and high value, global patent portfolio and is the recipient
WHO'S COMING TO AMIWEST 2001?
 Part of the attraction of Amiga shows are the people who attend. Our
community includes some of the most creative and interesting people
around. And as most of already know, those people have been the
catalyst for the continuing re-birth of the Amiga platform.
 So who's going to be there? Here's a partial list:
 Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga Inc. The ever-positive Bill
will give us the latest insights into the "benevolent dictatorship" of
Amiga Inc. and where our platform is heading.
 Gary Peake of Amiga Inc. will be with us to do an Amiga DE DevCon.
 Kermit Woodall, Nova Design, Inc. Creator of Image FX, Millenium and
all those other fine image-processing software packages.
 Randhir Jesrani, Compuquick Media Center. Since 1987, Randy has
supported the Amiga platform. He'll be here to greet old friends with
lots of Amiga classic hardware and software along with new products.
 Harv Laser, Amigazone legend. SYSOP of the oldest Amiga site in the
US (and maybe the world), Harv has been around since just about "the
beginning." Now affiliated with Merlancia Industries, Harv will be
with us to give us the latest on AmigaZone.
 Ryan E.A. Cerwinski, CEO of Merlancia Industries. Ryan will be
bringing his new computers in their current state of development for
us to see and (hopefully) order. Also lots of classic Amiga
software/hardware for your examination and purchase.
 Joe Torre, Amiga engineer. Joe has just bought his tickets, reserved
his room and in on the way to AmiWest 2001. His email said, in part:
 Hey man!
 I just finnished getting my flight and room booked. Thanx for the
better rate!
 I'm looking forward to chatting about Gateway days with Allan and
doing the Banquet again. . .
 Flights are still cheap this far in advance too!
 All the best!
JoeT. . .  Amiga, BeOS, Linux, QNX, Windoze
So many mice: with so many meanings....
 And this is just the beginning! We'll be releasing more names in a
few days. Keep checking our website at www.sacc.org/amiwest for more
updates!
Grafik: H&P release ArtEffect Plugin Collection
Haage & Partner released a plugin collection for the image editing software 'Art Effect' including more than 333 loader modules, frames, filters, and special effects. H&P wrote about this on their website:
«Finally - the biggest effects and filters collection for ArtEffect is available. It consists of more then 333 loaders/savers, borders, filters and special effects.
We heavily extended this collection since our first announcement. Now it also contains AE Superview with about 30 loader and saver modules.
Autolevel is a new filter that automatically corrects the contrast of a picture. This improves your scanned picture and those taken with a digital camera a lot. One of the best effects is Shine which adds a shine around objects. This effect is best know from the Glow icons. We also have a Glow effect that also adds a shine, but makes the object itself shine too.
It is important to mention, that Shine, Glow and most of the other effects (e.g. the popular "unsharp mask") will support layers or more specific: they can deal with the transparency of layers.
As a bonus we added the full version of ArtEffect 2. This version already support layers and so nearly all effects of this collection can be used. This makes the collection a full paint package.
This collection is the ideal and inexpensive tool to improve your scanned pictures and digital photos and to add amazing effects to them.» (sd) (Translation: mj)
CVS 1.11.1p1 - AmigaOS port BUGFIX - update
CVS is a tool for programmers that remarkably simplifies the version control of source code. More known under Unix/Linux this port to AmigaOS can be of use for one or another.
Some days after the release of a new version of the AmigaOS port of CVS 1.11.1p1 with ssh there's a new bugfix update on the homepage of the AmigaOS CVS project after some bugreports.
Within this an important bug has been removed that could make it impossible at times to check in files in remote directories via pserver or ssh.
It is strongly advised to all users of this port to update to this new version. The latest version can, as always, be downloaded from http://amcvs.light-speed.de/. (ps) (Translation: wk)
AmiWest 2001: first information in advance (update 2)
For the time being the AmiWest 2001 Amiga show is taking place in Sacramento (California). According first information AmigaOS for PPC, AmigaOS for x86 and AmigaOne hardware for November 2001 were announced. Detailed press material is said to follow until Wednesday.
Further details can be taken from this (completely uncut) AmiWest IRC log. As always has UGN made the resources for IRC chats during the show available. Also the obligatoric WebCam of UGN is already working, though the time shift has to be taken into account.
Amiga Active: New Amiga emulator for PC's
I just received the new "Amiga Active" reading about a new Amiga emulator for PC's using neither Windows nor Linux as it's OS base, but a not mentioned OS "which is not unalike the AmigaOS".
This emulator was tested by the editors on an 1.2 GHz Atholon, and is said to easily outshine everything, even the UAE JIT. It reaches multiple of the speed of the UAE and even of the speed of an 68060/50. Contrary to the UAE the AA emulation still doesn't work, thus one must widely abstain from games. But programs like Frogger or even Quake gave results embarrassing the performance of the PPC versions. The emulator reached their office near shutdown, name and programmer still are secret. Update: The Feeble Files for Amiga
Thomas Steiding of e.p.i.c. interactive entertainment GmbH wrote:
Last week we received a few more pre-orders for a possible Amiga port of the cartoon adventure The Feeble Files. At this time we have altogether 298 pre-orders, so 102 still are missing, which should be sent either to us (order@epic-interactive.com) or to a stockist like KDH Datentechnik, who participate in this project. This pre-order project will be valid thru 12. August 2001. If there will be less than 400 pre-orders until that date, unfortunately an Amiga version of The Feeble Files (and probably any further Amiga port by e.p.i.c.) will be impossible to be done.
Reminder note: The Feeble File requires an Amiga with a 4 MB graphics board, 32 MB of memory, and a 68060 OR a PPC CPU. The game costs 99,95 DM and will be shipping on 2 CD's with both German and English version. (ps) (Translation: mj)
Richard H. Poser released beta version 0.9428 of the AIM messenger AmigAIM. AmigAIM is a client to connect to the America Online Instant Messenger (AIM service). Following an extract from the program's history to take the changes from:
  • Modified handling of Context Menus in Buddy List Area
  • Online list - Selecting with Right Button...
    • Online Buddy Name: Will automatically select that name and then open the Online context menu
    • Offline Buddy Name: Does the same as above, but opens the Offline context menu
    • Anywhere Else: Context menu will reflect the already selected Buddy Name, if one is selected.
  • Setup list - Selecting with Right Button...
    • On Label or Buddy Name: Will automatically select that label/name and then open the context menu
    • Anywhere Else: Context menu will reflect the already selected Label/Buddy name
  • Modified Away, Online and Idle Time displays
  • Now displays time in Days, Hours and Minutes (If you actually get someone that idles for that long - I know someone that has idled for 2 days straight)
  • Found that warning display wasn't being handled correctly, as AIM sends out the value as a multiple of 10, such that 855 would equal 85.5. The display now calculates the correct value and rounds as necessary (Up, or down).
The article is about the career of Gabriele Lechner which is well-known from her time where she was Amiga-publishing trader and author.
Here is a small part of the article:
»You can certainly still remember the Amiga?", Gabriele Lechner asks as a precaution as she fetches her little old-fashioned book from behind the desk. Only few poeple of the current dotcom-generation know the highly popular homecomputer of Commodore in the 80s. According to Lechner the Amiga was not only a computer - it was the beginning of her career as an employer. Because her publisher of that time only wants to publish her book about the Amiga very hesitantly she founded her own publishing house overnight.«
You can find the full article under the title link. (ps) (Translation: dr)
CVS 1.11.1p1 AmigaOS-Port SSH-Update released
After two months since the first complete, ixemul.library indpendent release of the AMigaOS port of CVS the authors (Olaf Barthel and Jens Langner) have released a new update of the port.
In the last version the SSH support was missing and so some requests for an implementation are send in. In this update it is fully integrated. So with this version it is possible via SSH to check in/out directly from CVS servern. This is needed fo example for Sourceforge-Accounts.
Besides many other important bugfixes since the last version now in this update are processor optimized versions (020/030/040/060) contained, this should give enhanced speed performance.
The latest version you will find here: http://amcvs.light-speed.de/ (ps) (Translation: gf)
NSM-Page
Midi: camd.library V40, CamdBnp-Tools
The camd library v40 as well as the CamdBnp tools for BarsnPipes were released on the NSM page.
'camd' is a shared library for midi, which is part of the AmigaOS. Due to several problems with the original one and because there was no camd.library for AROS, this library was completely new programmed. This one should work like the original one and was successfully tested with 'BarsnPipes' 'Radium', and the 'CAMD' toolkit.
An additional driver 'mmp' and a special camd midi driver for WinUAE are available for download for this library.
The 'camdbnp.lha.zip' archive contains 64 tools for BarsnPipes, which should simplify the communication with other programs. The 'camd library' is used for this communication.
'camd40.lha' and 'mmp.lha' contains both binary and source code (APL, AROS Public License). The includes are part of the AROS source code and also available via e-mail.
In co-operation with Denis Unger the Amiga Arena makes the release of "Foreign Language Master V2.3" possible! FLM is a program for foreign languages that can be used as a dictionary for text translation and to learning of vocabularies.
FLM contains some English-German dictionaries (all in all about 8 MB with about 175,000 entries). Denis Unger continues developing "FLM". For a new version of "FLM" Denis Unger would be pleased to receive concrete suggestions for improving the software and to receive feedback! Further information and data bases for use with "FLM" can be found here, contact: flmdic@gmx.de.
GFX-BASE: poll results and font tutorial
On the GFX-BASE you can now find the results of our latest poll. We had 331 votes regarding our question which graphics board you use/own. Have a look yourself to see which one got the most votes.
Additionally we have a new (English) tutorial. It's all about fonts. We explain the use of different fonts and font tools as well as the conversion of different font types that you can use on the Amiga. We also deal with webfonts and the use of fonts in word processors.
And then we have received again some more entries of games and scene demos that support graphics cards. More to follow soon. (ps) (Translation: wk)
Role-playing game: Exult 0.93alpha4
Rüdiger Hanke writes:
My Exult port for Amiga is available for download on my homepage. Exult is a role-playing game engine which can interpret Ultima 7 datafiles. Ultima 7 still captivates after many years with an epic storyline, a vast world and many details. You can find some screenshots on my webpage.
The story: 200 years have passed in Britannia since your last visit as the Avatar. Driven by the mockery of a demonic creature calling itself "The Guardian", you travel once more to Britannia and arrive in Trinsic on a scene of gruesome murder. Maybe the new organization "The Fellowship", which is gaining more and more influence in the lands, is involved in it? Or maybe this is just the beginning of a larger plan that might endanger all Britannia?
Required is an Amiga with FPU and graphics card as well as the original PC game by Origin. Please note that the files on the disk version are usually packed and have to be installed on an MS-DOS system to get the required files. Alternately, the uncompressed game is contained on the "Ultima Collection" CD-ROM. As a small goodie for the Amiga I have included a preferences program with which you can change all game options with a graphical interface on OS3.5 and above.
An interesting tidbit: While porting the game, I found a sourcecode to read IFF files. Indeed, some of the Ultima 7 files are in IFF format. Even the chunk lengths are in Motorola and not Intel byteorder ... (ps) (Translation: rh)
e.p.i.c. interactive: Feeble Ubdate
Thomas Steiding of e.p.i.c. interactive entertainment GmbH wrote:
Update & FAQs about The Feeble Files
As announced last week we require at least 400 pre-orders to enable an Amiga port of the cartoon adventure The Feeble Files. Including today's entries we received 232 pre-orders and we are hoping, that the following days will bring the rest. The game can be pre-orders from us (order@epic-interactive.com) or from any stockist.
With the enclosed FAQ we hope to be able to answers some frequently asked questions regarding the announcement.
Q: What is The Feeble Files about?
A: The Feeble Files is the official sequel to Simon The Sorcerer II by the British Adventuresoft company. Feeble is a little green alien having the task to make circles in grain fields on earth. He lives in a world restrictively ruled by the Omnibrain and he is an honest citizen never violating the group's big catalog of rules. But one day this kind hearted gawky stumbles into a full-grown conspiracy against the Omnibrain. As one can see from the screenshots on our homepage, the characters of this game are fully rendered. The game comes along with complete German or English spoken samples. The German games magazine PC-Games rated the title at 80%, then. The German vocals came for example from the German movie voices of Brad Pitt, Whoopi Goldberg, and Roseanne. More information and topical Mac screenshot are to find on our homepage.
Q: What Amiga do I need for The Feeble Files?
A: The Feeble Files requires an Amiga equipped with a 4 MB graphics board and 32 MB of memory. Furthermore a 68060 OR a PPC CPU is required. Theoretically the game would run on a 68040/40, but sure would be very very slow on this configuration.
Q: When will the game be out?
A: As soon as we have received 400 pre-orders (no matter if those were directly ordered from us or from a vendor - who forwards the orders to us), we will start to port the game to the Amiga. Due to the porting engine of our leader of development, Paul Burkey, the game then should be shipping for the Amiga within 6 weeks!!
Q: Will there be more Amiga games from e.p.i.c. interactive?
A: Theoretically it would be possible to port to the Amiga more games currently available for the Apple Macintosh. But since license fees for other games, e.g. like in case of the Settlers clone Knights&Merchants or the RPG-mix Gorky 17, are much more expensive (and hence the number of sales to be expected for an Amiga version must be higher), it is clear: If The Feeble Files port will not become reality, we don't need to start thinking about more games. AROS News
As already reported there were hardware problems with the server hosting the AROS website. Some good and bad news about that: the good news is, that the hardware will be replaced, the bad news is, that the machine will be connected to a new network and thus the page temporary might not be available, again, due to DNS conversion.
Here the original message with more details:
As you might have noticed, we had a lot of hardware failures in the last months. Now there are good and bad news. The good one is that the hardware will be replaced. The bad one is that the machine is moved to a different network and this means that we'll have DNS hell all over again ! The "real" name of the machine on which AROS is hosted is "sebigbos.hepe.com". This name should work when aros.org doesn't. So when CVS doesn't like you anymore, check AROS/scripts/updatecvspath to fix the host name until I have fixed the DNS server (usually takes only several weeks...hrm :-). The mailing list runs on lists.hepe.com. The only thing which will not be reachable for the time being is the web and the ftp site.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
mSQL database administration program
Who ever dealt with SQL database systems soon realized that in fact only mSQL comes into question for working offline.
mSQL is the most compact and resource sparing SQL-DBMS for the Amiga. One example to point this up:
The mSQL daemon requires less than 10% of the resources the MySQL daemon needs and even can react 4-times faster on client requests via mUSD (unix socks daemon).
The biggest disadvantage of all SQL systems for the Amiga is the lack of any GUI software for administration and database care.
That's why I wrote a program named mSQL-Administrator, which contains the operation of the following executables of the "mSQL.bin" directory:
msql, msql2d, msqladmin, msqldump, msqlexport, msqlimport, relshow, and mUSD. (ps) (Translation: mj)
Edivision LLC working with Amiga Inc.
Edivision Teams Up With Amiga To Develop Exciting New Content
Snoqualmie, WA - July 12, 2001
Edivision LLC announced today that they would create game applications for the Amiga Digital Environment (AmigaDE). The company plans to create 3 titles in the coming year for the AmigaDE environment. The games will be distributed through the Sharp Space Town web site for release in Japan and through other Amiga distribution channels worldwide. Amiga and Edivision also announced a joint relationship where Edivision would provide key pieces of technology for the AmigaDE.
The principals at Edivision have more than 30 years of experience in the computer graphics field. Patrick Roberts created 2D and 3D effects for Walt Disney's feature animation classic "Dinosaur". He has also created software and animation for Dreamworks Animation, Disney Classics and the Disney channel. Jeremy Engelman is one of the finest 3D artists in the world. His best-known work is the artwork for Cyan's Riven, the sequel to Myst. Steven Haun is an award-winning computer graphics producer with more than 10 years of experience in the computer graphics and entertainment industry. His credits include effects production for Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures, ABC, CBS, and Fox Television.
"This relationship with Edivision will offer consumers some exciting content and an enjoyable experience that they will want to share with others," said Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga, Inc. "Patrick, Jeremy and Steven are longtime supporters of Amiga and we appreciate their contributions to driving adoption of our software. With their expertise in gaming and the entertainment industry, we look forward to some revolutionary games for the PDA market."
"We are very excited to be working with Amiga to generate compelling content for the AmigaDE," said Patrick Roberts, one of the founders at Edivision. "When Amiga announced their relation with Sharp, we saw this as an opportunity to get in early on a new, exciting gaming platform. Devices like the Sharp Zaurus and other PDA's offer the ability to reach a new and different generation of gamers."
Edivision will focus on original titles for its first set of releases. The company is also negotiating with other content providers to bring their titles to the AmigaDE platform.
The market for video games in the United States, which includes arcade, PC, console, and online gaming, is currently estimated to be worth $11 billion. The AmigaDE platform allows developers to create game applications that target this market. The binary portable nature of AmigaDE content allows applications to migrate seamlessly from cell phones and handheld devices to set-top boxes and up to desktop machines and servers.
Edivision Press Release
Los Angeles, CA - July ##, 2001
Edivision LLC announced today that it has signed a distribution agreement with Amiga, Inc. Amiga, Inc. will have world-wide distribution rights on software titles Edivision will produce using the AmigaDE operating environment. Also under the agreement Edivision will make technology it develops for its AmigaDE titles available to Amiga, Inc.
Edivision LLC will create 3 development labels over the next year that run on the AmigaDE platform. Two labels will be exclusively devoted to entertainment titles, while the third will provide utilities, drivers, and extended functionality. Edivision will focus on original titles for its first set of releases, but the company is also negotiating with other developers to bring their titles to the AmigaDE platform.
"This relationship with Edivision will offer consumers some exciting content and an enjoyable experience that they will want to share with others," said Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga, Inc. "With their expertise in gaming and the entertainment industry, we look forward to some revolutionary games for the PDA market."
"Titles created for the AmigaDE are capable of running unmodified on a number of platforms including PocketPC, Zaurus, Windows, and Linux. This gives us a tremendous advantage in bringing a title to market." remarked Steven Haun, CFO of Edivision. "It allows us to focus development on the title itself and not the limitations of cross-platform least common denominator intrinsics."
Genetic Species for Gameboy Advance petition
Milan Pollé (author of the site, but not the petition pages) write:
Seeing the FPS games announced for the Gameboy Advance started me thinking about the awesome Amiga game Genetic Species, by Marble Eyes. This game is an FPS with really great atmosphere and elements borrowed from the classic 'Paradroid', like being able to take over the bodies and skills of your enemies.
As this game worked well on low-end Amigas, about three years ago, I thought it might be possible to port it to the Gameboy Advance. The developers of this game worked for three years on it and only sold hundreds or at the most a couple of thousands of copies, as the Amiga market had shrunk when the game was completed, but also because of piracy. Needless to say the developers were really disappointed.
I coined this idea in the Gameboy Advance forum on www.ign.com and people were really interested in this game, so they started contacting the developers, who were suprised by the sudden attention this game got. At the moment the developers are looking into the possibilities of doing a port.
We ask anyone interested in a Gameboy Advance version to sign our petition. Even if in the end a port won't or can't be done, it will show the developers that their work is appreciated by a lot of people. (ps) (Translation: sk)
The ExoticA website deals with the music capabilities and history of the Amiga.
On the website you will find exotic Amiga music, demo information, Amiga games cover-scans, utilities, disk magazines, and more of nostalgic and historic value from the Amiga world.
On 14. July 2001 the site was updated and many new things were added:
  • The 'BP-SoundMon-section' was extended.
  • Missing Newsflash issues were added - this disk magazine contains many exclusive software and music reviews.
  • 'The tracker history' is now online, again, and can be found in the 'Info-section'.
  • The 'Demo Scene Reference Manual' and 'The Demo Pack Reference Manual' were extended very much.
Closer information can be taken from the news site of ExoticA. (sd) (Translation: mj)
Olaf Koebnik wrote:
Amiga Arena Full Version
With permission of Mark Ford the Amiga Arena makes possible the release of 'The Prophet'.
'The Prophet' is a role game released by 'Alive Media Soft' in 1999. Unfortunately a number of problems occured, hence more than one year of development were in vane for Mark F. The 'Amiga Format' rated 'The Prophet' at 81%, those days.
'The Prophet' is available in English, only.
Some features:
  • more than 200.000 locations
  • non-linear game flow
  • HD version
  • different enemies
Amiga Arena Status Report
Due to holidays and Amiga's future in the air activities decrease somehow, at this time.
Several things are in the works, but I don't want to put you off with announcements (unfortunately that's what others are doing sufficient!). :-(
Also it becomes more and more difficult to achieve special prices for shareware software, cause almost no market remaining.
Ideas and tips are always welcome!
Also I'm still wanting someone who would like to translate interviews and texts.
The end of Amiga-Society?
On 17. July 2001 the Amiga-Society would have had their first anniversary. After the initial problems on start-up, the end of A4EP, etc., etc., etc., the new page was taken offline (for the time being).
Hence among other sites also the mirror of the Big Book of Amiga Hardware and the new Schlachtfeld website were disabled. On 17. July an opinion poll shall determine whether or not we should continue the pages / projects. But the previous feedback rather indicates the end of the project.
AMIGA Inc. News
press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amiga joins Tao in its plans to support Open Contents Platform Association
Snoqualmie, WA - July 13, 2001
Amiga today announced its support of the Open Content Platform Association (OCPA), The Tao Group, along with Sharp, JVC and Kyocera, launched the OCPA today to promote the creation of a flexible and open environment that will benefit hardware vendors and content developers.
The Amiga developer community is the largest and most experienced at creating applications targeting the intent platform from Tao. Amiga developers are well known in the industry for creating compelling multimedia applications. Amiga is already working with a number of Tao partners to deliver games and productivity applications for the intent platform.
"The standardization of the intent platform will help Amiga's development community target a broad number of hardware devices", said Bill McEwen, the President and CEO of Amiga, Inc. "Our experience with intent has shown that it is an excellent platform for building multimedia applications. We have more than 18 months of expertise in creating application that run on intent and we look forward to working with the OCPA to share our experience with them."
"Amiga has been an excellent partner with a worldwide development community that can benefit from this initiative", said Francis Charig, Chairman of the Tao Group. "Amiga's inputs will be valuable to the working members of the OCPA and we welcome their participation."
Amiga offers developers a number of programs and products to help build applications. The Amiga SDK (available at http://www.amiga.com) offers a development environment and tools for developers. The Amiga Support Network (http://www.amigadev.net) offers developers a forum for discussion, mailing lists, and other infrastructure for joint collaboration efforts.
Amiga has also signed a distribution agreement with Sharp Corporation that allows content created by Amiga developers to be distributed on Sharp Space Town. Sharp Space Town provides applications and other content that run on the Sharp Zaurus and other Sharp PDA devices. Amiga also offers distribution channels for worldwide markets.
Hyperion and the StormC 4
Steffen Haeuser wrote:
After our reactions on the "StormC 4 news" I was asked by Ben Hermans to explain our position on this topic to clarify some misunderstandings and falsifications.
At Heretic II times we were using a "self development" called gcc-WarpUP, a self standing port of gcc to WarpUP and 68k. This compiler had the substantial disadvantage that no debugger - very important for program testing and fast bug fixing - was available (and wasn't easily made, either). Besides that the compiling speed was quite slow (despite PPC exe), and there was no GUI available. At that time this compiler was the only alternative, though:
  • SAS/C: Even when leaving aside the missing WarpOS support, this compiler isn't really suitable for a "big" PC port. Doing a PC port there's normally a heavy use of C++, and when a compiler isn't 100% compatible with the standard used by compilers like gcc/VisualC++/Metroworks CodeWarrior - inclusive possible "enhancements" of these compilers - doing a port is made much more difficult, if not even impossible. It may well be possible to develop a C project with such a compiler but not a C++ project. The only one of our projects being not C++ was Heretic II. And the most of our projects rely HEAVILY on C++, with STL and all things belonging to it. Because of that we don't feel like doing long ports and then, when linking, having to realize that the compiler isn't compatible enough with gcc/... making a compiler change necessary.
  • vbcc: In my opinion this is a great compiler, too, but as it doesn't support C++ using this compiler is completely out of question for us. Besides that we prefer a commercial product. In case of bugs you may demand a fast bugfix, or you get telephone support or so. But sure, the vbcc is a good compiler - but it simply doesn't suit our needs. By the way: vbcc has no source level debugger, either (wosdebug is not source level but assembler level).
  • StormC 3: For StormC 3 (in contrary to 4) counts the same as for SAS/C - a special compiler not compatible enough for the Amiga market.
Now Haage&Partner have decided to drop their "own" code generator in favour of the gcc code generator - what was welcomed by us - with the version 4 of StormC. That means: StormC 4 has more in common with gcc-WarpUP than with StormC 3.
That means that with StormC 4 you get all what you get with gcc-WarpUP but additionally you get the special features of the StormC that gcc-WarpUP doesn't offer:
  • A superb source level debugger
  • 40% faster compiling than with gcc-WarpUP thanks to optimizations (in the PPC version)
  • A significiantly more efficient I/O linker library
  • A profiler for 68k and PPC
  • A graphical IDE
  • The possibility to compile via network
  • (Partly) Object file compatibility with StormC 3 and vbcc-WarpUP and SAS/C 68k
  • The possibility to create mixedbinaries
  • The possibility to easily create PPC shared libraries
  • Support possibilities from the developer (very important for us, no matter what compiler !!!)
Though this sounds like advertising: For a developer of commercial software there's simply no alternative to StormC 4 on the Amiga. And I don't see any rason why people absolutely want to talk about an alternative.
If I only think of the many weeks (!!!) of work the debugger of StormC 4 has shortened my work on the port of Freespace. These are REAL working hours I have saved through this.
By the way, the BSD compatibility of the includes of StormC (as gcc derivative) is considerably better than the one of the CodeWarrior includes for MacOS.
Amiga chooses H&P's StormC as official development environment
July 14, 2001
Amiga Inc is pleased to announce that it is partnering with HAAGE&PARTNER GmbH, of Glashuetten, Germany in order to provide Amiga developers with a world class development environment.
Amiga Inc is working closely with HAAGE&PARTNER to provide for the first their flagship StormC developer package will become the official Amiga Development System. This will see StormC  providing transparent, language independent support for both the AmigaOS and the AmigaDE.
"Amiga is committed to moving application development forwards to support our new architecture." said Fleecy Moss, Chief Technical Officer of Amiga Inc. "This means dynamic, persistent components, descriptive, location independent interfaces, brokered services and a complete separation of design from implementation. HAAGE&PARTNER have spent many years creating a simple, easy to use, yet powerful development package for the AmigaOS, and we are delighted to be working with them as we push forwards.
"We are very pleased about the Amiga certification on StormC", said Jürgen Haage, General Manager of HAAGE&PARTNER GmbH. "This certification is a quality assurance for Amiga Inc. and guarantees the Amiga developer community a continuous further development of our StormC development system."
Hyperion Entertainment: Warp3D for Voodoo 3
We are pleased to announce that our Voodoo 3 Warp 3D V4 drivers for Prometheus (both 68K and PPC) are now fully completed.
We are currently in the process of rewriting the Warp 3D license agreement so you can expect the full driver package in the course of the next week.
As we are still getting e-mails about the Elbox situation, we would like to point out that we have not heard from anybody at Elbox for over two weeks now.
At this point it appears to be highly improbable that we will ever see 3D drivers for the Elbox's range of PCI products.
Again, we would like to ask everybody mailing us about 3D support for Elbox PCI hardware to contact Elbox rather than Hyperion Entertainment.
We cannot be held responsible in any way for the lack of 3D support. If 3D graphics are important to you, we advise you to look into purchasing a competing PCI product."
Soundtrack and Boing beachballs sought
My name is Bernhard Kellerer, I am Creative Director of the London film production company "iMagic Films Limited". I am Amiga fan since 1987, foundation member of the Austrian Amiga Club Tirol and still convinced that we'll be "Back For The Future" one day. What always fascinated me about the Amiga is the community that sticked through thick and thin with our "girlfriend". And just this community it is that gave me this idea.
We will soon film a commercial for an Austrian town. It is a low budget production which is made possible only through the (mostly) free of charge working volunteers. Despite the low budget, the 30 - 40 second spot will certainly have a high cinematic standard. It is about a young woman who is catapulted from a dreary surroundings into a fascinating dreamworld. About 150 extras, some fire-eaters, pyros and confetti bombs will provide a proper spectacle. The spot will be shown in many cinemas.
Now we're looking for a piece of music which accompanies the dream journey of our protagonist. GEMA-free music is out of question, but a real movie composer too expensive. Here the community comes into play: there are many talented musicians in the Amiga MOD- and demo-scene who could easily compose a soundtrack for us. Maybe an already existing piece could be modified. We haven't agreed on any music style so far and are thus open for everything.
Since nevertheless some conditions regarding length and structure of the piece should be obeyed, I suggest that people who are interested in the project contact me directly by e-mail.
As a special insider gag it's supposed to rain boing balls which the local firemen will let fall down upon the extras from a net affixed to a ladder. For this, we need a larger number of boing beachballs. And here again the community is asked: who can do without his beachball before the summer vacation? Which dealers have maybe still boing beachballs in stock and could put them shortly at our disposal? Maybe this commercial could later be adapted as an AMIGA commercial.
My postal address is:
In the last weeks we received quite a few e-mails and requests for an Amiga version of our upcoming Mac conversion of the cartoon adventure The Feeble Files. Since porting the game to the Macintosh is now completed we have evaluated the possibility of an Amiga version of this great game. An Amiga version would require an 060/PPC equipped Amiga with 32 MByte RAM and a graphics board (4 MB). The game would come with complete English and German speech versions on at least 2 CDs. You can find more information on this great title in the projects section of our homepage.
Because the Amiga market has declined over the past 12 months and porting a game to another platform is always also a financial risk we have decided to start a preorder campaign for The Feeble Files Amiga: If we receive at least 400 preorders for this game we will bring The Feeble Files to the Amiga. Porting the game from the Mac to the Amiga should not take more than 6 weeks, so that the game could theoretically reach Amiga users by early September. Please send orders to order@epic-interactive.com. The game will cost Euro 51,10 (plus shipping). If you wish to pay by credit card please contact KDH Datentechnik. (ps) (Translation: rh)
Merlancia Industries
Dave Haynie: CTO of Merlancia Industries
Dave Haynie is the new CTO of Merlancia Industries. Dave Haynie might be well known by any Amiga user, cause he's a kind of living legend. The following is a brief summary of his career so far:
Dave Haynie studied electronic engineering at the Carnegie Mellon University. After his studies four month of employment at General Electric he was hired by Commodore in September 1983 to support their "TED" project, which was started by Jack Tramiel. Later the C116 emerged from the "TED" project. While his times at Commodore Haynie decisively worked on many projects, like several 8 bit machines (e.g. C128), the Amigas A500, A2000, A2500, A3000, and A4000, Zorro-III, and he took part in the development of the AA and AAA chipsets, etc..
All in all he spent 11½ years at Commodore. 'Beside' of that he wrote about 50 articles for Amiga magazines of those times; Amiga Sentry, .Info, Amiga Transactor, Amazing Computing, Amiga World, etc.. Furthermore he wrote some developer tools and the FFS tool "DiskSalv".
Some of his 'stations' at Commodore:
  • 1983: Commodore "TED" project, low-cost VIC-20 replacement.
  • 1984: Commodore 128 project, the sequel to the venerable Commodore 64..
  • 1986: Amiga 2000-B - slot-based Amiga. He designed the gate-array (Buster) and a "coprocessor interface" for the CPU slot.
  • 1988: Amiga 2620/2630: 68020/30 CPU cards for the Amiga 2000.
  • 1989: Amiga 3000: First fully 32-bit Amiga architecture. As a co-creator of the system, he designed the basic system architecture, the Zorro III expansion bus standard, and the "Buster" bus control gate array which implemented Zorro III.
  • 1991: Amiga 3000+": initially a product oriented design, this coupled the new Amiga "AA" system/graphics chipset, an AT&T DSP3210 media coprocessor, 16-bit audio and modem CODECs, etc. Management changes canceled the project, though some of its "DNA" lived on the Amiga 4000 and 1200. He also developed basic modular "Acutiator" architecture for next-generation Amiga systems.
  • 1992: Developed 32-bit SCSI controller for Amiga 4000, architecture for stand-alone DSP add-in cards, and prototype of "AAA" motherboard, for Commodore's 4th generation, 64-bit Amiga graphics system. System works, but by 1993, there's no money left to fix the four full-custom ASICs.
  • 1994: Developed plug-in graphics subsystem for the Amiga. Commodore declares bankruptcy, this is never built.
Haynie created a 2-hours video about the last day at Commodore and the goodbye-party, known by the name of "The Deathbed Vigil and Other Tales of Digital Angst". This video for example is as a bonus content of the "Amiga Forever" CD by Cloanto.
After his times at Commodore Dave Haynie worked for the Scala Inc. company for a short time, where about 80% of the former Commodore engineers met, again. In November 1995 Amiga Technologies contracted him to consult for the PowerAmiga project. He developed a concept, but due to Escom's financial problems this project got canceled.
After that, in May 1996, Haynie was contracted by the PIOS Computer AG, where he was in charge of the hardware. Shortly before founded by Stefan Domeyer PIOS engaged also other former Amiga Int. or Commodore employees, among them such clinking names like Dr. Peter Kittel and Andy Finkel. PIOS formed up to become a successful distributor of PowerPC hardware and to make the PowerAmiga dream reality - the term of "PiosONE" was born.
Later from the PIOS Computer AG the Met@box AG emerged, a group of meanwhile six companies with among other things Settop boxes as part of their product line. Me@box made application for insolvency in May 2001.
More stations on Haynie's way:
  • 1999 - Fleecy Moss started the KOSH project to develop a new open source operating system for the Amiga - Dave Haynie is responsible for the hardware. systems and audio.
  • 1999 - The "Phoenix Platform Consortium" to define the Amiga's future was founded - beside of Dave Haynie also Carl Sassenrath, RJ Mical, Wolf Dietrich (Phase 5), and Dan Dodge (QNX) were part of it.
  • 2001 - In July Dave Haynie became CTO of Merlancia Industries.
He contributed information for the "The International Technology And. Computing Historical Association" ITACHA, who collect 'artefacts' from technic and computer industry and make these information available online. Unfortunately at this time there is only one page about the "C65" available.
Also a really rich source for Amiga devotees are the "The Dave Haynie Archives".
Last but not least it might be to mention that he became known and dear to many of the Amiga community as a an unweary, all-time helpful co-worker/partner/friend. (ps) (Translation: mj)
CNet: Psion leaving handheld business
Psion, who were about to utilize the AmigaDE for future PDAs, will leave the handheld business. The reason might be that Psion do not have enough financial resources to compete with PalmOS or WinCE products.
The share declined in price to it's all-time-low during the last weeks. But Psion is working on the Netbook. It is obscure to what extent these changes will affect the use of the AmigaDE. (ps) (Translation: mj)
CD32/CDTV-Corner moving
Unfortunately I'm not able to update the CD32/CDTV-Corner more often, at the time being. The server space decreased more an more, so the site now move to a new server. The new address is: http://home.nexgo.de/cd32-allianz/
Along with this move new possibilities raise for the CD32/CDTV-Corner, cause now other CD32 and CDTV freaks can help working on the website to design it more interesting and topical. Everybody wanting to help now can contribute own content, as long as this content matches the subject of the page. Who is interested and means business will get all access data via e-mail promptly.
If this test of organizing a webpage with several webmasters will succeed, this will sure affect other homepages, too. A very interesting test, I think. (ps)
NARR-site: Skin for MUICD-player and MI-set for PlayGUI
Richard Kapp writes:
All those who do not like the OS 3.9 CD-player and miss a graphically appropriate other one should risk a peep at MUI-CD player where you can exchange the graphical buttons. On my homepage you can download a gfx-set with aqua-look for the great CD-player ´MUICD-Player´. The alternative images glow and give away when clicking them. Have a look at a screenshot.
Maybe it encourage some users to create their own sets?
Besides this some areas have been changed. There are now more current screenshots and a MI-icon (thanks to Martin Merz!) image set for PlayGUI which also contains a special MI-skin. (ps) (Translation: dr)
