AmigaOne: Driver for the AC97 onboard sound
Davy Wentzler acquaints, he build a working AC-97 driver for the onboard sound of he AmigaOne board with the help of Stephen Brookes.

Mainboards from recent production runs are not equiped with the Sigmatel chip, which resides left to the AGP slot, any more.

The first version of that driver is very basic and offers only replay and a CD in monitor, there is no volume setting or other functions yet, but should be added later on.

If you have an AC97 chip and are going to use the driver, the author would welcome a PayPal donation of 5 Euro.

Book: "Version Control with Subversion - For Subversion 1.1"
Version control systems like CVS and Subversion are used in software development in particular. They support multiple developers working on a project at the same time, and every state of a project, that was previously saved, can be restored at any time, for example, when a new idea has turned out to be the wrong way, and then you would rather pick up from where you were a week ago.

In his journal entry, Sven Drieling describes his first experiences with Subversion, states possible applications for a version control system, and gives an account of his impressions from the online book Version Control with Subversion -For Subversion 1.1.

Subversion exists for the Amiga and for MorphOS, too. (cg) (Translation: cad)

The picture viewer WarpView uses Warp3D (and with it, the 3D hardware of your computer) for displaying pictures. The advantage lies in very fast and high-quality scalings (screenshot) that are thus possible, however, the program requires more Video-RAM than conventional picture viewers. Datatypes are used for loading the pictures. Voodoo graphics cards are not supported yet. (cg) (Translation: cad)

Website: Commodore Amiga Information Source closes

"Dear Amiga Friends,

In the last weeks and months, I have been getting around to updating my Amiga web page less and less. Therefore, I have the following announcement to make: The articles from Commodore Amiga Information Source will migrate to the Amiga Future web page in the following weeks. Whether into the article database or somewhere else, remains to be seen. Andreas and I will try to haul as many articles as possible from my website.

In return, my page will go offline soon. The guestbook, my forum and the ML will also be affected by this. Therefore, I am already referring to the forum of AMIGA Future or the forum of Amiga-News.

This move does not come easy to me, but I am pleased that the content is preserved through Amiga Future.

On this path, I'd like to thank all Commodore and Amiga friends, who have visited this website regularly and provided me with praise and criticism in the 4 1/2 years.

Sincerely yours,

Guido Mersman has been working on "ValiantVision," the successor to AmithlonTV, the TV card driver software, for some time. As he discloses in his developer journal, a driver for the Philips saa713x chipset has reached beta status in the meantime.

This very widespread chipset offers better picture quality than the bt8x8, supported by AmithlonTV/ValiantVision until now, and supports two picture channels. Thus, it will be possible to display a freely scalable (preview) picture, while in the background, the picture is displayed in full size through the second channel. (cg) (Translation: cad)

MorphOS: Port of the game "UHexen2 - Hammer of Thyrion"
Michal 'kiero' Wozniak has adapted the game "UHexen2 - Hammer of Thyrion" by Ozkan Sezer and Steve Atkinson in a extended way for MorphOS (screenshot 1, 2). A graphic card with 3D-drivers as well as the tinygl.library and the powersdl.library are required.

For the installation you need two files of the original game: pak0.pak and pak1.pak; you have to copy those ones to the directory data1. Then you can start the update-script.

If you also want to enjoy the colored lighting you need the Colored Lighting-files. The .lit-files which the archive contains belong to the directory data1/maps.

Cloanto (e-mail)

Press release: Cloanto Releases Amiga Forever 2005
Cloanto's official press release about the shipping of Amiga Forever 2005 (amiga-news.de reported):

Cloanto Releases Amiga Forever 2005

October 7, 2005 - Cloanto released today Amiga Forever 2005, the official Amiga emulation, OS, connectivity, history and support suite, now featuring 20 GB of software, data and videos to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Amiga computer.

Amiga Forever 2005 is available in three editions:
  • Online Edition (downloadable installer for Windows systems, $29.95)
  • Plus Edition (downloadable CD ISO image with Windows and platform-neutral additional content, $39.95)
  • Premium Edition (a physical package containing the Plus Edition CD, two DVDs and an Amiga "Boing" epoxy dome decal, combined with an instant download of the installer for Windows, $59.95)
Previous versions of Amiga Forever included more limited multimedia content on a single CD. After almost two years of work, the new Premium Edition version features more than five hours of "must-see" videos on two professionally-authored dual-layer DVDs.

All versions of Amiga Forever include Amiga OS 1.3 and 3.X files that make it possible to run "Classic" Amiga software (including thousands of legally-downloadable games, demos and other Amiga applications) on any PC, with special support for the Windows platform, but also compatible with Mac OS X and GNU/Linux systems.

On the software side, the new version makes use of XML-based technology to more easily download, install and run Amiga games and demos, more of which are now also included in the package itself. Amiga Forever 2005 introduces several changes that will make the transition to Windows Vista as smooth as possible (and it already runs fine on the latest beta, too), especially if the Amiga emulation and OS are hosted in an environment that does not have administrator privileges. But Amiga Forever is not just about games and videos: professional users will for example appreciate the improved SCSI-passthrough functionality and drivers, a feature that is missing even in high-end "virtual systems", and that aims to assist in the recovery of old data that may otherwise have been considered lost.

Last but not least, the Premium Edition features the new "Boing" decals, which Cloanto originally introduced with the launch of Amiga Forever 1.0 in 1997. The new epoxy dome decals are printed in three colors on brushed metal, and, by popular demand, will from now on be included in every package.

At the same time, the Amiga Forever web site at www.amigaforever.com just went live with over 200 new or updated pages. The site includes additional information about the different versions, including screenshots, technology tutorials, links to game and demo download sites, and much more.

As always, the Amiga Forever Team at Cloanto would like to thank the Amiga Community for its support over the past 20 years, which made everything possible, from the first steps developing software for the Amiga, to this new version of Amiga Forever.

Windows development suite with Amiga/68k crosscompiler
AmiDevCpp is based on the free development suite Dev-C++, but the generic compiler has been replaced with an AmigaOS crosscompiler. Thus, it becomes possible to develop and compile programs for the Amiga (m68k) while using the Windows environemt.

The integrated development suite offers a decent and mighty work tool (screen shot). With the packet system even beginners are able to install new includes and libraries.

Most packets also include examples which work instantly, even programmer newbies can make their first Amiga program without typing a single line of source code.

The development suite comes with a windows typical installer, which is multi lingual and includes a deinstaller, too.

Bug reports, critics and suggesions are most welcome if placed at the programmer board by amiga-news.de. (snx) (Translation: ub)

MorphOS: Software news up to 02.10.2005

DiskSpeed 4.9

DiskSpeed, the program for determining harddisk access speed, was ported from AROS to MorphOS by Ilkka Lehtoranta.

Download: DiskSpeedPPC.lha (82 KB)

ezTCP 0.6

In the meantime, the PPC-native TCP/IP stack ezTCP by Pavel 'Sonic' Fedin is available in alpha version 0.6. The problem with domain names starting with a number was solved. Additionally, together with the separate usergroup.library, which is now ported as well, the use of programs based on the ixemul.library is also possible.

Download

usergroup.library 4.1

The usergroup.library was separated by Pavel 'Sonic' Fedin from his TCP/IP stack project and serves solely compatibility purposes. It is merely required by programs based on the ixemul.library in interaction with the TCP/IP stack, even though Amiga operating systems represent only single user systems anyway.

Download

XDME 1.84

XDME concerns a texteditor that was ported to MorphOS by Ilkka Lehtoranta.

Download: XDME-PPC.lha (1,4 MP)

XInvaders3D 1.3.6

XInvaders3D is a clone of the game Space Invaders (Screenshot) based on vector graphics, which was, likewise, ported to MorphOS by Ilkka Lehtoranta.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

This has been a rather quiet news month, with few strong stories to
report. However, sometimes what you lack in quantity you make up for
in quality. One story in particular is an eye-opener and, we think,
very important. That would be the entry of a new manufacturer in the
Amiga One arena. Check out our lead story on the Guru Meditation /
Troika partnership. Great news!
Also good news, for those who want to read a paper Amiga magazine in
the wilds of North America, is the new arrangement announced by
"Total Amiga" just today. Glad to see this effort undertaken, and
"kudos" to all involved.
Hmmmmm. Maybe it wasn't such a quiet news month, after all.
We hope you enjoy this issue.

Gothenburg, Sweden, September 24th, 2005

Guru Meditation and Troika NG are pleased to announce a joint
partnership in creating the next generation AmigaOS 4.0 motherboard.

Ever since Guru Meditation first heard about Troika, they gathered
every little bit of information about their proposed board. Finally,
contact was made.

Troika, who greatly respects the business Guru Meditation has built up
in short time, found it very easy to partner with them.

Resources provided by Guru Meditation are now being utilized by
Troika's project "Prometheus". Troika believes that with the
additional resources that Guru Meditation is providing they double or
triple their effective man hours to finish the project faster, and
thus bring the board to production sooner!

Andreas Loong of Guru Meditation said, "With this injection we hope to
see the board ready and in production earlier than expected. It also
means some interesting possibilities for the future.". He further
added, "Looking at the specifications and the current shortage of
hardware in the market spurred us on further, and we believe this will
be a very nice addition, especially as a developer board. However,
developer boards doesn't rule out other configurations, and we are
confident that Troika and Guru Meditation is a winning combination".

Josh B. of TroikaNG commented "Guru Meditation is very well known for
good quality service and support in the AmigaOne Community. We are so
pleased for Guru Meditation to bring additional resources into the
Troika design".

The Amy'05 is a mini-ITX form factor computer based around the PowerPC
750FX microprocessor. It is intended to be a low cost, legacy free
system aimed at the embedded/home server market running versions of
Linux and the Amiga OS4 operating system.

Although modest by modern hardware standards, Amy'05 has been designed
in such a way as to leverage the highest performance possible with
enough system throughput to make the best use of the PPC processor.
The design has very much been balanced for performance and price.

Guru Meditation & Troika NG

/Guru Meditation/ was formed late 2003 and started off very modestly
as a reseller of Amiga equipment and AmigaOne hardware. In mid 2004
the decision was made to acquire the rights for Directory Opus to
bring it back to the Amiga platform as the start of a new program of
expansion to help kickstart the Amiga market back into life.

/Troika NG/ formed to provide the next generation in PPC computers,
based on the Troika "reference design". The final goal being, the next
generation Amiga at a very reasonable price/performance.

Total Amiga magazine is happy to announce a reduction of about 25% in
the cost of a 4 issue subscription posted to the USA or Canada. To
acheive this we have come to an agreement with Greg Condon, from the
PANORAMA Amiga user group of Vancouver, to print a second run of the
magazine in Canada. Printing in Canada reduces our postage costs both
within Canada and to the USA enabling us to dramatically reduce the
cost of a subscription.

A four issue subscription to either the USA or Canada will now cost
only 15UKP (about 26USD) as compared to the the old price of 20UKP
(35USD). Copies of the current issue of Total Amiga will now cost USA
and Canadian buyers only 4.50UKP (8USD) compared to 6.00UKP
previously. Back issue prices will also be reduced once back issue
from the Canadian print runs are available.

Please note: all USD conversions are approximate, based on the current
exchange rate at xe.com.

As a "thank you" for their support, and to reflect our reduced costs,
all existing subscribers in the USA or Canada with two or more issues
outstanding on their subscription will have an extra issue added free
of charge. This will happen automatically. Subscribers who have
supplied us with an e-mail address should receive a personal e-mail
confirming this over the weekend.

Orders for Total Amiga subscriptions to the USA and Canada will
continue to be taken via the Total Amiga web site (where you can pay
using your credit/debit card via PayPal) or through ForeMatt Home
Computing who can accept credit card orders over the phone. The new
US/Canada pricing is available on the Total Amiga web site now.

Total Amiga is also available through local Amiga dealers in many
countries. We will be offering dealers in the USA and Canada a similar
postage cost reduction from the next issue onwards. If you are a
dealer interested in stocking the magazine please visit our web site
for more information.

We hope this price reduction will benefit our existing subscribers in
the USA and Canada and will also enable more Amiga users in those
countries to enjoy the only English language print Amiga magazine
currently available.

Total Amiga would like to thank Greg for volunteering to take on the
responsibility of printing and distributing the magazine in North
America.

Software Hut is pleased to announce that we are the North American
distributor of the newest version of this popular emulator. This is a
must have release of the ever popular Amiga Forever emulator. For the
thousands of our customers who have bought previous versions of this
great program you know that Amiga Forever allows users to turn their
PCs into virtual Amigas. Because of the speed of today's PCs, you can
run many applications much faster than you ever could with an actual
060 equipped 4000 Tower.

Among the new features of Amiga Forever 2005 include 2 full dual
layer, professionally mastered DVDs packed with Amiga videos that are
available nowhere else. There is almost 6 hours of video including the
much sought after full version of the Deathbed Vigil. Also included is
a CD with Amiga Forever 2005 including these great features:

- Original Amiga ROM and OS files (all versions from 1.0 to 3.X)

- Additional emulation and drivers (RTG, SCSI, TCP/IP, AHI, CDTV,
  CD32, etc.)

- Preconfigured WinUAE and WinFellow emulation engines with
  auto-updates

- Preinstalled games, demos and applications (web browser, paint,
  etc.)

- Support for thousands of downloadable Amiga games and applications

- Amiga Explorer and Amiga Files data sharing framework

- Optionally-bootable CD, based on KX Light (boots any PC into Amiga
  OS)

- Special features and gallery of items of historical interest

- Much, much more...

Even though Cloanto has added 2 full DVDs and all these features the
price is still the same as previous versions! A full version of Amiga
Forever 2005 is only $ 54.95 and an upgrade is only $ 34.95. For
existing owners, the upgrade is the full 2 DVD, 1 CD version and is
available to anyone who has an existing version (any version # from 1
to 6) of Amiga Forever installed and who has access to their Amiga
Forever serial #. Check our web site for more info on all the new

28 September, 2005

I've successfully compiled Battle of Wesnoth.

The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a
fantasy theme, and is now available for Amiga OS4.
Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate
heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of
mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the

humans who dared despoil your lands. Wesnoth has many different sagas
waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and
write your own schenarios - or even full-blown campaigns. you can also
challenge your friends - or strangers - and fight multi-player epic
fantasy battles.

to run it (for now):

Assign USR: YourPath:path_where_wesnoth_exec_is
run wesnoth

f.e.
assign USr: DH2:Wesnoth
run wesnoth

When it starts, it is a little bit slow. so don't worry for the black
screen. It has many options that can be passed to the command line. So

Apache HTTP Server is an open source HTTP web server for Unix-like
systems (BSD, Linux, and UNIX systems), Microsoft Windows, and other
platforms.

This is the fourth release of my port of Apache 1.3.33 to AmigaOS 4.0.
It includes support of PHP 5.0.4 and MySQL 3.23.49 and has now a
working cgi-module.
The previous version with PHP4-support is also included. It is
possible to run these two versions at the same time, so you can test
your code under both environments.

All important features are working now, so this is the first full
release. This does not mean that developement is stopped ;-)

Version 0.8.28 of the portable Amiga emulator has at last been
released, at great cost to the sanity of the maintainer.

Binaries are available for AmigaOS (both AmigaOS4 and classic 68k
machines) and for the AmigaOS clones MorphOS and AROS as well as a
Linux, MacOS X and BeOS.

This version features a tweaked AmigaOS graphics driver which now
works properly on AmigaOS4 update #3 and the OS4.0 build offers better
performance, an improved SCSI emulation (this lets you access host
CD-ROM drives directly), AmigaInput support and at last a useful CD32
emulation.

Two OS4.0 builds are available - one which uses the native graphics
driver and one which uses the SDL library. The former does not yet
support E-UAE's Picasso96 emulation, so if you want to emulate an
Amiga with a graphics card, use the SDL version for now. Otherwise,
the non-SDL version offers better performance (especially for the
CD32 emulation).

MorphOS: AIFF/AIFF-C, RIFF WAVE and Sun/NeXT audio player for AmiNetRadio
Three new player plugins for AmiNetRadio 3.x have been released by Christian 'tokai' Rosentreter.

wave.player 3.10

The player reads RIFF WAVE (Resource Interchange File Format Audio Waveform) files and supports mono and stereo samples which are stored in 8bit - 32bit linear PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) or with A-law, µ-law, Float 32bit or Float 64bit compression.

aiff.player 3.3

This player adds support for Apple's Audio Interchange File Format. It reads mono and stereo AIFF/AIFF-C files, and as wave.player it supports samples stored with 8bit - 32bit PCM or compressed samples with A-law, µ-law, Float 32bit or Float 64bit data.

au.player 3.2

The last one of the trio is for Sun/NeXT Audio files. It supports interleaved mono and stereo data which is stored in Big- or Little-Endian byte order. Like both other players it understands 8bit, 16bit, 24bit and 32bit linear PCM and A-law, µ-law, Float 32bit and Float 64bit compressed samples.

All three players come with documenation and are freeware. You can get them at the title link. (snx)

MorphOS: Alphaversion 0.4 of ezTCP has been published
The PPC-native TCP/IP-Stack ezTCP by Pavel 'Sonic' Fedin is now available in its alpha version 0.4. ezTCP is a MorphZone-Bountyproject with a current donation status of 1095,73 US-$.

What's new in this version:

1. Memory trashing bug at last fixed. Try the DNS resolver, now it should work reliably with or without DOMAIN records in the resolv.conf.

2. Version of bsdsocket.library updated to 4. Now many applications will run.

3. CLI environment tools (Ping, ifconfig, route) now report if they can't open bsdsocket.library instead of quitting silently.

Remaining known problems:

1. usergroup.library is still not built, but it's on the way. So - no compatibility with ixemul.library yet. But you can try to override this by copying usergroup.library from AmiTCP (Genesis) distribution to LIBS:.

2. ezTCP kernel can't be used as a Genesis kernel replacement yet. There is some problem with the configuration, the kernel just hangs when loading configuration files (the same problem as Slawek Kaminski reported with previous versions). So I don't advice to change the location of configuration files for now. But you still play with this on your own, nice if you succeed. I just have no time to investigate this yet, I'm already a little not in my timeline and need to speed up.

Troika and Guru Meditation disclose cooperation (Update)
On the occasion of the British event Big Bash 3, the Swedish dealer Guru Meditation and the young hardware smiths Troika disclosed their cooperation in the development of the mini-ITX PowerPC board "Amy'05". The aimed production costs per board lie under 400 British pounds (around 590 Euros).

Meanwhile, Troika presents itself on the web with a new homepage, which, apart from remarks about the previous history of the project "Prometheus," which is now designated as "Amy," also specifies more components of this board than those known so far. However, the prototype that was announced for the event in Peterborough is no longer completed on time.

The specifications of the planned PowerPC board:
  • Processor: PPC 750Fx processor with Active (fan) cooling. Soldered directly to motherboard.
  • Northbridge: Tundra Semiconductor TSI107 Northbridge device. This provides access to SDR RAM memory and the PCI bus amongst other things.
  • Ethernet: RTL8110 Gb/100/10 Ethernet controller.
  • USB 2.0: 5 x High Speed USB 2.0 ports: 3 rear connectors, 2 front connectors.
  • ATA 100/133: Sil0680 ATA133 controller. Supports 2 channels (4 devices). Full ATA 100/133 transfer rates, DMA bus mastering and RAID (Raid is dependent on OS drivers).
  • Audio: CMI8738 6-channel 5.1 surround sound with audio headers. Support for Line In, microphone (Analogue) and SPDIF (digital input).
  • PCI slot: 2 x 33 Mhz, 32bit.
  • SDRAM: 2 x DIMM memory slots (REG PC133 SDRAM. Max of 1GB)
Update: (08:05, 25.09.05, snx)
According to a message from the developer, differently from stated, the upper limit of 400 British pounds should not be about the production costs, but about the end user price. (snx) (Translation: cad)
