Search engine: Google violation of security
When Google started to indicate documents like PDF, RTF or Word-files and made them visible at google.com, many webmasters had to think about the fact that they probably did not configure there servers the right way. But now there are some hints that, at least in some cases, this was maybe wrong.
The company Klaus Schallhorn Omnisearch proved that Google indicates so-called secure servers (ssl), too. Although they say that they do not. Meanwhile there are more then 3.8 million secure sites indicated by Google.
Even worse: Google announced that they are fully compliant to the robots.txt-standard but they definitly do not when indicating secure servers. The Google-spiders have already executed over 161,000 cgi-programs one or more times.
If you check the search results of corresponding requests you can find servers that forbid via the robots.txt access to the cgi-bin directory even under the top 10 results.
Webmaster have to take new measures to protect their sites from being indicated by spiders.
Further information is available at the title link (German).

On the homepage of StrICQ the third beta version of the ICQ client V2 is
released.
Download: STRICQv2.lha
Please read the important installation hints.
Changes since last release:
- Fixed a major error that involved a race condition in the IPC. A receiving task could actually check for data on the message port before that data actually arrived. The IPC now blocks until the message does arrive.
- Fixed an error in that some messages would actually not be NULL terminated.
- Now requests offline messages. If there are any, they won't be displayed! Hehehe...
- I still need enforcer/cyberguard hits!!

Event: Amiga Expo - Extreme Computing Annouce Amiga X1200
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Extreme Computing Announce Amiga X1200
Amiga Expo and Extreme Computing are pleased to bring you the following press release. Please make plans now to visit Amiga Expo on March 29th-31st at the Marriott Hunt Valley Inn in Maryland where you will see all the latest developments including those from our friends at Extreme Computing!
Extreme Computing (a branch of Extreme Corporation) began reseach and development of new Amiga-based products in the Spring of 1999. With the announcement of the Amiga x86 solution in the Summer of 2001, we began working overtime to come up with new designs of x86-based hardware that would be powerful, functional, compelling, upgradable, and above all else - Amiga and AmigaDE compliant!
The results have far exceeded our expectations. Our new line of x86 based Amiga hardware will ultimately usher in new levels in design and performance for the Amiga consumer computing experience. The main goal was to give the consumers back a true Amiga system. One where you can take it right out of the box and boot up to an Amiga screen without any hassles or unnecessary complexity.
One of our guiding concepts was to combine classic designs with modern technology - thus bringing you the Amiga X1200 computer system. This system offers the design and compactness of the original Commodore Amiga A1200, but with all new, and blazingly fast, hardware under the hood. The Amiga X1200 is the ideal replacement, or addition, to your Amiga computing needs.
The Amiga X1200 isn't the only exciting new hardware we have coming. Extreme Corporation will have several MORE innovative and powerful Amiga solutions on display at their booth at Amiga Expo. All of these designs are will be shipping with Amiga OS x86(3.9) pre-installed and will come with a full copy of Nova Design, Inc.'s ImageFX 3.2 on CDROM. As a special show bonus, all orders placed at Amiga Expo will also come with FREE SHIPPING.
Extreme Corporation (Formerly Amitech Electronics) was founded by Amiga Enthusiasts to assist in providing Amiga Owners with useful tools and information for an ever growing computing experience.
Nova Design, Inc. are the creators of Aladdin 4D and ImageFX - the Amiga's most consistently top-rated image editing and special effects package and are the hosts of Amiga Expo. See us all at the show!
For more information on other exhibits and information about Amiga Expo visit our web site at www.amigaexpo.com and sign up today! Don't forget to get your hotel rooms and banquet tickets! You can order everything online or by toll free number as shown on the web site.

Virus Help Denmark: VirusZ III v0.97
Georg Hoermann has made an update of VirusZ III, and the bugfixed update
is now available for download at our homepage.
Here is some info about the update:
Name: VirusZ III v0.97
Archive name : VirusZ.lha
Archive size : 50.208
Date : 2 March 2002
Programmer : Georg Hoermann
Requires : OS 2.04+, xvs.library
News in VirusZ III v0.97:
- Fixed bugs in window calculation code that caused the resizeable
windows (Vector Check, File Check) to look ugly or to not open up
at all. Thanks to Crown/Cryptoburners, DMX, Paracels/Placebo,
Jan Andersen and Mad Roger for the bug reports...
- Moved size-gadget in resizeable windows from the right border to
the bottom border (looks much nicer and takes less space on small
screens) and re-fixed width of these windows.
- Re-added support for ALL disk-based devices to Bootblock Lab on
special request from Mikolaj Calusinski. Are you happy now? :-)
- Added disassembler mode to the Bootblock Lab. This should help
experienced users/programmers to analyse unknown bootblocks.
Note: This feature requires 'disassembler.library' v40.x by
Thomas Richter, you'll find it in Aminet...
- Made Bootblock Lab window resizeable as the disassembler output
becomes quite big sometimes.
- Changed the file format for saving window positions. Sorry, but
if you already had arranged your windows individually, you will
have to position them all again and save the prefs afterwards.
- Started adding Sector Check (at least the device selector, the
real check is not implemented yet, sorry for that :-(
- Added recognition for mmu.library patches to Vector Check and
fixed some smaller problems.
- Finally wrote at least a short documentation for VirusZ III.
STILL TO DO LIST (no specific order):
- Optimize File Check (output is much too slow, checking archives
cannot be canceled at the moment).
- Add a fully working Sector Check.
- Add new features to Vector Check (eg. a brain for known ROMTags,
a snapshot function for unknown patches [you can send me those
snapshots and I add them to the brain]).
- Add disassembler mode to Memory Monitor.
- Add useful commands to ARexx port.

Amiforce: Amiblitz section and new forum
As promised life has been breathed into the Amiblitz section on Amiforce.
From now on is the manual for Blitz2 in German available as HTML version for
online reading or ready for download as offline variant.
Furthermore has a new forum been installed. There's a poll in the Amiblitz area
regarding this topic. The forum can be used as a place to go for Amiblitz
programmers and for people who want to become programmers.
Further planned contents of the section:
- Complete users and reference manual in German.
- Tutorials and courses.
- An own distribution.
- Example source codes and much more.
This will take some time. So it's clear that not all can appear at once. The
main goal of Amiforce is to make Amiblitz more popular again. With the release
of the documentation should also beginners succeed in learning this language. The
first step is made. All interested are kindly invited.

Online Freeciv competition among Amiga users
On Sunday, 03.03.2002, takes an online Freeciv competition among Amiga users
place, beginning 14.00h. People who want to participate should be
on the channel #amigafun on the server ie.altnet.org from 13.30h on because of
planning reasons.
Required is much time as a game can take several hours and besides that one
hould already know the game a little (or the old Civilisation game) as it is
right complex.
The played version is 1.11.x as the 1.12.x for Amiga has too many bugs.
Downloadlinks:

PC: ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/packages/windows/old/freeciv-1.11.4-win.zip

First News about Papyrus Office (Update)
Click on the title of this article to reach the website of Papyrus Office, which is being ported to MorphOS and Amiga PPC.
It is a new office suite that fully supports PPC processors. It features word processing with desktop publishing capabilities, import/export of Word documents, and spreadsheet calculations with Dbase export, databanks included.
Supplement:
We inquired with Michael Garlich about an Amiga version. It looks like there is no version planned for 68k, however a version may be made for Amiga OS 4.0 if the required infrmation and specifications are provided by Amiga Inc. Right now the Macintosh version is available, and the MorphOS version is underway, with a demo planned for May, 2002. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Volker Grabbe
The lack of commercial software and the resulting gaps have been bridged well with
freeware and shareware programs just for the applications section during recent
years. But most Amiga users are missing an up-to-date browser and an office package
which truely allows to exchange data with other platforms.
Especially for "text processing" the Amiga is not up-to-date, any more. The Amiga Arena
talked to Volker Grabbe, who established the "OpenOffice" project and set himself the
target to put an end to this nuisance with the open source variant of Sun's "StarOffice 6".
This interview is available in
English, too.
Because Volker Grabbe cannot implement such project on his own, he raised a little
team and still relies on help from the Amiga community. Everybody wanting to participate
in this project, please contact
Volker Grabbe for more information.
Olaf Köbnik: "Dear Amiga users, it would be nice if numerous developers would come to
work on this project. The way users are fighting each other is incomprehensible to me. We all
benefit from such projects and should account ourselves happy for still having enthusiasts in the
Amiga section, who "sacrify" their spare time for us and the Amiga. Deliberately I did not mention
any comparable product here, because this message mainly intends to call attention for OpenOffice!" (ps) (Translation: mj)

peer2peer Morpheus changing protocoll
The peer2peer file sharing system ´Morpheus´ is changing the file sharing protocoll.
Since the start of Morpheus the FastTrackSystem was used, which had some security gaps. After the
change Morpheus users could not log into the system, because the existing software was not
compatible with the Morpheus client any more. Morpheus now is about to use the Gnutella protocoll.
If MusicCity will allow other Gnutella clients, there would be a better chance again for the Amiga to get MP3s and
video files, than it is currently possible with Amster (with the navigator).
There already is an unfinished Gnutella client called AmiGnut for the Amiga on Aminet. Sources are available in
StormC format.

Remedy Systems supporting AMIGA - AmiDynDNS Version 0.9
Costel Mincea is happy to announce that the Remedy Systems OHG will support the
Amiga from now on. Remedy Systems is a quite young software and web design company and
decided to develope software for the Amiga, too.
First there will be little but useful tools released. The DynDNS client
´AmiDynDNS´ was the first one and is available in version 0.9 at the download
section. More sophisticated applications are scheduled.
DynDNS Client AmiDynDNS v0.9
AmiDynDNS is a command line based client or the DynDNS.org service. The new version fixes
some bugs and implements many new functions.
- Complete DynDNS support (DynDNS, StatDNS, CustomDNS, and
all options).
- SMC barricade router support (IP directly from DSL router).
- New config file format (optional), to take all the new options.
- Local IP addresses are scanned now.
- Current hosts will not be updated again (prevents hosts from being locked by DynDNS).
Of course AmiDynDNS still offers the "old" functions like optional web based IP recognition or
the optional log file. More information can be found under the title link or from the AmigaGuide
coming with the archive.
Costel Mincea: "For the rest I would like to apologize to those, who wanted to use v0.82 and had
to take some crashes due to my inattention. Sorry!"

Coyote Flux Presents - AuroraRadio
Coyote Flux is proud to announce "AuroraRadio", one of the first internet
radio stations to broadcast Amiga Game and Demo modules in between its
normal programming. On request a SID tune hour will be integrated in the
evenings.
What sets AuroraRadio apart from ordinary radio station is that its aimed
at a musical perspective, this means that infantile commercial efforts
such as Britney Spears, Limp Bizkit and Eminem will not be broadcasted.
Music with more or less modest attitude and at creativity's beauty. Not
aimed at 1 genre but for those who agree each genre whether it's classical
music, rock, jazz or house or whatever other can be beautiful when well
done. Think in the direction of Ken Ishii, Massive Attack, Studio K7
Dj's, Bjork, Future Sound Of London, Beanfield, The Beatles, Richie
Hawtin, Tricky, Tori Amos, The Doors, Vangelis, Sade, The Orb, Sneaker
Pimps, Oasis, Sun Electric, Everything But The Girl, Squarepusher and
Amiga/c64 artists such as Muffler, CNCD, Matt Gray, Martin Walker etc.
The offer is very varied and covers every timeframe in musical history
and mat not suit the genre aimed taste of the mainstreamer. The website
will be online in 3 weeks, but before that it's best to search for
"auroraradio" on the shoutcast website.
Kind Regards,
Coyote Flux

Audio: Overclocking Delfina Lite with DelfTweak
If you are seeking for more processing power for your Delfina Lite sound card and you are not confident of ripping some of the components off the board and replacing them with others, DelfTweak offers you an excellent alternative: it can overclock Delfina by software means and gain more than enough processing power to encode and listen to MP3 files.
Some features:
- capable of changing Delfina Lite's internal clock speed
- displays external and internal clock frequences and DSP frequency ratio
- supports any external clock (crystal) frequence in addition to standard 4 MHz external clock
- available frequency range with standard Delfina Lite: 4 MHz - 16.4 GHz!

Statement by Alan Redhouse about AmigaOne
Alan Redhouse wrote a detailed report about the upcoming AmigaOne for the AmigaOne mailinglist. This text can be found at the titlelink.
These are the main points:
- There will be detailed information published at the homepage of Amiga Inc. as well as off Eyetech this week.
- The AmigaOne was developed in Asia on behalf of Eyetech.
- The motherboard contains a Openfirmware compatible BIOS. TurboLinux is currently running on it.
- The production will be started as soon as the betatests of OS4 are successfull. The board will then be available six weeks later.
- The price for the entry-model will be: 350 UKP / 600 Euro (without tax and shipping.)
Update: (26.07.2014, cg)
A complete copy of Alan Redhouse's mail (added since the Original has been moved elsewhere by Yahoogroups apparently):

First of all thanks to everyone on this list for their patience. We have
been working very hard to get something demonstrably working rather than
just announcing more promises. Ideally on Friday we would have announced
that the A1 was going to be at the show, but at that point the board was
locked up in British customs. We didnt pick it up from UPS's Durham depot
(120 miles from the show) until 7:30 saturday morning and had no idea
whether it had survived the journey from the other side of the world until
we configured it at the show and switched it on.
Secondly, Fleecy and I were plannning to sit down and make sure that we
issued a jointly acceptable, coordinated, news release on the A1. But he got
snowed in in Cumbria, so we cant now do that until later in the week. Expect
a major web site update on both our and Amiga's sites next Monday.
But in the meantime I'm going to repeat here some of the things I said at
Alt-Woa as some of the 'authoritative' postings on this list (& ann) have
been off in the realms of fantasy and bear little if any relationship to
what I actually said.
But first a bit of of background.
Yes I do read this list and try to filter out and take note of what is said
(apart of course from the rude postings). The main feedback that has come
out over the last year can, I think, be summarised as follows:
CPU speed concerns
Memory speed concerns
Provision of legacy peripherals (FDD/Serial/Parallel/kb/mouse)
Provision of integrated peripherals
AGP speed
Will it run Linux?
But I dont have/want/will never buy an A1200
Will it fit in in an EZTower mk1-5/RBM/xyz tower?
It costs too much (interesting this one as the price has never been
announced)
and, of course
Where is it?
In October 2000 when we laid out the design for the A1, there was no
commercially available 'northbridge' chip (the interface between the CPU,
memory and PCI bus) at the relatively small quantities that we needed at an
economic price. 'Southbridge' chips were available (these handle the system
timing, interrupts etc and, traditionally also embed the lower speed
peripheral functions such as IDE, USB etc), but clearly these do not come
with a built in A1200-PCI bridge - which would have to be built in custom
logic. It therefore made economic sense to build a custom southbridge chip -
but without the integrated peripherals (these were available on separate
chips at low cost anyway) which incorporated the A1200-PCI bridge. Things
were going nicely until May/June . . . . and you know the rest, or most of
it anyway.
By the time OS4 development had been signed off in early November the world
had moved on. Commercially available PPC northbridge chips were available,
and coupled with off-the-shelf southbridge chips, were able to deliver
better price performance than the original A1 custom chip design, and (since
the big boys had already been using them successfully) without the risk of
bugs intrinsically present in any custom logic implementation. This meant
that the only custom logic function needed was the PCI to A1200 bridge.
Alongside this many people had expressed a wish only to have a stand-alone
A1 board, without the need (or ability) to run hardware-hitting
applications. In addition Hyperion have been making better than expected
progress in decoupling the chipset dependancies in the OS with a result that
it will cease to be reliant on the Amiga chipset quite soon now. (Of course
hardware hitting applications will still to a greater or lesser degree need
access to a genuine Amiga chipset). Given this, we thought it would be
sensible to try to provide Amiga chipset availability as an a option, so
that the main A1 board would not have to carry the cost of providing this
connection - in terms of PCB and component real-estate and in requiring a
custom tower to mount it in. The upshot is that Escena has come up with a
solution which allows the bridge to the A1200 chipset to be made from a PCI
card, via ribbon cable, to the A1200 edge connector. The use of a ribbon
cable also solves the 'will it work in an xyz tower' problem, as there is
(within limits) quite a wide range of A1 & A1200 relative board positioning
that can be used. Theis A1200 bridge will be an additional cost item for
those who need it.
So with Escena concentrating their efforts on the bridge card, and us
deciding to use off-the-shelf north and south bridge parts for the main
board it made sense to subcontract the design and manufacture to experts in
this field, who, surprise, surprise, are far east based (hence the problem
with customs on Friday). The board (currently) runs an open
firmware-compatible bios and runs PPC linux (which is how we know that the
hardware works properly before OS4.0 is released).
In terms of timeframes the board is now ready to go into production, with a
lead time of 4-6 weeks. However we will not press the button until we can be
sure that OS4 will be ready to run on the board in the same timeframe. OS4
is scheduled to go into beta during March, and we will make A1 boards
available to help with this process. When we get the thumbs up from Hyperion
we will start production and they will be with your local dealer around 6
weeks later.
In terms of specification the entry level board will run a 600MHz G3 CPU and
will come with this soldered in place, thereby keeping the costs as low as
possible. After the first production run we will be producing boards -
obviously at a higher cost - with a cpu carrier so that cpu's can easily be
interchanged to suit your speed and pocket requirements. As G4's fall in
price we may also offer a soldered in place G4 cpu option as well. What
happens if you buy an entry level board and want to upgrade it in a year or
so's time? Well exactly the same as when you bought a similarly priced
accelerator a couple of years back and want to upgrade to a faster one. You
either sell it privately or trade it in to the dealer where you purchased
it. In fact in the PC market, depite all processors being socketed, hardly
anyone ever changes the cpu to improve the computer - they nearly always
have to buy a (at least) a new motherboard as well. We're just being upfront
about it!
So lets revisit that feedback list again:
CPU speed concerns -- G3/G4 to their current clocking limits
Memory speed concerns -- 133MHz FSB (DDR doesn't help PPC's I am told)
Provision of legacy peripherals (FDD/Serial/Parallel/kb/mouse) - On board
Provision of integrated peripherals - 2xUSB (motherboard) + 2 more on
headers; LAN; AC97; MC97; UDMA100
AGP speed - 2x (although this is still a red herring in my view)
Will it run Linux? - Yes
But I dont have/want/will never buy an A1200 - Fine by me
Will it fit in in an EZTower mk1-5/RBM/xyz tower? - Yes (subject to xyz
definition - not sure about wooden towers)
It costs too much (interesting this one as the price has never been
announced) - A1 including 600MHz G3 cpu at current component prices and
exchange rates GBP 350/USD500/Euro 600 excluding local taxes and shipping.
And before anyone (who probably has no notion of real manufacturing and
development costs) pipes up that they can buy a xzzz PC motherboard for
$2.49 from Walmart remember this is for a board being manufactured in the
(very?) low thousands, not by the million. (And don't forget that a 240MHz
603 ppc blizzard with 060 cost around ukp550 ex tax when they were last
available - those were the days ;-) )
Where is it? - In my office running Turbo Linux at the moment. In your
dealer as soon as OS4 is ready.
More on the website next week
Thanks for your patience

AmigaOS: PPC native version of Picasso96 for AmigaOS 4.x
Ben Hermans from Hyperion Entertainment confirms in the following quotation
that a PPC native version of Picasso96, the graphic driver system of
AmigaOS 4.0, will be part of AmigaOS 4.x.
«Ben Hermans: "We hereby confirm the inclusion of a PPC native version of P96 in OS 4.x.
The P96 team which consists of Alexander Kneer and Tobias Abt are very valuable members of the OS 4 development team, in fact so valuable that Hyperion already entered into an 8 page OEM license agreement with them on October 10, 2001 (!).
The agreement provides for:
- Permedia 2, Voodoo 3/4/5 and Matrox G450/G550 drivers;
- cooperation in good faith with other OS 4 developers to produce a PPC native version of P96;
- development of the OS 4 version to be kept in line with other versions for other licensees.
(Note that the Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon drivers are being developed by Chris Morris and Bill Toner respectively.)
It would be a welcomed change if anybody with doubts about the veracity of the announced feature-list of OS 4 would contact us rather than rely on untrustworthy individuals for information."

Emulator: WinUAE 0.8.21R1
As from now the Win32 Port of the Amiga Emulator 'UAE' won't be continued
by Brian King any more. Toni Wilen, who has worked on WinUAE for some time,
will be taking over.
Last night Toni Wilen released his first version, WinUAE 0.8.21R1.
The WinUAE homepage is available under http://www.winuae.net/
and it is hosted by back2roots.org.
Ralf Steines: "I think that Toni is full of energy and able to work very fast.
We're lucky that he takes over the work on Win32 Port. Something better
could not have happened (and I'm sure that also UAE will profit from this).
The new version is really excellent!
For the first time WinUAE supports CD32/CDTV emulation with matching,
extended kickstart ROMs, a scsi.device, streaming audio/video recording
and a lot more. I'm sure that there're also some bugs but fixing them
won't take long."

Test: Bridge adapter IDE for SCSI + 100 GB harddisc in Amiga
Author: Mirko Naumann
Only some time ago Amiga users complained that it's not worthwhile to install
modern E-IDE harddiscs in Amiga since the existing controllers are not able
to keep up with the capacity. Once I was of the same opinion and therefore
I installed expensive UW-SCSI and U160-SCSI harddiscs in both my Amigas.
Compared to my former IDE harddiscs this was clearly a step ahead but
unfortunately the capacity was really ridiculous considering how much I
had paid for discs.
Some time ago I read an article about IDE for SCSI bridge adapters and
I bought a couple of them instantly. It's the top model of 'ACARD Technology',
the AEC-7720UW (title link) which transforms UDMA 33/66/100 drives in
UW-SCSI models (40 MB/s). To make it worthwhile, I bought a 100 GB discdrive
for each of my Amigas from
Western Digital (Caviar WD1000BB).
The installation wasn't really difficult if you're good at English and if
you know a little about Jumper and IDs. As to the drives you have to be
careful not to overheat them. Therefore harddisc coolers are necessary
in any case.
When everything has been connected properly, you can use the harddiscs
for AmigaOS without any problems. They are recognised as if they were
UW discs. Since Westen Digital calculates 1 KB with 1000 instead of
1024 bytes, it's no surprise that only 93,1 GB are available. This is
to be expected. Formatted with PFS-3 V18.5, only 88,4 GB remain.
As to the speed: SysSpeed V2.6 calculated for CreateFile 25.93, WriteFile 32.74,
ReadFile 20.91 and RawRead 25.40 MB/s. Compared to my Quantum Atlas 10K and
Atlas V this is 2-3 times faster and the discs make hardly any noise.
Conclusion: I can recommend the adapter to anybody who wants capacity and
speed. And it's hardly possible to find a SCSI disc for a better price.
As to the price: The discs are available at 236,-EUR each, the adapters
for 92,- EUR and the disc cooler for 15,-EUR. That comes to 343,- EUR
for a 100 GB disc. In comparison: A 73,4 GB U160-SCSI disc costs 1089,- EUR
and isn't much faster.
Another tip: Don't take UDMA-133. Take UDMA-100. The adapter should be
available from any well-equipped Amiga dealer.
Have fun!

Hardware: Internal CD-rewriter + DVD-Rom drive PlexCombo 20/10/40/-12A

It is the first rewriter of the 10x RW generation which can be installed

The new drive describes CD-R with 20x zone CLV, CD-RWs with 10x CLV,
it reads CDs with up to 40x CAV and DVD with 12x (16.2 MB/s).
It has a data buffer of 2 MB and is based on BurnProof technology.

Hardware: CD-rewriter Plextor: 40x rewriter for the ATAPI interface
As already reported on
2 February 2002, Plextor is now offering a 40x rewriter for the
ATAPI interface (E-IDE). Here just a brief update by Mirko Naumann:
The PlexWriter 40/12/40A is now also available in Germany. The price of
the bulk version (drive, instruction book, PlexTools, E-IDE (ATAPI) cable
and audio cable) is around 215,-EUR while the retail version with additional
5 CD-R, 1CD-RW, the PC-Sofware Nero + InCD and a few installation screws costs
around 230,-EUR. According to US advertisements you can write a CD-R
in about 3 minutes. In any case this is probably the fastest and best
equipped CD rewriter on the market. Other companies have only stocked
32x and 36x rewriters. In addition, the PlexWriter can easily create
security copies (1:1) of copy-protected CDDAs such as BravoHits 34.

Functional AmigaOne was presented on alt.WOA
According to a brief message from alt.WOA which Don Cox has posted on
the AmigaOne mailing list (English original available via the title
link) a fully functional AmigaOne was presented at the fair.
"I've just returned from Alt WOA in Huddersfield.
It might interest you that Alan Redhouse received a fully functional
AmigaOne motherboard this morning, which he presented at the fair.
It seems that Escena had Linux run on this board (until OS4 is ready).
The motherboard seems to be working fine although Alan only managed to
get the booting process up-and-running up to the BIOS in the short
period of time that was available to him.
The specifications have really been improved compared to earlier versions.
The production of the motherboard begins in six weeks.
The announced (estimated) price was really reasonable. I think that Alan
will let you know the details very soon."
Further news from AmigaOne
Further statements of fair visitors include the following details:
(the statements have not been confirmed officially)
- Ethernet, Parallel, Seriell, USB and Sound all on-board
- Vier PCI-Slots
- AGP2, 133MHz RAM Interface
- The connection to A1200 is now on an optional PCI card
A beginners version of the motherboard, including CPU, will be available
for about £350 (circa 500 EUR). A G3/600 or a G3/750 will be used as a CPU
(the statements are contradictory).
A more expensive CPU version is also available. Prices haven't been
announced yet.

Magic Menu v2.34
Today has Magic Menu version 2.34 been released that now has among other things
direct Amithlon support. Enjoy it.
Magic Menu is a commodity that strongly enhances Intuition menus of the Amiga in
many ways. On the first start one surely recognises immediately the new modern
and three-dimensional look of the menus. But that isn't all. Furthermore offers
Magic Menu the possibility of so called pop-up menus i.e. menus that are
activated at any given point on the screen appear at just this point. In
addition offers Magic Menu a very comfortable menu control via keyboard if
needed.

Game: New MorphOS-Version of ScummVM 0.1.0
Rüdiger Hanke:
In the interpreter itself, not much has happened - 'cept first
support for some older games (including the 256 color (sic) Zak
McKracken). It's not even remotely enough, though, to even consider
playing through a few rooms.
But I have changed two issues about the MorphOS part:
- The "original" mouse pointer reappears when mouse is moved
outside the window, so you don't have to click blindly somewhere
to know where your mouse is ;-)
- Timing has been fixed a bit, so CPU load should decrease and the
mouse pointer movements will be less abrupt. It's not perfect,
but next version (see below) will have much improved timing handling.
These things have been taken from the new MorphOS driver and
not been extensively tested to work in the old one (although I don't
see a reason why they shouldn't), so I compiled it into the CVS snap. It's
difficult to put anything more into the old driver because the new
one is so much different.
Which leads me to a much nicer issue, that being the new MorphOS
driver which has been rewritten from the scratch (yet once more ;-))
and is now really really cute :-)) Also, it does contain music support
now (phew! that was quite some work ...). It'll need some horsepower,
though. Best get a G3 Pegasos to fully enjoy it ;-)

Amiga Inc.: New Executive Update from Bill McEwen
Bill McEwen just released a new Executive Update:
Bill McEwen - February 22, 2002
Greetings to the Global Amiga family,
Yes, I know that it has been more than a week, and yes the deal is still on, and yes we are moving very quickly as I will outline to you all below
I want to personally thank our friends and families for sticking with us and with our dreams as they are coming to reality.
As Amiga has matured over the last two years, and our plans only slightly changed I would like to say thank you to each and every one of you for your patience and excitement as we move forward.
In 1999 Amiga, Inc. decided to take a very different road than the ones previously charted for the community. It was met, by some, with disbelief, most with excitement as a path was being laid towards a future where digital content would be accessed by any digital device. Amiga selected an unknown partner in the Tao-Group of Reading England, and I can assure you that this was the best decision we have made.
Tao and Amiga have never been closer as a true partnership is in place. I want to thank Francis Charig my dear friend, and the rest of the Tao team as they been instrumental to the successes that will become public knowledge soon.
However with all of the great plans that were in place and the product development that had started there was still the issue of having funds necessary to make it all happen, and the addition of Frank Wilde as our Chairman has been amazing help, and I can say we are moving forward in ways that are going to bring Amiga to new levels, and I could not be more happy with the results that we are seeing.
Thank you to everyone of you who are keeping the faith and spreading the truth about Amiga.
I have several announcements that are happening here, and you need to know that we are definitely going to have more Amiga enabled products ship in 2002 than in any year previous.
- Our STB partner - Nokia, and their new Media Terminal. Yes, the same Nokia that you all know and love. Amiga will be pre-loaded on these products and we will begin shipping on them before summer this year. More information will be made available soon.
- I often get messages asking when we are going to let the rest of the world know what is happening. Well for all of you who have asked - Amiga will be at the Embedded Systems Show in San Francisco, CA, March 12 through the 15th. We will be in booth #1602, located in the South Hall of Moscone Center. We will be showing the new Amiga technology, and some exciting new features never before seen in any other product. We will also be making at least one announcement there at the show.
- We have two more new members added to the team and there are many more that will be announced soon. The first two are part of our sales team. Both are dynamic and excited to be part of the Amiga family. Liz Barnick and David Brott joined us in January, and are establishing themselves quickly with regards to new business, and great ideas. I have included information about them both in a separate document that is attached to this update.
- AmigaOS 4.0 is moving ahead very nicely and I could not be more pleased with Hyperion and their ability to get things done. We will all be very proud of their efforts, and I know that many of you will be rewarded with what they have already accomplished, and with the product that they are building.
I can assure you that your patience will be met with great rewards, and there are many others who are now learning what you have known. That Amiga has the most robust, talented, dedicated community of any computing platform today or in the future.
Thank you again for your continued prayers and support. You are about to be rewarded.
Amiga to Deploy AmigaDE on Nokia Infotainment Device for the Home
Liz Barnick Joins Amiga as Director, Business Development
David Brott Joins Amiga as Director, Business Development
With my best to everyone,

HighAnt Development at new URL
Marco Frischkorn of HighAnt Development:
Due to a move to an own webserver, the URL of HighAnt Development changes.
The new URL is: http://www.highantdev2.de.
Should you nevertheless use the old URL, you'll get an error message,
and when you access the main page you'll be redirected automatically to
the new domain.
These changes were necessary as I need scripts and programs in future
which my current web hosting service does not offer in a normal hosting
package.
The mirrors of Frogger and SoftCinema will probably move in the next days
as well. If and when this happens I have to decide with the webmaster.

5.000.000 website visitors :)
If we were paid an Euro for every person who visits our website, we would now
be incredibly rich :). Today more than 5,000,000 visitors have been
counted. The good thing is that the next full million will now be reached much
faster; we counted 4 million in October 2001 - only about 4 months ago.
This is just like making money - the first million is the hardest to get :).

... A historical moment ... (update)
This evening, on the 20. February, there is a moment for one minute which has been only one time, more than thousand years ago!!
Two minutes after 8 pm we will have the following date:
20:02 20.02.2002
This is a register with a perfect symmetry and is called "Palindrom".
This has been happened at
10:01 10.01.1001
more than thousand years ago. This will not happen any more because the maximal digital marking of a day is 23:59. On 30.03 3003 this will not be possible because we do not have 30 hours!
See you!
Peter Glauser
CEO / Manager
webware.ch GmbH
Addendum:
Lizard has pointed out in a commentar that there is another Palindrom on 21:12 21.12.2112 - but this will still last a while :)

AROS Update from 12.02.2002
Work on the Amiga Research Operating System is making progress. Details of
the most recent development can be found over at the AROS website
(title link). In summary, various bugs all over AROS have been dealt with,
a lot of changes to the underlying framework (the build process) were
introduced, the Palm flavor has been worked on and both minor and major
enhancements have been made (including the long awaited "pci.hidd", which
is meant to communicate with all sorts of hardware within the computer
thru higher level hardware interfaces, such as the brand new "nvidia.hidd"
- although still in a juvenile stage, the "Hardware Independant Device
Driver"-system is expected to grow in the future). (ps)

Amiga Future: New Q2 Screenshots
There are some new Screenshots of our Quake 2 port (which is in the final
stages of developement) available at the interactive section of Amiga
Future (see title link).
This time these screenshots are coming from the "engine modification"
Q2Max. With our port we are optionally adding support for Q2Max.
There will be two executables in our port, one for the "normal"
Quake 2, and one for Q2Max. Q2Max enhanced (among other things)
the particle effects of Quake 2 in a *major* way (the new effects
really remind a bit of Quake 3 IMHO!) There is no big speed loss.
Please note, that Q2Max has quite huge memory requirements - but well,
it is only optionally. You can as well run the "normal" Quake 2
executable. Both executables are included in the port and can be
installed parallely. Both Quake 2 and Q2Max can be played together
in Multiplayer without any problems. Steffen Haeuser.

After a lot of bug-reports about the new VirusZ III v0,96, the

VirusZ III v0,96 can not do the filecheck, the you must use
VirusZ III v0,94b until Georg Hoermann has made an new update
of VirusZ III. Here is what Georg wrote to me:
> -- email start --
I already received lots of those bug reports, and I have already
found the bug. Dirk increased the window size and didn't test it
on plain 640 pixel screens, so VZ 0.96 refuses to work on that
resolution. I didn't notice that because I use a 800x600
screen :-
The bugfix is on the way, but I maybe add some other features
to VZ first..

Story: Fighting Nintendo by means of a fly swat
In the middle of the 80s Nintendo had with NES a market share of
90% in the US and in Japan. In the above Telepolis article Konrad
Lischka describes Sega's idea to opt out of Nintendo and create
his own market. By means of Sega Console a new market for adults was established
since also older people without any PC experience could now find easy access
to video games.
When Sega's home console 'Master System' only gained a market share of
10% and the computer manufacturer NEC 1989 didn't have any success with
his home console 'TurboGrafx-16', Rosen said: "A Nintendo culture does
exists and to compete with it is extremely difficult.
The difference between the marketing concepts of both companies
becomes particularly apparent for the Mega Drive if we look at the
fighting game 'Mortal Kombat'.
The version of 'Mortal Kombat' which was released in 1993 for Sega's Mega Drive
did away with any moral considerations: The Sega version allows you to rip
off the enemies' heads and to rip out their hearts. The makers cheered:
"On average Genesis¹ has, compared to Nintendo, customers of a higher age
so that this will be the market with the highest growth for the second
half of the 90s", according to Electronic Arts Manager Bing Gordon in 1993.
The complete article is available via the title link.

Virus Help Denmark: WatchDog 2.7
On 16 February 2002 Zbigniew Trzcionkowski released version 2.7
of his memory surveillance tool 'WatchDog'. Compared to version 2.5
the following modifications have been made.
- added checking of some BCPL stuff (which is totally harmless since
os37+ anyways).
- CallGVptr - ROM check
- EndGVptr - ROM check
- GlobVecTable - checksumming, that should detect patches of any GV
based viri including imaginary ones like GlobVec144 ;)
Thanks to Thomas Richter and Holger Hippenstiel for information
about GV that helped me a lot...
- added new tooltype 'NoGlobVec' to skip tests described above - it is
already set in the icon as nobody beside me needs these checks!
- added notification of LIBS:xvs.library
- added some additional stuff to tc_launch/tc_switch checker
- changed timing routine
- ToolTypes: NoSwitch and NoLaunch are no longer debug only :P
- kicked bonus stuff due to lack of users' interest
The tool uses the xvs.library in order to check every three seconds
if there're any known viri in the memory. Further features have
been added which you can find in the documentation.
'Watchdog' runs from AmigaOS 2.04 and needs the xvs.library.

In September 2001 the games developer Ascaron from Gütersloh, Germany, was forced to file application for insolvency

I can't tell you much about it, because it's very far from being finished.
As you can imagine, being a clickBOOM game, it is going to be something
special. It will be available for Amiga/PC/Mac and possibly consoles.
Please don't ask for screenshots or more information -- as soon as I can
reveal more, I will. I promise! :)".

GFX-BASE: Relaunch
In recent times the GFX-BASE team has been working on a relaunch. With the new design completed now, better functionality will follow, e.g. a comment system allowing settings and graphical smileys.
Our vote ('Do you use a WB replacement or not?') also expiered. Learn about the interesting result from our vote section. But we also aim to suprise with more changes on occation of our (future) 1 year anniversary. Among other things a forum will be established, and a PuzzleBOBs test is to follow, soon.

Amiga Arena: ArtPRO 1.20b - Interview with Frank Pagels
Amiga Arena - Full Version ArtPRO 1.20b
In cooperation with Frank Pagels the Amiga Arena makes possible the
ArtPRO full version download.
About the image converter ArtPRO
ArtPRO supports a variety of file formats like
ILBM, GIF, TIFF, BMP, and PCX. It can even load more using datatypes.
ArtPRO also supports some raw formats like chunky.
Images can be saved as bitplane, chunky or truecolor, as binary or source.
ArtPRO's source generator is capable of creating copper lists and sprites.
The program offers very fast down calculation of images of very good quality, has a palette optimizer and real time colour bias also working with true colour pictures.
Development to be continued?
ArtPRO was written in 100% assembler. Who seriously would like to continue development might contact
Frank Pagels.
It really would be a pleasure if someone would do so.
Amiga Arena - Interview
The Amiga Arena talked to Frank Pagels, developer of "ArtPro", about development history and how this all begun. This
interview is available in German.

CD32-Emulator for Windows: Akiko v1.3 with extended ROM support
Akiko 1.3 was just released on the Airsoft Softwair homepage
(title link). This
new version features now support for the so called extended ROMs of
the CD32 and the CDTV. This means that Akiko is now able to show the
cool boot animations of both consoles as well as launch the funky
applications stored in those ROMs, for example the CD32 and CDTV's
audio CD player, CD32's NV RAM editor and language selector and the
CDTV preferences program.
Some screenshots of these ROM specific
features are available in the Akiko section
of the Airsoft Softwair
homepage. If you haven't got a ROM image but a CD32 or CDTV, you can
use the freshly released RipROM tool which is now also available.
RipROM saves the extended ROMs from the CD32 & CDTV to a file which
you can use with Akiko then. Additionally the emulation was improved
in Akiko 1.3. (ps)

GeoWorld®
|
GeoWorld®: DeveloperTool finished
The GeoWorld-DeveloperTool is finished and is available in a first public version 1.6 for download. With the GeoWorld DeveloperTool you are able to update and extend existing informations of countries, cities, and international organizations.
Because all text informations about countries, cities and organizations are saved with special index numbers as filename it was nearly impossible for the user (without knowledge of the program interna) to change/extend the informations by himself.
This tool makes it now possible to edit the files via mouseclick or keyboard.

DTP: PageStream Version 4.1.3
On monday 12 Feb the release of a new PageStream version was released.
I've just uploaded the second Amiga release, and the first platform release
for 4.1.3. Some minor 4.1 problems may crop up, but I expect this to be a
pretty solid release.
4.1.3 for the other 2 platforms will occur over the next few days, bringing
everyone up to speed.
Thanks for your support! Enjoy!

Thomas Frieden: More Infos about OS4
Thomas Frieden about the status of OS4:
The informations stated in an earlier update are still valid. No big breakthroughs in the last week (but none are planned, though ;) ).
The Exec Kernel is running in a Simulator (parallel to the normal system). In this time it is ported to the hardware platform.
The rest of the components is in different states of finishing. Some are finished but are waiting for the final converting onto the new kernel (this means just only a recompilation of it).
This is a hint for those who want to start with developing for OS4: Develop for 68k. The sources will be fixed with minor changes to OS4 (it means only one or two lines are added to the sourcecode). You can use the normal Exec API. We will release a beta version for developers that will document the new functions (about 20). It should be a change to PPC at least.
About the computers OS4 will be running on: OS4 needs the Amiga chipsets. Maybe we can change this until release, but that is improbable because some dependencies are placed where you never expect them (e.g. devices). Supported computers are all with Amiga chipsets like CyberstormPPC, AmigaOne, and (maybe) BlizzardPPC (I'm sorry but not all problems with the Blizzard are solved).
