Game: Tales of Tamar Amiga-Version V0.37R6
'Tales Of Tamar' is a round based internet game from Eternity Entertainment Software available for all platforms.

With this version 0.37 R6 for Amiga you can see for the first time OnScreen animations with full colour update. From now on one after another weapons and buildings will be integrated into the following versions. Very pleasant from the players. All animations are running even on a 68030 with AGA! Also on Amigas with gfxboards now animations with changing colourpalette per frame are no problem. A result of the extraordinary work of this Bindel :-).

The latest version of the Battle-Lost-Screen is added. It is another piece of fine art from Dieter Zenteck. (ps) (Translation: gf)

The latest version of the Toccata-Emulation for the Repulse soundcard is available. Thanks to Christian Haldenwang who placed us a VLabMotion and a Toccata at our disposal so we could fix some bugs. The Toccata-Emulation works now very fine with MovieShop. So the Repulse is the perfect replacement for the Toccata. (ps) (Translation: gf)

Eyetech Statement on AmigaOne/OS4
On the AmigaOne mailing list Alan Redhouse responds to requests regarding the AmigaOne / OS4.0 development status and to reclamations regarding the long period of time without any new announcement.

>>The Eyetech timeline hasn't been updated for over a quarter (northern hemisphere tm.) ;) and as I see it, we are, in a way, partners with Eyetech and Amiga Inc. and so it would be courteous and helpful if they could give us some kind of update on the situation. Delays if necessary are fine (well, y'know what I mean) and I certainly don't want to add to the pressures that Alan and Eyetech etc are already under, but I think it would be reasonable to break the silence.

>Would giving you / anyone on this list / me more information affect how many units they ship? Businesses aren't courteous because they're, well, because they're businesses I guess.

It is about business, not about a lack of courteousness and, particularly, the A1 project is not a reality TV show or soap opera.

This is a complex, specialist project that no large (sane?) company would undertake for a small and diminishing market. The end result has to be affordable, despite the small production runs so the whole development has to be done under very tight cost control.

Of course in any complex project there are snags and solutions, holdups and breakthroughs almost daily, many of which are outside our and our partners control. However it is our collective jobs to sort them out professionally and not to conduct our daily business lives as if we were on Big Brother, Loft Story (or whatever its called in your country).

This is also made more difficult by us trying to be as open as possible within the bounds of NDA's and the propensity of mailing lists to rumourmonger. We have deliberately kept this list open, but the commercial downside is that Bill Hoggett misses no opportunity to promote Amithlon and knock the whole PPC concept, Paul Qureshi doesn't love Eyetech (for some reason that I'm unclear about) and thinks Elbox's rumoured solution is best. And we know Ralph Schmidt is in the list representing the interests of bplan who are also intending to compete for the contents of Amigan's wallets. All that means that we have to be even more aware of the misinterpretation of any information that we put out.

Its also common and public knowledge (ie Bill said it in his St Louis speech) that Amiga Inc are having difficulty raising their second round of finance since the tech meltdown earlier this year. This has inevitably had an effect on the level of resources that they have been able to put into the A1/OS4.x project, and there has therefore had to be a reallocation of financial and operational responsibilities within it across the other partners. This all takes time (and money) to sort out and so, yes there have been some delays. And it is obviously important to treat all the A1/OS4.0 work as a single project because it is clearly not feasible to sell the hardware in advance of the OS being ready - all you get then is a very expensive but not very functional paperweight.

However OS4.0 is now well under way and looks like it will make a November release, but maybe not the 1st.

So why has there been silence?

- Everyone wants certainty in announcements, either to plan and be reassured, or to snipe and start rumours. There is no point in making announcements while negotiations are still proceeding and therefore some aspects of the outcome are still uncertain.

- Amiga Inc has been on the verge (and still is) of obtaining a substantial funding package for the past few months, which would clearly change the resources available for the project substantially. We have all been hoping to make a joint news announcement incorporating this and its effect on the A1/OS4.x project.

- There are many individuals providing input to the project and they all need to be consulted prior to making substantive announcements. In fact I'm probably breaking my own code of conduct in this respect by posting this note.

Ok thats not a lot, but its all this list is getting from me today. I hope it helps.

Alan

PS Several people have commented that they think we have a monopoly supply position with the A1 board. Well we do have the only PPC product that will run OS4.0 (although we are pressing for OS4.0 to be released for the Cyberstorm PPC as well), but that is because OS4.0 needs an existing Classic Amiga chipset to run. In theory there would be nothing to stop someone (eg bplan) designing a pci card with the classic chipset on and using it as the basis of the classic compatibility on a CHRP-compatible board. But the economics of doing this just don't add up, particularly when A1200's are readily and cheaply available (the type - PAL or NTSC - doesn't matter) and there would be a significant amount of additional work in porting/testing OS4.0 to work on this new card. Given the small market size there is really only scope for one A1-type product. If someone else had been mad enough to decide to build one we would almost certainly have decided to drop out - so there would still have been only a single product to choose from.

Jürgen Haage (E-Mail)

H&P answers questions about AmigaOS XL FAQ
As reported H&P made a German online FAQ about the emulator AmigaOS XL available. After reading the FAQ I asked Jürgen Haage some questions concerning the point 30. Following you will find the answers.

FAQ:
30. What about AmigaOS 4.0?
The development is managed by Amiga Inc.

Question to H&P:
AmigaOS 4.0 should be exhibited with the AmigaOne in November this year. Does the follwing sentence mean that H&P is not currently working on AmigaOS 4.0 for AmigaOne?

Jürgen Haage:
As you may know the discussion started early this year. The first prototypes were planned for March. We planned the development of our part of AmigaOS4 according to this date. The first presentation was expected for the St. Louis Show in April...
But up until know we still have no hardware to develop for.

FAQ:
It is mainly a porting of AmigaOS 3.9 to PPC. Only some few new components are planned for this release. They are also available for 68k and could be easyly used with Amithlon/AmigaXL. But this is a decision of Amiga Inc.

Question to H&P:
This means that it is only some political decision made by Amiga Inc. if OS4 will be available for Classic-Amigas?

Jürgen Haage:
There are some important assumptions to be able to make a political decision. I do not think that these assumptions are available at the moment.

Aminet: Initial beta version of the new amiNET.GUI
Alexander Kurtz wrote:
The amiNET.GUI is being reworked completely to be changed from a static HTML site to a dynamic PHP script.

This will bring much advantages to the users.

Now I'm able to offer the dowload pages in several languages and can even add more languages without any problem.

Moreover an automatic debriefing of the MOD (Message Of the Day) is possible. So the user immediately will be informed about trojans or viruses, if appear in the Aminet.

Before long it also will be possible to automatically let create a message on the news page, if you upload using amiNET.GUI

Soon I will be able to offer an operative version of AULA.

An initial beta version of the new amiNET.GUI is online. This is far from containing all of the functions, but already views the direction the amiNET.GUI is going.

My ambition is to get the amiNET.GUI off beta status until the Amiga meeting on 17. November 2001 in Bremen, Germany.

I would be very happy to learn about your opinion and/or suggestions, cause the amiNET.GUI wasn't made for me only, but for you. (sd)

Genealogy program for Amiga in the works
Sven Dröge is working on a genealogy program for the Amiga. The idea for this program came him when Sven looked at his father-in-law who was doing some investigation about his family. That man entered personal data into some software on the PC. The PC software owns an export function into the GEDCOM format, the default data exchange format for family tree data. Sven Dröge asked his father-in-law to open such a file for him, and he got information about this format from the Internet.

As further investigation showed that such software doesn't exist for the Amiga, the decision was made to program a genealogy program himself. ´Dynasty´ was born and the plan is to make Dynasty that genealogy program for the AMIGA. You can read about already realized resp. planned features under the title link. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Scanner calibration software ICS for AmigaOS 4?
Volker Grabbe has asked Wolf Faust, the programmer of the scanner calibration software ICS, about the future development of this software. With permission by Wolf Faust we release the questions and answers:

Volker Grabbe:
Good day, Mr. Faust, as I use on my A4K Scanquix 5, I'd like to ask you a question. What about coming support of the AmigaOS 4.x from your side? May Amiga Inc. possibly have approached you because of your product to be integrated into the OS?

Wolf Faust:
No. AmigaOS 4 is at least for me rather far away. Neither was I asked about it. And even if so, right now there's simply a lack of time for something like this. And even if there would be time there had to be something happening financially to view OS 4 as development platform. In the end the investments into OS 4 have to pay back sometime. Many of the developments here in the last time are extremly expensive and would almost be not financeable even in the best of Amiga times.

Volker Grabbe:
I didn't want to embarrass you with my questions yet I am curious about the future.

Wolf Faust:
Quite clear: there'll be only developments that aren't Amiga specific. But Amiga users make profit of the expensive developments for PC/Mac. It would be inconceivable for example to realize the coming offer for transparency units only for Amiga users. The investments alone for the machine/working time are running into the hundreds of thousands.
But when I look at the little number of accesses by Amiga users to my website etc. I'm beginning to doubt that even this makes still sense in the long run. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Discussion about deleting of news:de.comp.sys.amiga.archive
On news:de.admin.news.groups they are discussing at the moment the deleting of the newsgroup de.comp.sys.amiga.archive.

The newsgroup was used for releasing announcements and archive lists of mailboxes and FTP sites, but is for some time now only used for daily upload statistics of the Aminet. The proponent of the process (Simon Paqet) is thinking that this can't be the meaning of a newsgroup that is distributed worldwide via many news servers.

Event: pictures of and report about the Amclust meeting
Michael 'MCP' Göken wrote:
The second Amclust meeting 2001 was again a full success. The Amclust and the AC Osnabrück met last weekend.
On this occasion were many interesting views exchanged regarding the present situation of the Amiga market and its loyal users.

As highlight Thomas Dellert presented his PCI-Board 'GREX'. All were very impressed by the new hardware, only the price is set a little bit too high in many users' opinion.

In addition has our Guido Mersmann introduced his keyboard adapter which offers really many features, for example hardware password protection, multimedia keys, computer on/off, etc.. For this exists a superb software that is also already available on Aminet. On interest email to Geit@gmx.de. Apart from that people had been working for three days with the Amigas. We've taken some snapshots of this event (see title link). (ps) (Translation: wk)

Tao Group

Tao Group: Tao Strengthens Wireless Java
Reading, England, September 27, 2001 -- Tao Group today announces it has acquired additional intellectual property software rights from ASCII Corporation in Japan to further strengthen its 'intent JavaTM Technology Edition' software suite.

The Tao Java product, compliant with industry standards and Sun Microsystems-branded, has been developed over five years and is already being installed into an array of products including digital cameras, phones, pda's, digital televisions, set top boxes, personal computers and web tablets. The various specifications supported by the intent JTE are compact and robust, and run real world content many times faster than any alternative.

Dr. Paddy Byers, Chief Technology Officer of Tao said: "Emphasis on the development of Tao's product has always been on enabling Java technology-based services that the operators and manufacturers must be able to deliver to the consumer to support their economic models. The agreement with ASCII makes our story stronger than ever."

Francis Charig, Tao's Chairman, commented: "This is an excellent acquisition for Tao as we consolidate the technology on the intent media stack for both wireless and wired devices. Our Java product is part of a comprehensive multimedia, language independent solution which is uniquely helping companies take compelling and differentiated products to market both quickly and at low cost."

The conclusion of the ASCII Agreement is the first of several key announcements by Tao in the wireless space over the coming months.

New role-playing game for Classic Amigas in the works
Project Crashsite - that'll be the name of the new role-playing game for Classic Amigas which is currently still under development. The role-playing game in the science fiction genre will require a CD-ROM, 68040 (minimum) and a graphics card.

Here an excerpt from the description:
»Mankind has reached for the stars and colonized a planet system. Far away from Sol, Future II develops into a self-sufficient economy system with own government. Not only has this government plans for Future II but the Sol government also. The third in the trio is McJevl, the space flight company who made the settling and terraforming possible. McJevl has plans too, and gets a big chance to make them reality.
Here enters the player as member of the Future Security Corps, the system-internal police. With a team consisting of up to six characters, law and order must be preserved in Future II. A difficult task which gets even harder as a meteor hits one of the planets and an eye-witness of the event is being murdered before the eyes of the Future Security Corps.
Investigations lead to the fact that this is not the only death ...«

Up-to-date information on the game development are now available at projektcrashsite.de. If you want to get a first impression of what the Classic Amiga is in for you should surf by.

Comments, suggestions and critics are welcome. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Audiosoftware: ProStationAudio compatible with G-Rex PCI bus boards
ProStationAudio is compatible with G-Rex PCI busboards by DCE and Terratec PCI audio boards. Frank Mariak, DCE's software designer of drivers for the G-Rex, confirms that drivers they just made for the 128i and 512i Terratec models have passed preliminary tests for analog I/O with ProStationAudio. Drivers for the 512i are being extended with S/P-DIF support.

G-Rex makers and AudioLabs are actively cooperating to provide the best compatibility between this new PCI busboard and ProStationAudio (a big thank you to Frank for his continued and accurate work).

The G-Rex PCI busboard, available in two models for the A4000 and A1200 is a solution developed specifically for owners of P5/DCE CyberStorm and Blizzard PPC and/or 68K CPU cards. The G-Rex 4000D replaces the stock A4000 backplane, offering slots for PCI and Zorro cards. ProStationAudio takes advantage as well of PCI graphic cards installed on the G-Rex. AmiDog

AmiDog: AMP PPC-Movieplayer V2.04
Mathias "AmiDog" Roslund has made available version 2.04 of his movie player 'AMP' for PPC for download. AMP is a shareware program which can currently play the following multimedia formats:

  • MPEG1/2 video with sound (optional)
  • MP2/MP3 audio streams
  • FLI/FLC
  • AC3 streams
Changes since AMP v2.03:
  • Optimized the AC3 decoder, it's about 50% faster now.
  • Added LORES option that will decode the MPEG at 1/4 of the original size (i.e. half width and half height). This is about twice as fast depending on bitrate and resolution.
  • Fixed some bad init in the MPEGV decoder, should remove the jerky playback at startup.
  • Fixed AC3 sync bug causing it to not work at all. Also, pausing may have caused any kind of strange effects.
  • Made the subtitle decoder handle LORES as well.
  • Fixed the "PPC Alignment Exception" problem.
  • GUI: Replaced Gray with Mode and added options for Gray/Color with/without Lores.

Markus Schmidt: "By this I ask anybody, who might already have been missing his/her entry, to apologize and for a little understanding! Event: No more Amiga-shows in St. Louis
Since 1994 Bob and Diana Scharp have organized a great Amigashow in St. Louis and have spent much of their spare time for it. Now they decided to adopt a child which of course will have supreme priority and which lead to the decision of organizing no more shows. Now please read the complete article:

P.O. Box 672
Bridgeton, MO 63044
http://www.amiga-stl.com
bscharp@icon-stl.net

Fellow Amigans,

Over the years, Amigan-St. Louis, (Bob & Diana Scharp), have brought you many years of Amiga fun and edification. Namely the Amiga shows we hosted in St. Louis, MO. U.S.A. Since early 1994, we have been involved with providing the Amiga community with some of the best Amiga shows ever put on. Eventually we formed our own company, Amigan-St. Louis, to run these shows as they got too big to handle with just volunteers.

We have had many famous people and groups attend, exhibit, and showcase their products at our events. Some notable guests include a few Astronauts - Steve Nagel and Linda Godwin, a singing and dancing group - ANNEX, some celebrities - all of the various Amiga owners, presidents, staff. Notables such as Petro Tyschtschenko, Mitch Stone of Boycott Micro$oft, radio host Jim Singler, plus too many famous Amigans to mention.

We have not only hosted shows, but held banquets that have become famous by themselves. Who would ever forget the reintroduction of Amiga with Gateway, or even better with Bill McEwen. Then there was the ROAST of Petro Tyschtschenko. We celebrated Petro's many years of service to the Amiga community and his retirement the day of the banquet at our show Amiga2001. That will live in our hearts for many years.

Unfortunately, we cannot continue the shows for now. There will be no Amiga 2002© show, sponsored by us. The good news, is the reason why.

Diana and I are adopting a child. Our lives will be even busier than usual this year and next, so we will have to pass the torch, at least for awhile, to others. Although we are not ruling out the possibility of a future show sponsored by us, we just can't possibly do any for now.

We hope you will understand. We hope you will keep the Amiga in your hearts. Hey, we hope to see some of you at other shows and events. Maybe we will be able to bring our newest Amigan with us.

So for now, we bid farewell to the show side of our business, but please consider purchasing some of our latest products from our company.

"Petro ROAST tape"*.................... only $ 15 + $ 5 s&h
"Amiga Antenna balls".................. only $ 3 + $ 1 s&h
"Amiga Coffee Mug (no.2)............... only $ 12 + $ 5 s&h
"Other Bounce-back video tapes......... see web site

* Petro ROAST tape will be available in a few weeks. For other products, see our web page.

Mail your orders to:

Amigan-St. Louis
PO Box 672

Please make checks payable to Amigan-St. Louis, in U.S. funds. Postal Money orders are also accepted. No credit cards or pay pal.

You can also visit our web site for details, at: http://www.amiga-stl.com

As a final note on Amiga shows in the U.S., I understand that Kermit Woodall of Nova Design is putting one together for the east coast. It is supposed to be held the last weekend of March 2002. For information, keep an eye on amiga.org and other news sites.

It has been a great pleasure working with many of you, and showcasing the Amiga and it's capabilities. I wish all of you great success, and we hope to see you all again.

Best Regards,

Bob & Diana Scharp (ps) (Translation: dr)

MySQL Simple Query Tool is an utility that will let you to do queries to a MySQL database with an MUI Gui. MySQT is actually an early alpha version. That means, it has been programmed like some Kro$oft software and will only let you to do "SELECT" queries on small tables. Yes, I have not implemented dynamical memory allocation yet, but this will come. Before starting MySQT don't forget to edit icon tooltypes to fit your database access.

Hello people!

Since there just was advertising for #diehard, I would like to show an alternative:

At irc.openproject.org there is a young channel (#amiga) that is said to be about Ami-OpenSource (AmigaDE). For the time being there isn't much up. Some don't have an Amiga anymore, some are Amiga Inc. employees, some develop similar projects coming from the Amiga world, some are active for the current Amiga scene or are people like you and me.

So, who feels like dropping in is heartily invented.

Eyetech: Information about the AmigaOne
Alan Redhouse, Eyetech, posted some statements about the AmigaOne regarding AmigaOS 4.0 and the boot sequence on the AmigaOne mailing list.

«1. OS4.0 is based on OS3.9 which does need 3.1 ROMs

2. Backwards engineering/testing for OS3.0 compatibility would add weeks onto the already late OS4.0

3. Of course some of this stuff can be put in flashrom/hard disk but this would require a hugh effort in retesting/linking bits of code from various sources adding further to the cost/delay of OS4.0.

4. As I have said several times before on this list the boot sequence for the A1/OS4.0 is:

PPC boots from flash ROM & initialises A1 main board, including any A1 graphics and any available A1 board boot devices (HD, CDROM, SCSI, USB, etc. drivers) PPC loads 68K emulator from flash rom and executes an emulator reset Emulator executes A1200 boot sequence which looks round for boot devices (A1200 HD, FD, PCMCIA & A1 HD, CDROM, SCSI, USB etc) Emulator boots OS4.0 from the highest priority boot device.

5. From OS4.2 the bootstrap loader (& main drivers) will be in the A1 flash ROM and the 68k emulator will only look on the A1 board for boot devices (inc USB floppies, CDROM's etc etc)

Hope this helps

Alan" - Eyetech» (sd) (Translation: mj)

Music: ProStationAudio Millenium
September 2001: ProStationAudio Millenium, T8 and Remix compatible with SoundBlaster PCI boards.
ProStationAudio is successfully working with Creative's SoundBlaster PCI boards installed on Mediator busboards, under AmigaOS.

The software has just passed tests at an audio production facility, under daily working conditions. The test setup includes a Mediator PCI busboard, SoundBlaster 128 PCI, and VooDoo graphic card for displaying the ultra-hi-res PSA GUI.

Mediator 1200 PCI busboard

Audio hardware is accessed via AHI, drivers for additional Creative's models are due soon (SoundBlaster Live! to start with) by the busboard makers.

Elbox, makers of Mediator, confirm also that the PCI busboard supports installing two PCI graphic cards. ProStationAudio can take advantage of two display cards (and two monitors) for increased productivity. This feature, already supported for Zorro graphic cards, is now available also for PCI boards.

ProStationAudio is the reference audio editing/mastering software for AmigaOS. With this new developemnt on PCI hardware the range of supported hardware now includes:
  • Draco
  • Amiga with one or two CPU, up to two graphic cards, two monitors and any AHI-compatible audio card or stock audio chip. Graphic and audio cards can be on Zorro or PCI busses.
ProStationAudio supports also non-AHI pro cards such as the SoundStagePro DSP and provides direct access to NewTek Flyer, Sunrize Studio16 and Digidesign SD audio files, beside standard Amiga, Apple, Windows and Unix audio files includig MP3.

Informations on other PCI busboard options, such as the G-Rex specific for PPC accelerators owners, will be published as soon as audio drivers will be released by hardware makers. ProStationAudio is fully hardware independent and will work with any audio board, PCI or Zorro, provided AHI drivers are available from hardware vendors. (ps) (Translation: rh)

CD32 Games Install Kit v4.5 released
The CD32 Games Install Kit v4.5 was just released on the Airsoft Softwair homepage (title link). This is the first public version of the program since version 3.9. Until now, versions 4.0 to 4.5 were only available for owners of the The Best Of Airsoft Softwair Gold Edition but now the InstallKit is available as Shareware again. The demo version can be downloaded from the Airsoft Softwair homepage.

Since version 3.9 many things have been changed:
For example there is now a MUI GUI, the stability of Install2001 was increased and much more games are supported now, for example Simon the Sorcerer with talkie soundtrack. Also the integrated emulator which runs games straight from the CD was greatly improved. Additionally the InstallKit can now be ordered by credit card through RegNet. And finally there is now an own section on the Airsoft Softwair homepage which covers information about the program (in the products section). (ps) (Translation: rh)

I have made some investigation on the web and found an interesting German article by 'Spiegel online' which you can read at the title link. The flight number Q33NY is wrong, and it is no hidden message but black demagogy. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Discussion forums
19. Sept. 2001: with the beginning of this week we created two discussion forums at Yahoogroups. First you have to register at Yahoogroups (groups.yahoo.com or groups.yahoo.de) and than subscribe to the group. The subscribing is only possible via groups.yahoo.com (just enter there amigaxl or amithlon in the search field) because the national access doesn't know these groups. A real stupid error of Yahoogroups. Important hint: we recommend to discuss all questions in the group amigaxl as most of the people certainly can't know which emulator they'll use. More comprehensive instructions will follow tomorrow.

The dealing with the questions runs at full speed.
19. Sept. 2001: We are right now dealing with the countless questions that were asked. Using these we'll create further texts regarding the products Amithlon/AmigaXL to make the advantages and limitations more apparent. Please give us 1-2 days time for this ;-)

WinUAE Homepage (ANF)

Emulator: WinUAE 0.8.17 release 1
Since yesterday is in download area of the WinUAE homepage the WinUAE 0.8.17 release 1 available.

Changes made in version WinUAE 0.8.17 release 1:
  • FIXED: Various AGA and chipset-related fixes. (Bernd#1, Toni Wilen)
  • FIXED: .GZ support in floppy dialog doesn't cause corruption. (Timothy)
  • FIXED: Updated sprite-collision logic which fixes Leander, Archon 1 and 2, Menace, etc. (Toni)
  • FIXED: Updated disk-emulation code, for higher compatability. Also now supports .fdi and high-density .adf images. (Toni, Adil Temel)
  • FIXED: 60Hz support in Dynablaster and BC Kid (Toni Wilen)
  • FIXED: BSD-Socket emulation is mostly working, although bugs still exist. (Bernd#3)
  • FIXED: Picasso96 screens smaller than their display-mode would have crap in their left-hand-border if you grabbed the screen's title-bar and moved the screen to the right.
  • FIXED: Updated copy of rtg.library, including more patches. (Bernd#3)
  • FIXED: You can set the WinUAE resolution in full-screen to whatever you desire. Especially useful so that you set your full-screen size to match your desktop size, and it will prevent all your desktop icons from moving around after exitting WinUAE. (me, Georg)
  • FIXED: Stupid sound_channels=0 stuff in config-files works properly.
  • FIXED: Stupid gfx_center_xxx=yes/no stuff in config-files works properly.
  • FIXED: Selecting an item in the Hard Drives page of the GUI and then moving its position in the list now leaves the item highlighted.
  • FIXED: Detect OS version early, and inform the user appropriately instead of crashing. Windows NT is no longer a supported OS for WinUAE.
  • FIXED: Various little off-by-one pixel errors in the GUI.
  • FIXED: MIDI in/out lists in the Ports page of GUI were behaving strangely.
  • FIXED: Floppy-disc emulation change to allow Shadow of the Beast Trainer to work. (Toni Wilen)
  • FIXED: Small change in MIDI support so that closing MIDI and then reopening it will work properly. (Bernd Roesch)
  • FIXED: Call ahi_install in main.c. No Amiga-side AHI driver yet.
  • FIXED: MIDI-input doesn't have the concept of a "default device", unlike MIDI-output. Changed the GUI and programming accordingly.
  • FIXED: MIDI-output now does the right things with the serial-port after each written byte, which allows some other programs to finally work (MusicX, Deluxe Music, etc.)
  • ADDED: New hook function in uaelib for checking on removable drive state.
  • ADDED: Disk-change status is now tracked via WM_DEVICECHANGE notifications which allows "run >nil: uaediskchange cd0:" in the startup-sequence to work properly. Eject a CD-ROM, and the Amiga knows about it. Insert a new CD-ROM, and the Amiga knows about it. Woo-hoo! NOTE: Probably really buggy.
  • ADDED: New collision-modes, fast-copper mode (not save-able with config).
  • ADDED: State-save support. (Toni Wilen)
  • ADDED: Option in Sound page of GUI to enable/disable synchronized sound.
  • ADDED: Printing of DDCAPS info for display-driver, to help diagnostics.
  • ADDED: FDI disk-image support (Toni Wilen)
  • CHANGED: Tweaked the sound-code yet again, hopefully will get less out of sync. (Jose Gil, myself)
  • CHANGED: Add PC Drives no longer adds the floppy-drives. If you want access to A:, then you'll have to add it manually in the GUI.
  • CHANGED: Added ability to allocate larger amount of ZorroIII memory. (Bernd#3)
  • CHANGED: Added ability to allocate larger amount of RTG (Picasso96) memory. (Bernd#3)
  • CHANGED: Removed Vertical Blank Synchronization (VSync) support in Flip calls. This should increase synchronization and performance in full-screen mode, but may introduce some tearing/artifacting.
  • CHANGED: Use the system "hand" cursor when pointing at web-links in the About page (if available). (Oscar Sillani)
  • CHANGED: Use Tahoma font in About page of GUI.
  • CHANGED: Use up/down icons in the HardDisk page of GUI. (Oscar Sillani)

Strategy game: Knights and Merchants (Mac) shipping
Realtime strategic economy simulation Knights and Merchants is now shipping for the Mac. Knights and Merchants recreates the era of the Middle Ages. The player takes on the role of an ordinary captain in the king's Palace guard who finds himself responsible for the defense of the last loyal province. You, the player, must win back all those provinces which once belonged to your king. You have to manufacture different products, making use of numerous buildings and producer goods of the Middle Ages period. One result of your productive labor is the manufacturing of weapons and armor. But your success or failure depends mainly on the structure and organization of your economy. An efficient organization increases production, while a badly organized structure will cause non-stop delays.

Features:
  • about 25 different types of buildings , including horse stables, farms and schools
  • over a dozen different types of characters such as serfs, miners or winemakers
  • 10 different types of military units including archers, Knights and pikemen
  • realistic landscape display using complex Gouraud Shading techniques
  • production processes portrayed in detailed animation (watch your horses grow)
  • rendered cutscenes
  • german localisation
  • onscreen hints and tutorial mode provide easy guidance to get started
  • multiplayer Mode for upto 6 players in LAN
  • 20 singleplayer missions
  • 10 multiplayer maps
Knights and Merchants comes in fully localised english, french, german and spanish versions. The distribution in Germany is done by the company Arktis. More Information about Knights and Merchants can be found in the project area on our pages (title link) or under http://www.knightsandmerchants.de. (ps)

Virus Help Denmark: xfdmaster.library Version 39.13
Dirk Stöcker updated his xfdmaster.library which is very important, since almost any antivirus software requires it for unpacking and archiving before and after virus tests. Here are the details:

Name: xfdmaster.library v39.13
Archive name: xfdmaster.lha
Archive size: 163.510 Bytes
Release date: 17. September 2001
Programmer: Dirk Stöcker

Xfdmaster.library info:
The XFD system is for single file decrunching. It can be compared to XAD system, which is for file extraction from archives! They do different work, but are used together often.

This software package allows you to decrunch almost every packed file known on the Amiga. It consists of the xfdmaster.library as the brain and a couple of programs that offer certain functions to the user.

The xfdmaster.library is a standard Amiga shared, runtime library. It works with Kickstart V33+ and offers applications the possibility to directly support any crunched files.

Other than the predecessor decrunch.library, the xfdmaster.library has a more flexible interface, offers the possibility to decrunch already loaded program segments, supports external decrunchers, is able to unlink 4EB9/4EF9- and text-linked files and can scan for crunched data in any memory area.

There is a new project at sourceforge (follow the title link). This project has the following description: "Build One Program - Run It Everywhere". I think that I know this concept. Slashdot called it an alternartive for Java.

It will be a hard struggle for Amiga if this becomes a common thing. It is released under the GPL and supports OpenGL, Java and much more. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Game: Genetic Species for Gameboy Advance
Some time ago Milan Pollé started a petition to learn how much are interested in a Gameboy Advance port of the Amiga ego-shooter 'Genetic Species'.

Many interested people vote for such a port (http://www.dreamcast.ca/gameboyland/gs/gs.htm) and there where even more Amiga users for such port than people from the 'IGN Gameboy Advance'-Forum.

Now Milan Pollé received an e-mail from 'Marble-Eyes' anouncing the porting in cooperation with the Danish games developers 'Entale'. Those introduced the game to publishers on the ECTS 2001 by screenshots and tests:

«Hi,

Marble-Eyes has recently started cooperation with Danish game developer Entale on porting GS to Game Boy Advance. Armed with sales documents, screenshots and rave reviews, Entale representatives have attended the ECTS 2001 show in London to meet publishers and show them the potential of GS.

We are all very excited and looking forward to a possible revival of GS on the GBA console. GS and Amiga lovers out there, thank you for the great support!

For future news on the progress of GS Advance, please visit www.entale.com.

For any questions or encouraging words, feel free to write Entale at geneticspecies@entale.com

Card reader/writer news
Carsten Siegner wrote:
Today, slightly delayed, I have now tested my card reader/writer with Sony memory sticks. These run as expected very good and I can access them like a hard disk.

Some users say that the device would be too expensive. These users have to consider that they'll own a universal key for all mobile digital devices. These are among others digital video cams (especially those of Sony), digital photo cameras (all cameras with card slot) and MP3 players (with card slot). Additionally, I can imagine that in conjunction with IBM microdrives these drives may be used for data exchange between laptops and Amiga. (Because of a lack of money I wasn't able to test this yet).

A user asked whether compact flash cards would work, too. This can be answered clearly with "YES".

Boot ability of memory cards:
Not tested yet but theoretically possible as I use mount lists to access the memory cards. A RDB block cannot be written on the cards as they have always to be formatted in photo cameras or MP3 players. This is absolutely necessary because of compatibility reasons though you may probably be able to format these memory cards with an Amiga file system, too.

H&P: AmigaOS XL for x86
Under the title link you can find the promised details regarding AmigaOS XL, two new Amiga emulators for x86 computers that are offered in a double pack. Here's an exerpt:

AMIthlon - The fastest Amiga ever

Insert the CD-ROM, switch on your PC and boot into the fastest Amiga ever. There is no complicated and boring installation. The development team of Harald Frank (VMC) and Bernd Meyer even implemented native support for nVidia and Matrox graphics cards providing maximum graphics performance. Opening windows on the Workbench is so fast that you can barely watch it anymore.

With AMIthlon you can even use your old Amiga hard-disk in your PC. Simply connect it to your PC, start AMIthlon and that's it.

AmigaXL for QNX - The most functional Amiga ever

The host operating system for AmigaXL is QNX 6.1. It is included in the package. QNX has many similarities with the AmigaOS. It has a micro kernel and the drivers are separate processes. Like devices and handlers in AmigaOS these can be dynamically started and stopped. This makes the system extremely light weight and resource efficient.

Features that QNX provides can directly be used within the emulated Amiga. This includes network functionality and multimedia features. QNX applications like the web browser Opera® can be started directly from the AmigaOS screen. One can say both operating systems work together seamlessly.

System requirements:

Athlon-, Duron, Pentium-, Celeron-CPU with 500 MHz or more. AmigaOS XL supports usual graphic, sound and network cards. A complete list is available on our homepage amigaxl.haage-partner.de or www.amithlon.com.

Availability: The delivery will start about 41st week. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Stock exchange software: Bonds V1.83 available (update)
The version 1.83 of the stock exchange software Bonds is available. Some smaller bugs have been removed. Major improvement of the package is that there exists finally an installer script. The NewInstaller by AirsoftSoftware is used to get an appropriate scale. The tool "KursUpdater" is from now on not needed anymore as Bonds now contains the shell option "JUSTUPDATE", and therefore makes the updater needless.

Update 15.09.2001:
Sven Dröge wrote:

Elbox: SB Power in Mediator
ELBOX COMPUTER - Krakow, 13 September 2001

SB POWER IN MEDIATOR

Elbox Computer hereby announces availability of the software update for the Sound Blaster PCI128 sound card for all the users of MEDIATOR PCI busboards, who have registered as users of the Mediator Multimedia CD package.

This update expands the list of supported operation modes of the AHI drivers with the '++' modes and introduces support for the Sub_Update AHI function used by tools software for edition of music.

The Sound Blaster PCI128 card working in the DMA mode loads the Amiga processor when playing back uncompressed music files much less than any other sound card connected through Zorro II or the clock port. This feature, combined with high playback quality and flexibility of configuration resulting from the number of mixed inputs/outputs makes Sound Blaster PCI128 the best sound card offered at any time for Amiga computers.

Cyborg's Instant Messenger in version 1.03_10 now supports PGP encryption so that a communication cannot be read by others without huge efforts. A recognition of the transmission by the system administrator is still ensured. No hidden message is sent, it thus can hardly be considered a hacker method. The preferences window can now be enlarged and the problems with some installations are fixed. As far as I can see now also Amiga users can use mobile MP3 players with the Amiga (the Amiga can write to the cards!). This magic device is called "ICS-47-BH" and is to be a CFA, SM, PC card reader with a SCSI-II interface.

The cards are accessed using a mountlist, as like with harddisks, at the speed of 4MByt/sec (read and write). I will create a website with more detailed information including pictures.

CCC argues against attacks against communication systems

CCC argues against attacks against communication systems

- International understanding more important than ever before

As a reaction on the unbelievable murder attacks in the USA there is an appeal circulating in the hacker scene to destroy websites and other communication systems in Islamic countries or organisations available in the Internet.

The Chaos Computer Club arguments against this appeal and asks to ignore this or similar appeals. As a galactic association it is unimaginable for us to split the world in good and bad now and to take religion as the measure of all measures for such separation.

These incidences are hard to operate in the global village for every human on this planet. But as hackers we should try the world processing at issue now to handle in the sense of human race. "We helplessly face the power of destruction. But we believe in the power of communication, which eventually always turned out to be positive and more powerful than hate", said Jens Ohlig, speaker of the CCC.

"Electronic communication structures like the Internet right now can make an important contribution to international communication. In this understandingly tense situation it may not happen that communication lines get broken giving more foundation for the lack of understanding.", summarized Any Müller-Maguhn, speaker of the CCC.

The Chaos Computer Club, this time celebrating it's 20th anniversary, according to it's statue pleads for freedom of information and a human right of at least world wide untrammelled communication.

Already in 1999 the CCC together with a coalition of popular hacker groups (Cult of the Dead Cow, 2600, L0pht, Phrack, Pulhas, Toxyn, !Hispahack, and members of the Dutch hacker community) argued against the utilization of networks as an electronic battlefield: "Don't participate in warlike action in the so called 'cyber war'. Keep the networks alive, which are for communication. These are the nervous system of human progress."

SmartBoy with AmigaOS isn
Earlier this year announced the company Thendic GmbH the SmartBoy, a new handheld terminal that should be equipped with AmigaDE. Since then nothing had happened and the company was silent. Today I got (finally) the answer from Horst Hug, who's working for Thendic, via email in which he wrote about the SmartBoy as follows:

  • The SmartBoy is indeed in development.
  • Pictures of the device can be accessed from the company's website (title link) under "Entwickler".
  • In the B2B version (Business-to-Business) the SmartBoy will be equipped with Windows CE 3.0.
  • In the B2C version (Business-to-Consumer) the SmartBoy may be equipped with the AmigaDE, at the moment we are testing the available software, at the end of the year a decision will be made.

Due to these events we also cancelled the planned announcement of AmigaOS  XL. We will do this the next days. Thanks for your understanding.

Amiga makes statement about events in New York, U.S.A.
Today is indeed a difficult day for America and for the world.

We at Amiga lift up in prayer the families of those who were killed and injured in the attacks today.

It is truly a sad day for all of us, and our thoughts and prayers go out to our nation's leaders, as they must now deal with this situation.

God Bless us, and may we be ever mindful of our blessings.

AUG99 show their solidarity with the USA
We are shocked by the new terror wave in the USA, where thousands of innocent people had to die. We like to show our solidarity and at the same time strongly condemn this kind of force. Because of this our homepage won't be accessible for one day. We ask for your understanding.
